For the First Time This Century, Child Mortality Is Likely to Rise

For the first time in 25 years, child mortality rates for preventable diseases are projected to increase, after having declined for 25 years.

The new estimate comes from models created by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington and was released for the first time in the Goalkeepers report from the Gates Foundation. It shows that an additional 200,000 children under age five may die this year of a disease that modern medicine can prevent, either with vaccines or other treatments. The deaths can be traced to a number of economic and political factors, the most important of which are significant cuts to spending in global health from the world’s largest donors, including the U.S., according to the report.

“It’s a tragedy that the world is richer, and yet because we have made disproportionate cuts to the money that helps the world’s poorest children, more of them are dying,” says Bill Gates, chair of the Gates Foundation, in an interview with TIME.

Many of the foundation’s programs focus on improving the health of mothers and children around the world in order to reduce childhood mortality, and Gates said earlier in 2025 that he plans to spend the foundation’s remaining funds over the next 20 years. One of his goals is to halve the childhood mortality rate by that time, from the current 4.8 million children under five who die each year to around 2.5 million. But “you can’t cut something in half if it’s going up,” he says.

In the past year, the largest donors to global health have reduced their spending by nearly 27%, and the report estimates that if such reductions continue or even expand to 30%, an additional 16 million more children (or more) will die of preventable causes by 2045.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released Thursday finds that Covid vaccines (https://www.nbcnewyork.com/tag/coronavirus/) continue to protect healthy children from severe illness — a conclusion top federal health officials have questioned in recent months.

From late August 2024 to early September 2025, the vaccines reduced the risk of Covid-related emergency room and urgent care visits by 76% among children ages 9 months to 4 years, and by 56% among children ages 5-17, according to the study.

Triggering sudden deaths in healthy young people was one of the most explosive accusations lodged against COVID vaccines, and one of the hardest to dislodge once it took hold. But a massive new study suggests the reality is exactly the opposite.


The new study, led by Dr. Husam Abdel-Qadir, built on health records from more than 6 million people ages 12 to 50. The researchers started with everyone alive in Ontario on April 1, 2021, then narrowed the group hard. They excluded people older than 50, long-term care residents, and anyone with documented conditions that might predispose them to sudden cardiovascular death or severe COVID outcomes

Among them, the team identified 4,963 deaths meeting their definition of sudden death between April 1, 2021 and June 30, 2023. Most of those deaths (4,448, or nearly 90%) occurred outside the hospital.

Then, the team played a game of statistical matching. For every person who died, they found five living people of the same age and sex, from the same neighborhood, with the same income level. This case-control method ensures you’re comparing apples to apples. You’re comparing a person who died to someone exactly like them who lived, to eliminate the risk of other confounding factors. Then researchers took this dataset and asked one question: Who was vaccinated?

If the vaccines were causing sudden death, you would expect to see a lot more vaccinated people in the “died” group than in the “lived” group. But that’s not what happened.
