Might have been a little pre-mature with the Griffin news. He's saying that he hasn't opened up his recruitment. Either way, with the grades its unlikely he makes it in. He's in worse shape academically then Golden. Huggins or Davis.

How does everyone feel about this? Is this the greatest case of a lack of institutional control that we've ever seen? I hate to see punishment for anyone that didn't have a thing to do with this scandal, but I can't argue against this being the most appropriate time for the NCAA to make an example of a program.

I remember seeing rumors when this all got started that Sandusky and Penn State were possibly using Second Mile as a way to pay players. I think there's already more than enough issues present to shut this thing down but anything football related would just be the final nail in their coffin.

I'd rather see PSU punished in the criminal and civil courts. I'm talking about school administrators doing real jail time and severe financial penalties. Penn State has an endowment of $1.83 billion that should be squarely in the cross hairs.

I'm not saying Penn State should roll out the football team on September 1st and act like nothing happened. The Joe Paterno statue should be sold for scrap, and his name should be removed from every building on campus. They've already started this process at Brown University (where Paterno played QB).

My chief concern with the NCAA getting involved is that it will take focus away from punishing the reasonable parties. Who cares about football? We're talking about children who had their lives destroyed. Attempt to fix that first.

Strong words to call that lies considering he just confirmed that he is 'looking around'.

From ESPN:

"Texas A&M commitment and ESPN 150 member Derrick Griffin (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/143537/derrick-griffin) (Rosenberg, Texas/Terry) said Tuesday that, contrary to online reports, he has not decommitted from the Aggies, but he is looking around at other schools."

Solid post. I think that's the main concern with the NCAA getting involved because there isn't any solid evidence (yet) that football violations occurred and the problem is bigger than the football program. I don't know what the answer is and won't pretend to know, but I hope the punishments hit that community hard. There seem to be a good amount of people in State College that still need a wake-up call.

First priority is criminal charges and that is by a thousand miles.

However, this wasn't isolated to a person or small party, but this was an institution-wide cover up that a huge number of staff and admin was obviously aware of over a 14 year period. I don't see any negatives to additionally giving the school the death penalty. I don't see this detracting from also going after criminal charges - they are independent issues IMO.

The first thing the NCAA should do is allow current players to transfer without having to sit out a year.

Update on RB Kyle Hicks and his foot injury (24/7):

“The doctors have told me that everything is going great,” Hicks said. “I actually go in next Monday to go in for a checkup and that’s when I should be getting out of the boot. I’ve been doing everything the doctor has been telling me to do, so hopefully it’s all good news. If it is, then I’ll start to really get going and begin my rehab process.”

“There’s not a definite timetable I don’t think,” explained Hicks. “But the latest I’ve heard is that I should be 100-percent right before the start of the season. They actually don’t know any specifics on it. That’s why they gave me three more weeks. They wanted to make sure and I’m not really doing anything anyway, so they asked me to stay off of it a little bit longer. I feel pretty good right now though, so who knows.”

"I’m doing everything I can, in my limitation, to be ready for football season,” Hicks told Hookem.com. “I’m doing every single workout that’s possible. Any and every one that I can do that requires me not to put pressure on my foot, I do. I’m doing lower body stuff that they said was OK, like working out my quads and hamstrings. I’m also doing a lot of upper body type stuff as well, such as power cleans. Really, like I said, I try to do it all as long as it involves no pressure on my foot. I just want to be ready to go and be able to do my thing.”

“It’s a struggle for me,” said Hicks. “It’s really tough not playing 7-on-7 and just having to sit on the sidelines. I go to my team’s games to watch them play and support them, but I want to be out there. I want to be helping them, not just cheering them on. So it’s really tough for me to go through this, but I just have to stay positive. I try to keep my spirits up, remain a leader off the field and just encourage my team. There’s really not much else I can do.”

“It’s better to play it safe and not rush anything,” he said. “I don’t want to sit here and watch my team play, but at the same time, I don’t want to make the same mistake twice, you know? I don’t want to be right back where I’m at. It’s just one of those things that you hate, but you have to go through. I want to be completely ready and injury free, so I have to put in my time and that’s what I’m doing, just playing it safe.”

“I talk to the Texas coaches almost every week,” Hicks explained. “I let them know how I’m feeling, how I’m doing and that type of stuff. I try to keep them as updated as possible about it all. They tell me to do whatever it takes to be 100-percent and not to rush anything, just like everyone else says. They want me to just get well and have an injury free senior season.”

“My goal now is to go out with a state championship,” he told Hookem.com. “That’s what everyone wants and says, but it’s the truth. I want to lead my team to the state championship and take it home. I don’t care about my personal stats or goals, because it doesn’t matter. I just want to be a leader and a state champion. That’s all I care about.”

the only reasonable argument is it hurts current players that had no knowledge of the incident.

that logic, although sound, is a slippery slope. using that same logic, the NCAA should never penalize any team because the actions always come from a few yet the penalty always hurts a much larger group. so do we just go laissez-faire?

in this case you let the players transfer without penalty regardless if you give death penalty, sanctions, or no punishment whatsoever. I think that we would all agree on.

It hurts the entire athletic department directly. It hurts the community and businesses indirectly. It hurts the rest of the conference that sells tickets when Penn St comes to town.

If there was some kind of on field advantage that Penn St gained from this, then maybe they deserve some type of punishment handed down from the NCAA.

But this is something that had nothing to do with football itself other than it being a football coach. Let the justice system handle this entire issue in criminal and civil courts, imo.

The B1G is self righteous enough I could see them kicking Penn State out of the conference for this. It would be real tough and have lots of legal issues but the fact is Penn State is a real black eye for lots of institutions with this.

You know this is going to affect even the alumni.

should a father that commits a felony not be incarcerated because his innocent child would also be a victim of the punishment? your argument would eliminate having laws and rules b/c this applies to almost any person in prison. they have family/friends/etc that suffer. if curley gets jail time should we release him because his innocent family will be victims.

on field advantage not gained? they covered up children being raped. yes hiding child sodomy gave them an advantage because had they come clean it would have been devastating to the program.

this 100% had to do with football. protecting the image of the football program was deemed more important than protecting dozens of kids that were raped. the whole point of the freeh report was those at penn state at all levels wanted to protect the image of the football program at all costs. i'd suggest reading the freeh report or a summary of it b/c that is the highlighted central point.

you were the one that said you don't see one negative to giving them the death penalty. I was simply pointing them out.

That said, when a felony is committed, you have to punish the felon to keep him from committing the felony again.

When a school commits recruiting violations, you have to punish the school to keep them from committing future violations.

What exactly does a football punishment have to do with rape?

The Art of the Decommit
By Bryan Curtis on July 19, 2012 12:45 PM ET

Erich Schlegel/Getty ImagesSorry, you’ll have to give me a second here. We Texas Longhorns fans suffered a loss the other day. Not a death or anything. We had a decommit.

Ricky Seals-Jones, a wide receiver from Sealy, Texas, was being recruited by the Longhorns. In February, he said he wanted to be one of us — that is, he committed. In June, he changed his mind. A decommit is a stranger ritual than Mark Appel refusing to sign with the Pirates, or Jeremy Lin taking the offer sheet from Houston. A decommit isn’t about money. It’s not about a salary-cap gimmick. It’s a public unfriending.

Through reading message boards — which is what I’m doing when the Grantland editors can’t find me — I think I’ve discovered the four types of decommits:

The Better-Offer Decommit: The most common by far. A recruit pledges to a so-so program — in academic terms, his safety school. When a bigger fish comes along, the recruit trades up. Remember the name Tavares Garner; we’ll return to him in a second.

The “I Moved” Decommit: A personal favorite, seen lately with linebacker Reuben Foster. When he lived in Georgia, Foster was an Alabama commit. When he moved to attend Auburn High, he switched to — well, guess. The time-honored cliché “I want to stay close to home” may still hold, but it means something totally different.

The Morals-Clause Decommit: Alex Anzalone of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, was an Ohio State commit. Then he met a registered sex offender who was lurking around the team during his recruiting visit. He told the Buckeyes to get lost. Penn State had a few of these, too.

Finally, there’s Ricky Seals-Jones. That was an “I’m Not Sure” Decommit. “He decommitted so he can go visit some other schools; that’s it,” his father told ESPN. Even though Seals-Jones still lists Texas as his leader, Longhorns fans have had some trouble coping. Seals-Jones said he got death threats on Twitter and that “a couple cars in my neighborhood we didn’t know would drive by [the] house real slow.”

I want Seals-Jones to play for Texas. He’s 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, and he could be as physically imposing as a wide receiver as Michael Dyer was as a running back. But here’s why I don’t hold his decommit against him. We fans tend to see recruiting as a mano-a-mano game between coaches and recruits. Coach makes an offer to recruit; recruit weighs his options; recruit performs a strange ceremony with hats; and so forth.

Actually, it’s coaches who have most of the power in recruiting. Recruits are signing a contract that, in most cases, only offers them a one-year, unpaid job. Once they get into school, their transfer options are restricted. The decommit is one of the few weapons a player has at hand.

On message boards, a poster may admit that a recruit can decommit, but it’s framed as dishonorable. (He never mentions this if the decommitter is in the process of committing to his school.) For this to make any sense, you have to think of recruiting as an honorable process. I’ve never understood how someone on a message board can charge every coach in the country with paying players under the table, or charge players with hiring street agents — and then grade like Miss Manners when it comes to etiquette. Recruiting is inherently ridiculous, and the decommit might be one of its few rational acts.

Tavares Garner, whom you’ll remember from the Better-Offer Decommit, said the other day, “I’m looking forward to decommitting.” I’m happy for Tavares. Really. Then again, he decommitted from Texas Tech.

Thought this was funny :lol

OrangeBloods spoke with 2014 DE/LB Hoza Scott at the State 7-on-7 Tourney recently to get an update with his recruitment. He attended an LSU camp this week and said they made an impression but A&M and Texas remain atop his list (in that order). He mentioned simply needing more time with the Texas staff but he did enjoy his time in the film room with Diaz. Interesting that his mother says she would like him to stay close to home but would prefer he attends school outside of Texas (LSU could be a factor because of this). It doesn't mean much right now, but he says he wants to make his commitment after his junior season ends and potentially before Texas holds their Junior Days. Diaz and Applewhite will be the keys for UT.

Scott likes aggsy because aggsy is the first school to talk to him.

After one season of aggsy in the SEC he will see that Texas is the place he can showcase his talent on a national level in the State of Texas and have the opportunity to win games. Aggsy not so much.

Just because aggsy plays in the SEC does not mean aggsy compete in the SEC.

If we really get the crap beat out of us this year and next then I think we lose him. If we at least do decent I think we'll land Scott.

Hoza Scott showed up to the Texas state 7-on-7 championships wearing a Texas A&M snapback hat on Friday. He wanted to make it clear which school was in the lead for his pledge.

“I went and bought this two days ago,” Scott said. “My mom wanted me to go buy it and show that A&M is No. 1. So that’s what I did.”

Also, I've heard his grandpa loves A&M and hates Texas, but who knows the validity of that.

Two quick quotes from 2014 DE/LB Hoza Scott (24/7):

“Right now Texas A&M is actually my favorite,” Scott told Hookem.com. “But after visiting Texas, it’s getting very close. They are neck and neck to be honest with you. Texas is right after A&M.”

“I just have to keep getting to know the coaches better,” said Scott. “We really hit it off and I like them all. I was very impressed by my visit to Texas. The more I get to know them, the better their chances are. Like I said though, it’s very close.”

Kind of a crazy update on RB Dontre Wilson from 24/7. He's apparently soured on Texas since committing to Oregon, but....

“There’s a lot going on up there (in Oregon) right now that he doesn’t like,” said the source. “Depending on what happens at Oregon, Dontre might not end up there. There’s a good chance it won’t happen.”

“He won’t be going to Texas,” the source said. “I can guarantee you that. He will not end up there.”

We will see the impact in 2014, that is looking like a pretty tough year for Texas recruiting wise. LSU and Bama have really turned on the jets in an effort to have an impact in the state of Texas for 2014.

If Texas is going to maintain it's grip on recruiting we are going to have to win this year like we did back in 2008 and 2009.

We know aggsy won't win dick, but the exposure the SEC is getting in Texas is going to take it's toll if Texas continues to struggle.

I think Texas will get Tony Brown. It won't be easy, but he has the staff's full attention early in the process.

Texas will be right there for Harvey once they offer.

I don't think anyone knows what's going with Darrion Johnson. His brother, Orangebloods and Hook Em 247 poster BrenhamHorn, seems like a good person. I hope he can help his brother receive a college education. Wherever that might be.

Ed Paris will be a tough get. LSU is the clear leader there. Katrina evacuees will continue to pop up on the recruiting radar. Texas must do better with the former Louisiana kids.

Lots of back-and-forth on Twitter between 2014 RB/FB Daniel Gresham and 2014 OL Demetrius Knox about Texas. Here are some quotes from them via 24/7:

“Texas will always be high on my list,” Knox told Hookem.com. “If you can succeed at Texas and see a lot of playing time, then it means you can succeed anywhere because they always have the best players. They can prepare me for the next level if that’s where life leads me.”

“I really like Coach (Stacy) Searels a lot,” said Knox. “He’s a great guy and we stay in touch all the time. I also like Coach (Mack) Brown a lot, too. He’s a good coach and even better person off the field. I really like both of their personalities honestly. I have a good relationship with them both. I enjoy getting to talk to them.”

“I talk to them quite often,” he explained. “Whenever I have a question about the university or the program, then sometimes I call a coach up just to talk about that. Sometimes I just call them to talk about football or just whatever really. I call and report to them quite a bit though. I’d say I’m in good standing with them for sure when it comes to keeping the lines of communication open.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I really like Texas a lot,” said Gresham. “They’re a great school for football and for academics. I’ve rooted them on for a while now and they are a place I could see myself going for sure. Texas is always one of the top schools in the nation, so I kind of like that.”

“Coach Applewhite talked to me and said that they want me to do it all,” he told Hookem.com. “They see me as a fullback, tight end, h-back and running back. To me, that’s very, very cool. I really like that idea.”

“Me and Demetrius talk about schools quite a bit,” explained Gresham. “We’re both going through our options. I think in the end we’ll sit down and have a big dinner with our families together and discuss those options. We have aspirations to go to the same college together, so we’re always seeing who’s getting what offer. We both like to keep in the know about each other for sure, which is good since we want to play together.”

Here's another defensive line prospect to keep in mind. Per 24/7, Oscar Giles visited Houston Worthing at the end of May to check on DE Neikemian Gills.

“Coach Giles stopped by right before school was out for the summer,” Gills told Hookem.com. “He told me he liked me and thought I was a good player. He said they would be evaluating me this season, so to keep up the good work because they need good linemen. They actually wanted me to come in for a camp in June, but I couldn’t make it.”

“I like them a lot,” said Gills. “The Longhorns are really my favorite team. I grew up liking them, so I’ve been a fan ever since I was a little kid.”

“I feel like I’m an explosive player,” Gills explained. “I’m fast off the edge, have long arms to get people off me and I’m always hungry. I love getting after the quarterback. I’m really good at it.”

Quotes from OL/DL Jake Raulerson on his future college position (OrangeBloods):

"I don't think I'm fast enough for defensive end. I think I can play it if I need to, but when I get there I can see myself playing offensive line," Raulerson said. "So there's the answer to everyone's question - offensive line."

"People need to stop worrying about my weight. I see it all the time. I'm going to fit somewhere. They can wait and see, but I can gain weight. It's not a problem," Raulerson said.

"The thing is, I'm playing on both sides of the ball (in high school). With a 100-plus plays, it's hard to maintain weight," Raulerson said. "People are so worried about my weight, but people don't need to worry about that. I see it everywhere - can he gain enough weight? Can he do this or that? I can be 290 and play at center."

"I just think I can read plays. You need a smart player at center and I think I can learn things quickly," he said. "A guy who can snap the ball is very crucial. If you can't get the ball to the quarterback, you're not going to have a play at all. You can snap the ball and get blown back 20 yards, but you have to get the ball to him to start the play. I'm not saying I'm ever going to get blown back 20 yards, but I think center is maybe the most important job spot besides quarterback and left tackle. You're the quarterback of the offensive line. You have to know what to do. If you don't, you're in trouble."

"He (Maurkice Pouncey) just said to keep working at it. He said I have a great work ethic, a great desire to be at the top and work hard. He said it's all going to come and that I don't need to worry about my weight, it will be fine," Raulerson said. "He said, 'You're going to naturally gain weight and it's incredible how big guys get from one year to then next.' I'm graduating early. If need be, I might redshirt. I don't know. It's their call but I can see myself redshirting. If I have a half a year and then another full year to gain weight, in two years from now you could see me at 300 pounds."

It's preseason so who cares anyway, the good news is that they do have to play each other and we will find out whats up. “Me, Demetrius and Kendall, our wide receiver, went down to Texas for their camp,” explained Gresham. “We had to leave early, but on the way back, while we were sleeping, our head coach got a phone call and it was Coach (Mack) Brown. He wanted us to come back to his office, but we were already too far out of Austin. So I get home and my head coach texts me telling me to call Coach (Major) Applewhite. He told me that they really liked me and that they wanted to offer me.”

“After that, I’ve talked to both of them quite a bit,” said Gresham. “Coach Wyatt was the first one to talk to me from Texas and told me that they want me as a fullback. Shortly after that, Coach Applewhite talked to me and said that they want me to do it all. They see me as a fullback, tight end, h-back and running back.”

“To me, that’s very, very cool,” Gresham told Hookem.com. “I really like that idea. I like it a lot, really. Honestly, I used to play center but my dream position has always been running back. So to hear that he wants to use me as a running back, as a fullback, as a tight end or wideout or h-back, that really excites me. It pumps me up. Not too bad for a guy that was once a center, you know? I love to hit people and I love to run the ball, so that sounds like a lot of fun to me.”

“Ever since I’ve moved here, all I’ve heard about is Texas,” he said. “I mean, I moved here in 2005 when they beat USC for the national championship. That team was so good and fun to watch. Vince Young, Ramonce Taylor and all of those guys were awesome. There was so much speed and talent. Ever since then they have been a team that I like a lot. They are one of my favorite teams. I root for them.”

“Ramonce (Taylor) says that Texas is a great place,” said Gresham. “He helps out at our school some when he can, so I talk to him a lot when he’s there. He tells me all about it and says I’d really like it.”

"I really like Texas a lot,” said Gresham. “They’re a great school for football and for academics. I’ve rooted them on for a while now and they are a place I could see myself going for sure. Texas is always one of the top schools in the nation, so I kind of like that.”

Also from 24/7, Mack mentioned at Big XII Media Days that the staff has discussed holding a showcase camp in the month of July (starting in 2013) for the top recruits on Texas' radar. It would be much like what Florida does with their Friday Night Lights event or USC with their Rising Stars camp. It's like another Junior Day but in July. Not many specifics were given but it would probably involve recruits bringing their families along and Mack and the coaches would go all out to enterain them for a day or two. I imagine the recruits would also get a chance to have workouts with the coaches. I like the idea a lot versus just having the annual summer camps because it's more of an experience and another opportunity to get the elite kids on campus.

Had a feeling that was going to happen once I heard he left LSU without committing on his last visit. Either way it's great news for the Ags.

Still a long way to go here and he's going to visit multiple schools before he commits. I don't see him pulling the trigger for at least a couple more months but I feel that whenever he commits, it will be a very solid commitment on his part. Don't see him switching his commitment back and forth like some of these kids do.

Quote from 2014 OL Demetrius Knox (24/7). Did not know this but when Knox moved to Texas in the seventh grade, he lived with the family of 2014 RB/FB Daniel Gresham. When two or three kids say they're a "package deal", it's easy to brush it off because it rarely works out. However, Knox and Gresham (and their families) are much closer than we thought.

“It is super early,” Knox said. “But I’ve got it all planned out. The best school that offers me and Daniel Gresham is where I’m going. He’s my brother. (Gresham) got approved for a Texas offer in February with me, so right now, they are number one.”

Penn State kicker Fera interested in Texas

By William Wilkerson | Jul 26, 2012 1:52 PM
Penn State senior kicker Anthony Fera has contacted the Longhorns about joining their program, according to a source close to the situation.

A season ago, Fera, a Cypress (Texas) St. Pius X product, became the first Nittany Lion since Chirs Bahr in 1975 to be the starter for field goals, kickoffs and punts.

A candidate for the Ray Guy Award, Fera was selected as the 2011 first-team All-Big Ten punter by ESPN.com and second-team all-conference by the media and coaches. He was also a semifinalist for the 2011 Lou Groza Award.

He connected on 14 of 17 field goal attempts last season (82.4 percent conversion rate) and was 11-of-11 on attempts inside 40 yards. Fera averaged 42 yards on 64 punts with 18 kicks landing inside the 20, and had 12 punts that exceeded 50 yards.

For Texas, which is still searching for a replacement for the departed Justin Tucker, Fera could be the ideal answer.

The Longhorns completed spring practice without concrete answers to whom they would have manning each of their kicking duties.

Will Russ, a heralded sophomore from Shreveport, La., redshirted in 2010 and played in only one game in 2011. Nick Jordan, a high school All-American from Coppell, Texas, could be the answer, but hasn’t gotten a chance to prove it yet. Nick Rose could factor into the conversation, but he is a freshman as well.

The only kicker on the roster with experience is senior Alex King, who transferred from Duke. But he would likely just punt if given the opportunity.

So maybe there is room for a former Under Armour All-American to come back to his home state and contribute right away. Texas has at least one scholarship available with Paden Kelley's decision to quit in June.

Also, part of the NCAAs ruling in connection with the heavy sanctions placed on Penn State says that if a player transfers for the upcoming fall semester to a school that has already reached its scholarship limits for this season, the school can exceed those numbers for 2012-13 as long as it reduces its limits proportionately for next year.

Burton stated today that Fera will either stay at PSU or transfer to Texas. It could go either way.

Fera is key in my opinion. Texas wouldn't pursue Fera if they felt comfortable with Jordan or Rose. The reports that Rose has passed Jordan in the place kicker pecking is very concerning. I would like to see Rose and Jordan redshirt this season and Fera and King handle all of the kicking / punting duties.

If you don't think the kicking game is important, go talk to Nick Saban. He offered a 2013 long snapper a full scholarship.

" I would like to see Rose and Jordan redshirt this season and Fera and King handle all of the kicking / punting duties".

I am not an advocate for shirting kickers...no reason to extend roster spot. 2013 recruiting a good example of how tight numbers can get.

If Fera comes aboard and wins job--- let attrition take its course among kickers but no RS!

Harris has had ample opportunities to commit to Florida, and he hasn't pulled the trigger yet. He just walked out of the hot box of Florida Friday Night Lights without committing. I'm cautiously optimistic.

247 continues to say Ash's injury isn't severe. They also made a good point in that the first couple practices are without pads and therefore not really important. Ash has a little more than a week to rest and then the non-pads practices to miss if necessary. Of course if the injury is worse than imagined, it could bother him the whole season and we'll be seeing Case.

Update on K Anthony Fera from 24/7...he was on campus yesterday with his family and he does have an official offer in place. Considering he's only a semester away from graduating at Penn State, academics were thought to be an obstacle. For whatever reason, that's no longer the case. Latest with OL Caleb Benenoch from 24/7:

“Texas is my leader,” Benenoch said. “I like the school, and I'm really looking for the school with a the best combination of football and academics, and Texas is the school I feel the best about.”

“If everything goes through with admissions (at Stanford) then there's a pretty good chance I'll get an offer,” Benenoch said. “It's all up to the admissions people, though.”

“I got to see the football facilities, and even though I've visited other schools I haven't seen anything anywhere close to what Texas has,” Benenoch said. “Texas has the best facilities. There's nobody that can really compare with them.”

“I'd say about a 9.5 (at Texas),” Benenoch said. “I don't quite want to go to a 10 just yet. Just know that I really like Texas – a lot. I'm just trying to take things slow and go through the process.”
“That's the only reason why I'm taking things slow,” Benenoch said. “I don't want to just get caught up in something and commit somewhere because of the hype. I committed to Michigan State because of the hype that was created by them having had been successful recently and having a good coaching staff. I know coaches can tell you they'll be there three or four more years, but you can't believe that. I learned that you have to commit somewhere that you'd be happy even if all of those coaches left and football wasn't a part of it. I'm just taking my time and trying to make the best, most informed decision I possibly can.”

Some quotes on S Marcell Harris from a source of 24/7:

"It's Florida and Texas tied at number one," explained a source. "They're practically even. That could and will probably change one way or another after he visits Austin. Florida State is a distant third for sure and then I don't think there's anyone behind that. I know the Gators don't feel like this is a lock for them, so that right there tells you that Texas is right up in the mix, tied at the number one spot."

"He's very anxious to get back to Texas," said a source. "When he visited originally, he was really blown away. He thought a lot of the school, the facilities and especially the coaches. People seriously don't realize how much of a player Texas is in this thing because of those reasons. I know a lot of Florida fans think he's a guaranteed lock to the Gators, but that's not necessarily true at all. He likes Texas, a lot, and tells those close to him that."

Quotes from 2014 CB/S Tony Brown (24/7):

“The Texas coaches told me that I have been approved for an offer,” Brown told Hookem.com. “I should receive one when they have their junior day. I took that as a big compliment. I love Coach Mack Brown. He’s real cool, so when he said I was approved for an offer, I was really happy about that. Everyone always wants a Texas offer and when you get it, it feels like you made it.”

“Texas and USC were two of the schools I watched growing up,” explained Brown. “USC has actually offered me, which was real big. I also started watching Oregon a lot around my 8th grade year, when they became big. Since then, if I can’t catch the games, I’ve always watched the highlights of those teams.”

“Probably the hardest camp was Alabama,” he said. “That one stood out, because I went there all three days. Most guys only go to a camp for one day and it’s for a reason. It’s very rigorous and there was a lot of hard work.”

“Coach Saban is a real cool guy,” Brown said. “He told me he thought I could play anywhere, at any position in the secondary. I took that as a big compliment. He also told me I was the perfect fit for his system and that if I was in it and worked hard, I could be one of the first drafted when I come out.”

“I’ve been trying to get in contact with Oregon. Also some of the Florida schools like Miami, FSU and Florida. I’ve also talked to Michigan some and an offer should be coming soon,” said Brown.

A potential big factor in 2014 CB/S Tony Brown's decision could be where his sister, a big track star, signs her LOI (24/7):

“Her going somewhere has a big impact on me,” Brown said. “Wherever she goes, that school will probably at least be in my top five.”

“I mean, that would be one of the best positions for me to be in, being in the same school with my sister,” explained Brown. “With family, it’s always better. I’ve had college athletes tell me that it’s harder than you think, not knowing anybody and having to get acclimated with people. But if I had her there, it would make it much easier.”

“I feel like my sister has narrowed it down to some of the same schools I’m looking at,” Brown said. “She’s been looking at Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama and others. We’re probably going to go on some unofficial visits after Gridiron Kings and before the season starts.”

“Texas actually just offered her the other day” Brown told Hookem.com. “They called my mom and her and that’s when they offered. She’ll be taking a visit to there as well.”

I'd guess for Fera the main issue is he is close to getting his degree from PSU, where he may have to take ~30 hours extra to get degree from UT to hit that minimum 60 hours for UT degree. He's in a tough spot.

Update on 2014 CB/S Edward Paris and 2014 S Brandon Simmons...they have both been approved for an offer by the staff and said it is their intent to return to UT in February for Junior Days (even though that's likely just talk for the time being). They had a chance to spend time in the film room with Akina and also sit in Mack's office. They came away impressed with everything despite some people around them doing negative recruiting against Texas in the past. It was a small victory for the staff just to get them on campus but I'd still classify them as longshots.

Quotes from the father of 2014 S Brandon Simmons after yesterday's visit to Texas (OrangeBloods):

"They sat down with coach (Mack) Brown for about an hour. He approved both of them for offers," said Simmons' father, Kashaan Simmons, who accompanied the players on the visit. "We'll probably come back down here in February. They want us to come to a few games. We'll probably go to the Red River Rivalry (Texas-OU) since it's so close to home, then we'll try to catch a game on campus."

"Obviously, the facilities were one of the highlights. The perception that we had going in, it was a different perception going out. Coach Brown shed a lot of light on how Texas runs things," Mr. Simmons said. "It's good to know. He was very informative. It was definitely an enlightened trip and it changed our perception of what Texas was according to what people would say positively or negatively. I'm glad we did our due diligence."

"I knew they offered in February. I knew that going in," Mr. Simmons said. "It was more just the facilities. From what I'd heard, they weren't the best. Come to find out, they're great. Our perception was that the facilities weren't going to be the best of the best. When I went in, I was like 'Wow, they're pretty good.' We weren't aware of the 101,000 at the stadium, didn't know that. We didn't know they're building a new weight room. There was a lot that impressed me."

"They don't have a top, but I definitely think Texas has a good shot," Mr. Simmons said. "From what they saw today, you can't put Texas in the bottom of anything after what we saw today. Texas definitely improved their position after today's visit."

"We talked with coach (Duane) Akina, coach (Bruce) Chambers, coach Brown - We met with all of them," Mr. Simmons said. "We visited with (DE Jackson) Jeffcoat, we talked with their starting safety. We got a chance to talk to a lot of the kids, the training staff. The kids got a chance to take a picture with Earl Campbell which was a plus."

"I think we're in shutdown mode as far as traveling," Mr. Simmons said. "Texas was close and they wanted us to come down so that one worked out."

"Right now, it's time to focus on getting ready for the season, getting the guys' minds right. They've been doing a lot of traveling from coast to coast, been all over the place. They have about two weeks to relax, get their mind right, get situated for a state title run."

Quotes from 2014 CB/S Edward Paris (24/7):

"It was a great experience," Paris said shortly after 7pm. "I had never got to see UT like the way I did today. I didn't see anything negative today, it was a great visit."

"He's (Akina) a real good coach. He loves man coverage, and so do I. He was showing us some film about man coverage, what they do and stuff in man," he said.

"He's a real cool coach (Mack Brown). Real humble. He didn't talk mess about any school. He talked about Texas, how he runs the program, the history of the program and stuff like that. Basically, he said they offer kids on their junior day, and he invited me to their first junior day next year. He said I was approved for offer, but they offer the old fashion way."

"Right now, I have all my options open. I had a great summer. I got to go to Jamaica with my family in June, came home, went to the LSU 7-on-7, went to Alabama after that, went to 7-on-7 nationals and then to UT today. It was a great summer," Paris said.

Quotes from the head coach of OL/DL Andrew Billings (24/7):

“The visit to Texas was actually set up three weeks ago,” explained Waco High head coach Marty Herbst. “His father originally went down with him to the camp in Austin back in June, but his mother was unable to attend it. So after the coaches’ and family’s vacation, the two parties set it up and chose Tuesday as the day to go. The visit was really for his mother and him more than anything. Momma wanted to go look around, see everything and meet the coaches herself, so that’s basically why it happened.”

“They originally told me a decision or commitment would not be made after the trip,” Herbst said. “Regardless of what happened, they would wait. That was exactly the case. No commitment was made, obviously. He and his family are true to their word, so I knew he wouldn’t.”

“They’ve all done a lot of traveling this summer,” Herbst said of Billings and his family. “They’ve seen a lot of places and many different schools. Now that it’s all over and his mom had a chance to see Texas, he’ll narrow his list down by the end of this week. My guess is the very first day or two of August, as that was the original timetable to narrow them down.”

“I know Andrew has really been excited about Texas,” said the Waco High coach. “He was especially excited after going to the camp initially and getting to look around and talk to the coaches there. I would probably venture out to say that the Longhorns are his favorite public school. If he narrowed it down to five, I’m betting that there are a lot of private schools on there because of their academics, but that Texas is the first public school on his list.”

“As far as a time frame, to my knowledge, there’s not one really set on when he’ll commit.” Herbst told Hookem.com. “Andrew hasn’t really decided if he wants to narrow it down and immediately make a decision after or if he wants to let it play out a little longer so he can be completely sure. My guess is that he’s planning to play it out some, but that’s just my guess.”
