FYI, Boise offered him recently.... someone asked on Twitter why they would offer when "he has no chance of leaving Ole Miss" and he replied with something like "you never know what the future holds," now he's uncommitted....

Quotes from the father of CB Kendall Sheffield on his recent conversation with Coach Strong (OrangeBloods):
"It went fine. It was more of a trying to get us on campus, he wants us to come up there and see how he runs his practice, see how he runs things," Mr. Sheffield said. "He basically just wants to get us up there for a visit."
"It was more getting to know him. He was giving us some background about himself, his plans for UT, getting to know us and getting us up there," Mr. Sheffield said.

Update on 2016 QB Brennen Wooten of Marble Falls after attending practice yesterday (OrangeBloods):
"They (Texas) contacted my coach, wanted me to come up and see practice, watch them go through practice, see how it went," Wooten said. "I decided to go up there and it went well."
"I talked to coach (Shawn) Watson a little bit before practice started. I got to talk to coach Strong a little bit. it was a good deal. It's a cool experience for sure. They're great guys."
"They're right in my backyard here at Marble Falls. I can go check them out any time I want to" Wooten said. "They're a big-time school, someone I'll look at hard."
"I was very impressed. The team was working hard out there. I think he's going to get that things turned around," Wooten said. "I watched some of everything, but I mainly focused on the QBs, how they're getting coached. I was impressed with those guys. They looked really good today."

CB PJ Mbanasor of Pflugerville Hendrickson talks about his upcoming visit to UT (OrangeBloods):
"I know they have a whole new coaching staff. I know three corners they've offered. I feel like I exceed their skill sets and I'm only 25 minutes away," Mbanasor said. "It's their judgment ... I'm just going to go there Saturday with an open mind, just see what they're about."
"I've never visited before. I live by them, I have seen facilities from the outside, but I've never been inside the stadium, never been to a UT game. I've been on the track for track events, but I would like to see things closer."

Update on TE Will Gragg of Pine Bluff, AR who says he's been receiving 30 letters per day from UT (OrangeBloods):
"They're all hand-written in burnt orange little note cards," Gragg said. "And I talk to coach Strong about once a week."
"We talk about how they're going to utilize the tight ends in their offense, that after this year, they'll be losing a few tight ends and they need a guy to come in play early. Plus he's from Batesille, Arkansas. My mom grew up in Newport, Arkansas. They knew some of the same people so that's cool. He and my principal went to college together and were in the same fraternity."
"Big time (fan of Texas). It goes as far back when I was a big Vince Young fan. I still have his jersey in my room," Gragg said. "Ricky Williams, Jamaal Charles, just like Texas' swagger. They have discipline and have their own style to it. And it's the biggest fan base in the country too."

24/7 also moved QB Travis Waller, who said Texas and Stanford was his dream offers, to 36th overall in the country.
Lucier-South and Waller are two prospects I really hope that Texas gets on campus.

As I watch Texas get blown out, I have to think of another kind of recruiting. What about going after Coach Marshall from Wichita State? He has an awesome resume and look what he's been able to do with WSU in the middle of nowhere. The Koch brothers are Wichita State supporters, but Marshall is still earning peanuts.

We might actually develop kids who want to learn the game. Possible surprises from the unheralded 3 star and below who grows up. Getting kids to surpass expectations... It's been a while.

A shot at a coach like Marshall is a rare opportunity. While Barnes has had success at recruiting, getting the subsequent consistent success in the tourney has been lacking. It is not an easy decision to go from one success to reach for a higher opportunity. Think of George Hill being traded for a draft pick .... Kawhi. That was not an easy decision, but we upgraded with it. Marshall is an incredible motivator and has done so much more with so much less. Give Marshall the resources that Texas offers and maybe he's the next Coach K.
In general, we should be having more success. We kept waiting for Mack to turn things around, but we should have seen what we had. We can take a wait and see attitude, but a rare opportunity at what could be a Hall of Fame Coach is staring us in the face.
Edit: As I think about this, another example would be Bob Hill, who had a W-L record of 121 - 43 his first 2 seasons coaching the Spurs. In his 3rd season he gets canned after 18 games because the team is 3-15 due to injuries to DRob and Sean Elliott. Fans were shocked and angry. Yet, in hindsight, it was a good move. Back then Pop didn't have a great track record when he stepped in. Yet few (only those on ST) would argue with the results. Coach Marshall does have a great track record and all indications are that he is on the path of doing great things.
Edit 2: So after some more thorough fact checking, Marshall will make $1.75M next year and has a current year buyout of $400k, which reduces by $100k each year for the next 2 years. His record of success at WSU is pretty impressive (and shows a lot of hunger):

Yeah I know, COY for the conference is no small thing... but there just hasn't been much success at the dance, which is where it really counts.
We have been doing a lot of 1-and-done recruiting... maybe we should target those who will stick around for at least a couple to three years...
How do we get over the hump?
Imo: we rebounded very well this year and had some athletes but we are still very poorly coached.
Barnes will not get us there. And the good players know we are a dead end for significant improvement.
Barnes getting COY is significant in my mind as this means he has to stay. All of our sports barring volleyball are suffering.
I hope the new AD and even football coach can change a possible atmosphere of complacency that occurs with success followed by a job finished attitude (see Mack and Dodds).

This is all fine. But when 68 teams are now allowed in a tourney making it should not be the standard. Barnes has completely lost a team, as in players don't give a shit. More than once. This does not happen if you recruit properly and coach well. Losing your players is worse, much worse, than not making the tourney.
We also play the ugliest basketball on earth. Honestly, I would rather lose with inferior athletes who play the game the proper way. And I don't keep up with many coaches except Barnes. He is not good. HE needs to improve more than the kids.

Exactly. If they weren't going to fire the guy when his recruiting experiment of 1 and done guys coupled with bad evals hurt the program they why would they fire him when he turns it around with an exciting freshman PG, sophomore center, only one guy returning as a senior next season, and a legit shot at one of the top players in the country? This team is perfectly set up to be the type of team he coaches well so firing him now would be extremely stupid. You give him this chance to develop this group and if he loses them and underachieves the next season or two you replace him then.

Update on 2015 QB Zach Gentry of Albuquerque, NM after receiving his Texas offer yesterday (OrangeBloods):
"It's awesome. Texas is big time, lots of fan support," Gentry said. "They have great facilities, it's a great university with lots of tradition and history. It's a great program overall."
"My strength overall is my arm strength and my accuracy. Being the size I am, 6-6, 230, people think I'm not as quick or fast as a quarterback should be," Gentry said. "I timed in the mid 4.6 range last summer, so I'm a little faster than people think I am. Another thing people question is the strength of schedule in New Mexico. But I would say my strengths are my arm strength, accuracy and mobility."
"I think they're a great hire. Texas, I think they know what they're doing. He (Charlie Strong) was extremely successful at Louisville, and coach Strong built a really strong program there," Gentry said. According to Inside Texas, QB Kyle Kearns of Pleasanton, CA will be returning to campus the first part of April and it sounds like he'll work out for Coach Watson.
"Texas felt like a second home to me," said Kearns. "It's great to know they still want me because I hadn't heard from them after Mack Brown left. When coach Watson called, I was ecstatic."

Some notes from OB and IT via Shaggy:
- LB Malik Jefferson was "really impressed" with Strong and Jean-Mary as well as the intensity of the practices. He plans to unofficially visit for the home opener vs. UNT. “I’d rate the visit a nine out of ten,” Jefferson said. When asked what stood out, he said, “Charlie Strong! I love his mindset.”
- Nothing but good stuff on RB/ATH Chris Warren. He insisted that his mom meet the coaches and loved the intensity of the practice. He'll be visiting OU and OK St. the next couple of weeks and plans to attend Texas, Tech and Arky spring games.
- DB Roney Elam left campus early, ostensibly because he didn't know the coaches wanted to meet with him after practice. He's visiting A&M Friday, Baylor later and his recruitment is wide open.
- RB Ronald Jones talked to Robinson last night. The coaches are trying to get him to come by during Texas Relays. Jones said he wants to see how the offense plays out next season.
- 2016 DB Jarey Mayden is expected to be at practice this weekend.

Him and his teammate DT Javier Edwards (who I think is the most intriguing of the two) plays for a new school. Aldine Davis HS is 3-4 years old, so they haven't played a full varsity schedule yet. They will this year I believe. With that said, most of the clips in their highlights are from the 3-4 games they played last year against varsity teams. A few of the clips are from games against JV's. The head coach at Aldine Davis compares Lexington Thomas to Trey Williams who committed to A&M a few years ago. Aldine Davis has a third prospect that could become interesting down the line. 16' LB Jeffrey McCulloch. Aldine Davis' head coach raved about how smart he is and how athletic he is.
No word on Thomas and Texas. Yesterday Edwards told 24/7 that he always wanted to be a Longhorn, so if Texas gets in on him, they would sit pretty good.

-CB Xavier Lewis of Reserve, LA says he wants to narrow down his list to five schools this spring. He currently has A&M, Florida and LSU in there, but isn't sure where Texas sits at the moment. Sounds like UT will need to get him back on campus to stay in the race.
-DE James Lockhart of Ennis should still be considered a Baylor lean, but he's mentioned he's "feeling" the new staff and the positive momentum UT has going right now.

Update on RB Ronald Jones of McKinney North before he visits Austin for Texas Relays (OrangeBloods). He is currently contemplating stopping by the coaches' offices while he's in town:
"(Monday's conversation) was more about an emphasis on getting me down there," Jones said of his conversation with Robinson. "I'm going to be running in the Texas Relays, so he wants to talk to my coach, see if he can steal me after the meet. He wants to learn more about me and wants me to learn more about them."
"I really did like them (Texas) in the beginning, just don't know if it's going to be a good fit for me," Jones said. "I love their old offense, Texas is obviously the standard, but I don't know if it's a good fit now."
"I know coach Strong is going to get them back. I think they're still going to run the pistol, but I want to see how the offense does next year," Jones said.

Orangebloods had an update with a quote from this guy. Apparently he is the son of former Longhorn William Graham, who played at Texas from 1978-1981 before moving on to the NFL and the Detroit Lions.
"If I was to get offered, I would definitely come here," Graham said following Saturday's visit.

towards the end of last season, teams such as LSU and SC backed off the rush and pretty much sealed off any alleys for JF resulting in some of his worst performances of the season. allen is more of an accurate passer than JF ever was in college and his athleticism is underrated. he will not be JF when it comes to pulling a rabbit out of the hat though. but sumlin's successful offenses at U of H were predicated on having a solid packet passer and allen will fit that description to a tee. hill's arrest may result in a suspension but while allen has impressed in camp with his throwing, hill and joeckel have the advantage of being more familiar with the offense. anyway, with new receivers and some lost lineman this year appears to be somewhat of a learning curve season anyway. but these arrests of key players is getting a bit dicey.

Still think Hill will be best option at QB - it's college and he got drunk, big deal. As long as he learns from it... Allen certainly has better shot now but a true freshman drop back passer would be tough position no matter how good he is.
I remember when all wrote off Manziel after his arrest.

TE Will Gragg of Pine Bluff, AR reviews his visit to UT last weekend (24/7):
"(My impression) went extremely up," Gragg said. "I came in with high expectations and they exceeded all of those to the highest level. It was great just being able to interact with the coaches and the players."
"I want to get down there (Austin) maybe one or two more times in the summer and then come down there for my official on Sept. 6," he said.
"When I was down there I got to see the Texas Relays obviously, but I also got to see the facilities and meet with Coach (Charlie) Strong and meet all the coaches,” Gragg said.
"I got to see a practice and that was nice,” he added. “It was intense. Those boys get after it. Their defense, they play really intense and Coach Strong loves it. The offense struggled a little bit because the defense was just so good."
"It doesn't matter to me because I feel like I can do both at an extremely high level,” Gragg said. “If they feel like they want to leave me out in the slot I would like to do that or I can put my hand on the ground and block down on defensive ends."
"I was with Coach (Bruce) Chambers and I watched the way (the tight ends) blocked and they ran routes,” he added. “I watched the different zone blocking schemes that they do. But basically the physicality of the practice was what I watched.”
"Yeah, those coaches, they were amazing," Gragg said. "I got to talk to Coach Strong and he is the head guy and you couldn't tell from just talking to him. He is an extremely genuine guy. I got to talk to Coach Chambers and I would spend the most of my time with him if I were to go there. We got to sit in the film session a lot and talk with the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Just everybody in general gave it a homey feeling."

Looks a little flexible, should be a good thing. I think one of the worst parts is your head rattling around inside an inflexible outer shell. About time the helmet got a serious makeover. Less rattling around is a good thing for your brain.

“It was intense (at Saturday's practice),” he said. “I liked watching that defensive line get after it. Coach (Chris) Rumph got after it with those guys and they were making some big plays out there. Update on CB Jordan Tolbert of Fort Bend Ridge Point (24/7):
"When I went there (Texas) it was nice meeting Coach Strong. I went there a couple of times when Coach (Mack) Brown was there, but it was cool just meeting the new coaching staff. It seems like they are going to have a good team next year cause they know what they are doing," Tolbert said. "(Coach Strong) was the one that offered me actually. He just told me he likes the way I play and to just keep my head up and keep playing like I've been playing and don't give up," he said.
"I really only talk to Texas, Houston and Baylor right now. That's who I really have been talking to," he said. "I'm really just trying to see who else is going to offer. I'm just taking my time and I'm not trying to rush anything."

According to 24/7, UT is starting to pick up their efforts with WR Carlos Strickland of Dallas Skyline:
“I talked to Coach Chambers yesterday,” said Strickland. “We spoke for a while and he basically was saying that he wants to build a strong relationship with me and wants me to get to know him and the rest of the coaches well."
“Coach Chambers seems like a pretty cool guy,” he added. “It’s going to be good to get to know them. He said the same thing. He told me he wanted to see how I was as a person off the field first before they offer.”
“I will actually already be in Austin on May 9 for the state meet,” Strickland said. “So since I’m going to be there, we decided that would be the best time (to meet up). That’s when I’m going to make my visit to Texas and see what all they have to offer. I can’t wait. I’m excited for sure.”
“I would say they’re sitting pretty high for me right now already,” Strickland said. “They’re close to home and I also already have family in Austin, so that’s a plus for me. It would be great to get that offer and it would give me a lot to think about.”

Update on the commitment status of DT Bryce English of DeSoto (24/7):
“Texas is my only offer right now, but I’m looking around,” said English. “I went to Baylor’s junior day and I’m going to LSU’s spring game this weekend. A lot of schools are showing interest too like Arizona State, Notre Dame and Iowa."
“I feel like Baylor or Iowa could be the next to offer,” he added. “I’d like to see USC and Cal as well. I’d like to take a visit to California to see them and to Florida to see some of those schools, too. I’m not real sure if I have favorites after Texas, but I’d like to get offers from LSU, Florida and USC.”
“I’m still with Texas right now but I’m basically looking around,” he explained.
“Their (UT's) new coaches are pretty nice and they’re a good staff,” said English. “I know a lot of the coaches from my dad growing up with them. I’m real familiar with them and I have my Godfather (Bruce Chambers) down there, so I like the staff. Oh man, with Coach Strong and Coach (Chris) Rumph all they want to do is win. They’re there to turn the Texas program around.”
