I already had covid, sadbert. Like the vast majority of people, I had very minor symptoms.

Vaccine provides a boost to natural immunity, so I'd like to get at least one. I'm not so desperate to line jump or drive to another county (lol Lambert). I'm also not desperate enough to sit at my PC refreshing a browser.

looks like mRNA vaccines protect well against infection. :tu

A new CDC study provides strong evidence that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections in real-world conditions among health care personnel, first responders, and other essential workers. These groups are more likely than the general population to be exposed to the virus because of their occupations.

The study looked at the effectiveness of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections among 3,950 study participants in six states over a 13-week period from December 14, 2020 to March 13, 2021.

Results showed that following the second dose of vaccine (the recommended number of doses), risk of infection was reduced by 90 percent two or more weeks after vaccination. Following a single dose of either vaccine, the participants’ risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 was reduced by 80 percent two or more weeks after vaccination.

Mutations of the coronavirus could render current vaccines ineffective within a year, according to a survey of experts in 28 countries.
Of those surveyed, almost a third gave a time frame of nine months or less.
Fewer than 1 in 8 said they believed that mutations would never render the current vaccines ineffective.

Two-thirds thought that we had "a year or less before the virus mutates to the extent that the majority of first-generation vaccines are rendered ineffective and new or modified vaccines are required."

To be fair, they didn't know Biden would be president and implement the Defense Production Act to speed along vaccine production. Trump certainly wasn't going to do it.

"Pfizer announced Wednesday that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and strongly protective in kids as young as 12,

a step toward possibly beginning shots in this age group before they head back to school in the fall.

Most COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out worldwide are for adults, who are at higher risk from the coronavirus.

Pfizer’s vaccine is authorized for ages 16 and older.

But vaccinating children of all ages will be critical to stopping the pandemic —

and helping schools, at least the upper grades, start to look a little more normal after months of disruption."

Tomorrow I'm free to live my post pandemic life. CDC says 2 weeks post J&J but I added a week for good measure. I'll keep wearing a mask in most public indoor places until every adult who wants the vaccine has an opportunity to get one. So about another 6 weeks I'd guess. Not in purely voluntary places like my gym obviously.

Sorry you're scared to get vaccinated before the little children do but that's your choice. Good luck hiding for another year. This summer you can watch the world go by from behind your window.

Part of the CARES Act was meant for public schools, which in TX schools haven't seen a penny of it.

$18B in the current stimulus act is meant for public schools, which in TX public schools won't see a penny of it.

What shitbag TX Repugs stealing Federal funds from public school exemplifies perfectly why shithole Repug states want Federal Medicare/Medicaid disbursements to the states to be block grants, with no strings attached.

But once Dr. McLellan and his colleagues handed off the 2P spike to vaccine makers, he turned back to the protein for a closer look. If swapping just two prolines improved a vaccine, surely additional tweaks could improve it even more.

“It made sense to try to have a better vaccine,” said Dr. McLellan, who is now an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

In March, he joined forces with two fellow University of Texas biologists, Ilya Finkelstein and Jennifer Maynard. Their three labs created 100 new spikes, each with an altered building block. With funding from the Gates Foundation, they tested each one and then combined the promising changes in new spikes. Eventually, they created a single protein that met their aspirations.

The winner contained the two prolines in the 2P spike, plus four additional prolines found elsewhere in the protein. Dr. McLellan called the new spike HexaPro (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.30.125484v1), in honor of its total of six prolines.

The structure of HexaPro was even more stable than 2P, the team found. It was also resilient, better able to withstand heat and damaging chemicals. Dr. McLellan hoped that its rugged design would make it potent in a vaccine.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/05/health/hexapro-mclellan-vaccine.html

Winehole23
04-06-2021, 09:08 AM
Dr. McLellan also hoped that HexaPro-based vaccines would reach more of the world — especially low- and middle-income countries, which so far have received only a fraction of the total distribution of first-wave vaccines.

“The share of the vaccines they’ve received so far is terrible,” Dr. McLellan said.

To that end, the University of Texas set up a licensing arrangement for HexaPro that allows companies and labs in 80 low- and middle-income countries to use the protein in their vaccines without paying royalties.

Meanwhile, Dr. Innis and his colleagues at PATH were looking for a way to increase the production of Covid-19 vaccines. They wanted a vaccine that less wealthy nations could make on their own.

“We created a center here in Texas to develop vaccines that the big pharma companies are not in a position to make because there's not a financial model for the shareholders,” Dr. Hotez said during a recent episode of the “AMA COVID-19 Update (https://www.ama-assn.org/topics/ama-covid-19-daily-video-updates)” about his 10 years of work with coronaviruses (https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/peter-hotez-md-phd-his-10-years-work-coronavirus). He is the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, and professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

“About 10 years ago, we got connected to a virology group at the New York Blood Center led by Shibo Jiang, MD, PhD, and Lanying Du, PhD, who had a pretty good idea for coronavirus vaccines,” said Dr. Hotez (https://www.ama-assn.org/residents-students/specialty-profiles/what-it-s-be-pediatrician-scientist-shadowing-dr-hotez) who is also co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development with Maria Elena Bottazzi, PhD at the Texas Children’s Hospital. “At the time, interest in coronavirus vaccines was not high. They were sort of orphaned, so we adopted it just like we adopted Chagas disease vaccines and leishmaniasis vaccines.”

“We formed a consortium, together with the Galveston National Laboratory (Kent Tseng, PhD) and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research,” he said.

"A Q. & A. on AstraZeneca

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine has been deployed against Covid-19 in at least 115 countries,

some of them for several months now.

But rare blood clots have led some European nations to rethink its use, limiting the vaccine to older people.

As of Sunday, European regulators had received reports of 222 cases of the rare clotting, out of about 34 million recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The only group for whom British health officials said the risk of the clotting problems outstripped that of coronavirus-related intensive care admissions was people under age 30 living in a place with low rates of virus cases.

Last week, Britain announced that it would offer alternative shots to people under 30."

3. Regeneron says antibody cocktail reduced risk of symptomatic COVID-19

Regeneron announced Monday that its monoclonal antibody cocktail reduced the risk of symptomatic COVID-19 infection by 81 percent in a phase 3 trial.

The trial consisted of 1,505 people who lived in the same household as a person who tested positive for COVID-19 in the previous four days.

Regeneron says it will ask the FDA to expand the emergency use authorization given to the antibody cocktail, which is now used for high-risk people infected with COVID-19.

"These antibodies may be particularly useful in individuals who are not yet vaccinated, and

may also have potential in those who are immunosuppressed and may not respond well to vaccines," Dan H. Barouch, the trial's co-principal investigator, said (https://investor.regeneron.com/news-releases/news-release-details/phase-3-prevention-trial-showed-81-reduced-risk-symptomatic-sars).

When Europeans came to America, the common cold killed many native Americans. Eventually, we all learned to live with it.

This is no different.
Except all those native Americans you just mentioned.

ok. so when there are other diseases not killing ~1000 americans a day, and then there is COVID still killing ~1000 americans a day, does it make sense to treat them the same way right now?

I had a slight fever and some chills for four hours the morning after Pfizer #2. Was a harrowing experience.I woke up with the chills on Moderna #2. My temp had gone down a degree.

Hard to control shivering was my first adverse symptom. A hot shower and pile of blankets took care of that. I went back to bed and woke up with a fever.

(I don't really count the lethargy and drowsiness of day 1 as adverse because I did not suffer thereby, but these are widely reported reactions too.)

No infection, but the wound drains to this day, especially after a workout. I can see it on my gym socks.

Austin Public Health is changing vaccination strategies and piloting walk-up vaccination clinics that do not require an appointment. Residents can arrive at the Delco Activity Center in East Austin without an appointment and register on-site Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23. The clinics will operate from noon until 7:30 p.m., or until vaccines run out....

....APH is also expanding online scheduling. Starting this week, the appointment scheduling system will be open from 7 p.m. on Fridays to 7 a.m. the following Friday and will reopen again at 7 p.m. that evening for appointments for the following week. The 12-hour closure of the scheduling system on Fridays will allow APH to finalize the appointment schedule and update appointment times for the following week.
