please tell me when Willie Anderson was our best player

.

1988-89

Please tell me who you think was better?
It was NOT Alvin Robertson THAT year.

Vito Corleone

please tell me when Willie Anderson was our best player......Before David played his first game, Alvin Robertson was far and away our best player. Then, he was traded for Terry Cummings as David was about to start his career. Once David stepped on the floor, he was far and away our best player.

Willie was at best our 2nd or 3rd best player and even that is a stretch.....as I would put TC and Sean above him.

I know Bass made many questionable moves, with coaching hires, drafted players, and FA signings......but to be honest, we were a small market team with little to no financial wiggle room. IMO, drafting Hughes really set us back a few years (We could have had Dumars, who could have been paired with Robertson to make one awesome backcourt). It also did us no favors that Dawkins injured his hand and his career was basically over before it really started. I believe if Dawkins stays healthy, he would have been a better PG for us on and off the court than that scumbag who threw the no look pass to Elliott against Portland, and then later broke his hand at a night club......Oh, I know his name, but I refuse to say it cause I despise the scumbag so much.

I remember watching ESPN back in 1988, the year we went 21-61. Berman used a line I will never forget. He said, "You know the Spurs are having a off year when their best player is nicknamed "Brick" (for Frank Brickowski)."

I couldn't stop laughing.

Strong is 0-11 when the opponent scores first?Correct. Some other stats:

-third time this season Texas has been held scoreless at halftime. All games were on the road (ND, TCU and ISU).

-Texas has been outscored 112-10 in three road losses.

-Texas finished with 85 yards passing against ISU. Fourth game in a row where they have had less than 100 yards passing.

What about Mike Jinks.....former QB for Converse Judson in the late 80s, HC of Cibolo Steele, took them to two State Championship games, winning 1.....and now on the coaching staff at TT.

The quick sideline throws were horrible. And yep, Heard should have had 3 interceptions. It's harder to watch the receiving routes on TV so I don't doubt they were bad. I thought Norvell did a good job with using basic stuff against OU. I expected some confidence and more refinement. We went perfectly BACKWARDS. It's very disappointing.

it's tough to put a lot of it on Charlie since he was a bit hog tied by Patterson

I think he does need to revamp the the whole thing, starting with O and D coordinators. It's pretty obvious they suck.

Not only does Herman have U of H on the national scene in his first year (undefeated, will be ranked in the top 15 soon, after the last few years the school being a joke", he is keeping a lot of Houston's good players in Houston. Selling then on playing at a commuter school, in third ward, with a football program with a lack of overall success in the past. That program was in the Fucking dumps the last few years. Horn Frog 247 guy on Denzel

First, I'd be shocked if Denzel Okafor commits to TCU. Latest I've heard this morning is that he has all but told Texas he is going to be a Longhorn. Figured this was coming for several weeks and person I spoke with didn't know when he'd commit but unless something crazy happens, it won't be TCU.

Person I spoke with said Denzel understands what's going on at Texas and said it didn't matter if Strong was fired or not.

Not sure what led to the big change...if you would've asked in June where Denzel was headed I would've told you TCU 10/10 times. Even Texas people were hearing TCU.

I know TCU recruited him hard ($#@!bie was on it). They offered first too.

Maybe Denzel just wants a big school; he told me a few weeks ago that he feels he'd fit in better at a large public school instead of a private one.

Texas would be smart to give Fuente a call. Dude would kill it in the Big 12. But he's an Oklahoma guy so that will probably never happen.

This reminds me of the other UT's fall from grace. It wasn't just coaching, the administration was a complete disaster for 10+ years. Coaching alone can't account for this mess, it's the entire program from top to bottom.

Per HS:
With so many questions surrounding the program and coaching staff it’s really difficult to prognosticate realistically how the recruiting class will end up, but here’s a look at where things stand for the Texas targets.

Running Backs

Kyle Porter – Katy

Porter detests the recruiting process and doing interviews, but our sources tell us Texas is in very good shape for the talented Katy runner.

Devwah Whaley – Beaumont Central

Whaley has Texas behind a trio of SEC schools, and they are likely to stay that way unless they get involved for Davion Curtis who could help Texas reel the talented runner in.

Receivers

Lil’Jordan Humphrey – Southlake Carroll

The intriguing dragon athlete is probably a receiver at the next level, and from what we are hearing it will probably be in Austin. Humphrey is looking for a mix of academics and athletics with California being the only opponent.

Dee Anderson – DeSoto

Texas is trying and trying here but our sources tell us they are less optimistic on this by the day. Texas isn’t showing anything in the passing department, and Anderson is pretty locked in for LSU.

Devin Duvernay – Sachse

Dev Duv has all but eliminated Texas since they declined to recruit his twin brother Donovan. Texas won’t get an official, and this one is probably headed to Baylor.

Tight Ends

Zarrian Holcombe – Humble Summer Creek

Holcombe is back on the market and would make a great pairing with Texas commit Peyton Aucoin (http://www.hornsports.com/forums/topic/10942-burnt-ends-1122015/#), but Texas looks unlikely to pursue at this point.

Irvin Smith – New Orleans Brother Martin

Texas seems all in on the thought of Aucoin flipping his high school teammate. Smith is committed to A&M but we will see what happens after the two visit.

Jamal Pettigrew – New Orleans St. Augustine

Chalk this one up as a recruitment Texas can feel proud about, but unlikely to happen. Pettigrew has given the Longhorns a lot of chances and seems to genuinely like them, but it’s going to be very difficult to get a New Orleans kid away from an LSU commitment.

Offensive Linemen

Jean Delance – North Mesquite

Delance has a top 5, but the three standing out for him are Texas, Michigan, and Alabama. While Michigan is threatening, we hear Delance will stay close to home and his mother who really loves Charlie Strong.

Denzel Okafor – Lewisville

It’s been down to TCU and Texas for the longest time, but things are trending the way of the Longhorns. We expect Texas to land the athletic guard.

Kellen Diesch – Trophy Club Byron Nelson

Diesch is open again but don’t expect Texas to get a lot of consideration.

Patrick Hudson – Silsbee

While Hudson has always hinted the door is open, it’s getting tougher to think this one will go the way of the Longhorns.

Defensive Line

Jordan Elliott – Houston Westside

Elliott is hard to get a read on, but pretty much everyone we talk to thinks in the end Elliott is a Longhorn.

Keyshon Camp – Lakeland (FL) Lake Gibson

Camp is a newer offer, things could be looking up if Texas can in fact get him on campus.

Stephon Taylor – New Orleans McDonogh 35

A source this weekend told me he had a gut feeling this would be a surprise win for Texas.

Andrew Fitzgerald – Flower Mound Marcus

From what we hear, there is a strong Texas vibe coming from Fitzgerald. Don’t be surprised to see this one end soon.

Marcel Southall – Duncanville

Still a feeling Oklahoma leads in this one and Texas isn’t in the picture very much.

Brandon Bowen – Trophy Club Byron Nelson

Texas is pretty much out of it. Baylor leads from all indications.

Mike Williams – FW All Saints

It’s going to come down to whether or not he is accepted to Stanford. If not, Texas could be in the lead.

D’Andre Christmas-Giles – New Orleans St. Augustine

The Tennessee pledge is a soft commit, and the last indications we received were very positive for Texas.

Linebacker

Dontavious Jackson – Elsik

He will take his visits and consider everyone, but in the end I think he stays home and picks Texas.

David Reese – Farmington (MI)

Visitng Texas this week and is on definite commit watch.

Jeffrey McCulloch – Aldine Davis

For whatever reason, the Longhorns just keep slipping in this recruitment.

Shemar Smith – Miami (FL) Jackson

It will be interesting to see if Texas pushes for Smith late in the process.

Erick Fowler – Manor

Fowler is committed to LSU but he seems to be giving the Longhorns lots of chances to win his commitment. Getting him on campus will continue to be important.

Secondary

Deontay Anderson – Manvel

Sources still indicate Ole Miss leads, but Anderson will take a very late visit to Texas and they could close him then.

Brandon Jones – Nacogdoches

We spoke with someone that has ties to the Nacogdoches coaching staff who told us that Texas is in a lot better position than anyone knows. We’ve heard this for a long time, but can’t quite believe it. We will see if Jones takes his official to Texas.

Chris Brown – Elsik

Texas believes he can play corner or safety, and they should be able to close him and Jackson together.

Eric Cuffee – Waco

This one seems done as both sides seem to have backed off from each other.

“I’m just trying to get better every day,” Wallace said. “I’ve always been a tackle, so now that I’m playing that position, it just shows my versatility and that I’m not just a guard I’m an athlete.”

“I like Texas," Wallace said. “They’re one of my top three schools. I feel like I would fit into their system.”

Sure. Herman will do well at Houston and get a p5 job. He's just not going to do it at Texas, even if Strong is fired after next season. They're not going to hire a noob if Charlie doesn't work because they will have just made that mistake.

The Strong replacement has to be a home run hire. They will be swinging for the fence with many of the big boys. In this case I think Michigan is the pattern they want to follow. I think you will see some of the bigger names on that list and you will see a committee of BMD and important people joining in to make their pitch.

I doubt it will be a guy like Saban or Meyer, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some NFL guys on that list or a guy like David Shaw, or Jimbo Fischer. It really wouldn't surprise me if they went hard after Patterson.

This may be far fetched given his issues but I can't get over his on the field production and QB development. DT Mike Williams recently took a unofficial to Texas. It supposedly was pretty random because he just happened to be in Austin for a school function. The visit didn't seem to go that well partially because it was a little unexpected and partially because it seems like they don't have him as a top priority. He's made it clear that if he gets accepted into Stanford then that's where he's going.

— He didn't get to talk to the coaches much during his visit because they were in meetings.
— He did see Charlie Strong but added that the tour was extremely quick because of the aforementioned meetings.
— He is still strong with Stanford and isn't sure what UT can do to flip him.
— Overall, it didn't seem like he had a great time on his visit because he didn't get to spend much time with the staff.

I think the NCAA should have done more to change the rules for Men's basketball. You want increased offense.......

24 or 25 second shot clock
widen the paint to NBA width
NBA 3-pt. line.
no exception to 10 seconds to get past half court
limit amount and types of zone defenses

All of the above will force offenses to move at a faster pace, causing more shots per game, which in turn promotes more points per game.......IMO, with my rule changes, you go from games played from the 60s and below, to games played in the 80s, 90s, and even triple digits.

BTW, good scrimmage for Texas, but I would like to see a bit more team play and less one on one.....I do love the defensive intensity though. If Shaka can instill that Army Ants style of defense in the Horns, even when our offense is failing for stretches, we should be fine.

They've benefited from a move to the SEC mixed with Mack checking out mentally, which has led to where Texas is now. Rumlin's foundations are already cracking a bit there. Either Strong will get the ship righted or he will be fired...and you can bet that Texas won't make the same mistake twice. They will bring in an established coach who get the program back where it's supposed to be.

I only mentioned Texas because I am a Horns fan. Texas was never in the mix. I questioned why he chose A&M over the likes of Michigan and even Alabama......Both Michigan and Bama are upper echelon teams, while A&M is a SEC doormat.

BTW, the SEC is very overrated. I am not the only one who sees this. Many in the national media also know this fact. Basically, it is those who gave the SEC that huge TV deal that made the decision that the SEC was the best conference.....makes sense, as they want high ratings for their product, so they perpetuate the myth. They have a very weak non-conference schedule. They have a poor bowl game record as of late.

As much as I dislike the conference, the Big 10 is a pretty good conference right now. The Pac 16, isn't too shabby. The Big 12 has a few teams, but overall is it subpar. The ACC has a few teams as well, but the rest of the league is not that good.

Heard is making freshman mistakes........just stupid. He has become so predictable as well. We all know he isn't going to throw the ball. We need a QB coach who can coach these kids up....teach them how to throw short, intermediate, and deep passes. Teach them to read their progressions. Teach them to throw timing routes. HORNSDIGEST: The Longhorns have extended an offer to 2017 four-star offensive tackle Grayson Reed (http://www.scout.com/player/198403-grayson-reed), who is the cousin of former Longhorns defensive end Cedric Reed.

Reed also has offers from Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Boise State, Illinois, and North Texas.
This is what Reed had to tell HD's Jason Higdon on Oct. 25: “The recruiting process has been fun and exciting,” Grayson Reed said. “I worked hard in the offseason, and that hard work is starting to pay off! My family is very supportive in my recruiting process and very excited for me. They will play a big part of my decision on where I will commit later down the road.”
Reed is the sixth offensive lineman Texas has offered in 2017 along with Jack Anderson (http://www.scout.com/player/189206-jack-anderson) [Texas Tech commitment], Adrian Ealy (http://www.scout.com/player/191431-adrian-ealy), Walker Little (http://www.scout.com/player/193638-walker-little), Tyrese Robinson (http://www.scout.com/player/194781-tyrese-robinson) and Austin Deculus (http://www.scout.com/player/201424-austin-deculus).
The younger Reed is a big fan of Texas' head coach.
“I am a big fan of Charlie Strong.,” Reed said. “I like the fact that he's a competitor; I like his drive to be the best and to push his athletes to be the best! Most importantly he cares about his players as young men and teaches them to be leaders! I've been a Longhorn fan since I was a kid. I think the Longhorns are a competitive big time team that will also show up to compete!”

Update on OL Denzel Okafor of Lewisville (OrangeBloods):

"I'm ready to do it. I just want to buy some gear so everybody knows. I'm ready to do it," Okafor said of a possible commitment. "There's an alum from my school that works for Fox 4 news (DFW). We're trying to get it on TV if we can. If that doesn't work, I may just announce it on Twitter or something. But I want to do it this weekend, maybe even this week."

"I went there (Austin) with my dad. At first I got to meet the team, had a team dinner at the Omni hotel," Okafor said. "I talked to coach (Challie) Strong, coach (Jay) Norvell - most of the coaches really. They talked to me about what they planned to do at the game, what I could get out of going to UT, how they need me and stuff like that."

"Every time coach Strong talks, I just want to go to Texas right then and there. He's a great guy and I like what he's trying to do at Texas. I enjoyed the whole thing."

"He (Charles Omenihu) said it's a great environment and said it's a great place to be," Okafor said. "He said let's come to UT and get it going."

Update on 2017 OL Grayson Reed of Cypress Creek after receiving a UT offer (24/7):

“He (Coach Vaughn) told my coach they were going to offer me, so he told my coach to tell me that I was offered,” Reed explained. “I don’t know. They did it kind of weird. It’s never been done this way. When my coach told me that I was offered, then I contacted Coach Vaughn after that. I was pretty pumped, and he was, too.”

“It’s a big offer," Reed said. "My cousin (Cedric Reed) went there, and I’ve had some family go there. I’ve been there a lot because my cousin played there, so I’ve been a Texas fan a long time, and I like everything about it.”

“It’s a big deal," Reed said. "I’ve had a lot of Texas (fandom) around me. My uncles are big fans. (Cedric) went there. A current player right now, Desmond Jackson, I’m close with him, too. He comes to my house all of the time. I’ve worked out with Donald Hawkins a few times. We have the same trainer. I’ve been around Texas for a while and a lot.”

“I’ll still wait to commit," he said. "I’ll most likely commit going into my senior season.”
