We expected this to become official at some point and it looks like it has. Senior snapper Kyle Ashby is no longer listed on the roster; he wasn't on the roster being distributed today at practice and he's no longer listed on the school's official roster at TexasSports.com.
Walk-on players Jak Holbrook and Michael David Poujol are the only two snappers in camp. Texas tried to get Poujol as a preferred walk-on previously and the staff at the time (Les Kenning recruited him) felt he had elite potential.


Also, in case anyone asks, Chris Naggar is not listed on the roster and is not in camp. The only two kickers I saw working today were Trent Domingue and Evan Moore.
Mitchell Becker is now the backup punter to Michael Dickson.

Brandon has checked with sources on the OU side and is told that the Sooners will no longer pursue Texas OL commit, Xavier Newman. Newman was planning a trip to Oklahoma and the Sooners were posing a real threat. But that is no longer the case.

IMO, it all comes down to line play on both sides of the ball this year. I could see Texas winning as many as 10 games or as few as 7. (QB can not get hurt) We just need a few more pieces to the puzzle in the trenches and we can make a real run in 1-2 years. Little/Wilson will help with the puzzle for sure. We need Fowler to get in too!!! He brings the pass rush we do not have currently. Anyways, just my .02 cents. Hook-em!

The Chipster said this morning on the way in that sophomore Safety DeShon Elliott is now running first team D ahead of Jason Hall.

Freshman safety Brandon Jones looks the part but has been a little banged up to start and is in the pit. Look for him to start out backing up Dylan Haines, but making his move as the season progresses.

Anwar this morning over at Orangebloods is saying that they are still waiting on Erick Fowler's test score for his Geometry test he took on Tuesday. The people that he talked to this AM said they are optimistic they will finally hear the results on Thursday.

If Fowler did pass the class, there is optimism he will be at practice in at least a week after getting through the NCAA Clearinghouse.

There is a back up plan in place, but for now, everyone remains optimistic they will hear good news on Thursday.

According to a report from another Texas-based website (Rivals.com), Tyrone Swoopes is the head and shoulders leader in the team's quarterback battle.

That goes against anything and everything I've heard for the past four months AND the first week of practice.

The word preposterous came to mind when I first heard about the report.

Since hearing the report last night, I've spoken to not one, not two, but three different sources in the last 12 hours.

Here's what I am told:

Shane Buechele is leading the QB competition. Buechele is extremely close to being named the starter at the position.

I say this not to anoint Buechele as the best thing since sliced bread; Buechele certainly has areas where he needs to improve as well as experience to gain.

However, it's clear to those making the decisions on the offensive side of the ball that Buechele is leading the competition.

Three sources. All agree.

Two of the sources chuckled at even the thought of Swoopes leading the competition. The third was merely sent via text message.

Some football team notes Horns Sports.
I caught up with some sources to discuss the latest with the team.

1) There was a report out from Orangebloods' Anwar Richardson that Swoopes was blowing the field away in the QB competition. First let me say that Anwar is a very good reporter, and he's reporting what his sources are telling him. I spoke with my sources in Austin to get the latest, and they were dumbfounded by it. 2 of them outright laughed at the idea, and they re-iterated they expect Shane to be the guy this year. I also talked to a couple of players, and every one of them said they think Shane wins the job. In addition, I talked to some others in the media and they all say the same thing I'm hearing. I'm not sure who the source is for Anwar, but either he's being misled, or he's waaaaay ahead of the curve.

2) There were some whispers that Deshon Elliott has overtaken Jason Hall for the safety position. Elliott has done well this summer, and his focus has been to get in the film room more than anything. While he is making progress, the job is still Hall's from what we understand.

3) Denzel Okafor (http://www.hornsports.com/forums/topic/12587-some-football-team-notes/#) is for real, and he's starting to make a push at right tackle.

4) there's some difference in opinion on when a starter might be named quarterback. The majority of my sources believe it will be next week following the first scrimmage, but there are a few that believe this will stretch out to game week. The reps have been split between Swoopes and Buechele, but we are told if there is an edge it is toward Buechele.

Our Oline must remain healthy. If we could possibly run the ball and grind clock it will take so much pressure off Buechele and the defense. IMO this is how we must win games in this conference. I would rather see 80 yard drives/6 yard passes staying inbounds than big plays. We cannot give the ball right back, we just can't. Limited possessions is going to be huge.

Yeah, TCU hard to predict until we get a better idea on Kenny Hill. Loaded at WR and they did well without Boykin & Doctson against OU and OU last year. So many injuries meant the young kids played a lot of downs. Hill has lost weight and looks completely different than when he was at TAMU.

“It was an awesome visit,” Hines said. “It’s always good to talk to Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach (Vance) Bedford and Coach (Brian) Jean-Mary as well. Just being able to build relationships and see the unmatched facilities. You can’t beat the education."

“They are building something special and what a lot of people don’t realize is their linebacker depth really isn’t that great. There are opportunities.”

“Coach Strong just tells me to continue to stay humble,” Hines said. “He let me know where I stand. They’ve been interested for a while, and he tries to make it known that I’m a top priority. My dad is a huge fan of Coach Strong and trusts him.”

I'm told that the crew of Texas running backs continue to nurse minor injuries.

Remember, three of the top four (Foreman, Johnson and Porter) have had surgeries since the last time they played a real game and Chris Warren is two years removed from serious surgery, too.

While it's well known that Foreman, Johnson and Warren have been limited in fall camp, I'm told Kyle Porter is now dealing with soreness in his ankle, which he had surgery on this off-season.

However, unlike the others, I'm told Porter has not missed a practice, yet coaches are now somewhat concerned he may be getting too many reps since the others have been so limited.

I know I sound like a broken record to some degree, but I'm told Porter has a real chance to make a difference for Texas this season.

So while almost all of the notoriety on the offensive side of the ball has been about other true freshmen - Shane Buechele, Collin Johnson, Devin Duvernay, Denzel Okafor - I'm told not to forget Porter because he could also have a major impact.

I don't necessarily believe that Porter's presence will limit the carries of Foreman or Warren. The coaches don't know exactly how that will play out either. After all, Foreman and Warren are just so big and powerful compared to the normal running back these days and specifically compared to Porter.

But, rest assured, Porter is someone the coaches see something special in and are going to try to use it this fall so long as he stays healthy.

I'm told Shane Buechele continues to distance himself in the starting QB competition.

"It's not close," a source told me yesterday afternoon of the battle between Buechele and incumbent Tyrone Swoopes.

IMO what Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly did yesterday, by announcing both of his QBs would play against Texas, is no different than what Charlie Strong is doing.

Denzel Okafor has stepped in for Tristan Nickelson, who was injured on Monday, on the first team at right tackle.

I'm told it's been Okafor's "come to play" mentality ever since he arrived on campus that has separated him from the other freshmen offensive linemen who also arrived this summer.

"He doesn't waste a practice," a source told me of Okafor. "He gets that you go to work and get sh*t done. No f*cking around."

Redfield is the most prominent player involved. He has been the starting safety the last two seasons, finishing fourth on the team in 2015 with 64 total tackles and recording one interception.
