Per Inside Texas, UT is currently giving JUCO QB Max Staver of Tyler JC a hard look and he may end up being the transfer they're looking for. Staver has been quite the journeyman as he signed with Florida in 2013 and also had a stint at East Mississippi CC, but there is a lot of familiarity between him and the UT coaches. His first offer in high school came from Coach Watson at Louisville and his second came from Coach Koenning at Mississippi State. The report also mentioned JUCO QB Daniel Fitzwater as an option that's still on the table.

A name we haven't talked much about for 2016 is highly-rated WR Dee Anderson of West Mesquite. LSU offered in July and he jumped on it almost immediately, but the additions of LB Malik Jefferson and ATH DeAndre McNeal may have re-opened that door to the point where if UT offers, he'll commit. Just something to keep an eye on, per Inside Texas.

I like Clarington but I don't think we can get him in. What is the story with all his school changes?

Not sure, but I think he transferred to Washington T. Booker to get a chance to win a state championship. I don't know why is transferring back now. I know a lot of people expects him, and Prep WR Gilbert Johnson, to get grades that'll get them into Texas.

I could be wrong, but I read somewhere he transferred back to his former school to get his paperwork in order. I also heard he went to Booker to win a championship.

ESPN has a good article about RB Nick Brossette. I think it's an "Insider" article, but this is what there is regarding Texas.

Nick visited Notre Dame in October and loved his visit, but after the Brossettes came back from South Bend, Indiana, they called the Irish coaches and declined because it was just too far away. Texas has come a long, long way in Nick's recruitment and is a legitimate threat to pluck him away from Louisiana. Rita calls Texas coach Charlie Strong a "perfect gentleman" and has really enjoyed the way he's recruited her son. Nick has also become "kindred spirits" with Strong, because his stepmother had multiple myeloma. Nick also is considering a visit to Arizona State, but everybody in the family understands it will come down to LSU and Texas.

A few notes from 24/7...

-LB Anthony Wheeler says he's choosing from Texas and OU on Friday. Although he's expected to commit to OU, he mentioned his closest relationship is with Coach Jean-Mary.

-WR DaMarkus Lodge said he's pretty sure that Texas will receive his last official visit.

-the crystal ball selections for ATH Tim Irvin are starting to trend towards Texas and he spoke highly of Strong today.

WR Damarkus Lodge travelled with LB Malik Jefferson to the Under Armour game. Jefferson is already on him. per 24/7.

“I just got off a three-hour plane flight with Malik. I’ve already gotten every bit of Texas I can get,” Lodge said laughing. “He was just telling me how great a program it is. He’s telling me all the things I could do coming in there.”

Two notes from the Army check-ins yesterday, from 24/7.

- TE Devonaire Clarington has 11 inch hands. The biggest hands of anyone at the game.

- CB and Georgia commit Deandre Baker is only 5'10 and 172lbs, but has 36 inch arms. Those arms are longer than OL Keaten Sutherland (6'5, 280lbs), Tristen Hoge (6'5, 292lbs) and Henry Roberts (6'6, 263lbs).

Practice Notes from what I could gather from 24/7 (Only Texas guys, commits or targets):
- DT Daylon Mack is shorter than anticipated, but quick and really powerfull.
- RB SoSo Jamabo has worked out as a WR.
- S DeShon Elliott has been looking really, really good at safety. Elliott is also back returning punts.
- Dallas Prime Prep WR Brandon Martin has been pretty good in one-on-one and he's been very physical, Brian Perroni has heard he is headed to East Mississippi Community College (OT Brandon Hodges went there).
- OT Drew Richmond had problems with DE Byron Cowart (Cowart is making a case for the number 1 player in the country though), but has held his own as LT for the most part.
- WR Damarkus Lodge has been called "a special talent".
- Malik Jefferson has no problems running with TE's in coverage
- Anthony Wheeler plays ILB.

TE Devonaire Clarington has looked great in the first Army practice. He has soft hands that catches everything thrown his way. Hasn't shown anything as a blocker (there hasn't been any drills yet). He won his share of one-on-one battles with CB's due to his size and speed.

S Tim Irvin has been vocal. By far the most vocal guy at the first practice. He has yelled at LB's for not lining up correctly in 11-on-11. The comparison to Quandre seems better and better. He's been breaking on the ball extremely quickly, arriving before the ball on a couple occasions.

Saw this quote on Shaggy, and thought it was a joke. But it's true. Daylon Mack regarding Texas, per Gerry Hamilton (ESPN).

"Oh man, to make up ground? They are only in it because my good friend Malik [Jefferson] committed there, so I feel like I have to give them a look because Malik and I would like to play together. I will give them a look, but I’m not sure after that. I’m really focused more on LSU and TCU."

It doesn't seem like he has any interest in Texas, but so did Malik Jefferson. I'm thinking he is downplaying Texas and hopes they blow him away on his visit, so that he doesn't seem like a "follower" of Jefferson.

Recruiting immature 16-18 year old kids with incomplete/inadequate family structure looks like it would be a total beating. The vast majority of these dudes will not even sniff the NFL in 4-5 years - they will also not make legit progress towards a marketable degree on top of everything else.

The twitter universe allows the egomaniacs being courted by Div I schools to come off like total douche bags with their "Top Fives Lists". It's all pretty annoying.

I would not have the patience to do what these college coaches have to do in this area.....

Blocking and tackling are so fundamental to me that's it's ridiculous to even think about executing entire plays if these items are not in place. This was the worst offensive line I have ever seen at UT. Of course Swoopes is not a QB. But who would be behind that line.

Not to pile on, but some awful stats from last night...

-Texas' lowest yardage output ever is 50 in 1943. UT racked up a whopping 59 last night.

-59 yards of offense is the fewest yards in a single game in the FBS for 2014. Nicholls State, Northern Illinois and UAB all had more yards against Arkansas.

He probably took a pay cut to leave, if this is true. Beaty is making 800k there, while McKinney was making 600k here. Might have been a "you should probably take it" situation. Good for him though. Lots of hires to be made by Sumlin. Christensen is our "run game coordinator" now, so it will be interesting to see who all is hired.

Update on John Chavis from FootballScoop...

Per source, Les and the administration met last night and then Les met with Chavis. The team is headed back to Baton Rouge today; but we understand that Chief is headed to his ranch up near Knoxville to think about some things. As of 7am this morning, per sources, he had not informed LSU or A&M of a final answer. Sources we have spoken with believe that Chavis’ buyout at LSU drops from $400,000 to zero at midnight tonight.

I'm curious who was the biggest factor in John Harris raising production from one year to the next. The last staff couldn't get anything out of him and this staff completely turned him around. Wanted to give the credit to Koenning but aside from Harris no other WR was truly a factor this year. I guess what I'm saying is Harris has been only positive out WR group aside from that I'm fine with the firing of Koenning.

I can't agree with you on that one. Warren's mother disliked Robinson while at USC because he cut off contact when Warren tore up his knee during his junior campaign. I think this one is all Strong and Inside Texas mentioned this morning that Robinson leaving wouldn't affect Warren or Brossette in the slightest. Either way, it sounds like he's staying so no worries.

Updates from the Semper Fidelis all-star game in California, from 24/7.

- After the first practice S Jamile Johnson was mentioned as the best S on the West team. He had some troubles to at the line of scrimmage in man coverage. But really excelled when he was allowed to play the deep back zone.
- DB Carlton Davis (Ohio State commit) is still considering Miami, Arkansas and Texas per the Ohio State reporter who is covering the practices for 24/7.
- CB Holton Hill has been drawing a lot of praise. He has been called the ideal CB and "pure gold to a defensive coordinator".
- DE Charles Omenihu is all frame right now. He had troubles with his initial punch and getting off blocks. He is quick and he flashes his potential.
- WR Carlos Strickland is a mismatch. He is big and strong, but he is incredibly raw as a route runner. Tremendous body control.

This might be tough for Canes fans to swallow. From everything I have been told on Tim Irvin (http://www.canesinsight.com/recruits/showentry.php?e=206), his heart is in Miami, but it is unlikely he winds up here. Multiple people around the Westminster program tell me that Texas and Auburn are basically his final 2 with Miami on the outside looking in. As I've posted on here a few times, Irvin's biggest question about Miami is his potential position coach Paul Williams.

A small update from Rivals that I came across yesterday.

5-star DT Edwin Alexander of St. Thomas Aquinas (La.) likes Texas. He was committed to LSU until April where he de-committed to make sure he made the right decision. LSU is still the leader but Florida State, USC and Texas are high on his list. Alexander and Strong/Rumph has been following each on Twitter for months now.

4-star TE Kaden Smith of Marcus is high on Texas. Alabama and Stanford are the frontrunners and he wants to visit Auburn and Georgia soon. "Those are the ones standing out," Smith said. "There are a couple others recruiting me hard but I'm not sure if I'm leaning towards them." I'm a big fan of Smiths teammate, DE Andrew Fitzgerald as well as Smith.

Soso Jamabo of Plano West (Plano, Texas), who hasn’t announced his own decision, only paused once in predicting where any of the six would go.
“Daron to Alabama, Tyron to LSU. Tim Settle to USC, Kendall to, that’s tough,” Jamabo said, before looking over to Cedar Hill wide receiver DaMarkus Lodge, who flashed Texas A&M’s trademark Gig’ Em hand sign. “And Anthony is going to Texas and Ronald is going to Notre Dame.”

I wonder how this class will fill out.

31 roster spots, 24 of those already taken. One of those is John Burt and another is greyshirt offer Matthew Merrick. That leaves 7-9 spots left, depending on those two. Devonaire Clarington and Tim Irvin is expected to commit to Texas tomorrow. That leaves 5-7 spots.

We know the staff wants two more CB's with Kris Boyd, Holton Hill, Xavier Lewis, Mark Fields and Sheldrick Redwine still on the table (I assume those 5 are their top guys). That leaves 3-5 spots. One spot will most likely go to an RB, Chris Warren or Nick Brossette. That's 2-4 spots left.

Who takes those last few spots? Bobby Burton says WR Gilbert Johnson is basically a commit, but he won't do interviews and we won't know if he makes it in until we see his grades. Daylon Mack will visit. There is still a tiny bit of smoke regarding Kyler Murray. Ryan Newsome looks like a Texas lean. OT Drew Richmond will visit a few days before NSD. Damarkus Lodge isn't completely dead. Carlos Strickland will most likely visit as well.

Right here, my friend. Couldn't post for the last few hours.

Not much to say, though. Wheeler is a great surprise and hoping for two more tomorrow (Irvin, Clarington).

Why?

Lost momentum
Put all their eggs in the Sheffield basket and now they are scrambling to find a corner to replace him.
Lodge is now favored to sign with Ol Miss
Biggest need was Linebacker and they got shutout
Next biggest need is corner and they might get shutout there as well
Prize recruit Murray is now looking around

I'd say their recruiting class is falling apart

One always wonders about these position coaches changes being lack in knowledge about the position, lack of recruiting success, inability to get along with kids and/or coaches...

What exactly was Koenning's deficiency? Not even exact, in general, what was wrong?
Anyone, any guesses?

It all depends on Kyler Murray. If he stays they'll finish with a solid top ten class. If he decommits, they'll lose more than just him and will drop to about the 15-20 range.

Only if Murray leaves, and I think the only way that happens is if he decides to play baseball. I don't believe the OU or Texas rumors. And there's a good chance Mack ends up going back.

There is a tread on 24/7 about Tee Martin (the WR coach at USC) potentially being the new WR coach. The source is "TOS", and the guy who posted it, is supposed to be Preston Sexton, son of Jimmy Sexton (Martins agent).

I'm not buying it, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I don't see how Murray would be such a huge loss to Ags aside from being a class leader (in off chance he decommits or does baseball). I just don't see him displacing Allen for next 2-3 years. Although always good to have depth.

Anybody that watched UA game also saw Daylon Mack is a beast. If A&M can get him back that would be big move. They desperately need players on defense, not offense.

Jamile Johnson and Cameron Townsend where both recognized for their superb performances in the 3rd and final practice before the Semper Fidelis All American Bowl that'll be played Sunday at 7pm. Texas target Holton Hill was also a big standout in the 2nd practice and Was the first to start trash talking. Charles Omenihu is also playing in the game and has been flashing at times.

FWIW, he means Clarington is the third guy to pledge overall and will do so in Q2. Same for Irvin (7th to pledge, I believe he's second in Q3). As written, it sounds like there are going to be like 10 pledges per quarter. Here's a list.

Quotes from LB Anthony Wheeler and his mother after committing to UT (24/7):

“I sat down with my family and talked about how comfortable I felt with the coaches and how comfortable I felt with the school,” Wheeler said. “I felt like that's where I needed to be.”

“I'm very excited,” Ballard told 247Sports' Luke Stampini. “I actually thought he was going to go with OU, but he changed his mind at the last minute and told me he was going with Texas. He told me about a week and a half ago. He liked what Charlie Strong was doing there and what's trying to do by rebuilding a strong team. He likes his leadership, he likes his position coach and he likes all of the recruits that are coming in with him.”

“He's a real cool dude,” Wheeler said of Jean-Mary. “I've just gotten more comfortable with him. He's laid back and you can talk to him about anything. He's a good coach.”

“Nothing this week changed my mind,” Wheeler said. “I kept a clear mind coming into this week because I was already set with my decision.”

“It was an amazing environment,” Wheeler said of the 2014 contest. “I stood up the whole time and imagined myself playing in the game. It was amazing.”

A quick update on TE Devonaire Clarington from 24/7.

- His grades are good to go and he should have no trouble making it to Texas.
- He didn't even know Bruce Chambers was fired. If a recruit doesn't know his position coach has been fire, that coach needs to do something different as a recruiter to make an impression. Happy he was let go!

Did Bruce just phone in the last few years? Tight End position has been practically non-existent the past few years and our top TE recruit hardly knew him and didn't really seem to care all that much that he was fired.

I've seen talk on a few sites that Strong received a lot of feedback from high schools in DFW that Texas needed a stronger recruiting presence in that area. Chambers could no longer get by on name recognition.

As I look at the top 25, the schools I see so far with a Senior QB who hasn't used up 4 years of eligibility....

#1 Alabama - Blake Sims
#9 Ole Miss - Bo Wallace
#11 K-State - Jake Waters
#19 Auburn - Nick Marshall

Since it states a top 25 team and not top 10, would that focus it on Waters or Marshall? Are they graduating?
