Texas defensive line will have a slight drop off next year but not by much. Vasser will bring some excellent upper-class talent to an already talented Dline. I don't see where Texas will have much of a drop overall on defense, even with losing both Brown and Reed we still bring back 4 solid DTs in Jackson, Ridgeway, Boyette and Nelson and we bring back Shiro Davis, Nashon Hughes, and Caleb Bluiett.

Linebacker position will lose Tevin Jackson, Demarco Cobb, Jordan Hicks and Steve Edmond. However we bring back Peter Jenkins, Dalton Santos, Tim Cole, and we have redshirted guys like Cameron Hampton and I think Deoundrei Davis. There is lots of room for some recruits to step in a get some minutes.

Defensive Backs lose Diggs and Mykkele Thompson, but we bring back Duke Thomas, Jason Hall, Antwan Davis, Bryson Echoles, and Dylan Haines, along with several really good redshirts like John Bonney, Edwin Freeman, and Jermaine Roberts.

Overall this side of the ball should be, considered a reload more than a loss.

The offensive side of the ball is a much different story.

Update on 2016 OL Parker Boudreaux of Orlando, FL after receiving his Texas offer (24/7):

“I’m pretty excited!” Boudreaux told Horns247. “There’s a great atmosphere over there with some new great coaches that are going to turn the program into a top 10 team. The fans are already showing me a lot of love.”

“They watched my film as a staff and said that it was a no-brainer and that they had to offer me,” he said. “They said I’m a swing guy. That I can play multiple positions, but they would like me at tackle because of my athleticism for an OL.”

“I’m pretty interested,” he said. “It’s always a great program with good people. With Coach Strong in there now they are going to their program around.”

“I’m going to talk to my parents tonight about visiting and all of that,” he said.

The mother of RB Chris Warren III talks about his in-home visit with the UT coaches (24/7):

“They were there for a long time,” K’Tara Lopez said. “It was a great visit. It was very relaxed, good conversation, and a lot of laughing.”

“Tommie (Robinson) talked a lot about football and even asked about Chris’ plans to stay in shape and what he would be doing training wise,” she said. “Chris (Rumph) talked a lot about Coach Strong’s Thursday academic meetings where each player is reviewed once a week.”

“Like I have always told you, the academic support is and will always remain a key part to wherever Christopher decides he will go to school,” she said. “So I liked that one! Coach Strong talked to me yesterday and stated a parent can be involved in the process of setting up an academic center plan for their student athlete to customize it based on knowledge each parent has on their student. That is a great and very cool option.”

“He (Coach Rumph) did an impersonation of Coach Strong at a meeting when negative report comes up for an athlete,” she said. “He stops and calls the student at that very minute and they must show up immediately so he can address the issue right after the meeting.”

“Charlie will have the academic support center go through the changes he has made at Texas and what improvements, in regards to progress of current athletes, have taken place,” she said. “Also, they will have off-the-field items Coach Strong has put in for player growth.”

“Really, for Chris, it will be about what the players are like and finding out if it is a whole group of guys that he feels will fit his personality,” she said.

Quick quotes from JUCO OL Brandon Hodges after his official visit to Texas (24/7):

“(Texas head) coach (Charlie) Strong is a nice guy,” Hodges said. “The facilities are nice. We stayed at a nice hotel. They showed major love.”

“I was 11 hours away from home and you go somewhere else you should feel at home,” Hodges said. “If you do it says a lot. So it was a good day for Texas.”

Per 24/7. Things rumbling for today on the recruiting trail:- DE Quincy Vasser of Navarro is expected to announce his decision at noon. We expect it to be the Longhorns. We will have someone at Navarro for the report and photos. Looks good for the Horns. Vasser is a mid-term enrollee. It's the third DE Texas will take in this recruiting class - along with Omenihu and Brown.
- Down in Houston, Texas will make in home visits with WR Kemah Siverand, LB Cameron Townsend and CB Holton Hill today. Siverand is firmly committed to A&M right now, but is allowing Texas and Arkansas to make pitches, too. Townsend remains firm in his pledge to Texas and will visit the Horns officially in January. Hill just got back from an official visit to Florida State.
- DB Holton Hill and DB Kris Boyd of Gilmer, who Texas DB coach Chris Vaughn went by to see yesterday, both visited FSU together. Hill and Boyd have been discussing the idea of playing at the same school for some time. The visit to FSU this weekend didn't finalize that idea for them, but it added a little fuel to the fire. I still think it will be Texas or Baylor for both Hill and Boyd.
- LB Malik Jefferson is expected to receive an in-home visit from LB coach Brian Jean-Mary this evening.
- It's a three-team race IMO for RB Chris Warren -- Texas, Stanford and Washington. We still don't know how much of an effect Washington offering Warren's high school teammate, WR Xavier Castille, will have on Warren.
- CB Kendall Sheffield may never make it to Texas for a visit as he once had said he would do. I'm told it's coming down to A&M, Bama and Florida State. I am told the parents seem to prefer A&M while Sheffield seems to prefer FSU.
- OL Buck Major and DE Louis Brown are getting visits from Texas staff today. Both players remain committed to the Horns and are not taking any other visits.
- Despite his pledge to Texas, DT Du'Vonta Lampkin has set an official visit to Oklahoma. However, Texas coaches are doing an in-home with Lampkin on Thursday. They will discuss the visit.

For those that can't read this, here are some important parts:

-Malik will take his official visit to UT this weekend, and likely the entire defensive staff (including Strong) will do an in-home on the 10th

-parents are still siding with UT

-Nahlin asked a lot of A&M related questions and Malik mentioned he believes he can change the perception of their defense and overall culture under Sumlin, but he "loves" UT and wanted that statement made public

-overall, the recruitment is still trending towards A&M but there may be reason to be a "tad" more optimistic

Quotes from JUCO DE Quincy Vasser after committing to UT (24/7):

“I’ve been committed for six months, so it took a lot for me to tell the coach I would de-commit,” Vasser told 247Sports Justin Krainz. “But at the end of the day it was business, you got to do what you got to do.”

“One strength would be stopping the run,” he said. “Big part of the reason I want to go to UT and expand my pass rushing, to make myself a better pass rusher.”

“Trying to be the best period,” he said. "I’m trying to go in an establish myself as a UT player and have people look up to me.”

“(Charlie) Strong was ecstatic on the phone,” he said.

“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of (something like) that?”

Update on 2016 DT Michael Williams of Fort Worth All Saints after receiving his Texas offer (24/7):

“They told me I can come out and say it,” Williams told Horns247. “I am offered. Coach Jean-Mary told me on twitter first then he reassured me today.”

“I was surprised,” he said. “That is a big time program even if they only win one game. This one has to be at the top for me.”

“Coach Strong changed everything,” he said. “He changed that program around.”

“I’ll make sure I commit (somewhere) before next August,” he said.

WR Ryan Newsome of Aledo talks about his in-home visit with Coach Robinson (24/7):

“Coach Robinson and I just talked about a lot,” Newsome said of the visit. “He said that I am in a position to start when I get there and that they really need me.”

“That’s a little different with Coach Tommie though,” he said. “I know everything that he told me that he won’t elaborate on and he was telling me the truth.”

“He told me that he’s got my back.”

“Yeah, they told me they were going to roll out the red carpet twice as much (for the official visit),” he said. “Just that at home feeling is what I am looking for. (Being comfortable) is very big. That’s what makes the programs is the players.”

EDIT: Found it. It was 247's report from Nov. 7.

Seeing SEC strategy - 8 conf games, picking bowl opponent, weak out of conference opponents (and often FCS near end of year like bye week), etc - just makes it obvious they have better vision and leadership at the top. Can't fault them for superior strategy and plan.

SEC be scared! We play arky !

"We're excited to be playing in the Advocare Texas Bowl and against an old SWC rival in Arkansas," Texas head coach Charlie Strong said. "It will be a tremendous opportunity for our team to play in front of so many of our fans and especially for our seniors who will be doing it for the last time as Longhorns. We've been back at work and getting prepared for the bowl game and know Arkansas presents an unbelievable challenge. They are a really good, physical team that has played their best ball in the second half of the season. We look forward to getting to Houston and being a part of this great bowl."

Rather play AGgIe.

Thats clearly a more compelling game.
But Arky ain't bad. We really don't deserve to be in a bowl game, I really wish we could just practice or practice and play AGgIe.

This bowl stuff is like every child deserves a trophy for participating, except this year they have run out of cheap plastic trophies so that some .500 teams are gonna get left out.
So sad....

Quotes from LB Darrin Kirkland, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN after his official visit to UT (24/7):

“Me and my family enjoyed being down on the 40 acres spending time with Coach Strong and the rest of the staff,” Kirkland said.

“I can see them doing really well (in the future). Coach Strong is doing everything he needs to do. His track record is proven from when he was at Louisville and the steps he made are identical at Texas. They have a big test coming into bowl season with Arkansas and they’re excited about that. Coach Strong has something special going in Austin and he’s working to bring it back to where it needs to be.”

“Really academically how strong they are,” Kirkland said of the biggest take away from his trip. “The side of academics opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities I could have down there and it was really interesting to see.”

“Their business school is Top 10 in the country and it was nice to learn more about it and tour it.”

“Great guys,” Kirkland said. He was hosted by Jordan Hicks. “He was definitely my type of guy. Him actually being from Cincinnati, we found out we actually knew his family. It was great seeing him out there. I felt we were identical the way we present ourselves and it was cool to be around them all weekend.”

“Texas fits in well with the four schools and this visit made my decision process harder,” Kirkland said.

"I'm leaning to Texas a little bit," Hodges said. "I've got that Missouri offer and I'm kind of waiting on a couple of offers to drop in before I sign."

"They have great coaching. They have Charlie Strong their, he's a great guy. You got [Joe] Wickline that is a very good offensive line coach and they have a great environment. They take time to do things right, and I like that about them."

Joe Wickline was at his game, the JUCO national championship game, this weekend.

Really, think about this.
Why do we watch the games. This is such a wrong-headed way to think. These are games, competitions.
What it really illustrates is how fragmented CFB has become. CBS constantly overrating the SEC. FOX doing the same for the Pac and Big 12. The announcers running out of superlatives for their conference. It's actually quite sickening. Can you see Bowlsby getting in touch with FOX complaining about a specific announcer being too candid about a really bad Big 12 game?

I can.

And that's just wrong.

Call a crappy game, crappy. The LSU Alabama game was a hard hitting, bad game. It was close, it was rough, but the QB's were inept. It was all in all, bad football in the era of the forward pass. It just was. It was presented as some titanic struggle, real football. Well it was for the 1950s. This kind of stuff sucks. Tell it like it is.

For the record. I have never seen wide outs get beyond their defenders more than in the TCU/Baylor game. Apparently the defenses were just daring the QBs to throw long. And it did not work. It was really awful secondary play.

Back to recruiting, I have emptied my stomach.

I can't believe he's a cornerback. It was graduation so there were a lot of people in town. We had fun, stayed out a bit late [laughing]."

"I talked to a business professor for a bit. It was just the usual academic stuff."

"Coach Strong was funny. All the coaches were funny. The practice was upbeat, they were all enjoying it. They were in shoulder pads and helmets. It wasn't a full blown killer practice, so they were having fun and getting back in the swing of things."

"Coach Strong and I spent hours together. I couldn't even calculate how much time we spent together. He made me feel real comfortable in that environment. We talked a lot. I also talked to Coach BJ and Bedford for a while too. They showed me some of what I'd be doing out there during the practice."

"The players and the staff stood out to me the most. It seemed like they genuinely like each other. They were having fun out there."

"Texas is definitely still in the mix."

I agree with you, but let's call a spade a spade. The strategy of the other conferences is working, and the Big 12 is left out right now with one team you could argue is superior to two teams in the playoff. This has to do with the Big 12 being in disarray, not having a championship game, and allowing its teams to schedule cream-puffs like my alma mater. While I think it's cool they will be playing Baylor, Baylor has no business scheduling them. While this is ultimately the schools fault, where is the Big 12 looking out for their teams? As much as I can't stand the SEC, they have a sound strategy and they take care of their teams.

Update on JUCO OL Tristan Nickelson of Navarro College (OrangeBloods):

"The general gist of what he (Coach Wickline) was saying is that he needs me to come in with my mind right. I may be a guy he puts on the field against Notre Dame in South Bend next year in the opener," Nickelson said. "He said you're here to enjoy your time in college, but it's a business decision too. You have to get your work done."

"You kind of got to experience what it is like to a player, what they do in their daily aspects, what they do to have fun," Nickelson said. "We got to look at all the academic stuff, talked about all the academic programs. It was really awesome. We toured the facilities, tried on our jerseys. It was all top-notch stuff."

"The highlight was just getting to know the coaches better, really. We got some extended one-on-one time, talking with them. Then we got to watch practice (Sunday) morning, get a feel for how they do their things."

"I think I'm up for the challenge," Nickelson said. "I think the group of guys (Charlie Strong) has coming in, the guys he has now, we have some great guys coming in and we'll be a great team next year."

"I got to hang out with Connor Williams. He's coming in early too and he seems like a a good guy. I got to meet a couple other guys too. The linebackers - I think they had a good time," Nickelson said.

"Everybody is awesome there. You can tell the guys that Mack Brown brought in were really good players. These guys though are really good football players and just good people. Just good guys. Everybody on the team holds themselves to higher standard, and they're all the same way."

"Coach Strong doesn't put up with any bull. If you're the stating quarterback and not following rules, it doesn't matter. You're going to do it his way."

Aledo WR Ryan Newsome (Orangebloods)

Now is where things really get difficult forRyan Newsome (https://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=150136).

After a weekend official visit to Texas, the standout wide receiver from Aledo has now taken all five of his official visits. With trips to Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, Oklahoma and Texas now in the bag, it's almost time for Newsome to sort through his five finalists and begin working towards making a decision.

Almost.

https://ct.yimg.com/mr/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/200%20RYAN%20NEWSOME%202.JPG

Prior to narrowing his focus, Newsome and his Aledo teammates still have some business on the field to take care of. Aledo plays John Tyler this weekend in the semifinals of the Class 5A Division I playoffs. After his season concludes, possibly with a state title, Newsome will then begin to trim his list.

"I guess it's really depending on, if we go to state, that will determine a lot," Newsome said. " I'll probably narrow after these in-home home visits are over. If we do go to state, probably announce my top four after that's over."

Newsome, one of the most highly sought after receivers in the country, will have a busy week of coaches stopping by his house. Ole Miss is coming in on Monday. UCLA is expected to bring a large contingent of coaches on Wednesday. Either Oklahoma or Tennessee will be in on Thursday, and Texas is expected to make another in-home visit on Sunday.

Those visits will be key, Newsome said.

"I'm definitely blessed to be in the position I'm in, to have these schools recruiting me. That's why the in-home visits are so critical. I want to be able to pick the coaches' brains, be able to look you in the eye, see what you're all about," Newsome said. "All the schools I'm dealing with are legit people - that's why I've narrowed it down to these five. I could see myself playing for any of these coaches."

Traditionally, Newsome likes to step back from his official visits immediately after they're over to let the immediate excitement wear off. Doing that allows him to clear his head and give each visit a more honest assessment. Newsome plans to take a similar to approach when it comes time to make a decision.

"Probably after the new year when the dust settles, my head will be clear and everything will be out of the way, that's when I'll probably make my decision. I'm excited about that," Newsome said.

A 5-9, 175-pound playmaker at the slot receiver position, Newsome has been one of Texas' top recruiting targets since the day the current coaching staff arrived in Austin. He said several things stood out about his official visit last weekend, including the chance to watch a UT practice and Texas' ability to showcase the Longhorn Network (Newsome wants to major in communications).

"It was a really good visit. I had a great host, J-Gray (Jonathan Gray). I've been knowing him since I was a kid. Getting to be around him, spend some time with him was really cool," Newsome said. "The visit was great. Coach (Charlie) Strong, he sat down with me and my family, talked about a lot of stuff. He told me they want and need me at UT. I got to see practice too. That was cool to see.

"They were selling the Longhorn Network, how I'm pretty well set after college. That's what I want to do, and the Longhorn Network is directly affiliated with ESPN. I would have my foot in the door with a lot of important people. That's one thing I wanted to see, and they definitely showcased that to me over the weekend."

Texas hosted five other prospects on official last weekend, including top uncommitted linebackers Malik Jefferson (https://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=144447) andDarrin Kirkland Jr. (https://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=153140) Newsome spent quite a bit of time with both players.

"Malik is a smart guy. He's going to do what's best for him. So is Darrin. We're all similar. I think that's what helped us. We really clicked together. If it works out, it would be cool to play with each other. If not, we'll all do what's best for us.

Wherever he winds up, Newsome knows it will be a tough task settling on one school. All the schools on his list will draw strong consideration, and many of them have similar characteristics.

"The alumni support is really strong in all those schools. That's why it's kind of tough to decipher one from the other," Newsome said. "But that's the beauty of it. I have to pray about it, see where God takes me."
