I'm not sure if Texas is still currently recruiting RB SoSo Jamabo but he had a monster games this past week. The 6'3", 210-pound playmaker erupted for 484 yards and six scores on 31 carries in a 49-31 win.

Longhorn senior WR Jaxon Shipley sustained a head injury during the BYU
game and is questionable for Saturday's game with UCLA. "Jaxon is being
evaluated, treated and is currently going through our rigorous return to play
protocols," Texas Head Athletic Trainer for Football Anthony Pass said.

Some positive new during a week that has been mostly about BYU.
Per the LSU site on 24/7, they believe that, of the 3 runningback commits they have, Nick Brossette is the one most likely not to sign with LSU. They have sources close to him and to University Lab, that feel he would end up signing with Texas over LSU as things is today. Apparently Brossette has been through a lot with his family, so he is looking to make the best decision for them. Texas sells him on early playing time and lots of carries early in his career, which LSU can't with Fournette.

The fact that BYU only bet Houston 33-25, puts further in perspective how far Texas has fell off. And honestly it's getting pretty sickening. I'm still optimistic that our defense we'll get it together but the offense is way to conservative to garner any level of hope. I'm not confident in the offense at this point not am I confident in the defense when facing a option heavy team but I think they'll stand stout against any other offense. I don't think we're facing another option team like BYU with a quarterback as good as Hill for the rest of the season. So I think that the defense will clearly be the strength of the team and the offense will be the crutch all year, unless they open it up.

As far as I know, the only other great option QBs we'll face are Knight at OU and Walsh at OKST, if he's back (and I don't think he will be). Some of the other guys can run, but I don't think any of them are as zone read-heavy as those two teams.

Very true. Swoopes is still a couple years away from being the QB that we would want. The coaches know this and having him make throws that they know he can not make could ruin him early. While it will lead to losses, I see what they are trying to do. We have to field a QB, but we do not want to ruin his psyche by having him make numerous interceptions, etc. They will grind out the season with the hope that he can use it to blossom in one year instead of two.
The defense is a beast, but any defense that will be kept on the field as long as ours will be worn down game after game. It will be hard to watch, but it will come around. I wouldn't be surprised to see the worst record we have had in a loooong time this year. But as our OL gets seasoned from all these games, they should become at least average in performance next year and superior in performance the following. It is just painful and agonizing to see it all happen in seemingly slow motion. It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

09-12-2014, 05:42 PM
The talent level is only going to go down after this season. I see no reason for a guy like Jonathan Gray to stay for his senior year behind a oline this bad, he has his health to think about. Same for Malcolm Brown (DT), no reason to come back to a team that is this far from contention. That means this team is going to be a shit sandwich for the rest of this year and all of next season.
After that I think you will see things get better if Strong is the right man for the job, if not he is gone after year 3.

If it was all about coaching, why don't we ever hear about phenomenal freshmen OL? For the OL, you need size and strength. The sheer bulk of the dominant OL man takes years to obtain. Three of the starters for Texas are freshmen or Sophomores. It will take at least another one or two years just to get them bulked up and ready. The knuckleheads we had really screwed us by their actions.
I don't need to justify the QB issue, do I?

Yep. Being impatient and firing Strong after this season or next season would only set the program back more. If the team is still not in the Big 12 title conversation after year 3 then they can talk about whether or not to head in a new direction. I think that's a fair amount of time and fair expectations.
If Texas had talent, Mack Brown would still have a job.
If David Ash could have stayed healthy last season, he still probably would be coach.

Thankfully we have two weeks to prepare for Kansas.
It's a good game to finally air out the offense and see what Swoopes can really do. The game plan was still too conservative tonight. Hardly any balls thrown downfield and Swoopes has an amazingly strong arm that shouldn't be wasted.
Can someone fill me in on all the suspensions? I don't understand these indefinite length suspensions... what criteria is Strong using to determine who will and won't be back? It all seems very suspicious to me.

LB and Baylor commit Breckyn Hager received an offer from Texas last night, per 24/7. Hager said it came out of nowhere and that it doesn't change anything regarding his commitment to Baylor, though it was an emotional one with his father being a Texas legacy.
I'm not sure I'm buying it. His coach doesn't know anything about the offer, and as far as I could see, some Twitter account first reported it, then Baylors 24/7 picked up the story. It seems like a very odd time to extend an offer.

If the source is true about Breckyn Hager and he we're to stick with Baylor is shouldn't be too big of a surprise considering his brother Bryce Hager is the starting LB for Baylor. Bryce is a 5th year Sr. for the Bears and one heck of a player who was basically on all defensive award watch lists. Can't really blame the kid he other follows in his fathers footsteps or his brothers.

BREAKING: Texas Flips North Carolina Defensive Back Commitment2 minutes ago
Horns247 has learned that the Texas Longhorns have flipped North Carolina defensive back commit Jamile Johnson (http://247sports.com/Player/Jamile-Johnson-20674) of South Oak Cliff (Dallas, Tex.).
The 6-foot-1, 194-pound safety/cornerback originally committed to Oklahoma last February, before switching to the Tar Heels in mid-August. When the University of Texas offered today, however, the three-star prospect decided he wanted to stay closer to home and made a decision to become a Longhorn.
Johnson chose Texas overs North Carolina, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Louisville, Maryland, Texas Tech, Nebraska, TCU, Washington State and many more.

Texas agrees to deal with Michigan for future home-and-home series:
Austin -- The University of Texas has reached an agreement in principle with the University of Michigan for a home-and-home football series in Ann Arbor on Aug. 31, 2024, and in Austin on Sept. 4, 2027, the school announced Wednesday. The agreement will be presented to The UT System Board of Regents for their consideration on Nov. 5-6, 2014.The match-up brings together two of the winningest programs in NCAA history with Michigan ranking first in all-time wins with 912, while Texas is third with 876.The lone previous meeting between the two schools came in the 2005 Rose Bowl following the 2004 season. The two storied programs created a classic as Texas prevailed, 38-37, on Dusty Mangum's 37-yard field goal as time expired. Vince Young accounted for 372 yards and five TDs, including 192 yards and four TDs on the ground, as the Longhorns won in their first BCS Bowl appearance to cap an 11-1 season.

An article about Britt Hager. The last quote is interesting.
Hager’s biggest enjoyment in life comes from watching his four sons thrive, as all of them received football scholarships. His oldest played for North Texas, while another played for Blinn College. Another of his sons, Bryce, is tormenting Big 12 offenses for Baylor as a fifth-year senior. And his youngest, Breckyn, is a two-star high school senior working to decide on a college now.
Breckyn can follow in his brother’s footsteps to Waco, where he has verbally committed. Or he can follow in his father’s, as Texas recently offered him a scholarship.
“It’s hard to tell [where he will go] because he emotionally loves both of them,” Hager said of his son’s decision. “He’s my only son that looked at me and said, ‘I’m going to beat your tackling record.’”

BREAKING: Lodge Decommits From Texas A&M13 minutes ago
According to multiple sources, Texas A&M wide receiver commit Damarkus Lodge (http://247sports.com/Player/Damarkus-Lodge-21089) has opened up his recruitment and he informed David Beaty (http://247sports.com/Coach/David-Beaty-681) that he's formally de-committed. The four-star pass catcher told GigEm247 Wednesday night, “I still haven’t ventured out to everywhere I want to look at. This is all about me being able to go see other places.”
The Aggies depth at receiver and rushing into his decision were also cited as reasons for his decommitment.
Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU are schools the Cedar Hill product are highly considering at the moment. LSU and Ole Miss could be options as well but Lodge prefers to stay close to home.

My own theory is Lodge eliminated UT once Darrell Wyatt left, and I still wonder what happened. I tend to believe Lodge and his family were told, or believe, Wyatt had a messy interview with Strong and that pissed them off. There had been rumors out there that Wyatt wanted more playcalling responsibilities if he were to stay at UT, but Strong wasn't on board with that.
I can't think of any other reason why Lodge and his family haven't visited Texas once during Strong's tenure, because UT was his leader up until the day Mack got fired. The guy used to go out of his way to visit Austin, but has never had any interest in visiting with the new staff. And it wasn't like he committed to A&M right away; he committed five months after Strong was hired.
As far as his A&M de-commitment, maybe he got word Wyatt is getting a job somewhere.

Lodge Commits To Texas A&MJun 19, 12:53 PM
Wide receiver Damarkus Lodge (http://247sports.com/Player/Damarkus-Lodge-21089) of Cedar Hill, Texas, committed to Texas A&M on Thursday afternoon. Lodge, a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite, chose the Aggies over offers from LSU, Baylor, Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, USC and others.
In the span of the next two weeks following the Allen quarterback’s monumental pledge to Kevin Sumlin (http://247sports.com/Coach/Kevin-Sumlin-653)’s program, #WRTS popped up on Snyder’s twitter feed three more times in reaction to the commitments of Kemah Siverand (http://247sports.com/Player/Kemah-Siverand-29735), Richard Moore (http://247sports.com/Player/Richard-Moore-21088) and five-star wide receiver Damarkus Lodge (http://247sports.com/Player/Damarkus-Lodge-21089).
Mesquite Poteet LB Malik Jefferson (http://247sports.com/Player/Malik-Jefferson-27668) is considered to be an Aggie lean, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, so when five-star WR Damarkus Lodge (http://247sports.com/Player/Damarkus-Lodge-21089) committed to Texas A&M today, it caught his attention in a big way once again.
Etc. GigEm247 considered him a five-star prospect until today.

Update on OL Garrett Thomas of Many, LA (24/7):
“My team is doing very well right now and I have to do everything I can to make us better. I have to work on everything; from steps to sets to being more of a leader,” Thomas said. “I have really tried to shut my recruitment down completely and have been pretty successful in that.”
“He's (Coach Wickline) just really been stressing the importance of being ready for action in the spring and telling me that I'll be thrown in the fire early,” Thomas said.
“He told me on my first visit that his absolute plan is to redshirt everyone unless unavoidable. But lately he has been talking a lot about how important it is that Connor (Williams) and I come in and do everything we can to contribute because we are early enrolling.”
“I think that would be an awesome achievement and something I will do everything I can to accomplish,” he said.
“I’ve really been developing a relationship with Coach Wick. I talk with him weekly and sometimes multiple times in a week. Our relationship has really changed from him being a recruiter to him being a coach for me,” Thomas said.
“I really liked a lot of what I saw against UCLA,” he said. “I think they really came out to fight and showed a lot of heart. That really stood out to me.”

JUCO OL Brandon Hodges of East Mississippi CC responds to his Texas offer (24/7):
"They (Texas) like my game, I'm a great pass-protection guy," Hodges told Horns247 on Tuesday. "Working against the pass-rush. We do a lot of pro-style offense with the inside zone, zone read and zone option, so they like the way I move — quick, long arms, fast type of guy."
"Coming to Texas would be nice, but I'll weigh my options," he said.
"You just want to go to a school that you feel comfortable at," Hodges said. "A good environment, great people and people that you know would go the extra mile for you, as you'll go the extra mile for them."
"I like that, yes sir, I like that a lot," he said. "You have to grow up and be a man. Those types of characteristics and traits (marijuana, stealing, guns) won't will make you a man."
"And education plays a big role. I love hitting the books. That's a big factor."

Update on CB Kris Boyd of Gilmer from an anonymous source (24/7). I think there's confusion in the last part about the A&M/Alabama game. Doesn't sound like the source and/or the Boyds know the game is in Tuscaloosa this time:
“He’s slowed down finally,” said a source close to his recruitment. “He’s actually been pretty chill about it all. He’s just playing ball right now and trying to lead his team to their goal as a team and that’s to head to AT&T stadium to win it all.”
“I know he’s also excited about what his brother has coming his way and is slowing it down because of that,” the source added.
“I think he stays in state,” the source said. “I don’t think that FSU is actually a realistic option. They are too far away and he’s aware of just how far it is. He hated the drive to Alabama and I know the FSU drive was just the same. He would rather be closer to home. It’s basically Texas versus Texas A&M now with Florida State being a dark horse and minor possibility.”
“I know they (Kris and DeMarco) want to see Texas A&M versus Alabama and Texas versus Oklahoma,” the source told Horns247. “Those will be the only two (visits) they take. Kris wanted to see Texas A&M and I know they both wanted to root for Texas in the Cotton Bowl."

Most of my elementary/middle school friends did but I moved to Bullard for HS. Small school just south of town. They are actually doing quite well this year. Their coach since 2010 is Shannon Wilson, who was DC at Southlake Carroll. Update on LB Cameron Townsend who officially visited Oregon State over the weekend (24/7):
“It (official to Oregon State) went well,” Townsend said. “I hung out with the coaches and players and went to the game. I had a really good time.”
“It was a little warmer than expected, but still not exactly hot by Houston standards. It felt good for the most part though,” he said. “I had been there before, so I’d say it met my (expectations). It was really cool. I wish I could go again.”
“The Oklahoma visit is when they play Kansas State. I’m not sure the exact date. For Texas I’m probably going to go when they play West Virginia on Nov. 8,” he said. “My decision will still be in October. I’m going to commit a few days after I visit Oklahoma.”

“The main thing is that I love Coach (Joe) Wickline,” he said. “He’s such an experienced coach whose record speaks for itself. He’s done a lot with the guys he’s had in the past and putting them in the NFL. He was a major reason I picked Texas.”
“I also have a chance to see some early playing time if I continue to work hard,” Williams added. “Coach Wickline told me if I prepare and work hard, I could definitely see the field early, which is something I would love to do. I feel like I can help make an impact immediately as long as I keep putting in extra work.”
“It’s a rebuilding process,” he said. “It will take a little time, but Texas will be back on top real soon. We’ll be competing for national championships in no time. People better be ready. Get your shots in now, that’s all I can say.”

LB Breckyn Hager of Austin Westlake talks about his commitment to Texas (24/7):
“We were trying to keep the offer quiet and that is why no one really knew about it. I didn’t want to be a distraction to my team and just wanted to keep it quiet,” Hager told Horns247 last night. “It happened about three weeks ago. Coach Strong called me and said he wanted a Hager out there on Texas’ field and doing great things and then he offered me.”
“I didn’t completely take the coaching standpoint out of my options, because coaches come and go. I loved the (Baylor coaches). It was the hardest decision and then I had to go tell those guys,” Hager said. “I was contemplating putting on that burnt orange uniform. Just every morning when I go to Westlake I see that UT tower every day.”
"I basically just asked him (Britt Hager) what do I do now? He wanted me to follow my heart and make sure that everything I did was respectful and really take into account the coaching situation. You know, I love Coach Strong and what he's doing there is great, and I love Coach Briles and all of them, but coaches come and go. You can't make a decision off of that."
“He really wants a guy loves Texas and wanted someone that really understood what Texas is. He wanted that on the field and that makes sense to me,” he said. “My emotions right now are just so happy. I’m just so blessed. I want to go in and start as a freshman and put on that uniform and beat my dad’s record.”

Update on LB Anthony Wheeler of Dallas Skyline (24/7):
“I definitely plan on going to that (Texas vs. OU),” he said. “That’s something I have wanted to go check out for awhile now. It should be a lot of fun.”
“Not (rooting for a certain team) at all,” Wheeler said. “It’s definitely not like that. I just want to see good things out of both of their defenses more than anything. It can end in a tie for all I care. I’m more worried about how their defense plays on both sides.”
“That was the only thing holding Texas back for me,” Wheeler said. “I just want to get to know that coaching staff like the coaching staff at Oklahoma. That’s the biggest deal.”
“The Sooners are still on top for that very reason,” he added. “But it’s close, real close.”

24/7 says that the info regarding a potential visit comes from a Texas commit that has been in contact with Clark. Interesting. The Michigan mods says that Clark has reached out to the Texas staff "for sure". They can also confirm that he has "strong interest in Texas".
So Clark (the 2nd ranked TE per the Composite rankings) has strong interest in Texas but no offer or contact with the staff. Devonaire Clarington (the 4th ranked TE per the Composite rankings) has a "10 out of 10 interest" in Texas but hasn't heard from them in weeks. WTF is Bruce Chambers doing?! The 24/7 A&M site had an update on Malik Jefferson. Let's just say that is wasn't an update that A&M fans wanted. Most of them seem to believe that they are on the outside looking in and that he is headed to Texas. Only the most stubborn and delusional (I'm not trying to call out the entire fan base, but there is a handful of posters who are delusional. Even the A&M fans doesn't like them) thinks he ends up at A&M. I don't really get why, because there wasn't anything in the update that suggested he was going to Texas. It was very political. He said all the right things.
The only "new" (Jeff Howe and Hamm had a HUGE update yesterday on him), is that he is looking at Oregon, USC, LSU and Notre Dame for potential official visits. As we know, he won't use a OV on a school within driving distance. His moms birthday is the "Red River Rivalry"-weekend and she says she would love to spend it in Dallas for the game. The most interesting thing though, is that if Malik himself can't come to a decision, his father is the one who'll make the decision for him. His mother LOVES Texas, but no one really knows who his father likes.

"Texas has always been in the race. Ever since I started my recruitment, got in high school, Texas the place I always wanted to be," Johnson said. "It was my dream school. When I got that opportunity, I took it."
"Texas has so much history. It's only four hours down the road. And the history of DBs at Texas is insane," Johnson said.
"I just talked to my coaches when I got offered. Actually, Texas had been in contact and they were saying they were going to offer. Then it finally came through," Johnson said. "It surprised me at first. They told me they had always been interested in me. They also said they're hoping they can get me in for early enrollment, but they're looking for me to come in and make an immediate impact."
"I can bring versatility, physicality, speed, aggressiveness - bring a lot to the defense," Johnson said. "I actually still want to improve on my speed a little bit. I'm fast, but a bit of a long strider, so I want to shorten up my steps."

All unofficial visits require the prospect to pay their way, unless the unofficial visit is on a game day where only tickets are free. I believe each prospect is still given 4 tickets (including the prospect). Each school will have a certain location where recruits can pick up their identification and/or tickets, and then they'll head to a section designated for recruits and their families. A lot of them will be on the field or in the facilities before the game starts. Unofficial visits are unlimited to any campus, but you can't have in-person contact with anyone during a dead period.
