From someone in the know.

Here we go.......

First off let me say I picked the wrong day to go. Should've gone during a scrimmage. But whatever. I didn't stay long because I got a phone call and had a last minute engagement I had to get to.
Pace- Rapid. The turn around time on plays is REALLY fast. The offense would get into a rhythm and then "BOOM" something would derail it. Bad play, false start, missed assignment- and you could see all momentum just grind to a halt. This is practice- I get it. But the body language of some of the guys on O was that of frustration--- which leads me to believe that this happens a lot.
QB- can we find someone that can throw a damn out route? And not a 5 yard out I mean a 15 yard out.... TS throws like a scattergun. Either too "floaty" or too short. We loves us some bubble screens too. Don't get me started on his deep ball. Saw him hit one guy in stride. Other throws the WR either had to slow down, come back, or it was over his head. He threw three full on quails and his pass has developed a bit of a wobble. But we can't throw an out route to save our lives.
SB is about----- ok, hold out your right hand and make a fist. Now extend your index finger. That's about how big around SB is. He tiny. Decent arm but he struggles on the deep out as well. You can tell he's a little unsure of himself because before and after almost every play, he glances over at the staff for what I assume is approval. But as a freshman it's understandable. Suffice it to say, I didn't walk away with a warm fuzzy about the QB situation. It's going to be TS, like it or not.
I didn't see KL take a single snap which leads me to believe his days at QB are numbered. Sorry metcalf, I know you had high hopes.

WRs- we've got dudes that look the part. They look like NFL wrs standing there. Tall, gazelle looking dudes. Nobody that looks like Lovell Pinckney of course, but they "look" like football players. #1 is running good crisp routes and exploding out of his breaks. He needs to keep his eyes up more, I caught him looking down at his feet several times which means he's either A. Marking his breaks with his eyes (run to THAT spot and cut) or B. Just has a bad habit. I can't tell. His hands look better but with Captain Scattershot throwing, it's tough to tell. #85 and either #6 or #8 (can't remember which and I wasn't writing sh!t down) one of those two can't run routes for sh!t. 85 looks like an NBA small forward. Dude looks 6'7. He's got hops, but looks awkward running routes. And because he's tall, QB throws it up where only he can get it. I see a problem happening when we line up against a zone secondary that doesn't shower with him. A bad a$$ safety could cut him in half. I give him props for going up on the ladder over the middle but someone could easily lay him out, and he doesn't have to worry about friendly fire right now. Over all I give them a "meh"--- where as last year it was an "ugh".
RB- 33 is a big boy. 25 is a really big boy. 25 needs to realize he's not beating anybody to the edge so square your shoulders and get north and south. He's running to open grass and his has a tendency to want to try and get outside the box to make a play. E for effort but he'll make his money by running between the tackles. He's not going to beat you in a 100 yard dash, but he's not slow either. He just needs to work on getting the plant foot in the ground and exploding up field. The rest will take care of itself. 33 has some juke, quick feet, good vision, but needs to hold onto the rock better. I assume he's laid a few down this spring because he was getting chewed on a bit about it. Over all we are solid there.
OL and DL--- sorry, I can't grade them. Everyone stays up high during practice to avoid injury. You can't accurately judge guys that aren't playing at full speed in a game situation.
TE- it's 42's job to lose. Again, everybody stays high, but his blocking looks pretty good for a TE. Runs decent routes, isn't going to blow past you if you're a safety but if we can get him isolated on a teams slowest LB there will be a definite mismatch. He looks about 6'4 and has some a$$ on him and he runs nice routes. He's got a deceptively quick first step which will keep him from getting jammed. He's really our only option at that position.
LB- I said it last year and I'll say it again- 46 is going to kill someone. He's learning. Last year he was all over the field but out of position a lot. He relied on his speed to make plays and get him back into position after a misstep- like all great HS athletes can do at THAT level. Well folks, them days is over. He passed up so many kill shots it was silly. He's learned that if a TE is running a deep drag over the middle, instead of running towards him to initiate contact and risk over pursuing the play, to just wait. There will be a TE or wr running a middle crossing route this year that will have a brush with death. Write it down, in stone, hermetically seal it. 46 will go megaton thermonuclear on somebody. It's probably going to cost him a game when he does it, but you watch-- alligator arms will start showing up on crossing routes. I couldn't take my eyes off the kid. He's DJ takented. Different skill sets than DJ, but just as much talent- and it's starting to seriously click for him. The game is slowing down. Last year he was always in a mad rush to get somewhere. This year, no mad rush because..... he's already there. Phenomenal potential. Some poor WR is going to order coffee and 46 will serve it to him decapitated.
GDDH and #2 need to get their sh!t on the same page. Remember that deep ball I warned you about during fall camp? The deep ball miscommunication that happened twice in the same practice? Only to have ND throw the exact same pass and GDDH and #2 did the exact same thing they did in practice thus making us look stupid on national TV?

Happened again. It was like Deja vu. 31 looks confident. The rest of them look like clones. All the same height, same build, same everything. GDDH did break up some throws, but it wasn't Elway out there throwing pin point lasers, it was Captain Scattershot and his ilk. I was going to bring an 8X10 black and white of GDDH and have him autograph it "to my biggest fan metcalf, love Dylan" but I decided not to.

Not really a glowing practice but if my schedule allows, I will try and get back and see that last one before the O&W game.
We ain't there yet boys- I am curious to catch a fall camp practice when the OL and DL are down to the nut cutting.

OL Creed Humphrey of Shawnee, OK talks UT (24/7):

“I was really excited,” Humphrey said. “My overall interest level in Texas is high. It seems like they are going to be really good in the future. I like how they are building things up and how they are getting some recruits in.”

“Coach Mattox offered me back when he was at Tulsa, so I’ve known him for a while,” Humphrey said. “He’s a really cool guy. I like the way he coaches. He said that they like me as a center or a guard.”

“I got to see all the facilities and everything,” Humphrey said. “The city of Austin is great. The campus was beautiful. I had a lot of fun watching the scrimmage. It was a good visit.”

Those short cuts you had of the Houston workouts clearly showed how far ahead these guys are right now.
It would be fantastic to have a really good season and land just one of these two. It would be good for them to just hold workouts against each other. It looks too easy for them.

Imo Wilson needs to lose some baby fat if he wants to play entire games.

The biggest change in the offense so far this season has been the increased tempo; running as many plays, in as little time is possible. Some players are realizing just how physically demanding the tempo is and it has forced players to get in better and betters shape

from the brainiacs

The coaches need to emphasize that playing in the Big 12 involves more than the weight room and 40 times. These guys that bulk up have got to do so without sacrificing ENDURANCE. The announcers often time refer to guy who have nonstop motors as something that just requires effort, that's just wrong. These are guys that are in top shape and can run for 4 quarters.

We we need to establish more than the ability to hold 4 fingers up. These guys have to keep moving the ENTIRE practice. There is time to get this done. I just hope summer involves some endurance work that is not excessive reps on a weight bench. They need to move the F'N legs the entire practice and then some. I hate an exhausted guy holding up 4 fingers 3/4 of the way through a game.

Sorry for the rant but the coaches need to do something about this if it can't be done in practice learning tempo. There is no tempo without athletes that have endurance. Exhausted athletes don't think about plays, they think about trying not to fall over.

And it does not look so good at QB.
The Dline and Oline are thin.
This is a bit frightening, we maybe starting all over.

Oline is great at the starters but we need depth, I think we will have it by the 5th game of the year. DT will be a work in progress, I think we should be okay we have solid starters and with one or two contributors from the freshmen class we could be solid.

For me it begins and ends with the QB, we get mistake free performance from our QBs and just rely on the running game we should win 9 games, still too early to tell though.

We are still very young. The guys we are really counting on were freshman last year. We absolutely cannot have embarrassing blowouts starting with ND. The coaching staff did a big flip... I could go on.

All these kids we have lined up will bail if we start over again. This season is huge. Do we even have a placekicker yet? So many mistakes from the coaching staff also last year... It would be nice if the Big 12 is bad this year. ND first game (they seem to start off really well and decline) F it. We just play and see what happens. I might be an old man before we ever even get a sniff at a National Championship.

CB Chevin Calloway of Dallas Bishope Dunne talks about his visit to Austin for the spring game (24/7):

“I don’t have top list or anything like that,” Calloway said. “But Texas is a school I’m taking a closer look at. I liked the defensive scheme. I like the facilities. I just like what they have going on there.”

“It was good to get to meet them,” Calloway said. “It was my first time really getting to know them. I really liked Coach Strong. Coach Jennings said he would love for me to play for him. We just talked about the qualities he’s looking for in a player and what I’m looking for in a coach.”

“I think the team has a chance to be special in the future — maybe even by next year,” Calloway said. “I love what Coach Strong is building. He’s getting a lot of big-time guys. And now they have a quarterback.”

Walker Little: If one recruit got the red carpet treatment from the Texas coaching staff this weekend it was Episcopal (TX) OT Walker Little and his family. They came in on Saturday for the spring game and stayed until Sunday afternoon to get some more one-on-one time with the coaching staff.

When I asked Walker about getting the special treatment he said, “They definitely treated us well. We got to spend a lot of time with coach Strong and Mattox. Really got to build our relationships.” Little also spent some quality time with the early enrollees in OL Zach Shackelford, QB Shane Buechele, and WR Collin Johnson after the spring game. Little said, “They just told me how much they have enjoyed their time and specifically how great coach Mattox has been with them”. It certainly helps when you’re being recruited by three freshmen players who all have a chance to start this upcoming season!

Little said something that stood out to him after the visit was “probably how well me and Mattox got along. Also how well me and the players got along.” He also added that Texas was a top contender for him coming in but he feels more comfortable with everyone at Texas than he ever has before.

Little will continue to take some spring visits before he trims his list down but right now I would say Texas’ top competition for the star OT is Ole Miss and Stanford.

– Insider Note on Walker Little: To add to what was reported, in speaking to some inside sources it’s sounding more and more like Walker is Texas’ to lose. And I agree with Andrew, the biggest threats to Texas will be Ole Miss and Stanford but right now I’m predicting this one ends up going to Texas’ way. If the decision had to be made today, I’m told Texas would be the choice. – (Super K)

Inside Texas:

More on Desoto OL Xavier Newman: From someone who was there, "Dad and Uncle loved it. Uncle was particularly blown away and was just excited about the opportunity Texas presents. Forget football. They're still in disbelief Xavier has such an amazing opportunity. Bryson Echols even told them, 'even though it didn't work out for me here doesn't mean it won't work out for you. Then Adrian Colbert came over and said, 'I think they're going to turn it around, I just needed a new start. This is a great place.'" -IT.

Other nuggets (nothing groundbreaking):

-Westlake OT, Stephan Zabie, is now ranked #97 nationally by 247.
-Like Such mentioned, Texas leads for Graham. AK thinks Graham should be pulling the trigger soon.
-Walker Little had a great visit. IT is now picking Texas. He's up to #57 nationally on 247. Big boy.

Agreed, it's pretty astonishing to hear the feedback from players and coaches about Buechele. All say how much of a gym rat he is and how much work he puts in. I don't think I've heard such high remarks of an incoming freshman and a quarterback of all things. He's got the right mindset. I was impressed with how well Shane played given the short amount of time he's been on campus. One can only hope he'll still improve from now until opening day with summer workouts and fall camp still ahead.

HORNSPORTS:

The Orange and White game might have felt incomplete after weather caused a cancellation at halftime of the spring scrimmage, but the event was a success on the recruiting front for the Texas class. While Shane Buechele showed glimpses of what is to come, recruits on campus took notice. As we spoke with many of them after the event, there was a palpable buzz coming from nearly all of them. Let’s start with two of the biggest name prospects on campus.

Bellaire Episcopal OL Walker Little brought his family to Austin, and the word was that Texas took a big step within this recruitment. The hype even went so far that a source near the program contacted me to tell me that he thought Little had given Texas a soft commitment. In checking with some folks near Walker, we were told that was not true, but they did give the visit high marks. Texas showed Little a true red carpet treatment, and his parents really enjoyed the atmosphere and experience. The Longhorns are still going to have a fight on their hands against some monster programs, but the bottom line is that Walker really likes the program and coaching staff. He sees Texas as a great opportunity for him both on and off the field.

+++++

Temple defensive end Taquon Graham has been a frequent visitor to Austin this spring. The dynamic pass rusher hasn’t kept his feelings for Texas private, and we were told by a source close to him that he had a great time once again at the game. Graham has a very strong relationship with Vance Bedford, and his relationship with Brick Haley is getting better each time the two get together. At this point we believe it is a matter of when rather than if for Taquon. His mom signed off on a commitment to Texas after visiting with him earlier in the spring, and 2015 signee Davion Curtis is one of his best friends. Graham is reportedly considering a summer commitment, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see this timeline get moved up if the coaches push for it.

+++++

2018 Sachse quarterback Jalen Mayden seems to be the top target on the Texas board in his class. Mayden camped in Austin last summer, and he’s been invited to campus just about every time they open the doors. We caught up with Mayden following his visit to get a read on his experience.

On how he enjoyed the spring game:

“Good! I wish I could have seen more of the offense, but it got shut down early.”

His thoughts on the new offense:

“I like it a lot. It reminded me of my High School. I like how they used the wide receivers and spread them out to the sidelines. I would like to see the quarterback be more active in the offense. They definitely have a good group of wide receivers though."

On if he got to talk to the coaches:

“Yeah, I talked with Coach Strong. We talked about spring ball, and he told me what he wanted to see out of me this year. Coach Gilbert told me he was going to check me out in the spring. He’s going to come up to Dallas to watch me, like really watch me. He wants to come to really focus on me and evaluate me.”

On if he talked with any players at the game:

“Yeah, I talked with (Charles) Omenihu. He went to my rival school, so I know him pretty well. I also talked with Shane (Buechele). I just told him good game and he told me they looked sloppy and need to get better.”

+++++

Lake Dallas (TX) corner Kobe Boyce made his first trip back to Austin since committing a few weeks ago. He visited campus with his father and a friend, and he also had the opportunity to bond with a few of his fellow commitments.

“I already knew Major (Tennison), but I met Sam (Ehlinger) and Damion (Miller) today”.

Boyce enjoyed the game, but was a bit bummed that the weather interfered. “It was good, but I wish it didn’t get cancelled”, Boyce said. “I enjoyed it overall.” Boyce told us his father really enjoyed the visit as well, and as we’ve reported in the past he is incredibly solid to Texas. No worries for Texas with the talented corner, and Texas fans should be able to count on him to help recruit other prospects in this class.

+++++

Plano West linebacker Mohamed Sanogo is another frequent visitor to Austin. “Momo” has been tearing up the camp circuit, and he’s definitely on the Texas radar. Sanogo was in town for the Orange and White game, and he told us it was another good visit to Austin. “It was great, I saw really good things on the defensive side.” Sanogo told us he got to spend time with Brian Jean-Mary, and his relationship with the Texas coach is growing. “I’m pretty comfortable with him, he’s a pretty cool guy. All the linebackers I have spoken with say they like him as a coach as well.” Sanogo does not hold a Texas offer at this time, but Texas could be close to extending one. They’ve done a good job so far of keeping him engaged, and they are positioning themselves well for a second half recruitment

+++++

2018 Sachse defensive end Zachary Gilson joined Jalen Mayden on campus for the scrimmage. Gilson visited previously for the Texas junior day, and in the past he’s raved about the on campus experience. So how did he enjoy the spring game? “It was great.” Gilson said. “I love the atmosphere.” When asked what his favorite part of the visit was, Gilson answered “the home feeling that it gave to me. It’s just great.” Gilson is a player who is just starting to pick up interest. The Texas staff is well aware of the talented sophomore, and if they get involved for him within the next year they have a strong chance of landing “Big Red.”

+++++

Nacogdoches corner Josh Thompson made another visit to Austin to take in the Texas spring game. Thompson is close with 2016 signee Brandon Jones, and Texas is letting Thompson know they are evaluating him closely. Thompson loves the Texas program, and he had a great trip up for the game. “The visit was amazing. The coaches were very straight forward with me, and they told me not to worry about anything because my time is coming. During the visit I felt real comfortable. The fans and players treated me well.” Thompson was also encouraged by the performance during the scrimmage. “They are going to be tough next year, plus they have a great group of players coming in this year.” With Texas watching him closely, we urge you to keep his name in mind throughout the year.

+++++

Wilmer-Hutchins ATH Herb Sparks doesn’t hold an offer from Texas, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting in front of the coaches as frequently as possible. We caught up with him afterwards, and the dynamic playmaker raved about his visit. “Man I loved it! That’s the best visit I’ve been on. The game was good, but it would have been better if it wasn’t cancelled. It was still a great game, and Shane (Buechele) is a baller.” Sparks spent some time with Jeff Traylor on campus, and he told us he plans to be back on campus this summer. “Yes, if they don’t offer in the spring I will be coming in for a camp.” Sparks is another name to keep in mind as we progress into the spring evaluation period.

+++++

2018 Yoakum twins Joshua and Jordan Moore made their second trip to Texas this spring, and it sounds like they had a great time. “The visit was great! The atmosphere was crazy, the fans were crazy! When something good happened, the stadium just suddenly erupted even though it was just a spring game. That’s pretty impressive to me that the fans were all in like that! A lot of big time players made big time plays, it was just a great overall visit and I’ll be back for sure,” said Joshua Moore.

His brother Jordan echoed the praise for the visit. “It was great, I love Texas. They are one of my favorites, and one of the best in the country!” The twins didn’t get much time with the coaches due to the fact they had to leave early when the rain started coming down. The Moore’s mother is a graduate of Texas, and it looks like both twins are feeling the Longhorns early on. “They most definitely just jumped to the top of the list,” said Joshua. The Texas coaches are laying the foundation for their recruitment, and it sounds like it is going very well. “As of now, we are slowly building this relationship. We’re taking as many unofficial visits there as possible to get to know everybody more deeply,” Joshua told us. Both players are four star caliber, and they both look like early takes according to the film. With a mother as a graduate, and those quotes, you have to like where Texas sits here.

+++++

2018 Rockwall linebacker Alston Orji is starting to pick up some momentum among 2018 recruits. He made his way to Austin this weekend, and Texas made a strong first impression for him. “I enjoyed my visit to Texas,” said Orji. “I got to catch up with Chris Warren and meet other players and coaches. It was a great football environment, and I’d like to visit again at another time if possible.” Orji got to spend some time with the coaches, and he found that he shares many of the same values with the Texas staff. “I had the opportunity to speak to several coaches, and I was happy to find out Texas values the same things I do regarding education.” While it’s early on in his recruitment, Orji told us he felt that Texas has a legitimate interest in him. “They showed an appropriate level of interest in me as a student-athlete, complimenting me on my game and my classroom work.” We spoke with a source who was with Orji on the visit, and he told us about another thing that is working in the Longhorns’ favor. Orji is Nigerian, and Texas has a well-documented history of Nigerian players. His parents have done mission work with Sam and Emmanuel Acho’s parents, and they were unaware that Sam and Emmanuel attended Texas. Meanwhile, Charles Omenihu is already on campus, while Tope Imade and Denzel Okafor will be enrolling this fall. Put all of that together, and it seems like Texas would be a great fit for Orji and his family.

+++++

One final note. If Texas decides to roll with Shane Buechele as a starter this season, it could be a potential boost for recruiting. In talking to some sources inside the recruiting world, it was clear that Buechele opened some eyes on Saturday. Several people mentioned the buzz the young freshman created. If Buechele can succeed this season and show some positive development going forward, Texas could potentially surge with several skill prospects. Many prospects already have a high opinion on Sam Ehlinger, and if Texas can show they’ve got some real talent stocked up at quarterback they can really make some noise on the recruiting scene. It’s a very small sample size, but people are starting to see some rays of light at the end of the tunnel.

Some recruiting notes from 24/7...

-UT will supposedly go "all-in" on RB Toneil Carter of Houston Langham Creek during the spring evaluation period. The staff still has not had much contact with him since offering, but Coach Johnson will be making him a priority. As things stand, he's favoring A&M and LSU. This move is unrelated to RB JK Dobbins committing to Ohio State as he remains a top target.

-things have changed completely in the recruitment of OL Xavier Newman of DeSoto. UT now leads and A&M is reportedly out of the race, even though he was high on them before attending UT's spring game last Saturday. As of Monday morning, he was mentioning Colorado as his leader, but that is also no longer the case.

Though Texas will miss on plenty of those names, even some who may seem farfetched at this point will end up in Austin if the team can simply improve by three games.

With the exception of Nick Saban, Charlie Strong does the best job in the country of creating late momentum in recruiting. We've written volumes on the reasons: he leaves many slots open which creates a snowball effect when it's most needed, he gets recruits to buy-in and #believe despite poor seasons, he relates to prospects and parents alike, his track record for development is as good as anyone's, etc.

Assuming Texas wins eight, Strong and the staff will be able to sell trajectory, a young and exciting roster on both sides of the ball, a by God quarterback (seriously, it has to be divined), and, perhaps most important going forward, an improving ability to sell the University away from the football field and foster a family environment.

Essentially, Strong's pitch is becoming more and more fine tuned thanks to his ability to collate his strengths with Mack Brown's.

This ability casts an even wider net on the trail, but just as importantly helps thwart other school's sales pitches, some which might not be on the up and up.

Since I believe Texas will win eight games in 2016, I'm bullish on how I think the class will finish. Keeping in mind recruiting is almost entirely unpredictable and filled with plot twists.

QB Sam Ehlinger, Westlake (Westlake, TX) - TEXAS: Coach Ehlinger as far as recruiting goes.

RB JK Dobbins, La Grange (La Grange, TX) - fOHIO STATE: I'm riding with this until JK tells me not to.

WR Damion Miller, John Tyler (Tyler, TX) - TEXAS: Texas has the offense. Texas will have the quarterbacks. I'm feeling good here.

WR Mannie Netherly, Crosby (Crosby, TX) - TEXAS A&M: Tate's a flighty diva to put it mildly. Sumlin has issues, to put it mildly. The UT offense has caught Netherly's eye. I'm doing simple math here.

WR Tyrell Shavers, Lewisville (Lewisville, TX): He doesn't talk a whole lot but the little I've interacted with him has given me confidence. He seems like a kid who will gravitate to the personalities on campus and obviously the offense suits him. He's raw as a route runner but can play early because of the nature of the offense.

TE Major Tennison, Bullard (Bullard, TX) - TEXAS: Tennison's a key piece because he's so rare from a size/skill standpoint. I like his ability in this offense because he affords Texas the ability to keep the tempo up while transitioning seamlessly from 11 personnel to what amounts to 10 without having to substitute.

OT Walker Little, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX): I was talking to a friend the other day and stated, "eight years ago Little to Texas would be a done deal because he's a 'Texas' type of kid.'" I'm starting to feel he'll end up at Texas in 2017 too.

OT Stephan Zabie, Westlake (Austin, TX): No offer yet but he has such a high ceiling I just can't imagine they don't extend one. And if they do, I like him to follow Ehlie.

OG Xavier Newman, Desoto (Desoto, TX): We've discussed him a lot in the past couple days. Things are looking good here and he'll be a better take than his composite ranking (86) indicates.

OL Grayson Reed, Cy Creek (Houston, TX) - TEXAS A&M: Admittedly he seems happy with his recent commitment to A&M so obviously I'm projecting here. Texas may need some help with another middling season for A&M. I'm not sure they don't just let Reed go and focus elsewhere. I have him here because I needed a feasible fourth.

DL Lagaryonn Carson, Liberty-Eylau (Texarkana, TX) - TEXAS: One of the early must-gets has been in the fold for sometime.

DT Marvin Wilson, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX): Yes, I'm going there. Proximity plus my prediction of Little to Texas plays a part here. UT is virtually the only school I can see the duo continuing being teammates.

DE Taquon Graham, Temple (Temple, TX): Somebody retweeted one of my tweets not to long ago that read to the effect, "Texas needs to go by Temple and see Taquon Graham and Davion Curtis." The initial tweet was a full year ago. Needless to say if Graham pulls the trigger, it'll be a big get. We feel real good here.

WDE No clue, can't venture a guess. I think K'Lavon Chaisson and Robert Beal will both give fans hope but right now I don't see either having a great chance. I do think Texas has a better chance with Chaisson, however, as he knows he's a good fit for the defense and his in-person/on-campus recruitment hasn't really begun. UT definitely needs a pass rushing WDE in this class, though Hager making the transition (for now) helps numbers and some guys who could help are on the way.

OLB Baron Browning, Kennedale (Kennedale, TX): There's talk TCU is the favorite and if it's not them it will be UCLA. A TCU moderator has said UCLA may try and hire Baron's older brother as a GA. If that happens then all bets are off. UCLA wouldn't make that hire without a prior understanding. I don't know if any of that's true. What I do know is Strong landed Browning's kindred spirits, Malik Jefferson and Jeffrey McCulloch, in back-to-back cycles when others elsewhere thought they were lost causes. I'm going to stick to my read and the feedback I'm getting on this one.

ILB Anthony Hines, Plano East (Plano, TX): Hines is another huge need even if you're encouraged like I was with Anthony Wheeler on Saturday. He's an inside linebacker with outside athleticism. I'm a bit worried about him going OOS but often when a recruitment makes too much sense it swings in that school's direction.

OLB Levi Jones, Westlake (Austin, TX): I'm going to swim against the currents somewhat here and predict Strong wins this recruitment after building a trusting relationship with Jones' parents. For a family with the Jones' means, proximity isn't a big deal like it is with others, but as a former NFL linebacker himself, Robert Jones will have to love a scheme that highlights linebacker athleticism. If Jones doesn't make it into the class, I think the third linebacker will be someone who has yet to hit the public radar.

S Derrick Tucker, Manvel (Manvel, TX): If Strong operated like most coaches and used car salesmen, I think Tucker would already be in the class, but Strong isn't one to pressure for early commitments. I love Delpit. I love Okudah. I like Barnes. I wouldn't pick Texas for any, though UT likely has the best chance for Okudah at this time, which is telling on the other two. Both Delpit and Barnes will visit at some point but there are a lot of built in negatives Texas is facing with each.

CB Kobe Boyce, Lake Dallas, (Lake Dallas, TX) - TEXAS: Lil Mamba brings a lot to the table and to the class as a possible field corner who won't be a commitment you have to baby and nurture through the process.

CB Kary Vincent, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX): I don't have high confidence with this one, but he always gives Justin positive feedback and I know, while he coveted a Florida offer and in fact politicked for it, he's not showing much Gatah love as before. Of course with his dad being a former A&M wide receiver they'll be a factor, but they were quite late to the party and my hot-stove speculation is Sumlin is sitting on a hot-stove.

CB Again, no idea here. I could see Texas picking away at Chevin Calloway. His recruitment basically just started this past weekend with his visit and interaction with the coaches. I could also see an athletic stud like Timarcus Davis or Langston Frederick earning a scholarship. Or, Strong could just go to Louisiana, Florida, or elsewhere and use his evaluation x-ray vision to see something other schools are missing in a sleeper.

K LOL, wtf is a kicker

It's important to keep in mind with big-name early enrollees like Baron Browning, Anthony Hines, and JK Dobbins announcing well before NSD, Texas could get a late bounce that catches the eye of other big-name recruits.

Keys to the class: win a Hateful 8 (is that a good movie?) then land Browning and Hines.

We're nearly guaranteed a wild cycle yet again.

OL Xavier Newman of DeSoto discusses his commitment to UT (24/7):

“First of all, I liked all those schools,” Newman said. "They were all great options. But Texas stood out to me the most. I called Coach (Charlie) Strong and told him I had some good news and committed."

“He was really excited, and I’m really excited. I can’t believe it. It just feels so good to be a Texas Longhorn.”

“I loved it (the visit to UT),” Newman said. “I was really impressed with the fan base. I can’t say enough about them. They left me speechless. I also liked the new offense. I think it will be a great fit for me because we run a lot of up-tempo at DeSoto.”

“I love what Coach Strong is building, and I want to be a part of it,” Newman said. “I think that Texas is going to get back to where it used to be. It’s going to be a winning, powerful program.”

OL Stephan Zabie of Austin Westlake looking for a UT offer (24/7):

“It (the UT spring game) was fun,” Zabie said. “I had a good time. I went with some teammates, so it was great. But they got rained out in the second half, so that was kind of a blow. We ended up just chilling in the lounge.”

“Shane (Buechele) did a good job,” Zabie said. “I think he’s really good for a young quarterback with lots of potential when he gets the offense down. The offense did pretty good seeing how the defense has a lot of talent and the offense is raw with a new system.”

“I would like to think that (UT possibly offering), but I don’t really know,” Zabie said. “I’m not a coach, but they’ve been sending me a lot of love. That’s their deal. I don’t really know. I just got ranked by 247Sports. I hung with some of the best at The Opening camp."

“I got moved up highly in the rankings, so I’m just going to continue my thing. I have a lot of programs coming to see me that I’m excited about. It’s really just the start of my recruitment.”

When Scout last spoke with Nickelberry in December, he told us that Texas was his dream school. Recently, the Longhorns extended a scholarship offer.

“It definitely was big time,” Nickelberry said. “I was very, very happy. I remember as soon as I got offered I called my mom and we started crying with each other.”
While the Texas offer was big to Nickelberry, there are two programs that stand out for the four-star prospect.
“Texas and Florida State” Nickelberry listed as his favorites.

Per Scout:
Mammoth lineman Chuck Filiaga (http://www.scout.com/player/193219-chuck-filiaga) is one of the biggest offensive tackles in the country and weighed in at a solid 6-foot-6, 335 pounds at The Opening Regional Camp in L.A back in February.

For as big as he is, Filiaga is very well built and has tremendous upside. He's a naturally strong kid who moves around well and plays hard. He's still refining himself as a player in terms of his technique and becoming more comfortable on the offensive side of the ball but there's a reason just about every top program in the country has offered him a scholarship.

Filiaga played his last two seasons at Vista Murrieta (Calif.) and is currently still working out with the team and will finish off the spring semester before transferring to Aledo (Texas) for his senior year.

On the recruiting front Filiaga, spent his Spring Break a month ago checking out, in order, the Oklahoma Sooners (http://www.scout.com/college/oklahoma), Texas Longhorns (http://www.scout.com/college/texas), Baylor Bears (http://www.scout.com/college/baylor), Tennessee Volunteers (http://www.scout.com/college/tennessee), Auburn Tigers (http://www.scout.com/college/auburn) and Alabama Crimson Tide (http://www.scout.com/college/alabama). The big lineman gave his thoughts on each program.

...........................

Longhorns- "I loved the UT campus and had a great time with Coach Strong. As soon as I walked in the door, the whole staff greeted me and were cracking jokes and made me feel comfortable. Coach Strong is a great guy and I loved what he had to say. He talked about the discipline he wants and expect in the program and how they're building something great there."
...........................

He recently moved from CA to Aledo, so we should have a shot here if we push hard.

Texas hosted a number of top recruits for its annual spring game earlier this month.

But one notable name missing from the visitors list was Kennedale outside linebacker Baron Browning. There was a lot of speculation about his absence, but Browning said it simply had to do with family.

“My mom needed me to stay home that weekend,” Browning said. “That kind of shut everything down, so I stayed home. Then I went to watch some film with Coach (Zarnell) Fitch at TCU. I just wanted to pick his brain since I’m going to be playing more Will and last year I played more Sam.

“I talked with Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach BJ (Brian Jean-Mary). They just told me it was all cool. They understood. They just asked about my family, and family comes first.”

There have been some talks that Browning is really focused on TCU and UCLA at this time. But the five-star prospect made it clear that he is still considering most of the schools in his Top 10, which he released three weeks ago.

And that includes Texas. Browning has a special relationship with head coach Charlie Strong, likes the direction the program is heading in and truly enjoyed his visit to Austin in late February.

“I like the class they got in this year,” Browning said. “I’m looking to see how the team and the defense does this season. Coach Strong stands out to me. He’s the icing on the cake. You don’t find too many coaches that really care about their players and how they do in the classroom.”

Browning said he likes both TCU and Texas because they are in state, but he added that he’s ‘not afraid to go far away from home.’ In fact, his brother played football at Stanford, so Browning is taking closer looks at Alabama, Ohio State, UCLA and others.

The only visit Browning has set for this spring is Ohio State, which will take place at some point in the next month. After that, he plans to really focus on his upcoming decision.

“I definitely want to make it before the season,” Browning said. “I was actually thinking of doing it at The Opening this summer, but I’m not sure if I want to wait that long. I just kind of want to get it over with.”

A five-star recruit, Browning will graduate from Kennedale in December and enroll early.

At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Browning is ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker in the country and No. 3 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Baron Browning is a very respectful kid about every schools he's asked about so I wouldn't get too excited about this update. However, I'm hearing he's not going to Texas. His older brother, who played college ball at Stanford, could play a big role here. There's talk about him getting a job at UCLA. That's a school who many people aren't giving enough credit to right now. If he stays in-state it will be TCU, where his dad played.

Could end up being the case, but I think the idea of Texas trailing or being out of this recruitment entirely is premature.

If you examine how UT has closed their recruiting classes the past two years, it's silly to make a claim like that in April.

EJ 24/7 Has the right perspective on this IMO-

I spent most of my Monday afternoon hanging out at Kennedale and watching five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning work out. After conversing with Browning for an extended period of time and talking to others at his high school, I really don’t believe that this is a race between TCU and UCLA. I would even go as far as to say that I would give Texas the in-state edge as of today. Browning is set to make his decision in the next few months, and Texas should like where it stands. The most important thing for UT is head coach Charlie Strong to close (pardon the pun) strong, something he’s done time and again during the past two cycles, and assistant Brian Jean-Mary getting more involved in the recruitment, which should happen in the coming weeks.

Here are some quotes from my conversation with Browning that put his recruitment into perspective as far as the Longhorns are concerned:

On where things stand overall: “I dropped my Top 10, but I’m not really communicating with some of those schools. Anything can change. I’m still considering TCU and Texas obviously because they are in state. But I’m still weighing some out-of-state schools heavily. I’m not afraid to leave home.”

On why UCLA is a big player in his recruitment: “Coach (Scott) White. As far as linebackers coaches go, he is by far the one I have the best relationship with right now. If I go there, I’ll be in good hands. He is one of the only coaches that not only stays in contact with me but my parents. He even talks to my grandparents and my older brother, who is playing a key role in my recruitment as well. Coach (Scott) White really has a plan for me. He’s going to show off all my skills. He wants to use me like Myles Jack.”

On the academics at Texas: “I was really impressed at junior day. They have a lot of academic advisors and a lot of resources for you to succeed and do your best in the classroom. If you fail, it’s your fault and nobody else’s. And obviously academics is a big factor for me.”

On if he’s talked to Texas about how he’ll fit into the defense: “They haven’t talked too much to me about that to be honest, so I’m not really sure how I would be used.” (Holland)

Alex Dunlap on the Baylor Scandal

Alex Dunlap (http://rosterwatch.com/author/alex)
27 Apr 2016
Uncategorized (http://rosterwatch.com/uncategorized)

I’m sure that the Baylor fans, alumni and stakeholders who’ve threatened my life, my family and made our private records and personal matters public in recent days over my reporting of BU’s horrifying (and ongoing) scandal will feel that they’ve “won,” but they haven’t.
This will personally be the last piece of reporting I will be doing on the Baylor Scandal.
This is not my beat. I was only pulled into this whole mess due to the fact that no one else seemed to care and I felt obligated to step forward and care. As I’ve spoken to crying victims late into the night or laid sleepless and fidgety in recent weeks, I’ve wondered, “How the hell did we end up here?”
For goodness sake, I’m a football analyst.
The reason I’m moving on from the story is not for concern over my own safety, as these threats are idle and made by cowards, the kind of cowards who not only circle the wagons to go after reporters looking for the truth and some semblance of justice, but also victims who’ve already been damaged beyond repair by this same mob’s lack of doing anything remotely similar in these victims’ darkest moments.
If Baylor stakeholders did the type of digging on the criminals Coach Art Briles harbored within his football program that they have done on me, none of us would be here right now.
Alas, the witch hunt has now extended from the people reporting on this crisis to those affected by it. Victims – some whose names have never even come out and just want peace as they recover (alone and unsupported) – are now receiving the same sorts of threats and bully tactics, as intimidating strangers wrongly accuse them of being involved with me and lord only knows what else.
The reason I know this is happening is because I know numerous sexual assault survivors who attended Baylor. Many of them I met at a prayer vigil held on BU president Ken Starr’s lawn last year. Some of these people I’ve kept in touch with and consider friends, but certainly have never relied on for source-material. These women are again being victimized, now via unfounded threats and accusations related to me.
Lawyers I have never met are being reported to the bar association for contact with me that never occurred. The reason struggle has been brought to these innocent people is because of cowardly responses to my reporting, which I can’t handle having on my conscience.
It’s clear that someone, somewhere, realized that I had gone from a pesky pain in the ass to a “Holy shit, this guy has the goods on us”-type of presence and they unleashed the hounds.
It goes to show (yet again) Baylor’s lack of ability to conduct a reasonable investigation on its own. My best “source” in all this has yet to be contacted or bullied – and, in fact, might just be someone they see every day.
Maybe there is at least one decent person around there, after all.
Here is what needs to be known for the media and investigators who’ll continue digging, free of the personal restraints I now feel myself bound by:
This is a fact:
The results of a private investigation Baylor has hired an outside firm to conduct will show that Baylor and Head Coach Art Briles were aware of alleged violent incidents involving players who were kept on the football team; and who later went on to commit or be accused of subsequent violent acts against female Baylor students.
If these damning details are not made available in the version of the investigation results Baylor chooses to dispense, it means they have been removed in an attempt to protect Briles, the athletics administration and BU president Ken Starr.
The proof is everywhere. Baylor knows it. Now the question is, will it continue with the cover-up or come clean? In the end, it doesn’t really matter, as I’m quite sure the truth will come out either way.
It just won’t be coming from me.

Quotes from WR Omar Manning of Lancaster (24/7):

“It was a childhood favorite for me growing up,” Manning said. “Texas was the big school here. I used to always watch them. Tradition, obviously. It’s just a good program. I think Coach (Charlie) Strong does a really good job. I think he’s going to turn it around this year.”

“I want to see the offense,” Manning said. “I know they’re going to have a different offense that they’re running this year. I want to watch them through the season and see how they do with it."

“I like the new offense because it’s kind of like what we do here. I feel like I can fit into any offense — pro or spread. It really doesn’t matter. But the way they explained it to me, I think it’s going to be pretty good.”

“I’ve been talking Coach Williams lately,” Manning said. “He’s just been telling me about how the offense is changing, how they have a new game plan and how I would fit in. I like him.”

Update on OL Xavier Newman of DeSoto (24/7):

“I’m just very excited to be committed to Texas,” Newman said. “I know that Texas is the right place for me. It’s a good school. I really like Coach (Charlie) Strong and what he’s trying to build there.”

“He (Sam Ehlinger) played a big role,” Newman said. “He introduced himself to me at the spring game and after that, we just started talking. We really got to know each other. He told me all about Texas, and I really liked it.”

“I’m trying to get them to offer my teammate Isaiah (Stewart) so he can commit with us,” Newman said. “I’m also recruiting Stephan Zabie. If they offer, I want him to jump on board.”

“I think (Texas) can be great,” Newman said. “I think they can win all of them.”

Some recruiting notes from 24/7...

-Coach Mattox made a visit to Keller Timber Creek to see OL Alan Ali. He is currently committed to SMU, but UT could be close to offering.

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3889909/alan-ali

-LB Tyler Taylor of Buford, GA plans on visiting UT once summer begins.

-QB Sam Ehlinger has been speaking with the UT staff about taking the commitment of WR Camron Buckley. It's still a bit unclear if the staff wants to honor the offer that Coach Norvell made to Buckley last summer at the "Under the Lights" camp. Coach Williams wants to evaluate him in person, as he's not currently a priority with offers out to WR Omar Manning and WR Tyrell Shavers.

-LB Levi Jones of Austin Westlake is supposedly feeling UT more and more. The biggest competition right now appears to be LSU.

Doubt those are firsts.

The entertainment business that involves the ability to perform physically is a cruel one. The kid is obviously not very wise and might have to be taken care of. There were some other very good OTs. These kids are constantly given very clear instructions on rule infractions. He made the choices. It's very tough on the poor kids. Mississippi knows this.

Bobby Burton's Friday Post 24/7-

It was the night it all came tumbling down for Ole Miss and Baylor smells like Penn State...
In case you missed it, Ole Miss offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil dropped like a rock in the NFL draft following a picture appearing on his official Twitter account just an hour or so before the draft. The picture was that of Tunsil smoking a bong with a gas mask on.
Someone with the goods on Tunsil had clearly hacked his Twitter account and it had its effect.
Now I wouldn't want my first-round pick portrayed that way on social media. But weed is technically legal in certain states and my educated guess is 95% of NFL players have smoked the substance by the time they've left college.
Marijuana, however, wasn't the real story of the night.
The hacker took to Tunsil's instagram account just an hour later.
The hacker posted screen shots of two text message strings allegedly between Tunsil and the Ole Miss Director of Football Operations.
In the texts, Tunsil asked for his mom's water and electricity bill to be paid. The cost was $305.
The director of football ops response?
Not simply "no". Not, "why the hell are you asking me for money for your mom's electricity bill?"
Instead, there were two responses.
First, the director of ops wrote that he had no way of helping Tunsil with unscheduled amounts of money.
Yet eventually he told Tunsil to go see "Barney" to take care of things. Barney is the Ole Miss director of high school relations.
The texts were clearly dated as occurring in April of 2015. At that time, Ole Miss was already under scrutiny and investigation by the NCAA.
Following his eventual selection with the 13th pick overall by the Miami Dolphins, Tunsil owned up to the authenticity of the text messages. He said he was hacked and whoever posted them did so without his approval. But he said that "yeah" he took some money from Ole Miss coaches.
These text messages and Tunsil's own words show specific things.
1. This isn't a lone actor. It's systematic. Ole Miss football utilized more than one staff member to "take care of" the electric and water bill of Tunsil.
2. Ole Miss athletics did this while already under investigation by the NCAA. If there has ever been a justification for the death penalty akin to SMU, this is it.
I hope the NCAA throws the book at Ole Miss. But perhaps more importantly, I hope the institutional members of the NCAA, like the University of Texas, demands that the book be thrown. This is not a time for the NCAA member institutions to backpedal. It's a time to act.
The same can be said for what's happening at Baylor right now.
The allegations levied against the Bears, its president and its football coach strikes a chord that is becoming eerily similar to that of Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky case.
The Bears, it is alleged, knew of a likely sexual predator in their midst (Tevin ******) yet claimed they could do nothing until a legal proceeding began.
Baylor could have done anything and it would have been more than what they did.
SMU got the death penalty. Penn State got severe sanctions which crippled the program.
The member institutions, not just the NCAA proper, are the ones who should stand up and demand that Ole Miss and Baylor are treated the way they should be.

“We didn’t talk to much about an offer,” Cook said. “But he (Coach Jennings) said that he really likes me and that they are going to keep recruiting me. He wants me to get to their camp this summer. If Texas offers, they would definitely be in my Top 4.”

“I liked it (UT spring game) a lot,” Cook said. “I got to know Coach Jennings a little better. I think Coach Jennings is a good coach. I liked the way they used their defensive backs. They actually have two guys from Lamar.”

“My grandma and his (Eric Cuffee) grandma are sisters,” Cook said. “It would be amazing to play with him because I grew up with him. He wants me to make the best decision for myself. But he’s told me good things about Coach Jennings.”
