Wilkerson of Scout said RB Kameron Martin tried to call him during the Gilbert press conference.
He wasn't able to answer the phone, but Martin claims "Texas coming hard."
Forget Martin. If the Horns take two RBs it should be Porter/Whaley or just one of the two. Besides, didn't Martin jump the gun and get a giant Baylor tattoo on his arm? He made his bed (or arm in this case) so he needs to sleep in it.
Also, I don't buy that Texas is coming "at him hard". I honestly think he is full of carp and this has Briles written all over it. Maybe trying to cause some doubt in Texas interest in Porter and Whaley during the dead period.

I tend to agree that this is simply an attention grab from Martin.
I have my doubts that UT is even recruiting him.

HORNSPORTS: After a wild and crazy coaching search that ended Friday night with the hiring of Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert and Matt Mattox, the Longhorns can push into the 2016 season with a focus on the new offense and incoming recruiting class. Lost in all of the insanity of the moment was an intriguing interview Will Baizer had with a trusted source inside the Tulsa football program.
On what staff he might take from Tulsa: "Nothing officially, but it wouldn't surprise me if he took (Tulsa offensive line coach) Matt Mattox with him because I know how close those guys are. They are kind of attached at the hip".
On Sterlin Gilbert as a recruiter: "When he got hired, they had 10 days to put together a recruiting class. He came in and basically threw his Bowling Green hat in the corner, put on a TU hat and hit the road." "We were all waiting for the season to wrap up this season to have a better idea of the type of impact he had with recruits. From everyone I talk to who knows him in Texas, I haven't heard one bad thing about the guy".
"He gets it, he's a young cat and he's not going to really sugarcoat anything. "Texas fans need to understand that while he may be the enemy, being able to carry around that Art Briles tag to the high school coaches is more important than anything."
On his influences: "It's not only Art, he's taken a lot from Dino Babers from his time at Bowling Green. People automatically want to throw Art in there as one of his true mentors, but Dino is up there nearly as high as Art."
On the offensive system: "The system is proven. This is such a unique opportunity because there's so much air raid influence that's been in the Big 12 conference anyway and now to have a true Art Briles protege go into another school is big".
"You take what Baylor has and simplify it a bit simply because of talent and it being year one and that's what Tulsa's offense was".
"It's a fairly basic offense, there's nothing in it X's and O's wise that will blow you away and you'll see that with Sterlin. They will tell you it has principles of the inverted veer in it which Art learned at Houston. That's the run emphasis and the run base off of it. People think it's up tempo so you throw it all the time, but it's a run based offense taken directly from the inverted veer".
"You have to have the right kind of players to make it work, and I think Texas does".
On Gilbert's career path: "I was surprised (Gilbert and Mattox) came to Tulsa, because I thought the next logical step from Bowling Green was going to a bigger program than Tulsa".
On Gilbert's role in offense: "His input was considered, but make no bones about it, it's Phil's offense. Matt was down on the field and Sterlin was upstairs. There's great rapport back and forth between them and the playcalling was mainly between Sterlin and Monty".
"Art called his plays at Baylor, and with this being Phillip's first opportunity he's going to run with it. He was almost in the exact same role Sterlin is in now. It's a carbon copy of what they do at Baylor, from the wide splits at receiver to reading the safety to determine if you're going to hand off or throw the 9 route".
On the Air Raid: "People need to realize the Air Raid has adapted. What Dana (Holgorsen) is doing now at West Virginia is not anything close to what Leach was doing at Texas Tech. Look at what Lincoln (Riley) is doing in Norman. He's taken Dana principles and what he learned on his own at ECU, and what you guys saw against Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl is not even the same type of Air Raid they ran in the second half of the season".
On Matt Mattox: "Matt is also a non-bullsh*tter. He's a big fundamentals guy and he's not going to fill you with a whole bunch of BS. He had his work cut out for him because of injuries, but he's not afraid to get in their face on the sideline".
Plenty of solid Gilbert/Mattox nuggets for Longhorn fans to be optimistic about....

When covering recruiting, you never want to break the news to a recruit that their coach is not going to be coaching at the college they committed to next year. Unfortunately we found ourself in that position on Saturday when we revealed to Arlington Bowie offensive lineman Tope Imade that Joe Wickline would not be returning. At first Imade seemed distraught over the news and said to us “Guess it’s time for me to get to know some new people.” He then asked why Wickline would be gone and we explained that Sterlin Gilbert would be bringing his own offensive line coach with him.
What happened next caught us by surprise. “They hired coach Mattox from Tulsa?”Imade asked. We told him yes and asked if he knew him. Imade immediately relaxed. “Of course. We have a great relationship. His mother in law is an English teacher at Bowie and she kept trying to get me to go to Tulsa,” Imade told us with a laugh. While coaching changes can often shake up commitments, it’s clear that Mattox should have no issues holding on to this one.
+++++
Texas had a nice group of recruits in town this past weekend on official visits. Commits Demarco Boyd, Shane Buechele, Collin Johnson, and Peyton Aucoin mixed with uncommitted prospects Irvin Smith (Texas A&M Commit), David Reese (recent Michigan decommit) and D’andre Christmas-Giles (decommitted from Tennessee following the visit). We’ll give you some quick hits from people we talked to this weekend.
Things were kind of crazy on Friday night when the recruits arrived, but the coaching staff who were on campus along with the student hosts kept them entertained. On Saturday everything was back to normal and the new coaching hires inspired some real enthusiasm.
We heard Shane Buechele is very excited about the prospect of learning and operating this new offense. Buechele is a very cerebral player with the ability to convey an intense focus when you talk to him, and I’ve heard Gilbert and him hit it off famously. I was told by a source close to his recruitment that while Shane has always been a very strong commitment, “He left Austin re-energized for Texas.”
Peyton Aucoin told us the visit went great and the new coaches were down to earth and relatable. Aucoin also said the football visitors only stayed for the first half of the basketball game so they missed the exciting finish at the Erwin Center on Saturday.
Irvin Smith is Aucoin’s teammate, and the Texas A&M commit had a great time on his trip to Texas from what we were told. Texas is getting closer and closer to flipping territory here and while it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened, they still need to push a bit harder. Aucoin told us he’s working hard to get Smith to flip.
D’andre Christmas-Giles has seen his stock explode recently. The big defensive tackle got a recent offer from LSU, and that combined with the great visit to Texas caused him to open his recruitment back up. Brick Haley has an opportunity to really earn some cred here down the stretch but it won’t be easy. I’m told DCG really values the in-state offer from LSU and he really likes TCU.
David Reese loved his official visit as well as his in home with Charlie Strong last week. The vibe on this one is all over the place but word is the former Michigan commit is choosing between Nebraska, Texas, and Florida. We’ve heard distance is a factor for his family so at this point I’m leaning towards Nebraska.
+++++
With the final stretch of recruiting underway we’d like to bring you our version of the Crystal ball feature for the rest of the season. Each week in this space we will do a short breakdown of the serious targets on the UT board and tell you how the recruitment is going complete with a prediction and level of confidence in that prediction on 5 point scale.
Devwah Whaley – We continue to hear positive things about the Beaumont Central running back in regards to his recruitment. We spoke to someone this weekend who indicated things are trending very well for the Longhorns.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 4.5
Kyle Porter – The Katy runner is not a fan of recruiting and would probably skip the whole process if he could. His team is headed for the state championship game this weekend so he hasn’t spent a lot of time thinking about it. He’s hard to read but he likes Texas a lot. One thing that’s unclear is how a commitment from Whaley could change the numbers Texas is willing to take.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 3
Lil’Jordan Humphrey – It will continue to be between Texas and Cal for this one. Humphrey loved his time on the west coast when he visited, and has a role in the “Bear Raid” offense. We just can’t see Humphrey leaving the state, and the new offensive direction could be the factor that ices it.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 3.5
Irvin Smith – The Texas A&M commit loved his visit to Austin this weekend but there is still a hill to climb. There are some serious problems behind the scenes at A&M right now and it is starting to alter recruiting (as you’ll see further down). Smith has other factors at play for him as well that could land him somewhere outside of Texas. For now we’ll pick him to hold firm for the Aggies, but this one is teetering on the edge of losing control.
Prediction: Texas A&M
Confidence level: 1
Jamal Pettigrew – The LSU commit flirted with Texas a lot this season, and I think he really loves Charlie Strong and what the Longhorns can offer. That said, outside of guys like Shiro Davis it’s very difficult to pull Louisiana kids away from LSU.
Prediction: LSU
Confidence level: 4.5
Jean Delance – Delance can be a wide eyed kid at times who is wowed on all of his visits (and he’s visiting some great programs so we don’t blame him). In the end we’ll stick with the home state and the mom.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 3.5
JP Urquidez – We're throwing him in here because new Texas OL coach Matt Mattox visited him last night. It’s too early to say what might happen if Texas were to get back in on this one seriously.
Prediction: Baylor
Confidence level: 2.5
Zach Shackleford – We’ve been waiting for indications that the Belton native is leaning towards Texas for weeks, but Kansas State is doing a good job here. The home allure may be too much in the end but that remains to be seen until they get him on campus for an official.
Prediction: Kansas State
Confidence level: 1
Patrick Hudson – He’s already been identified as a high priority for this type of offense and the Longhorns have been on him for a while. Matt Mattox might be able to close the deal here but our money is on Baylor.
Prediction: Baylor
Confidence level: 3.5
Jordan Elliott – Right now he’s committed to Michigan and he’s selling the narrative that it’s a hard commit. We will see, because his history suggests otherwise but this particular commitment is a little sturdier than the previous two. Get the big prospects in Houston and Elliott just might follow.
Prediction: Michigan
Confidence level: 3.5
Kelvin Lucky – The Alabama athlete has been very quiet since his initial offer from Texas happened. Alabama was involved but haven’t come through with an offer yet. If things hold we’d say Texas is sitting in the pole position.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 2.5
D’Andre Christmas-Giles – This is another guy that really blew up after Texas offered him and new film emerged. He really loved his visit to Texas this weekend and his de-commitment might show favorable signs there, but based on what we are hearing there are possibly 2 schools in front of the Longhorns.
Prediction: LSU
Confidence level: 4
Marcell Southall – This one has been trending a certain way for weeks now.
Prediction: Oklahoma
Confidence level: 5
Mike Williams – Once again, it will depend on whether Williams gets his acceptance to Stanford but if he doesn’t we believe the Longhorns will benefit.
Prediction: Stanford
Confidence level: 3
Dontavious Jackson – This feels like the lynch pin for things, but D-Jack is planning on taking this all the way to signing day. He has some out of state options he loves but we're still picking Texas here.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 2.5
Jeffrey McCulloch – The aforementioned issues at A&M have pushed the Shark back towards Texas, but A&M is still holding a slight edge. Like Jackson, he also has some out of state suitors (Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford) that he is high on. Until we hear more I’m leaning towards the home state.
Prediction: Texas A&M
Confidence level: 1
Erick Fowler – Where once we strongly considered him a candidate to flip, it seems like those chances are slipping away.
Prediction: LSU
Confidence level: 3
Deontay Anderson – After being one of the last holdouts on the Anderson to Texas train I’ve decided to get off at the next stop. Things could change on his official visit and the race is down to Texas and Ole Miss from what I hear.
Prediction: Ole Miss
Confidence level: 4
Brandon Jones – Here’s another instance where issues in the Aggie football program could cost them an elite player. Jeff Traylor is on the case and that is not to be laughed at. Traylor is chipping away at every opportunity along with Chris Vaughn. All season we’ve picked the Aggies, and still will but this one is turning.
Prediction: Texas A&M
Confidence level: 0.5
Eric Cuffee – We wrote him off when I was told he silently committed to A&M earlier in the fall. Recently he’s been coming around Austin more and making it known he’s still open.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 2
Chris Brown – The Elsik DB loves Texas, and if they get Dontavious Jackson he’s a shoe in. He might be even if they don’t get Jackson.
Prediction: Texas
Confidence level: 2.5

Here's a note from looch:
Kevin Murray was on campus today to talk with the A&M coaches, along with Kyler, regarding the QB's future within the offense, the direction of the Aggie offense and his football future. I haven't heard anything along the lines of a transfer and this may have been nothing more than a clear the air meeting during which the quarterback and his father wanted some answers moving forward but I'll stay on top of the story in case of any further developments.
10pm Update: Just to follow up, I have circled back with sources and still don't expect a Murray transfer. Plenty of concern as it pertains to Kyler's role moving forward, the direction of the offense, the OC situatio, etc? Of course. If anything changes, you'll hear it here first. I don't expect that to happen this evening so don't expect much in the way of breaking news

HORNSPORTS: I touched on some things in Burnt Ends about the troubles going down in College Station. Today's events are just confirming that it is toxic there. Today's been a little crazy for me because my wife had to have an emergency medical procedure done (she's doing well now) so I had a lot of time to sit in a waiting room and follow the dumpster fire surrounding the A&M program. I've known some of this for months, but since this isn't an Aggie site I haven't put a lot of it out there since I didn't see a need to. The events of the past 2 weeks are enough for me to paint a picture.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about I'll try to construct a timeline based on things known, things rumored by others, and what I've heard.
1) After the Aggies lost to Alabama and Kyler Murray reportedly cussed out Jake Spavital on the sideline, things started to get sideways. Allen was clearly hurt, and from the looks of things the Aggies kept running him out there. Why? I haven't the slightest idea. I think they wanted to not cause a QB controversy but they went about it in the worst way possible. Murray was benched when A&M played Ole Miss and JUCO transfer Jake Hubenak took the backup snaps in a game where Allen's injury was clearly causing him trouble. From what I was told back then this caused a huge rift in the locker room. The older players siding with Allen, while the freshmen sided with Murray
2) I spoke to someone about a month ago who told me the way Allen was treated with his injury was causing him to seriously consider transferring. There was a lot of talk that he didn't mesh that well with the team and saw himself as an outsider while Murray (the Texas high school legend) was more of a golden boy. It became clear at that time that something was going to give and one of these quarterbacks wouldn't be here following the end of the season.
3) Fast forward to last week. While the Longhorns were trying to wrap up an embarrassing coaching search, Kyle Allen decided to put in his transfer papers and let it be known he was gone. It wasn't surprising based on what I knew and it wasn't surprising to anyone watching the situation. I didn't think much of it but I kept hearing something wasn't right in college station. All of a sudden, recruits who I had penciled in to A&M started to back off and word behind the scenes was there was a near mutiny going on.
4) I spoke with some coaches this weekend who had players being recruited by A&M. I wasn't even on the subject but two separate coaches brought the troubles up to me and said that A&M players were actively telling recruits to look elsewhere. This is one of the worst signs you can see and if you remember the end of the Mack Brown era it was rampant here. While checking on recruits I was told on a number of them that things were trending away from A&M. I reflected that in my crystal ball part of Burnt Ends this week but still played it cautious because I believed in my mind that any coach could see what was happening and squash it. I assumed the problems would be ironed out and the long lasting relationships would prevail (and they still might).
5) Last night it was reported by 247 that Kyler Murray and his family were meeting with Sumlin to discuss his role in the offense. My antenna went up immediately but I just couldn't see any way a transfer was on the table. What did Murray want? He already had the starting job defaulted by Allen leaving and the show was about to be his for better or worse. There were rumors out that the Murray family demanded to know what the plan was for the next offensive coordinator and even wanted a say. I have no clue if those are true or not, but the way I saw it Sumlin was in a no win situation. He could give in to Murray and lose the respect of everyone, or tell his quarterback to stay in his lane and piss him off.
6) Today it was reported by TexAgs.com that Murray was seriously consider transferring and that some sources indicated the decision was made. Kyler Murray was not at bowl practice today and Kevin Sumlin downplayed it by saying he wasn't feeling well so he told him to skip practice. He also said he expects Kyler to start the bowl game. I'm not sure if the reports about Murray were premature or if Sumlin is doubling down on stupid. Right now neither scenario would surprise me. Pair that with the decommittment of Quartney Davis (Langham Creek WR) and the fact that Kevin Murray recently followed Texas, Oregon, TCU, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma on their twitter accounts and I'd say it's likely Murray is transferring. We also know that the Murray's were close to sending Kyler to Texas last year, but the Aggies won it in the end. Once again I find Sumlin in a no win situation. If Murray transfers they are left with only Jake Hubenak at QB, and if he doesn't you have a talented loose cannon at QB who could fold at the first sign of trouble next year. This player thought about torpedoing his recruiting class and is now thinking about torpedoing this program. Why would anyone have faith he's a good and loyal soldier for the rest of his career?
7) The Ags got a reprieve when GigEm 247 reported that 2017 5 star Tate Martell was looking into forgoing his senior season to graduate early and rescue them. I won't even tell you why it isn't a good idea to start a 5'10 170 lbs. 18 year old in the SEC West.
8) The most fascinating thing is that the Aggies so flush with 5 star talent at the QB position neglected to recruit a quarterback this year and now find themselves in a mad scramble to secure one. I've heard from a recruit that might be headed there, but this was before the other stuff blew up so who knows now. That recruit has some nice tools but isn't a sure thing. Mack Brown should call Kevin Sumlin up and tell him what happens when you neglect the QB position and skip a class in recruiting one to nail down a future commitment. It's also puzzling that the Ags believe every 5'10 QB will be Johnny Manziel but that's another story.
9) Sumlin's seat is red hot right now, but the problem is they owe him a lot of guaranteed money (20 million) plus the money they owe to several coordinators (Mark Snyder and John Chavis) and the money owed on their new stadium. That's a lot of dead money to pony up plus the new costs of bringing in a new coaching staff.
10) I didn't give my opinion on this last year when it was going down because I didn't want to bash a teenager, especially one who was potentially headed to Texas, but I never got a good feel from Kyler Murray in the times I talked to him. I don't think he's a bad kid but his arrogance was out there for everyone to see. Several other reporters have mentioned this to me in private so I know I wasn't the only one. Just like last year about this time, he holds the fate of A&M in his hands. Some will ask if Kyler will transfer to Texas and I don't believe it's a fit. Texas has guys coming in and Kyler would have to sit a year if he was even granted a release which is doubtful.
11) What does this mean for Texas? Potentially good things. There are several Aggie recruits and commits the Longhorns would love to have. While Texas isn't without their own problems surrounding stability, they have a chance to come out of the dead period swinging while a staggering Aggie program tries to regroup. Jeffrey McCulloch and Brandon Jones are two impact guys that A&M had slated to be in the class. I'll have to do some checking to see where they stand but things could get hairy for everyone involved. I'd also take runs at Justin Madibuike who could be the biggest coup of this entire deal because of his immense talent at a need position. Defensive ends Mark Jackson and Alton Robinson would definitely get a call from me along with DB's Charles Oliver and Travon Fuller. Tight End Irvin Smith is already on the fence and Texas is sitting in a good position there. It's also worth noting that Quartney Davis who decommitted today started following several Texas coaches on twitter. Texas has a chance once again to make some hay with several big time in-state recruits because of mistakes on Sumlin's end. They should absolutely swing for the fences because the window could close if the Aggies are able to right the ship. One thing's for sure, we are in for another wild finish.

Listen, Sumlin mismanaged the QB situation. Everyone saw it and everyone knows it. Saying that, he's dealing with two incredibly entitled kids in Allen and Murray. Neither of those guys makes or breaks this program. Sumlin has to change some of the things he does but he is still a good coach. Not saying it will definitely work out at A&M but he is a good coach. With the ever improving defense, he just has to make the right hire offensively and he could still do great things at A&M. He's still recruiting well (besides the last few days with all the bad press) and there will be other QBs lining up at the door to play QB at A&M. The timing of all this is what has really screwed everything up and caused the most damage. Sumlin expected all of this to go down after the bowl game.
As for Speedy, the guy has had problems using marijuana his whole college career. Him being suspended two games is no surprise. Not much you can do about that.
And to be clear, the Murray's are a straight-up headache. Sumlin should have just let Kyler go elsewhere in his recruitment. The real loss here is Kyle Allen and you guys better hope he doesn't end up at OU or something. If Murray wants to leave, shake his hand and be done with it. Incredibly tough family to please.

The perception of the program is shot to hell right now and well see if Sumlin can recover. He might not be able too. As far as from a pure football standpoint, losing Murray isn't detrimental. He showed very little and was always favoring baseball to begin with. Losing Allen was the big blow but well see if Sumlin can grab a QB this class (maybe flip Jalen Hurts) and what Hubenak shows in the bowl game. He played well in his limited time this year.
Best case scenario is this blows over, Hubenak plays well in the bowl game, Sumlin signs a nice QB recruit or two and makes a big splash O-Coordinator hire. I think if those things happen then it's not outrageous to think he can recover from this thing. Obviously not looking good at the moment though.

After Allen met with head coach Tom Herman and at least one other Cougars coach in Houston on Sunday, he came away impressed. Specifically, Herman’s offensive approach and the Coogs’ success landing a commitment from four-star Spring Westfield wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland impressed Allen.

— St. Augustine (La.)defensive tackle D’Andre Christmas-Giles plans to announce his decision on National Signing Day. Christmas-Giles made a visit to Texas this month, and the Longhorns are high on his list along with TCU and LSU.
— I exchanged messages with Brendan Ferns’ father. He said it’s getting late in the process, but that he and his son would be interested in Texas if they get in contact. But the Ferns family hasn’t heard from the staff in about a month. As mentioned yesterday, the four-star prospect could be an option at inside linebacker.
— Nacogdoches safety Brandon Jones will make an official visit to Arkansas next month, according to a report from Richard Davenport. Jones is set to see Texas on January 15 and Auburn on January 29.
— Beaumont Central running back Devwah Whaley will “likely” make an official visit to Miami next month. Remember, Whaley committed to new Miami coach Mark Richt when he was at Georgia. Whaley will also visit Texas next month.
— Four-star 2017 Wylie East running back Eno Benjamin named Iowa his early leader. Benjamin does not hold an offer from Texas, but he is a prospect the Longhorns are keeping tabs on. Benjamin visited Texas over the summer.

That was a long shot anyways. Texas really needs to land one of Giles or Taylor to at least make this a salvagable DT class. Getting both would be great, but I will settle for one. Shit, LSU can't take all the DTs can they? Surely Giles sees they have Alexander and Logan on board and are pursuing Blacklock.
Maybe Marcel S. Will join the the class and Mike Williams doesn't get accepted to Stanford. I would never root for something like that to happen to a kid, but I'm considering making an exception in Williams case.

FOOTBALL BRANIACS– Handsome Tanielu: Last week Texas offered JUCO DT, Handsome Tanielu (Snow College). After speaking to Tanielu it was clear that the Texas offer made him rethink his recruitment. The issue he is having is, as a January enrollee, he won’t be able to take an official visit to Texas before school begins at some of the other schools he is considering. Last we spoke with him, nothing had changed on that front but we will continue to check with him.
For those of you wondering why Tanielu was offered so late, simply put the staff didn’t not know about him until last week. In fact they offered him the morning his name came across their desk. Trying to be as objective as possible, given how urgent the need is at defensive tackle, this oversight probably falls on someone inside the recruiting department. You can call a number of JUCO coaches around the country and ask them who the best JUCO DT is and Tanielu’s name will be the first name out of their mouth.
Tanielu worked in Texas last summer and in talking to him it’s clear the interest is there. It’s hard to imagine that had the offer come a little sooner and he would’ve been able to take a visit to Austin that Texas wouldn’t be in the drivers seat for his commitment right now. – (Super K)
– Chris Daniels and Jordan ******: Related to the note above, I know some Texas faithful feel that the offer to 2016 DT and OU commit Chris Daniels came much too late as well. Daniels committed to Oklahoma last week. As we mentioned, Daniels family is originally from Arkansas and Charlie Strong knows them and even played with Daniels uncle. Daniels plans on visiting Texas in January.
Andrew and I chatted about why the offer came so late (according to Daniels’ father, Strong said they wanted to make sure he was academically eligible – though from everything I’ve heard Daniels has no academic issues – and wasn’t aware that Daniels was interested in Texas). Andrew mentioned a reason for the delay and I suspect it is the most likely…Texas coaches believed they would land Jordan ******. Having spoken to ****** myself on a number of occasions, I can tell you that up until recently he was indeed a huge Texas lean. His commitment to Michigan surprised many.
Last I spoke to ****** he was standing firm on his commitment to Michigan but if Texas picks up a few key committments and he makes it over to Austin for another trip in January, then things could change. – (Super K & Andrew)
– Under Armour All-America Game: If you follow Texas recruiting, I highly suggest you watch the Under Armour All-America Game on January 2nd. There will be multiple top Texas targets in the game, also a few of those targets will be making their commitments during the game. These recruits will be playing in the game:
S Brandon Jones
OT Patrick Hudson
S Deontay Anderson
RB Devwah Whaley
LB Jeffery McCulloch
OT Jean Delance
CB Eric Cuffee
LB Dontavious Jackson
Those are some players Texas fans are dying to get in the 2016 class. They may add a few of them that day. As most know OT Jean Delance will be committing during the game, as he named a Top 3 of Texas, Michigan, and LSU yesterday. RB Devwah Whaley will be making his final decision during the game as well. Whaley’s orginal plan was to commit at the game, instead he committed to Georgia on Thanksgiving only to decommit a few weeks later after now Miami HC Mark Richt was fired. Whaley’s top schools right now seem to be Texas and Arkansas and my source close to Whaley’s recruitment remains confident that Whaley will end up at Texas. CB Eric Cuffee is another recruit who could possibly commit during the game. He told me recently he’s a “maybe” on if he will commit during the game. He said if he doesn’t commit on January 2nd he will likely hold off until NSD. If he commits at the UA Game, I like Texas’ chances as he’s coming off his Texas official visit that really blew he and his mother away. The last recruit that possibly commit during the game is LB Jeffery McCulloch. I expect McCulloch to push his decision back so he can take some more visits, but this seems like a Texas-Notre Dame battle.
This could be shaping up to be an absolute HUGE day for Texas and their 2016 class. So as I said before, I’d tune in. – (Andrew)

Update on DE Mark Jackson of Cibolo Steele (24/7):
“Honestly, I didn’t commit (to A&M) because of any quarterbacks – so it didn’t really affect me too much,” Jackson said. “People made it seem like the end all be all – like ‘aw, it’s time to drop everything and jump ship,’ but I didn’t really feel that way about A&M.”
“I met him (Coach Bedford) my freshman year so our connection is pretty close,” Jackson said. “We’ve just talked about how I would fit into the scheme, how it [Texas] would fit me as a student with their excellent business school, and how I’d be playing the FOX position in his defense.”
“I just don’t know if it’s (Texas) the fit for me,” Jackson said, emphasizing his last two words. “You always get those feelings when you walk on to a campus – when you get into that environment that fits you. I didn’t have such a great fuzzy feeling when I stepped on campus."
“I’ll be taking my official though – on the 15th [of January], I believe. So I’ll try it out one more time, and we’ll see what happens after that.”

SCOUT: If Texas president Greg Fenves and athletic director Mike Perrin want to finish the rescue mission that started with them on a private jet to Tulsa to hire a new offensive coordinator and O-line coach, they better now be ready to go get Charlie Strong's right-hand man - Clint Hurtt.
I reported on Tuesday that Alabama’s Nick Saban would have an interest in hiring Charlie Strong’s defensive right-hand man – Clint Hurtt (currently the Chicago Bears’ outside linebackers coach) - if Bama DL coach Bo Davis goes to South Carolina to join the staff of Will Muschamp.
So if Texas president Greg Fenves and AD Mike Perrin want to complete the rescue mission that started with them flying to Tulsa to close the deal with new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert and OL coach Matt Mattox, they better now be ready to go hire the man who can help turn around Texas' leaky defense - and recruit like crazy - Clint Hurtt.
Texas doesn’t need any more faulty communication about the hiring of an assistant coach seen as a solution to solving the problems on one side of the ball. The embarrassment the last time - with Fenves and Perrin on a plane as an official visit weekend was kicking off - never needs to be repeated.
Fenves and Perrin simply need to get with Strong right now, so that when the Chicago Bears’ season ends on Jan. 3 against the Detroit Lions, all the details of Hurtt’s hiring are already complete.
That is if they are still all about supporting Strong.
As one big-money donor who has been highly critical of Strong told me when asked if he’d try to make things difficult to hire Hurtt:
“I say if we’re going to support Strong, let’s support him all the way and hire whoever he wants. As far as I know, Hurtt has paid for the NCAA sanctions against him. And there was no problem with him at Louisville.
“Hell, if he’ll help improve that defense, go hire him right now!”
There is no doubt Charlie Strong wants Hurtt on his staff in 2016 as a defensive assistant – probably as co-DC. Don't know if it would be as DE coach with Brick Haley as DT coach or what?
But according to the sources I talked to at Louisville, if Texas fans want to see the defensive numbers improve dramatically in Austin, Hurtt is the guy.
The people I talked to at Louisville said Hurtt was Strong’s “staff cop.” Basically, whenever there was drama on the staff – on the offensive side or defensive side - Hurtt stamped it out.
“I think Texas fans know Vance Bedford can get charged emotionally about something. There were times when Hurtt would just say, ‘Who the f*ck cares about that? We just need to coach the damn defense to get off the field.’ Hurtt doesn’t do drama, and that’s Charlie’s guy.”
Former Longhorns and current Chicago Bears' OLB Sam Acho and DT Lamarr Houston are on the record saying they have loved playing for Hurtt in Chicago.
Here’s Hurtt talking about Houston and some of the other Bears he’s coaching as assistant DL coach/outside linebackers coach under John Fox:
http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/videos/Hurtt-on-OLB-group/e5408eab-82c4-45b2-9c22-32cf0e141704
I hear Hurtt is willing to leave the NFL (and his progress toward the NFL pension) if Texas is ready to see him come to Austin and help turn around the Longhorns’ defense.
Texas officials objected to Strong bringing Hurtt with him to Austin from Louisville in January 2014, because Hurtt was still under a two-year, show-cause penalty (related to NCAA sanctions against Hurtt while at the University of Miami during the Nevin Shapiro scandal).
Hurtt was the recruiting coordinator and DL coach at Miami from 2006 (under Larry Coker) to 2009 (under Randy Shannon). From a timeline standpoint, Shapiro, in prison for defrauding investors of more than $900 million in Ponzi scheme, by his own admission, was already entrenched as an out-of-control booster at Miami starting in 2002.
Hurtt was with Strong at Louisville from 2010-13 without incident. Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich stood by Hurtt when Hurtt was sanctioned with the show-cause penalty.
But that two-year, show-cause ended in mid-October, and the Chicago Bears’ season is over on Jan. 3.
In addition to being a no-nonsense, hard-nosed defensive football coach, Hurtt is widely considered one of the best recruiters in college football.
At Louisville, Hurtt helped recruit QB Teddy Bridgewater, an NFL first-round draft pick, and S Gerod Holliman, who had 14 INTs in 2014 and won the Thorpe Award.
This is how much Strong thinks of Hurtt: Strong ended up turning down Tennessee (after initially accepting the job), because Tennessee wouldn’t allow Strong to bring Hurtt with him. The job ended up going to Butch Jones.
Again, if Greg Fenves and Mike Perrin want to finish the rescue mission that started with them going to Tulsa to get the assistant coaches now charged with helping to save the offense, they’d better be ready now to go hire the coach who will be charged with saving the defense.
Or everyone at Texas could end up with the possibility of watching Hurtt coach at some place like Alabama.

Clint is a BEAST, both on the field and recruiting. He needs to have a contract in front of him on January 4th.

They'd really have to fuck this up for Hurtt not to join Strong at Texas. Get it done.

Maybe Hurtt can recruit some DTs. Bigger need if Ridgeway signs his papers today.

Don't be surprised in Elliott is back in the fold once Clint gets a go at him. Also look for him to have an impact on the rest of the Houston crew.

Silver lining, at least it won't be Kyle Allen who is probably the better of the two. Still sucks though, should've gone to Oregon damn it!

He's proven himself to be a headache Texas doesn't need...and he won't play next year anyway. I'd be more worried about on their baseball team.

He's right too. Texas has talent coming in at the QB position. The last thing they need during this transition is a distraction from a diva QB whose parents are a pain in the ass.

Wait, who is running their offense?
Phillip Montgomery is their head coach and I'm sure he will take care of play calling duties since they have not filled the OC position after Sterlin Gilbert came to Texas. Some Texas fans were looking back at earlier Tulsa games to check the type of offense UT is hoping to implement. Although Gilbert and Mattox are no longer at Tulsa I'm sure many of us would still like to watch some of the players they helped develop this past year. I doubt much of their offense changes with Gilbert gone being that both he and Montgomery come from the Briles systems. I know they have a WR who could end up with the most recieving yardage in all college ball with nearly 1500 yards. I'd likely key in on him the QB Dane Evans and the O-Line to see exactly what Gilbert and Mattox have been up to this past season.

A rumor was posted on 24/7 that he's signed with an agent.
Scout followed up by saying he's "leaning heavily" towards leaving and they expect him to enter the draft.

Trying to find the silver lining.
How can this help recruiting? LBs and switch to 3-4? DL come in and start as a freshman?
Also, really thought that we were not getting a player drafted again this year. Would've looked REALLY bad for the program. At least we'll get one.
