Media is really milking this story. It was pretty obvious he was going pro when hired representation and of course when he said he wanted to get out of College Station. I would say Mack would still have a job right now if he had recruited Manziel, but even that is a stretch considering how poorly Mack was coaching the last few years.
A lot of conflicting reports on Henderson out right now. Losing him would be a genuine blow to the 2014 class. Sounds like he could still end up at Texas, but things are extremely shaky right now with his recruitment.

That was CLUTCH!
Thank God. Like I said, that would have been a disaster if he bailed on us. We need him badly.
Thought this was a cool story about Strong:
RC Slocum was on the radio with Dat Nguyen on the San Antonio ESPN station (1250) the other afternoon as I was driving home from work. Among other things, they were talking about the Charlie Strong hire at t.u. Most know he was a Grad Assistant at A&M under Sherrill (Slocum was DCoord) in 1985. Dat asked about what characteristics Strong displayed that set him apart from other GA's. Slocum said we didn't really have them do a lot of "coaching" but what he looked for was that guy who came early, stayed late, and was always looking for something/anything he could do to contribute. He said Charlie was one of those guys.
Then he went on to tell the story of how Charlie got his break to become a real coach on a staff. He said he been good friends with Ray Dorr for a long time and Ray was coach at S. Illinois. RC was talking to Ray and asked if he had any openings on his staff. Ray said he did, but he had it narrowed down to 2 or 3 guys, and he was pretty sure he was going to hire one of them. RC said "I have this guy that's really good, and I promise you, if you interview him, you'll hire him." Dorr told RC that he was comfortable with the 2 or 3 candidates he had, and besides, a small program like S Illinois doesn't have a lot of money to be flying people around for interviews. RC said "Ray, what if I buy him a plane ticket to fly up there and see you. Do you think you could take 20 or 30 minutes to sit down and talk with him?" Dorr said "well, I can't turn down a deal like that!"
Strong flew up to Illinois on RC's dime, and as predicted, got hired into his first ever coaching job.

Quotes from DT Chris Nelson of Lakeland, FL (24/7):
“I reached out to him (Strong),” said Nelson. “I wanted to see what he could do for me so I called Coach Strong and he asked if I would like to follow him to Texas. He wanted to know if my parents thought they would mind that."
“I’m going to talk that over with them later tonight and go from there,” he added. “I like where this is going.”
“He (Strong) offered me right then when I told him I would be interested,” Nelson told Horns247. “I have an offer from Texas now and will be taking an official visit to there later this month, on the 24th.”“I’m ready to go see what Texas has to offer,” he said. “This is something I’m very interested in and I’m very interested in Texas."
“If Texas is as good as everyone says it is, I’m pretty sure I will go ahead and commit to them,” he added. “I’ll switch my commitment.”

A few notes from 24/7...
-Strong met with the remaining Texas coaches today
-Wyatt, Chambers and Giles seem to the be the only coaches that could remain on staff at this point
-Shawn Watson of Louisville may no longer be the leading candidate for offensive coordinator, Strong may now have someone else in mind
-Strong won't fill out his offensive staff until the offensive coordinator is hired
I have got to admit, I was sick of seeing that Garret avatar.

Strange. Though, TFloss, remember Marcus Johnson? He went from Tech, to A&M, to Texas, in ~24-48 hours IIRC.
I can't help but laugh at the Henderson flip flopping. If he weren't a Spring enrolle, I would fully expect him to change his mind 2 or 3 more times.
Fortunately, CS's ties to Florida sounds like they are going to bail us out and we'll at least get some bodies to fill the position which is all we can ask for at this point. DT has been a disaster recruiting wise for Texas the last two seasons now.

Didn't Mack do this when he came on?
and
1) Anyone but Watson. Anyone. I don't want the WCO and I don't want a guy forced to run an offense he doesn't want to. I'm not even sure if that's ever worked out.
2) Not too disappointed about Henderson. Hopefully that DT's Strong's trying to flip from Lousiville commits to us.

Two things stick out to me about Watson: 1) his offense was so terrible in 2009 that he couldn't win a conference championship with a defense that was barely giving up 10 pts a game. 2) he lost to a 5-7 shitshow team QB'd by Garrett Gilbert because his offense was so inept and poorly coached they couldn't keep from making mistake after mistake.
Two seasons playing mostly terrible competition with the best QB in this draft class doesn't erase those things for me. Strong will sign his own coaching death warrant before he ever leads a practice if he brings that guy in here. So many better options it's not even funny. Hopefully he knows this and the talk about Watson has been garbage.

HS kids...
God would I hate dealing with all this crap.
Hopefully we can learn to grow talent like Stanford. Take some kids that are not at their top level as a HS senior and not heavily recruited, but with the mental and physical upside to be very good players by the time they are juniors.
These HS seniors are like 2 year old thoroughbreds. You never know how they are going to develop. Jackson Jeffcoat had a very good senior year at Texas and was the #1 or 2 rated HS player. Now he is rated about 7th best DE going into the NFL draft. I would consider him successful but he clearly got passed by others.

Quote from DT Michael Sawyers of Nashville, TN (Rivals):
"I feel like I could go there and compete for playing time. Everything about Texas would be great, the tradition, all that stuff. I think it's the kind of place you go to for an official visit and fall in love. I'm pretty sure they have a spot for me. Coach (Charlie) Strong is really still looking at the recruits they have and trying to make a decision. But I love Coach Strong and the coaches he's bringing with him from Louisville. I really like them when Louisville was recruiting me - I just didn't like what the school had to offer that much. But that staff was amazing."

three star recruits. texas is not about three star recruits. i'd actually phrase it as: if strong can't keep the blue chips from migrating away from texas (which should be able to recruit itself) then he took the wrong job.

-DT Travonte Valentine of Palm Bay, FL had an official visit to LSU scheduled for the 17th, but has sinced pushed it back to the 24th. He now has the 17th open and is very familiar with Strong and his staff.
-they expect LB Otaro Alaka to ultimately switch his commitement to A&M because he knows their staff well and his sister is currently enrolled there.
-DT Trey Lealaimatafao has a sister at Southern University in Baton Rouge. Because of the family connection, LSU should be a finalist along with Oregon.

I looked at the guys that are already committed to Alabama and those that are considering. The names that stood out to me were DT O.J. Smith of Bossier City, La just from a location standpoint. Then there's DT Matt Elam who is from Elizabethtown, Ky. I know he was considering Alabama strongly along with the University of Kentucky. I'm pretty sure that Coach Strong recruited him and they are familiar by him being from Kentucky. I know he was indecisive at the Army All-America game about his decision and chose to delay his announcement. Quotes from 2015 DT Daylon Mack on the hire of Chris Rumph (Inside Texas):
"Yeah, he is a real cool dude," said Mack. "And WOW, that's a HUGE pickup for Texas. He's a real coach."
"He's the best DLine coach out there. He sends guys to the pros all the time, and he's from Bama. That helps," Mack continued.

All these guys better master the early Mack Brown way of sharing ideas with the HS coaches here.
They better send a competent serious contingent to that before school coaches conference, play a little golf, pat some backs, and give some relevant ideas on producing good FB players on the HS level without being high handed.
We need to turn this HS goal mine back towards staying in state, not going to the SEC. This worries me. John Macovic completely lost recruiting on this level. We need those east Texas stars considering Austin again.

The beauty of this coaching staff is that TX is only a piece of the recruting puzzle. Brown had to rely 99.9% on texas recruits and it appears Strong has assembled guys who can recruit all over the country.

Thats a plus. But not getting the top kids in Texas, especially East Texas, is troubling. We know that some are raised on ATM and we don't have a chance. But the infiltration of Alabama and LSU... That's got to change.

Agree on the first part, completely disagree on the MacII part.
Before Brown came aboard, John Macovich was probably the best recruiter Texas ever had, the year before he was fired his recruiting class had Quintin Jammer, Kasey Hampton, Kwame Cavil, Leonard Davis, Hodges Mitchell, and Shaun Rodgers. That is a pretty damn good recruiting class.
MacII was an arrogant prick to the BMA and that is what ultimately got his ass fired, well that and the fact that he couldn't coach defense to save his life. He preferred wine and cheese over beer and pretzels and that again put a riff between him and the alumni. But as far as relations go with the high schools he wasn't anywhere near as bad as Fred Akers was at treating the high school coaches like crap. Of course he wasn't anywhere close to being as good as Mack Brown was either.

Which is basically what was implied.
No way, no way Macovich recruited well after the beginning. We did not have a good slew of defensive recruits like MackI and JM was a prick to the HS coaches. The guy was completely aloof. He was one guy that was a horrible fit, good offensive coach but horrible fit. He also tried to force feed race relations and made it worse among the players. The kids play a major role in this, he tried to cram guys together that would not like each other no matter what color they were. Clueless about kids.

01-12-2014, 01:49 PM
It should also be noted that some HS coaches completely lose their seniors after the season because they don't give a damn about the kid except being on camera when "their" kid signs. But a significant number keep their kids loyal all the way through and the HS coach actually cares about the kid and his college experience. These are the coaches the recruiters need to have good relations with.

A radio guy from Alabama, Clint Gannon, says that Texas and Alabama are in a bidding war for Ed Orgeron. I guess Alabama wants him as a DL coach and Gannon says that Texas wants him as an assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator. I don't see how it matches up numbers wise. Texas has 6 of it's 9 assistants in place and needs a TE coach (some says Chambers will be retained) a WR coach and QB coach/offensive coordinator. The only way I can see it fits is if the WR coach (Wyatt preferably) and Wickline will share the TE coaching.
I don't know that Gannon guy or his credibility, but thought it was worth posting.

It's all clear now. It has all been smoke and mirrors up to now. It has been an intricate ruse so as to give the power players behind the scenes time to negotiate and finalize the real hire. They are in fact about to reveal that the actual HC of the Texas Longhorns will be none other than THE Nick Saban...
