I'm starting to like Devon Allen more as recruit. Good film and elite speed. Once it's over between Texas and Robbie Rhodes, I think Allen is the logical next move.

Nothing that I know of with Rhodes. I don't think Texas is going to cut off all communication with him because most know that Baylor is going to have a very tough time following up their 2011 season even if they have a decent year.

Excerpts from "Rivals Challenge: Southwest lessons learned"

http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1379172

1. Ricky Seals-Jones (http://oregonstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=124950) can play
The biggest question for the Southwest team, and maybe for the Challenge overall, coming into the weekend was whether Sealy (Texas) wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones (http://oregonstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=124950) could actually play the position. The nation's No. 1 receiver prospect, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Texan plays quarterback and safety for his high school team. After a very subpar showing on Saturday, Seals-Jones rebounded on Sunday as the top performer for his team. It still remains to be seen whether he might grow into a tight end at the next level, but he showed he can get behind defenders and catch the ball in traffic.

2. Tyrone Swoopes (http://oregonstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=124071) has made strides.
Five-star quarterback Swoopes of Whitewright, Texas is ranked so highly mainly based on potential. The Texas commit was seen as an extraordinary athlete with a great arm but lacking the touch and accuracy of the other passers at the event. While he had his ups and downs, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound passer made improvements as Sunday's 7-on-7 action went on. He was more comfortable making reads and checking down and also was not afraid to try and fit balls into smaller windows. For a quarterback who was not able to showcase his primary weapon in his legs, he had a great weekend. He truly has the potential to be a star for the Longhorns.

It's encouraging that he did pretty well considering he couldn't run and I imagine his ability to use his legs on the college level will open up his passing game that much more. Nothing worse than when your team plays a QB who can scramble to the line of scrimmage, pull the defense in and then dump it.

Good question and I'm not sure what the answer is. He's just been flirting with others schools since he went to Baylor for RG3's Pro Day. He's also been to A&M at least one time and he had talked about going to Arkansas. Hopefully the rumors are false.

Hard to shoot down that possibility since Hall is originally from Washington and that's where he's spending the summer. UW can't offer what Texas can defensively but Lupoi is a stud on the recruiting trail.

I'm really curious what's going on if the staff knew Hall was going to de-commit but still put things on hold with Alfred. That leaves you with ZERO true defensive line commitments if you take out Raulerson and Robinson who don't have a specific position yet.

I think he's even considering moving back to Seattle for his senior season. That rumor was floating around a couple of months ago but got shot down. Hard to fault him for wanting to go home. He's going to be a stud for someone.

Quotes from DE Daeshon Hall (HornsNation):

"I've opened it up a bit," Hall said. "It was difficult. I just want to be close to home. I'm still open to any opportunities, but I'd like to be closer to home."

"It's (Texas) still a school I'm going to consider," he said. "They're still near the top of my list."

"I had been thinking about [decommitting] for a long time," Hall said, "but I just wanted to make sure that was what I wanted to do. I feel like it's the best thing for me to do so I can look back and see if I really want to go to Texas or not."

"I just want to make it to the next level in something," he said. "Playing basketball would be cool, but my main choice would be football."

“That's the only reason I'm decommitting is because it's pretty far from my family,” Hall said.

Also, is it just me or is Hall way too skinny to be a DE

Unless UT has a sleeper prospect in mind, I don't see where they'd go in-state at the high school level. Like I mentioned above, JUCO has to be an option but it's weird that things are temporarily on hold with Alfred knowing that Hall was out the door. Hopefully they can find a difference maker out-of-state whose recruitment is still open (much like they did with WR Devon Allen).

First player who comes to mind is DE Marcus Farria of Centennial, AZ.
If I remember correctly, his name was mentioned sometimes in last years thread. I don't know how open his recruitment are, but he's the first who comes to my mind. Maybe even one of the other JUCO linemen, Marcus Hardison?

I, somehow, hope this open things up with Mike Mitchell.

Yes, I like Daeshon Hall quite a bit as a prospect. Yes it's a hit to the 2013 class. If Hall develops his body and his game, he'll play in the NFL.

Alfred (if it happens) alone won't be enough. If Texas strikes out in 2013, the Texas staff must do well in 2014. Thomas, Roberson, and Garrett might go from best 2 of 3, to a necessary 3 out of 3.

You can't fault Hall for staying with his family. Thank goodness his folks might be getting back together. I wish them all the best.

The best prescription for off season blues is booking trips. I just booked Ole Miss and I feel much better.

He recently listed his top 5 of USC, Notre Dame, UNC, Kentucky, and West Virginia. And he has offers across the country including Bama, FSU, etc. He did throw out below quotes which sound okay, but that said I wouldn't hold your breath for a New Jersey kid that is being recruited across the country.

"Absolutely I’d be interested in Texas. The city of Austin is a great place and I’ve enjoyed myself here. I don’t know that much about Texas, but I’d definitely be interested in learning more about them."

"I’ve got a top five, but if Texas started recruiting me things would change. Like I said, all I know right now is the campus is nice, the city is great, and the burnt orange is everywhere.

"I like it," said the 6-3, 230-pounder. "I'm glad that I had a chance to come out to Austin with Team USA and it just shows me that even though this wasn't a Texas camp or anything like that, they're always watching, so I always have to perform to my highest ability."

"I talked to the receivers coach, coach Wyatt. Tomorrow my parents will actually be taking a tour of the campus, the academic side.

He said that he had gotten to the game because his son is the receiver [Desmond Wyatt]. He liked my intensity and the way that I got to the quarterback, so he wants to show me what Texas has to offer."

"I have a top five right now, but I'm definitely willing to look into other schools -- that's nothing new," he made clear. "Even though I have the top five, if a new school comes in, I'll definitely give them my interest to see what they're all about."

I think we saw this one coming. Getting Alfred will be important. Possibly close up shop for this year at DE if Alfred comes on board. I say pursue the NJ kid or any other late bloomers/off radar kids at a bonus. The horns are looking good at DE with next year's class. 3 or 4 possible blue chippers are possible at the position.

Hope everyone is well and had a great 4th. Had to take a brief hiatus but I'm back and catching up on everything. Great news on DE Dajuan Drennon and hopefully the staff will have some luck there if they think he's an impact player. Per 24/7, there's another JUCO prospect the staff is looking at in DE Randy Gregory of Arizona Western JC who is currently committed to Purdue and signed with them out of high school (he's from Indiana):

“The contact from Texas was kind of out of nowhere,” Gregory told Hookem.com. “My head coach here at Arizona Western actually texted me early one morning and told me to give Coach (Oscar) Giles a call at Texas. It kind of surprised me because, up until that point, I hadn’t really heard from a big school such as Texas ever. No school that big had ever contacted me before, so it really surprised me.”

“I called him quickly after that and we talked for about 30 minutes,” said Gregory. “We had a good conversation. He wanted to introduce himself, talk for a little bit and start building a relationship with me. He said they were looking at me, would be recruiting me and an offer could come down the road if everything all worked out.”

“Coach Giles basically said they wanted one or two guys who could come in after this upcoming season and be ready to play,” Gregory said. “There’s a good chance they could lose Alex Okafor and Jackson Jeffcoat after this season, so they want someone to come in and fill their roles. He said I could be that guy. He thought a lot of what I could do and said I have the talent to help out.”

“One thing Coach Diaz really stressed was the situation I could be coming into if I came to Texas,” explained Gregory. “He told me to look at where their guys are right now and where they might be after this season. Once he explained that, he said that it would be pretty easy to see myself fitting in their defense right away, the following year. They want a guy who can put his hand in ground and rusher the passer and that’s really what I can do the best. That’s what I like to do, so he was telling me that everything looks like it would work out well for me there.”

“I hit him (Manny Diaz) up on Facebook about a few things,” he said. “We talked about my situation with Purdue, since I’m committed to them right now. We also talked about me getting out of school in December, enrolling somewhere else and getting ready to get after it and start playing. They want whoever they get to come in right away and start to help. That’s also what I want to do, so it was good getting to speak to him about that.”

“We’ve already talked about getting down there to Austin,” Gregory said. “Since I haven’t been offered yet, an official visit hasn’t been brought up, but that could obviously change. I definitely want to take a trip down there though. The coaches said if I had the money for it, I could do an unofficial visit pretty much anytime, but I don’t know if I can work that out just yet. I think that once I get to looking at our football schedule here and then they’re schedule, I’ll get something worked out to where I can go visit. I really want to take it all in and see the campus, the facilities, meet the coaches and everything like that, so I will be getting down there for sure, I just don’t know when exactly.”

“I’ve always liked Texas’ program,” Gregory told Hookem.com. “Every Saturday I watch football, so I’d always run across their games and watch them. I love the conference they’re in and enjoy watching them play those teams. I just think that Texas has something special going on down there and they’re a top program. I’d like to be a part of that and I want to play for a top program. I want to win and play for a championship. Texas is a school I can do that at, so they’re definitely one I’m really considering.”

Think he is pretty high on FSU

He's close with TE Christian Morgan who recently committed to FSU, so there's that angle to consider. That would be kind of weird considering his family grew up big Florida fans and are originally from there. Mods on OrangeBloods think Ohio State has the inside track. For those that haven't seen the SPARQ testing results from The Opening this weekend, Mitchell won the event and broke the record with 154 overall points and finished with a 4.39 40-yard dash and a 40"+ vertical.

More from WR Devon Allen of Phoenix, AZ who is still planning to visit UT in the near future (24/7):

“I had the chance to speak with Coach (Darrell) Wyatt about 45 minutes or so recently,” Allen explained. “We had a really good conversation. He told me that they were very interested in me and liked what all they saw. Coach Wyatt actually heard about me from someone else he knows, one of his coaching friends I believe, and he got a hold of my film. He passed the film throughout the Texas coaching staff and everyone approved of it. So, like I said, they are very interested and want me to get out there to Texas for a visit.”

“The coaches explained to me that with their recruiting class for this year, they don’t need many more players. Coach Wyatt said the scholarships are very limited, but that if I’m very interested, then there would be no problem getting offered. They want me to come down and see it all and then we’ll go from there. But, if I want to play there, it sounds like it would all be good,” said Allen.

“I definitely want to go visit, so we’re trying to get out there soon,” Allen told Hookem.com. “It’s not too terribly far away from me, so it would be a cheap flight or a little bit of a road trip. We’re looking to do it sometime soon actually. I have some other schools I’m going to visit later this month, but then we will look at the schedule and pick a date. I’m thinking somewhere in August, for what could be an unofficial visit or even in September for an official visit. Either way, I’m ready to check them out.”

“I’ve been speaking to the track coaches too,” Allen explained. “Like I said before, they have such a great track program there, so that’s a really big plus. We’ve been talking through Facebook, but I haven’t had a chance to talk to them on the phone. They’re going to try and get a hold of me soon for an in-home visit with me. They told me they would love to have me, just like Coach Wyatt did.”

“If I want to go to school there and play both sports, it sounds like there’d be no problem doing so,” said Allen. “Coach Wyatt told me they would have absolutely no problem with me running track either. They said they would be completely fine with that, if that’s what I wanted to do. And that’s what I want to try and do, so that’s really big for me. That stands out a lot.”

Especially the last part:
Somewhat amused at the number of fathers from Florida and throughout SEC country that all expressed dismay that they never heard from Texas. Whether their protestations were sincere or not (and I think it varied), Texas is definitely perceived as a coveted scholarship - an important scalp on the recruiting pole. It was a good reminder that we should be looking out of state aggressively when we can't find the players we need at a certain position. Texans can have a parochial perspective with respect to state talent levels across the board - sometimes rightfully - but attending something like The Opening is a good check on that assumption.

I read a tweet that he was held out of certain parts of The Opening due to a concussion. I don't know if the injury was before or after he ran the 40 but that could be an explanation for the slow time since he has had better outings in the past.

Quotes from OL/DL A'Shawn Robinson at The Opening (OrangeBloods):

"I'm just trying to show them that I can compete with anybody out here. I can play harder than anybody out here," Robinson said.

"I'll get down to 300 or 290 sometimes," Robinson said. "But it's good. I've turned it into muscle so I feel good with the weight. I've been working out with my team, doing 7-on-7, basketball, everything I can to work on my footwork and my hands."

"I haven't talked to anybody about going to a camp. I'm still good with Texas. It's still 100 percent," he said.

"The coaching staff, the players, the overall atmosphere," Robinson said when asked what led him to give UT an early commitment. "I talk to coach Bo about once a week. Our relationship is good. He's a good coach. He's a hard-working coach. He believes I can do whatever I want if I put my mind to it."

"I still get other schools trying to recruit me. They facebook me. I message them back but I'm with Texas," Robinson said.

It's pretty cool that Scipio went to The Opening.

Interesting comments. They certainly reflect what Clowney and Winston said in recent years. Clowney's comments didn't feel sincere (adding pelts to the wall), but Winston's interest appeared genuine. I don't think Texas should shotgun offers Bama style, but if a Southeast kid sends them a video or reaches out to the staff, he needs to be recruited. All it takes is one to start a pipeline (look at all the Florida kids on West Virginia's roster, there's 21 of them). Hopefully it starts with Marcell Harris.

I also agree with this comment from Scip: "This camp has done little to dissuade my view that Texas should be all over Southern California when we choose to look OOS. Cali churns out good kids and the competitive recruiting environment is comparatively anemic compared to SEC country."

Texas isn't going to beat USC for a LA kid, but the Texas staff should be hitting San Diego and Northern California hard. I like what the staff has done in Arizona. There's no reason that Texas shouldn't recruit the top 2-3 kids in Arizona every year.

Good read. If this past spring evaluation period is any indication of how this staff plans on recruiting now that they've settled in, it appears as if they want to cast a pretty wide net or at the very least target several top tier guys from around the country regardless of what the in-state talent looks like. They even scouted the JUCO ranks pretty well as we've never seen that many names on the radar.

Kid impresses wherever he goes it seems. He even caught Mack's eye when he camped at Texas in June. He'll get that offer from UT in February. Some recent quotes from him (24/7):

“I liked Texas the best (of all the summer camps),” Cannon said. “They got started early and it was intense all day. It was a big school and they did a good job. It adds weight for them in how I look at them.”

“They were all great coaches and they were fun to be around all day,” Cannon said. “I felt like I got better when I left Texas.”

“It was better than I thought it was going to be,” Cannon said. “It's still big, but it's a real good school. It's not as much of a factor as I thought it was going to be.”

“Texas would be a great school for me to go to,” Cannon said. “There are good people there, I like the coaches, and I feel like Texas is a place that will make me better.”

"The layout was different because at Oklahoma everything is right there close together and it's spread out at Texas,” Cannon said. “The thing I like about both schools though is that I love both coaching staffs. Both are great.”

“I've already looked at that a little bit (the QBs at different schools),” Cannon said. “The guy going to Texas – Tyrone Swoopes – he's a guy I think a lot of people would like to play with.”

“We have a lot of great athletes here in the 2014 class and we should be fun to watch,” Cannon said. “I just want to do the best I can and see if we can win a state championship.”

Raulerson looks like a center. I think Robinson stays at DT. To complicate things more, I like Darius James film at DT better than his offensive tape. Latest with OL Caleb Benenoch from 24/7. He has a visit to Stanford scheduled for July 22nd and 23rd. They could be a big threat to Texas if they offer because of the family's emphasis on academics.

“About 60 percent of the reason (for waiting to commit is my parents),” Benenoch said. “They're a huge part.”

“If they have my major, if they have good academic standing and how successful are they at getting guys to the league,” Benenoch said.

“I think the tip of the hand would be how I feel when I go up there,” Benenoch said. “When it comes to those last couple of days there's always that school that you'll keep thinking about. That's what it's going to come down to at the end of the day is how you feel. My parents may love it but I still have to feel it in my gut that it's the right place. I'm waiting for that feeling.”

“I liked it a lot,” Drennon said. “The city of Austin was beautiful, the weather down here was nice and everything here was nice.”

“There were no cons,” Drennon said. “She (Drennon's mother) said everything was nice and she said everything was great. If I did wind up committing there, my mom said she'd have no problem with me going there because of the academic support. That's big for her. From their point of view, Texas gets an 'A', easy.”

“He (Darrell Wyatt) seemed like a good guy from what they told me,” Drennon said. “He was real nice and showed them everything they wanted to see.”

More from JUCO DE Randy Gregory of Arizona Western JC (24/7):

“Right now I consider myself solid to Purdue,” said Gregory. “I’m a solid verbal. I originally committed to them out of high school, but I ended up going the JUCO route. I told myself, though, that I was going to take my time then transfer to Purdue. So I committed to them a few months ago.”

“Ever since this spring we’ve had about 35 schools come around to see me and some other guys,” Gregory explained. “My coach told me they were all impressed with me and liked what they saw. After that, I’ve kind of wanted to see who was really serious about offering me. I still feel like Purdue is the right school for me now, but if someone were to prove that otherwise, then so be it.”

“Texas would definitely be a game-changer for me,” Gregory told Hookem.com. “Just having them call me and letting me know that they were impressed with my film after looking at it makes me think a lot about them. They are a great program, so they are someone I am seriously considering, especially if they offered.”

“Arkansas offered me last week. I also have offers from Illinois, Louisville, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa State, Oregon State, Utah and obviously Purdue,” he said. “I feel like one reason I haven’t received a ton of offers is because of my commitment status with Purdue. My coach said if I decommitted, I’d have a ton of schools offering me and I believe that due to so many stopping by and showing interest.”

“I won’t be making a decision right now,” Gregory said. “I think the latest it will be is mid-season. I really want to get all my official visits in, because during high school I only took one and I regret that. I really want to be able to see all of my top schools and check them out. So after that happens, I’ll make my decision by the mid-season.”

More encouraging quotes from WR Devon Allen (24/7):

“I think it’s good they’re going after some of these Arizona guys,” he said. “I met Connor Brewer a couple of years ago. They did some workouts and asked for an extra receiver, so I went out there and caught some passes. As for Cole Luke, I’ve talked to him a couple of times. We went to the junior days at Arizona State together, so that’s where we met. They’re not my friends or anything like that, but I have met them. Both seem like good guys and, if somehow we all ended up at Texas, it would be cool to play with them.”

“My dad loves the big school atmosphere and loves the city of Austin,” said Allen. “He said he likes Texas, actually. He also feels like the track program at Texas would be really good for me too, on top of the football program obviously. He really likes the academics that Texas has to offer too.”

“He likes them now, but a few years ago he would probably be cussing at them since they beat Ohio State! Of course that’s just fans being fans though. In all seriousness, he has a good mindset with Texas. He does like them and says he wouldn’t mind coming to Austin every weekend to see me play,” Allen said.

“A couple of days ago I narrowed it down to fifteen schools I like,” he told Hookem.com. “I know that’s a lot, but it’s still early and I’m really interested in what those schools have to offer. I want to see more and learn more about them before narrowing it down further. My top fifteen are, in no specific order, Arizona State, Oregon, Texas, Arkansas, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, California, Washington, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, LSU, USC, Stanford and UCLA.”

“First up we’re going to see Stanford and then California on the weekend of July 23rd,” Allen explained. “After that, the following weekend, we’re going to Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame. I’m looking forward to seeing what they all have to offer. It should be a lot of fun.”

Two quick quotes from 2014 DE/LB Hoza Scott (24/7):

“When I visited (Texas in June) all of the coaches took time out from what they were doing to come up to me and shake my hand,” Scott said. “That really meant a lot to me. They really made me feel at home.”

“I've been to A&M quite a few times, and it feels like home every time I go there,” Scott said. “It just feels more like home because I've been there so much. That's why I give them a slight lead.”

Quotes from 2014 LB Cameron Hampton (24/7):

“Texas is in my top two,” Hampton told Hookem.com. “LSU is the other one. Neither school is ahead of the other though. That’s in no type of order. Both are even and are my two favorites right now.”

“They actually didn’t tell me when I was down there,” he explained. “They called my coach the following day and talked about me with him. They said they really liked what I could do and thought I was a good kid. After that, they told coach that I have been approved for an offer. So hopefully when they do extend the offers, I’ll be getting one. Coach (Bruce) Chambers was already talking about being in line for one, but I was surprised when they actually said it.”

“Texas is my home state,” Hampton said. “That’s a chance to represent your home state and do big things. They have a great school and a great football program. It’s made me very happy to know that they think that much of me. It’s been a really big deal for me.”

"They told me to come down anytime I want to for a game,” said Hampton. “I plan to be there a lot. I’m ready to see them play.”

Update on CB Antwuan Davis after his trip to Atlanta for the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge:

"My first day, the 1-on-1s weren't all that great. I couldn't get as many reps as I wanted. The first day was kind of shaky, I don't know why. That night, I sat in my hotel room and thought about what I had to do next day," Davis said. "I had to come out in 7-on-7, perform a lot better. I was pleased with my performance on Sunday but not so much on Saturday."

"I think I showed them that playing against the best, you have your good days and your bad days but you have to be able to shake off your bad days, go back with the right mentality. I've never had to prove that before. Most of my performances are pretty good," Davis said. "I slipped up a little on that first day, but you have to act like it never happened and I had to get that corrected. I felt like I brought that."

"I was doing a lot of disguising coverages and stuff. My coach is looking for me to do that in the season, so I worked on that tremendously. It worked like a charm. Every time I came up (to press), they'd switch to a deep pass and then I'd back off right before they snapped it. It would get them every time."

"I spoke with him (Duane Akina) about three days after the camp. He asked how I was doing. He said somehow, some way, his assistant pulled up my 1-on-1s in Atlanta. I was like, 'Oh gosh, you should have pulled up anything but those,'" Davis said. "But he said all those plays were great plays. He said 'What you need help on, what I can fix, is technique.' He told me about one of the plays, if I'd taken one less step and then broke on the ball, it would have been an easy pick. He said with most plays, it was simple things, like getting my hands on the receiver and him not going anywhere."

"It was fun. I really enjoyed it. Not many people get to go to that. It was neat meeting new people," Davis said. "Most of them, I felt like I already knew, but I was just getting to know them."

"I really enjoy the coaches at Texas. Coach Akina, we had always kept in contact. There weren't many times had I not called him. I usually call him about two times a week. We Talk about everything - school, track, things like that."

"I'm glad that I made that choice. It's just a relief. For the longest time I had to hang around, call all these coaches. It had gotten so crazy, I had gotten an Expo marker, and on my mirror every night, I had a daily calendar of coaches I had to call every day. I knew Arkansas was Thursday at 9:30. I called LSU every other Monday or something like that. I was trying to keep in contact as much as possible. With coach Akina, his wasn't even on there. I'd just call him whenever. I just knew."

One of the many reasons recruiting is so much fun because things can do a complete 180 in a matter of months. Sims obviously has some things to work out because he's now a felon after commiting fraud with Tshimanga's bank account, but Williams and Green should still have a great opportunity to make an impact at A&M and TCU respectively.

Update on RB Kyle Hicks and his foot injury (OrangeBloods):

"So far, I've been on crutches and just staying off my foot. I go to the doctor (on Monday) tomorrow to see how much longer until I can start my rehab. There's a slight chance I'll be able to start walking on it again tomorrow (July 3rd)," Hicks said.

"I'm so ready. I think about getting back (to full strength) every day. I just can't wait," Hicks said. "I'm ready to get back to working out, going out and running. I miss running, actually. You never know how much you miss running until you can't do it."

"The type of person I am, it can't keep me down. Even though I do have the screws, I still go to the morning workouts, lift weights. I want to show my team I'm still committed, that I'll still do it all with them. I'm sure my legs have probably gotten weaker, but I've been doing upper body stuff. Any workout I can pressure off my foot, that's what I do."

"The (Texas) camp was really fun. I'm glad I ended up going," Hicks said. "It gave me a chance to bond with my future teammates, talk to coaches and see them again. It was nice going there."

"I talked to coach (Bruce) Chambers, coach (Major) Applewhite, coach (Mack) Brown. They all came up to me and were asking me how my foot was doing, told me to get well soon. Coach Applewhite just said to do whatever you have to do to be healthy by the start of the season."

"I'm still happy with the decision I made. I made my decision because I know where I wanted to go," Hicks said. "I'm still happy with my choice."

Quotes from 2014 S Jamal Adams of Carrollton Hebron (24/7). He's another offer in February:

“I really like Texas,” Adams told Hookem.com over the weekend. “I also like TCU and Alabama, but I like them (other schools) all too. We’ll see how it all goes, but Texas is standing above all right now. They’re my unofficial, official number one. They’re sitting good with me and I think I am with them too.”

“The Texas camp really opened my eyes,” said Adams. “It was really great down there in Austin. I went down there to impress the coaches and I think I did just that. They also impressed me a lot. It was a really good visit.”

"Coach Akina is just a great coach,” Adams told Hookem.com. “In fact, he’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever met. He might be the best defensive backs coach there is. He shows so much love to you and just takes the time out to show you how he wants it done, which is the right way, always. Coach Akina is just a real cool guy. He expects everything to be done right though and that’s how I like it.”

“The coaches really liked me and they feel like I’m a really good lockdown corner,” he explained. “They also know I can play safety just as good too. Personally, I have no preference. I’ll play corner and love it, but I’ll play safety and love it. I just like to play. With being a safety, I get to come down, hit and just knock some people around. With corner, I can lock my man down real well, but at the same time I can hit hard too. It doesn’t matter to me as long as I’m on the field doing my thing.”

“Texas has the best athletic facilities I’ve ever seen,” Adams said. “When we were down there and they were touring us around, I was blown away. It was real nice. I’m saying like everything, every part of that campus that I saw is real nice. The bubble practice facility, the weight rooms, locker rooms, field house, stadium, it’s all top of the line. I had a blast not only being there, but getting to see it all as well. That made Texas look really, really good too.”

“Well, now we wait and then they get back to me on junior day next February. They’ve talked to me about offering and all that, but I have to wait like everyone else, which is cool. I’m sure I will come down for a game or two this fall, but I don’t know yet,” Adams said.

“I want to wait and see what all happens,” explained Adams. “Right now I just want to enjoy the recruiting process. I don’t want to rush in to an offer before my junior season begins like some people do. I’ll just kick back and wait to see what happens. It’s a real blessing to even get this experience, so I might as well enjoy right now.”

Update on 2014 OL Kealvin Davis of Garland Lakeview Centennial (24/7):

“It’s definitely Texas,” Davis told Hookem.com when asked of his favorite schools. “They’re the school for me. They’re my favorite and my number one. I’ve grown up a fan of Texas and I’ll always be a fan of Texas.”

“I’ve grown up a big Texas fan,” Davis explained. “A very big fan. I’ve liked them forever it seems like. They’re my dream school and I would obviously love to play for them. It would be a dream come true for me. Not many people get a chance to play for their favorite team, so to get that honor would be a blessing for me.”

“I just had a blast down there,” said Davis. “It was a lot of fun and I had a great time. I enjoyed getting to see everything, meeting the coaches and just taking it all in. It was a real good time. There was no doubt to begin with, but that trip definitely made me like Texas even more.”

"A big part of going down to Austin for me was meeting the coaches,” Davis said. “I got to meet Coach (Stacy) Searels, Coach (Darrell) Wyatt, Coach (Mack) Brown and some of the other ones. They were all very nice guys and I enjoyed talking to them. They gave me a lot of pointers to help improve my game. They gave me a lot of good information really.”

"The thing about Coach Searels is I just really hit it off with him,” he said. “I like his coaching and the way he goes about things. He’s on my level with everything. He really breaks it down for you and helps you understand the game even better. I really mesh with his style of doing everything. I can definitely see myself playing for him for sure. He’s the type of coach that you want to play for.”

“They told me they definitely were going to watch me and keep me in mind,” said Davis. “They liked what I could do and what I brought to the table. The coaches told me I definitely have a really good chance of being a Texas Longhorn when it’s over.”

I just did a little research on my last question and the other guy was Leon McQuay III but this is what I just found out:

dated June 4th 2012

"According to his father, Leon McQuay III has named a top 3 of Vanderbilt, Michigan and USC.

This is McQuay's second cut after previously narrowing things down to a top ten. He's not very big on interviews so I may not be able to catch up with him today for his thoughts but I hope to catch him by tomorrow with more.

He would like to make his decision on Nov. 21.

McQuay is the No. 5 rated safety in the country and the No. 38 rated prospect overall."

And right after that, a user on the one Gator forum I visited asked, "Who do the Gators expect to pickup at safety now, Marcel Harris?"

Quotes from 2014 WR Cameron Sims of Monroe, LA (24/7):

“LSU, Alabama, Texas, Georgia and Baylor are still my top five,” Sims told Hookem.com. “That’s in order too. The first three stand out to me the most though. They are the ones I’m looking at the hardest and the ones I’m really considering at this point. All five are great schools though.”

“It’s been a good summer for me,” said Sims. “I visited LSU and went to their camp, I went to Texas’ camp, Alabama’s too and Southern University as well. It was good getting to see all those different places and compare them to each other. All of them were a lot of fun and I enjoyed competing against the other players.”

“All three of the big camps I went to were all different, but in their own good way,” he explained. “Alabama was a lot faster paced than the other two and they worked you hard all the time it seemed like. Texas was very laid back, but you still worked out to prove yourself. You just got a real chill feeling from it. LSU was like a mixture of the both. Like I said, all three were different, but really good.”

“I like how Texas uses a lot of different formations with their offense,” Sims said. “Plus they’re also up-tempo and like to get their receivers involved in all aspects of the game. They get them the ball a lot, they have them run it, block or even throw passes occasionally. It’s a fun offense and one I could really see myself playing in.”

“The coaches told me they are going to keep a close eye on me,” Sims explained. “They said that if I kept up the hard work and kept producing, then I would definitely have an offer after the season. They want me back down for their junior day, so maybe it will come then.”

“One of the things I want to do this is get back down to Texas for a game,” Sims said. “I want to take an unofficial visit there because I really enjoyed the campus and coaches when I attended the camp in June. So I’m definitely going to get back down there to check them out again.”

Once again, thank you for all the great information Floss! It's sure great to have you back!

I can't remember, but has Tony Brown been to any of Texas' camps this summer? He seems to be great at all these events, but when I look at his highlight tape from his sophomore season, I'm not that impressed. To be honest. I know he's just a sophomore, but to me, Darrion Johnson from Brenham has alot better tape.

I guess that he is a tremendous cover guy, which you wouldn't see on a highlight tape, but he shows it at all these Underclassmen events were the quarterbacks has to test him instead of throwing the other way.
Am I totally off here or?

Brown did attend the June 10th camp and Akina loved him. I do agree that his sophomore tape doesn't get you out of your seat but people are gushing over this guy and he picked up Auburn and Ohio State offers very recently. I've read where some are calling him a "6" meaning he can handle all six positions in the secondary because of his size and cover ability (both CB spots, both S spots, Dime and Nickel). He's making a case for the #1 overall DB in Texas and I expect him to be way up there in the national rankings next spring. It's only helping his stock that much more that he's attending many of these big camps.

I like Johnson a lot as well but UT isn't after him right now. His older brother frequents several of the Texas boards and says he has some maturity and grade issues he's trying to overcome. The staff may pick up their efforts there depending on what his junior year looks like off of the field.

I don't know if things will progress but Texas has expressed interest in 2014 DE Denzel Ware out of Florida (OrangeBloods):

"Texas called recently. They talked to my coach," Ware told Orangebloods.com. "My coach called me and told me they liked me a lot."

"I'm very interested in Texas. They'd probably be in my top five, top three," Ware said. "But I haven't really decided on a list yet. I'm just waiting to see what happens."
"I've been a FSU fan, followed that program since I was little. It's great to have a school like that recruit me," Ware said.

"I'm not doing anything else. I'm just focusing on Crestview football right now," Ware said. "We have team workouts and we'll have a camp that we'll do a week before school."

"My coach sent out my highlight tape to a bunch of schools. I guess he sent it to Texas and they liked me," Ware said. "I'm a pass rusher. That's what I do best. I'm still working on taking on blocks head on, taking on run blocks and working on my hands to get off cut blocks."

"Really, playing time will come. If I'm good enough, I'm going to play. That's how I see it so that's not a big deal. What I'm looking for is academics and the discipline, just structure of the program," Ware said.

Definitely smart for UT fans to be indifferent towards this recruitment. Based on Prevot's quotes, it sounds like his uncle takes care of planning visits so he doesn't even know what his own schedule is half of the time.

Speaking of the kicking game, it seems like the newcomers have taken over special teams.

From 24/7
One thing that hasn't been talked about much this summer is how the kicking duties will be handled in 2012. As of right now, the solution doesn't include two players who competed for jobs in the spring.

Sophomore punter William Russ is reportedly not pleased with the way things are shaping up on special teams.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, this summer has featured senior transfer Alex King working as the punter, true freshman Nick Jordan working kickoffs, and walk-on freshman Nick Rose as the favorite heading into camp to be the placekicker.

That obviously leaves out walk-on placekicker Ben Pruitt and sophomore punter William Russ. Our source said the latter isn't too happy.

“Russ isn't very pleased with the way things are going right now,” the source said.

The kicking game was a major question mark at the end of spring. And it looks like if everything holds to form Texas will have fresh faces who weren't on campus in the spring with some big responsibilities this fall.

Sophomore punter William Russ is reportedly not pleased with the way things are shaping up on special teams.

Getting King as a grad student transfer from Duke was the worst thing for Russ' chances at punter. He's been an attrition candidate since Texas nabbed both Nicks (Jordan and Rose). I think it's simply a matter of him not being as good as the others. Pruitt was not impressive the two times I saw him live in the spring.

Its not that hard to figure out when a place kicker is better than the other or when a punter is better than another.

Instead of Russ not being pleased, he should start working his butt off and get better. If not, wait another year and win the job.

Everytime I see him practice before the games or during the half, he is doing it in such an apathetic manner, like he doesn't want to be there. I really do not think that he is putting as much effort into his job. I'm at the stadium two hours before every game and I always look at the kickers and punters, this kid just seems lazy.

S Vonn Bell has officially narrowed his list down to seven schools as of last week. He told Tennessee's Rivals site that it's Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt. I think he feels pretty strongly about Ohio State as he's already made two trips to Columbus and it was the only place he visited this summer. No talk yet if Texas will get an official.

"I would like take all five (official visits) and everything but we're just going to see what happens. (I) really can't say right now, it just depends on if I narrow that list down in time," Bell said. "We're going to narrow the list down to two or three. Whenever the time feels right, probably."

"It's about the coaches, the bond, the fit and that feeling. The bond with your fellow teammates that come in with you and how you work out with them. And the ones that are already going to be up there with you. It's really about the people more than anything," Bell offered. "The coaches are going to do their part, that's what they get paid for. But you've really got to watch everything to make sure the coaches job is going in the right direction and everything. Those are the key factors right there that are going to matter."

WR Devon Allen has his unofficial to Ohio State set and it's a big one with his father having played baseball for the Buckeyes:

"Yeah, finally," Allen said. "We're going to make it there on July 27th for Friday Night Lights."

"I'm going to also be visiting Michigan and Notre Dame (after the camp)," he said. "Then we're going to visit my aunt in Chicago."

"I am making these trips so that I can start getting an idea", Allen continued. "These schools are ones I need to see before I can really know, because I have about fifteen schools that I am still very interested in. I want to be able to decide by the end of my senior season."

"I want to go to a school that will allow me to run track and play football," said the track star who recently competed in the US Junior National Track Meet in Indianapolis. "As of now, there is no one saying I can't do both."

"I mostly talk to Coach Urban Meyer when I talk to Ohio State," he continued. "He just keeps telling me how much they need speed at wide receiver and how much they could use a guy with my speed, as well as my grades and everything."

"I am real excited to get to see the 'Shoe," he said. "But I am also pretty excited for the food (laughing). My dad is going to show me around and let me see what Columbus has to offer."

Tunnel Vision Award
Winner: QB Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright (Texas)

This award goes to the quarterback who didn't see the field very well, and in that regard, signal-caller Tyrone Swoopes struggled more than anyone else. When he locked on his first read, he was easy to deflect. When he was forced to reverse his field of vision, things got even worse.

Swoopes is definitely a project and to nobody's surprise he struggled in a pass-only environment. If you've seen his highlights he plays against a bunch of 150lb white boys with nobody to pass to and no competition to play against - so he doesn't go through progressions, he runs the ball.

No question he will redshirt and would not see the field at Texas until 3 years at best, and more likely longer. From what I've heard from guys that have seen him live I look forward to seeing what he becomes by his Jr/Sr year which is all that really matters. Nobody out there has a ceiling any higher than Swoopes if he has the work ethic to back up his potential he will be elite.

Quotes from 2014 RB Donald Catalon (24/7):

“I have two favorites right now,” Catalon told Hookem.com. “They are Texas and LSU. That’s in no order though. Neither school is ahead of each other or anything like that. They’re just the two schools I like the most and the top two I would like to play for.”

“He’s just a very cool person and coach,” said Catalon. “I get along with him very well. He’s very down to earth and easy to talk to on and off the field. I really like his coaching style and the way he breaks it all down for you. He takes time to go out of his way and explain things so that you’ll learn more. That stood out a lot to me about him when I was there in June.”

“Basically he said I was one of the top backs that showed up,” Catalon explained. “He pretty much told me that I would have an offer if I kept it up. They want me back on February 18th for their junior day next year and I plan to be there.”

“They told me to come out to some games,” he said. “I’m hoping to make some. I want to try and make three of them if I can. I’d like to see the offense up close and see how they use all those guys they got on the roster at running back. I know they should be good.”

“I’m doing everything I can to get better,” Catalon said. “I did go to two camps this year. One for Oklahoma and then the one for Texas, but other than that I’ve just been working out. I’m always up at my school lifting and working hard to become a better player. I’m planning on having a big year. A really big one, actually. I just have to keep grinding away though.”

Update on 2014 S Tony Brown after the Rivals Underclassmen Challenge (OrangeBloods):

"I strive on competition. You can't get better unless you're competing against guys at the same level or above yours," Brown said. "If you don't go out there and see who is better than you, how are you going to get better just working by yourself all the time? I've gone up against people who are supposed to be the best and I just try to prove I'm the best every time."

"I came out here this summer to prove I could guard man because they had moved me to safety and recruiters and everyone thought I couldn't play man-to-man. So that's all I've been working on in practice. I came out here and I proved it and I feel like that was the only factor that was holding me back from being the No. 1 DB," Brown said. "I've proved that I'll compete at any camp, I've got top performer at every camp I've gone to and I've competed against the best of the best."

"It was great," Brown said of the experience. "I saw five-star guys and I know what I have to shoot for to become a five-star. That's my goal. I saw the number one corner, the number one DB, so I know what I have to shoot for. I was in the front of every drill, I was leading everything and I got awarded as a top performer. I know if I can get top performer against guys a year older than me I feel like I can be one of the best in my class."

"My freshman year, I really had zero offers. Then my sophomore year, I had one offer from LSU. When that first ranking came out, I wasn't in the top-10. It's just that drive to prove I'm the best every day," Brown said. "When I work out, I think about that - how I felt when I first read that I wasn't the number one guy. I felt like I had worked for it and that I had been cheated. So I come out every day and remember how I felt and I never want to feel that again."

"I think confidence comes from how hard you work. If you know you're working harder than the other guy, then you know he can't beat you. I think it also comes from genetics. My dad and my uncle, my mom's twin brother, they were always corners and when you talk to them, you can tell they were confident guys. My mom is confident. She won a Naismith award in high school for basketball, so I think it's just in my blood to be confident," Brown said.

"I really am wide open. I know you don't want to hear it, but I really am wide open. I can probably give a list after the first couple football games," Brown said.

"I'm born and raised in Texas. Texas is always going to be in the top 10, probably even the top 5 for sure. (DB) Coach (Duane) Akina is a great coach, he's produced great DBs. I have the utmost respect for him and coach (Mack) Brown. They're definitely going to be in the top group."

"It's the love with LSU. That was my first offer. They believed in me at a young age. They'll have to be in my top five just off of trust. They trust me so much."

More from OL Caleb Benenoch (OrangeBloods):

"The latest is basically, Texas and OU will be in my top five schools. That's a given," Benenoch said. "If Stanford offers me, they'll also be in there. It would basically be a tie between those three schools. After that, it's kind of a toss-up."

"My parents really like Northwestern and Purdue. Even if they don't make my top five, I might still take officials there since I can't drive there this summer," Benenoch said. "If i can't make it to OU this summer, they'll be in my top five regardless." (Benenoch hasn't seen the OU campus ... he attended an OU satellite camp.)

"Academics is huge. For my parents, that's their main thing. They're not too worried about the football aspect, for them it's more about academics," Benenoch said. "So that will be a huge factor in deciding. That's what UT has over OU. UT's academics are really. The law school is 12th in the country. It's a top school in the country overall. That's very important to me."

"With a school like Stanford, even though it's far away, my parents feel like if I'm getting an education like that, they'll let me go that far. Same with Northwestern. One of the reasons I opened up my recruitment is because Michigan State is so far away. They said 'we don't mind you going that far away if you're getting that type of education,'" Benenoch said.

"My parents have been Stanford fanatics for as long as I can remember. Just everything that it gives you. If you get an education from Stanford, you're pretty much set if you want to get a job later. My dad talks to me about Harvard law school ... Stanford sets you up for that. And Stanford has great football of late."

"UT for me is above everybody. I've been thinking about it, they're above everybody," Benenoch said. "Stanford I don't have an offer from, so I can't really consider them yet. The Trojans obviously have limited spots and they just got an elite DL commitment with Eddie Vanderdoes. They are also going hard after 5-star Kenny Bigelow at DT.

That may squash any rumors of USC pursuing A’Shawn Robinson hard with such limited scholarships.

Sorry, I can see my comments were unclear. Yes Bigelow is already committed, but there was talk about him considering taking visits elsewhere at some of the camps. USC has been working it hard to keep that from happening and it looks like that won't be the case at this point. The thought was USC might start pursuing Robinson harder if Bigelow got wandering eyes but I think they like where they stand now with Bigelow.

Thanks for the clarification. I figured you misspoke or were implying that his commitment was shaky.

Yeah, should have said going hard to 'retain' him, as opposed to saying going hard after him. There has been a flurry of info that he was looking elsewhere -- and when I heard that my first though was concern about them trying to get a visit from Robinson.

Things have been pretty quiet on Von Bell lately. People seem to think team to beat is Tennessee as long one of his favorites and close to home, and speculation is the Buckeyes are right there as well, as well as Georgia. I certainly hope this kid makes an official as I know he likes Texas, but I would guess we are playing catch-up at this point. He did list Texas in his top 7 and said he hopes to get down to 2-3 pretty soon so he may not take all his officials.

Just talked to a source who helped at the World Championships. He said that Durham Smythe pulled up and he had his mother do everything for him, and that all the players were making fun of him (because all the other players from Texas drove themselves and took care of everything.) He also said that his mom asked someone to take his wallet to him, because he did not want to come get it from her.

Hopefully he gets out of being under mommies wing and grow up so we wont have a problem at UT...

:lol This is the least of our problems.

More from JUCO DE Randy Gregory (OrangeBloods):

"I have about eight offers right now, but other than that there's only a couple of schools that are sending me stuff," Gregory said. "Kansas sent me something and I think during spring my coach said about 35 schools came in and they were all interested. The whole situation with Purdue, I don't know if anyone wants to take a serious step towards me until I de-commit."

"Coach Diaz said I'm real athletic and lanky," Gregory said. "They said they liked what they saw on the spring film and I improved throughout the year as far as my highlights and making plays. They think I'm one of the best pass rushers in the nation as far as the JUCO ranks. The last few years they've pretty much excelled at that and they hope I can come in and do the same thing."

"I feel like Purdue is the right school for me but I kind of want to see…I'm going to wait until the season starts and I might actually open it up and see who really takes me seriously," Gregory said. "Then after that take my official visits and make my decision after that, but I have a pretty strong commitment right now."

"Outside of Purdue I don't really have a top school. It's kind of complicated. I don't really have a top school other than Purdue," he said. "Like I've said schools have offered and if I decide to make that step toward de-committing I can really see who I'm interested in. Right now I'm really trying to focus on my school work so I can make sure I get out in December and putting on this weight so I can get ready for this season."

"I've always wanted to stay close. My parents go to every game and having a chance to play in front of all of my friends would be a big deal for me," Gregory said. "But going to Arizona let me get used to being so away from my family and my friends and playing and not having my parents in the stands every game. It would be a big deal to play close to home, but if I were to go away to a big program that would play on TV every week so my parents and friends can see me."

I'm bored at work so I figured it'd be an appropriate time to do a team/recruiting board breakdown. This may be redundant for those of you who read other sites as well but could be a good recap for the more casual reader.

The 2012 roster (counting the 2012 class) stands at 81 scholarship players currently, so Texas is four men under the 85-man limit. There are 10 seniors on board, three legit NFL early entry candidates and a handful of names that remain attrition possibilities:

Seniors
RB Jeremy Hills
RB/WR DJ Monroe
FB Ryan Roberson
WR Marquise Goodwin
WR DeSean Hales
TE Barrett Matthews
OL Luke Poehlmann
TE DJ Grant
DE Alex Okafor
S Kenny Vaccaro

Early Entry Candidates (NFL)
DE Jackson Jeffcoat
LB Jordan Hicks
CB Carrington Byndom

Attrition Possibilities
FB Chet Moss
WR DeSean Hales (I think he'll finish his career)
TE Greg Daniels
OL Garrett Greenlea
OL Kyle Kriegel
LB Aaron Benson
K Will Russ

**Important Dates to Remember**
August 2nd = Fall practice begins
September 1st = Home opener against Wyoming
October 13th = Texas vs. Oklahoma

-------------------------------------------------------------

The entire month of July and August are deemed "quiet periods" so that in itself is a good reason why recruiting news is lacking during the summer aside from prospects attending several camps. College coaches are not allowed to contact recruits but can communicate through Facebook or accept phone calls from them at any time (this rule is in place year-round). Recruiting momentum can change dramatically once September arrives.

**Important Dates to Remember**
September 1st =
a.) Official visit period begins for class of 2013 (seniors)
b.) Written offers can be extended to class of 2014 (juniors)

WR Devon Allen, Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, AZ) ++
WR Robbie Rhodes, Fort Worth Southwest
WR Ricky Seals-Jones, Sealy ++

TE Trent Gow, Mansfield ++
TE Beau Sandland, Pierce CC (Oroville, CA)

OL Caleb Benenoch, Katy Seven Lakes ++
OL Andrew Billings, Waco High ++

DT Marquel Combs, Piere CC (Oroville, CA)
DT/DE Marcus Hardison, Fort Dodge CC (Fort Dodge, KS)
DT Toby Johnson, Hutchinson CC (Hutchinson, KS)
DT Scott Pagano, Moanalua (Honolulu, HI)

DE Kewan Alfred, Trinity Valley CC (Athens, TX)
DE Dajuan Drennon, Timber Creek (Sicklerville, NJ)
DE Randy Gregory, Arizona Western JC (Yuma, AZ) ++
DE Torrodney Prevot, Alief Taylor

CB Cole Luke, Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) ++

S Vonn Bell, Ridgeland (Rossville, GA) ++
S Marcell Harris, Dr. Phillips (Orlando, FL) ++

ATH Chevoski Collins, Livingston

++ = realistic possibilities as of today

Randy Gregory will be one to watch. I think he's attainable, but Texas will have to push hard. He seems pretty comfortable with Purdue and playing close to home. Even after some coaching changes.

Additionally, Purdue suggested Arizona Western after he didn't qualify. That makes me believe that Purdue has some relationships with the AW staff.

How does everyone feel about this? Is this the greatest case of a lack of institutional control that we've ever seen? I hate to see punishment for anyone that didn't have a thing to do with this scandal, but I can't argue against this being the most appropriate time for the NCAA to make an example of a program.

I remember seeing rumors when this all got started that Sandusky and Penn State were possibly using Second Mile as a way to pay players. I think there's already more than enough issues present to shut this thing down but anything football related would just be the final nail in their coffin.

For so many people to actively cover up what inevitably ended with countless other kids being raped due to them not reporting. How could anybody argue there was ever a bigger case of lack of institutional control. And it wasn't just one or two individuals, but numerous people all the way to the top. Death penalty no question.

Derrick Griffin link -- http://www.i95ballerz.com/story%20-%20houston%20defenders%20defeat%20bmore%20elite.ht m

“I’m re-opening my commitment” to Tex A&M, shared the two sport star. He doesn’t know where he will land – only mentioning he had no shortage of choices – but will play both football and hoops, at least initially. That will continue until “I decide which one I’m better in” he concluded.
