So Sumlin offered the kid then pulled it away? Surely Strong can use for a little negative recruiting fuel you would think

I guess it's a result of trying to keep Nixon happy and they already have two 2015s in Anderson/Bradford.

@DamonSayles: 4-star RB/FB Daniel Gresham (@DanielGresham33) is now down to #PonyUp & #BirdsUp. A decision will come Sunday.

I know many folks don't care to hear updates on Gresham but I find it extremely odd that he went from being committed to Texas to know having to decide between SMU and UTSA. Very odd recruitment to say the least.

How ironic that he messed with UT, commited to go home to Louisville, UT took his coach and then Strong didn't want him at Texas.

What a crazy way it all worked out for him, but I'm glad he'll find a home and probably play a lot.

The football aspect aside, how could that even be a choice? UTSA is a cheap commuter school, while SMU has history, and is a hell of a school to get degree from. Just the contacts he will make will give him such a leg up for the rest of his life. I have nothing against UTSA, my wife teaches there, but no way I'd pick UTSA over SMU.

I really do wish him well but just goes to show that sometimes handling your recruitment as professional and as honest as possible is always the best way to go. In this case it appears that playing the game backfired on him. Circumstances such as these is why I respect the way certain prospects such as our Jerrod Heard, LSU's Jamal Adams and Solomon Thomas handled their recruitment. They were as high level a prospect as one could be but they never led schools on and consistently managed themselves well. Surely there are other recruits who did just as well but those are the recent ones who come to mind.

But a hell of a degree? Compared to what? UTSA?

It's a tier two school, same as ags, Baylor and TCU, but the connections when you graduate are what make it so valuable. The same can be said for Texas, atm, and Rice. Again, comparing it to UTSA, there is no comparison.

The unidentified in-state lineman (different from the under-the-radar juco lineman) was identified. It's Elijah Rodriguez.

Also, 2015 S Larry Pryor committed to A&M.

Finally, Arkansas' 247 page says DE Solomon Thomas will sign with them over Stanford. In response, David Shaw said, "Are you motherfuckers sure this kid was smart enough to get in to Stanford?"

Lakeland Victory Christian defensive tackle Chris Nelson said something on Thursday night during a phone interview that could very well have been foresight into his college football future.
The 6-foot-2, 295-pound lineman, who was committed to Louisville before head coach Charlie Strong pulled up stakes and bolted for Texas, says he is down to Texas, UCF (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/ucf-knights-ORSPT000222.topic) and USF (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/south-florida-bulls-ORSPT000000286.topic) as his final three choices.
When asked to put into his own words what type of player one of those three schools would be getting Wednesday, National Signing Day, Nelson said, "The kind of player who is a motivator. I like to bring a lot of energy to the players around me and I also like to bring that Florida swag."

There wouldn't be much reason to bring Florida swag to an in-state school. Nelson, however, laughed at the suggestion that his comment sounded like he was leaning toward Texas.

"Nah man, it's not like that," he said.

He visited Texas this past weekend and had a great time in Austin. Nelson is one of few Louisville decommits who Strong has actually chased since leaving for the Longhorn State.
"They showed me a lot of love ... made me feel at home," Nelson said.
In return perhaps he'll eventually be showing his "Florida swag."

There was so much rejoicing when Mack "stepped down" that this didn't garner the attention it deserved. John Bonney spoke with the ABC affiliate in Houston recently and said, "I was at my official visit when Mack Brown resigned and he told us to go look around. He'll even, you know, talk to other coaches for you and everything."

At the time, 247 wrote this: "Mack Brown has told recruits their scholarships will still be honored. However, if they want to look around he will help them." (http://texas.247sports.com/Article/Mack-Brown-has-resigned-as-the-head-football-coach-at-Texas-166234)

The pro-Mack crowd will argue that he was just looking out for the "kids." But I have to wonder how our recruiting class would have been affected if he had instead said something like, "You didn't commit to me; you committed to the University of Texas."

LOL because you are acting like you were right, when you were full of shit. I'm sure it completely caught you be surprise that SMU was ranked higher than A&M. I'm sure you think changing the argument will some how make you look smarter, but you are still a fool.

Your grasping at the whole tier II thing, well guess what, when US News used their tier ranking they assigned the top 50 schools in the nation as tier I and the next 50 as tier II, so in fact since SMU is ranked 60 and Aggies are ranked 79 that means that according to US News ranking they would still be considered tier II schools.

The only ranking that would put A&M as a tier I is if you look at ranking for research institutions, they rightfully have A&M as a a top tier research school and SMU as a tier II, but since we are talking about undergraduate school it has no bearing on this argument.

This whole argument started because I said SMU was on the same level as A&M you disagreed and I showed you where they are ranked ahead of A&M, now you think you can change the argument, well guess what idiot, your still stupid and I'm tired of making you look bad, because it's just too easy.

Now go back to your tier III tech buddies and finish your tech is better than UTSA circle jerk.

Damarkus Lodge plays for Coach Mcguire as a 2015 WR for the Cedar Hill Longhorns. Lodge is ranked 44th overall in the ESPN Jr. 300. Was thought to be a Texas Longhorns lean for awhile but recently put out an early Top 10 excluding the 'Horns likely because of the departure of Mack Brown and his unfamiliarity with the new staff. I imagine he will take his time with his recruitment and am hopeful that this buys Texas time to regain his interests.

- DT Poona Ford looks to be down to Texas and Missouri. With Texas holding the edge.

- DT Chris Nelson seems to be a UCF and Texas battle. 50/50 at the moment.

- CB Arrion Springs enjoyed his visit, but don't expect him to flip.

So NISD locally has 2 five team divisions.

Does this change their playoff allotment?

The UIL has already allowed too many teams in the playoffs. Division I and II within each A grouping, its as bad as the NBA letting 16 teams into the playoffs imo. They will probably end up having the I and II winners play each other.

I think for a lot of them it's for security. By committing early they lock in their spot at the school they think they want and still can keep options open to see how things go. For the recruit (especially the top couple hundered in the nation) there is no downside to committing early but you get the insurance that most schools will honor your scholarship even if you get injured your senior year.

since it's a full ride, I'm guessing it's just a classy move and not some kind of ncaa rule.

It's not an NCAA rule but it's something that most programs do as a sign of goodwill because that guy only counts toward the scholarship limit the first year. After that he goes on full medical and it doesn't impact the football program at all. To coaches that's a very small price to pay for goodwill toward the HS coaches and to avoid the reputation that they'll turn their back on you if you get hurt.

This also isn't just for career ending injuries. Say a guy is committed to a school before his senior season then tears an ACL. The chances are much greater that the school will honor his scholarship and still bring him on than give him a scholarship if he wasn't already committed. Unless the guy is a Fourette or Clowney type elite prospect he might not get his offer honored if he isn't committed and suffers a serious injury.

As you can see with just about every prospect their original school is still honoring their scholarship offer even if they visit right before signing day. Harvey visited Texas, Bonney visited Baylor, Alaka did A&M etc but each of those schools would still take the guy if he chose to stay with his commitment. There's almost no downside for an early commitment from the prospect perspective.

Guess I'm not really sure what you mean here. Football doesn't have any early signing period so unless you're an early enrollee who wants to start the spring semester instead of the summer then you sign and fax your LOI on national signing day. Some kids enroll early for spring semester if they're JUCO or have the credits to graduate HS by December of their senior year. I guess the upside there for an athlete is a chance to get acclimated to school while going through spring workouts and not the hectic time during the season.

Anyone think that Coach Strong has interest? Mike Mitchell was redshirted last year, so he has 4 more eligible years of play. Supposedly his father is diagnosed with a serious illness and that's the reason for his transfer. He wants to be closer to home(Plano) so it's very likely that he chooses a Texas school.

From what I saw it's going to be TCU or SMU.

Mike Mitchell was one of my favorite prospects last year. I think wherever he lands he will be a good one.

Nah, he's MIA.

FYI I'm out of town and have to be until Feb 10th, so I won't be able to post much.

Rations are low, morale is lower.

morale is lower.

That's mostly because we are getting our ass handed to us in recruiting.

I think they're doing pretty good all things considered.

An update to an earlier post in this section.

I asked everyone in general about preferred walk-on status a few weeks ago as it relates to my nephew, who is in the 2014 graduating class.

Well, a scholarship to UL-Monroe did not materialize, so my nephew, Kellen McAlone (Dallas Jesuit WR) will walk on at the University of Pittsburgh.

The staff seemed genuinely interested in him and he's excited about the opportunity. They have what appears be a pretty solid coaching staff (lead by coach Chryst). Hopefully he will get on the field at some point in time (probably not until 2015 at the earliest).

Thanks again for the info you guys provided.

USC QB Max Wittek will visit Texas and Coach Strong. Max will graduate in May, but will be eligible to
play next season and have two years left. Max lost the USC QB job to Cody Kessler and is now looking for
another school to play with. He will visit other schools but Texas was his first stop.
