Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot vaccine appears to provide more protection against virus variants than the company first reported

Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot COVID-19 vaccine appears to provide more protection against worrisome virus variants than the drug giant initially reported,

according to new trial data released in advance of a Friday advisory panel meeting on whether to recommend the vaccine as the third cleared for emergency use in the US.

Company briefing documents posted on the Food and Drug Administration website Wednesday indicate

the vaccine was 68 percent effective at preventing moderate to severe disease caused by the dominant variant in Brazil and

64 percent effective against the dominant variant in South Africa.

& all it took was for Biden to raise his right hand!

Just shows ta go ya.

What are they doing in India?

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/india/

That country has a population just under 1.4B people. They should be fucked.

Did they have mass distribution of a cheap and effective medicine that works for prophylaxis and as treatment? (Ivermectin?)

How the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Works
(https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/health/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine.html)

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine comes out of decades of research on adenovirus-based vaccines. In July, the first one was approved for general use — a vaccine for Ebola, also made by Johnson & Johnson. The company is also running trials on adenovirus-based vaccines for other diseases, including H.I.V. and Zika. Some other coronavirus vaccines are also based on adenoviruses, such as the one developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/health/oxford-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine.html) using a chimpanzee adenovirus.

Adenovirus-based vaccines for Covid-19 are more rugged than mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. DNA is not as fragile as RNA, and the adenovirus’s tough protein coat helps protect the genetic material inside. As a result, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can be refrigerated for up to three months at 36–46°F (2–8°C).

sounds too good to be true

The basic idea: its much easier to make vaccines against things that are not at all like Eukaryotic cells that make up all of the life we know except for bacteria and viruses (if they are considered alive). Bacteria and viruses are much more likely to have a biochemical makeup very different from us (and about everything else) because they come from completely different cell type the prokaryotic cell and the virus. So its easier to present our immune system with a protein that is very different thus wont attack our own cells. Its much more difficult with the Eukaryotic pathogens like malaria because they are the same type of basic cell, the Eukaryotic cell.

Thus it has been very difficult to find a vaccine for the Eukaryote that causes Malaria, the plasmodium genus. There are other things about its life cycle that make it difficult as well. So I was just happy to read that our new technique might give some hope to rid us of the world's #1 killer.

It's amazing that to distract from his killing Texans via cutting off their electricity by design, he's going to kill more Texans with a deadly disease. The inconvenience to business and the state coffers is reduced, so it nets out on the other side -- if you live long enough to enjoy the other side.

It also helps to be *not poor* and not *nonwhite*. The known disparity of M&M outcomes makes Gov Abbott's consistent policy of lenience the moral equivalent of genocide. It's a very low key, slow motion genocide, and it is tolerated in part because it is known in advance that *some* are better situated to survive than *others*.

The contempt for life and human health has been nothing if not thoroughgoing, it's been a key element of Gov. Abbott's deadly leadership on COVID from the beginning.

Oral COVID treatment yields promising trial data

Pharmaceutical giant Merck and an American laboratory reported promising results Saturday in trials of a drug administered orally to fight COVID-19,

saying it helps reduce patients' viral load.

This drug (https://medicalxpress.com/tags/drug/) caused a significant drop in patients' viral load after five days of treatment with it,

This Phase 2a test—drug trials have three stages before a product can be approved—was carried out among 202 non-hospitalized people with symptoms of COVID-19.

There was no alert in terms of safety, and of four serious adverse events that were reported, none were considered to be related to taking this drug,

2020 US life expectancy for African-Americans slipped 2.7 years, for Hispanic folks, 1.9 years. Essential workers are apparently the most expendable too.

Surgical masks and cloth face coverings stop droplet spray but don’t perform as well (http://doi.org/10.1080/02786826.2020.1862409) in preventing exhalation (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.ppat.1003205) or inhalation of tiny aerosols. They may be fine for a quick trip to the store where shoppers keep six feet apart, but workers who spend many hours in crowded indoor settings, especially settings with inadequate ventilation and jobs that involve being close to other people, need much more protection. And it’s exactly those working conditions that are driving the high rates of Covid-19 among workers in nursing homes, correctional facilities, transportation, food processing, grocery stores and similar jobs involving long hours in poorly ventilated spaces. These jobs are ones in which people of color are over-represented, contributing to elevated risk of Covid-19 disease and death (https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.01.21.21250266) among Blacks, Latinos and other racial and ethnic minorities.

The cases identified above are based on a sampling of SARS-CoV-2-positive specimens and do not represent the total number of B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1 lineage cases that may be circulating in the United States and may not match numbers reported by states, territories, tribes, and local officials. In other words, this is kind of a guess. Other countries are probably better at tracking lineages than we are.

We badly fd up a lot of stuff early.
But later when we started understanding better, and masks were criticized, and being a MAN meant getting and surviving the disease took hold...
The Orange guy felt it and led the charge.
In addition to giving out a cornucopia of horrible voodoo information.
These missteps will go down in history.

And I will state this yet again:
If this disease was contagious and killed far less people, but was still significant in destroying people's faces like small pox,
so many more people, especially young people, would be fighting for masks and vaccinations. This disease would have been treated completely differently with symptoms less severe, but involving disfiguration of the face. The vain orange guy would have been squealing to protect himself.

Can you see Trump with a malformed face coming out and telling people we have rounded the corner? There would be no "I got it, look at me, Im fine" Too bad people cant see their lungs and innards. Out of sight, out of mind.

Pfizer Inc (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/executives-pfizer-moderna-say-they-re-ramping-vaccine-supplies-n1258587) and BioNTech SE said Wednesday that real-world data from Israel suggests that their Covid-19 (https://www.nbcnews.com/health/coronavirus) vaccine is 94 percent effective in preventing asymptomatic infections (https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/asymptomatic-covid-19-cases-may-be-more-common-suspected-n1215481), meaning the vaccine could significantly reduce transmission.

The companies also said the latest analysis of the Israeli data shows the vaccine was 97 percent effective in preventing symptomatic disease, severe disease and death. That is basically in line with the 95 percent efficacy Pfizer and BioNTech reported from the vaccine's late-stage clinical trial in December.

Pfizer has been accused of “bullying” Latin American governments in Covid vaccine negotiations and has asked some countries to put up sovereign assets, such as embassy buildings and military bases, as a guarantee against the cost of any future legal cases, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism can reveal.

In the case of one country, demands made by the pharmaceutical giant led to a three-month delay in a vaccine deal being agreed. For Argentina and Brazil, no national deals were agreed at all. Any hold-up in countries receiving vaccines means more people contracting Covid-19 and potentially dying.

Officials from Argentina and the other Latin American country, which cannot be named as it has signed a confidentiality agreement with Pfizer, said the company’s negotiators demanded additional indemnity against any civil claims citizens might file if they experienced adverse effects after being inoculated. In Argentina and Brazil, Pfizer asked for sovereign assets to be put up as collateral for any future legal costs.

Chinese-Made COVID-19 Vaccines Cause International Concern

In January, Chinese vaccine expert Tao Lina (https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4095622) ringed the alarm on popular social networking site Weibo about Sinopharm's vaccine being the "most unsafe in the world" with 73 side effects.

Pain around the injection area, headache, high blood pressure, loss of vision, loss of taste and incontinence are among the adverse reactions outlined.

As expected, Tao was silenced by Chinese authorities and his Weibo account was deleted.

A survey conducted by the polling company YouGov showed that people across the world are interested in taking a COVID-19 vaccine but would be more distrustful (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-vaccines-attitudes-idUSKBN29K16T) of shots made in China or Russia.

Many Chinese question why China, with its own multiple "qualified vaccines in abundant supply" would import foreign made vaccines.

There is speculation that the German vaccines may have been specifically planned to be administered to Chinese officials and their families.

DRUGMAKERS PROMISE INVESTORS THEY’LL SOON HIKE COVID-19 VACCINE PRICES

Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson pledged affordable vaccines — but only as long as there’s a “pandemic.”

Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer — have quietly touted plans to raise prices on coronavirus vaccines in the near future and

to capitalize on the virus’s lasting presence.

Pharmaceutical officials, ... say they expect the virus will linger, morphing from a pandemic into a perennial endemic.

And as Covid-19 mutations continue to spread and booster shots may be required on a regular basis,

leaders from the three companies are enthusiastic about cashing in.

santizing surfaces and frequent deep cleaning is wasted time and energy

Another lingering concern testifying to the persistent impact of outdated science is that so much of schools’ reopening guidance remains aimed at hygienic measures, surface wipe-downs, and plexiglass barriers, all of which are completely ineffective in limiting what we now know is the primary mode of indoor transmission, airborne aerosols.[xv] (https://www.ineteconomics.org/perspectives/blog/new-cdc-guidelines-to-reopen-schools-could-be-dangerous#_edn15)

I would not say uniformly, sitting adjacent to an infected person seems intuitively more dangerous, but I don't think the modifier undermines his broader point about crowding in badly ventilated rooms.

Contrary to the notion that even 3 feet of distancing is sufficient protection, and 6 feet is overkill, the critical safety issue is that students are all uniformly at risk in poorly ventilated rooms no matter where they are or how they distance. With one infected person in an enclosed and poorly ventilated room, the coronavirus permeates the entire space, putting everyone inside at similar risk regardless of where they sit.

AZ vaccine provides little protection against B 1.351 variant

Between June 24 and November 9, 2020, we enrolled 2026 HIV-negative adults (median age, 30 years); 1010 and 1011 participants received at least one dose of placebo or vaccine, respectively. Both the pseudovirus and the live-virus neutralization assays showed greater resistance to the B.1.351 variant in serum samples obtained from vaccine recipients than in samples from placebo recipients. In the primary end-point analysis, mild-to-moderate Covid-19 developed in 23 of 717 placebo recipients (3.2%) and in 19 of 750 vaccine recipients (2.5%), for an efficacy of 21.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], −49.9 to 59.8). Among the 42 participants with Covid-19, 39 cases (92.9%) were caused by the B.1.351 variant; vaccine efficacy against this variant, analyzed as a secondary end point, was 10.4% (95% CI, −76.8 to 54.8). The incidence of serious adverse events was balanced between the vaccine and placebo groups.

CONCLUSIONS

A two-dose regimen of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine did not show protection against mild-to-moderate Covid-19 due to the B.1.351 variant. The only thing that sucks is that whenever they make design changes to their site, I have to change my script. This has already happened once.

The current site asks you for zip code and distance of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, or 200 miles (lol). Page automatically updates periodically to show new available appointments. If one is found within your selected distance, a new tab opens for completing the appointment. Its pretty nice design actually. I've had my script running for hours on 10 mile distance. No luck yet.
