1. Shaka Smart (http://247sports.com/Coach/Shaka-Smart-2532) is named after Shaka Zulu, who brought together many South African chiefdoms during his reign in the early 1800s. Smart’s father, Winston, gave him the name. Smart told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that his name is the “best thing” his father ever did for him. Smart’s father left his family when he was 17.

Well, even the players seemed worried on Twitter so I don't blame anyone for thinking it was really bad.

I think it's laughable how you can go over to 247 and see all these people reading into Heard looking worse than Swoopes in practice and all upset thinking Swoopes is already the clear starter. Swoopes looking good against air in practice means nothing on gameday. The same as Heard not looking great against air in practice means nothing on gameday. There are and have been alot of very good players who dont practice well but play lights out on game day. Id much rather have the guy that "looks" worse in practice but brings it on gameday. Im not claiming that is Heard but for people to start giving up on a player based on 2nd and 3rd hand information on practice is mind blowing. We talkin about practice man...

CB Parrish Cobb of Waco La Vega discusses picking up a Texas offer (OrangeBloods):

"I went up there and I was talking to coach (Chris) Vaughn. Then we went in the D-coordinator's office and that's when they offered," Cobb said.

"That's a really big deal for me," Cobb said. "I've been wanting the UT offer for a pretty long time now."

"I like how they got all these new coaches. I have a bond with the coaches already because I went up there for camp," Cobb said. "I know the school really well. It's been my dream school growing up. I've visited the campus a lot, so that's a plus for UT."

"I'm just taking it all in, trying to see what all schools I can get. Then I'll be able to make my decision later on," Cobb said.

Shaka could do wonders for Taylor's draft status. If Barnes were there, then it may not make a difference if he goes now or later, but Shaka has a system he can thrive in. There is a possibility he could not get drafted if he declares now.

CB Eric Cuffee of Waco High talks about his latest visit to UT (24/7):

“It was a really great visit,” Cuffee said. “I had a good time meeting with the coaches again and talking to them about different things. Parrish (Cobb) wanted to go up since he didn’t come with me last time, and I was really happy he got the offer. Overall, it was just a great time.”

“My dad really enjoyed talking to Coach Strong,” Cuffee said. “He said that he really likes the way Coach Strong runs the program. I had a good time talking to coach Strong, too. My favorite part was when he introduced me and Parrish to Lou Holtz. It was great to meet a legend.”

“I really like Texas,” Cuffee said. “I have a great relationship with the coaching staff. I just like the program overall. I feel like Texas has me high on their board. Coach Strong said he really wants me there.”

A&M 24/7 interviews DE Justin Madubuike of McKinney North:

“I have my SAT coming up early next month,” Madubuike said. “My parents have just had me focusing on that. I’ve just kind of been staying away from everything else and just focusing on that."

“I’ve still been talking to college coaches but I’m just trying to sort of focus completely on the SAT. Everything else can all be a distraction.”

“University of Texas is recruiting really hard,” he said. “Notre Dame is hitting me up. OU, OSU and TCU – those schools are showing a lot of attention. I also talk to (Texas) A&M too.”

“We don’t have a schedule yet but my parents and I are going to visit a couple of schools,” he said.

“I’m hoping to commit at the end of this year. It will probably be around December or so. I want to take my visits and see all the places that I am really interested in.”

“Not really,” he said as to favorites. “I’m really trying to enjoy the process right now. I’ll start narrowing things down pretty soon after the SAT.”

“I’d say the Big 12 and SEC is probably my ballpark,” he said. “I don’t want to limit myself or anything but some of the other conferences, they are pretty far away."

“I want somewhere that has great community and a great campus. Obviously, having great coaches and a great football program is really important too.”

interesting to see A&M finally get on board with the Cibolo Steele pipeline. Texas and Tech have a heads up here with former Steele coach being at Tech and Austin up the road. I can tell you that the sophomore and junior classes at Steele are loaded and there are going to be several division I athletes coming out of here over the coming years.

Quick update on WR Tren'Davian Dickson of Navasota after visiting UT's practice (24/7):

“It was a good visit,” Dickson said. “I just checked out practice, and it was a good experience getting to see the way they do things. They were going up-tempo and running the spread. The spread is where I see myself fitting in the best.”

"I got to talk to Coach (Charlie) Strong, and he told me that he needed me there because they are lacking at wide receiver,” Dickson said. “Coach (Jay) Norvell talked to me about the receivers he’s developed and stuff like that."

“Overall, Texas is a nice school. It’s Texas, you know? There isn’t much I don’t know about them. They have the best history in the state.”

Update on QB Tristen Wallace of DeSoto (24/7). Ohio State is currently waiting on the first guy to commit between he and QB Jarrett Guarantano from New Jersey who just visited Columbus. Guarantano is supposed to decide next week between Ohio State, Tennessee and Rutgers:

“I just talked to coach Meyer about 30 minutes ago,” Wallace said late Tuesday night. “I called him. It went well. For the most part we just talked about the same stuff. We talked about my workouts at school, their spring ball, them getting ready for their spring game, that kind of stuff.”

“I’m not sure about (Guarantano),” Wallace said. “We didn’t really talk about that. As far as I know it is still whoever commits first. For the most part I think everything is the same.”

“Everything is the same,” Wallace said. “It’s still five schools – Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas, Ohio State and TCU. At this point I’m really not sure when I’ll decide. I’m not sure if it will be this month or not. It could by any time now. I’m just not sure right now.”

“I’m not sure if I’ll visit any of the schools again,” he said. “Right now nothing else is planned.”

“Coach Traylor said to give him a call, so I did, and he gave me an offer,” Aucoin said. “We talked a lot about how I could fit into the system. He said I can do what he needs his tight ends can do and that he likes my athleticism because I’m a basketball player, too."

“I feel like I could be a good fit there. I’m more of a blocker than a receiver. I have an 11-minute highlight and about 10 minutes of it is me blocking. But I can also catch the ball, too.”

“I’m pretty excited about the offer,” Aucoin said. “It’s one of the bigger schools that has offered me, so I’m really interested. I know they are back on the rise and have a great tradition.”

“Texas is an unbelievable program,” he said. “They average 90,000 fans a game and have phenomenal school tradition. Charlie Strong is a great coach, and I know he’s going to build it up to win national titles again. To have an opportunity to be a part of that is great. I can’t describe it. I’m jumping for joy.”

“With me being in Colorado, it’s not easy to just drive down there,” Stoll said. “But I talked with my parents, and we’re going to scrap things together and hopefully get down there in the next month.”

2017 DT Marvin Wilson of Bellaire Episcopal talks about his experience at UT last weekend (OrangeBloods):

"I went to position meetings first, then coach Bedford pulled me aside and offered," Wilson said. "Then I talked to coach Strong, and he said he wanted to me to know they offered."

"I came to watch practice, how they work out. The coaching staff, how intense practice is, that's what stood out," Wilson said. "It was mostly a scrimmage, they really got after it the day I went. I really like coach Brick Haley, on the sideline and in the position room. He's not always telling you the answers, he's making you think for yourself."

"They (the Longhorns) easily make it in the top five," Wilson said. "I'd probably say Florida State, UT, Texas A&M, USC and probably Michigan."

"Their coaching staff sets them apart. I got to talk to coach Strong. We didn't even talk about football once, not once the whole time," Wilson said. Some updates from Higdon:

- Reckons that QB Xavier Gaines previously felt good about us but has backed off recently, "for more than one reason which I am sure you can probably figure out."

- Still looking very good for OL Chris Owens.

- Had some conversations last night, Texas is landing the OL they want.

- Likes the way things are going with DT Kendell Jones. The other top-tier guy, DT Jordan Elliott is tougher to get a read on, but loves Strong & his coaching staff.

- Apparently S Eric Monroe may be cooling on Texas. Has to do with Texas recruiting a lot of others at his position, which doesn't make sense to Higdon since Monroe' offer was/is very much committable. Doesn't think Monroe will visit Austin this weekend, reckons he'll be at the LSU spring game instead.

- Texas needs to land Owens and OT Jean Delance. Another option, OT Kellen Diesch put out his top 5 and we're not in it. Delance on the other hand is still interested in Texas.

- There's a solid chance Greg Little visits Texas this weekend.

- Most likely to be our second QB is Tristen Wallace.

- We're the team to beat for ATH Christian Wallace.

"I like physical DBs. That's what they're all about," Okudah said. "I can see why they send a lot of DBs to the NFL. They have physical practices and their DBs are coming up big on game day."

"I want to take it slowly, let it play out," Okudah said. "I'll probably wait into my senior year (before deciding)."

Update on OL Chris Owens of Arlington Lamar after his visit to UT (24/7):

"We met with coach Strong and lot of the other staff, and we spent a lot of time talking to the academic advisors," Owens told Horns247 Sunday night. "I think everything went well. The academics is definitely trending upward."

"I don't want to make a decision too soon, because I know the coaches are coming to visit, and I want to have a chance to meet with everyone," Owens said. "I haven't really turned anything down yet."

"He (Strong) was always one of the coaches I liked," Owens said. "When I went up there, he was not only disciplined himself, but it's also rubbing off on the guys on his staff. It's not just something you see on TV. It's real."

"He's (Wickline) very straightforward," Owens said. "One of the first things he told me was that he wasn't really good at the whole recruiting thing, because he doesn't like to sugar-coat anything. That was something I liked. He basically told me that's how it was. He's different in his own way."
