Art Briles gets his extension:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/11/13/4753784/art-briles-baylor-coach-contract

Does anyone know what his new buyout is? Word is they gave him a huge buyout with this new extension. I will say this, if Briles turned out to be Texas's guy, no amount of buyout would stop Texas from getting him.

Canadian JUCO with four years of eligibility. Is scheduled to visit Texas for the Banquet Weekend.

Texas will need to have their ducks in a row now that Mack has pretty much wrapped up his fate in Austin yesterday. One thing though, UT can't put a Mackovic, Akers, or McWilliams out there next year. There must be a talented YOUNG coach that has great drive and energy (unlike the 2013 edition of Mack). Nick Saban would be the only exception to this, but that might not be realistic. Hopefully the new UT powers that be (Patterson) will not be pulled down into some kind of bureaucratic quagmire in finding the next guy.

I wish Mack Brown well in his future endeavors - he took UT to where it needs to be in his tenure. This job can wear you down over time.

Texas needs a guy that is an offensive innovator, one that runs an offense that scares the rest of the country. A young guy that will be with the program for the next 15 years. A guy that knows Texas high school football and will come in with the respect of the high school coaches. We can hire the best assistants, but we need head man that will always have the offense system in place.

The more I think about it, I'm now convinced Chad Morris is the guy for us. I don't care anymore about getting a guy with head coaching experience, he will come in with the right stuff to take Texas to the next level. He is a fantastic recruiter, he knows Texas high school football, and what he lacks in experience we make up with money to hire the right assistants to move Texas in the right direction.

Vito, I have a lot of respect for your posts and you post some good stuff. I have to disagree here, however. The is THE University of Texas. We need a proven HC. Outside of Saban, I don't know who that is. As a previous poster noted, we do not want to ask Mack to step aside only to hand the reins of the program to another Mackovic, Akers or McWilliams. We don't want to sign the offensive equivalent of Diaz either, a promising star, but one which had not yet been fully vetted. Diaz turned out to be fools gold on the defensive side and that cost us plenty this year (over 500 rushing yds BYU??). The only reason to ask Mack to step aside is if we lasso Saban or another proven, top notch HC out there. The next closest thing could be Briles... IDK. I'm not beating a drum for Mack, I don't think we should have given him the current extension (or at least have an out written into the contract for just such an occasion). But I don't want to go from a 3-4 loss season to a 5-6 loss one. If we need to wait another year for the RIGHT HC, then so be it. It is painful, but if we can't get Saban, who is the only sure-thing out there, then we better be careful who we begin paying a few more $M to.

Sabin is short term.
And he is only loyal to himself.
F him.

I am willing to take some painful seasons in which we play good football and lose in order to establish long term excellence. We should not expect to win a NC every year like Alabama. Ever. This is a freak of a program. Playing good football with high quality players like we did under Royal and Brown would be a joy. Fred Akers gave us a decent stint as well.

Its Austin and UT, there have to be coaches up to the task and salivating. I just don't follow other programs closely enough to know who these types are. But I should think there are numerous people who are up to it. There has to be more than one guy capable given the assets. This should not be a Larry Coker project. Get us on the map and then hand off...

Everything you said is true, but sometimes you just have to roll the dice. The big difference between Diaz and Chad Morris is that Morris has been coaching successfully on the college level since 2010. Diaz had one decent year at MSU and was called the next big thing. The stuff I'm about to quote on Chad Morris comes from his Clemson Bio

In 2010 Tulsa averaged 41.4 points per game, eighth-most in the nation, and scored at least 28 points in 12 of its 13 games. Tulsa was fifth nationally in first downs (25.6) and tied for fifth in touchdowns scored from the red zone (46). His offense scored 64 touchdowns on scrimmage plays (32 rushing, 32 passing). The team totaled 1,006 plays (537 rushes, 469 passes) in 2010.

2011 - Molded Tajh Boyd into a First-Team All-ACC pick who set Tiger records for passing yards and passing touchdowns Led the 2011 Clemson offense to many school records, including total yards per game (440.8) and points (470).

But all the media guide BS aside. The guy can coach the offense, we know this, but he is also a guy that can handle the other things around being a Texas coach. Like the Big Cigars, the LHN, and the most demanding fanbase in all of college football. He lived in Austin for several years, and knows what Austin and UT are all about. He might be an Aggsy but while at Lake Travis he got very close to the Texas coaches and the program.

I posted this on another site

Here is what I think Texas needs to turn things around.

1. A guy that runs a offense that scares the hell out of the rest of the country.
2. A guy that knows Texas high school recruiting and Texas high school coaches
3. A guy that is young enough to give Texas 10 to 15 years of championship level football coaching
4. A guy that knows Texas because he as been around Austin before
5. A guy that brings excitement back to Austin

Believe it or not, only one guy can bring all this.

I am now 100% behind us going out and getting Chad Morris.

1. Put Morris's offense at Texas and with our recruiting and resources his offense would be really really scary to the rest of the country.
2. Who knows Texas high school coaches better than one of their own.
3. He is 45
4. He is from Austin and knows UT as well as any Alumni
5. That offense is right up there with Baylor and Aggsy, he will put butts in seats and recruits will come calling.

He is the only non-head coach I would say is a sure fire can't miss coach. We already know his offense is unstoppable on the college level. The biggest questions are more related to the defensive side and the other aspects of coaching.

Here is what I say

1. Texas has the resources to help him hire the best of the best on the defensive side of the ball. If he chooses to be a CEO on that side of the ball is fine by me, Mack was successful being a CEO on both sides.

2. How will he deal with the politics of big money alumni. Well how did he deal with it at Lake Travis, a school known for the same issues that Texas deals with lots of big money guys wanting to be inside and lots of egos.

3. How will he deal with the pressures of coaching the most demanding school in college football? That is a question for each candidate out there. There is no easy answer for that one.

Unless our next coach is named Nick Saban or Art Briles, I don't think there is a single guy that can do a better job than Chad Morris.

He is now my top choice.

This Jameis Winston's issue brings a unimaginable twist to what I thought was a second coming of Johnny Football. Supposedly his DNA matches the sample found on the accuser's clothes. Now they are investigating her injuries to determine if force was used. He reminds me of Cam Newton according to his charism. Wouldn't imagine that he would be caught up in something like this. Hopefully all of this is false accusations. I know I wouldn't wanna see Florida St/Alabama in the national championship game if Jameis isn't playing, wouldn't be the same. Listening to sports radio and they're saying that John Harbaugh from the ravens is really interested in returning to the college ranks. Currently he is the most attractive coaching option out right now. Supposedly Texas, USC, and Michigan are all interested.

They did mention the connection to Michigan as well, but also said that him and Brady Hoke are really good friends and they doubt that he pursues that job based off of their relationship. USC or Texas are the more realistic destinations.

In an exclusive series of conversations and emails with three independent sources close to the situation, we’ve learned that John Harbaugh is set to be the hottest commodity in the history of college football coaching. Three historical powerhouse programs potentially will be going all out to land the Super Bowl champion coach: Texas, USC and Michigan.

Each source was able to reveal this breaking information exclusively under the condition of anonymity.

“John is ready to move on from the Ravens and lead a college program for the rest of his career, if the right job presents itself,” source #1 told us.

“The NFL is a grinding gig and he has proven that he’s arguably the best coach in the league right now. But, many of his core pieces that have been with him for six or seven years have left the team, and he looks at the college game and looks at the glory and dominance that a coach like Saban or Urban are getting and gets a tad envious.” the source added.

Would be really surprised if USC didn't just go ahead and hire Orgeron. They could do it for cheap, too (3 mil or so). He's a monstrous recruiter and has proven that those kids will play hard for him. Difference between him and Kiffin is night and day. Further, Sumlin's stock has dropped after the LSU beatdown.

I'll be shocked if Muschamp isn't fired. UF has reached historic lows.

Couldn't tell you which job is better, UF or UT. Guess if a gun was put to my head I'd say UT at this point. That UF offense is in shambles

Update on 2015 RB Ronald Jones of McKinney North (OrangeBloods). He will be in town tomorrow and lived in Austin for 11 years before moving. He rushed for 2,406 yards and 39 TDs this season:

"I guess just the speed, the fact that I can take it to the house at any second," Jones said. "I guess they see potential. It's a good feeling when a school like Texas comes knocking on your door."

"I need to get stronger, get better with ball security, switch the ball," Jones said. "And sometimes I'm a little hesitant on my first couple of carries. But that's just nerves. And I want to improve on my pass blocking in certain situations."

"Johnathan Gray is out so I guess I'll be watching Malcolm Brown. I'm looking for a good experience," Jones said. "I'm actually from Austin, but the ironic part is I've never been to a Longhorn game. I just want to see what the atmosphere is like."

"Honestly, I really don't know (of any favorites)," Jones said. "I'm pretty open to my decision. I'm open to anything right now."

I want to take inventory of everyone Texas has lost this season to injuries

Starting right tackle Josh Cochran before the season began.
Starting QB in week 2
Starting OLB in the same game
Starting DT
Starting RB
Starting MLB

Every one of these injuries are season ending and some are likely career ending. I'm proud of how this team has overcome all this adversity to be in the position to play for a conference title.

The liver is in the abdominal cavity. A rib would have to pierce his thoracic cavity via the diaphragm or punch it down to mess with the liver I would think. If this is what happened, the kid is lucky to be alive.

We have word now from two trusted sources that Nick Saban to Texas is a done deal. One of the sources said the money he will get is substantial (obviously) but we haven’t got any word on what that number might be.
UPDATE: for those asking for exact dates on when this is going to happen. We don’t know. We are telling you what we know which is that we have two very good sources that have told us that Nick Saban is going to Texas and one of the sources said that the money is going to be substantial. We would not have run this unless we trusted the sources.
We received word from one source saying it was going to happen and then we contacted a second source asking for confirmation and the second source confirmed. That’s what we know.

NICK SABAN STILL THE GUY- TIMELINES?

McPhaul: I’ve been getting catching grief from some folks for saying 3 weeks ago that “I was 100% convinced that Nick Saban was coming to Texas as Mack Brown’s replacement. Consequently, I have my readers continually asking me, “Darrell, has anything changed this week? What are you hearing from your contacts?” That being said, my first question is “has anything changed since we spoke last week?” Is there any reason why I shouldn’t be telling my readers that Saban to Texas is 100%.

Friend of Bevo: Not a thing has changed. Everything is moving forward accordingly. I told you previously that we would be nice and perform a “professional courtesy” in vetting candidates that were of Mack’s liking. I know you heard me because I read your “Thanksgiving Crossfire” and you put it in there. I also told you that we would extend that “professional courtesy” to make him feel good about things but at the end of the day he would have little if any impact on the decision making process. That is just how it is at this point. The decision makers feel like he put this thing in the ditch, and after 4 years he still doesn’t know how to get it out. We’re going in a completely different direction- that ship has sailed.

McPhaul: Alright, I’m going to jump to the next question that everyone has wanted to know about since Chris Davis returned that attempted Field Goal back 109 yards (yes I know it can only be 100 yards in College) for a TD to win the game for Auburn. With Alabama for the time-being being on the outside looking in on the National Championship game, does this impact the Saban hiring time-line?

Friend of Bevo: Did Auburn beating Alabama impact Nick Saban’s time-line on coming to Texas? Is that your question? Son, you know the answer to this already: “Hell yeah it impacted the time-line. It expedited it!” Now we don’t have to continue with these charades and “cloak and dagger” games. We can go thru our process on our agreed-to terms (between Sexton, Saban, & UT decision makers). This allows Saban the ability to come in and get started at his new gig as opposed to having to worry about an SEC Championship & BCS Championship game.

As for these rumors, I still haven't seen anything from anyone credible. The Alabama staff is out recruiting hardcore right now, particularly in-state targets that Auburn either leads for or has committed. Alabama people (that I know) continue to be confident, and they're grads not t-shirters. All of this shit is originating from UT "sources" or "somebody who knows somebody" type bullshit. If you think people won't float this kind of stuff to get clicks/traffic, you're incredibly naive.

However, if he were to leave in the next few weeks it would be the ultimate win for Auburn. Satan gets embarrassed in the Iron Bowl, tucks his tail between his legs, and scurries off to Austin. The meltdown in T-Town would be nuclear, a blast of the fusion variety, tbh. It would also DEFINITELY swing a couple more big-time (Rivals100/250) recruits toward the Plains. Either way, I'm confident about Auburn's future. also, here is the stuff from jesus shuttlesworth's insidetexas chat last night, some guy linked it, and I'm not a member there, so I really don't care about posting it

Jesus Shuttlesworth: I think Mack announces before banquet and Saban comes in that weekend
Jesus Shuttlesworth: The crazy part is Saban will bring recruits with him it sounds like.
zzzizzzy: assistants have been asked to keep quiet w their future plans until mack announces.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: zzzz, is right about that. Expect announcements or breaking news from IT next Sunday
Jesus Shuttlesworth: huntsville, I will never do percentages again, but I'm confident
zzizzzy: saban still 100%
Jesus Shuttlesworth: chancellor at bama says saban to texas. That's the big news
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Some Bama commits may follow Saban to Texas. two or three five stars
zzzizzzy: assistants have literally been begged to remain quiet on their future plans until after Mack announces
zzizzzy: no obligation to keep quiet, but if they want other jobs, they respect the chain of command

Robert Witt, Bama Chancellor, was Dean of UT Business School, and President of UT-Arlington.

Saban NOT coaching bowl game. period.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Nobis, Narduzzi and the Nussmeyer I would think (Possible staff)

lamar littrell: regarding current AD personnel/coaches vis a vis Patterson...think Jim McKay' Munich coverage - "They're all gone...

Jesus Shuttlesworth: jark, the whole thing gets blown up. Suddes will be the only survivor. BTW, did anyone notice the latest Texas offer and who broke it? Guess who and guess why

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Robert Witt chancellor at bama, Red McCombs, Pat Frost, Bart Koontz, Bob Rowling, austin realtor, UTPD, an interior decorator in Austin, have all said Saban was coming to Texas among others. It's why we've been confident

zzzizzzy: suddes was suggested for his position back when we were almost certain saban was coming. mack unwittingly said ok. js may not agree with me on this, but it is a fact and one of the reasons ive been so certain of saban's coming

And our tipster continues with further revelations:

"On a similar note I have had two friends (both Aggies, so they aren't being Texas homers) tell me about similar "Saban is a done deal" rumors. One sat in a Texas boosters box for the Tech game and was told by that booster that "Saban deal has been done for 8 weeks." I don't think it is done but he seemed fairly confident that Saban will be at Texas next year. I don't want to give the boosters name but if you need it to confirm how involved he is at Texas then I will provided it as long as you don't use it publicly. My other buddy works for a news station somewhere in the state of Texas( I will not provide his name) but he spoke with a very influential booster from a different school in Texas. This booster told him about some other coaching deals (briles, sumlin, etc) about a month before the story broke so he is beginning to listen to the rumors that this booster tells him. The booster is involved in Texas politics as well so he has a good hear for what is going on at the major schools in Texas. He told my friend "As much as it saddens me to say this, Saban to Texas has been done for a long time". I know you probably get several rumor emails like this but I thought it is still of some interest to you."

Football is and always be king here in texas, but damn there are so many great high school basketball players who must leave the state of texas to get national appeal. First post on here, long time reader...here's a free article on Orangebloods about the Saban rumors:

As I have reported, there will be a meeting after the Baylor game involving
Texas president Bill Powers, new athletic director Steve Patterson and Mack Brown (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/viewcoach.asp?Coach=64) in which they will discuss things
and see if everyone is on the same page.

As I have previously stated, I
think there will be a mutual parting of ways at that time.

Big 12 title this weekend.

It's becoming clear, however, the lack of such
a meeting up to this point has agitated Mack Brown as expressed on LHN during
the Texas Tech post-game show:

"What I've said every time I've been asked
is I'd like to meet the new athletic director (Steve Patterson) and be able to
sit down and say, 'Hi, I'm Mack Brown. How are you? Let's talk about our future
together.'

"Instead of putting him on the spot with me saying what he's
going to do or what he's not going to do.

"And he's been great. He met
our staff yesterday morning and got to visit with us for the first time. It's
the second time I've talked to him with 17 of my best friends standing there.

"So as soon as we get through with Baylor, I'll be excited to sit down
with Steve and talk to him about the future of Texas football and where we're
going."

Mack has had to answer constant questions from recruits, whom he
has told he plans to be back in 2014 with a roster that can win a championship.
The families of all of the football staff members at Texas are hoping Mack still
has the political capital to call his own shot.

But Mack has to know the
signals aren't good. No current coaches or athletic department staff were
consulted in the hiring of Steve Patterson. And there have been no emphatic
statements of Brown's return from Powers or Patterson. Both Powers and Patterson
have turned down interview requests lately.

If Texas beats Baylor and
Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, earning the Longhorns the outright Big 12 title
and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl, Mack could call on his good friend/lawyer/UT
booster Joe Jamail and try to challenge any movement in the direction of a new
football coach.

Or Brown could walk out on a high, take his $2.75 million
buyout and ride off into television or see if he's offered another coaching
job.

A Texas regent and former regent have made it clear there's an
interest in Nick Saban if and when Brown moved on.

Before the phone
conversation last January involving the UT regent (Wallace Hall) and former
regent (Tom Hicks) with Saban's agent, some key UT boosters gauged the interest
of Saban when Brown went 5-7 in 2010.

So there has basically been an
on-again, off-again back-and-forth between the Texas camp and Saban camp for
three years.

But the price would have to be right for Texas. UT would be
very hesitant to set some ridiculous new bar for college coaching salaries that
would change the industry scale forever - Nick Saban or not. I was told the
conversation last year involved a $7 million annual salary.

Even while
enough conversations may have taken place over the past three years that a deal
could be struck quickly, I'm told no deal has yet been struck.

I've also
been told nothing is done with Nick Saban until he's wearing the logo of any
potential suitor.

If Saban were to leave Alabama, it would be more about
history than money (although the money would set a record). It would be the
chance to win a national title at a third school - something that's never been
done.

Saban has repeatedly said he's too old to start over somewhere
else. Terry Saban, his wife, said in the Wall Street Journal last week the
Sabans will end Nick's coaching career in Tuscaloosa. But Terry Saban also made
it clear there were concerns about if Tide fans still appreciated the success
the Sabans have brought to Bama or if those expectations were now too
unrealistic.

A ton of details between Texas' camp and Saban's camp over
the past few years may have already been discussed and perhaps even agreed upon
in principle.

But I'm told Patterson, who has negotiated a ton of big
contracts as a former president and GM of the Portland Trail Blazers, has not
engaged in any conversations with agents or potential replacements for Mack -
and wouldn't - until after meeting with Mack and Powers following the Baylor
game.

There could be a lot of fast-paced movement after Saturday's game.
Until then, the rumors and speculation will undoubtedly build to out-of-control
levels.

Interesting article (http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/texas-longhorns/20121016-see-mack-brown-s-buyout-figures-at-texas-through-2020.ece) on Mack's buyout #s. Seems pretty cheap compared to what is owed on the contracts: $3.5M if bought out before Dec 31. $2.75M after Jan 1st, 2014 and $2.25M after Jan 1, 2015.

I still wouldn't mind Harbaugh. What a great story that would be, Harbaugh fighting for his 1st Texas Championship vs Saban going for his 3rd or 4th Bama one...

If the Saban thing falls apart, don't be surprised if Gus M is one of the guys interviewed for the Texas job.

The guys I'm hoping we go after are (besides Saban):

1. John Harbaugh Already expressed interest in coming back to the college game.
2. Sean Payton - brightest young coach in all of football
3. Chad Morris - Too many positives to not go after him
4. Gus Mazatlan - His style fits in well with the Big 12
5. Brian Kelly - He would kill with the talent Texas brings in.

There are a few others but those are my favorites.

Why don't you go ahead and throw the Hoodie on that wish list.

Hell if we are willing to pay up to 10 million a year for a coach, I'd add bill belichick to that list.

I don't buy the Saban talk. UT Athletics as an institution is too in love with Mack to let him go this year.

Please post anything written by me that qualifies me having a hard on for Mack Brown. I'll wait.

And while I'm waiting, I'll continue to laugh at foolish assholes who believe the shit they read on subscription sites. Those fuckers know as much as you and I. Nothing. All I know is that piece of shit could win the Big 12. Do you really believe in your feeble mind that if he does, they'll fire him? Are you that much of an idiot? Even if he loses to Baylor there's a significant chance that he retains his job. Who's going to fire him? He's entrenched. He has the backing of the big donors with acutal power. Not these new money pussies who think they can facilitate change. If he steps down, it will be because he wants to. What is so hard to understand about this? He's a power hungry, egomaniacal douchebag who won't quit. You really think some pussy from Arizona State is going to fire him without the say-so from the mega-donors? And even if Mack steps down, the University of Texas isn't paying $10 million a year plus 1% of the LHN to Nick Saban. That's got to be the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

No. He's gone. Where there's smoke, there's fire. whether or not they get Saban remains to be seen. But Mack is gone. It's just a matter of how high or how low of a note he leaves on at this point. I'm sure everyone would prefer a high note.
