you have access to all these QBs that are kicking ass, yet somehow David Ash is that starter and Creep McCoy is the backup.
It's painfully retarded
somehow even with all the QB misses we have had we manage to beat you ever year. hasn't tech only beat us once in last 10 tries? makes the retarded comment a bit ironic.

Tech is irrelevant here no double meaning.
UT is loaded at every position but one. If UT had a decent QB they would have been in national title talk for the last couple of years and the next foreseeable few.
And after the QB, subtract the Mack brown coddling out of the equation and UT = Alabama.

That's not possible considering Swoopes was still in high school when Wood transfered. And our staffs judgement of quarterback play is fubar.
Swoops was an early enrollee and was in the spring camp with wood, and he had the better showing of the two.

Who are these QBs you refer to?
We missed on GG, but so did everyone else, he was the #2 ranked QB in his class and had offers from everyone. A miss is a miss but he was supposed to be a can't miss prospect.
You already referred to Connor Wood, but we didn't miss on him, he came, he competed and he didn't make the cut here. I'm glad for him that he is doing well in Colorado, but this isn't a Mack thing or a Greg Davis thing, we had two OC and neither had enough faith in him to give him the offense.
We did miss on Manziel, we picked Woods over him, no denying it, that was a huge mistake.
I would also say it was a big mistake to take Case McCoy, seeing as how his father has been acting while he has been here.
Still you can't say that we missed out on guys like Andrew Luck when he eliminated us pretty quickly in the process.
As of right now I'm pretty happy with our QB situation. Ash is improving, he is light years ahead of where he was as a freshmen and a Soph. He still has all of this year and next to finish his career. Behind him we have Swoops and Heard, both are likely game changers when they are ready to take over.

I'm in minority of Texas fans - I don't think Ash is or will be more than an average D1 starter level, but I hope I'm proven wrong this season. Watching all the games last year teams always stack 8 against the run to force the throw and facing those fronts Ash has not been able to exploit that like an above average QB should. As a true freshman I understand the struggles, but I just didn't see the progress to prove otherwise last year (KU, TCU, OU). Until he can make teams pay for selling out to stopping the run I will not be convinced otherwise.

TCU was particularly awful as he was supposed to be ready by then.
His #'s looked great in the NMSU game, but he made some awful decisions yet again.

Anyone that doesn't see his progress is either too gun shy from the last two years or they don't know squat about football. He was god awful his freshmen year, last year you saw great improvement. Without him we lose our bowl game. This year he has already done something he didn't do very well last year, that is hit the deep ball.
Now I will be the first to say you cannot judge Ash based on beating a team like NMSU as they are worse than our practice squad, but his accuracy is worth noting as he was awful last year in that area.
One other area you need to consider, in the games where Ash looked pretty bad, those were also the games where our oline looked extremely bad. Especially Oklahoma and TCU.

Regarding not knowing squat about football - I played D1 ball, currently coach at clinics (why I sometimes get inside info at recruiting camps), and I've had three other close family members that have played or are being recruited by BCS teams.
Great improvement over "God awful" doesn't mean he's likely to be a great player.
We can all agree the O-Line performed poorly in many games - but the skill positions are loaded making it easy to make a team suffer for overcommitting to the run (as we faced 8 man fronts non stop in every game last season). Is improvement is going 8/16, 63 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs against Kansas and not getting any big plays when your team is loaded with 5* talent against 2* talent? It's a team sport, but an improving player does not do this against such inferior talent.

Some interesting game notes:
* Overstreet should be getting a package of plays against BYU (with wrinkle that he will be threat to throw the ball).
* Major is apparently targeting getting Daje 20 plays for this weekend.
Also heard Jamal Adams just keeps talking about wanting to play in SEC, and on top of that made some comments that playing away from home is a non-issue. Looking more and more like Florida I'm afraid.

I never said he would be great, I do believe he has not hit his ceiling yet. I knew fairly quickly when GG hit his ceiling, same with Chris Simms, same with Colt. With Ash I know as of right now he has not hit his ceiling. I don't discount the Kansas game, but at the same time, that to me stands out as an outlier game more than a step back. Sort of like the game Vince Young had in 2004 against Tech where Chance Mock had to replace him and pull the game out. After that game many called for him to be replaced but the very next game became on of his best.
As for our skill positions, I would agree about the running back position but not the receiver position. Last year our receivers were about as inconsistent as they come. Our best receiver, Mike Davis, is best known for dropping passes, it's pretty obvious that Jaxon Shipley is not Jordan, and I blame the coaches for misusing Goodwin, so I wouldn't be so quick to say our receivers are a loaded position. Now this year looks to be different, but still too early to tell.
I still believe if you were to give Ash Manziel's oline, you would have seen huge strides in his passing. It must be nice having 3 1st round NFL draft picks blocking for you. If we can get some good pass blocking and hit a few long balls you will see the defense back off a bit and huge holes open up for our running game. If they don't, then I look for Ash to have a great year passing the ball and making lots of really big plays.

Isn't Adams related to one of the Florida coaches?
Good to hear about Daje, he is a game changer, especially against BYU, they don't do well in space as they are so slow getting to the ball. He better be ready, because what they lack in foot speed, they will make up for with hard hitting.
Glad to also hear that Overstreet is getting his own package, I love this kid's attitude and the fact that he has earned this playing time.

Great matchup I'll be attending in Aledo Friday night when Johnathan Grays's former high school team of Bearcats takes on Jarrett Stidham's current team in the Stephenville Yellow Jackets. As many of you may already know Stidham's one of the highest rated QB's for 2015 with offers from Texas, A&M, Tech, Baylor, Tennessee and Kentucky. He's currently rated 155th overall in the ESPN Jr. 300. Another name to know is that of Jess Anders who is a '15 RB that I believe was a backup to Gray as a freshman. Anders had a good season last year where he rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 15 TD's. Currently reports no offers that I'm aware of but strongly believe he'll be much more highly recruited as the season goes on. This game will be the epitome of Texas High School Football.

I'm not a paying memeber of InsideTexas, so I think this is public information.
Here's a transcript of a call/interview with Eric Nahlin and La Mirada High School (Cal.) head coach Mike Moschetti regarding '14 TE Tyler Luatua and '15 QB Kevin Dillman.
Me: What’s the latest on Texas and Luatua. He plays two positions of need.
Moschetti: Well I know he got letters last week from the whole coaching staff…
Me: Good, heard anything about a potential visit?
Moschetti: Nothing set up, he likes Texas though.
Me: What about Dillman (Kevin, the 2015 Swedish QB with Ash like physical tools)?
Moschetti: Haven’t heard anything.
[two hour lull in the exchange (we facetime)]
Me: Texas is interested in Dillman, they just want to see more.
Moschetti: I’d have no problem with Dillman visiting if an offer was given or on the way. He got hurt the second series of our first game, tore a ligament in his Toe but played the whole game and struggled. But he’s a warrior (C’mon, coach, he’s a Viking), starting tomorrow. His toe is swollen and black and blue.
Me: Man that type of injury lingers, hard to step, plus he’s mobile so that removes that part of his game.
Moschetti: Yeah, he couldn’t push off of his right foot. Luatuawas out with a hamstring injury, he was begging me to play. It was my decision. Our tackle that’s committed to Cal also got hurt and he’s out this week.
Me: Damn dude, you need to place Dallis Todd (2014 WR committed to OU) in bubble wrap.

Applewhite also decided to shit the bed last night. His play-calling had shades of Greg Davis combined with a level of ineptitude you wouldn't expect from the "future of Texas football." He made a lot of questionable decisions that ended up hurting the Longhorns. Literally. On the first drive, Applewhite decided to use Daje Johnson as the power back on third and short with a between the tackles. Not only did he fail to get the first down, he also left the game with an apparent ankle injury. Applewhite doubled down on stupid decisions later in the game by giving Jalen Overstreet his first real college carry on a big fourth and short. Overstreet lost three yards. So what happened? Did Applewhite seriously think these were good decisions? Was he worried Malcolm Brown would get hurt again? Did Joe Bergeron call him a ginger? You'd think Applewhite would let the designated power running back get the bulk of the carries in, you know, power back situations.

Diaz relieved of duties; Robinson named defensive coordinator
Manny Diaz has been relieved of his duties as Texas defensive coordinator, while former UT co-defensive coordinator Greg Robinson has been named to the position.
Austin -- Manny Diaz has been relieved of his duties as Texas defensive coordinator, and former UT co-defensive coordinator Greg Robinson has been named to the position, head coach Mack Brown announced Sunday. Diaz will be reassigned to a position within the athletics department.
"Our performance on defense last night was unacceptable, and we need to change that," Brown said. "Greg will be here tonight and get with the staff and players to start preparing for Ole Miss. He will be running our defense immediately. We're very fortunate that Greg has been around, watched all of our practice video and has a good scouting report moving forward. His familiarity with the staff and players should make for a smooth transition. He knows this place, did a terrific job in leading our defense before, and I'm excited to have him back on the field. We're back at it and working hard to beat Ole Miss this weekend."
A veteran of 36 years of coaching who has served as a defensive coordinator on two Super Bowl winning teams, and the Longhorns' 2004 Rose Bowl Championship squad, Robinson began a stint as a football analyst with Texas in July.
"This is a tough deal for everyone involved, but I love The University of Texas, and Coach Brown has been wonderful to me," Robinson said. "I'll do anything I can to help him, so when he called, I told him I'd be there today. I know the staff, have a lot of respect for them and am excited for the challenge moving forward.
"I've been around the team a lot, watched all of their film and have been self scouting and scouting opponents since I came on board in July. Because of Longhorn Network, I've also been able to see these guys for two to three years and am very familiar with the personnel."
He most recently served in coaching as the defensive coordinator at Michigan for two seasons (2009-10) after spending four years as the head coach at Syracuse (2005-08).
Robinson was Texas' co-defensive coordinator with Duane Akina, along with being linebackers coach, for the 2004 season, which culminated with an 11-1 record as the Longhorns won their first BCS Bowl and Rose Bowl Championship with a victory over Michigan. That season, Texas held its opponents to 320.1 yards (23rd NCAA) and 17.9 points per game (18th NCAA), while ranking 16th in rushing defense (107.4 ypg).
"I need to get with the staff, work with them to get a plan in place and hit the ground running," Robinson said. "I think very highly of the defensive coaches I'm working with - Duane (Akina), Oscar (Giles) and Bo (Davis) - so it's critical for me to get with them and figure out what specifically we need to do moving forward. Having coached here, I do know the ins and outs and having the stability with the rest of the staff will be very beneficial."
Prior to Texas, Robinson spent 10 of his 14 years coaching in the NFL as a defensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs (2001-03), Denver Broncos (1995-2000) and New York Jets (1994). He was the Jets' defensive line coach for four seasons (1990-93) prior to his appointment as defensive coordinator.
Robinson was the Broncos' defensive coordinator during the organization's back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998. His teams qualified for the playoffs in seven of his 14 seasons in professional football.
Before his NFL career, Robinson spent eight years with the UCLA Bruins, coaching the defensive line for seven seasons (1982-88) and serving as offensive coordinator in 1989. Robinson also had collegiate stints at N.C. State (1980-81), Cal State Fullerton (1977-79) and the University of the Pacific (1975-76).

Robinson stating that they have plans to improve worries me.
Its basics first. You can game plan all day on defense, if your kids have no clue how to tackle, it does not matter. The angles they take, never wrapping up, not knowing how to get off a block... It is fundamentals first.
Thats how serious this situation is. You are trying to teach algebra to kids that can't add or subtract.
For Gods sake take a big step back... And Start OVER.
Now on offense can we address the concept of blocking...
HS coaches at almost any level have got to be appalled at what they are seeing.
You can teach fundamentals though. It's not going to happen overnight, but at least they can improve as the season goes on and maybe salvage a couple of wins that otherwise would have been equally humiliating for Texas as the BYU game was.

I think Gruden would be a fantastic college coach. His name is bandied about every time a big program comes open...None bigger than Texas.
Besides fundamentals, he would be a fucking boss on the recruiting trail. Not only could he continue to lock down top talent in Texas, but could go into Cali/Ohio/Pennsylvania/Georgia/Florida and stand toe to toe with any school out there
Not sure he wants to leave the box, though, but his personality seems well suited to running an entire show.

Gruden hasn't coached at all in 5 years and hasn't been in the college ranks since 1991, where he was a WR coach at Pitt.

Gruden pretty much singlehandedly turned the Raiders from yearly crap into a yearly super bowl contender (who went back to yearly crap after he left), then went to Tampa and won a superbowl. He turned Rich Gannon into an MVP, coached up Brett Favre who won 3 MVPs, and somehow made Brad Johnson look like a very solid QB that won a superbowl. Everything he has had his hands in has always gone well. I think he would do just fine as the coach of Texas.
And any upgrade to Mack Brown means that this team will immediately be winning Big 12 titles left and right. Texas has so much talent every year its ridiculous, but always somehow ends up just short. I don't see Gruden letting that go to waste.

It's been talked about since the BYU game, but OrangeBloods saying DeLoss Dodds will step down at the end of the year.
This is a good sign that Mack won't be here for 2014 and the new AD/coaching search is in full swing.
Early rumors said that Bob Bowlsby was on a shortlist for the next AD. Bowlsby son, Kyle Bowlsby, says that Bob Bowlsby wouldn't take the Texas job. Not sure if the person who claims to be the son, actually is the son. But it sure looks like it.

Bowlsby is the only guy right now that I would want
Michael Jordan.
09-13-2013, 04:29 PM
Between the president and the HC. Mack not being fired obviously but they are formulating a plan for stepping down. He won't be back next year but nothing will be announced until December 8th at the earliest. Wants to finish this year strong for the kids. He has apparently been very emotional this week. Wants the rest of this season to be about the kids.
Bowlsby is the top target. More going on around behind the scenes in the Big 12. OU, KSU, KU and OSU all think he's too close to Texas and not aggressive enough in expansion. Wouldn't be upset if he left for Texas. Texas will make a strong push for Saban, but it will come down to 5 guys after that (right now the list is):
Shaw
Fitzgerald
Strong
Gruden
Franklin
Gary Patterson is not a candidate. Urban Myer is not a candidate. Pete Carrol is not a candidate. Chris Peterson is not a candidate.
"we have to get someone in here that can turn this thing around in a hurry. The concern with Gruden is how long he's been out of coaching. He's still only 50 but that is a concern as well as no college experience. But the interest is there on both sides. If Bowlsby is the guy, he's going to have a little fight on his hands because most people view Shaw as the third guy and the feed back we've got is that he may not be legitimately interested. I personally don't think he's going to leave Stanford unless it's for the NFL. The feeling on Chad Morris is that he might be a little 'rough around the edges for Texas'. But he's a rising star in college football. The list is very fluid right now. Several guys could make the list by mid-season. Many of the decision makers are concerned about having the right offense for Texas. Going to be an interesting couple of months. "

I'm sure most recruits watch MNF. But the fact that they get to play for a guy who coached up Brett Favre and led one of the worst franchises in the NFL to a Superbowl victory will be a much better selling point than going to play for... Mack Brown. lol
When did he coach up Brett Favre? The 1 year he was an offensive assistant or the 2 years he was a WR coach? And that Tampa Bay team was built by Tony Dungy. Oh, and that very same team went 12-20 over the next 2 seasons.
He did do well in Oakland, but let's not pretend like he turned them in to some sort of a powerhouse.
And just for the record, I've wanted Mack Brown gone since 5-7 so don't misconstrue my arguments against Gruden as a desire to keep Mack Brown at Texas.

There are much bigger issues with this program than recruiting right now. You could bring it a class of 15 5* players and they would fuck it up. We have two 5* runningbacks and can't run the ball.

Not sure if it's true or not, but there are a couple of threads on Orangebloods with a few more details regarding the upcoming changes.
The jest of it is that Dodds is retiring on 12/31/13 and Mack will be replaced, if he doesn't voluntarily step down.

Update on 2015 S Larry Pryor of Sulphur Springs who attended OU's game last weekend instead of Texas/Ole Miss (24/7):
“You know, them (Texas) losing games doesn’t really affect me like people would think,” said Pryor. “Like I said before, it doesn’t keep me from liking Texas. They’re facing some problems right now, but I’ll be watching closely to see how exactly they bounce back.”
“I mean anything can happen,” he said. “It’s still early I would say. I have a lot of faith in them to get the job done. The talent is there and they have great coaches. It’s all about making that work and getting going out on the field.”
“I kind of see them turning it around here pretty quickly,” Pryor said. “In my opinion, they just have to pick it up. They have to play a whole game hard. Every snap they need to be going all out.”
“Texas is still my favorite as of right now,” said Pryor. “It’s them, followed by TCU and then schools like Texas Tech and Arkansas. Oklahoma and LSU are in the mix, too. I visited Oklahoma recently and will visit LSU in a few weeks with (2015 five-star defensive tackle) Daylon (Mack)."
“I’ll also be getting down to Texas again soon,” he added. “I just don’t know when yet.”

Quotes from an anonymous source after DE Solomon Thomas visited Texas for the Ole Miss game (24/7). He still plans on taking all official visits after the season, so a new coach may be UT's best chance here:
“The loss wasn’t really a big deal,” the source said. “He enjoyed spending some time with the coaches and especially the other commits. He understands that they’re still trying to figure out some things when it comes to the team, but the night was still a good one for him. He had a good time.”
“Texas is definitely still up there for him,” said the source. “They have a lot to offer, so I know he’ll continue to be high on them. He’s worried about more than just how each team performs this year. There’s a lot more to it than that.”
“Texas A&M isn’t in his favorites right now, but he’s noticed them a little bit lately,” the source said. “It’s possibly they could get in it in the future.”

RB Donald Catalon gives his view on Texas' struggles (24/7). Keep it in mind for later on in the year, but losing Applewhite may affect his recruitment even if he doesn't say it publicly:
“I’m not going anywhere,” said Catalon. “I’m not visiting Oklahoma State at all like I talked about before. I was going to go with Trey (Roberts) since he’s committed there, but decided against it."
“I’m solid to Texas,” he added. “That’s not changing. If I go anywhere, it will just be to watch them for a game.”
“That (losing) doesn’t affect anything,” Catalon said. “I’ll still be committed. They just have to come on with it. It’s going to take work to turn it around, but they can do it.”
“I feel like I can definitely contribute next year,” he said. “I think I can help out with the run game and on special teams to do my part. I’ll help do anything and carry the ball or take some returns back. Whatever they need, I can help.”

“I’ll be coming down there for the Kansas State game,” said Stidham. “I’m excited to head down there this weekend and talk with the coaches. I’m also excited to see the offense live and watch them get a win.”
“I think it’s just a matter of time until they get back to where they want to be,” he said. “I know they're making some changes, but I’m sure it will all work out.”
“They can get it done and I’ll be watching them to see just how they do the entire season,” Stidham said. “How each team like Texas performs for the rest of the year will be big in my recruitment. It will play a factor into it.”
“Recruiting has been going pretty good,” he said. “I’m getting a lot of mail and talking to some new coaches from new schools. Lately schools like Oregon, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Washington State, UCLA, TCU, Vanderbilt and other have been showing interest in me, too."
“I’m wide open though,” Stidham added. “Right now I have no favorites.”

Boyd said the same thing about shutting it down when Oregon offers a while ago during the offseason. It was either on twitter or that "ask.fm" thing people used. I'm not so sure Texas was ever truly his favorite.

I think Boyds recruitment will be entertaining. ESPN reported back in the summer, that Boyd was close to pulling the trigger and commit to Texas back in June.
"It would be exciting (to get an offer), probably emotional," Boyd said. "I wouldn't try to show it, but I'd be happy. I would be overwhelmed. I probably would commit. Right now, I'm just waiting."

Not really surprised that Plattenburg didn't show up at the game. Always thought that if he would visit, it would be with Bonney by his side. But I'm a bit confused that he, apparently, doesn't consider Texas anymore. I thought getting Bonney would help with him.
Btw. How do you guys pronounce Bonney? Like "Bunny" or "Bone-y"? I keep saying "bunny", but I'm not sure how it's actually pronounced.

I'm curious what everyone thinks, so question for the board...if it's determined that Ash is done for the year (or more) because of concussions, how would you handle the QB situation? Roll with Case only and save Swoopes' redshirt? Give Case the starts and mix in Swoopes? Prepare Swoopes for 2014 where he may beat out Ash?

There's no reason why they should burn Swoopes' redshirt. He's not ready, and playing under this fuckstain coaching staff will (I feel pretty definitive in saying this given their track record) fuck him up beyond repair. Keep him on the bench and ride Gray. If we suck worse, so be it.
That being said, be prepared for Swoopes to play in 11 days.

I say mix him in. If you go with Case exclusively, you're basically throwing in the towel. You simply can't afford to do that this year. You have to salvage what you can. If the kid is ready, you have to let him play. What if Ash gets hurt next year and you have an inexperienced Swoopes? Besides, you could use a little separation in years between him and Heard. It's early enough in the year that he can get a good amount of playing time and not really "burn" his redshirt. It would be great to have the luxury to sit him, but at this point, anyone that can play needs to see the field.

redshirts are overrated in this day and age. play swoopes.
if anything, he's an electrifying player that will entice recruits and boosters. i'd think long-term here.

Crazy fact of the day.
Baylor is the first team to open a season with three straight games of 60+ points since 1930 LSU.

This is from the NFL but I'm posting it because I've never seen this type of injury before. Read the first two paragraphs:

I witnessed a similar accident in Denmark on a "rookie day" (a day where fans could try the sport to see if it were something they wanted to play). He got his fingers crushed in a blocking sled. Ambulances came in from everywhere but no one could find his finger.

hah. I wonder how that incident impacted the interest of the fans who showed up.
