Bloeddyr-

Who's reporting that? That would be a huge surprise to me. Watched his film this weekend and he's got a ways to go, imo. He's definitely huge, though.

Update on 2014 S Dylan Sumner-Gardner from Inside Texas...he will be going to Texas' first Junior Day on February 10th after speaking with both Mack and Chambers recently. He's still somewhat standoffish when it comes to UT but he's been told he's a priority and will likely be offered if he shows interest. He's expected to de-commit from Clemson soon and A&M has the inside track.

24/7 reporting that 2014 WR Demare Kitt of Tyrone, GA was recently offered by Texas. Too early to tell if this is legit and a guy that Texas will pursue but nice to hear the staff is throwing out a lot of lines:

Mack's been known to confuse the hell out kids in the past with the official/unofficial offer thing, so interested to see where this goes.

Thanks for the update.

For what it's worth, 24/7 shot down the offer to 2014 OL Jovan Pruitt. They said Notre Dame offered, but Texas did not. Not a shock considering Texas has communication issues a lot of the time.

Applewhite and Porter putting in major work with Wilson. He's supposed to make his final decision on Sunday when he returns from Austin. Texas going back to the spread offense and Wilson being able to help on special teams as soon as he gets to campus have to be big factors here. I can't believe this might actually happen.

Texas' hopes are with Larry Porter and rumor goes that he has a connection with Fournette's family (not sure what it is). It's encouraging that he's so familiar with that area of the country as well. And I don't know if he still has the same position, but DE Shiro Davis' high school coach was the defensive coordinator for Fournette's team this past season. UT is definitely not the favorite but there are some positives to work with.

Fournette grew up in a very tough neighborhood, so honestly I don't think that "proximity to home" (to use a NCAA-game term) is too big for him. I read this great article about him back in June.
http://espn.go.com/colleges/alabama/story/_/id/8090719/2014-running-back-leonard-fournette-overcome-adversity-excel-life

I hope that the family atmosphere in Austin will make an impression on him.

This year it has been very convenient for us for you guys to get as many guys as possible bc we are going after a small selected class while you guys are taking all the players who wouldve been Sooner or whatever else in the Big 12.

Quotes from the high school coach of 2014 ATH Roderick Bernard (OrangeBloods):

"It happened all within about a week," said Sharpstown head coach Dallas Blacklock. "Texas was pretty confident after watching him on tape and talking to me. They felt like he was a guy that could fit their program pretty well. He's a dual-sport kid. He runs track and plays football, so he's really fast. He's built like Marquise Goodwin. Roderick's not an Olympic style kid but he's fast like Marquise. He's a 4.3 kid."

"It was maybe the next week coach that coach Giles gives me a call, said he wants to come by and see me. We talked and he said our wide receivers coach really likes (Bernard)," Blacklock said. "He likes what he can do on film, we might want to offer him."

"He told me how he's similar in Marquise's build - they're both about 5-9 and 175 pounds. I looked it up and they're identical in their body make up. I can see how he can fit at Texas. We had talked, and they wanted to come by and talk to me, look at Roderick's transcripts, see what kind of character he has."

"I was totally okay with that. Roderick is the best kid in the country. He's awesome. If we had 20 more Rodericks, we'd be state champs," coach Blacklock said. "They came by, they said 'tell me about his character.' I did, and they said they want to make him a Longhorn."

"I told them he'll be excited to hear that and they'll probably be hearing from him soon. He called coach Wyatt tonight and made it official. It all wrapped up pretty quickly. When the University of Texas comes knocking, you don't wait."

"Because UT jumped out so fast, nobody really got a chance to see him," Blacklock said. "They kind of said, 'Let's get him now before he hits the market.' Right now, everybody is still trying to tie up loose ends with 2013 but Texas is already done with most of that so they're able to get a head start on 2014."

I really like this guy! He reminds me of James Clark of Smyrna Beach this year. He might not be the guy who is going to run routes like Shipley or anything like that, but sent him deep and get him the ball the way that WVU has been giving Tavon Austin the ball. He seems electrifying!

as good as he is, we don't any more 5-star guys if we can't develop them. Some of the best DTs we have had at Texas were lower ranked guys that spun down to DT from other positions. Don't get me wrong, I would love to still get Robinson, but lets be real, why would do we care about high ranked recruits when we keep getting our asses kicked by teams with low ranked recruits.

It's time for Mack to take lower ranked kids and start developing them instead of just relying on the talent of these kids. If he can't do it then he needs to get the hell out.

Considering Major is our best recruiter, I'd say if he did then we probably started out with no chance.

Mack's ship is sinking you can believe he won't be around for much longer.

Update on what went wrong with DT A'Shawn Robinson (24/7). Texas is thought to have zero chance of getting his signature on Wednesday:

“Alabama did a great job of getting in his head and laying it all out for him,” said a source at Arlington Heights. “They worked on him for a long time and worked on him hard, especially after they got him on a visit. They explained to him how he could come in and play a couple of different spots immediately if he put his mind to it and works hard."

“They sold him on playing for a team that constantly competes.”

“There was also a lot of negative recruiting toward Texas taking place,” said the source. “This was the case with all schools, but especially Alabama. Like I said, they sold him on the ‘team that constantly competes for it all’ idea. They told him to look at what they are doing compared to what Texas is doing. They sold him on the idea of stability there."

“To me, they made it sound like Texas was going nowhere fast.”

“I don’t see it happening,” the source explained. “Around here we are all a little stunned, to be honest. We figured he would stick with Texas. He’s told me for a while that’s where he would end up. I really can’t believe it. I thought he would stay much closer to home.”

Latest with RB Dontre Wilson (24/7). He's expected to choose Ohio State this evening:

“They (Texas) made the decision very tough for him,” the source said. “Texas really went all out and 'Tre had a great time on his visit. He was very receptive to what the coaches were telling him and he really felt like Texas would have been a good fit. The coaches did an outstanding job this weekend."

“In the end it just wasn't meant to be.”

“No,” the source said. “I can assure you of that (Applewhite's affair had no impact). Major Applewhite was the reason Texas even got a visit in the first place.”

WR Montrel Meander is expected to make his final decision this evening as well. Inside Texas reported earlier in the weekend that he would likely stick with Washington State because he believes safety is his ideal position and Texas wants him at WR. However, Mack made a call to Meander's family last night as a follow-up to his official visit in an attempt to seal the deal. 24/7 thinks UT is the favorite to land him.

Bo Davis was in Waco on Saturday evening for a final in-home visit with DT Andrew Billings and his family before the dead period began. According to 24/7, things went well as they always do when UT visits, but it sounds like Texas still trails and Billings' mother wants Baylor. He's still scheduled for a Tuesday afternoon commitment on ESPN radio.

Per 24/7, Texas has offered a preferred walk-on opportunity to Under Armour All-American P Shane Tripucka of Allen. Things have picked up for Tripucka lately so he's not expected to make any moves on National Signing Day:

“Shane attended their punt (Texas) camp and won the camp this summer,” said his father, Mr. Chris Tripucka. “Coach Applewhite has actually been recruiting him for some time now. He visited for the Baylor game during last season.”

“He (Applewhite) was at Allen High School to meet with Shane,” explained Mr. Tripucka. “He met with him to give him a status update of where they are with their punters and give him details of a preferred walk-on opportunity.”

“He now has preferred walk-on opportunities from Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Boston College,” Mr. Tripucka told Hookem.com. “He has a full ride offer from Sam Houston and we are hearing a good possibility of more to come from D1 schools.”

Word got out late Saturday that two 2014 UT commitments were at Junior Days for other schools. 2014 OL Demetrius Knox joined a high school teammate at Oklahoma and 2014 RB/FB Daniel Gresham went to Ole Miss with a friend of his. Quotes from Gresham on the situation (24/7):

“Fans don’t have to worry at all,” Gresham told Hookem.com. “There’s no reason whatsoever to worry.”

“I’m totally committed to Texas,” said Gresham. “Coach (Mack) Brown is a great coach and he’s the man I want to play for. I’m excited with what the future has in store with me and Texas. The Longhorns are a great program on the rise again. I’m a big believer in the Lord and believe that the Lord gives his hardest battles to his greatest soldiers. That’s the case with Coach Brown. We’re on the upswing. It’s just a battle to get back to the top, but we will get there with him!”

“I’m very anxious. Demetrius, Lorenzo (Joe), Duke (Donald Catalon), Jerrod (Heard) and I are all hanging out the Friday before to get to know each other better, so I’m excited for that. But most of all, I’m looking forward to trying on that No. 33 jersey on. I’m ready to see it in burnt orange,” he said while laughing.”

“Of course all of us will be doing it,” said Gresham when asked if he will be talking to Texas’ top 2014 targets. “These guys need to know that Texas is one of the most storied programs in NCAA history. I’m going to tell them they need to come join us and be a part of something very special.”

Considering Frank Herron is suppose to hold a press conference Tues to announce his decision, you may want to up those odds a little. He's been committed to LSU since June, why hold a press conference to announce your decision? Hmmmm...

I sure hope this one goes Texas' way because it's very possible they go 0/4 on Billings, Meander, Robinson and Wilson. To make things worse than that, UT will have ZERO DL commtiments for 2013 if Herron sticks with LSU. There are rumors out there that he has already committed to the UT staff and is just waiting for the press conference on Tuesday to make things official. One positive to take from all of this is Larry Porter already paying huge dividends. There's no chance this happens without him and he's a great example of the things Mack could have done on the recruiting trail had he been aggressive when UT was dominant. Potentially stealing a five-star from LSU in one weekend? That just doesn't happen. I haven't seen Herron's film linked yet, so here you go:

I wasn't able to be by the computer on Friday night and most of Saturday, so the whole Major Applewhite scandal completely threw me off as I'm sure it did most of you. If you weren't able to read about it over the weekend and need a brief summary, I'll do my best to catch you up with a timeline of facts followed by some rumors:

-the former UT women's track coach, Bev Kearney, was bascially forced to resign (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8818498/texas-longhorns-coach-bev-kearney-resigns-amid-investigation) in January 2013 after being confronted about an ongoing lesbian relationship she had back in 2002 with one of her athletes. It's been a mess ever she since she left the school as she's thrown all kinds of accusations back at UT for why she was fired; she's gay, she's a woman, she's black, etc. She's also made claims that she has knowledge of other professionals employed by the university that have done similar things she has, but haven't been properly punished for it.

-enter Major Applewhite. Turns out Applewhite got down with a student trainer during Fiesta Bowl activities back in 2009. According to reports, this was a one-time occurence, Applewhite brought the information to DeLoss Dodds and Mack Brown, he was punished behind closed doors, sought counseling and straightened things out with his wife (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/big12/2013/02/02/texas-longhorns-assistant-coach-major-applewhite-student-trainer-bev-kearney-scandal/1886861/). One problem is the Texas Board of Regents was left out of the loop and that has some big egos pretty pissed off (more on that further down). This whole thing is different from Kearney's situation because even though Applewhite cheated on his wife, he did not techinally break any university or NCAA rules. Kearney did break the rules and knows it, but she wants a settlement from Texas.

-Friday night happens and Kearney/her attorney fire the first shot. So, why go after Applewhite? They know how popular and deeply revered he is within the UT community and this was their way of showing UT they mean business. It is thought that Kearney has a lot more dirt and other names she's willing to release if UT doesn't act quickly. Rumors go that Rick Barnes is involved along with football coaches going back to the early 2000s who aren't even employed by Texas currently. There's really no telling how dramatic this whole things gets when you consider how hard Mack tried to protect Cleve Bryant from his sex scandal back in 2010.

-the Texas Board of Regents met yesterday afternoon via teleconference but, as expected, no immediate action was taken. If anything significant is to occur, it likely won't happen until after National Signing Day. The issue isn't just Applewhite's affair, but the fact that the Board of Regents didn't know about any of this and now they're finding out that there could be a lot more dirt beyond Applewhite. Factor in the main UT sports being mediocre and it has a lot of the big money donors debating cleaning house completely. "Embarrassment" is a good word to describe how things have piled up the last three years.

-as you can imagine, rumors range from everyone being fired to nothing happening and this whole thing blowing over. To make things even more interesting, Applewhite has hired big-time lawyer and Texas booster, Joe Jamail, to represent him just in case things get ugly. A lot more information should surface this week but one scenario I've seen that seems to make the most sense has Dodds being fired, Mack getting a final year mainly because of timing and there isn't signifcant time for a coaching search and Applewhite will be retained. UT President, Bill Powers, is a different story as he's been clashing with Rick Perry for some time now and there are several political agendas being pushed.

No actually after watching guys like Peter Gardere, Ty Dietmer, Major Applewhite, Josh Huepal and Colt McCoy, I'm more partial to the guys that don't have the NFL pedagree or look like NFL QBs.

Gilbert is the 1st QB with NFL attributes to not make it at Texas, remember a guy named Shea Morenz, top QB in the country Cannon Arm, but never could beat out a guy named James Brown.

Also quick queston; How is Junior Days? It is essentially an unofficial visit and the expense of travel, hotel stay, etc. is paid for by the family of the visitor. Some recruits simply
can't afford to travel too far from home for these junior days or other camps that schools put on...it can also be a good indicator on how
serious the level of interest is from a recruit who is willing/able to travel long distance to attend.

As for the Billings news, I just can't believe you guys got shutout on the DL this year. Pretty crazy.

A&M OT commit JJ Gustafson has decided to gray shirt his first year at A&M due to two knee surgeries he's had.

A&M currently had 2 spots left open in its 2013 class of 25 but this now makes it 3 open scholarships. Not sure if they will try to sign another or just take their chances with Hall and Prevot and call it quits. Prevot seems like an A&M lock right now but Hall is reportedly going back and forth between A&M and Washington.

A&M has not been a serious consideration for Tony Brown. It's a name he's thrown out but trust me A&M is not a serious contender and I say that from first-hand knowledge and not internet fodder.

LSU is the team to beat even before news of his sister. If not there I think it will be a new name surfacing that catches his appeal (somewhere like FSU). He has never been overly excited about A&M and the negative recruiting regarding Texas has really impacted him (namely knowing defensive staff is almost certain for overhaul).

This will be biggest miss for Texas b/c Brown has been long-time Texas fan and has a LOT of people really close to him that love Texas. :bang

Twitter saying Kameron Miles to Texas, allegedly.

Max Olson ‏@max_olson (https://twitter.com/max_olson) Got a late-night text from @WMrecruiting (https://twitter.com/WMrecruiting) telling me Kameron Miles is flipping to Texas on #SigningDay (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23SigningDay&src=hash). Good one, Kyle.

i think that was played up a bit, but could be part of reason she chose LSU. at some point big bro wants to be nice and the media plays it up. same story got played on jeffcoat as his sis went to OU.

Maybe it's a definitive sign that changes need to be made when Texas gets out-recruited by Ole Miss :bang This is freakin' embarassing!!

Wescott Eberts ‏@SBN_Wescott Does seem like big clue RT @SportsDayHS (http://www.spurstalk.com/SportsDayHS): Sign at Lancaster says DE Daeshon Hall to Texas A&M. Hasn't officially signed yet, but a big clue.

Very nice pickup for the Aggies if true...this was a huge need and a big loss for the Horns.

True. If the last couple of years have proven anything it's that cheaters get away with it and compete for MNC's.

Prevot to Oregon

I wouldn't lose sleep over. I've seen Prevot at a camp and was shocked he was so highly ranked - frankly I've never been so surprised by seeing a recruit live. Yeah he's fast and athletic and that was obvious, but he seemed like least intense guy out there. A bad combo for a guy with a long way to go to develop physically.

He just didn't seem like he wanted to be here. He had every reason to come here and ends up in Oregon (like Bralon Addison last year). I'd be mad if we missed on Hall too, but I'm very happy with the class.
