View Full Version : 2019 Texas Longhorns Recruiting Thread
A few thougts:
- Ingram as a freshman is the best player on O. Why do the coaches continuously pull him when it’s apparent we move the ball with him in there better than any of the other backs?
He is not fully healthy, that's why. He's arguably the 2nd best player on offense but they are clearly limited his touches to allow him to get healthier. If we're lucky he'll get many more touches against OU.

What happened to the class of 2019 in-state recruiting? We only landed 1 of the top 9? Although the 2 in the top 10 that we did get are solid.

Ingram needs to be in the game as much as possible against OU catching balls and running. The other RBs just don’t present a credible threat on their own. We will get guys open so Ehlinger better hit them and no drops. We are going to need to turnovers as well.
No game we have played so far is enough to beat OU imo. We can’t have these stagnant moments on offense, and the big defensive lapses in coverage or producing zero presssure series. We gotta beat their guys up front.

This game has always been a wildcard. We have beat them before with a less talented team. And lost to them when we had a better team. Sam needs to have a good game. We have the receivers. He is only a sophomore, but that kid is tough. We can beat them, but we will need the ball to bounce our way. Gonna be a badass game ! Hookem !

Billybass. You can take records, talent and expectations out of rivalry games like this. Period!.. That's what makes it so great! Plus Herman knows how to get this Team up for the big ones! Sam will come thru and blowU better buckle up that chinstrap extremely tight, because Texas will be head hunting on Saturday!!!

You guys do realize that if Texas beats Oklahoma it is going to cause a major shift in recruiting in the state and make Texas a major threat for some of the big time guys left on our radar this year and next. I'm also hoping it gets the attention of a couple offensive linemen that committed to Oklahoma over Texas.
This game is a must win for Texas for recruiting purposes, but it's Oklahoma that has all the pressure, they are the ones undefeated but everyone knows they haven't played anyone yet. Pressure is on them to prove they are worthy of a playoff spot.

I couldn't find a tweet on this so I will keep looking, but a reporter from the Statesman supposedly mentioned RB Kyle Porter did not travel with the team to Manhattan and is looking into transferring.
My guess is the staff will definitely pursue another RB for the '19 class even if they don't land Cain or Sanders.

I know Army has a running game that the opposition is not used to but they gave it to Oklahoma in a big way. Our offensive line is getting better. We are not going to be able to ball control like the Knights did, but we do have the capability of beating them up. If we can fluster K. Murray as wel... And we still have not produced a complete game.
It’s time.

This was what I was referring to when I asked about Toneil the other day he seemed to have flashed as a freshman last year before Danny came on and now he’s absolutely not played at all. I thought it was bold to not keep him in the mix with Watson moving on and Porter seemingly being recruited over. I have a little hope that maybe the staff has Carter sold on redshirting this year, I’ve seen him on the sidelines and in post game celebrations and he appears very tuned in as if he has not lost interest in being at Texas.

It would be sweet as syrup to win over the sooners, especially for recruiting. But even better to win the conference, and even better to arrive at the playoffs fully prepared to wreck shop.
If you think this team is elite, then of course it's a must win game. But I don't see it..yet.

I can see Texas beating blOwU
I can see Texas beating West Virgina
I can See Texas playing for the Conference
Maybe I can see Texas winning the conference.
I cannot see Texas finishing the season undefeated, nor can I see them in the playoffs. There are 4 teams right now that deserve to be in the playoffs, Bama, Georgia, and Ohio State and Clemson. We will see about Oklahoma this weekend, but for now those are my picks. For me That would be a successful season and enough progress to know that Tom Herman has this program going in the right direction. It will also be enough to get us in a excellent bowl game.
This rebuilding process was always a long term thing, I knew it was going to take 4 full cycles to get the right guys in place to compete and so far things are looking up, but we have huge holes to fill still especially along the oline and dline. That is what it is going to take to compete with Bama, and Georgia and the rest of those playoff teams.

If Penn State didn't get kicked out of the B1G for their scandal, then I highly doubt that the big 12 would kick out Baylor, however if they did, they better add BYU, that might be the only program we can be sure of that won't have a situation like this.
A much more fitting punishment is the Death Penalty. One year no football at all, then they can start fresh.

I asked her about the UT trip he took and she said they had hummers, flashy cars lots to loud music.... etc... fwiw not implying these were players cars. I wasn't sure what she was referring to. Huff and Ross sometimes have their cars up there on recruiting visits, so maybe that's what she was talking about.
Huff's Lambo has been talked about on players' social media quite a bit, and other NFL guys are at the facilities working out during the offseason.

For all you big football brains out there, this is random but I’m guessing Beck has had a huge impact on our run game? I’m assuming he’s helping a lot in the run game as a blocker? His reception numbers aren’t huge and Brewer is a much bigger threat in the passing game. Kinda wish we still had that threat from the TE position. Wonder if they throw in a package with both guys on the field at once?

I'm no expert, but I believe run improvement has been more contributed to-
1.) Herb Hand
2.) K. Ingram
3.) OL is pretty healthy compared to last year, including Beck at TE.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Herman do a little more with the TE this week. However, OU weaknesses are at their corner backs. Ehlinger's going to have chances deep this week and hopefully he connects on a few of them.

Quotes from 2020 DE Princely Umanmielen of Manor (24/7):
“It felt really good to get the Texas offer,” Umanmielen said. “I’ve been patiently waiting on that one for a while. My interest level with them is pretty high. I have a great relationship with Coach (Oscar) Giles.”
“I think they're doing great so far,” he said. “They should’ve beat Maryland no questions asked. But that’s in the past, and I feel like that loss is driving them more. I want to see them go to the Big 12 championship.”
“I like both a lot,” Umanmielen said. “I have a stronger relationship with the Texas coaches just because they’re so close, and I go up there so much. But I talk to Coach (Calvin Thibodeaux) and (Lincoln) Riley on the phone all the time. They really make me feel wanted. They both have great programs.”

Jett Duffey did a decent job running the ball but goddammit he sucks at passing and is a turnover machine.
Carter is a game manager type but you guys saw how limited he is in physical attributes which is why Kliff had to ultimately yank him in the 2nd half against the horns.
I guess if Alan is cleared against the frogs then yeah he's gonna go.

From Inside Texas...they are saying don't be surprised if we start reading more about DE/DT Marcus Stripling of Katy Mayde Creek.
They're hearing that A&M and OU are starting to look elsewhere and/or they're tired of waiting on him to commit.
His plan has always been to visit UT before making a decision, but he hasn't been on campus since February and they believe LSU has the lead.

Well, the report did say Texas would have to put a lot of work in and get him on campus first.
Kliff hired the South Oak Cliff coach a few years back (you probably already know that), so that has made Parker's commitment strong and why he's been totally off the radar despite being a legit prospect.
He apparently leads the Dallas area in sacks currently.

2020 RB Zach Evans on the win (from 24/7): "Expect the unexpected. It's a rivalry game for a reason."
I don't know what to make of Evans. He was thought to be a Texas lean in the Spring, but pretty much all the quotes from him this fall have, at best, been lukewarm. I wonder if he is trying to change the perception of him being a Texas lean, to make his recruitment more interesting, or if is he genuinely not a fan of what Texas puts on the field this season?

Texas holding calls late were blatant, obvious and dumb. Particularly the hold by Shackleford on the drive at the end to run the clock down. Ingram made 13 yards for a first down and the hold it seemed to me was behind the play and Shack just stuck his arm out to get an obvious flag. Yes , the officials can see stuff if they want but I thought several of those were obvious and did affect the play.

Yes , there is a lot beef pushing, shifting, and moving around in the trenches and sometimes a lineman is going to get caught as leverages change , but I do think cleaning up some of those silly ,obvious holds is a next step for the Oline to make. But again they bounced back for the game winning drive. These guys are being coached and are responding and will continue to get better. What a great and fun game. agreed about the play you're talking about. Was more just talking in general and out of bias and frustration :lol Just seemed convenient to me that when UT got backed up on their side of the field they got a holding that gifted OU that first TD on their comeback. The holding calls just always seem to come at such critical moments. Would need to see the play again.
I still think refs have far too much control of games with holding penalties. I'd actually like to see it turned into a 5 yard penalty rather than 10.

Herman is looking good on his mantra of no turnovers.
Oklahoma D is horrific.
We finally get to see that our two new safeties are really freshman.
How is it that I absolutely knew we would score on the last drive, but I had to worry about how fast we would score. Cmon D for gosh sakes, yards after trying to tackle, and huge mistakes with wide open receivers.
We have to do a lot of fancy things to get pressure on the QB, which leads us to vulnerability on the run.
Despite some really bad holds and misses picking up blitzes, our offensive line basically mauled them. That was a pure pummeling when they did not bring the House.
It would be really nice to have a competent shifty slot to complement Duvernay’s raw speed, and Johnson/Humphrey catching about everything. Also a legit fast TE that can block... instead of just block. But so much better than last year at TE. Thank you Beck.
We got a FRESHMAN kicker with a live leg. Back to an old tradition.
WE FN won again on the last drive. But this time we needed to score and did, not just run the time out.
We can win without playing our A game. Admit it Tom. There has been NO A game. That went away 3rd qrt again.

The safeties definitely are young and learning but let’s not take away from Kyler he’s the ultimate athlete. They’d bite on his suddenness and capability to run and get out of the pocket. I think in a normal situation against a QB with less speed you don’t have to worry about the fear of losing containment. I’m sure Orlando and Herman drilled them on not getting beat by Kylers legs but he’s got an arm at some point you pick your poison. Awesome win!

Nice post and well said. Kyler showed me he is a special athlete. An elite passer and an elite runner. 99% of the time you get elite on one and avg on the other.
I think Texas is starting to get the offense rolling and playing to their strengths. This Texas defense is a good defense, but not great. They have a good DB group, a good LB group and an avg DL. The DL is good against the run but subpar in pass rush. There will be a game when the O and D are clicking together. I believe the defense will be better next year and the offense will be a lot better. Surebthey're losing 2 veteran LBs and 2 good CBs, but I think the talent behind them is better or equal. I'm extremely excited for 2019, but enjoying everything they do in 2018.

They made some big mistakes helping in coverage, tackling. I will let the Murray mistakes go because the guy has incredible shifty speed. Humbling should make you better. Hope we get 3 more years out of both of them. I’m also expecting Overshown to become extremely useful as an LB who can cover next year. I want to see him on the field this year when healthy. As Vito said, we made some incredibly good recruiting moves 2018. Hopefully Cook and some others come through at CB next year.
D. Davis is gradually making a case for becoming our most reliable corner. I hope others note that playing as a senior and thereby showing you are physically and mentally advanced can help in the draft.

If Texas can win out and has convincing wins, by at least 14 against every opponent, does it have a shot at the playoffs?

Honestly, I dont think so. Alabama is in, Georgia will likely be a 1 loss team to Alabama in the SEC championship, Notre Dame has no one else on their schedule so they'll likely be undefeated, and Ohio State and Clemson will probably be undefeated as well. Bascially, it's Bama and 3 of those 4 I mentioned.
