How Many People in the U.S. Are Hospitalized With COVID-19? Who Knows?

The Trump administration told hospitals to stop reporting data to the CDC, and report it to HHS instead. Vice President Mike Pence said the information would continue to be released publicly. It hasn’t worked out as promised.

, the move has created widespread confusion, leaving some states in the dark about their hospitals’ remaining bed and intensive care capacity and, at least temporarily, removing this information from public view. As a result, it has been unclear how many people are in hospitals being treated for COVID-19 at a time when the number of infected patients nationally has been soaring.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have been seen as a key metric of both the coronavirus’s toll and the health care system’s ability to deal with it.

the website for the administration’s new portal (https://protect-public.hhs.gov/pages/covid19-module) promised to update numbers on a daily basis, but, as of Friday morning,

the site hadn’t been updated since July 23. :lol

“The most pernicious portion of it is that at the state level and at the regional level

we lost our situational awareness,”

the rollout of this has been absolutely a catastrophe.”

These problems mean that

our hospitalization data — a crucial metric of the COVID-19 pandemic — is, for now, unreliable, and

likely an undercount. :lol

We do not think that either the state-level hospitalization data or the new federal data is reliable in isolation,”

Meh, I saw the value of just over a thousand on worldometers. If their data is inaccurate, I don't see how that's on me.

The data is just what they a happen to receive on a certain day.
The data gets better if you look at it over a longer time period.
Which is why so many of these graphs display the x axis as a bar (histogram). And then do some different types of averaging when they then draw it as a continuous line. We know we cant count deaths, infections, etc... in really small units of time because we dont receive it that way.

If you have a device that can track a moving object through very tiny units of time you get a more accurate view of its instantaneous and average speed.
We cant do this with data gathered in a counting fashion. This is something the foldren has huge trouble with.

The average number of daily COVID-19 deaths on a weekly basis has fallen from a peak of just over 2,000 to 700 or so. That’s a roughly 65% decline. And it’s no fluke. The figure has been dropping steadily since April.

Hold on. That last number for June 23 on the chart shows a huge jump. Should we be worried? Is this the much-dreaded surge some have been talking up?

Apparently not. A big part of that one-time gain came from a revision by one state: Delaware.

As Youyang Gu, an MIT data scientist who created the COVID 19-projections.com site, tweeted: “To put the increase in deaths in context, Delaware added 69 deaths today: ‘The revision came from identifying 67 deaths dating back to April.’ So if you take out those 67 deaths, the week-over-week deaths have not changed.”

Goldman Sachs’ state-level tracker shows similar trends. The volume of coronavirus tests has risen 23% in the past two weeks, but positive results have increased just 1.3 percentage points to 6.2%. Meanwhile, deaths have fallen over the past two weeks by 12%.

This is bad news for those who, for a variety of reasons, seek to plunge us back into lockdowns and social isolation, despite the proven devastating economic impacts that would have. If COVID-19 deaths aren’t rising, and they aren’t, the rationale for shutdowns evaporates.

But the rationale in the first place could be even weaker than first thought. The reason for this is that the deaths now attributed to COVID-19 might be grossly exaggerated. The evidence is substantial, and has been obvious for weeks. (We first wrote about it in late May.)

But the rationale in the first place could be even weaker than first thought. The reason for this is that the deaths now attributed to COVID-19 might be grossly exaggerated. The evidence is substantial, and has been obvious for weeks. (We first wrote about it in late May.)Columbus statue Karen

No, but that has caused them to be locked out.
Seems they get compared to their neighbors.

Denmark has also now twice made an exception of its neighbor, first opening up to tourists from all the other Nordic countries, but leaving Sweden out, and then last week opening up to tourists from most EU countries, and again excluding Sweden.
The justification is that Sweden — which unlike Denmark did not close schools, bars, restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, or sports clubs when the pandemic hit — has a much higher number of people testing positive for COVID-19.

To me that's less insane than the 27th largest county in the US (Hillsborough, which has Tampa, FL in it) having 378 deaths while the 28th largest nation in the world, South Korea, has 303. And South Korea hasn't had more than 2 deaths in any day in 3.5 months, while Florida is still going strong on COVID deaths. The Tampa area with more deaths than a pretty large country which got infected very early on. I mean really, fuck this country.

You have some serious reading comprehension issues. First you say I asked a question when I didn't, next you say I compared deaths to 2019, which I didn't. What I did was to say that 20m people maybe have been infected with COVID (according to same sources you folks use), next was to use the normal death rate pre-Covid and factor in the 20m people, how many would have died, and if they had COVID and were counted as COVID deaths through association instead of through cause, the deaths would be about 170K, about like they are now.

Call it coincidence all you like. The numbers are there for you to refute.

Define "excess death rate" from your current understanding.

Even here in DC, there's a farmer's market 2 blocks from me that I used to go to for produce pre-COVID . I walked by it this morning and it was fucking jam packed with no social distancing. Most people were wearing masks, but it was an open air food market where this virus started in the first fucking place, probably not smart to duplicate that.

People seem to ignore what isn't sudden and direct. If COVID-19 was like a virus out of a movie where it sat dormant for 4 days and then led to a a quick and immediate seizure where you puke your lungs out and die, everyone would be taking it extremely seriously.

Population 331 million in the US
200k is a drop in the bucket. Consider an aging baby boomer population and I would not be surprised if death rate would increase over the next ten years regardless of any pandemic. Covid numbers are completely unreliable, but even if they were correct, 200k is pretty small to make any slam dunk claim. I think it is plausible, but there are simply way too many variables.

No, drop in the bucket is 300 like we see in South Korea, a country of 50 million. Even Japan only has 1000 dead and they're a nation of 120 million with a much older population than us (their median age is 9 years above ours). 200k is a full blown disaster.

No, drop in the bucket is 300 like we see in South Korea, a country of 50 million. Even Japan only has 1000 dead and they're a nation of 120 million with a much older population than us (their median age is 9 years above ours). 200k is a full blown disaster.

A total of 32,107 deaths were reported to the city's health department from March 11, when the WHO declared a pandemic, and May 2.

Of these, 24,172 exceeded the baseline. They consisted largely of 18,879 laboratory-confirmed and "probable" coronavirus deaths, leaving 5,293 that still "might have been directly or indirectly attributable to the pandemic," according to the department's report.

You act like you don't know or don't care that NY has 25X Japan deaths that are completely off the books. You also ignore that Japan has less than 1M tests conducted for a country of 126m.

Where are they hiding the bodies? Other nations with restrictive governments and thumbs on media exposure obviously report accurate data. It's the US that's magically showing more deaths in a small county than an entire country of 126 million people, and somehow you think it boils down to masks and gubmint.

There's a reason this discussion is in the political forum instead of the Club. It's all about November. Always has been.

Yes its the "goal" if you should be there in the first place but others were considered in worse shape.
When a decision to bring a person into a specific hospital is made they cannot evaluate every single ER etc... and make the perfect decision on where to take people.
Then people get worse and die, people get worse and should be in the ICU, people get better and leave the ICU and move to another floor. You want to make those decisions doc MC

Just take whatever clip you want from any comment and respond as if that's what was said, but what you said is right there for anyone to see.I'm not in the habit of repeating people's immediately preceding quotes verbatim IRL.
