Some notes from the official visit weekend (24/7)...

-UT hit a "grand slam" with DT DeMarvin Leal of Converse Judson with everything from the JMBLYA music festival to hanging out at the lake. He also spent a lot of time with S Caden Sterns since the families know each other and they played in the same district for years. Leal's parents are sold if he does want to flip to UT down the line, but it's obviously his decision and the UT staff will continue to recruit him as a priority prospect. Coach Washington and Carrington will have the lead.

-Texas remains in the lead for LB Makiya Tongue of Baton Rouge, LA. He was hosted by WR Jordan Pouncey and spent a lot of time with Coach Mehringer since that's the position he'd like to begin his college career.

-TE Brayden Liebrock of Chandler, AZ also enjoyed his time on campus. He plans on making a decision this month and Arizona State is supposedly the biggest competition. He took an official visit there the weekend before and has family ties to the program.

You mean to say you would eliminate a school because of the field they played on? No you wouldn't. There are lots of reasons to pick a school and none of them are the field. I played on both and it isn't a big deal, hell I even played in a playoff game at the Astrodome, and that field really did suck, it was astro turf with big holes in it. All you do is change your shoes, in my case I went from wearing cleats to wearing my Air Jordan basketball sneakers.

I could see a professional like Adrian Peterson making a choice and considering the field as a determining factor, but for 99.9% of the kids out there, it isn't even a consideration.

While USC seemed to be on the outside looking in for Chandler (Ariz.) four-star tight end Bryaden Liebrock, who committed to Texas this week, the Trojans have been among Scottsdale (Ariz.) four-star wide receiver Jake Smith’s favorite schools since the beginning of his recruitment. However, as it stands, Texas appears to be the clear leader for Smith heading into his official visit later this month.

USC is Smith’s dream school, which is why he wants to give the Trojans another chance. But as it stands, Texas has a big lead for his commitment and the Longhorns are slated to get their own official visit from Smith a week or two after he visits Los Angeles. Tim Beck, who actually coached at Saguaro High School from 1993-1995, is the lead recruiter for Texas. From what we hear, fit is probably the biggest issue for Smith with USC. These seem more like scrimmages to get to see backups or possibly recover from tough conference games. It seems the SEC usually has schedules one gimme fairly late in the season ( possibly the reset get well game) The big 12 is largely all conference games late.

Not counting DBs for good reason, outside of Leal, there isn't a player committed I lose sleep over. Now Oklahoma is doing some damage and I am very concerned about them.

The big battles in recruiting between Texas and Aggy is really on the Oline, none of which have committed yet. I predict you will get Kenyon Green, Texas will get Tyler Johnson, and Branson Bragg, and it's a toss up who gets Javonne Shephard. I’m not going to lose sleep on this Banks recruitment, but there is something pretty shady going on and it’s so freaking obvious. Thank goodness we took a hell of a DB class last year and maybe that had something to do with this recruitment, but I highly doubt it. I always liked Banks upside as a prospect, but losing him to Aggy is not the end all. There’s several other DBs out there that have the potential and may even be better long term than Banks as a prospect.
