Update on scholarship numbers. I was going through the roster this morning out of curiosity and Texas currently sits at 69 scholarship players (if I'm counting correctly). Both WR Cade McCrary and DS (deep snapper) Nate Boyer were awarded scholarships for last season, but I don't know if they'll count towards the numbers for 2013 so I'll leave them out for now.
Graduation
RB Jeremy Hills
RB DJ Monroe
FB Ryan Roberson
WR Marquise Goodwin
TE Barrett Matthews
TE DJ Grant
OL Luke Poehlmann
DE Alex Okafor
S Kenny Vaccaro
P Alex King (Master's degree)
Attrition
TE Trey Graham (forgoing fifth year of eligibility, graduated)
OL Thomas Ashcraft (forgoing fifth year of eligibility, graduated)
DT Kyle Kriegel (forgoing fifth year of eligibility, graduated)
DT Brandon Moore (NFL Draft)
Factor in the the 13 commitments from the 2013 class and you're sitting at 82 scholarship players for fall camp as of this morning. At least 15 of those guys are entering their last year of eligibility so it looks like Texas is preparing to take a large 2014 class of 20+. LB Jordan Hicks may have two more years to play if he's awarded a medical redshirt for this past season.

JUCO LB De'Vondre Campbell took an official visit to K-State this past weekend. That was his fourth and he has one to go. I didn't catch on when it happened before Christmas, but Sal Sunseri (former Tennessee defensive coordinator) is now the DEs coach at Florida State. Since Campbell was originally committed to Tennessee and he's from Florida, this could be something to look out for.

24/7 saying that Texas offered 2014 OG/C Terrell Cuney of Japer this morning. He can't make the February 10th Junior Day but he'll be at the second one on the 23rd. That's the fourth offensive line offer for 2014 with OL Demetrius Knox (committed), OL Cameron Robinson of West Monroe, LA and OL Braden Smith of Olathe, KS.

Cuney is a beast. Saw his highlights back in November, and I really like his meanstreak! I'm glad that the coaches, as of right now, are only offering elite players, and a darn good Cuney at the offensive line. Wasn't there some talk about that mammoth of a man Orlando Brown of Peachtree Ridge, GA.?

Yes, he has said he will visit either Florida State or Texas soon depending on his family's schedule. Hard to tell if he has an official offer from Texas but he's definitely a target and he speaks with Knox quite a bit.

Bad news on JUCO LB De'Vondre Campbell. That K-State defensive depth chart is looking really good to him with the loss of 10 starters. See the quote below from his junior college coach:
"He told me that he really enjoyed himself on the visit. He said that right now, he was leaning toward Kansas State, but he wants to take one more visit."

Quotes from the high school coach of RB Peyton Barber (OrangeBloods):
"He's a big back and he runs well. He's an 11-flat 100 meter guy. He's about 6-foot, 215 or 220," DeCristofaro said. "He's very thick, very strong. He power cleans 340, benches 375, squats 575. He's just a big, strong back."
"When coach Porter left and went to Texas, he talked to Mack Brown and they talked about any running backs he had been recruiting. (Barber) is committed to Ole Miss, but he's always been intrigued by Texas. He's always liked Texas."
"I think he wants to play in the SEC which is huge. The SEC has done so well last seven or eight years. And he has family in the Oxford area. But apparently has some kin in the Austin area, so that's intriguing for him."
"All our kids are great kids. All the kids come lift, do what they're asked. But especially those two. As good as they are, they're here every single day," DeCristofaro said. "(Barber) is a quiet kid. He's a good character kid, a very spiritual kid. Those two don't cuss, don't drink. They're just gym rat kids."

Per 24/7, Mack Brown is on the road recruiting today and he'll check on a bunch of 2014s: OL Demetrius Knox, RB/FB Daniel Gresham, QB Jerrod Heard, S Jamal Adams and DE Solomon Thomas. Wyatt and Davis already saw Thomas this morning and it sounds like he's the prospect being recruited the hardest right now. Some of them will probably be pulled out of class briefly but the coaches can't sit down and have a conversation with them about future plans. Pretty much everything goes through the high school coaches in these situations. Mack has never done this for juniors so it's another sign that Texas is trying to get some recruiting momentum back and hold on to the guys they already have.

FYI that OL Rami Hammad was not offered yesterday by Stacy Searels. He was invited to Austin for a visit but Hammad said he's not willing to cancel any of his other school visits and make a trip to Austin without an offer in place. Word is UT would be the favorite if that were to happen, so this could be a smart move on Hammad's part and it will force Texas to speed up the process if they want him badly enough. He is scheduled to see OU and TCU in the near future.

24/7 saying that DeSoto's phones are blowing up with coaches inquiring about RB Dontre Wilson now that the Oregon job has opened up. Texas did visit DeSoto recently but Wilson is still a longshot. Coach Mathis said his upcoming visits should be scheduled rather quickly and I'm assuming UT won't be one of them. Ohio State and Notre Dame are being mentioned the most (Ohio State is where a lot of people think he ultimately ends up).

I saw where you guys offered Sebastian Larue. Hearing he is contemplating a visit to Austin on Feb 1st.

Another note on Larue, He is visiting A&M this weekend and none other than Johnny Manziel is his host. I'd actually be somewhat surprised if he didn't end up at A&M. Something to watch though. He's also planning on visiting Notre Dame.
That also makes the offer to Kyrion Parker even smarter though. I'm not so sure he sticks around if A&M gets yet another WR commit.

Quotes from the high school coach of OL/DL Andrew Billings (OrangeBloods). He'll be officially visiting TCU this weekend and Baylor next weekend:
"His family told both of those schools (Baylor and TCU) he would take official visits," Waco head coach Marty Herbst said. "That's why his dad was upset at him back when he pretty much verbally committed to Texas. He told him he needed to stick with his word and take the other visits."
"Could he change his mind? I guess anything is possible. A couple Texas coaches were in last week. He seems to really, really like those guys, Bo Davis and Darrell Wyatt. They came to see him, and there seemed like there was a pretty good chemistry there with the three of them, sitting there watching them talk.
"I can't say it's a formality that he's going to TCU and Baylor for visits. He's an 18-year-old kid and can he change his mind. The only reason I would say it's not a foregone conclusion is because Texas doesn't get to go last and get the last shot."
"He pretty much said I'm coming (to Texas). His dad normally goes on all the trips with him, but his dad was sick that week and didn't go. His mother went with him. His dad wasn't necessarily against what he did, he just wanted him to keep his word."
"I think he likes coach (Bo) Davis that much and relates to him. In talking to him, hearing what coach Davis sees in him, talking to him about getting in the rotation right away, they're both weight lifters, Davis has a pretty impressive track record with his players," Herbst said.
"He was our best player. You normally don't say that about a lineman, you say it about a running back or quarterback. But he was the best player on the team," Herbst said. "He led by example. He's academic all state, a good kid and works his butt off. He's rubbed off on other kids, they've seen the success he's had and his work ethic."

Hmmm Hall, Smythe, Hicks, and RSJ.
I think Smythe was the biggest loss simply because we have no TE who is the full package. Swaim will be a great run-block guy but that's all he does, McFarland has the ideal height and athleticism but he's not particularly good at blocking or catching. He had two great throws from Ash in the alamo bowl that he didn't catch. Would have rather not lost any of the guys but losing Smythe hurts the most.

I really like Hall. He has the ideal frame and build. He just got the DMN DPOY award and is a player who can play immediately the day he steps on campus. We lose a lot on our already thin D-Line so we really need him IMO. One of my favorite players in Texas this year. Didn't think we had a shot but glad to see we do now. I would rather have him then Prevot.

BREAKING... Orlando (Fla.) #Rivals250 4-star WR Tony Stevens has switched his commitment from Texas A&M to Auburn. More to come.
Apparently Sumlin pulled his offer for the visit as he took it without informing the staff. Could be spin, but that's what I've heard. I'm not worried about it, we have too many WR's as it is, especially if we get Larue
We have an in home with Levonte Whitfield tomorrow, current FSU commit. Strange, because people think Stevens may end up at FSU even after his flip to Auburn.

Recruiting has been crazy this season and with this staff. I have a feeling this isn't the last switch somebody will be making that we currently have committed. I also expect A&M to land some guys on NSD that people might not expect.
Sucks about Stevens, IMO he was the best WR in this loaded class we have. Sounds like Sumlin pulled his offer though once he found out about this visit, this is the same reason Kyrion Parker cancelled his visit to Cal this weekend and re-affirmed his commitment to A&M. Sumlin is in a crunch numbers wise and he isn't letting these guys take visits without knowing about them.

Quotes from OL Rami Hammad after his official visit to Texas (24/7):
“It was awesome,” Hammad said of the visit. “I loved it. It was really nice. I had a great time this weekend and it was just awesome.”
“I did decommit from Baylor today after I left Texas,” Hammad told Hookem.com. “So now my plan is to announce on Wednesday. I’ll make my final decision and I’ll be choosing from Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU.”
“The whole trip was so impressive,” said Hammad. “The facilities were great. The education I could get there is outstanding as well. I loved the people I met and I loved the town. Everyone was very energetic and it felt really good being there. Just everyone and everything was so awesome.”
“As for the coaches, I really like them a lot,” Hammad explained. “I loved every single coach that I met. From Coach (Mack) Brown to Coach (Stacy) Searels to Bennie Wylie, they all were just great guys. I liked them all. I liked what I was hearing from them, especially Coach Wylie. If I were to go there, he would really make me into a better player. I thought a lot of him and the rest of the coaches there.”
“Education and football,” he said. “Education is a big part of my decision. The four schools I chose can all offer a good one, but they also all offers a top football program. I’m here to learn, but I’m also here to play at the end of the day. Whichever school I choose will have the best balance of both and I’ll feel the most comfortable with both playing and learning.”

Latest with 2014 CB Nick Watkins of Dallas Bishop Dunne (24/7). He will be at the first Junior Day on February 10th:
“Coach (Bruce) Chambers and Coach Brown stopped by on Monday,” Watkins said. “I didn’t get to see them since I was in class when they stopped by, but my coaches told me that it went very good. They invited me to their junior days on February 10th, so I’m going.”
“I like Texas a lot,” he told Hookem.com. “I grew up watching them, so I’ll always like them. They’re a program I’m definitely interested in. That’s why it’s fun to always head down there. I like the coaches a lot. They’re all very friendly and great people. Plus, it’s DBU. You have to love that. If you’re a defensive back, then Texas can get you prepared for the next level for sure.”
“I want to hear what they (Texas) have to say,” said Watkins. “They had a good season this past year. Some people might call it a slump, but I know they’re coming back. I see them having an even better season next year with ten wins or more. They’ll be good.”
“They’re definitely up there,” Watkins explained. “Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA, Baylor, Michigan, Ohio State and SMU are the ones who are sticking out the most to me right now.”

I can see a conversation going on like this: Porter: Elliott, we want you at Texas. You would be our only back for the class. Elliott: Thanks but Im solid to OSU. Im their priority. Porter: Doesnt look like it, Coach Meyer is also going after another RB named Dontre Wilson. Are you sure that you are a priority? Elliott: You're right coach, youve opened my eyes. I will have to talk to coach Meyer. Elliott to Meyer: Coach, I feel like I am not a priority to this team anymore. Texas is looking at me and Im going to take a visit and open my recruitment since you are now taking multiple RBs. Coach Meyer: No, thats not necessary. We were just looking around but we have decided to just stick with you and make you our main priority. Elliott: Thanks coach for clearing things out. Im solid to OSU and wont look around. Coach Meyer to Dontre Wilson: We have decided to just stick with one RB in our class. We have no room for you. Wilson: ok, thanks coach. Wilson to Porter: Coach, OSU is not looking at me anymore. I guess that you are my second best option. Im committing to you. lol. that would be the dream scenario right there. of course, im just dreaming.

Obviously Ezekiel is a longshot, but we should remember that him and Raulerson became very good friends at the Army All-American game. There were some pictures, that I cannot find now, where Elliott threw the "Hook 'Em" handsign in front of some trophies. iirc someone asked if it was Raulerson who made him do it, and he replied with something like "no comment". But I do like that Porter is going ANYWHERE to find this class' RB. Collins is still my favorite though.

Any word/guess on how big the '14 class is going to be? Over/under 25?
Also, any words on som potentiel OOS linebackers? Outside of Hoza Scott and Cameron Hampton the state of Texas doesn't seem to have that many big time linebacker prospects, do they? Where does Otaro Alaka, Zach Whitley, James David and Josh Mabin stand compared to this years class?
I know 5-star Raekwon McMillan has been mentioned but he is supposedly a Ohio State/Georgia battle. I would love to see Texas contact Dwight Williams of Juniperro Serra (Cal.) or Clifton Garrett of Plainfield South (Il.)

Quotes from 2014 OG/C Terrell Cuney of Jasper (24/7):
“Recruiting has picked up for me,” said Cuney. “More and more schools are becoming interested. TCU stopped by my practice this week to check on me. I’ve obviously heard from Texas, along with Oklahoma State, LSU and some others. I can feel it’s about to heat up though.”
“Texas is definitely my number one at this point,” Cuney said. “I would say that Oklahoma State is my number two, followed by LSU at three.”
“The Longhorns have shown a lot of interest in me first off,” explained Cuney. “They’ve shown a lot of love. Plus, Coach (Stacy) Searels is real cool and I like him a lot. They have a winning tradition too and I was really impressed with their bowl game victory. I think they turn it around very soon. I also grew up a Longhorn fan, so that helps!”
“Man everybody in my neighborhood and my town that plays sports all talk about Texas,” he said. “So for me to get all this attention like I’m getting and them being this interested in me is amazing to me. I’m just so humble and so blessed for all of it. I can’t believe it.”
“I’m really excited about it (the Texas Junior Day),” Cuney told Hookem.com. “I’m anxious to see everything. I want to check it all out. I want to see the school and the dorms especially. I know as far as the facilities go, they’re going to have very nice things. Probably the best. So I’m not worried about all that. I want to see the other part of it, though.”

These were the recruiting notes from 24/7 this morning...
-both DT Andrew Billings and DT A'Shawn Robinson have been receiving a lot of negative recruiting from other schools saying Texas is essentially lying about their future on the defensive side of the ball and they'll end up on the offensive line once they get to Austin. Now that UT has five solid commitments for the OL in 2013 with the additions of Harrison and Hammad, that argument is out the window. Also, Robinson's official visit to Alabama last weekend was described as being "ok." Texas definitely remains the favorite but USC is still considered a legitimate threat.
-nothing new on QB Kenny Hill other than him being a "longshot." He'll be at A&M this weekend for his official visit.
-Texas is starting to take a harder look at RB Dre'Vian Young of Aldine Nimitz (brother of former Texas RB Selvin Young). He's currently committed to Utah but Texas is his "dream school."

Quotes from OL Rami Hammad after his commitment to Texas (OrangeBloods). Hard not to be excited for the kid:
"I knew he (Stacy Searels) was interested … at first, it was regular interest," Hammad, decked out in Texas gear, said in the Irving head coach's office on Wednesday evening. "He said he'll come see me Tuesday, and then the next day I get the offer. He said, 'I loved you from the beginning, and I regret not recruiting you as a junior. I hope this doesn't affect us in this process.' I went up there and visited. I sat there with coach and went through a lot of things, and getting information from here and there … if you go to UT, you're set for life. Like they said, it's a 40-year decision, not a four-year decision. Everything fell into place, and it felt like home."
"They (Hammad's family) said to me, 'Take it easy. I know you're excited. Make sure we compare it to other schools.' I said there is no comparison," Hammad said. "This is where I want to be. I had over 50 offers. I was really blessed to have the opportunity to choose where I wanted to go. All those offers were just like a checkmark on a book. This one, it felt like so much more. I was so excited when I got the offer."
"At first I thought I was solid to Baylor, but then as soon as I talked to Texas it was just a big question mark that popped up," stated Hammad. "I knew it was a dream school. I was comfortable with Baylor for quite a bit, and never thought I was going to switch. But when a dream school drops in, it's hard to deny an offer like that. And I'm not just going to go there and be a guy. I want to be the guy on the offensive line. That's one thing I said. 'I want to make sure I'm the guy you want, coach.' And he confirmed that to me, and after reassuring me with Mack Brown seeing me, I felt like that was the place I needed to go."
"As a kid, my parents were divorced and we drove through Austin to get from Dallas to McAllen," Texas' newest commitment said. "Every time I drive by, I'd see the Longhorns playing and I'd see all the fans. I used to pass by, and I said, 'I want to be that guy on that field playing and having all those people watching me.' If you grow up in Texas, all you see right and left are Longhorns. It just kind of fell into place and it turned into my dream school. Early in the recruiting process, I didn't get the offer and I know they offer early. I never thought it would be something that would come true, and when it did … it was just amazing."
"I actually met Vince Young at our dinner at the Vince Young Steakhouse," Hammad said with a big smile. "I went to Mack Brown's house. I saw campus. I just had an absolute blast. I loved the city. It was like New York in a small town. Academically, they're really high on the charts. In my head, I was thinking academics? Check. Football? Check. Tradition? Check. Do I like this place? Check. And that was something big with me considering my religion and academics and stuff. I wanted to make sure it fit, but I knew it would."
"We watched a little bit of 'drill tape' just to get a feel of how he does things," stated Hammad about his meeting with Searels, the Texas offensive line coach. "But he wants to put the best guys on the field, and that's something I saw in his eyes when he talked to me. He said the best five will play. That's all that matters. That's all I want is an opportunity. And if I get that opportunity, I know I'll shine. And he really sounded truthful when he said that. He's played freshmen. It's a hard thing to do for a coach to put a senior on the bench when a freshman is better than him."
"They were really happy," Hammad said of the UT coaches. "He (Searels) said, 'We're going to be the best offensive line in the nation.' I guarantee we have the best offensive line in the nation. I want to add to that and go win a national championship."
"Something people don't know about me is that nothing has ever been given to me," stated Hammad. "Seventh grade year I was on 'B' team; eighth grade year I was on 'B' team; ninth grade year I was on 'B' team; then I was on junior varsity; and then first year of varsity … boom. I shined. Nothing was ever given. I always had to work and fight hard at every level. I always believed. I had the physical ability. I just needed to learn the game. In the end, it's really paid off. If it takes time to build up and you go the hard route, it's hard for someone to knock you off your route. I truly believe that."
"I go 100 percent," said Texas' 15th commitment. "I will always go to the whistle blows, and sometimes over that. But I try to keep that under control. I'm a hard worker in the weight room. I'm a hard worker on the team. I'm always on time. I just love the game. It's just really a blessing and I'm trying to take advantage of it."
Update to that list: Dylan Gardner will be in attendance.

In case you didn't know, Robinson took an official visit to Texas this weekend, which will be his last official visit before National Signing Day in February. "We didn't get to talk a whole lot about it, but it sounded like it went really good," said the source. "He had a great time on his visit. The trip answered a lot of questions he had about the campus, school, academics, coaches and even how all they plan to use him. He was really happy with the way everything went."
The five-star Robinson committed to Texas back in February of 2012, but once he started taking visits, many questioned if he would stay that way. It looks like this weekend might have sealed the deal.
"I believe it only solidified his commitment to the University of Texas," the source told Hookem.com. "Like I said he was very happy with it all and how it all worked out. He had a great time seeing everything and going to the basketball game as well. It was a lot of fun for him and it sounds like he enjoyed a taste of things to come for him down in Austin."
Robinson is the No. 26 overall player in the nation and No. 3 at his position.

Former longhorn pledge Durham Smythe (TE) committed to Notre Dame earlier today. Never really read about what happened with him, just an FYI if anyone cares.
Losing Smythe hurts. Pure TEs are very, very rare in state. It's a position UT must go out of state for in the future. California would be a great place to start.
In my opinion, the Smythes made a football decision. They don't like how UT utilizes their TEs and they went in another direction.
I'm genuinely concerned about UT's DE depth. I feel pretty good about Ced Reed, but I think the position needs more help. I'd like to see UT sign 3 high school DEs in addition to Roberson, and possibly look at JUCO DE for 2014. Hall can definitely play and is a loss.

Quotes from 2014 LB Otaro Alaka (24/7):
“When he (Oscar Giles) stopped by my school I didn’t hear anything about an invite,” said Alaka. “But later he got a hold of me to let me know they wanted me down in Austin for their junior day. They invited me to the one on Feb. 23 and I do plan on going for sure.”
“If they (Texas) offered they would definitely be in my top two,” he said. “Right now it’s Oklahoma and Northwestern, but if they offered it would be OU and Texas. I’m not sure if I would commit on the spot, but it is definitely possible. I would consider it.”
“Honestly, I’ve always liked Texas a lot,” Alaka told Hookem.com. “I’ve been a fan for a long time. I also like the fact that they are a strong academic school that is in- state.”
“Right now Oklahoma is recruiting me the hardest,” said Alaka. “Besides Texas, I’ve heard from Oklahoma State a lot too. Nebraska and Texas Tech have both recently offered. I also have offers from Arkansas, Northwestern, Ole Miss and some others. But if Texas offered them and Oklahoma would be my favorites."

Considering the low amount of stud OL in Texas in 2014 this was pretty much a no-brainer for A&M, who really needs to start working on the OL.

I like this guy a lot and hope Texas looks at him down the road if they decide they have some wiggle room for 2014. As things stand, I think Searels wants to take 2014 OL Terrell Cuney of Jasper and then really slow it down. 24/7 seems to think the target number for 2014 is three since Texas is about to sign a large OL class.

Apparently Texas has cooled off '14 RB Nathan Starks of Bishop Gorman. During the season he heard a lot from them, but now he hasn't heard from them for a while. He would like to attend a Junior Day, but it's too expensive for a one-day event. He's planning on coming to Austin either in the summer or for an official next season. Texas, Oklahoma, USC and Notre Dame is still his top four, with Oklahoma at the top.

Quotes from 2014 WR Willy Ivery of Sulphur Springs (24/7):
“Texas actually stopped by my school today,” Ivery said on Monday evening. “It was the wide receivers coach, Coach (Darrell) Wyatt. I didn’t really talk to him any, but he talked to my head coach and I was invited to their junior day on February 23.”
“I definitely plan on being there,” said Ivery. “I will be sure to fit it in my schedule. I like Texas a lot. My official top five right now is Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. That is in order. I’d say that Texas is one of the schools recruiting me the hardest right now, along with Texas Tech and TCU.”
“I grew up loving them,” Ivery said of Texas. “I love the Horns’ tradition. Plus, I’ve been to Austin a few times and I’ve really enjoyed the place.”
“He’s (Darell Wyatt) a really great coach,” explained Ivery. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. I haven’t talked to him a whole lot yet, but from our conversations so far, he seems like a very cool person.”
“I’ve been there (Texas) before,” said Ivery. “But this time I would really like to check out the campus. I also want a chance to get to see all of the facilities. I’m hoping I get to talk to all the coaches for a while and meet them and the players as well.”
“I would love that a lot (an offer from Texas),” Ivery told Hookem.com. “They are in my top schools, as I said, and one of my biggest considerations. There would be a good chance that I might go ahead and commit on the spot. I’m not going to lie, it’s highly likely.”

Good job with the Junior Days list, TFloss! A lot of talent on there! But I'm really missing Mansfield S Brandon Simmons. Even with the loaded DB class in Texas next year, he is probably the top strong/in-the-box safety. I really like his hitting ability. Anyone know where Texas stands with him?

Surprised Mack and Texas haven't been in contact with Jameil. Too much pride to take a transferring Aggie? Jameil is a real nice player and will not have to sit out a year due to him graduating early.

Some Texas House representative has filed a bill that would require A&M/Texas to play every year. I think it's stupid. Unfortunately, the rep is an Aggie. Hope it fails.

We're finishing up a contact period that started on November 25th and will end on February 2nd. With the exception of a few quiet periods in there (mostly around the holidays and all-star games), assistant coaches are allowed up to SIX off-campus visits with an individual recruit (no more than once per week) and head coaches can have ONE in-home/school visit at a time of their choosing (usually saved for the very end). Coaches making phone calls is still limited to once per week but recruits can call any time they want. I believe Facebook correspondence is unlimited.

Fournette is an LSU/Bama lock.
Texas' hopes are with Larry Porter and rumor goes that he has a connection with Fournette's family (not sure what it is). It's encouraging that he's so familiar with that area of the country as well. And I don't know if he still has the same position, but DE Shiro Davis' high school coach was the defensive coordinator for Fournette's team this past season. UT is definitely not the favorite but there are some positives to work with.
