Update on OL Madison Akamnonu of Arlington Bowie (24/7):

“I’m planning on going down to Texas for their spring game in a couple of weeks,” said Akamnonu. “I want to see that offense, especially the offensive line, up close. I’m going to be looking for that tempo and hustle that they have. A lot of teams are up-tempo, but they don’t hustle. I pride myself on being able to do both and that’s something Coach (Joe) Wickline says he expects out of his offensive linemen. We do that at Bowie so I’m all about that.”

“He’s (Coach Wickline) just such a straight forward guy,” Akamnonu said. “He doesn’t give you any BS. If he really thinks you have a chance at Texas, he’s going to tell you that. He’s going to let you know you can be successful there. That’s why we’ve hit it off. He’s a great coach and person. I like him a lot.”

“I can’t say I’d just commit right then and there,” he said. “I can say that the thought would definitely cross my mind. I mean, come on, it’s Texas.”

“It was awesome,” Gragg said. “Seriously, awesome. Getting to meet Coach (Bruce) Chambers, my tight ends coach, Coach (Charlie) Strong and those guys was great. I got to see every aspect of Texas football and man, that’s a lot. Texas football is like larger than life. It’s huge. It’s a whole new thing compared to elsewhere. I loved it.”

“You expect a place like Texas to just be so big and everyone doing their own thing,” he said. “That’s not how it was. I felt like I was right at home. The players, the coaches and all those guys make you feel like family. I felt like I’ve known them all my life. That was great. It stood out more than anything. Just being so comfortable felt so good. Everything was just awesome.”

“I have no idea (what I want to do),” Gragg said while laughing. “Man that’s way too many options. I never thought I’d have so many choices. I know I want to narrow it down sometime soon to a small group. Maybe like five or seven or ten or something. I really don’t know. I guess you could say I have six or seven that are really standing out to me right now. I just can’t say who yet.”

“I’ll go ahead and say yes,” Gragg told Horns247. “I’ll give that one up. They are definitely in there for me, I just don’t want to say who else yet. But, yes, Texas is right there at the top.”

CB PJ Mbanasor of Pflugerville Hendrickson talks about a lack of an offer from Texas (24/7):

“I really thought it would come,” he said. “I’m not real sure why it hasn’t. I’ve heard a couple of different things, but I really don’t know. I’m not sure if I don’t fit into their scheme or if it’s something about my game or what the deal is. They told me to be patient, so I guess I’ll see what happens.”

“It would be great to get that offer,” said Mbanasor. “But I can’t put everything on hold just because they told me to wait. I’m not the type of person to sit and dwell, so I’m not doing that. I can’t sit around and think, ‘Man I wonder why they aren’t?’ I have other schools interested in me, so I’m just pursuing that right now. That’s all you can do.”

OL Patrick Vahe on his commitment to Texas (24/7). He won the OL MVP at the Nike Football Training Camp in Dallas this weekend:

"I'm very firm to Texas," said Vahe. "It's a question I get asked a lot and each time my answer is I'm committed, 110 percent. That's the truth. After that visit I took to Austin a while back, it made me realize Texas was the place for me. I loved it. My family loved it. I want to be at Texas and that's the truth."

"I thought the spring game was this weekend," he said before his MVP performance. "Now that I know it's here in two weeks, I plan on being there. I want to take my family and show them more of Texas. I can't wait."

I think Coach Rumph lands at least two OOS studs.

There is definitely a chance that'll happen.
Darron Payne had Texas in his top 4 even before they offered.
Tim Shuttle and fellow 5-star DE Jalen Dalton has talked about visiting Texas for an official visit together. Tuttle's favorite coach is Rumph.
Matthew Burrell said Texas most likely would be his leader if they offered, which they have.
Jeffery Holland said he would visit for an official visit.
Burrell and Holland are close with 5-star Tim Settle, and I believe they have talked about going to the same college.
Keisean Lucier-South loved Texas early on and wants to visit before his senior season.

DE/DL Sterling Johnson and DE Dorian Roseboro (both from North Carolina) are two other guys I know Rumph has a relationship with. I haven't heard anything about those two though.

"I just want to get a good feel for them. I've never been there (Austin) before, so checking everything out is important," Gentry said. "Reconnecting with the staff will be good. I'll be interested to see what they're doing conceptually on offense and just take in the practice."

"They've just said they believe in me, offering at two different schools (Louisville and Texas). They believe in my athletic ability," Gentry said. "They think they can do good things with my future. The sales pitch is getting me the most NFL ready with coach Watson and their offense."

"When I was out there at Louisville (last year for a camp), I got to sit in on some meetings with Teddy Bridgewater. It was cool to see it up close and personal. It's impressive what they've done," Gentry said.

Quick update on DT Du'Vonta Lampkin of Cypress Falls after receiving his Texas offer (OrangeBloods):

"I talked to coach Strong. He asked me to call him. I just told him I was still interested in Texas and he went ahead and offered," Lampkin said.

"(What stands out is) how coach Strong has his program, the kind of coach he is, it really opens up my mind. I know he works out with his players and things, he's a good coach."

"I really don't know. I am still kind of solid with OU, I just see how things go in the long run," Lampkin said.

When is Wittek going to decide? Any word on Ashs return?

I believe Wittek wants to decide before the semester is up, so probably in May. The timetable for Ash to return is 6-8 weeks, so he'll be back well before fall camp. Fortunately, he's really only going to miss a week of spring camp and the spring game; he'll be rusty (again) early in the fall, but he should be healthy.

a.) I can't help but wonder if this is a sign that Ash needs to give up football.

b.) I had already prepared myself for Ash to get injured at some point in the season, just surprised it came this early.

Update on QB Kai Locksley of Baltimore, MD (OrangeBloods):

"It (the UT offer) happened probably the first week of April. Coach Strong first followed me on Twitter. I had known him from the past, my dad working with him (at Florida). I was very excited, thought they might start recruiting me," Locksley said. "So he sent me a DM and asked me to call all him. I was very excited, I'm very blessed to get offered by a powerhouse like Texas. It's just an honor."

"They're definitely up there. After the offer, I'll have to re-shape my top 15. They definitely have a spot in there," Locksley said. "I can't neglect a powerhouse like Texas. That definitely shakes things up. I'm glad they're in there."

"That's one of the first things they said after he offered. The next phone call the next week, they want me to get down there to see what Texas is all about," Locksley said. "I'm taking these visits in April and was going to take a break in May but I'm hoping to fit them in the month of May. If not then, definitely this summer."

FYI the spring evaluation period begins today and runs through May 31st, so the coaches should be hitting the road soon.

"College coach can use two evaluations per athlete during this period. One for athletics and the other has to be for academic evaluation. If the college coach does both evaluations on the same day, than the coach is granted another athletics evaluation of the athlete."

Interesting. I've been a HUGE Campbell fan since the Rivals camp last summer, but I'm all for him have to re-earn his offer. Same goes for Shaw. IIRC a poster on OB (who are well connected in the Golden Triangle) said that West Orange-Stark always has been known for speed, and Shaw is the fastest they have. Speed combined with his big hit ability made him an interesting player. But as I said, I'm all for them have to re-earn a scholarship.

I have no idea why English hasn't been told the same? I get that Chambers is his god-father and he looks like a great player trapped in a terrible body. But still? Not many weeks ago he said something about him being committed to Texas but that he was looking around. He would visit Oregon in the near future. He acts like he has all kinds of offers. Texas is his lone offer.

A few minutes ago Little debuted as the number one player in the entire '16 class for 24/7. The full 2016 rankings aren't up yet, but I'll post the rankings for the guys that Texas is after. In the article on 24/7 about him being the number one player, Little came with this quote regarding Texas:

As far as Howard and Ed Pope, I wouldn't expect any sort of harsh punishment for failure to pay a ticket but that's just me talking out loud. Who knows, Sumlin may reach a point where he's simply had enough but I don't think you'll see that offense result in a suspension and definitely nothing in the way of missed games.

As for Stansbury, from reading the report, it sounds as if he's adamantly stating that it was not him. If it turns out that it was, assault resulting in someone receiving eight stitches above their eye is a pretty big deal, as is lying to the police. Hopefully, Stansbury is proven to be innocent. If not, he would no doubt face a much stiffer punishment from Sumlin and quite possibly even the AD, as Hyman played a role in meting out the punishment for Floyd Raven and Deshazor Everett last year at this time.

Out of all of these recent arrests, the Stansbury accusation is the one that stands out as serious. And if Gavin ends up being found guilty, losing him for any period of time would hurt more than I think most on this board believe. He is your very likely starter at SDE and is a guy who the A&M coaches really believe is a good, experienced SEC defensive end. Much better than I think the average fan noticed while watching an otherwise bad defense throughout the second half of last season

Its a team game, defense cant really do anything or have good paper "stats" when your offense constantly puts you in terrible situations and cant score. I dont think it was a terrible defense, Baylor with 3 points at half time, Oregon with like 16 points against the defense, 16 points to Tech, 13 points to Oklahoma who beat down Bama as example. Really helps when your defense can feed off your offense but ......

These guys already have the talent to play the game, all they need is the coaching

Under John Mackovic Texas had the 112 rated defense. The next year they had the 68th rated defense. the following year it was top 10. The talent is there now we have a defensive minded coach so I also expect to see a great defense next year.

He is set to make his commitment on May 30th, but calls this a "game changer". I don't know if he will push back his plan to commit, but he has a relationship with Strong and Jean-Mary from their days at Louisville.

That would be the under for me, I think they actually beat both Baylor and Oklahoma. Baylor was gutted on defense and they don't play as well on the road. From what I'm reading Knight looks terrible for Oklahoma, so a lot of that game will depend on what happens with him.

My biggest concern for Texas right now is getting our oline healthy and ready to go and seeing them perform. They must do better or it is going to be a long season. I expect to see our defense pick up exactly where we left off against Oregon and get better from there. That means we will be pretty solid on that side of the ball.

Looking at next season our identity will be strong defense and running the ball.
