Interesting update from 24/7.

They've spoken with a source close to QB Kai Locksley. They are being told that, right now, it is Auburn, Florida State or Texas (alphabetical) that he is most likely to sign with. Florida could jump in if/when they offer. 24/7 don't expect Maryland to be a factor anymore.

Admittedly I don't know much about his interest in Auburn, but Maryland was always the team that bothered me because of his father coaching there.

QB Quinten Dormady of Boerne talks about Coach Watson's visit yesterday (24/7):

“Coach Watson stayed for about an hour and a half,” Dormady told Horns247. “It went very well. He watched me throw and I did some footwork and different throws. It was sort of like an NFL pro day type deal. Then I threw to receivers who were going one on one against defensive backs. After that we did 7-on-7 at the end.”

“Basically Coach Watson said they’re going to be in touch and we’ll see how things go,” Dormady said. “I had a good day so I definitely feel like I’m getting closer to that (an offer from Texas). Obviously it’s not my decision though, so we'll see soon."

“I think he’s a great person,” Dormady said of Watson. “He’s going to coach you up and get you to the top of your game and do it the right way.”

“I’m keeping my options open right now,” he said. “I'll say that Texas is definitely up there for me though.”

Update on OL Madison Akamnonu of Arlington Bowie (24/7):

“I mean I really feel a connection with those guys and I like Coach (Joe) Wickline and Coach (Charlie) Strong a lot,” Akamnonu said. “Both of them are very cool and I enjoy talking to them. I’m looking forward to them stopping back by.”

“I’m going to go down there (Texas) for a camp and compete,” he said. “I know they already offered me, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t show them what I got. Plus, it gives me a chance to really bond with the staff there and see more of the school. I enjoyed it my first time there but wanted to see more and this will give me that chance.”

“Oh yeah they’ll be in it,” he told Horns247. “You know they’ll be up there at the top. I would expect to have Texas and Oklahoma right there side by side. I really like the both of them.”

TFloss32
05-09-2014, 12:55 PM
A new name Texas could be interested in is ATH Tony Nicholson of South Grand Prairie (24/7):

“I would definitely like to talk to them (Texas) if they are for sure interested in me,” Nicholson told Horns247. “That’s something I would like to learn more about. I’ve been talking to Charles Omenihu about it and I would be interested.”

“I’d be down to go (to a Texas camp) and show them what I can do,” he said. “That’s something that I would love to go do and a place I’d love to check out and learn more about.”

“Texas is a great place from what I hear,” added Nicholson. “I want to go down and see how they do it in Austin this summer.”

OL Patrick Vahe of Euless Trinity talks about his commitment to Texas (24/7):

“No (I'm) not (wavering) at all,” he said when asked while at Trinity on Thursday. “I love Texas. A lot. I can’t see myself anywhere else besides there. The coaches and I are tight and the campus is just great. Me and my family have fell in love with the place the past couple of times we have been there.”

“I’d say (to other recruits) you need to come on and get on board while you can,” Vahe said. “Don’t miss it and wait until it’s too late. We’re coming and have something to prove. It’s about to be a whole new ballgame from the University of Texas. We’re changing things in a big way.”

longhorn network was a disaster waiting to happen. yes the money was good, but they ostracized a lot of their support basis because of how exclusive it was. retarded decision all around. especially for the other big XII teams who didn't want a share in it.

Uh, are you referring to A&M? I'd say their decision not to accept a 20-80 split of the LHN has worked out incredibly well for them. A&M had more players (3) drafted in the first round than the entire Big 12 (2). We're extremely happy with how things have worked out so far.

probably the best thing about the longhorn network is the aggies leaving. i'm SO happy we don't have to play them anymore. they're like a bad girlfriend that you just want to dump and forget about. i'd be perfectly fine if the longhorns didn't play a&m in any sport ever again. probably the worst fan base ever. their obsession with UT is pretty pathetic.

even when they don't play UT for two years, they're still quick to compare their draft day with UT and no one else. bitter much? pathetic.

Where are you getting this 20-80 split from? I doubt that's based on anything credible. But who's really to say it wouldn't have worked out well for Aggie if they are part of the network but still in the SEC with Sumlin and co (assuming the SEC allowed them to keep the network affiliation)?

I remember hearing something around that figure (I don't recall the exact split, but I remember it was very unequal, along those lines). Maybe it would have worked out 'well' for A&M to take a place at the table for leftovers - but I think things are much better as they are. And we likely wouldn't be in the SEC if we agreed to that; our opposition to the LHN (including its broadcasting high school recruits' games, etc.) was one of the driving factors in our leaving the Big 12.

Yes, the immediate results these past 2 years are all we should use to evaluate the decision. Fantastic top-10 recruiting classes won't accomplish anything in the future. The $400-some-odd-million renovation to our stadium doesn't matter. Popularity exceeding every other school in the state won't make any long-term difference (especially among kids / eventual recruits). It wouldn't surprise me if you were one of the horde predicting A&M would get humiliated in its inaugural SEC season - and even then we acknowledged the possibility, but were looking to the long-term benefit. Now that we've already had some short-term success (especially compared to what many -including you- were predicting), and the future looks very promising for A&M, you want to focus on A&M winning 'only' 11 games that first season, winning 'only' the last two bowl games. You've always been and will always be a twit Blake. There's no point arguing with you.

Things worked out well forATM.

They have excitement, the dollars donors are shelling out. But as far as winning. It got a whole lot tougher.
They were not exactly dominating the Big 12 either so all in all it worked out well.

I just wished we could play them. It's pure stupidity not having a game that draws so much interest.

You remember hearing? Yeah, probably from someone on an internet chat room as equally uninformed as you are -- not exactly confidence inspiring as far the credibility of that assertion goes. I imagine the real number was probably much more equitable even considering UT's considerably stronger market value.

According to everything I read was Deloss Dodds had the idea about a network and got a feasibility study on the costs of developing one, he approached Dollar-Bill about going in 50/50 on costs and profits. A&M didn't think it would workout because of not enough programming, they were for starting a Big 12 network. When Texas announced it's partnership with ESPN and the dollars that were going to be involved, A&M wanted in but by then it was too late. That started the downward slop that resulted in the Aggsy moving to the SEC.

The network is now on the brink of becoming very profitable to both ESPN and the Longhorns and the Aggsy are about to be part of what looks like a very profitable SEC network. All is well, that ends well, except we no longer have a game with the ags and likely never will again. The bad blood between these two schools is at an all-time high, not only between alumni but also leadership has gotten into the fight.

I have a very good aggsy buddy who actually played for Jackie back in the late 80's. He is a director at a huge construction company and when he is hiring engineers or management the first thing he does is pull all the aps that list Texas and discards them. He refuses to work with a Longhorn in any way shape or form.

Interesting comments from Trent Dilfer on QB Quinten Dormady at Elite 11 the other weekend:

"His juice is about size and the fact that he’s a good athlete. As a sophomore, he was a really good player. With the injury, he’s just not together right now. He’s wildly inconsistent. George Whitfield uses a term I like — organized. He’s not organized with his movements right now. Doesn’t mean that he can’t be in three weeks or a month, it just wasn’t together.

If this thing was about height, weight, speed, athletic ceiling, he probably would have made it.

He has good upside. He has very good upside, but I would give a word of caution. Everyone gets jacked up about it. I see 50 kids a year who have great upside. There’s a lot of Dormady’s out there in terms of 6’3, 210 that can move that haven’t gotten it figured out yet."

Zach Gentry on His Decision to Join Texas

Head coach Charlie Strong and quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson are very familiar with what QB Zach Gentry brings to an offense. They saw first-hand what Gentry can do when he attended a quarterback camp at Louisville last summer.
Zach Gentry (http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=8&c=1&nid=7049180) is a four-star signal caller from Albuquerque (NM) Eldorado High School. The standout quarterback stands 6-foot-6, 232-pounds. He is very athletic - not for a guy with his size - but for any size. He has a short, compact delivery and can make every throw. But he can also make plays with his feet.
He's a player who impresses other recruits and could help sway some of the other 2015 targets on Texas' list. In short, Gentry is a potential game changer for Texas (http://texas.scout.com/) at the most critical position on the field. And now he's committed to being part of the Longhorn Nation.
Gentry has offers from Alabama (http://alabama.scout.com/),Arkansas (http://arkansas.scout.com/), Maryland (http://maryland.scout.com/), Nebraska (http://nebraska.scout.com/) and just about every other major program in America.
One of the most impressive things about Gentry is not that he can make all the throws but that he makes them look easy. He makes the game seem effortless and is comfortable throwing on the run from either direction.
He is a 6-foot-6 quarterback who moves around like he’s 6-foot-2 and will have a chance to compete for the starting job from the day he steps foot on campus.
”They offered me a couple of months ago,” Zach Gentry said. “I was very excited about that. They traveled fromLouisville (http://louisville.scout.com/) to Texas and for them to still think about me was a big deal. I wanted to check Texas out and reconnect with the staff and how Coach Watson deals with his players.
"And I fell in love with the campus, the facilities and everything about Texas. We kept the conversations going from that point on about twice a week or so. I had a great feeling about Texas ever since that visit.”
Gentry is down to earth and hasn't gotten carried away with being one of the nation's top QB prospects.
”A lot of the process has not hit me yet - even the offers," Gentry said. "But I think that’s good, because it has helped me maintain a level head.
“Being a quarterback at Texas is a big deal. I think it will hit me at some point, but it hasn’t yet.”
Gentry and his family are very close, and this was a family decision they are all proud of. It will allow Gentry to focus on trying to win a state championship during his senior season.
"It’s nice to get the weight off my shoulders,” Gentry said. “I don’t feel I rushed it. I made the best decision and feel great about it.
"It makes me feel that much better to get it out of the way and feel great about it. I can focus on my senior season and winning a state title and my family now knows the plan.”
When Gentry spoke to Texas head coach Charlie Strong (http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=8&c=1&nid=7485862), Gentry said he could hear Strong's excitement about his commitment.
”He was very excited, very elated - him and Coach Watson both,” Gentry said. “Coach Strong was very happy and told me I was their guy. Texas is on the rise, and I am going to help them change the program. It was nice to hear that from the head guy.”

"We've been talking about it a while and once the coach finally got in contact with me he told me he really liked my film from the start and he really wanted to meet me and get to know my personality and attributes that you can't really watch on film."

"He saw all of that (at practice) and told my coaches he was really excited and they were definitely going to offer me."

"We didn't really talk in person. I talked to him on the phone," Thomas said. "He told me he really likes my physicality and my toughness and the way I carry myself out there on the field. He told me I have a lot of good attributes that make me look like a Texas football player."

"Texas is definitely an option for me. It's one of the closest schools I have an offer from; probably the closest major school,” Thomas said. “That definitely makes them an option for me being that close and being the team that they are with their tradition."

"My family would support me wherever I go, but with schools definitely being closer would be a huge positive for them. I know I would like to still see them as much as possible and they'd still like to see me as much as possible so being a close school is definitely a huge plus."

"I've been talking to them about when they are all going to be in and when will be a good day to visit. I'm thinking sometime in June is a time he said would be good so I will be over there sometime around then," he said. "I really want to make a decision this summer pretty quickly, but it's probably going to take a little bit longer because all of the coaches won't be there at the same time at all the different schools so it will take me longer to get all the visits in."

Inside Texas mentioned in their report on Wittek that he was kicked out of USC at one point because of the charges that were being brought against him. I wonder if that delayed his coursework or if this is just an excuse to take attention away from his legal issues. Hoping Texas can get Settle and OL Matthew Burrell in Austin together at some point.

From what I've gathered around the web, Settle will most likely end up at Virginia or JUCO. Apparently he is HUGE grade risk. Whether or not that is true, I don't know. But it comes from fans and analysts from Virginia and the surrounding states.

Colt Barber (who crystal balled Burrell to Texas) says it seems more and more unlikely to happen. He would change his CB to either Penn State or Ohio State, but he don't know which one yet, so he's kind of "wait and see"-mode. It is worth remembering that Settle, Burrell and Jeff Holland all talked about attending the same college. To my knowledge, Texas is the only school all 3 have genuine interest in (all three have said they would like to make an official visit to Texas).

Meridian High School in Mississippi produces talent. Scout 100 safety C.J. Hampton signed with Ole Miss in 2014, quarterback J'Mar Smith is their top junior, and Daniel Crowell is a wide receiver to know in the 2016 class...
Daniel Crowell (http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=8&c=1&nid=7772969) had over 150 yards receiving and he scored two touchdowns Thursday night against West Point in a scrimmage game.
Mississippi State (http://mississippistate.scout.com/) is the only school showing interest in Crowell right now, but that is expected to change soon.
The 6-foot-1, 191 pound sophomore is strong and he has good speed down the field. He is thought of as one of the best athletes in the area.
There are a few schools he likes early.
"LSU (http://louisianastate.scout.com/), Ole Miss (http://mississippi.scout.com/), Mississippi State, and probably Georgia (http://georgia.scout.com/) are schools I am really interested in," said Crowell. "I am planning to go to camps at Alabama (http://alabama.scout.com/), Georgia, and Ole Miss this summer."
The 2016 wide receiver out of Meridian, Miss. grew up a fan of theTexas (http://texas.scout.com/) Longhorns. He has no ties to the school, but he has followed many of their top players.
"I have always liked Texas. I have watched them a lot and I have grown up watching guys like Ricky Williams, Colt McCoy, and Vince Young. They have had some great players."
Not many know much about Crowell yet, but those close to Meridian expect his first offer to come this summer, then many others to follow. Scout was at his school earlier this week and he is an impressive young man.

Brandon Jones is one of the top prospects in the class of 2016. The four star safety checks in from Nacogdoches (TX) and has offers from some of the biggest schools in the country.
Head coach Charlie Strong (http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=8&c=1&nid=7485862) and defensive coordinator Vance Bedford have a prove track record with defensive backs. One defensive back they have targeted for the 2016 class isBrandon Jones (http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=8&c=1&nid=7398168).
”My thoughts on the program is it’s a really good yet growing one that produces a lot of players to the next level and a team that gets better each year,” Jones said.
Jones grew up a fan of the Longhorns and he will be a top priority for defensive backs coach Chris Vaughn moving forward.
”The coaches do what they can to make it as much like home as possible and I really like that,” Jones said. “My relationship with the coaches is going great and still growing everyday. Very nice facilities and growing up with them being a favorite team I really enjoy Texas (http://texas.scout.com/)!”
Why is Jones so highly recruited?
Jones is fast and compact. He has great ball skills and is very physical. Jones has great burst and nice straight line speed.

"The visit went very well,” said a source close to Boyd. “He (Coach Vaughn) stayed for about four hours. He watched Kris practice and then went with Kris' position coach. I know the coaching staff had a great time with him."

"Kris really enjoyed it too,” added the source. “He thought a lot of Coach Vaughn coming in and spending all that time there. He loves Texas, as you know, but the fact of how interested they are in him and how much they show him they love him are very big in his book. That's something they need to keep up."

"I think he commits sometime during football season,” the source said. “He wants people to see him as a wide receiver too, not just as a defensive back and running back, but as a complete athlete."

More on JUCO QB Daniel Fitzwater (24/7). If he enrolls at his next school this summer, he'll have four years to play three:

“They (Texas) talked to my coach earlier in the week,” said Fitzwater. “I don’t have all the info on what was said, but I know that they're interested in me. I just know they have expressed interest and they want to learn more about me as a quarterback and then we’ll go from there.”

“I’m excited,” he said. “Being from Texas, it’s very exciting. I lived in Dallas, then Amarillo and then Houston, so if they offered it would be a good opportunity for a Texas boy to go back to Texas.”

2016 RB Sewo Olonilua of Humble Kingwood made an unofficial visit to Texas yesterday (24/7):

“It was great,” Olonilua told Horns247. “I stayed for about an hour and a half, took a tour through all the facilities and saw everything. What really stood out about that was their game field. You really get to see just how big the stadium really is when you are on that field.”

“I like how Coach (Charlie) Strong is rebuilding that team,” he said. “I hope to see them shock some people next season.”

“I will be camping there on June 1,” Olonilua said. “Coach (Chris) Vaughn said if I show out at the camp, then they will have an offer waiting for me. If that happened, it would put them way ahead of the pack.”

"We talk about once a week," Gragg said. "They are in a great place with me and I'm in a great place with them."

"We were really talking about things outside of football, relationships in life and things like that. Then we get into football."

"Just talking it over with my family, we haven't started to settle down and narrow things down just yet," he said. "Once the school year is over we will cut things down. I definitely want to get out and see some schools that I haven't seen yet. Then we will just go from there."

I really wasn't impressed with Olonilua. If Jamabo's going to outgrow the position at 6-2 206, what's Olonilua going to do at 6-2 212 as a sophomore? He also ran a 4.86 at the NFTC — he's got better acceleration on film than that time would suggest, but the top-end speed is certainly lacking. And he doesn't break as many tackles as I'd expect from a back his size.

Someone on Shaggy introduced me to Rakeem Boyd the other day — he's easily the best in-state back I've seen in the class out of the 15 or so I've watched so far.

I like that Strong and staff aren't letting the hype determine who they target. It's interesting to me that Martin is receiving all of these OOS offers, but A&M and UT aren't in any hurry at all. If you simply look at film and ignore the names, I like a handful of guys in the '16 class more. I have no problem with how UT is playing that one and it's already obvious they like RBs with size. Some film for everyone to view and want to hear who y'all like:

anderson was constantly looking for the inside cutback, great for punt returns, bad for runningbacks at the next level. olonilua was pretty meh to me, solid all around and fights for yards but nothing special about his game. Whaley was always trying to get to the edge, not a fan of that unless you have elite speed which he doesn't. Best of the bunch to me was boyd, making people miss on inside runs is something special that few backs do well ala shady, he also has great acceleration through the hole when it opens up, definitely my early favorite.

I would like to correct myself, Sewo is my personal favorite. I love big backs who can pound the ball and runs north/south more than east/west. I believe Boyd, Speights or Whaley are the best. I wouldn't mind Sewo as a compliment to one of the three others.

I found some quotes from VarsityPreps from Rakeem Boyd (who seems to be a favorite here), basically a Q&A:

- Who are you hearing from right now?
"Right now I'm gearing from Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas and UCLA."

- What schools are you interested in?
"I really like Texas a lot, but Alabama is my dream school."

- Do you have any camp plans for the summer?
"Just the Texas camp for now."

- Will distance be a factor in your recruitment?
"Not really, I'm from New Orleans, but I live in Houston. It won't be a factor."

my daughter is in the band at cibolo steele so i see all their games. if you know anything about justin stockton (going to tech) who ran a 4.3 then i can tell you that denley is just a shade slower than stockton was (my guess would be he runs a 4.4). he was not used much as a receiver so i can't say how good his hands are. he is not big but may grow (his dad is well over six feet). i would say he is about 5'8" or 5'9" at the end of last season and probably 170 or 165 soaking wet. but he is shiftier than stockton was. not tough between the tackles but very elusive and very hard to catch when he gets in the open field (whereas stockton was absolutely uncatchable). not sure how he'll get the ball next year as steele has some deep threats and their QB also runs a 4.4 so he will certainly get some reps as well. i'll keep you all posted on all cibolo steele prospects as next season starts. the positive is that steele has a brutal schedule (madison, judson, smithson valley, wagner and desoto as a non-district game) so i can even watch some other local prospects.

Really good-looking APB. Excellent feet, good burst and balance. He sets up a few of his runs really nicely. His testing scores are strange: He doesn't seem like he's got great top-end speed but like he's shifty as hell, yet he ran a respectable 4.65 40 but a 4.71 shuttle at the Houston NFTC. Was that the event that had some rain? I don't know how else to explain that shuttle. Measured 5-9 179 for those who are curious; 34.0 powerball and 34.4" vertical.

I don't usually copy/paste, but this is too much to summarize and it's the latest on QB Kyler Murray from 24/7. Interesting storyline now that Oregon has seen two QBs transfer. You're looking at a situation where Murray potentially starts at Oregon as a true frosh.

The Latest on Kyler Murray

May 28th may be a more interesting date than many Texas A&M fans had planned on.

Last month, Allen (Texas) quarterback Kyler Murray took an unofficial visit to Oregon. Shortly after the visit, Oregon offered two more quarterbacks in the 2015 class which appeared on the surface to indicate that the Ducks did not think that their chances with Murray were very good. In addition, there were rumors that Murray intended to announce his college choice in early May.

At that point in time, all signs indicated that Murray was headed to Texas A&M. Murray was the son of former A&M great Kevin Murray and the Aggies had recruited Murray very hard since offering him last June with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital leading the push (Spavital even used the ‘Swaggcopter’ to watch Murray against Plano West last season). Although Murray had visited a few other programs along the way (none of them more than twice), he had developed a tremendous relationship with Spavital and had visited A&M multiple times since being offered (including twice this spring). In addition, the Aggies ran virtually the same offense that Allen did.

By April, the Aggies had actively stopped recruiting other quarterbacks in the 2015 class. Murray and his family had basically told the A&M staff that they were on their way to Aggieland and A&M’s board at the position consisted of just one name: Kyler Murray.

However, within the past week or so, Murray’s decision started become increasingly foggy. Murray told Gigem247.com at the regional Elite 11 event that he wanted to make a decision in May and just a few days later the family announced that he would be indeed be making an announcement concerning his commitment on May 28.

Shortly thereafter, Murray tweeted that his mother's malignancy (she had been undergoing treatment for some time) was in remission. At about the same time, Gigem247.com learned that Murray had reached back out to the Oregon staff on his own accord. This came as something of a surprise to Oregon’s coaches, who did not believe that their chances with him were very good after his visit there last month. In fact, the Ducks’ staff had moved on which is why the reports came out from the Oregon side of things that Murray was headed to A&M.

Shortly thereafter, word filtered from the A&M staff that they were feeling less confident about their chances with Murray. Separate sources, who’ve also been in contact with Murray and his family, have also indicated that Oregon has creeped back into the picture in a big way.

In the days since Murray set a decision date, Oregon has announced that both of its backup quarterbacks were transferring which essentially left senior Marcus Mariota as the only scholarship quarterback on the roster until true freshman Morgan Mahalak arrives in the fall. They also have told Travis Waller, a quarterback from Anaheim (Calif.), that they would be looking at offering him but would be holding off until Murray announces a decision.

It’s become apparent just by watching Oregon’s latest roster moves that they feel better about landing Murray than did just weeks ago. From what we understand, the catalyst on Murray’s end in reaching back out to Oregon is potential playing time. All prospects want to come in and play right away but this takes higher precedence at the quarterback position.

Gigem247.com has learned that early enrollee and true freshman Kyle Allen is considered to be the leader to emerge with the starting job at A&M coming out of spring practice ahead of sophomore Kenny Hill. If Allen started the 2014 season and Murray enrolled at A&M, Murray would be facing an entrenched starter at the position (always a tough proposition for a quarterback) and perhaps be a backup for the 2015 and 2016 seasons and perhaps even the 2017 season if Allen did not turn pro early. In contrast, as of right now, Murray could go to Oregon and face minimal competition to be the starter as a freshman.

It also should be noted that high level Oregon sources still don’t feel overly confident in landing Murray. We’re told their staff is basically to the point where they’re saying, “if he comes, great, we’d love to have him,” but they are not jumping up and down as if they’ve got this one in the bag. Additionally, Oregon inquired about Waller as recently as Sunday.

More than anything else, it appears that A&M’s current depth chart is driving Murray to consider the Ducks much more heavily than he previously did even a couple of weeks ago (something that we have confirmed that via people close to the family). As a result, Oregon has now become a real factor in the race for Murray’s signature. May 28 now stands less as a coronation for A&M’s next great quarterback commitment as opposed to being a real date of decision to see if the Aggies can land the prized 247sports.com five star recruit. A new name Texas is looking at is JUCO DT Deonte Reynolds of Contra Costa CC in San Pablo, CA (teammate of JUCO DE Takkarist McKinley). Here are some quotes from his coach:

“They (Texas) said that they really like what they've seen from Deonte,” said Carter. “So they’re in the process of evaluating him. He’s an absolute giant and a beast on the line. He currently stands 6-feet-6-inches and is right at 335 pounds. He’s a big dude with a lot of upside. He’s very physical."

“Right now he holds offers from Arizona State, Maryland, Oklahoma, Boise State and Kansas State,” Carter added. “We’ll see what Texas has to say, but hopefully they’ll offer him. I know they like what they’ve seen so far, so we’ll see where that goes.”

GREAT READ on CHARLIE STRONG with Bergeron Update

One of the byproducts of a head football coach who has a full sweat going by 6 am every day (because of a 6-mile run at 4:30 am), is the coach having a constant presence in a 6 am study hall for roughly a dozen players last semester.
So when the entire team wasn’t working out at 6 am, there were heads in books at 6 am, and Strong and his coaches were right there with them.
With finals completed last week, the results of those 6 am study halls and a coaching staff willing to invest that same time, side by side, appear to have paid off in all the right ways.

Players considered on the fence as far as buy-in dating to last year – players whose names are well known because of previous academic or off-field turbulence – Daje Johnson, Desmond Harrison, Kennedy Estelle and Jalen Overstreet – all turned in strong spring semesters.
And Joe Bergeron, who may have questioned authority at every turn in the past, now seems to realize Charlie Strong and his coaching staff aren’t just talk. The word is Bergeron has so turned around his attitude and approach - to everything - after last semester that coaches expect him to be a team leader.
That may sound like fluff. But Bergeron had a reputation as a locker room lawyer, a guy whose anger might cause his mouth to get him trouble - especially with coaches.
The sense when Bergeron was basically excused from football by Strong to focus on his academics during spring football was Bergeron could bolt. Transfer. Even though he’s going into his senior year.
Strong wasn’t going to let that happen. Not if Bergeron truly wanted to listen. And Bergeron wanted to listen.

Strong has said he can’t count how many times he’s had black players in his coaching career who were not used to male authority - away from home - because those players were raised in a single-parent household by their mother.
Getting those players to understand why they might resist men telling them what to do is another matter. And that’s why Strong himself spends so much time around his players, pushing, prodding, dictating, teasing, laughing but ultimately listening.
They have to know he cares. He and his staff, led by strength coach Pat Moorer, are going to move the finish line in terms of grind, sweat and expectations. But because of the personal investment by Strong and his staff, the players know all the tough love is to improve a kid’s life. Not his football. His life.
Strong doesn’t harp on making sure kids are in class and paying attention as some form of punishment (when other students at UT may skip classes on a whim).
At his other coaching stops - at Notre Dame and South Carolina under Lou Holtz, at Florida under Ron Zook and Urban Meyer and as head coach at Louisville - players eventually find out Strong’s mission is a personal one to give players the tools for a successful life - whether or not they ever make it as a football player.

And Strong doesn’t let up. The 6 am study halls aren’t a shitty part of the job for him. It’s the most important part of the job for him. When Shawn Watson told me Strong “parents” his players. This is the tough love aspect of the job where Strong wins the hearts and minds of his players by going into their personal foxhole.
No one wants to go to a 6 am study hall. But in that time before sunrise, player and coach are getting to know each other in ways neither expected. The player’s bullshit excuses are exposed for what they are. But if the coach exposes it in a way that pushes, pulls but ultimately praises the player, then the player knows it’s real.
In the end, that player will go through hell for that coach. And if he ultimately makes a decision that leads to failure, that player will know he not only failed himself, but he failed someone who went all in to help improve that player’s life. Not his football. His life.

I absolutely love Strong's approach, I really hope it translates to success as he could be here for several years and become the next great coach at Texas.

Update on Ennis DE James Lockhart

If Mack Brown and his staff were still in charge at Texas, four-star defensive end James Lockhart (Ennis, Texas) thinks things would be drastically different between he and the Longhorns.
As it stands, UT has a commitment from rising star Charles Omenihu (Rowlett, Texas) and is in the market for at least one, possibly two more defensive ends.
But with plenty of attention spreading to other prospects (Takkarist McKinley and Motekiai Maile), Lockhart doesn’t feel like he’s receiving the attention he believes he should warrant if Texas is serious about him.

“The relationship with the new coaching staff is a little different,” he said. “I know when Mack Brown was there they recruited me harder than they do now. I know last week they were in town. They came and watched me practice. But as far as talking with them, I talk to them very rarely now.”
The reason for this is lost on Lockhart, the No. 75 player in the country, who stands 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds.
“I really don’t know. I have met Coach [Charlie] Strong during the offseason,” he said. “He came and met me, he and Coach [Bruce] Chambers. I hear other commitments from UT say that the coaching staff loves me, and they think highly of me, but I really don’t talk to them much. I used to talk to them like crazy.”
The good news for Texas is Lockhart hasn’t begun to narrow things down yet, and the Longhorns are still very much in the mix.

“I know they have a defensive end committed there already,” he said. “I’m not trying to brag but he’s not ranked as high as I am. I don’t know what the case is. I don’t know if they feel like they can’t get me. I don’t know. I’m interested in Texas. I haven’t narrowed anything down. But it’s just if they aren’t going to show me interest I will move on. I have other options.”
And not just any options but life-changing options. In addition to Texas, Lockhart has offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas State, Miami, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Penn State, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Washington State.
“All the smaller schools are starting to back off and the bigger schools are taking a toll,” Lockhart said. “I talk to Alabama a lot, A&M a lot, Florida State a lot. All these big time schools are starting to come in and recruit me really hard.”
All of this attention has only made Lockhart hungrier to be the best. He’s not satisfied with being the top-rated DE in the state of Texas, he wants that No. 1 spot in the country (currently 10th).
“I’m not satisfied. To tell you the truth, I don’t think I’m at my full potential right now,” he said. “I see so much room for improvement. I just think I’m decent. I’m very critical and hard on myself.

“Let’s talk numbers real quick. Last season I had 122 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 21 QB pressures and three forced fumbles. To tell you the truth, that’s really nothing. I’m going to go out and work harder than I ever have and try to go out with a bang my senior year.”
Perhaps that will entice Texas to go after him harder than he says it is. Or not. Either way, Lockhart is all in on trying to become the best player he can be.
And while he hasn’t narrowed anything down just yet, he gets the sense that he’ll do so sooner rather than later considering all the commitments that are happening right now.
“It’s hard. I want to take my official visits,” he said. “But, at the same time, once football season is here, I’m really gambling. Really I’m gambling as it is right now. The end of your junior season is when people start to commit. On top of that, knock on wood, but if I get hurt then there goes a bunch of offers. I’m not doing this intentionally. I really don’t have an idea where I want to go. I have a general idea. But I want to take some visits.”
That includes another visit to UT and then to “Arkansas, Alabama and Florida State.”
“I’ll try to commit in August,” he said. “If not I’ll commit when I play in an All-American game.”

Update on Cy Ridge WR Kemah Siverand

There’s been plenty of Internet fodder about four-star wide receiver Kemah Siverand (Houston/Cy Ridge) and his desire to stay in Texas for college, particularly at either UT or Texas A&M.
When asked to confirm or dispel those rumors, Siverand answered like a veteran recruit who’d been through this a time or two before.
“I don’t want to say that there’s no truth,” he said. “Texas and Texas A&M, I like both schools but there are things I have to look at. You can’t base your decision on just making it in your home state. There are plenty of opportunities outside of the state too.”
So there’s one way of looking at it. Both rivals are in good shape but there could be opportunities outside of the state’s borders that interest him enough.
However, when pressed a bit more about his comfort level with leaving the state of Texas for college you get a sense for where his allegiances really are.

“I don’t have any issues, really,” he said of going out of state for school. “But you never know how that experience is going to be once you actually get to that school. I could enjoy a visit but it’s not always going to be like that.”
Texas, for one, is making it hard for him to leave. As one of the Longhorns main receiving targets, UT is putting a full court press on the 6-foot, 180-pound playmaker. But they are not alone.
“Texas came by last week on Wednesday,” he said. “That day, Arizona State came, Texas A&M was there, TCU was there, and Maryland was there too. All these fingers are pointed at you. You can’t please everybody. It’s hard dealing with all that attention.”
Siverand said he’s been to Texas and Texas A&M too many times to count. He mentioned he’d visited UT’s campus at least five times, including twice for Texas Relays and then at least three or four unofficial visits with his parents and coaches. But there are other schools he needs to visit before he really begins to narrow things down.
“As far as new schools, I just got offered by Washington,” he said. “That went pretty well when I spoke to the coaches. Like I’ve said, I’m just trying to build relationships with these coaches. For the most part I just need to try and get up there and see what the feel is. If I’m going to spend the next three to five years of my life somewhere it has to feel like home.
“I’ve already been to all the schools here in the state except for Baylor and TCU. Baylor just mentioned to me that they wouldn’t be recruiting me because they are stacked at receiver. I’m going to have to visit Texas Tech too. I haven’t visited them yet.”
Aside from a pass-heavy offense, Siverand is hoping to find a coaching staff he can feel at home with and one he feels will be there through the entirety of his career.
“I need a coaching staff that’s going to stay there for my time,” he said. “Because once that coaching staff leaves everything messes up because I wont have the same recruiter, the same position coach, etc. A lot of things get messed up.”
In addition to Texas, Texas A&M, and Washington, Siverand has offers from Arkansas, Louisville, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, and Wake Forest.

Update on JUCO DE Takkarist McKinley of Contra Costa CC in San Pablo, CA (OrangeBloods):

"Each school that offers me, I try to do my research on them, see how it fits me. Out of high school I signed with Cal and I kind of rushed into things. I want to take it slow, see what every school has to say, take my time with it."

"Cal was close to home, 10, 15 minutes. I felt like Cal was a great fit for me. I was from a small-town school, they offered me and five minutes later I called them back to commit. Now I want to take things slower."

"Those are Big 12 schools. Texas has an amazing coaching staff with coach Strong and coach Bedford, all of them. I feel he's going to change Texas back to their national championship days. At Louisville, he had one of the best defensive ends picked in first round of the draft. If he can progress a quarterback into a first-round draft pick, he's doing something right," McKinley said. "At Oklahoma, that's just Oklahoma. They beat Bama in their bowl game. To get offered by them is an amazing experience."

"That's kind of what I ask the coaches, what about your depth chart. Are there any seniors leaving or any upcoming freshman? I know at Texas they have Cedric Reed, by the time I go there he would be gone, so it would be a battle," McKinley said. "I don't want anything to be given to me, I'll have to earn my spot. All I want is an opportunity and I think I'd get that at Texas."

The only thing that surprises me, and what's unique about this situation, is Rowlett going along with it. You don't really see a public de-commitment unless it's National Signing Day which makes me think this will amount to nothing and the UT coaches have been assured all is well. Recruiting with Strong has been shaky to say the least.

I'm a happy camper based on the evidence we have to work with. I think the overall opinion of Strong so far is skewed because he's not going to operate like Mack. He's going to let commitments take visits because that's the real college football recruiting world. It isn't this marriage, or two-way street, that Mack made it out to be and we have to get out of that mindset.

He's also selling a product made of what Mack left behind. Reading the various message boards the past few months has shown me how quickly we've forgotten the dismal shape the team has been in the past 4+ years. This team started Case last year...sell that to a recruit, Charlie. It's just unrealistic to think he'd set the recruiting trail on fire right out of the gate. Other than two miracles like Auburn experienced last season, it's going to take time to right the ship.

I think keeping Gentry from Alabama is a small victory that could be an indication of what this staff is capable of if they can get a solid season under their belt. I take solace in the fact that the new regime is recruiting for a system, identifying the proper talent for that system and working their asses off to acquire that talent. I can't say the same for the old staff.

Aggy will still find a way to disappoint, as they're still Aggy....

Problem is that Murray doesn't play defense

Don't be too quick with that one, I don't see a 5'10 - 5'11 kid making it as a QB so he might want to keep his DB skills up.
