He didn't. This isn't the first time he mentions Shepherd. A few weeks ago he said that you could make a case for Shepherd as the number 1 player in the country. He keeps coming back to "He can be as good as he wants to, or bad". He really, really likes Shepherds upside.

My thoughts on Today

1. Getting Johnson should seal the deal for Texas linebackers. probably one of the top 5 recruiting units in the nation.

2. Thoughts on Shepherd as one of the top players in the country. Sometimes its not a matter of talent but what you do with it. In the beginning of this cycle I was tripping over myself wanting Texas to get him. He is a legit 6'6 to 6'7 and he was clocked under 5.0 in the 40. For an OT he has it all, long arms, big frame to add good weight. He will get the coaching, what matters most of all is if he accepts the coaching. Can he check his ego and become both coachable and become a leader. This is what separates Shepherd from the best of the best. It's also what separates a lot of talented kids from true greatness.

3. Trey Sanders is a true showman, he is going to milk this to the end and there are going to be some really sad fans at 3 schools.

4. I just don't know about Cain, seems one day the reports are good, next they are bad.

5. Higgins is going to Stanford, I have no doubt of this, you don't pass up an opportunity to go to Stanford for free.

6. If Justin Fields is interested in transferring, then I hope we go in on it, he is a game changer and I don't care who we have on campus, he will beat them out. Seriously, how can he not pick blOwU, Heisman QB is moving on and their next best guy is a freshmen. It's almost gift wrapped for him.

Amazing how we are 3 years removed from a 2000 yard rusher and still can't recruit a high end RB. Next year is the litmus paper test for this staff. We better start to see bigger and better results. People can't name the long list of 2-3 stars that don't pan out because they are not supposed to. But guys like JJ Watt are front page news. The kid has a ton of physical development to go through, but is apparently a good athlete. And he is being developed for a very specific kind of physical activity, blocking. Crap shoot. We like his length, his agility. But I would rather have Walker Little. Unfortunately he is in California. But we are in no position to pass on the OL like Alabama. So...

It's a bit early to determine the keys to success next year.

With that said, the biggest weakness this year was the defense took a step back from last year. Hard to say how it will perform next year with so many new faces. I think we will not see a drop off in the production of our DEs, in fact I expect to see improved performance now that Hager is gone. In the middle I think you will see both Ojomo and Coburn improve the play there. I really like Ojomo now that he is 18 or is he 17? Linebackers is a big question, we have talent but is it enough? In the secondary we have some badass safeties, but our corners are suspect. I'm hoping our young guys can step up and make DBU what it once was.

This defense will go as far as our run defense will allow us to go. That is my key to success.
