William Wilkerson at Scout says LB Anthony Wheeler has a new leader. Since OU was the leader and he was just here, I'd guess it's us.

Wheeler said Texas moved up to co-leader along with OU

:lol...and you expected them to be world beaters the spring after they gut the staff and start over?

No I don't expect them to be world beaters, on the contrary I expect a 6-5 type season because I believe the conference it better than it was last season and we're basically without a serviceable QB. I just don't believe in Ash at all and a USC program dropout doesn't seem like a guy who will light it up all of a sudden.

I think Swoopes has a chance to be good in 2016, but we're proper fucked for 2014 as far as I can tell.

24/7 reporting the Texas staff will remain in Austin this week instead of hitting the road to recruit. They want to stick around and put their stamp on spring ball by letting all of the players know where they stand going into summer workouts. It's an unusual strategy to not start recruiting immediately once the spring evaluation period starts, but most high schools don't begin spring practice until May anyway. They'll be ready to go next week.

"The spring game was great,” Mykel Jones said. “The team looked good and they have room to get even better which Coach [Charlie] Strong will do. I spent a lot of time with coach Strong and he was great, showing us good hospitality. Like I said I talked to coach Strong and coach [Chris] Vaughn and they all loved me and said they need athletes like me to help get the program to that next level.”

”The best part of the trip was spending time with coach Strong and they are definitely in my top five as of now,” Jones said.

I think if the horns keep it more a basic smash mouth run geared offense by not asking the QB to do too much, I would expect them to win 9 or 10 and be in the hunt for the conference title.

just too much talent.

Even with McCoy at QB last year, UT was able to control the clock when Brown/Gray got going.

Watson makes it his priority to win time of possession, so interested to see how that will factor in along with a much improved defense.

2016 OL Greg Little of Allen talks about his visit to UT for the spring game (OrangeBloods):

"It was a blast," said Little about the Texas Spring Game. "I like Coach Wickline a lot; great coach, great man [that] has a lot of character. That's what kind of attracted me to Texas today."

"He sends guys to the league," Little stated about Texas' offensive line coach. "He's very honest and real with you. I like that about him."

"Great fans, good coach, and good offensive line coach because that's someone I'm going to be with a lot," responded Little about what factors he's looking for in his potential school. "Head coach is cool, but the offensive line coach… that's who I want to get to know the most."

"Pretty regularly," said Little, who mentioned Chris Rumph and Wickline as the coaches he talks to the most, about how much he and Texas communicate. "I try to give them a call once a week so seeing how things are going, they keep me updated. Just talking about how they like me, asking me how I've been, the small things."

"I watch my position like left tackle, right tackle and sometimes what the guards do because I never know what I'm going to play in college," he said. "So, that's what I like to watch."

"Honestly, I haven't narrowed it down," Little responded about his college choices. "I'm just trying to soak it all in. I'll probably narrow it down at the end of my next season."

"Coach Strong," stated Little in response to his impression of the Texas program. "Just what he's going to do, his discipline and his attention to details and all the things like that."

Interesting post from the A&M 24/7 site:

"We’d be lying if we said the recent Aggie Football arrests are not affecting recruiting. Truthfully, there are families concerned about the discipline issues that have occurred this spring and those incidents have also allowed competing schools to use that against A&M when recruiting players like 5-star DT Daylon Mack.

This explains some of the recent Tweets from the Gladewater defender.

We’re not alluding to a decommitment from the All-American but it’s worth noting that the month of May is always a time in the recruiting cycle where you see kids second guess their commitment at times. That’s because colleges are doing their due diligence during the spring recruiting period and prospects that enjoy the process tend to get excited about all the attention again.

The Texas staff has reached out to the Mack family and want him to visit soon. This is something that Daylon may entertain over the next few months so we wanted to give you all the heads up so it doesn’t catch anyone off guard if he does make it down to Austin.

Many people close to Daylon’s recruitment, including family members, feel like A&M will still be his ultimate destination. However, it’s safe to say that Mack will be evaluating the Aggie defense closely next season, and depending on how things go, could affect where things stand in a positive or negative way."

From 24/7, a source told them CB Kris Boyd may have committed on Saturday had he showed up in Austin:

“Texas is in a good place for him,” said the source. “There was a chance that he just went ahead and shut everything down and committed. He would like to get committed and enrolled early. He’s focusing on choosing his best bet.”

“He was very upset that he wasn’t able to go to the spring game.”

Update on DE/LB Bo Wallace of River Ridge, LA after visiting Austin for the spring game (24/7):

“Things with my recruitment have changed after visiting (Texas),” Wallace said. “I’m still thinking so I haven’t said anything yet publicly, but they have changed now. I’m just keeping things to myself right now until I see more, but there’s no doubt that the visit to Texas changed things."

“It helped them a lot,” he added. “The campus was beautiful and the coaching staff was very cool.”

“Oh it’s going to be a while,” Wallace told Horns247. “I’m waiting until signing day.”

Texas's pro day did not go well, as the offense struggled throughout the day and were unimpressive. In fact, A&M commit and current Tech target Jordan Davis left at halftime it was so bad. This may be good for the Red Raiders in picking up some in-state talent from the Longhorns.

Alternative school in almost all Texas HS means he Fd up. And probably badly, like this probably was not his first time in trouble. An academic student can kiss an academic school goodbye with this on record.

“Nothing is really going on right now,” Burt said. “I’m not taking any visits right now or anything. Texas is still the leader and I’m just thinking it over. Behind them is Florida State, Auburn, Florida and Miami, but they [Texas] are up there right now.”

“We spoke for a while,” said Burt. “We just talked about some different stuff, but he (Coach Vaughn) told me that he would be coming out to see me the second week of our spring ball. They want me to get back down to Austin, too. I’m not sure when it will be, but probably over the summer or an official.”

Many recruits commented on Davis on pay sites and a common theme is he talked about DJ and not wanting a grind from multiple sources. I also heard comments of the sort from guys sitting with recruits as it was apparently discssued amongst many of them - so not just going off an interview. Guess the impression some guys got is he is not somebody excited to put in hard work. Who knows, they could be biased in truth.

That said I find the QB comment odd being A&M faces an equally dire situation at QB. Swoopes' performance wasn't that meaningful being he will be 3rd / 4th string when season starts - but certainly agree if I was recruit it wouldn't have gotten me fired up.

“Coach (Joe) Wickline told me that he’s going to come see me then,” Akamnonu told Horns247. “He will be up here on Tuesday to watch me practice and to visit with me and my coaches. I’m really looking forward to that and I want to show him just what I can do.”

“I’m not going to lie, that would be a big deal,” he said. “A very big deal if they offered. It would shoot them right up to the top. That would be great.”

“Most importantly I want to go somewhere with an engineering program,” said Akamnonu. “I want to go to a place that has one of the best engineering programs out there actually. A good education is the biggest thing for me. Besides that though, just a place that I know I’ll get good coaching on the offensive line and a place that has talented recruits. All of that combined is what I want."

“I plan to make my decision sometime this summer,” he added. “I want to get it out of the way so I don’t have to worry about anything going into my senior year.”

“If they offered me I would talk to my parents about it and then probably go ahead and commit,” he told Horns247. “I’m being recruited by Texas A&M, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, Colorado and Toledo too, but Texas is my favorite.”

“I love the campus and the fans and the colors are great,” Galitz said. “The coaching staff is probably one of the best staffs I’ve ever been around. I like Coach (Charlie) Strong’s new rules, too. It’s just that the program is one of the best in the nation. They’ve had a lot of success and they win, which is what I like.”

Another name to look out for on the OL is Connor Williams of Coppell. He was just offered by OU this morning and attended the spring game on Saturday (24/7):

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/2021811/#highlights/124964379

“I thought the visit (to Texas) was really neat,” Williams said. “It was a cool school and a lot of people were there. They have a good fan base there. And it looks like they have a good team."

He continued, “I visited with Coach (Joe) Wickline for a few minutes. He asked me my weight and said that I looked good. He wants to get a chance and come up and see me within a few weeks.”

“Well I have seven offers and OU and Michigan are coming soon to watch me,” he said. “I’m really looking for a good school with good academics and a good football team.”

“I haven’t put together a schedule for the summer, but I know I am going to try and make a Texas camp and a Stanford camp,” he said.

Think that's putting it lightly. He's already been taking visits and talking to other schools regularly for months ie Auburn, LSU, etc. And now he removed his 'A&M commit' from his online profile. He also told Inside Texas he is not "100% committed". The distancing seems to be getting progressively stronger.

Coach Watson did end up making contact with JUCO QB Pat Thomas. I'd say the staff isn't too confident in Ash's health or Swoopes' development if they accept two transfers at QB. Quotes from Thomas (OrangeBloods):

"Yeah, they did. Coach (Shawn) Watson reached out to me the day before yesterday," Thomas said. "Just basically that they finished spring ball and they're evaluating the quarterbacks they have and feel like they need to bring in another QB. He told me of all the guys he evaluated I was the best prospect. He was just asking me my situation about when I'm trying to make a decision."

"Actually, I was supposed to graduate in December but I ended up having to take two more classes. I was done in winter quarter about February," he stated. "I initially signed with UAB but they had a coaching change and I got released."

"Initially during my recruiting it was, but once I signed with UAB they stopped," responded Thomas about a lot of schools contacting him. "I just took a visit to Louisville last week. Right now, that is my No. 1 school. I think this is where that came from - when I visited Louisville the Texas staff found out. Right now the timing is urgent. I'm not sure if they want to make it urgent. Texas just came out of nowhere in the last few days. I've been open to everyone. I've heard from some smaller schools. I did just take a visit to Louisville and they are no. 1. But he (Watson) was telling me they'd meet with the coaching staff and decide quickly about offering me or bringing me in for a visit."

"One thing I was telling coach Watson: I'm not a high school player," said Thomas. "I'm coming out of a JUCO and things are more urgent. I'm not going to pick a school just for the name. I basically haven't had enough time with anyone from Texas. From when I talked to Coach Watson, no one (other schools) else has reached out to me. It's a big possibility that Texas is interested but nothing is official about an offer or visit yet. I felt like they were really interested."

"Competing with everyone isn't a thing I'm worried about," the Georgia prospect said. "The thing is right now I'm trying to get the ball rolling and get in school which is why I want to decide in May. If Texas comes in the picture right now, they have to offer me more than what Louisville can right now - coming in and being able to compete, and play, and get the starting position at quarterback. I watched some of the Spring Game. I can compete right away. I'm going from UAB a smaller school to a bigger school. Originally I felt like I should be at a bigger school, but it didn't happen that way. I want to take advantage of that now. Texas came out of nowhere. If Texas is really interested in me, they have to show me that as well. And I told Coach Watson that and he said he'd get back to me. Honestly, they have to make a move before Louisville because I'm ready to sign with Louisville."

Texas is obviously back on his radar and there's a loooooong way to go before even discussing him being a Longhorn, but Coach Rumph recruiting him is starting to remind me of Coach Bo recruiting Malcom (and Rumph is better than Bo). I can't wait to see how this unfolds. Just Mack de-committing from A&M has potential to affect a handful of others, so it will make the 2015 cycle more exciting. Right now he strikes me as that kid who ends up signing with the hot team.

Another thing on Twitter that stood out was this tweet:

But I know enough to know the answer to those question-style teases is "Yes" 90% of the time.

Finally, Kyler Murray tweeted "May 1st," which, if it's recruiting-related, is probably when he'll make his decision.

Yep. If he makes a quick flip before the season, it wouldn't surprise me if he flipped once more before NSD. He's going to end up with the flavor of the month, which may not be Alabama or A&M after this season. (Not that we will be either.)

From the article on LB Anthony Wheeler (Rivals):

"It's (the top five) pretty much still intact," Wheeler said. "It's pretty much the same. I'm just trying to wait to get about three or four more offers and visit other schools also."

"OU is standing out right now," Wheeler said. "It was just when I went over there I had a good sync with them, a good connection with the coaches and I got to talk to a few of the former players, and I got to talk to a true freshman who got a lot of playing time. He had a great freshman career. I just liked the process over there."

"Right now it's probably been Texas, OU and Baylor," Wheeler said. "They've been hitting me up on Twitter and have been telling me to call them. I've been talking to coach Strong probably about every week and talking to coach Kish from OU on Twitter about every week, and I've been talking with coach Gush from Baylor every week also."

"I know for sure I'm going to try and go down to Ole Miss during the summer and Alabama and probably get up to Michigan," Wheeler said.

"I'd like a Notre Dame, LSU, and Stanford offer," Wheeler said.

"My thought process would probably be just a good educational school, a good facility, a good family atmosphere," Wheeler said. "And I'll just see how my family feels about it and how I feel about it, about the coaches and the players welcoming the new freshmen."

I wanted to get a picture of him but I was hesitant because I he just gives you that uneasy feeling...like he might take the phone from you and shove it up your ass. Nice quotes from OL Elijah Rodriguez of Cypress Creek who Texas picked up late in 2014 (OrangeBloods):

"It was a very hard decision," Rodriguez said about changing his commitment from Colorado to Texas. "It took a lot of prayer and thought. I never expected UT to come through with an offer with the coaching change and everything. It was a huge blessing. A few of the major reasons were: I get to be closer to home; UT has been my dream school ever since I've been a little kid… whenever they called me I was ecstatic about it. Once I committed to Colorado, I didn't want to switch because when I tell someone I want to do something, I want to stick with that. I just felt like for my future UT would be the best option. From the academic standpoint, I want to be a mechanical engineer and hopefully get into the oil industry, so it would be great to have a degree from Texas. My family has gone to school here. My grandpa played football on the team way back when, and my brother is going to walk on the football team so I get to play with him. He's going to do probably center or guard."

"I've been working out hard and doing everything I'm making sure I finish off strong with my grades," he said. "Sometimes you have to fight off "senioritis" a little bit. Thank God I've been doing a decent job at that. I'm so excited. I'm nervous too because I know it's going to be a lot of hard work, but I'm really excited to be a part of it. I've been hearing a lot of great things about what they're doing here with Coach Strong, and I'm so excited to be a part of that. Every time I'm working out I'm like, 'Should I do this extra rep? I'm going to UT next year I have to do the extra rep.' So, I keep that in my mind."

"I've gained about 10 pounds. I weigh 290 now. They said just gain as much weight as I can muscle-wise and stay fast and athletic. I'm going to do my job, very coachable, always want to be the best. I'm going to do whatever I can to be a leader."

Update on DT/DE Sterling Johnson of Clayton, NC ( 24/7):

“I talked to Coach (Chris) Rumph last week. He’s a good guy and he is a funny person,” Johnson said. “We talked about how the workouts were coming and how the defense was doing. They kind of want me to be like Jackson Jeffcoat."

“(Texas) is definitely important to me,” he added. “So far my leader is Tennessee, but Texas, I’m definitely going to give them a hard look."

“First of all, everything is bigger in Texas and that includes football and how everyone there takes it a lot more serious,” Johnson said. “The coaching staff is really good. I feel like Coach Strong is going to lead them to at least nine if not ten wins this year, easily. I feel like their defense is going to be better back to where it was before they hit their decline.”

“I’m trying to get out to Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, Ole Miss, Texas, Florida, Florida State and back down to Alabama,” he said. “I’m not quite sure when I’ll visit Texas, but it will be during the summer for sure."

“I’m looking for a couple more schools to offer me and I will take a couple more visits. Then I will make a decision around the fall sometime. I’m hoping Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M come through with an offer.”

“I expect some coaches will be coming by pretty soon, but usually when schools come by it's usually by surprise. I don’t know until that day that they are coming,” Daniels said. “I’m going to do the majority of my visits during the summer.”

“I haven’t received any calls yet, but I talked to Coach (Charlie) Strong, Coach (Bruce) Chambers and Coach (Chris) Rumph a few times,” Daniels said. “I think the last time was probably about two weeks ago."

“They just told me about how much they want me and how I’m a perfect fit for UT. They were just keeping it into my ear.”

“I have a pretty good relationship with Coach Rumph. He’s really cool,” Daniels said. “He seems like a very aggressive coach, but he also showed me how that if I come to UT that I don’t have to come to him for just academics or just for football, he said I could come to him for anything and any time I need him."

“That really did something for me,” he added. “I like when coaches want to deal with not just your football life with somebody, but also a personal life.”

“As of now, all of the schools have my attention right now,” he said. “It’s just the simple fact that the schools that I visited I am really impressed with.”

"Hopefully after the Texas and Baylor swing I'll be able to see the schools I can really see myself playing for, and recycle through that top six or five and narrow it down to three and make a choice."

Locksley also told 24/7, that he would like to make his decision before his senior season begins.

No. I saw a free article earlier today. I did see an "offer" from Scout a few days ago, about paying for one month ($5) and get two more months for free. I don't know if the offer is still out there, but you could give it a try.

I'm considering taken the offer. From my understanding, ever since Wilkerson got hired, their quality has risen. My only "problem" is that it doesn't seem like they have in-depth articles. All the articles seems short. Also, I don't know what they have to offer outside of the recruiting updates. That's one of the reasons why I like 24/7 with all their "Daily 5" and "2-4-7" articles. Great reads.

Also, they are currently leaning towards both RB Daje Johnson and RB Joe Bergeron being unable to recover from their academic issues leaving them ineligible for 2014.

Update from a source close to CB Holton Hill on where things are with his recruitment (24/7):

“I think it’s just a matter of time,” said the source. “When he talks about Texas, he really talks about them highly, a lot more than any other school. He talks about other schools too, don’t get me wrong, but he’s not as enthusiastic about them as he is about Texas."

“It’s going to be either Texas or the Aggies, but at this point I think he’s all Texas,” the source added. “Based on conversations with him, Texas is going to be tough for anyone else to beat.”

“They've always been my favorite but now all these other schools are offering me,” he added. “They’ve been my childhood favorite, you know? Other big schools keep offering though and I’m almost ready to shut it down and be done with the recruiting process.”

“I think at this point I pretty much know where I’m going,” he said. “It could change if they do, but I really don’t know. I do know that this summer I'll be committing to the best football program that is going to be 100-percent with me.”

I'm a bit surprised that Texas went with Orakpo to a DT. I would probably go with Casey Hampton (Big-12 DPOY, 5 time Pro Bowler, 2 time SB champion etc.), but he is probably to old for the recruits to really know who he is. Henry Melton maybe? I don't know if Lamarr Houston is a guy that the recruits wants to be compared to this way, since he doesn't have all these different awards. He's a damn good player though!

Per his Twitter, UT saw QB Kai Locksley today.

I'm really starting to hope that he will be Texas' QB for this class. If Texas goes with two QB's, throw in Dormady or Agnew as the second.

I also like that the staff is paying Madubuike some attention. I really like that guy.

I'm glad the staff is doing their due diligence but he is either really undersized or there are some huge juco linemen out there.

If the chatter around Dormady is warranted, it doesn't seem likely we'd get both him and Locksley. He's going to have a lot of options where he may not have a competitor in the same class.

Update on DE Keisean Lucier-South of Orange, CA (24/7):

“I want to take an unofficial visit there this summer,” said Lucier-South. “I’m not sure exactly when yet, but I’m trying to set something up for the summer time. If everything goes well I might do an official later. I really don’t know honestly, but I like Texas a lot. They're up high on my list.”

“We talk probably every two weeks,” he said. “We have a great relationship. He’s a great man and he always keeps it real with me. I love the coaching staff there in general, but especially Coach Rumph.”

“Texas is just a great football school,” Lucier-South told Horns247. “They have a great tradition there and they’re always playing some of the best teams. I like them a lot.”

Quotes from DT/DE Sterling Johnson of Clayton, NC (24/7):

“We last spoke about two weeks ago,” said Johnson. “We actually talk about three or four times a month, but this last time Coach Rumph was telling me how much they wanted me. They have already offered and they’re a school I like a lot, so it was good hearing that.”

“I really like the mindset that Coach Strong has,” he said. “Plus, there have been some great defensive linemen to come through the University of Texas.”

“I’m planning on visiting sometime this summer,” Johnson told Horns247. “It won’t be for a camp, just a straight up visit. I’ll be looking forward to it. I want to see what kind of quality education they offer and get a chance to really meet the coaches and people there.”

The coach of JUCO DE Takkarist McKinley gives an update on his recruitment (24/7):

“His recruitment is really picking up,” said Carter. “We’re seeing a lot of schools come in and they’re all very interested. Obviously Texas has offered and they’re very interested in him, along with many others.”

"He likes them (Texas) a lot,” Carter said. “We have some familiarity with Desmond Harrison going there, even though it’s a new staff. But this staff really likes him and he likes them. He’s heard many, many good things about what Texas has to offer. He’s actually trying to set something up to visit sometime this fall. That’s still all in the works.”

“Takk is going into this with an open mind,” said Carter. “He’s going to have a lot more options this go around. He does already actually. I wouldn’t say anyone has the lead right now, but a couple of schools, including Texas, are on his mind.”

that's because the usfl had their draft first and took all the top prospects first.

I remember that draft. The biggest story from that for Texas fans was Mossey Cade being accused of raping a girl. Don't know what the legal outcome was but it destroyed his NFL career before it ever got off the ground.

One of the posters over at 24/7 knows one of the coaches at Shreveport. He says that Texas is the school that Tillery is in most contact with. Texas talks with him more than Notre Dame does, where he is committed. He also says that Texas is more involved than anybody thinks. This could be one to watch down the stretch.
