Let's show some math. You can estimate true infection rate by looking at seroprevalence. Arizona is at 3.4% prevalence right now.

https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/infectious-disease-epidemiology/covid-19/dashboards/index.php

Their low prevalence rate explains why their new case positive rate is so high. Not that many have gotten the virus in AZ until now. So:

7 million x 3.4%=238000

Arizona's official case number is 101,000. So Arizona's "true" spread is about 2.3x higher than the official tally. This number seems reasonable given the low prevalence. Now let's extract the IFR from that number.

1810/238000 = .007. About 7x higher than the flu's IFR.

th:lollden

From what I have read and thought about the best way to get the "True" number of cases is to simply take the death total and divide it by the estimated mortality rate, somewhere in the neighorhood of .005

"If X number of people died, and the rate of death for all people who get it is Y, how many people would have had the disease to produce X deaths?"

That tells you the rough number of cases about two weeks ago, since the course of the disease is about two weeks from contracting it to death in almost all cases.

Then take the growth rate and multiply that figure by the rate twice (figure transmission takes about 7 days) to find a reasonable estimate for the total cases current and past. https://rt.live/ gets you that multiplier to some degree of reasonableness.

A lot of estimation, but you get a fairly reasonable working number.

thats based on a 25 day timer that starts from infection. unless you know that all these people tested positive literally the day they had the infection (as opposed to when they became symptomatic), then im not sure you can push the timetable quite that far back.

but thats just my basic intuition... not an expert obviously. i'd welcome being corrected

Give or take 25 days. We can say 3 to 4 weeks? Nonetheless, we won't be able to start seeing a clear trend for at least a few more days.

it all depends at what point in the infection cycle the influx of new cases were identified, tbh. but i generally agree that we are still in a bubble, margin of error, zone

I think the interesting question is what if there isn’t some massive spike in deaths? To me, that begs a lot of harder but more interesting questions. Assume that the mortality rate remains largely unaffected (meaning, it continues to drop) or has a modest uptick (meaning it goes flat or slightly upward). What does that mean going forward? I think some really tough policy decisions will have to be made at that point about continuing to re-open the economy or not.

And for the record, I’m not saying the fatality rate will or won’t change or that COVID is not something serious (since I know some will think I’m implying something). That said, if we can show that we’re getting more effective at treating this shit, that’s something.

those are legit questions... and the potential implications of that could be (but i cant verify or have any data for) that a higher proportion of the new wave of cases were younger people, that the virus has gotten weaker, or we've simply done better at identifying and treating it due to more available testing letting us diagnose cases earlier, on average.

i dont have the data in front of me about hospitalization rates, etc.

and strictly looking at mortality might not tell us the whole picture, there's still a lot we dont know about potential long term effects. we already know that the virus can sit on the heart, or on neurons, etc. how long will antibodies be effective for? there's still a lot we dont know.

Better treatments is certainly helping, but it all depends on the hospitalization rate now. If this trend continues, it won't matter what treatments we have if they can't reach people because hospitals are overwhelmed.

This is what bad leadership gets you. The data is incomplete because we completely bungled testing early on, but I know in Texas it was about 15% at the peak of the first wave in April. Texas was doing such little testing back then though.

Yeah it was nearly impossible to get a test early on out here unless you were 65+ and had symptoms.

They're returning to some of those restrictions, mainly being that you have to be symptomatic.

And now there are so many symptomatics that people are driving to other towns to try and get a test because testing sites are running out. We're doing nearly triple the testing we had back during the first spike, yet we're STILL seeing a shortage while the positivity rate fluctuates between 15% and 20%.

We'll see, death rate seems pretty closely correlated to infection saturation.

https://twitter.com/_stah/status/1280424841347244032

A cautionary tale should be Iran. We seem to be on the same curve. They, too, opened up early. You can see their case curve pretty much matches their death curve.

https://i.imgur.com/4M2bZ0G.png
https://i.imgur.com/gtNFQn4.png

The tweet above shows on a similar "double hump" trend.

But my gut tells me we probably won't see the plateau we had when the East Coast was out of control because if hit their nursing homes hard, and we're more aware of protecting those now. None of the other vulnerable, spiking states right now have the kind of population density and mass transit elements of the East Coast. And we seem to understand how to better treat it. I think we might inch close to a 2K death day in a couple of weeks, and then it will start to roll off a bit quicker than our first plateau.

Now the question remains about reopening. I don't know. We are probably finally at the point where the cure could be worse than disease, but if the moron "shutdown" skeptics and the politicians who listen to them took heed in March and shut the country down hard, we'd be looking at Europe's curve today.

Deaths lag cases by two to three weeks. We have gotten better treatments, but even so you can't have four times the number of cases and not have more deaths.

Aiming to prevent or contain every case of COVID-19 is simply no longer sustainable at this stage in the pandemic. We need to accept that COVID-19 will be with us for some time and to find ways to deal with it.

The current and proposed measures for reopening will continue to disproportionately impact lower income groups, Black and other racialized groups, recent immigrants to Canada, Indigenous peoples and other populations. And it risks significantly harming our children, particularly the very young, by affecting their development, with life-long consequences in terms of education, skills development, income and overall health.

Canada must work to minimize the impact of COVID-19 by using measures that are practical, effective and compatible with our values and sense of social justice. We need to focus on preventing deaths and serious illness by protecting the vulnerable while enabling society to function and thrive.

Elimination of COVID-19 is not a practical objective for Canada until we have a vaccine. While there is hope for a vaccine to be developed soon, we must be realistic about the time it will actually take to develop and evaluate it and then deliver an immunization campaign covering the entire population. We cannot sustain universal control measures indefinitely.

We need to accept that there will be cases and outbreaks of COVID-19. We need localized control measures that are risk-based. We should consistently reassess quarantine and isolation periods, recommendations for physical distancing and non-medical masks, and travel restrictions based on current best evidence and levels of risk.

At the same time we must improve infection prevention and control in long-term care and congregate living settings. We should provide support for people living in the community who need to or choose to isolate when the disease is active, as well as those who have been adversely affected by COVID-19, or the consequences of the public health measures.

Canadians have developed a fear of COVID-19. Going forward, they have to be supported in understanding their true level of risk, and learning how to deal with this disease, while getting on with their lives – back to work, back to school, and back to healthy lives and vibrant, active communities across this country.

We acknowledge the heroic work that has been done in recent months by many across all levels of government and the public and private sector, and the sacrifices that Canadians have made to get to this stage. As we look forward, Canada must balance its response to COVID-19.

It's amazing he thinks a death reported a day or two later completely flips the script. That's the whole reason worldmeter provides 3-day and 7-day rolling averages to smooth out the weekend lulls and early week jumps. Such grasping at straws, though I guess if you're a Trumptard you have been doing it for five years so it's second nature by now.

:lol yeah.

He thinks he's discovered some arcane knowledge about how these stats are collected. We all understand that the death count today doesn't mean that many people died today. We know some of those deaths are anywhere from 2 weeks ago to 2 months ago now just being counted. But what the idiot doesn't understand is that however many people died in the past week are being way, way undercounted, and those stats will backlogged just the same. It evens out.

We know spread and hospitalizations are accelerating, from the increasing positive rate to increasing hospitalizations and to all the stories from frontline workers saying how hospitals in these hotspots are becoming warzones.

No one in their right mind would think deaths are likely to keep trending downward as they were in mid may and june.

Luckily the data will be recorded to the state dashboards. Public health officials need data ASAP. Don't know what Trump's play is here. The chain of custody for the data is hospitals to country/state health department to CDC. Maybe he's planning something like "our data doesn't match the county/state level data after review, we found that 50,000 deaths never happened!"

Dr Robert Katz, founding director of the Yale‐Griffin Prevention Research Center, observed that by flattening the curve “you don't prevent deaths, you just change the dates.” But a temporary lockdown could at least prevent everyone from getting sick at once, which would be catastrophic.

If flattening the curve was the primary goal of policymakers, Sweden was largely a success. New York, on the other hand, was not, despite widespread closures and strict enforcement of social distancing policies.

The reason New York failed and Sweden succeeded probably has relatively little to do with the fact that bars and restaurants were open in Sweden. Or that New York’s schools were closed while Sweden’s were open. As Weiss explains, the difference probably isn’t related to lockdowns at all. It probably has much more to do with the fact that New York failed to protect the most at-risk populations: the elderly and infirm.

Using New York is a red herring, too. WAY more dense than even the biggest cities in Sweden. And people act like New York locked down when there was a hint of a spike. They were already massively seeded by the time they locked down. Those deaths were essentially baked in. Prior, DeBlasio and the health commissioner were telling people as late as Feb to go to restaurants and take the subway. So New York's situation was a result of not locking down fast enough and encouraging activity. And talk about protecting the nursing homes.

Three-quarters of Swedes who have died have been either in nursing homes or receiving at-home care.

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-05-sweden-coronavirus-deaths-health-authorities.html

Um, guess why it spreads into these facilities in the first place? Because you don't fuckin' lockdown hard enough. Staff who works at nursing home parties at the bar over the weekend, contracts it, passes it on to the residents. Not hard to understand.

If case numbers weren't actually increasing and just a result of "whack" testing, then why are FL's hospitalizations and deaths at record highs?

ElNono

Luckily the data will be recorded to the state dashboards. Public health officials need data ASAP. Don't know what Trump's play is here. The chain of custody for the data is hospitals to country/state health department to CDC. Maybe he's planning something like "our data doesn't match the county/state level data after review, we found that 50,000 deaths never happened!"

This is likely too, IMO... probably close down the info spigot, and once numbers eventually leak and call into question the 'official' numbers, blame the MSM, witch hunt, etc.

ElNono
07-16-2020, 03:06 AM
The saving grace here would be the House appointing a panel and issuing subpoenas to hospitals to receive the numbers they transmitted to DC... likely would start off a new legal battle, but would actually be telling if the administration opposes.

That's why you're derp.

If you gotta cry about it, go ahead. I don't think you're smart enough to improve yourself.

I understand the concept of unreliable tests and immune systems. I understand a lot of concepts you disregard for your convenience.

The outbreaks at day cares and summer camps don't apply because... SARSCov2 doesn't transmit when you're taking notes and doing busywork at a desk surrounded by a bunch of other kids in a tightly packed room?

Lets do some math.

My wife has, typically, 160 students in her classes.

If only one out of every hundred kids were sick and could transmit it, there is an 80% chance that at least one of them would be in her classes. (.99 to the 160th power=odds that none of them have it)

The odds that none of the 3000 kids and staff have it, is a number so small excel cannot display it, even in scientific format. I am not even sure the program tried. :lol

Typical class room has them packed in at 26 to 32 students each. Social distancing guidelines would mean that would be about 7 or so, given the dimensions of her classroom.

Let's assume you want to have open schools with masks and distancing.

YWho is teaching the other 23 kids? Assuming you maybe push it. You need one teacher per what? 8 students? You now need four times as many qualified teachers.

Assume you magic THAT up.... Where do you put these other classes? Instabuild three or four new schools, with modulars, bathrooms?

... and if you have some portion of them do distance learning, which seems to be the case... why fucking have the in person exposure.

Reopening schools.. what a fucking joke idea, from a joke administration, defended by people who are jokes.

Except no one is laughing.

FOX 35 News found this out after asking Orange County Health Officer Dr. Raul Pino whether two coronavirus victims who were in their 20s had any underlying conditions. One of his answers surprised us.

“The first one didn’t have any. He died in a motorcycle accident,” Pino said.

Dr. Pino was asked if the man’s data was removed.
“I don’t think so. I have to double-check,” Pino said. “We were arguing, discussing, or trying to argue with the state. Not because of the numbers -- it’s 100…it doesn’t make any difference if it's 99 -- but the fact that the individual didn’t die from COVID-19…died in the crash. But you could actually argue that it could have been the COVID-19 that caused him to crash. I don’t know the conclusion of that one.”

There are still two people in their 20s on Orange County’s data list for coronavirus deaths.
