Lol Davis Webb is transferring to Colorado. I doubt the Buffs care.

I know he announced he's transferring there, but I don't know if he's signed anything.

It most likely doesn't matter because Kliff would block Webb to UT like he did Brewer.

Hm. I'm not sure how the rules would work for a graduate with one year of eligibility left. Would be interesting to know.

Can someone confirm if QB Davis Webb is now following Coach Gilbert on Twitter?

I don't see how Tech would allow it, but I'm curious.

They are now following each other. I checked last night out of curiosity and just Webb was following Gilbert. Just checked and Gilbert has returned the favor with a follow. Can only wonder what the DM's look like...

IT-This is what I expect a Charlie Strong Junior Day to look like because it's a mix of national elites, some sleepers, and contingency plans who we may or may not hear from down the road.

With Strong's emphasis on evaluating senior film, who knows how some of the lesser known kids will materialize as targets 8-10 months from now? At last year's J-Day I recall talking to Rahssan Thornton who was about to blow up as a prospect, as well as Zach Shackelford who ended up having a great senior year and becoming a Texas priority. A year later and he's already on campus.

DT Deiontae Watts of Plano East talks about his UT offer (24/7):

“My position coach actually texted me to come to his office, and he was smiling,” Watts said. “He got me on the phone with Coach BJ (Brian Jean-Mary). He told me that they loved my film and that they wanted to offer me. I was really excited.”

“I’ve always been interested,” Watts said. “I went down there for a game, and I really liked the family atmosphere. Even the team played like a family. I also like what they are trying to build there.”

“I am actually pretty close with Anthony (Hines),” Watts said. “We talk about recruiting and playing together. But I don’t know if we’ll end up at the same school. We’ll just have to see.”

Update on DE Bryan Jones of Baton Rouge, LA (24/7):

“I’ve talked to Coach Brick a couple of times on the phone, and he’s a cool guy,” Jones said. “He came out to my school, and he didn’t believe I was a junior. He was really impressed with my size and just said ‘wow.’”

“I’m really looking forward to junior day,” Jones said. “If they do offer me, it would be a big honor because I would get to play with my big brother and mentor Malcolm Roach. It would be an amazing opportunity.”

“Malcolm (Roach) has just been telling me that Texas would be a good school for me,” Jones said. “He said that it’s nice and everything, so I just want to get up there and see the campus and facilities for the first time.”

I keep hearing A LOT about it on the media actually. But it's just a subpoena, apparently, 9 men were subpoenaed. I don't know if that lady was a slut or if the husband is trying to find dirt in too many clean closets. It's so inconclusive at this point that there is very little to talk about.

You do realize that your premature ejaculation on the subject will almost assuredly leave you with a selfie facial.......when will you kids ever learn.

We all know Strong has a very high character rating. However, that doesn't mean he is innocent......look at Kirby Puckett, Marvin Harrison, Bill Cosby, etc. Conversely, just because he was given a court order doesn't mean he is guilty. Let the facts come to the forefront. Let due process run its course. If Strong is guilty, then so be it. If he is innocent, then so be it. Either way, any rush to judgement could leave one looking quite silly and foolish.

Update on the commitment status of TE Major Tennison (OrangeBloods):

"It's obviously still a huge honor to be a part of the Texas Longhorns. I've looked at other schools. I'm not going to hide that from anybody. I've just looked around at how people use the tight end. I'm still committed, just feeling things out right now," Tennison said.

"I've always liked the Longhorns. It's been a dream to be a part of it. The flair of committing to he University of Texas has kind of worn off, the reality of going to college. I wouldn't say it's a super strong commit. I'm still looking at how other schools use the tight end. I'm not trying to hide that, not trying to mislead anyone."

"I hope to get to talk to the new offensive coordinator, get to know him, really find out how they're going to use the tight end next year and over time," Tennison said. "I really want to get some insider information if I can."

"From what he has said (previously), it seems like they'll throw the ball to the tight end a little more so that's good news for me. ... But that's all I really know right now."

"He (Coach Traylor) knows. I think he knows I'm committed and love Texas. I'm also looking around but still committed," Tennison said.

Quotes from CB Kobe Boyce of Lake Dallas before Junior Day (OrangeBloods):

"Mainly I'm really excited to come in and be able to be a part of this," Boyce said. "My main goal is to get to know the coaches, build a better relationship with them, especially the corner coach who just came in."

"Not yet," Boyce said if he has talked to Jennings. "I just recently found out that he was announced the corner coach. I'll make sure I get to talk to him at junior day."

"(Coach Haley) mainly just said he wants some dogs up there, and he thinks I'm one of them," Boyce said. "Hopefully an offer will come up there at junior day. We'll have to see. I'm not sure, we'll have to see, but I'm really interested in Texas."

"Texas is one of the top schools on my list, so a commitment could be in the picture. But I still want to look at my options in the future," Boyce said. "But I would be very interested."

"I just like what Charlie Strong is doing up there. He's come through a lot, been through a lot in the past year. I like what they did with their recruiting class in 2016, the last three days before signing day with all the commits. I don't know what's going on up there, but I know something good is happening and it would be good to be a part of it."

TFloss32
02-26-2016, 12:35 PM
Update on OL Matthew Huhn of San Antonio Jay (OrangeBloods):

"I first heard from UT a while back, a few weeks before Signing Day. It was a week or two after I got my Baylor offer, things were kind of blowing up at the time. I would like to get a feel for the coaching staff (on the junior day visit). I already knew the offensive line coach from when he was at Tulsa. I would love to build a bond with him."

"When I first think of Texas, the first thing that comes to mind is football. Also, it's an amazing university, well-known, a big powerhouse for football," Huhn said. "They can have a bad season like this year, but look at the recruiting class they still picked up."

Funny you say obsessed I just thought some here would get a kick of it as I ran down the Twitter feed. "All the stuff we did today, it makes me feel more solid and more comfortable with (Texas). After seeing what the offense will look like, I like it, I like it," said Miller with a smile as big as DKR.

Reed has become a must get in my opinion. Higs knows something about Walker Little. He called Little's no show at Texas Junior Day. Higs has stated previously that Texas has no shot with Little.

Get Reed early, and then start looking at OOS and late bloomer in state options at OT. I think we need two OTs in the 2017 class.

Lake Dallas CB Kobe Boyce

“I loved everything about it.”

On a possible offer

“They said it’s gonna come real soon and not to worry about it”.

On what he liked most

“Just meeting the coaches and getting to know them better”.

On who he hung out with

“Mohamed Sanogo, Anthony Hines, and Jeffrey Okudah. Coach Jennings talked to Jeffrey and I a lot”.

On his impression of Clay Jennings and Vance Bedford

“They’re both people that showed me a lot of love. I like how they approach things football wise, and I think their defensive scheme is something that I can excel at. They’re just good guys”.

On how he felt other recruits like Anthony Hines and Jeff Okudah enjoyed themselves.

“I think they enjoyed it a lot. It looked like they were having a lot of fun”.

Mansfield Lake Ridge LB Loren Mondy

“It was really good. I found out some things that are good for me and my future”.

On what those things were

“Coach BJ wants to see me this spring play middle backer. He likes me a lot, good things should come this spring”.

“Coach Strong from the jump was talking about academics. They really do care about academics”.

Where Texas stands for him following this visit

“They stand pretty high after the visit. It really impressed me”.

Elkins LB Kenneth Murray

“I would say the junior day visit was productive. I sat down with the coaches and discussed where I am at in the process and they told me where they are which is exactly what I wanted to get done. It was a great experience”.

On what the coaches told him

“I’m pretty sure they will offer they just want to see me in the spring. They love me when I rush on the outside and blitz. They want me to play more ‘backer in their scheme at Mike or Will, so coach BJ, coach Strong, coach Haley, and coach Bedford said they will make sure to see me play in the spring. They think it’s big that I plan to enroll early, and they are excited about me”.

Wylie East RB Eno Benjamin

“Everything was great”.

On when he might get an offer

“He [Anthony Johnson] told me he’s just getting everything situated, and he hasn’t really taken a look at what UT is trying to do, but he is pushing for me. He said he’s been watching me since my freshman year”.

On his favorite part of the visit

“Learning about the staff and everything they do. How everything is in one spot, it was interesting to hear about the plan that they have”.

On how he feels about Texas

“They would be my number one school. I love the way that they are using their DBs, not allowing them to know just one spot. They want them to know every spot in the backfield”.

2018 Crosby RB Craig Williams

“I enjoyed it very much, the environment was great and the coaching staff was very nice”.

On what Anthony Johnson told him.

“He was excited I made it to the visit, and he recruits my area so he will be down here either in the spring or fall to check me out”.

“Nothing but good things to say, it was very nice. The food was incredible, and the staff was nice. I’m walking away very happy and excited”.

S Jeffrey Okudah of South Grand Prairie talks about the Junior Day (24/7):

“I’m definitely considering Texas now,” Okudah said. “At first, I didn’t really see the plan. But now, with the recruiting class they just got, I see what Coach (Charlie) Strong is doing. Seeing guys I work out with like Eric Cuffee signing was big. I think Texas can get back on top soon.”

“I had a great time,” Okudah said. “Coach Strong, Coach Jennings and Coach Bedford really sold their message. They had two strong recruiting classes, which speaks volumes about what they’re doing. And I think they’re getting it done. I see the plan.”

“I think (Jennings is) a great guy,” Okudah said. “Coach Mack says he really likes him and that he can really help me. If he likes him, then I like him. When I talked to Coach Jennings, he said he was going to get my mind right and my feet right. That sounded good to me.”

From Ketch:

No. 3- Remember when Junior Days were the end all, be all?

Once upon a time not too long ago, it would have been impossible for the Texas football program to host a Junior Day in February without at least a half dozen commitments going down over the span of a few hours.

Under Mack Brown, it used to represent the power of the Texas recruiting muscles, as rivals such as Oklahoma and Texas A&M were both petrified at the thought of who Texas might take off the recruiting board before a true recruiting war could ever be waged and ecstatic over the number of players the Longhorns would invest in that they had zero interest in.

By the time Brown entered his last few seasons, the coaches in College Station and Norman would go out of their way to survive the Texas Junior Day with key prospects by scaring them into believing that Texas would pressure them to commit when they weren’t ready. The general thinking was that if Texas couldn’t get them locked up by the end of February, then it would never get them locked up, leaving the Sooners and Aggies to scoop up the players that were unwilling to end their recruitments with 11 months to go before Signing Day.

Now?

As Jason Suchomel and I discussed in the Orangebloods podcast on Friday when previewing the event, I’m not sure that Strong had an interest in anyone on hand giving him a commitment. Oh, don’t get me wrong, if one or two of the best prospects on hand had wanted to give a verbal pledge, Strong would have certainly not kept a guy like Baron Browning from committing to him, but Strong just isn’t motivated by early pledges for a few reasons.

a. I get the sense that he prefers to chase a kid than babysit him, so unless he’s got someone he won’t have to worry about in the future, he’d prefer that kid just stay uncommitted.

b. Strong enjoys the flexibility that comes with not filling up too early, which often kept the Longhorns from going after more talented targets who might have had a legit interest in the Texas program because it was already handcuffed to other kids.

c. When selecting from the deep pool of players in the Lone Star State, Strong prefers to have as much time to continuously evaluate as possible, thus allowing for a late-bloomer or two to walk into his world who might not have otherwise.

Therefore, it’s hard to grade the success of a Junior Day in 2016 because the net positives or negatives might not be known for another 300+ days in some cases. What really matters now is that the quality of prospects in attendance is high, the weather is nice and good times/zero hurt feelings occur.

Well, with two national top-50 and another eight Rivals 250 prospects on hand, you’d have to say the talent on hand was where you’d like it to be. Meanwhile, the weather was so good on Saturday that it could have served as a postcard day for the Austin Chamber of Commerce. Oh, and not a hurt feeling was seemingly found anywhere on campus.

Check, check and check.

In this new era of recruiting for the Texas football program where early commitments are viewed as equal parts victory/equal parts pain in the ass, those three check marks will have to do.

Per TFB: Charlies Strategy

In terms of his recruiting strategy, Charlie Strong is the anti-Mack. Brown made early offers and wanted early commitments. Charlie strong sometimes seems like he’s deliberately trying to not to offer and not to get commitments. At least that’s how it may feel to Longhorn fans.

If it feels like that to you, the reason is because, to some degree, it is true.

I spoke to Texas (and everyone else’s) top defensive back target, Jeffrey Okudah earlier this week after his visit to Austin. Okudah said he had a chance to sit and down with coach Strong. He said that coach Strong talked to him about the fact that he doesn’t want early commits. According to Okudah Strong says he prefers for guys to wait.

That certainly isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Other recruits have noted having the same type of conversation with coach Strong.

I’ve thought about this recruiting strategy and while I think Texas still has some things that need to be refined on the recruiting trail (many will be naturally remedied with guys like Mattox and Gilbert), I find the delay strategy intriguing. It intrigues not only as a substantive idea unto itself but also in what it says about Charlie Strong and his faith in his ability to be successful…even if it’s in the final hour.

So I want to offer up a few thoughts on why this deliberately delayed recruiting strategy is interesting and perhaps even compelling and what it may say about coach Strong. I will note that I don’t know that this kind of a strategy would work in states that don’t have large recruiting pools but it seems to be working in Texas.

– His Offer on His Timeline: One of the first questions most coaches ask a scout or a high school coach about a prospective player is, “what other offers does he have?”. It’s a widespread question and in my opinion is indicative of a schools inability, whether due to lack of resources, confidence or otherwise to do their own evaluations. One group of coaches you’ll rarely, if ever, hear ask this question is coaches from the University of Alabama. The question is mostly irrelevant to them. They offer who they like…when they want. Sometimes Alabama is early and sometimes they are late. They’re on their own timeline.

Strong employs a similar strategy. In fact last year when everyone was offering Okudah prior to spring, Texas was one of the later schools to offer in the spring. But Texas was also the first school to offer Lagaryonn Carson. Strong works on his own timeline and does his own evaluations.

Last year in camp, the Texas staff loved CB Rajah Preciado. Preciado was the only db that could run with Damion Miller (Miller still got him at the tail end of two deep routes but no one can truly stop Miller). At that time Preciado’s biggest offer was Fresno State. The Texas staff didn’t care. Prior to going back to the offices after the camp, Vaughn and Bedford had agreed that if Preciado measured out at 5’9 or taller (flat footed, flat back) Texas would’ve offered. He measured in at 5’8.5. So while Preciado was not offered, it had nothing to do with his lack of offers. If God had given Preciado half an inch of height he would’ve signed with Texas.

– Time to Evaluate: To the point above, offering on your own timeline whether early or late affords you the opportunity to really get to know a player and watch his development. And while this may seem to contradict my point above about doing your own evaluations (probably because it does), sometimes delaying offers allows other staffs time to discover problems/issues with a recruit that you don’t.

If we’re talking about taking time with offers, it gives you time to watch a players development and watch how their character unfolds as they handle the recruiting process. It also gives you time to see how some new players will emerge during their senior season who may end up being better than the recruits you had on your board.

– A Tidal Wave of Momentum: When specifically talking about seeking delayed commitments, Strong has been able to create tidal waves of momentum on signing day. And as that happens, recruits who you’d think Strong had no shot at can get swept up into that momentum. There were guys in the last cycle that, at a certain point, I thought Texas had come in too late on. But to my surprise, those players ended up signing with Texas. And while those particular recruits will point to very real reasons they chose Texas, I can’t help but believe that the energy and momentum that Texas had going into signing day was a huge part of it. When you get a few commits here and there, it’s less stressful for the fans but Charlie seems to prefer to create this ball of tension and energy towards signing day and it seems to work.

– He’s the Hunter, Not the Hunted: Towards the end of the recruiting cycle, everyone is trying to flip everyone else. But what do you do when a kid isn’t committed? You can’t flip him. You can recruit him and perhaps earn a commitment from him but you can’t flip him. Strong seems to like being the predator. He likes to have the guys he feels good about stay uncommitted…as if to make them wait on that moment till they can no longer be preyed upon. Meanwhile, he targets commits and instead of being of Texas being the girl you’ve been dating for a long time…Texas becomes the “new girl”. And everyone likes the new girl.

In a time when players are changing their mind more than ever, this strategy, at least for Texas, seems like a brilliant psychological move in how to deal with the emotions of young people. Recruit them but don’t let them commit until there’s no turning back. That way you…

– Remain Fresh: Coaches often talk about recruiting to players using the dating analogy. Whether it’s…”well we aren’t ready to offer because when we do it means we’re committed to you so it’s like dating vs being in a relationship…” Or something like that. Or when a player commits they get the…”this is a marriage” speech.

But papers aren’t signed till signing day so however that analogy goes, there’s no “marriage” till those papers are signed. So you’ve got to stay fresh till the end. Easiest way to do that, it seems, is to delay that exciting moment where a player is able to say “I commit”. Because often, a few days or weeks after that exciting moment comes the…”hmmm I wonder what else is out there?” moment.

– Make the Offer Special: I know that in the last recruiting cycle, Strong and his staff had a deliberate strategy of wanting to make the Texas offer special…to make it meaningful. And one of the easiest ways to do that is to make a it a little more rare. Whether an offer comes early or late, they are trying to make it special.

– This Strategy Takes Balls: I don’t know what all this is going to mean for Texas on the field but I’ve got to hand it to Strong, he’s got guts. In my experience people who have principles in life and stick to them despite what others say tend to be successful more often than not.

Strong has tried the patience of many Longhorn faithful but his resume suggests that the man knows what he’s doing. People question his recruiting every year and every year he ends with an epic bang. Texas fans are hoping that like his final hour miracles in recruiting, Texas will have similar success on the field.

Ouch, that smarts, I really wanted Dobbins. BFLT loves him some speed backs. Jamaal is probably my favorite player in the history of the Texas Program.

I wouldn't shrug off tOSU. Urb is an elite recruiter. Maybe the distance thing starts working for us down the road, but right now it's an uphill climb for the Texas staff.

The offense must show Dobbins something this fall. This is kid has grumbling about the UT offense for the past two seasons, and for good reason.

Texas should take two backs this cycle, I'd like to see Texas offer Benjamin and keep the effort all year to bring in Dobbins. If Forman has the season I think he will have, i believe he will leave early next year.

Running back is the one position I feel like if you have NFL talent you should get there ASAP, they have the shortest career and need to make their money when they can.

HORNSPORTS:

Plano (TX) East linebacker Anthony Hines is the most decorated high school player in the nation. Hines boasts offers from 81 different schools including Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Penn State, USC, UCLA, and Texas A&M. Hines is a big-time prospect on the Texas board, and Charlie Strong is personally handling his recruitment. We spoke with Hines at a skills clinic this past weekend to get an update on his recruitment.

Hines worked with the defensive back group at the clinic, and he took on every challenge that came his way. He jumped in on every rep he could, and he even lined up against receivers on the outside when he could have only taken reps against running backs. As he explained it, working with defensive backs helps to make him a complete player.

“It always helps to have that DB footwork to go along with a linebacker mentality when you go out to these camps to compete and be the best.”

Hines is no stranger to the camp circuit; in fact he dominated at The Opening regional in Dallas last year. Hines was named the MVP among linebackers as a sophomore, so he has several different goals for himself when he attends this year.

“I gotta punch that ticket to Oregon this time, but I’m also looking to outdo my boy Baron (Browning), you know they’re all going to be out there, but I’ve got to prove that I’m the best”.

Hines is very close with the other linebackers in the class, and they’ve created an environment of healthy competition.

As his recruitment pertains to the Longhorns, Hines attended the Texas junior day in February, and really enjoyed his time on campus.

“It was awesome. Always good to visit the facilities and visit with the head man. Coach Strong is an awesome dude, he has a really great presence, and he’s just a guy you want to play for,” Hines told us.

With so many offers on his plate, Hines recently cut his list down to a top 20. Texas did make the cut, and the Longhorns are strongly in the mix to land the talented defender. So what is it about Texas that appeals to Hines? It turns out that early opportunity is a big recruiting tool.

“I think they played something like fifteen true freshmen last year”, said Hines. “If you go there, you have a lot of early opportunity. He’s bringing that winning culture there, and I look for them to do very well this year.”

Texas also has some help from a current player and an incoming player. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, Malik Jefferson might be a factor in this recruitment. Jefferson and Hines are known to one another, and they talk regularly. Hines told us that Jefferson is recruiting him to Austin, but so is Texas signee Jeff McCulloch. With so many great players already on campus at linebacker, you’d think it might scare off some players. As with anything in his life, Hines embraces the challenge.

“They have a really good system of rotating in and out, and I really believe I can compete with those guys.”

Hines will compete this coming weekend at The Opening Dallas Regional where he’s almost sure to land a spot in the finals. He’s visited Austin multiple times in the last year, but look for him to get to campus for unofficial visits in the spring and summer. One final note of interest. Not that it means anything huge, but it couldn’t hurt that Hines was wearing Longhorn gloves during the skills challenge yesterday. Stay tuned for one of the most anticipated recruitments of the 2017 class.

+++++

When you play in the secondary with Brandon Jones, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Nacogdoches cornerback Josh Thompson has emerged from that shadow, and now he looks to lead the Dragon defense next season. We spoke to the east Texas corner during the skills clinic yesterday to get an update on how things were going in his recruitment. This was the first time Thompson was able to train with this talented group, and he really enjoyed the competition.

“It was great just being able to see where I was at,” said Thompson. “It’s good going up against some of the best in this area and just getting some work in.”

Thompson has his sights set on The Opening regional in Dallas this coming weekend. A great performance could put him on the map in the recruiting world. As things currently stand, Thompson is hearing from many schools, and he seems to be on the cusp of emerging as a known recruit.

“Recruiting is going good,” said Thompson. “I’m hearing from more schools. I’ll be visiting La Tech on the 12th and I’m going back to Baylor on the 18th."

Thompson was scheduled to be at the Texas junior day in February, but a last second transportation issue caused him to miss. Thompson stayed in contact with the Texas coaches, and he’s currently figuring out a way to get back to campus.

“I’ll be going down soon, I’ve got to talk to Coach Jennings. You know he’s new there so he’s still figuring things out, but I’ll be going down soon."

Thompson talked to Charlie Strong on junior day even though he couldn’t make it, and he was disappointed Thompson wasn’t going to be able to make it.

“He just told me to keep grinding, and he was kind of sad I didn’t make it because he wanted to see me.”

Thompson is close friends with Texas signee Brandon Jones, and if a Texas offer comes his way you can expect Texas will have a leg up. Look for Thompson to make his way to Austin during spring practice.

+++++

Here are some quick recruiting tidbits we picked up throughout the week.

Crosby WR Mannie Netherly picked up a junior day offer. We spoke to a source close to his recruitment, and we were told that the offer definitely grabbed his attention. The source told us specifically that “Texas is going to have to recruit their asses off.” Simply put, Netherly is very comfortable with the coaching staff at A&M, and he will be tough to pry away. We were told Netherly really likes the new offense, so that could be something in the Longhorns’ favor.
Crosby 2018 RB Craig “Sqwirl” Williams made the trip to Austin with Netherly, and Texas made a big impression on him according to the same source. “He enjoyed it, but he didn’t get a chance to speak with Charlie. He likes UT.” It looks like this is lining up to be another Texas and A&M battle. The Aggies have been hard after Williams, and they’ve recruited him more early on in the process.
La Grange RB JK Dobbins pulled off a surprise commitment to Ohio State over the weekend. In talking to a couple of different sources, it’s tough to get a good read on this one. One still felt strongly that Texas would be the team to beat on signing day, while another told us he didn’t expect Dobbins to be a guy that makes multiple commitments. I don’t think Charlie Strong is worried with the way he recruits, and if Texas can find some success on offense this year it gives him momentum to close. It also opens up the door for other options like Eno Benjamin or Kennedy Brooks. Obviously having one of your top guys commit to another school isn’t idea, but it’s still very early in this one.
Lancaster WR Omar Manning is one of the hottest prospects out there. He’s gone from a relative unknown, to one of the most coveted players in the nation over the last few months. Manning first emerged when he dominated in the Texas high school playoffs last season, but schools started to take notice of him in February. Texas was a bit late to the party, but they finally came through with an offer last week. We were able to catch up with Manning briefly to get some thoughts from him.

On what the Texas offer means to him:

“It means a lot. It’s the state team, it has a lot of tradition. It’s awesome, I talked to Coach Strong himself”.

On Texas waiting to offer hurt them in his recruitment:

“Well the old staff didn’t really recruit me, so at first yes. As soon as the new staff got there they jumped right on me.”

“It was a great day (Texas' Junior Day) – a productive day,” Murray said. “I came in with one goal – to find out where I’m at in the process with them and let them know where I’m at in the process. I think I accomplished that.”

“They said that they were pretty much 90 percent sure that they were going to offer me,” Murray said. "They want to get a look at me in the spring because they really like how I blitz off the edge, but in their system they want me to play more of a Mike or Will backer."

“I think they’re building a great program,” Murray said. “I think the past few years it’s been kind of shaky and not too many people have been believing in them, but I see something great coming from Texas."

I guess that means Major T is rolling to Alabama. As long as its not Sam, Lagaryon, or Damiion I'm ok. Funny thing, on 247 our overall ranking will go down, but our ranking per player will go up.

Last year Alabama took 3 TEs, and now they are going after Major. I'm guessing he is a hell of a player to get such an early offer from Alabama.

I would love for Texas to start pulling players from Bama, starting with Dylan Moses and working our way through their class.

I've seen a lot of comparisons to Isaac Nauta the TE that signed with Georgia that flirted with Texas when the Georgia coach was fired.

I've watched him in person for two years. Let's just hope he can fix his drop problem if he does come to Texas. He blew a couple of game changing plays because of it last season. I'll get to see him up close again this season, so we'll see.

Texas wide receiver Damion Miller told me he’s having second thoughts about his ‘commitment strengthening’ comments last week. Miller plans to visit Ole Miss on April 9, is involved in a group chat with Texas A&M recruits and hopes to make a trip to Alabama. Right now, his commitment to UT is soft

Quote from TE Major Tennison after his Alabama visit (24/7):

“I feel like my commitment is still the same,” Tennison said. “I still love the Texas Longhorns. I still love Coach Strong and Coach Traylor just as much as I did before the Alabama visit. I’m going to go watch a spring practice of theirs and their spring game. I still am very much committed to Texas and all that stuff.”

24/7 posted some other notes from The Opening regional in Dallas today:

-TCU is no longer considered the favorite for WR Omar Manning of Lancaster.

-WR Camron Buckley of Cedar Hill says UT is "around the top" of his list.

-OL Tyrese Robinson of McKinney Boyd says his interest in UT is "high" and plans on attending a spring practice.

-UT is essentially out of the picture with OL Edward Ingram of DeSoto and he plans on making a spring decision.

-2018 QB Jalen Mayden of Sachse really wants a UT offer and he plans on returning to Austin in the spring.

OL Tyrese Robinson of McKinney Boyd talks about UT (24/7):

“The academics were a big reason (for committing to OU),” Robinson said. “They have a lot of tutors that help you out. I have great relationships with Coach (Bob) Stoops and Coach (Bill) Bedenbaugh. They have a great coaching staff. They put people in the NFL. I feel like part of the family.”

“Texas has been recruiting me hard,” Robinson said. “I like Texas. I have a lot of respect for Texas and what Coach Strong has been doing up there. They also have a great coaching staff, and I like where the program is going. They are turning it around.”

“Coach Mattox actually came by my school right before signing day,” Robinson said. “I think he’s a nice coach. We’ve been talking on and off since I committed to Oklahoma. He’s just told me that I need to get down there so he can change my mind.”

“I want to see them (Texas) win,” Robinson said. “Texas is so inconsistent, and winning is a big factor for me. But I do feel with the recruits that they brought in and Coach Strong, it’s going to change. I’m going to pay close attention.”

Not yet, but I think they will eventually.

The staff is out of the office this week, so news is slow.

Update on DE Earnest Brown of Denton Ryan (24/7):

“It (Texas' Junior Day) went really well,” Brown said. “I got to talk to Coach Strong a lot. He just told me that he could see me as being a great fit with the program. He said they were going to keep recruiting me hard, which was good to hear. I liked him.”

“I like them,” Brown said. “I know that the coaching staff really cares about academics. I like Coach Strong a lot and the way he runs his program. I could see myself playing for him in the future. So I do have interest in Texas for sure.”

“Right now, Northwestern is really the school standing out to me,” Brown said. “I really liked my visit and the academics. I’m also looking hard at Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Texas is also in there.”

Quotes from five-star S Jeffrey Okudah of South Grand Prairie (24/7):

“Coach (Clay) Jennings, Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach (Vance) Bedford all reached out to me a couple of days ago and let me know that I’m a top priority on the board,” Okudah said. “That meant a lot to me. I think they are all great coaches, and I appreciate how honest they are.”

“It’s (winning games) really important,” Okudah said. “I want to be a part of a winning team. I think everybody does. I want to be able to help a team win a national championship and play against the best competition. It’s really important to see them win.”

“Most schools I talk to want me as a versatile corner,” Okudah said. “They want me to do a little bit of everything kind of like Jalen Ramsey did at Florida State. They feel I can play any spot in the secondary. And I feel I can do that as well.”
