If you seriously think Smart can beat out Kentucky and Kansas for five star players in his first cycle I have no idea what to tell you. Again, let him put a team on the floor. If the results are there, the recruits will come.

I don't want to hear anymore Avery comparisons either. He's Avery Fucking Johnson. He'll sell recruits on NBA recognition alone.

Stop it. Romar has been at Washington for 13 seasons and has made it to the tourney in almost half of those. Heron is a nice get for Auburn, but it's not like his offer list is full of world beaters. Kansas and UConn never offered. You're overreacting, per par.

Here are Friday's notes on Texas targets.

— Denham Springs (La.) defensive end Caleb Roddy will make an official visit to Texas after the season. Roddy is currently committed to LSU but was high on the Longhorns before his pledge.

— McDonogh 35 (La.) defensive tackle Stephon Taylor was expected to announce his top schools and set his official visits this week. Taylor, however, is still working on setting up trips and has postponed the release.

— I’ve been told that Texas will evaluate Blinn C.C. offensive lineman Abdul Beecham. The three-star guard out of Converse Judson holds a handful of offers. Texas stopped by Blinn C.C. during the bye week.

— Four-star La Grange [COLOR=#1B8EDE !important]athlete J.K. Dobbins will make an unofficial visit to SMU in a few weeks. Dobbins is a top priority for the Longhorns in the 2017 class.

— Three-star 2017 Houston Bellaire defensive end Alexander Duke made a verbal commitment to Houston last night. Duke camped with Texas and is on the Longhorns’ radar.

Higdon's chat

- DT Jordan Elliott will commit to Texas. FACT

- Texas will finish with a Top 10 recruiting class. FACT

- Relationships, playing time, and location all take precedence over pure W-L record in recruiting. As does ability to reach the NFL.

- If the entire staff were to be let go, recruiting would get very bad very quickly.

The single most important thing to accomplish right now is getting Shane as an EE in January. He is the best fit for Texas among any of the HS QB's I have watched.

- The next great safety for Texas is already on campus, Jordan Elliott. Texas needs to land another running mate to go with Elliott in the future and they will.

- On how Texas beat out TCU for Denzel Okafor:

Relationships took over and at the end of the day won out. Coaches did a great job with not only Okafor but his family. After NSD I can go into some more detail.

- Texas is puting the full-court press on Brandon Jones and Deontay Anderson right now. Chris Brown is also in the mix.

- Patrick Hudson's sister will not end up at Baylor.

- On recruiting package deals:

Every school recruiting Devin Duvernay knows going in if you want him you better offer and take his brother Donnovan.....So, if only Baylor or a few others were willing to go that direction then so be it. Each school has the option of going that package deal route. If you are willing to take a flier on a kid bc you think the other kid is a great player then that is on you and your coaching staff but it doesn't really bother me at all. At times it could be warranted but you better not make too many of those deals or you will get in trouble somewhere down the line. the different sport situation as this one is makes WAY more sense to me...Hey, if you can get your track coach to offer the kids sister to ensure you land the player and it doesn't cost the football program two ships whats wrong with that. that sounds like the best of both worlds to me

- Tope Imade is a road grader. You could see him enter thw two-deep at RG and push Vahe to center next season if Raulerson can't step up.

- DT Ed Oliver will sign with Houston regardless of whether or not Tom Herman stays at Houston. None of their recruits are potential targets for us.

- Texas has some good kids they are recruiting at safety in addition to the above-the-board names (Jones, Anderson, Brown).

Also, Davion Curtis could be a factor here as well. Some are indicating Curtis has an offer and will commit soon. According to some insiders, Curtis and Whaley want to play together. In my opinion, I think it's down to Georgia and Texas with Texas having an advantage of being close to home.

I don't think the staff ever saw him as a take. Some people love him and his ability, while other thinks he's not even a Power 5 type player. Apparently his motor is a big issue.

EJ Holland is confident that there is another commit coming soon and supposedly it is Davion Curtis. A lot of people have been wondering when Texas will offer but Horn sports has reported that an offer was extended to him last week. Curtis is absolutely in love with Texas and It's assumed that once Curtis is on board Devwah Whaley will soon follow. Whaley's top 3 schools are Texas, Georgia, and Arkansas. It's been reported that the only reason Goergia was considered was because Davion was committed. So now that Davion is Texas' to lose, its fully expected that the decision to come to Texas will be made easier for Whaley.

Posting this because it stood out to me.

This is from Nahlin at Inside Texas, who has been backing Strong all season and gets a ton of feedback from current players/recruits and their families.

"I just had an interesting phone call."

"Things are not good at Texas to put it mildly. The mutual parting is the best result for all parties, I'm sad to say."

"Texas firing Charlie isn't the only potential outcome. I think he wants out personally."

As best I can tell, the phone call was a parent saying Strong was disorganized. Im not sure what Nahlin was trying to say with that.

Charlie recruits off his ability to put guys in the NFL.

I'm content to sit back let the chips fall, If he stays, I'm hoping for the best, if he goes, good luck to him and I hope to hell this time we get it right.

I personally thought something big was up when he made that little slip of the tongue and said Miami instead of Notre Dame after the ISU game.

Guy has not even finished his 2nd season as football coach nor has even gotten his 2nd recruiting class and he cannot coach? This team is about as young as you can get in college football and it's teams best players are freshman and sophomores. Strong not going anywhere, nor should he since the foundation has been layed for this team..

Well maybe, and I'm sure this is how it operates in the real world, you change your fucking approach! You sure as fuck don't act like an emo pussy and go to Miami, not when you're making $5 million a year. I know this is all rumor and hearsay on Nahlin's part, but jesus titty fucking christ.

That's why these rumors are so weird cause Strong still pulled in a top 10 class with this approach and well probably end up with a top 15 class this season when its all said and done. That's with a losing record mind you at UT...:rolleyes

I don't know that he'll end up with a top 15 class, but I was never worried about recruiting in the first place. I've intimated as much. What I'm worried about is the perception that he has one foot out the fucking door, and how it's coming from someone is is/was firmly in his camp in Nahlin. It's weird.

Fred Akers was shut out in 1980 against #11 Baylor 16-0
Mack Brown was shut out in 2004 against #1 Oklahoma 12-0

Charlie Strong has been shut out twice in 2014 to #11 KSU 23-0, and against unranked ISU 24-0.

At the moment, there are 10 prospects in the 2016 Rivals150 headed to the Big 12. However, zero of those 10 prospects currently have five stars next to their name.

Usually, you can count on Kansas (https://kansas.rivals.com), Texas (https://texas.rivals.com) and Baylor (https://Baylor.rivals.com) to reel in top talent that can have those schools ranked among the top classes in the country every year. That's not the case so far this year. None of those schools even rank in the 35.

The quote from Feldman was -

Charlie Strong

“I keep hearing that too,” Feldman said of Strong having interest in Miami. “I’ve heard that from multiple sources now, one of them who is pretty close to Charlie Strong, saying he would have interest and that came a day before Charlie Strong got asked about it at Texas and he said “I have the best job in college football right now.” That may be true, he may have, as the Texas head coach — paid a lot of money, big resources… That doesn’t mean it’s the best job or the best situation for Charlie Strong and his family. Could UM pay as much as he’s making now? I think that’s a real stretch to think that… Can they pay him as much as he’s making or in the ballpark of it?

“The other question now I think that comes up is Charlie Strong may be 4-8 this year after a pretty bad season last year. Is Miami convinced he’s gonna be the guy?”

To say someone "would be interested" doesn't mean much without knowing the question preceding it.

This is actually really big news for Texas.

I said earlier this year that if Les is fired there is a really good chance that some of his assistants will be in play and Texas would be smart to take advantage of picking up guys like Rus Grimm, Ed Orgeron, Cory Raymond, and Frank Wilson.

Rus being the guy I really want.

Let also not forget that if Les is fired all his recruits will also be up for grabs and guys like Pettigrew, Fowler, Anderson, Monroe, and Thornton will be open to listening to Texas especially if we have some of their assistants.

I've just become a huge Ole Miss fan.

If Texas has zeroed in on a coach, and Charlie wants out, I could see a deal being reached where Miami takes over Strong's current contract and possibly adds a year. Instead of Charlie making 5 million per year, he makes about 3.8 million. Then he gets to leave and we get a guy that can handle the job.

The confusion is over the fact that the national media and Orangebloods, apparently, thought it was an impromptu press conference. All the other sites seemed aware that it was a normal media availability. John Bianco said Texas had been holding media availability on the pre-Thanksgiving bye week for 23 years. I don't know if that's true, but they did hold one last year. And the funny thing is the first question at that press conference was whether Strong was interested in the Florida job, and he gave nearly the exact same answer.

Personally, I think OB is all-in on getting Strong out and was stirring the pot by pretending the press conference was unexpected and thus that something is afoot -- exactly the response they've gotten.

T Floss,

Your opinion please (given you are in the loop on this stuff).

I mentioned I have a nephew at playing football Pitt in a previous post. He walked on a year ago (he red shirted in 2014). Now he is getting on the field playing special teams as a RS FR. Would it be a reasonable possibility that Pitt offers a scholly next spring if he is actually playing now or do the coaches hold off on that stuff until later on? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

It's interesting that my nephew made it on the field at Pitt before the much ballyhooed Jake Oliver at UT (both played at Dallas Jesuit), who looks like an afterthought with the new coaching staff......

Strong: [laughs] I have a great job here, Chip. And I say this, you know, we have a lot of work to get done here. I’m very pleased with just where we are right now, and I look at our record and know we could have been a lot better. And there’s still a lot of work to get done here.

Quotes from WR Davion Curtis of Temple after committing to Texas (24/7):

“I wanted to be a Longhorn for as far back as I can remember,” Curtis said. “I always dreamed of it when I played Pop Warner. My family loves Texas, so I loved Texas growing up. Making the commitment means so much to me and my family.”

“I got a chance to go in and talk to them, and they let me know that I had an offer,” Curtis said. “They told me that they want to use me a lot and that they loved my speed. I didn’t even know how to react. I was so happy. I wanted to cry.”

“I see a bright future ahead for Texas,” Curtis said. “I always wanted to be a part of the tradition at Texas. I could see myself fitting in, especially after what I saw against Kansas. I’m really excited.”

"I still need to develop a relationship with the staff and get to know them. But I like Coach Strong. He's very down to earth, and I related to him well on my visit. You could just feel his warmth. It kind of just gave me some reassurance."

"Coach Strong and Coach BJ said that they thing I will be a good fit. They want to use me a lot in their offense because they like that I bring a lot of speed. I think I can make an impact."

I'm really wondering if Higdon/Texas is putting this out to keep Buechele from wavering. Or maybe they want to let the next OC have input on who they target. That should be the first thing the OC wants to fix when he walks in the door.

ISU is stupid, don't they know they are ISU. They aren't in the city of Houston, if it were not for joining the Big 8 back about 100 years ago they would be an NAIA school.

Paul Rhodes is the best that school will ever get, oh I'm sure they can find someone who is better but the moment that coach proves he is better he is bolting for a real program. They need to know, their days of being in a major conference are numbered, as soon as the Big 12 folds, they are headed for fun with schools like Utah State and Idaho and Montana.

With Les half way out the Door... of course everyone is talking about who we have a chance to steal from LSU. Dee Anderson has expressed his loyalties to LSU and has said that he hasn't heard much from Texas. Claims he hasn't been paying Texas much attention and that Texas just isn't a good fit. Thornton is also one that Texas would love to have but he is originally from Louisiana and LSU is a hour from his hometown so for now he is solid. Eric Monroe will probably look around but supposedly his interest is in A&M if Les leaves, but if Eric jumps on A&M, that puts us in great position for Brandon Jones.

Les Miles is done. He is well on his way to Mack Browning/Phil Fulmering LSU, and our administration has decided not to allow him to finish the job. I expect it will be announced a day or two after the A&M game. The new hire and the timing of it will be crucial for our class. Gonna lose some recruits regardless of what happens, but don't see the class falling completely apart unless our AD fucks up the coaching search ie. still looking for a coach in January.

Highlights from Higdon's Chat

- Coaching change will definitely have a positive impact on recruiting, especially on the offensive side of the ball

- Sam Ehlinger is so far proving to be the top 2017 QB in the state.

- [On Zach Shackelford's slow 40 time of 5.7 s]

I am not worried about a 40 time for an OL..how many times are they in a foot race 40 yards?

- Moved on from the Devo situation. If he makes it in, great. If not, we'll recruit over him.

- Landing Pettigrew would help our chances with D'Andre Christmas-Giles immensely. Same story with Dontavious Jackson and Chris Brown.

- Feliepe Franks knows some of the Texas coaches, but he is a Florida Gators' lock.

- Still confident Whaley ends up at Texas when all is said and done.

- Whichever ILB(s) we land will see the field immediately in 2016, so Malik can move to OLB as soon as possible. Collin Johnson could also play early, plus a couple of O-linemen.

- Assuming they make their OVs here, Dontavious Jackson and Jeffrey McCulloch should be in on NSD.

- The last five I left off my mock class will make the difference between a "very good" and an "outstanding" class. Strong needs the latter.

- Jordan Elliott will still take his OV to Texas, even if/when he commits to Michigan. Staff remains in hot pursuit.

Already a good chance Erick Fowler ends up at Texas at the end of the day that was before the Les Miles firing talk so chance would go way up imo if Miles leaves...if that deal happens it would open up lots of things that could really shake things up...but they could also get a big time coach and secure everyone they currently have and then some

- Sterlin Gilbert will not be considered for the OC opening. Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green and Tulsa -- not saying he won't be great one day but not yet ready for Texas.

- There is a top recruit who is currently committed elsewhere but has told the Texas staff he is coming and is actively recruiting others.

Texas needs to grab some safety players no question....DB--Safety, OL, QB, RB TE WR DL all HUGE needs..they won't go perfect filling voids at every single position..the trick is filling as many voids as possible...Elliott could also be that guy imo no question

- Note: Higdon is absolutely refusing to talk about Sonny $#@!bie, which is weird considering he's freely talking about other OC candidates. Keeps changing the subject whenever his name is brought up.

- Our chances with DT Stephon Taylor have dwindled to very very slight... not even sure Texas can get him in for an OV at this point.

- We'll take only one of WR Stephen Sullivan and/or ATH Lil'Jordan Humphrey.

- Still think Kelvin Lucky will take an OV here. He doesn't have the same infatuation with Alabama other in-state kids have.

- Staff believes CB Obi Eboh is still solid.

- S Brandon Jones will visit Texas again. A&M is still the biggest threat.

- [On S Devin Studsill]
Been blowing up for a while really good player and we will see if he visits

Explain to me why Jimbo would make that move. I'm not saying LSU isn't an incredible job (it is) but so is Florida State and he has a much easier road to the playoff in the ACC. It's the definition of a lateral move.
