AD Steve Patterson says that he plans to have a new coach in place no later than Jan.15th. The 15th ends the dead period for recruiting and he feels that its important for the new coach to begin targeting recruits and developing relationships at that point.
How nice would it have been to have a high schooler (Bryce Dixon) at TE last night than whoever we had.

I wanted to apologize for the lack of posts the past few weeks. Not only has there not been much going on, but I've tried to step away from the boards since it's mostly just annoying conjecture on the coaching search. Anyway, hope y'all had a nice Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) and have a safe night this evening. Hopefully the new era will start next week and we'll have a lot to talk about.

Anyone from the staff going to be retained after this season? Are we still waiting till jan 1 to hear more coaching rumors?
hopefully we keep robinson
Not a coach, but Suddes should be retained.
Only coach I can see getting serious consideration is Wyatt and an outside chance for Davis and Porter.

One would hope the new coach and his staff would be in place a week before that date.
They will have a lot of film to review and will need to get their recruiting plan together so they can go all-out when the dead period expires.

Some notes posted by Inside Texas yesterday...
-QB David Ash's concussion symptoms are finally gone. He has been throwing with the elder Shipley and plans on being ready for spring ball.
-the search committee has yet to officially meet and probably won't before a new coach is hired. This is solely Patterson's baby and a good reason why we've seen so many different baseless coaching rumors; nobody truly knows what's going on. With that said, don't expect arguably the biggest decision of Patterson's career to result in a name like Fedora of North Carolina.
-Mack and President Powers are currently not speaking. Factor in Mack trying to re-negotiate his buyout agreement plus leaking details to the media, and it's made things quite awkward. Luckily, it's benefited the coaching search because it's keeping Mack at a distance and Patterson has been given full autonomy to go get his guy. It also helps with any potential coaching candidate knowing that Mack won't be around peering over his shoulder at all times.
-speaking of Mack's buyout agreement, those details are supposed to be finalized starting today and are expected to be done swiftly. The main issue to be resolved is UT releasing itself from any liability as it pertains to Mack. His new role shouldn't be anything more than fundraising figurehead and Powers apparently now understands this is the way it has to be going forward if the football team is ever going to get back on track.
-the current #1 candidate is supposed to be formally offered this week, but no word if it will be done publicly for all of us to see. I'd say doubtful. One of Patterson's main goals with the new coaching hire is to change how the college football world is viewed (Big XII vs. SEC) in the eyes of recruits. The big money donors have also voiced this issue as one of their major concerns for the future.

Would Wyatt stay as the OC?
I wish I could give you a straight answer as it will depend on the offensive philosophy of the new coach and if the new coach already has an OC in mind. Keeping Wyatt around could be difficult if he's not given at least the title of co-offensive coordinator. We've already seen his name linked to some other OC jobs like North Carolina. My opinion is there is enough evidence of him as a proven recruiter and playcaller that he should at least receive an interview to remain on staff. I know 24/7 has mentioned that he would like to stay at Texas if he had his choice.

Notes from 24/7 as of this morning...
-they believe Jimbo Fisher signing an extension does not at all mean he's out of the picture for Texas and UT will continue to pursue.
-Patterson met with several former, big-name UT players (Eric Metcalf, Kasey Studdard, David Thomas) yesterday at the Hyatt in downtown San Antonio to discuss the coaching hire. The group's main concerns were getting someone on board who understands the tradition of the Texas program, someone who can relay the importance of academics (especially players coming back to finish degrees) and someone who flat-out wins games by building a solid program and maintaining that level of excellence.
-even though coaching candidates weren't discussed at length, the two names mentioned by the group were Jimbo Fisher and Art Briles.
-it is said that the former players were pleased with Patterson as the new AD because he's a UT guy and understands what it's like to be on campus and immersed in the culture. The players felt like they were genuinely heard, Patterson is "one of us" and "he gets it."

Update on DE Derick Roberson of San Antonio Brennan (24/7):
“I'm cool with them right now,” Roberson said of where his commitment to Texas stands. “I'm still committed to Texas, but I'm just waiting to see what happens with the coaching stuff before I take any other visits or move on.”
“No,” Roberson said. “I'd stick with Texas (and wouldn't de-commit before the new coach is hired.)"
“Texas has been my No. 1 school since I was little,” Roberson said. “I've had a couple of cousins play for Texas. Texas is home.”
“Oregon got in contact with me,” Roberson said. “Texas A&M is still offering me. OU is still coming after me. Alabama, USC and all of them.”
“Probably most likely Oregon,” said Roberson, who mentioned Alabama and Texas A&M as possible visit destinations. “I hear the university is real nice. They're one of the top ten in the country.”
“He's (Oscar Giles) stayed producing top-notch, NFL draft picks at defensive end,” Roberson said. “[Jeffcoat] just won a bunch of awards. If he's there, I'm there.”

The one thing I do believe in all this is that Texas is under a lot of pressure to hire a big splash name to take over the program. Someone that will turn the tide of recruit propaganda away from the belief that the SEC is better than the Big 12. This is why I still think the name will come from outside the Big 12 conference but will be someone that has close recruiting ties to Texas high school football.

I wonder how that works. Do the big pockets just make a check out to the other university themselves? Do they get Texas to pay the fee and then do a donation to Texas as a reimbursement? Or do they cut a check to the coach himself so then it looks like the coach is buying out his contract? I would think the latter would be the cleanest way to go, it minimizes the chance for litigation I would think.

It doesn't matter if he was recruited or not. If he would have come he would have probably sucked because Texas has a problem with developing QB's. Then on top of that, they lack the ability to successfully evaluate talent.

I will disagree with the developing QB's part, because we are formulating that theory around Case McCoy. There haven't been any quarterbacks to develop. Which leads us to the lack of successfully evaluating talent.

Well for me.. Case of course isn't very good. He may be the only QB from the past few years to actually reach his ceiling. To me, Ash was never polished, he just always had the most potential to be. He was better than the rest but that isn't saying much. I never had confidence in him. And then once sorry ass Gilbert left for SMU and started lighting it up that's when I turned to the development of the quarterbacks and declared it shitty. The talent evaluations don't need explaining we hear and see about that on a daily.

Gilbert started playing well? I used to check his stats every once in a while and he never seemed to play any better. Even if he did, you have to question the competition he faced in the B12 compared to the AA. I wouldn't say we were unable to develop quarterbacks, but it's pretty clear that we've whiffed on talent since Colt left.

Strong is much more of a gamble than some of the other names passed around.
But he fits the profile for success.
1. Great recruiter
2. defensive minded
3. history of coaching up talent
4. high graduation rate for his players
5. players love him
The big questions left are what will he do for an OC, sounds like Ed Ogeron is coming in to be the DC.
I hope he keeps Wyatt, Porter, Bo Davis, and Giles. Also hope he promotes Shipley to an assistant coach.

The only thing I don't like about the hire is that I personally was hoping for a guy with a strong offense, it's a lot more difficult to keep replacing a good OC than it is to replace a good DC. Everytime you replace an OC you change the offense for the players.

I leave this place for a couple years and come back to Michael Jordan being a dumb ass ignorant, arrogant prick. Weirdness
Considering Saban, Harbaugh, and Fisher almost certainly said no, and with good reason, I'm glad Strong is looking like the pickup. Very good football coach who promotes a tough as nails football culture. That's what we needed to shake this greed fueled "we are the Joneses" bullshit attitude. Let's stop being delusional, soft, arrogant bitches and start being hard nosed and tough again.

strong would be just a center piece on the coaching staff. i doubt he'll have exclusive control as to who his assistants are.
Good lord I want Lorenzo Carter looks like he has 2 visits open, I sure do wish Texas could be one of them. Same for Rashaan Evans.
If he can land one or 2 of those 4 and 5 star guys, I'm one happy camper.
I'm hoping Solomon Thomas gives us a second look now that we have a head coach and now that Ohio State lost its bowl game too.

There is a lot of ground to make up with Thomas, I doubt he gives us a second look. I pointed out Lorenzo Carter because Texas was recruiting him and he has a relationship already with Strong. Should give enough punch to at lease get a visit. Anything is possible after that.

I really hope he keeps a few of our our current staff, I personally would keep Wyatt, Porter, Giles and Davis, maybe Akina. He is a defensive coach so I'm sure whoever he gets as DC will be pretty good. We need a new QB coach, and OC for sure. Right now, my vote would be for either Mike Shanahan if he doesn't get a head coaching gig, or Lane Kiffin who I know won't get a head coaching gig.

According to Twitter, Strong has informed his staff that no decision has been made yet. Apparently Strong wants DL coach Clint Hurtt with him. Texas isn't interested in him.

The fuck is wrong with Texas? If you're gonna hire a guy its probably not the best move to micro manage the very first fucking thing he does in bringing in a new coaching staff. Let him get who he wants.

Apparently it has something to do with a "ShowCause" regarding Hurtt, which I don't know what is.

I didn't know either so I looked it up:

Apparently from his days at Miami:

Saw it earlier and didn't remember who posted it. I just when back and looked at it, Bruce Feldman from CBSSports was the guy who reported it.

Maybe we can have the 1st black coach win a div I championship...
But again, I would like the first year goal to be tackling. Give me some basic stuff that makes Texas football fun to watch again. Next, a QB that is a division I athlete with a division I arm, starter and backup. I don't think I am asking too much.

I'm like y'all in the sense that I woke up this morning and have spent most of my time trying to figure WTF is going on with this Strong deal. I've seen some theories, so I'd figure I'd put down a summary for everyone.
-one theory is the Louisville AD (Jurich) never gave permission to Patterson to interview Strong. Because Jurich is currently in Colorado on vacation, he's trying to get back to Louisville for a meeting. Bad weather in Colorado is causing a delay. 24/7 calls bullshit on this and thinks there is a more serious issue holding up the deal. It's also possible Jurich will match Texas' offer.
-another theory is the deal isn't close to complete and an official offer may not be on the table yet. Many of you may know Louisville's defensive coordinator, Vance Bedford, as he played for Texas in his college years. It's possible that his party leaked details to the media before anything was set in stone and that's why we're seeing all of the confusion this morning. The reality may be we're just in the beginning stages and not at the finish line.
-it's possible that Patterson and the search firm dropped the ball and didn't properly vet Strong. 24/7 claiming these guys have been a horrible disaster.
1.) Strong's buyout is anywhere from $4 million to $5.3 million. Rumors say that Patterson went against the input from big money guys by hiring Strong. They were in favor of Saban, Fisher and Briles. Because of this, the buyout could be a big hang-up as Strong may not have sufficient support to make the transition to Austin. Keep in mind he pulled out of the Tennessee job last year after having a contract offer.
2.) Another potential issue is Clint Hurtt, Louisville's defensive line coach, who has an NCAA show cause until Spring 2014 because he was involved in the Miami scandal. For those unaware, a show cause is a penalty brought forth by the NCAA where a proven cheater or violator of NCAA rules has to serve a suspension and cannot coach for a certain amount of time. The rule carries over should that coach be hired by another school. It also has to be approved by the NCAA. Strong may be insisting that Hurtt come with him to Texas.

One more thing I forgot to mention is supposedly Strong represents himself and has no agent.
I imagine that's not helping the matter if true.

I'm again back to just letting this play itself out. The big money guys wanted saban, fisher or Briles, also throw in Gruden. But none of them wanted Texas.
If our AD screws this up, I say we just go out and get Bobby Patrino, he would still be a slam dunk hire, hell probably better than Strong.

24/7 saying assistant coaching names are already starting to materialize.
Good bets for at least two big-name, non-coordinators and one Texas staff member should remain.

Vito-
Can't comment on Saban and Fisher, but 24/7 said the other day the reason Briles fell through is because he wanted the job on the spot. He didn't want to have to go through the entire interview process and Patterson was uncomfortable with that. I doubt we ever know who officially told Texas "no" and who Texas never had genuine interest in.
