“Death rates are up 40 percent over what they were pre-pandemic,” said Davison of OneAmerica's group life policy holders.

To illustrate just how severe the current death rate is, Davison said a 1 in 200-year catastrophe would likely only cause a 10 percent increase over pre-pandemic deaths.

Notably, Davison said that even if COVID-19 is not listed on a person’s death certificate, that doesn’t mean the virus didn’t play a role. For example, Davison said a person can contract COVID-19 and recover, but the virus could have triggered a separate illness that eventually leads to death.

“It may not all be Covid on their death certificates, but deaths are up in just huge, huge numbers,” Davidson said.

Micah Pollak, associate professor of economics at Indiana University Northwest, told The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/07/true-number-covid-deaths-us-likely-undercounted-experts?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other) that high rates of mortality with COVID-19 along with disability are likely to continue to go up as more people catch the virus.

“We really don’t know what the tail of this thing looks like. The further you get out [from infection], the longer time you have to potentially develop some kind of complications,” said Pollak.

January 2022 COVID deaths (~60,000) in the US exceeded US deaths in the Vietnam War (~58,000)

You're darn tootin', son. And in the first 8 days of February we've lost 25,818 Americans dead of the COVID for 3,227 per day dead. Multiply that out to 28 days of February and oh, daddy...90,000+ for the month, Winester. Couple that with your find for January and we've got 150k of Americans dead of the COVID for the first 2 months of 2022.

Although reported COVID-19 deaths between Jan 1, 2020, and Dec 31, 2021, totalled 5·94 million worldwide, we estimate that 18·2 million (95% uncertainty interval 17·1–19·6) people died worldwide because of the COVID-19 pandemic (as measured by excess mortality) over that period.

At the country level, the highest numbers of cumulative excess deaths due to COVID-19 were estimated in India (4·07 million [3·71–4·36]), the USA (1·13 million [1·08–1·18]), Russia (1·07 million [1·06–1·08]), Mexico (798 000 [741 000–867 000]), Brazil (792 000 [730 000–847 000]), Indonesia (736 000 [594 000–955 000]), and Pakistan (664 000 [498 000–847 000])https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02796-3/fulltext

Putting stock in this gov't for your parents well being is unwise, BH.

Just remember David Gates & his sworn allegiance to his father...

"Everything I Own"

"I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again"

And the secret he'll take with him when he goes...

"Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go"

Harping on death and hospitalization alone is more or less artificial, especially when discussing a disease like COVID. Not that you give a shit about COVID's chronic dimensions and systemic sequelae. To name just a few, cardiac, immunological, neurological, renal, psychological and vascular problems have been clocked. Long COVID is already a major cause of absenteeism and quitting the work force, over time it's likely to be a drag on economies wherever it has been allowed to spread unchecked.

The life expectancy drop was detailed in provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2021/202107.htm) (NCHS). Life expectancy declined 1.5 years from 2019 to 2020, from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77.3 years in 2020. Life expectancy during that period was the lowest since 2003 and represented the biggest 1-year drop since World War II, when it declined 2.9 years between 1942 and 1943.

COVID deaths contributed 74% to the recent life expectancy decline. Other factors included rises in deaths from accidents or unintentional injuries, part of which included drug overdose deaths, which reached an all-time high in 2020. The CDC said other contributors included homicide, diabetes, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.

The team found racial differences in life expectancy declines, with Hispanic Americans, especially males, experiencing the largest decline in 2020. The group typically has longer life expectancy than Black or White Americans.

COVID's role in the life expectancy drop also varied by race. The disease was responsible for 90% of the drop in the Hispanic population, 68% in the White population, and 59% in the Black population.

In another analysis that sized up COVID deaths, a new report (https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2022/07/1-8-us-deaths-during-pandemic-ascribed-covid-19) from National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers said prior to Omicron variant circulation, COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death, only topped by heart disease and cancer.

Swiss Re is one of the world's largest reinsurance companies

Covid-19 may lead to longest period of peacetime excess mortality, says new Swiss Re report | Swiss Re (https://www.swissre.com/press-release/Covid-19-may-lead-to-longest-period-of-peacetime-excess-mortality-says-new-Swiss-Re-report/eadc133c-01bd-49e8-9f3a-a3025a3380e6)

Report suggests potential excess mortality in the general population of up to 3% for the US by 2033 and 2.5% in the UK, the longest period of elevated peacetime excess mortality in the US

Key driver of excess mortality is the lingering impact of COVID-19; both as a direct cause of death, and as a contributor to cardiovascular mortality

Reducing the impact of COVID-19 on elderly and vulnerable populations will be key to excess mortality returning to zero

Winehole23
11-23-2024, 01:43 PM
Excess mortality in the general population is an important indicator for insurers, as shifts in the major causes of death may require a reassessment of additional risk in their mortality portfolios.

The current levels of excess mortality are of concern. However, there are a range of tools available for insurers and reinsurers to manage this trend. Specific actions include adapting the underwriting philosophy, risk appetite, and mortality assumptions in pricing and reserving. Insurers can be proactive in targeting prevention programmes for policyholders, helping them in the joint effort to support longer, healthier lives.

Again, no one gives a fuck about the China Virus at this time. This factually isn't true -- there's still rampant global transmission, and COVID continues to put a kink in economic growth, sidelining millions from work.

COVID was the #3 cause of death in the USA in 2023, behind cancer and heart disease, and the chronic dimension of the disease continues to disable a lot of people.

COVID related research is very active, and any resulting vaccines and treatments will be alleviate a lot of sickness and suffering worldwide.

There are a number of good reasons journalism and research about COVID haven't gone away, the main one being that COVID hasn't gone away.

Swiss Re is one of the world's largest reinsurance companies

Actuaries aren't partisan or kooky -- insurance companies need good data to write profitable policies.

Australia, 5 years in

For the first eight months of 2024, against a baseline that includes anticipated COVID-19 deaths:

total mortality was 2% higher than predicted;
COVID-19 mortality was 70% higher than predicted;
Non-COVID respiratory mortality was 8% higher than predicted, with pneumonia deaths 14% higher; and
these outcomes are all statistically significant.

There have been five deaths from COVID-19 for every death from influenza.
Mortality from non-respiratory causes has been close to predicted.

In principle, the burden of respiratory disease -- and the corresponding cost to businesses --could be greatly reduced by sanitizing indoor air and wearing masks during flu season.
