That's a stunner.
Ruffin is an alum of that school. He's installed a very respectable defense that had a solid year.
You lose a guy like Lincoln Riley, you have to cut the HC some slack to find another one like him. Last year during their 8-5 season, they were #6 in total offense. This year without Riley, they are #50 sitting at 5-7 with tough losses to Florida, BYU and Navy.
And you're East Carolina. Who are you going to get now? Bad bad move on their part, imo.
No, there's no room for him at Tech. Gibbs is set. They love him, I love him.
And Ruffin was a Leach guy, not really a Tech guy. Maybe he ends up at Wazzu.
Very very unfortunate, stupid firing, imo.

Scout and 24/7 reporting that Strong is looking to hire Clint Hurtt to replace Brick Haley on the defensive line.
Hurtt coached under Strong at Louisville after receiving a show-cause penalty for recruiting violations at Miami.
He has been cleared by the NCAA, but UT officials would have to decide if this is a risk they're willing to take.

Texas football is better at the HS level.
Great track teams however. No school compares to TCU when it comes to sub 10.00 sprinters and no school compares to Baylor in the 400m. A ya all know Carl Lewis went to Houston.
Histories first sub10.00 was Texas Southern's Jimmy Hines.

Halftime present Coaching moments:
Baylor: Basically playing sandlot football with a 4th or 5th string QB. Can they actually get some sort of quickly contrived game plan against a shallow UT defensive team? Will they figure they can pound us to death with some running or just try to play pitch and catch pickup game.
Texas: Can we take advantage of a flag football offense. Can we actually move the ball on our own without help. This is our last game of the season and we are still unable to execute the quick pass to a wideout.
1. Snaps have been decent
2. Swoopes is catching the snap
3. The throws are inconsistent
4. The wideout blocking horrid.
5. The positioning between the wideouts to make a block and catch on the move abysmal.
6. Catching the ball inconsistent.
7. Making the correct move after catching the ball mostly unknown because we can't even get through 3-6
This is the LAST GAME of the year and we still can't accomplish a HS play.
Charlie, you are up again. Can you take advantage? Will we just hold on to win? Or, the not entirely unthinkable...
This second half should be very interesting from a coaching standpoint. Recruits of both team take note.

I have traveled a whole lot overseas as well. I have been to Utah. I was not at a resort or college campus though. Practically all the Mormon women I have seen are super pasty and if dressed properly might be mistaken for Quakers.
But I am far from an expert on Utah or the women that exist between the borders. I do want to ski at Park City this winter, is there better place? I need big wide slopes for my wife.

However, I will say Heard has a ton of bad habits possibly due to extreme pressure that might be fixed. Swoopes... Can't see it. Keep him for running situations.

I know someone that is being recruited by BYU, that is what I know.

Boykin was horrible in 2013. The Horns beat TCU in Fort Worth that year and their QB was Paschael (something like that). Boykin played WR against UT. Cumble was hired for the next season (2014) and Boykin was the QB that year and they beat Texas 48-10. Cumbie was co-responsible for the Boykin turn around. Not saying that will happen to Heard, but I do think Heard may be slightly ahead of Boykin during his sophomore year. As a sophomore, Boykin couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Exactly... You can't expect the exact same turn around, but Cumbie did a great job with Boykin and you would expect a significant improvement. Also, I think Kai may push for some playing time next year.

Ok, Boykin was the QB that year. His point was what was Boykin like before Cumble? Cumble turned around a player that was a running QB into a complete QB in 2014. How is that any different than Heard this year? You don't think he can do the same thing with Heard? I'm not trying to start an internet arguement, Im just curious why you think Heard, who has the same tendencies as Boykin did, can't be taught the same things by a guy who did it with Boykin?

Not the rocket arm.
Not the same speed. But I bet it's pretty close.
believe me I'm hoping because I don't see it with Swoopes.
It's our only hope for a good season unless we get a really talented freshman.
We are in a much worse state than TCU imo.
TCU had/has a great coach running the show.
I can hope Strong can become one.
I really think Heard lost a ton of confidence. He would roll right, go backwards, and run out of bounds or throw a very weak pass off balance pass. He would never step up or set up to throw. Now he was under extreme duress, but it was disappointing to see him regress. He was so predictable and ineffective by the end of the season.

Wow...that is awesome. I think this kid is one of the toughest football players. If that's true, Texas needs to jump at this quickly. Most kids are wanting to be courted. Not very often you get a high quality player reaching out to coaches. Take the gift and go from there.t

Game planned is better. And actually what I stated in said thread.
Yep he can run if he gets the corner. He is very athletically talented, QB is a totally different position.
There are tons of talented kids that can't play QB. The Cal coach said he was faster than anyone on their D.
Like I stated earlier, I hope it was being under pressure and loss of confidence.
Hell yes coaching has something to do with it, how much is the question. It's pretty clear they tried very hard to keep things simple in the OU game and it worked. Then the simplicity was not enough.

Charlie Strong met with offensive coordinator candidate Sonny Cumbie Sunday evening in Fort Worth, a source close to the situation told HD Sunday night.Strong is expected to interview a second candidate - Tulsa co-OC Sterlin Gilbert, the source said. The source said Strong took Texas run-game coordinator Jeff Traylor with him to Fort Worth Sunday night for the interview with Cumbie. Strong and Traylor were in Fort Worth for roughly five hours before returning to Austin around 11 pm CT Sunday night.Texas has given Strong the green light to offer Cumbie a multi-year, guaranteed deal paying him $1 million annually. If Cumbie becomes the new OC at Texas, he might also be allowed to select a coach or two to join him on the offensive staff, a source said.Strong contacted Gary Patterson to notify the TCU coach of his desire to interview Cumbie, who has more than a $250,000 buyout, said another source close to the situation.Cumbie's play-calling experience is limited. He called plays for Texas Tech in a come-from-behind, 34-31 victory over Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2012, when Chris Thomsen served as interim coach following Tommy Tuberville's departure to Cincinnati.Thomsen, now the assistant head coach/offensive line coach at Arizona State, could be a candidate to join Cumbie if he were to come to Texas, two sources told HD.The interest Strong has in Cumbie is three-fold:1) He's well-versed in a passing game with roots in the Air Raid as a complement to run-game coordinator Jeff Traylor's power spread concepts. Those two have a good comfort level and respect for each other from Cumbie recruiting Gilmer, I'm told from a source close to Cumbie.2) Cumbie has proven to be an excellent QB coach with his development of TCU's Trevone Boykin.3) Cumbie is one of the best recruiters of QBs (especially Texas QBs - with Brennen Wooten currently committed to TCU for 2016 and 5-star Shawn Robinson for 2017), and everyone knows the lifeblood of Texas' program has been Texas QBs.As I've reported, Cumbie could become a target of Bob Stoops at Oklahoma if OU offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley were to get a head-coaching job (East Carolina, where Riley was OC for five years, might have interest), and Cumbie could become a target of A&M's Kevin Sumlin, who appears to be ready to pull the plug on OC Jake Spavital. If TCU offensive play caller Doug Meacham, who was a finalist for the North Texas job, were to get a head-coaching gig, of course, Patterson would seek to make Cumbie his play-caller.If all the schools had vacancies at OC, I'm told Cumbie's priority list right now would probably be:1) TCU - He's put in two years to help build it and has QBs on the way with Kenny Hill coming out of a redshirt.2) OU - Baker Mayfield returns, and if OU has another season like 2015 in 2016, Cumbie's the hot head coach candidate.3) Texas - Being the offensive play caller with a lot of young talent - and turning things around - would be enormous. The downside of things not turning around is significant.4) A&M - See No. 3 I'm also told money and a guaranteed contract for so many years won't be the top priority in Cumbie's decision. One source close to the Texas program said Strong plans to talk to two offensive coordinator candidates - with the other expected to be Tulsa's co-OC Sterlin Gilbert.Gilbert, who has extensive ties to Texas, ran the offense for Tulsa coach (and former Baylor OC) Philip Montgomery this season, helping the Golden Hurricane average 35.9 ppg in a 7-5 season as junior QB Dane Evans completed 63 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,958 yards with 22 TDs and 8 INTs.In 2014, Gilbert was co-OC/QB coach for Bowling Green's Dino Babers, averaging 30.0 ppg and 433 yards per game (173 ypg rushing/260 ypg passing) in an 8-6 season. Babers called the plays.Gilbert gained the reputation as a rising star offensive coordinator while OC/QB coach under Babers at Eastern Illinois in 2012 and 2013, helping to develop QB Jimmy Garappolo into an NFL draft pick.In 2013, Gilbert's second year at EIU, the offense led FCS in yards (589.5 - 372.4 passing/217.1 rushing) and points per game (48.2) while earning honors as FCS coordinator of the year.Garappolo won the 2013 Walter Payton Award (FCS' version of the Heisman Trophy) after passing for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns. In two seasons under Gilbert, Garappolo threw for 8,873 yards and 84 TDs.Gilbert was an all-state high school QB from San Angelo who went on to all-conference honors at Division II Angelo State. He started his coaching career as an assistant at Temple, Abilene Cooper and Springtown before getting a head-coaching gig at San Angelo Lake View, where he was named West Texas High School coach of the year in 2008.Gilbert was hired by Art Briles as a graduate assistant coach at Houston in 2005 and was recommended to Dino Babers at EIU by Briles after Babers worked as Baylor's WR coach from 2008-11.Another candidate, of course, would be Traylor, Texas' TE coach/run game coordinator and former Gilmer HS coaching legend.Traylor's power spread offenses at Gilmer mixed the concepts of Chad Morris and Gus Malzahn and scored points like crazy during his decorated HS coaching career, which included 3 state titles (59.2 ppg during Gilmer's 16-0 4A state title run in 2014).

Update on commits still in playoffs:
Class of 2016
— Wide receiver, Reggie Hemphill-Mapps (http://247sports.com/Player/Reggie-Hemphill-Mapps-23451): For the third-consecutive year, Manvel (11-3) witnessed its season come to an end with a fourth-round, Region III Final loss to Kay (14-0) – 56-14 (2013) and 45-17 (2014). Katy scored three first-quarter touchdowns behind the rushing attack of Texas target, Kyle Porter (http://247sports.com/Player/Kyle-Porter-37371), who ultimately toted the ball 32 times for 212 yards and all five Tiger touchdowns. In the 35-17 defeat, Hemphill-Mapps led his side in targets and receptions, nabbing six balls for a combined 50 yards. Coming into the matchup, Manvel had averaged 53 points per contest, but the Mavericks were held to just 238 total yards of offense; their fewest all season.
— Wide receiver, Davion Curtis (http://247sports.com/Player/Davion-Curtis-79953): In a rematch of last year’s 5A Division I Region III Final (Temple, 28-14), Richmond George Ranch (14-0) got their revenge, defeating Temple (12-2) in a 59-46 shootout. Despite the high-scoring affair – featuring 303 passing yards for the Wildcats – Curtis only came down with one reception for three yards, as the Longhorns did a wonderful job curtailing Temple’s top threat.
— Linebacker/athlete, Demarco Boyd (http://247sports.com/Player/Demarco-Boyd-53443): Boyd rumbled his way for 68 yards rushing and two touchdowns – all in the second half – to turn the tide of the contest and lead Gilmer (14-0) to a 24-15 victory over the Atlanta Rabbits (8-5). With the win, the Buckeyes have now won 30-straight games. The 5-foot-11, 228-pound wrecking ball also caught three passes for 18 yards – two of which materialized into fourth-down conversions on Gilmer’s final scoring drive. The jack-of-all-trades athlete also made a huge impact on defense, recording two tackles for loss to go along with multiple gang tackles. With the win, Gilmer has secured the 4A Division II Region II crown, and is now set to face Celina (14-0) in the State Semifinals for the second time in two seasons. Gilmer took last year’s showing between the two 4A powerhouses, 67-14. The matchup is set to take place on Friday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium on the campus of West Mesquite High School.
Class of 2017
— Quarterback, Sam Ehlinger (http://247sports.com/Player/Sam-Ehlinger-65584): With each and every game, we’re seeing just how dominant Sam Ehlinger (http://247sports.com/Player/Sam-Ehlinger-65584) can be. In fact, his stat line just keeps improving as the Westlake Chaparrals (13-1) advance deeper into the playoffs. After accounting for five touchdowns (three passing, one rush and one receiving) last week, Ehlinger upped the ante, recording seven scores this past Saturday in a 49-28 dismantling of Humble Atascocita (12-2). In total, the three-star quarterback threw for 258 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for another 169 yards and two scores. On a 47-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, Ehlinger passed Nick Foles’ mark of 5,658 career passing yards. The Chaps’ will now face powerhouse Allen (14-0). The 6A Division I State Semifinal matchup will occur at McLane Stadium in Waco on Saturday afternoon. Allen, led by myriad division-one prospects, has won 57-straight contests.
— Defensive end, Lagaryonn Carson (http://247sports.com/Player/Lagaryonn-Carson-79999): Liberty-Eylau’s (12-2) season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, as the Leopards fell to Argyle (13-1) in the 4A Division I Region II Finals for the second-straight year. Despite Carson’s two sacks and many quarterback hurries, the Eagles put up 20-straight second-half points to erase a nine-point Leopard lead to take the matchup, 32-29.

Per another poster, Horns247 is reporting that Brendan Ferns is trying to reach out to Texas. Why? I don't know. But, I did read that he's very smart and wants to major in petroleum engineering. Hummmm.
Watching the Hudl for this 4-star Army All-American shows he has some speed and good vision as a RB, while possessing great hands as a receiver. But he really shines at LB where he strikes quickly, covers well, likes to hit, and wraps up his targets.
He's listed as the #2 ILB by 247Sports and is fielding 28 nationwide offers. Texas needs a stud ILB in a bad way.
2015 STATS
118 tackles / 10 TFL / 2 sacks / 5 PBU / 2 interceptions / 2 FF ..... 1066 yards on 154 rushing attempts / 7 YPC / 18 RuTD / 27 receptions for 600 three foot units / 4 RecTD
Linebacker Brendan Ferns walked into the locker room following his final football game Friday evening, having left it all on the field like he always did. Ferns played nearly every snap, catching nine passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns, rushing five times for 55 yards and another score, and racking up 15 tackles in what was a 42-38 defeat.
“He’s the type of kid that even when probably everyone in the stadium, both fanbases knew we were going to him, he’d still make a play,” St. Clairsville coach Brett McLean said. “He stepped up on the biggest stages and the biggest thing I’ll remember as a coach is that when our backs were against the wall he was a ‘give it to me’ kind of kid. He wanted that opportunity when it was crunch time. That’s a really powerful thing.”
“He’s a one in a million type of kid,” McLean said. He’s coached several Division-I recruits including Fern’s older brother Michael who is a linebacker at West Virginia. “I wish I had 50 of him but I might not see another one like him in 50 more years of coaching.
“Between the lines he’s just an intellectual player. I think he understood more than just the play call but the whole game plan all together. He made a tremendous difference in our offense and defense being the quarterback of our defense as a MIKE backer and being an extension for us as coaches.
“I think he’s going to be phenomenal at the next level.”

I'm starting to think there is more coaching talent on the high school level here in Texas than on the college level. How many of them have gone to the college level and absolutely kicked ass? Mike Jenks, was a total badass at Steele and now with Tech he has done well enough to be considered at other schools. Traylor has been fantastic at Texas. Chad Morris is another.
I'll throw another name out there. Gary Green was the DC at SA Madison and is now the head coach at Sam Houston High. I know he is a Baylor grad and still pretty loyal to his old school, but I think he would be a fantastic DB coach on the college level. Dude had a HOF NFL career, he knows the game on every level and the Sam Houston community loves him.
I actually believe that if a head coach like strong did nothing but filled out all of his position spots with head coaches from Texas he would have one of the best staffs in the game. That is how much coaching talent I believe is out there in Texas high school football.

HORNSPORTS: After a disappointing season that ended on a bit of a high following a 23-17 victory over Baylor, all eyes turn to the search for a new offensive coordinator. Sonny Cumbie was in Austin on Monday according to a report by Orangebloods.com’s Anwar Richardson. Cumbie is the top candidate for the job and is expected to be offered a contract in the range of 1 million dollars per year. We checked in with a high school coach Head Coach from the Fort Worth area to get his opinion on what Cumbie brings to the table.
“It solves the glaring weakness in Austin of getting and developing quarterbacks”, our source told us. “If (Joe) Wickline and (Jay) Norvell stay, Texas will be able to shed its image of not being able to develop offensive talent into NFL prospects. You never hear that about their defense. Plus he’s a stud on the recruiting circuit and is great with high school coaches”.
We also spoke to another coach in the Tarrant County area regarding Cumbie and he had this to say, “The hiring of Sonny Cumbie will significantly change the recruiting game for Texas which has been a problem for several years. Texas will begin to attract the athletes they have had in the past and put themselves back on the map.”
We also spoke to an offensive coordinator at a Houston area high school who also serves as their program's recruiting coordinator. This coach was extremely excited at the potential of Cumbie at Texas and talked to us about what he might bring to Austin. "It gives UT a guy that knows a wide open system", he said. "He is not only a great coach but a really nice guy that is very well respected by coaches in Texas. He is one of the really great guys in the business. He has played the QB position at a high level so he brings a different type of experience with him".
We’ve heard these things in the past from other high school coaches, but this is just more confirmation of the impact Cumbie can make from two coaches in his own back yard who have great familiarity with the TCU program.
+++++
While Texas might be in full turnover mode this week, you’d never know it from talking to recruits. Texas coaches once again hit the road this week and had several in home visits. Linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary was in Arlington to meet with Bowie offensive lineman Tope Imade who hosted Joe Wickline just last week. Imade told us the visit was much of the same, and they just talked about how he could fit in at Texas and what to expect from his freshman year. I did ask Imade about the coaching rumors and if he had any thoughts on it, and the “Big Grizz” gave us a succinct answer. “It’s not my job to comment on changes to the coaching staff”. For anyone wondering, Imade is solid to Texas and is looking forward to getting the next part of his life started in Austin.
+++++
One thing to note is that the dead period starts on the 14th of this month, so the Texas coaches will need to get their ducks in a row particularly for the early enrollee’s in the class. The obvious big target is Shane Buechele of Arlington Lamar. Buechele is committed to the Texas program and will be enrolling early, but it’s only fair you introduce him to his next coordinator before he makes that decision. Once the dead period begins, face to face meetings are not allowed, even if the recruit is on campus. They are only permitted contact through letters or phone calls to the recruit or parent. This dead period will run from December 14-January 13.
+++++
There’s also been some talk that Cumbie would present an advantage in the recruitment of Shawn Robinson who is currently committed to TCU. I did some checking this week and while Robinson loves Cumbie and values his relationship with him, he also has a strong relationship with Gary Patterson. At this point I think Texas is also happy with the commitment of Sam Ehlinger in the 2017 class. Does that mean we won’t see Texas pursue Robinson if they get Cumbie? Not necessarily, but I wouldn’t bet on something happening there.
+++++
From reports it looks like Texas will be replacing everyone on the offensive staff with the exception of Jeff Traylor and possibly Jay Norvell. We did some looking around to see common links through Cumbie’s coaching history to see what kind of staff he might be able to assemble.
Offensive Line – Chris Thomsen – Arizona State
Background: Thomsen played at TCU and Abilene Christian and spent most of his time coaching at the high school level in Texas before moving on to Abilene Christian. While at ACU he turned their program into a powerhouse program. He was then hired on at Texas Tech under Tommy Tubberville and served as Interim Head Coach during the transition between Tubberville and Kingsbury. Thomsen moved on to Arizona State in 2013 as offensive line coach. He’s known as a relentless recruiter as well and could really strengthen that area for the Longhorns.
Link to Cumbie: Besides the obvious overlap at Texas Tech, Thomsen is well known around the state for his work at both the high school level and Abilene Christian.
Potential Hurdles: Thomsen is expected to handle play calling duties for Arizona State in their bowl game, and could be a candidate for offensive coordinator under Mike Norvell at Memphis
Bottom line: Thomsen seems like the slam dunk candidate at this position as no other names have really been mentioned.
Offensive Line – Joe Wickline – Texas
Background: Wickline seems like he’s on the way out, but if he wanted to stay I would bet Cumbie would consider him for the job. Wickline is still one of the best teachers of the position in the nation, and his lack of recruiting prowess could be covered up by key hires at other positions.
Link to Cumbie: None, but Wickline is adept at teaching spread concepts along the line and worked with Dana Holgorsen who runs a similar offense.
Potential Hurdles: Sources close to Wickline told us he is very unhappy and did not get along at all with Shawn Watson. He would also likely be behind Thomsen in the pecking order.
Bottom line: Wickline has done a pretty solid job turning around a bad position group and finding gems along the line like Connor Williams. If he were to stay I think it could work out for him in Austin.
Running Backs – Mike Jinks – Texas Tech
Background: The former Judson Rocket and San Angelo State quarterback really became a big name when he took over at Cibolo Steele High School where he led them to a state championship. Jinks was hired as the Texas Tech running backs coach and is one of their top recruiters.
Link to Cumbie: The two overlapped and worked closely together in Lubbock.
Potential Hurdles: Jinks is well liked at Tech and was named Assistant Head Coach prior to this season. Texas will need to sell him on a potential move.
Bottom line: Jinks is a stud recruiter with a lot of clout in the state who could really help in an area where Tommie Robinson has largely failed. The running back position should be reserved for a top recruiter and Jinks along with Jeff Traylor would give Texas serious credibility with Texas high school coaches.
Running Backs/Receiver – Curtis Luper – TCU
Background: The Sherman, TX native had a playing career at Oklahoma State before moving on to coaching in 1995. He served on staffs at both the college and high school levels including the Auburn team that won a national title in 2012. He’s been at TCU since 2013 and has coached both receivers and running backs. Luper has strong ties to the state and is one of TCU’s best recruiters.
Link to Cumbie: Currently on staff at TCU and experienced in coaching multiple positions.
Potential Hurdles: Patterson might not like replacing a large number of assistants, and Luper could be in line for a co-offensive coordinator tag to keep him in Fort Worth.
Bottom line: Like Jinks, Luper would bring a lot to the table recruiting wise and could be slotted to coach receivers or backs due to his experience.
Receiver – Jay Norvell – Texas
Background: Norvell took over the Texas offense this season, and while he experienced his ups and downs, he did an admirable job with what he was given. Norvell is an experienced coach with a solid recruiting reputation.
Link to Cumbie: None, but Norvell does provide some stability in Austin with recruits and players.
Potential Hurdles: Norvell is interviewing with Arizona State to be their offensive coordinator, and could have some other opportunities. He also might not match up with what Cumbie would want from his coach.
Bottom line: Like Wickline, Norvell is one of the top coaches at his position in the nation. While he isn’t an ace recruiter, he’s certainly solid enough to deserve a spot on the staff with his coaching ability.

The selection process for the Pool of Six bowls was based on preferences expressed by the SEC’s bowl eligible schools, input from the SEC’s affiliated bowls, travel considerations, attention to previous matchups and additional relevant factors.“The Pool of Six participants are determined after conversations with bowl partners and discussions with school personnel in order to create a lineup of compelling bowl games for our schools and their fans,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “This process provides an opportunity to create intriguing matchups, consider potential attendance factors and variations of assignments to help prevent repetitive postseason destinations.”

HORNSPORTS: It's been a wild couple of days on the 40 acres following the pursuit of TCU Co-Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie. A brief recap, Cumbie was interviewed by Charlie Strong on Sunday night and traveled to Austin with his wife yesterday to survey the campus and facilities. Since then, the Longhorn world has been in a holding pattern waiting for Cumbie to make his decision. After a busy day yesterday, news was very slow today. 247 reported Cumbie met with Patterson today but no decision had been reached yet. They also reported Cumbie was out recruiting for TCU. Our own Will Baizer confirmed this with sources at Cedar Hill earlier today. So where do we stand?
1) Cumbie is the top target. He's been offered a lot of money (Somewhere north of 1M per year on a 3 year deal according to reports) and total control of the offense. Chip Brown of HornsDigest also reported Texas was willing to make concessions for Cumbie including changes in practice to maximize an up tempo offense, and a different schedule on Sunday so Cumbie could attend church with his family.
2) Cumbie is very comfortable at TCU and is in line to slide into the sole OC position if Doug Meacham takes a job this year or next. Part of that has to be weighing on him along with the decision to uproot his family and move them to the capital city.
3) Cumbie recruiting could be something but it also could be nothing. Many coaches (see Will Muschamp) have been out recruiting for their current schools while negotiating a deal for a new job. The big news for Texas fans is that no decision has been made, and while Cumbie was indeed recruiting for TCU today, you would think if it was a no there would be movement on someone else. I never would have guessed this would drag into three days but it's starting to look that way according to a report from the Austin American Statesman.
4) Texas is scheduled to meet with Shane Buechele tomorrow night and it could be very bad to show up without a plan at offensive coordinator. The good news is Buechele is slated to take his official visit this weekend, so if Texas can get a guy in place by then they should be able to calm the waters there.
5) By all reports, Cumbie is a good man of tremendous faith and I don't think he's dragging this out for any nefarious purpose. It's a huge decision for him muddied by the situation surrounding Charlie Strong's job security and the black hole at the quarterback position currently on campus at Texas. If I'm Charlie Strong I wait the night out, and if I don't have an answer in the morning I move on to plan B for the time being.
So what is Plan B?
By all reports it would be Tulsa Co-OC Sterlin Gilbert. We told you about Gilbert in a November edition of Burnt Ends where we previewed candidates for the upcoming job. Here's a refresher from that article.
Sterlin Gilbert – Co-offensive Coordinator/WR and QB coach – Tulsa
Bio: Gilbert is a former star quarterback at San Angelo State who cut his teeth in the Texas high school ranks at Abilene Cooper and Temple High School. Gilbert helped install offenses at Houston, Eastern Illinois, and Bowling Green. Gilbert developed Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into a pro prospect and Harlon Hill (FCS Heisman) winner at Eastern Illinois. A student of the Art Briles offense, Gilbert was hired by Phil Montgomery when he took the job at Tulsa. Gilbert has great ties to the state with experience installing offense from his time under Briles, Montgomery, and Dino Babers. He also has playcalling experience at both Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green.
Obstacles: This might not be a big enough name for some people, and Gilbert hasn’t had a big time coordinator job.
Advantages: He’d be a fool to say no, and it wouldn’t cost nearly as much as the others.
Gilbert's offense might even fit the Texas personnel a little better since it employs more of a power run look to compliment the spacing and wide open passing game. If I'm Charlie Strong, I'm headed for Tulsa tomorrow to see Gilbert. If Cumbie is still taking his time, you can tell him that you have to interview candidates in the case that they miss on him. While Gilbert doesn't give you instant recruiting cred like Cumbie, he is well known in the state and should have some good ties.

I have seen nothing of Gilbert/Maddox that would make me excited about those two (if hired). I don't think any of them has what it takes to save Strong in 2016, unfortunately.
But I have the weekend off, so I'm going to watch a lot of Tulsa this weekend. Sigh.

OrangeBloods says they're hearing TCU OC, Doug Meacham, has landed the head coaching job at Tulane.
Makes more sense that Cumbie decided to stay at TCU.

Tulsa had a great offensive year, but Strong has more problems than just offense.
He needs a lot to go right in 2016.

Bobby Burton just said, that it appears that Doug Meacham is the next HC at Tulane. That might explain a thing or two.

Apparently there are reports that Doug Meacham & Tulane were happening…sources tell FootballScoop that Meacham is not even a candidate.

Meacham in Houston recruiting and hasn't even talked about the job, much less interviewed for it. Some 3rd rate guy in Louisiana threw that out and everyone believed it.

He's the top candidate for the ULM HC job.

24/7 reporting Strong is reaching out to several people who have worked with Gilbert and will then make a decision on an offer.
He'd like an OC in place by Friday.

OrangeBloods reporting Sterlin Gilbert has left Austin and a formal agreement could come down tomorrow.
They're also hearing the Tulsa football players should be informed tonight of the decision.

Not excited at all about this potential hire. But anything is better than the current situation.

After some research I found that Tulsa's Total Team Offense ranked 16th this year in production amongst all FBS schools. Not bad considering the situation we find ourselves in, in the same rankings Texas was 94th. Hope Gilbert's picked up some of the play calling knowledge. Tulsa also put up the most points on the playoff bound Sooners so there's some positive vibes.

OrangeBloods with one more report that Gilbert has informed the head coach of Tulsa that he intends to take the UT job.
The potential assistants he will bring with him remain the same: Matt Mattox (OL, Tulsa) and Luke Wells (WRs, Utah State).

Correct.
This will be one to watch considering he plans on committing before LB Dontavious Jackson.

Any more info on Brendan Ferns, the ILB from Ohio. Kind of strange if Texas doesn't follow up on his interest in the program being that he's a highly touted player at a position of need.

Outside of Hagar, do we have any other inside linebackers in the program? I could see us taking two.

Dalton Santos returns next year, the only other ILB I can think of.

Someone mentioned about a senior retiring this weekend for whatever reason, and a lot of people think it's Dalton Santos. Anthony Wheeler was projected to play inside coming out of HS. I'm pretty sure Edwin Freeman played some ILB prior to his injury (IMO he played well there). I definitely think Texas would take both Dontavious Jackson and David Reese, and it seems like they feel confident in both (according to 24/7, that was the impression Ferns' father left).

Per Orangebloods Strong is interviewing Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin this morning. Sounds like a weird twist to things.
