Fort Bend Marshall has a lot of talent so this could've just been a routine stop, but it's still interesting considering things are a bit shaky with DE Daeshon Hall and DE Torrodney Prevot maintains that he won't be committing anytime soon. Could Hollins be back in the picture?

Keep in mind that the staff was probably there to see OL Maurice Porter as well. He's a name that hasn't received a lot of publicity lately.

I put "TE" because I think that's what he's going to be at Notre Dame.

Quick piece of info from Nebraska's 24/7 site on CB Cole Luke. Worth keeping in mind since Smith may end up taking his time.

Luke doesn’t have quite the connection to Nebraska, and has several major offers to consider. It appears he’s waiting on a possible Texas offer, but claims offers from Arkansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Oregon. The Sooners appear to have a strong lead here.

I like Von Bell and Priest Willis from AZ from all the out of state prospects. Texas has always been a favorite of Willis, not sure what Texas ties he has, but I wish the staff would offer this kid. After Davis, one of those 2 would be my preference. Smith is enjoying the attention that he's getting and doesn't look to commit anytime soon. Luke would be nice, but I definitely prefer Willis.

Per 24/7, S Marcell Harris will be receiving a visit from UT next week. He also spoke with Akina over the phone recently.

He's a really nice player, but more of a SEC type than Big12. If he was willing to move to OLB, which apparently he is not, I would be all over him. With the other options available, I would be ok if he didn't sign with the horns. Give me Von Bell, Davis and one of Willis or Luke and I'm a happy man as far as DBs this year.

24/7 reporting UT stopped by Beaumont Ozen HS yesterday to see 2014 DB Tony Brown. He's one of several DBs who is an offer candidate for that class.

Quotes from 2014 LB Cameron Hampton of Dallas Carter (24/7):

“They tell me that I remind them a little bit of Jesse Armstead, that I play like him some times,” Hampton said, referring to the former Miami Hurricane and NFL linebacker regarded as one of the best prospects the state has ever produced. “That's an honor for them to say that. It's humbling and it makes me want to work hard.”

“I've seen Coach Chambers around and he seems like a great person,” Hampton said. “Texas is a place close to home and it's a great program. They're one of my top schools.”

“If Texas offered me it would be an honor and something I'd strongly consider,” Hampton said. “I'd be honored to be a part of their program. Texas is a school that I really admire.”

“I watched them all of the time when they'd be on TV,” Hampton said. “I've just always liked the way Florida has played. They're up there with Texas for me.”

“It was a good game (the OU spring game) and the coaches were real nice,” Hampton said. “I got to meet Coach (Mike) Stoops and he told me he'd be watching me, which was good.”

Duane Akina and Oscar Giles are at Lancaster HS today to see DE Daeshon Hall and 2014 DB Nick Harvey (24/7).

TFloss32
05-02-2012, 05:15 PM
Also from 24/7, the coaches made trips to see the following guys:

DE/LB Deon Hollins, Jr., Fort Bend Marshall
2014 DE/LB Hoza Scott, La Porte

Fort Bend Marshall has a lot of talent so this could've just been a routine stop, but it's still interesting considering things are a bit shaky with DE Daeshon Hall and DE Torrodney Prevot maintains that he won't be committing anytime soon. Could Hollins be back in the picture?

Update on this...was reading Inside Texas this morning and the visit by Oscar Giles was mainly for OL Maurice Porter. Hollins' father said things are basically the same between his son and UT at the moment and there is no renewed interest to report.

Quotes from ATH Chevoski Collins who was recently offered by OU:

"It went down (on Monday). (OU assistant) Coach James Patton wrote me on Facebook and told me that coach Mike Stoops was going to come through. When he got there, they called me, and I went down there to talk to him real quick."

"They want to bring me in as an athlete. Coach (Jay) Norvell, the wide receiver coach, is supposed to be coming down next week to check on me too," Collins said.

"Texas really got to see me play every position (on Tuesday)," Collins said. "They said they like my athleticism, how I never came off the field, things like that."

"I always talk to coach Buckels (from Baylor) on Facebook, so it was normal to have him there."

"It's very pleasing to have coaches there to come see you," Collinls said. "I just try to stay humble, do everything I've been doing before."

"I like their (Texas) history and the things they do with their players, especially DBs," Collins said. "They've got a bunch of DBs in the league. They just have a good program overall."

We have our first out-of-state name for the 2014 class. OT Cameron Robinson from Monroe, LA is mentioning Texas in his Top 3 and he's already spoken with Stacy Searels. He's mentioned wanting to make it to Austin for summer camp but that's still up in the air. Not a surprise but Alabama and LSU have the early lead. His father is Steve Foley who played LB for the Bengals, Chargers and Texans.

Quotes from OL Kent Perkins:

"I'm more relaxed (since committing). I'm not so stressed," Perkins said. "A lot of colleges are coming at you and that has slowed down a lot, but my coach says they're still going to come. I'm enjoying the space."

"I haven't really gotten a chance to bond with him (Stacy Searels) as much, but I know he's a good person," Perkins said. "That's one of the reasons why I committed, because I got to see him coach and I know I'm going to enjoy it when I go down there."

"It's Texas, so a lot of people are going to go to the games," Perkins said. "I can't wait until the games and I just can't wait to play."

"I feel real good and I know I'm blessed and I don't take that for granted," he said. "That just makes me work harder on the field and in the classroom."

FYI on WR Ra'Shaad Samples...he tweeted about an "announcement" coming up today but it's already been reported that it has nothing to do with a commitment. 24/7 followed that up with a statement that he will NOT be committing to Texas in the future and the staff has already turned their attention towards WR Robbie Rhodes. My guess is Samples will be headed to College Station as they've had some momentum behind the scenes with this recruitment for a few weeks.

With commits from RSJ, Oliver, and Warrick I think we held the door open long enough for Samples to come on in...now it's time to move on to Rhodes.

I wish we would've moved first or sooner on Massington as I think we may have missed the boat especially now that he has that USC offer...only way I could see us having a strong shot is by offering his teammate Miles.

Also, didn't I read recently that Rhodes is favoring Baylor? Oh well, if we don't snag Rhodes I say we add to our numbers at another position, if needed or give Naashon Hughes a full scholly.

This! Keeping a good relationship with Coach Samples is important and it makes sense to give him more time, but if the tea leaves say that he's not coming, move on. Also wonder how much TJ's commit to aggy last year has to do with their his interest in colleyville.

With commits from RSJ, Oliver, and Warrick I think we held the door open long enough for Samples to come on in...now it's time to move on to Rhodes.

I'm not sure Samples would've picked Texas anyway (I whiffed on my February prediction), but OrangeBloods is saying that the staff supposedly told him they're pulling out of the race and are focusing elsewhere. I think 24/7 has the same information and that's why they're so confident he won't be committing to UT. I agree that he had enough time to make a decision.

Other than attempting to keep a good relationship with Dallas Skyline and Coach Samples, it's a head scratcher that UT went about things the way they did and were willing to wait it out (especially after his injury) while a guy like Massington was blowing up. Like we've discussed since February, UT needs to offer that deep threat they don't currently have even if it costs them Samples because Warrick already has the slot position covered. He can also play on the outside and possibly in a Wildcat formation. Getting Samples after Warrick committed was just gravy and an additional weapon to work with.

Fortunately for UT, Rhodes is still open and it sounds like they've zeroed in on him. Good size, track speed and you can line him up in several spots. Hopefully he'll have a productive meeting with the coaches next weekend when he's in Austin.

TFloss32

Also, didn't I read recently that Rhodes is favoring Baylor?

You read that correctly. However, I interpreted it as him more or less mentioning that Baylor was giving him the most attention or he talks with their coaches the most rather than him actually being a Baylor lean. Could be wrong but I know he's a kid that doesn't focus on recruiting as much as others. I know part of that is because his father is sick (believe he has cancer at the moment).

TFloss32
05-03-2012, 03:02 PM
Good news. OrangeBloods saying ATH Chevoski Collins has been offered by UT as a defensive back. No word yet if this move is a reflection of UT's positioning with other DBs or if they just like Collins that much. He's the cousin of DE Cedric Reed and has always liked Texas, so he could enter the mix soon. I like the move because he's an aggressive player, he's a lot like Warrick in the sense that you can plug him into different spots on the field and you can still pursue M. Smith without having to worry about him ultimately picking another school. Wyatt and Akina both loved him at the underclassmen summer camp last June.

In our efforts to Maintaining a good relationship with the Skyline pipeline we got screwed on this one. We wont get Samples, we lose a better prospect that we put on the back burner for Samples, and it looks like Texas A&M is gonna be drawing from this pipeline more than we will for a few years. :bang

Quotes from ATH Chevoski Collins (24/7):

“[Thursday] morning Coach Brown gave my coaches a call telling them he wanted to talk to me,” said Collins. “So my coach called me out of class and then Coach Brown called me back. He basically said that they wanted to give me an offer to the University of Texas and would be glad to have me if I was interested. He explained that I’m being offered as a defensive back, although I’m not sure if that means at safety or corner.”

“Ideally I would like to play wide receiver once I get to college,” Collins said. “But, if it came down to it, I don’t mind playing defensive back either. If that’s where schools want me at, that’s where I’ll play. But, like I said, I’d prefer wide receiver if I had my choice.”

“I know Coach (Duane) Akina has done a lot of good at that position,” he told Hookem.com. “I know he’s put a bunch of guys in the league. That’s one thing that makes me not worry about playing defense. So if that’s what it takes, then so be it.”

“At the moment I don’t have any favorites or anything,” explained Collins. “At this point, I’m just open to anyone really. Anyone who is interested in me and is serious about it, I’ll take a look at it. I’m not real sure when I want to commit or anything, so I’ll be looking at everything closely.”

“I’ll be hitting up a lot of camps this summer,” he said. “Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU and some out of state ones like Oklahoma and LSU as well. That will give me a chance to see the schools I have some interest in. Then maybe I can go from there and see what happens.”

TFloss32
05-04-2012, 09:44 AM
Quotes from CB Cole Luke (24/7):

“Many schools have been in contact, even in just the recent weeks,” Luke told Hookem.com. “LSU, California, Nebraska and a few others have stopped by recently. Other schools are sending me stuff or getting in touch with me somehow.”

“It’s definitely not true,” Luke said. “They (Oklahoma) are not my number one. I do have a top seven though and they are in it. But, then again, so are Washington, Nebraska, Notre Dame, California, Michigan and Arkansas. That’s in no specific order, but those are my favorites right now.”

“I’m open to everyone else really,” said Luke. “I’ll take a look at anyone if they’re interested in me. Of course I’d like to hear more from Texas too, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

“I’m in no rush to make a decision,” Luke explained. “I’m in no rush to commit just right away or anything. I’ll take visits and stuff. I hope to make my decision sometime during the season.”

Not sure if this is free to the public, but surprised that DE/LB Hoza Scott did not make the list. I haven't seen any film in that class so far that stood out more than his. Latest with DE Torrodney Prevot (24/7):

“At this point I’m interested in anyone who is interested in me,” explained Prevot. “If they have offered, I’m interested. You never know what can happen, so you have to remain open.”

“They’re definitely a school I’m still interested in,” he said of Texas. “I’m actually supposed to call the coaches real soon, most likely on Friday, to see what is up.”

“We’re still working on that (an unofficial visit to UT),” Prevot said. “I don’t know when exactly I will check out Texas again. My guess is maybe in the early summer. I thought about visiting next weekend during the state track meet, but that’s not the case now. We’ll have to see. I’m really not sure at this point.”

“That’s not what I’m going to do anymore (commit during the summer),” said Prevot. “With Oregon offering, I want to go up there and check them out. I’m thinking that will be on October 5th. Then we’ll go from there.”

Totally agree. I get the feeling that he was not only offered bacause he was good enough, but that the staff felt he would commit fairly quickly.

Read Inside Texas' take on him and apparently he spent a lot of time with Mack during the second Junior Day. They like him because he's an aggressive, smart player that's not afraid to compete and lead. No telling when he'll make a commitment, but while the focus was still on the 2012 class last season, Collins talked up UT all of the time and how he would love to play with his cousin, DE Cedric Reed. Hope it works out.

Who knows with Prevot. I've been following recruiting closely for about four years now and I don't remember a kid that flip-flops so much with his quotes. He'll tell OrangeBloods he's visiting UT for the state track meet, tells 24/7 he's not. Tells OrangeBloods he has a Top 3, tells 24/7 that's not true. Tells Inside Texas he wants to make a decision after his official visit to Oregon in October, tells 24/7 that's not really the case. Goes on and on, so we'll have to watch what he does rather than go off of what he says. Unfortunately for UT, it's not a good year for DEs in the state and Prevot is elite. Kid holds all of the the cards for now so UT needs to hang in there.

Great news on Davis!

Saw a video on ESPN where Marcell Harris said that he is "probably" going to the summer camp, to "see what's up". When asked about his leaders he mentioned Florida, Texas and the rest. So it looks like a Florida-Texas battle with him.

Quotes from the father of CB Antwuan Davis. Davis' family and high school coach drove to Austin to commit in person:

"We had been talking about it. We talked thoroughly last night with his head coach," said Anthony Davis, Antwuan's father. "It's a great place to be, great atmosphere, the DB coaching is the best as far as technique and we like how they take care of the kids."

"We thought it was time to make the decision. Once we got in that office (Mack's), he was hypnotized. It was basically over after that."

"He had a pretty strong idea of what he wanted to do. He knew where he wanted to go to school the whole time, but he wanted to wait to help his teammates out," said Anthony Davis. "But it was time for him to get out there and do his thing."

"We're very excited. My parents can come down and watch him play. It's an overwhelming feeling for it to happen," Anthony Davis said.

Texas needs to land at least one more of Bell, Collins, Harris, Luke or Smith (Bell is first prize). I'd like to see them take three ultimately. Everyone expected Davis to commit rather soon once he received that UT offer, but I wonder if the offer to Collins yesterday impacted his decision at all and made him feel like he needed to get it done. Excited to see if all of this has caught Smith's attention.

People on campus tend to start crossing streets as soon as the light turns yellow. So when people say the bus ran a red light i'm not sure if it was actually red or he jumped onto the road when it was yellow. Either way, he's on painkillers right now and all over the internet and the news. Likely to be on Tosh.0

Funny you mention buses running red lights because I remember them doing that all of the time when I was at UT. One of the scarier moments of my life happened in front of that Thai restaurant, Madam Mam's, at Guadalupe and Dean Keeton. I always crossed there because I had class in the Communication school. This girl standing in front of me had her iPod on and was oblivious to the world. She decides to cross prematurely and I grab her backpack to pull her back on the sidewalk as the bus goes by in front of us after running a red light. I will never forget her face when she realized what she had done. I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't died up there yet from a similar situation. Too many people jaywalking, riding bikes, etc.

Great photo of Bennie. Dude is making a HUGE difference up there.

Getting Davis in the mix was big for UT. After dominating February they haven't had a commitment in two months. Factor in the drama with Samples, Wilson probably going to Oregon and Prevot/Smith taking their time, it seemed we've been short on good news. A bonus from Davis today...he told 24/7 he was getting Smith on the phone as soon as he got back to Bastrop. We'll see if his commitment changes Smith's tune at all since they're buddies.

My thoughts exactly... Add Priest Willis to th mix and see what happens. Look for Collins to commit very soon!!

Rhodes is a tough guy to figure out because he doesn't talk much, but I'll go with ATH Chevoski Collins for now as the next guy to commit. I agree with rkell. UT being close to home, his family wanting him in Austin and a couple of Texas RBs transferring from Oregon recently are the only things keeping the Horns in the race. He could decide on Texas once it gets down to crunch time but I think he feels Oregon is just a better fit all around for him. Can't say I blame him with their history of utilizing under-sized backs in their offense. Hoping for a nice surprise.

“Yes sir, I'm going to visit (this weekend),” Rhodes said. “I'm going to visit with my family and we're looking forward to it.”

A lot of it has to do with him not paying much attention to the recruiting process. He hasn't been to any big camps/combines that I know of and that's where a lot of these kids get noticed. S Adrian Colbert was similar in that regard. That guy didn't blow up until the end of his senior year.

24/7 reporting this morning that DE/LB Mike Mitchell hooked up with the Texas staff for a phone conversation last week and they let him know they're still very interested. Early on it was looking like Mitchell would likely head out of state but things may be changing since he has a handful of younger brothers and the family would like him to remain close. UT may do themselves a favor by throwing an offer in Mitchell's direction since DE Torrodney Prevot plans on taking his time.

ATH Stanvon Taylor may still be on the radar despite his commitment to OU on Friday. Quotes from him via 24/7:

“I feel like that (Oklahoma) is the school I want as of now,” Taylor told Hookem.com on Sunday. “But if more offers come in, I’ll check them out if I’m interested in them. I just think that, as of right now, with all the offers I have, Oklahoma is the place to be. At the time I had a gut feeling inside about OU and I couldn’t get rid of it this weekend, so I went with it.”

“I’ve always liked Texas,” Taylor said. “If they offered, I’d go check them out. I would want to see how it is and see how I feel about it. I’d look into it and see if it changes my feelings.”

Here are some quotes from a source that spoke with 24/7 recently about the recruitment of S Marcell Harris:

“Texas is making up some serious ground in a hurry,” said the source. “Right now I’d say Florida has a slight edge due to the closeness factor, but I don’t feel comfortable saying there’s no doubt he’s going to Florida now. He has a legitimate interest in Texas and I don’t think most people realize that. Coach Akina has made him think about a lot of things. You look at Texas’ track record with defensive backs and you can see why. Marcell notices that.”

“That unofficial visit he had (to Texas) really impressed his family,” the source explained. “They talked up Texas pretty highly once they were back home. I know for sure they are planning to come again, in June I think. That’s the latest plan anyway.”

“One (defensive back) spot left (at Florida),” the source said. “That’s it for the DB position. There’s a kid that’s local who has an offer out. If he commits first, Florida closes up shop. He may very well do that, too.”

TFloss32
05-07-2012, 10:14 AM
Quotes from Bob Shipley who coached S Kevin Vaccaro at Brownwood (24/7):

“Kevin was just a heck of a player for us over the past few seasons,” said Shipley. “This last year though, we saw a big change in him both mentally and physically. I’d say over the last six months or so, he’s just developed so much physically. He’s much bigger, stronger and faster. That’s credited to his work ethic though. He’s one of the hardest workers there is. I don’t think he’s ever missed a day of practice.”

“There’s no doubt he’s way ahead of where he was as a junior,” explained Coach Shipley. “Like I said, he’s worked really hard on everything. I think what stands out to me the most, is his acceleration and burst. That’s what separates him from others. He may not be the fastest when you’re talking about top end speed, but how quickly he gets to his top speed is amazing. There were many times toward the end of the season where he would make plays I didn’t think he had a chance to make, but he would. I’d be thinking ‘what is he doing’ and he would simply make the play. His skills as a football player are just so far ahead of where they were at the beginning of the season. It surprises a lot of people.”

“He’ll remind you a lot of Kenny,” he said. “He loves to get in there and hit. He loves to play physical football, just like his brother. The only difference is that I don’t think he can be as mean as Kenny. Then again, I don’t think many can. Kevin will crush you on the football field, but Kenny will crush you with a devastating tackle, then take you over to the sideline and body slam you.”

Quotes from CB Antwuan Davis and his coach after his commitment (24/7):

“We had a long talk,” Perry said. “I asked him if he was sure that's what he wanted to do, and he said it was. It caught me by surprise, but he was sure that's what he wanted to do so we did it.”

"My family enjoyed it, my coach enjoyed it, and most of all I enjoyed it,” Davis said. “I knew it would be a great experience.”

“I had laid low and hadn't been answering many questions from coaches because I was getting ready for district and then regionals,” Davis said. “I knew I wanted to go to Texas and I don't have anything left to worry about with state coming up, so I figured why not now? It just seemed like the perfect time to do it.”

“He (Mack Brown) opened the door and told the door to shut and it shut,” Davis said. “He had a magnet behind his back the whole time and tried to trick me, but it was cool. We talked after that for a minute then there was a moment of silence. After that, he asked me if I was ready to do this, and I said, 'Absolutely.'”

“The fact that my parents were most comfortable with it,” Davis said. “They enjoyed it so much. They were proud to be there. I knew I could see myself there, but the fact that they loved it so much put Texas over the top.”

“I didn't even know about Chevoski Collins' offer until (Friday) morning when the coaches told me,” Davis said. “I was on my own time frame the whole time, I guess it just happened that he got offered right now.”

“I'm really looking forward to picking up where I left off last season,” Davis said. “I'm really looking forward to having a great season this year, me and the team.”

“For me to be at UT is a big deal,” Davis said. “For me to be able to perform there before I get to school there is really special.”

Glad to hear Akina made it out to Arizona. If Texas' target number at DB is three (two CBs and one S), then that's a big move knowing that UT is probably going to get a commitment from Collins and Luke has been hinting for a while that he's waiting on the Horns. You meet your quota if you lock up those two guys and that gives you the freedom to pursue Bell and Harris all the way to the end as bonus guys. Win-win, imo. I like the direction Akina is going by creating his own momentum (offering a blue-chipper in Luke) instead of sitting around and waiting on certain guys to window shop. Smith taking his time has kind of put a damper on DB recruiting, but Davis kickstarted it last week and hopefully more positive news is on the way.

Tweets on the new ACC deal. Had a feeling most of them wouldn't be happy:

Corey Clark‏@Corey_Clark
W the difference in 3rd tier TV rights and eventual conf title game -you're looking at an 8 mil gap per yr per team between big 12 and ACC?

YouthSportsSanDiego‏@yssd
FSU needs to catch the first thing smoking out of the ACC now that those contract #'s are out

Nearly $4 million a year looks good but giving up title game sponsorship rights and adding 4 more years to the contract is a lot to give up

Rob Mc.‏@RobMcCannell
Make no mistake I prefer ACC effectively managing assets & letting schools maximize matketability over going B12. Not seeing that though.

Ingram Smith‏@IngramSmith
New TV deal is nice, but modest increase in revenue, IMO ACC will have offer "eat what you kill" model to try to keep FSU, CU, Va Tech

Andrew Carter‏@_andrewcarter
Extension announced today is for 16 years and worth $3.6 billion. Goes into effect on July 1. Means about $17 million per school per year.

Andrew Carter‏@_andrewcarter
Overall, ACC member schools will make $60 million more (compared to old deal) over duration of contract. About $4 mill more per year.

Andrew Carter‏@_andrewcarter
For ACC fans upset with new deal, blame failures of FSU, Clemson, VT, etc., etc. to compete consistently on national stage. More wins=more $

Ingram Smith‏@IngramSmith
Final thought on New ACC deal. Friday night is for high schools, big east and Boise State. Major brands dont play on Friday night ...

TomahawkNation.com‏@TomahawkNation
It is actually $16M per year not 17 because the ACC office takes a cut equal to that of one team I believe

This is a good breakdown from OrangeBloods on Florida State's current situation and why there are several reasons for exploring other conference options:

The Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN today announced a new media rights package that will elevate the per school payout for television and digital revenue tied to football and basketball to roughly $17 million, up from the roughly $13 million per school previously.

The contract includes football-only third tier rights revenue. And that’s where the future of Florida State in the ACC and whether it would ever seriously consider jumping to the Big 12 could take on a life of its own.

The Seminoles are in one of the few states - with a population of 19 million - in which a university could turn its third-tier rights into the school’s own television network the way Texas has done in the Lone Star State (population 25.6 million).

TOO GOOD TO PASS UP?: One industry source said if Texas can command $300 million over 20 years - $15 million per year in additional TV revenue - for its own network, Florida State should be able to command at least a third that much ($5 million), if not more, in a state with so many television sets and a passion for FSU sports.

So before everyone dismisses Florida State ever taking a serious look at jumping from the ACC into the Big 12, consider that.

Now, with the contract between the ACC and ESPN being announced today, the decision of Florida State to stay or go from its current conference home becomes accelerated. Florida State officials could come out at any moment and say, definitively, the Seminoles are not leaving the ACC.

And then the latest five-alarm rumor involving potential realignment/expansion in college athletics would be hosed off.

MONEY IS AN ISSUE AT FSU: But to determine if Florida State to the Big 12 makes any sense or no sense, you have to look at the current landscape.

I’ve seen where Florida State is so committed to academics in the ACC, it would never leave a conference that averages a ranking of 43 in the 2012 U.S. News and World Report rankings of American colleges and universities.

But let me tell you what has the power to make boards of trustees at universities get away from what many would consider logical thinking: money.

And at Florida State right now, money is a problem.

Warchant.com, the Florida State site on the Yahoo/Rivals network, reported May 4 that Florida State is facing an athletics department shortfall of $2.4 million for the 2012-13 academic year.

And that’s coming on the heels of back-to-back nine-win seasons for football that included two sold out bowl games. Men’s basketball followed a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011 with an ACC Championship in 2012. And baseball has hosted back-to-back NCAA Regionals.

RENOVATIONS NEEDED: Combine this success on the field with the fact Florida State’s basketball arena and football stadium are in desperate need of renovation, and the Seminoles are probably taking a hard look at the ability to launch their own TV network in the Big 12.

Even with the new money from the ACC-ESPN contract, expected to provide an additional $4 million per year in revenue, Florida State is going to be hard-pressed to raise the kind of money needed for a major facility upgrade.

And while there’s some excitement that the recent success in Florida State sports will help spur a fund-raising drive, there is frustration in the fan base about a five-game home schedule this year against Savannah State, Murray State, Wake Forest, Duke and Boston College.

And with only Florida State, Virginia Tech and Clemson finishing in the Top 25, that schedule doesn’t figure to get much better.

CUTTING BACK: Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman told Warchant.com the answer will be to “cut back our budget next year pretty dramatically.” Warchant.com reported the number to cut is $2 million on top of the nearly $500,000 taken out of last year’s operating budget.

Could money end up being a driving force as Florida State decides whether to remain in the ACC?

After having conversations with people dialed into the administration at Florida State, there appears to be a sense that the board of trustees at FSU might be willing to explore all options.

A message left for board of trustees chairman Andrew Haggard at his law firm on Wednesday wasn’t immediately returned.

DISGRUNTLED FSU FANS: There is no doubt there is a growing sentiment in the Florida State fan base that a conference move to the Big 12 might be worth exploring. Many FSU fans have expressed their discontent on message boards and in social media.

They complain about the perception that ACC commissioner John Swofford, the former athletic director at North Carolina, caters to UNC basketball coach Roy Williams and Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
They complain about the ACC adding Syracuse and Pittsburgh - two schools that have been more prominent in basketball than football for some time.

They complain about the ACC football officiating, including calls in last season’s 35-30 loss at Clemson that many Noles’ fans felt cost FSU a shot at the ACC title.

But those are fans and message boards right? Fans don’t matter in these equations right?

Wrong.

FANS MATTER: Ask Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne about reading the sentiment of the fan base and lining up on the right or wrong side of that sentiment. Byrne initially voiced support for staying in the Big 12 when a fan movement helped persuaded A&M’s board of regents to vote for a move to the Southeastern Conference.

Same for Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton, who was actively trying to save the Big 12 as the head of the Big 12 board of directors, when his own regents board advised Deaton to recuse himself from the post because the regents were ready to go in a different direction.

Again, Florida State could come out later today or tomorrow and say a move from the ACC to the Big 12 is utterly preposterous. But until that happens, there is reason to pay attention.

The ego stroke Florida State would get launching its own network in the Sunshine State because of its third-tier rights capability in the Big 12 would give the Seminoles something the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes could not match.

COMPETING WITH GATORS: Florida is barred from having its own network in the SEC. Miami doesn’t have the audience. If the financial models for a network come back favorable for FSU, the Seminoles could compare a $17 million payout in the ACC to a $19 million annual payout in the Big 12 and probably stack at least $5 million per year on top from its own network.

Suddenly, Florida State would be able to generate TV revenue on par with the Gators, who could earn upwards of $20 million per year once the SEC adjusts its TV deals with Texas A&M and Missouri included. And FSU would have a recruiting tool the Gators couldn’t match. And if Texas is any indication, some of the money from an independent network can be paid back to the university for academics.

Texas has pledged $5 million per year from the Longhorn Network back to academics for the first five years of its independent deal with ESPN. And for all the jokes about the Longhorn Network still not receiving wide distribution, that’s an ESPN problem, not Texas’. ESPN’s checks to the Longhorns are not bouncing.

FSU HAS A PRODUCT TO SELL: In order to launch a TV network, you have to have inventory. You have to have strong football, so you can create a ton of shoulder programming. You have to be relevant in basketball and baseball, a check mark for FSU.

The Olympic and non-revenue sports have to be strong, and FSU can boast that as well as evidenced by its Top 10 finish in the Director’s Cup the last two years.

Another common argument against Florida State joining the Big 12 is that it wouldn’t be politically strong enough to sit at the table with Texas and Oklahoma. If you have your own television network in the state of Florida, you just got a seat at the grownups’ table.

And then you have to consider where the Big 12 would be on expansion. And if you were listening carefully when new Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby was introduced and was asked about expansion, he didn’t talk about “a geographic footprint” the way interim commissioner Chuck Neinas did.

Bowlsby talked about an “electronic footprint.” Totally different.

BOWLSBY'S LEGACY: And credit Neinas for getting the Big 12 to agree to a 13-year granting of TV rights back to the conference as part of the league’s revised, 13-year, Tier 1 rights deal with ABC-ESPN, which should be finalized shortly. That will keep schools from being able to leave the Big 12 with their TV rights, effectively barring such a defection.

What does that leave for Bob Bowlsby’s legacy? With the Big 12’s TV deals essentially done and a 13-year granting of rights bonding the current 10 members in the league for that length of time, does Bowlsby look at expansion as his legacy?

For weeks and months, I had been told the Big 12 was good with 10 schools. Nine conference football games. Home-and-home in basketball league games. Good. No need for a Big 12 championship football game because it would only risk knocking a possible undefeated or one-loss team out of a national title shot with an upset.

But last week I talked to some people who said, “Well, if it’s the right two.” And that was different from what I had heard before.

I was also told that studies had been done looking at what value might be added if any of the original members of the Big East (Louisville, Cincinnati, etc.) would bring to the Big 12, and that report did not come back favorably, sources said.

That leaves some interesting candidates who could probably benefit from having the ability to launch their own network. The most likely to benefit from such an opportunity would be Notre Dame and Florida State.

The Big 12 has repeatedly indicated to Notre Dame it could bring its non-football sports to the Big 12 and keep football as independent, allowing the Irish to keep their football contract with NBC while launching a Tier 3 network.

So far, Notre Dame has indicated it’s just fine. We’ll see if Florida State does the same.

As far as a decison goes (there have been rumors he would commit to A&M this spring), he says he plans on taking his time with the process beginning with attending several summer camps. He plans on being at Texas' underclassmen camp in June. He also mentioned that A&M is the slight leader right now because it's the only campus he's visited so far.

From what I have read the revenue increases 2mil per team added. So with 2 more teams the total revenue for each team would be 24 mil per season. I will try and find the article to back this up but that is a huge difference for teams like FSU.

The 2014 class will be interesting because many (if not most) of the elite Texas prospects are showing little to no love for the Horns at this point. The staff definitely has work cut out for them, unlike most years when lots of the top guys are practically locks from the start.

Glad that Major has the lead on his recruitment...here's a blurb I got from an SEC recruiting board...

It’s been a big week for La Porte (Texas) LB/DE Hoza Scott with the class of 2014 standout landing offers from Alabama and LSU in a matter of hours. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder’s offer from the Crimson Tide came in first and was delivered over the phone by head coach Nick Saban.

“Alabama told me that they were going to offer me a scholarship and my reaction was like, ‘wow the number one team in the nation is offering me a scholarship this early’,” said Scott. “Coach (Burton) Burns came by the school and I talked to Nick Saban. He’s a real cool coach to talk to and is easy to get along with it seems like. He really wants me to get out there this summer. I’m planning on (visiting Alabama).”

LSU came by La Porte shortly thereafter and wasted no time throwing their hat in the ring for the Lonestar defender.

“Coach (Thomas) McGaughey came to the school and said that he was going offer me a scholarship and how I’m a great football player. That offer was exciting, too.”

Alabama and LSU join new SEC West foe Texas A&M in the fight for the Houston area prospect, who grew up cheering for the Aggies despite his brothers Yusuf and Gainus playing their college ball at Arizona.

“I like that A&M has nice facilities- they have a nice workout room and they’re building another new one. I like the environment- it’s real nice and the people that are there are real nice and cool. I grew up cheering for A&M mostly, really.”

Scott has an early top group and says he hopes to have a decision soon after his junior season.

“I have a top six- Alabama, A&M, UT (Texas), LSU, California, and Florida. They’re all coming at me pretty hard. I might do it early to get all the stuff out of the way so I can just focus on football. It will probably be right after football next year.”

The future four-star prospect hopes to take visits to the four out-of-state programs that sit in his top six.

“I’m trying to go to Florida. My brother, Gainus, lives out there, so I could easily go there. I’m trying to go to California, but that might be hard. I’m also trying to go to LSU and Alabama. I’m looking to see if their graduation rate is, if their work ethic is good, and if they have one goal to be the best team in college.”

That sounds accurate and the their athletic department just announced a $2.4 million budget shortfall. Their fans are already making moves. A campaign for realignment is being started by the Florida State Rivals site, Warchant.com. It's launching to Facebook soon and apparently a Twitter campaign will follow. Here's the excerpt from the site:

There is obviously a lot of discussion among our fan base in favor of FSU leaving the ACC, or at least exploring our options. However, sitting around on a message board and complaining about it doesn't get the job done. If you want to effect change, you have to affect the minds of the decision makers. If you will think back to a year or so ago, the decision makers at both Texas A&M and Missouri did not want to leave the Big 12. The reason they both ended up leaving the Big 12 is because of outcry from fans and alumni to change their position. Who are the decision makers you might ask? Here is where you can start:

Eric Barron, University President: [email protected] (850) 644-1085

Andy Haggard, Chairman of the Board of Trustees: [email protected] 305-446-5700

Susie Busch-Transou, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-539-2565

Allen Bense, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-769-3477

Ed Burr, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 904-998-8841

Dr. Joe Camps, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-309-0400

Emily Fleming Duda, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 407-365-6336

Joe Gruters, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 941-747?0500

Mark Hillis, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-524-2035

James Kinsey, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 239-939-1367 ext. 200

Sandra Lewis, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-644-8409

Peggy Rolando, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 305-379-9144

Brent Sembler, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 727-544-4244

Rueben Stokes, Board of Trustees: [email protected] 850-644-1811

Randy Spetman, FSU AD: [email protected] (850) 644-1079

Those are your main decision makers at the university folks.

If you want to see FSU in a new conference, you must change the minds of the decision makers. That means you need to email and call all of them and express your opinion. Do so respectfully. Let them know that you support FSU and want what is best for it. Do not threaten to withhold money from the university if we do not switch conferences, but if you do give money to the university, let them know. Oh and it can't stop with just you. You must email and call everyone of your friends who are Noles and convince them to do the same. Use social media, whether it be Facebook or Twitter and let the world know how you feel about what FSU is doing and where we should do.

I am not personally advocating staying in the ACC or leaving at this point. However, I know there are many of you who feel passionately on this subject. If you feel passionately about this subject, you have the ability to effect real change at your university. Don't just sit around and talk about it on Warchant, but empower your fellow Noles and the decision makers who matter to understand your point of view. That doesn't mean you will necessarily get your way. However, if you want change to happen, you need to step up and take charge. ~ DemocraticNole

Quotes from 2014 DE Hoza Scott:

"It gives me motivation to keep trying and trying. That was one of my goals. To become one of the best players in the state of Texas, and I've accomplished it," Scott said. "It really shocked me (being named the #1 player for 2014) and in my mind I said if I keep on going and going and I'll be successful."

"I have a top seven. I have A&M, Alabama, LSU, California, Florida, and UCLA, and UT," Scott said. "I fit in those kind of places. They're just nice campuses. Everything just seems nice. Those are the colleges I want to go and visit. I visited A&M and it was real nice and I felt like I would fit in there and everything. Everyone was nice to me and all that. I think if I went to other colleges I would like them too but I have to see first."

"No, not really (A&M being the clear leader)," he said on the subject. "A&M is kind of a little bit because that's the only one I've been to so that's why it's like that right now."

"He's real cool (Major Applewhite)," Scott said. "He asked me what kind of music I listen to and he wants to meet my family when my family goes there to meet him. He's a real cool coach. I think I get along with him real well."

Quotes from the father of RB Dontre Wilson (24/7):

"That was taken out of context or misunderstood," Wilson said. "Tre (Dontre) was talking about the offenses in terms of how they fit him. Most can see that Oregon and Ohio State are a little bit ahead in terms of Texas. But at the end of the day, Tre hasn't even visited Ohio State. They have a ton of ground to make up on Oregon and Texas."

"We aren't talking about football right now as much as people probably think," he said. "Tomorrow is a big day and we take track very seriously, probably more serious than a lot of other people do."

"Like I said before, Tre hasn't even visited Ohio State, he's not going to commit to a school he's never seen. Urban Meyer is coming really hard but they still have a lot of ground to make up. We will talk about it as a family after track is over this weekend. Right now I think he's pretty likely to go ahead and make his commitment as planned."

Latest with RB Daje Johnson (24/7):

"I’ve been working out with my trainer, Jimel Cofer, every day,” said Johnson. “He’s a former player who played for Michigan State, so he has a good grasp on what to do. I’ve been pushing myself hard every single day, working with him. We train hard. He has Bennie’s workouts and he’s incorporated those with his as well. It’s really paid off. I feel like I’ve gotten bigger, which is the main thing I’ve wanted to do. I also feel like I’ve gotten faster and have been doing a lot of speed training.”

“I just felt it would be in my best interest to not run track for my school,” Johnson explained. “I work out every single day. I’m just trying to focus on being the best for football. Don’t get me wrong, track workouts are good, but football is more important to me. Actually, the work outs that I do have track workouts in them, but they prepare you more for football and having better football speed, rather than just running on a track. So to me, it makes more sense for me to do that.”

“I am really looking forward to it,” he told Hookem.com. “We are supposed to report on June 4th and, to be honest, it can’t get here quick enough. I’m ready to grind on the field every single day. I’ve already set goals for myself and plan to hit them all the first year. I want to see the field immediately, from the start, and plan to do just that. I’m going to work hard to do my part to get the Horns back to where they belong.”

“I’m going to be doing everything it sounds like,” Johnson said. “I’ll be like a regular running back, a utility back, lining up all over the backfield, lining up in the slot, playing wideout and just rotating through all of those. I’ll also be on kickoff returns it sounds like, which is right up my alley. They just want me to get in open space, because they know that’s where I’m the most dangerous. I’m ready to get some of those screen passes, hitch passes or a go route to get me out there. I know I can do some damage once that happens. I’ll have a chance to show off my speed.”

“They want to try me there (in the Wildcat),” Johnson said while laughing. “I’ve actually run it some throughout high school, but for the most part I’d just get the ball and run. I never passed, even though I wanted to. I guess my coach didn’t trust me putting the ball in the air! I can throw though and can put it deep. I’m going to give it a shot for sure and am looking forward to it.”

2013 DE Daeshon Hall Wavering on Texas?

The athletic DE from Lancaster committed to the Longhorns in late February after a whirlwind recruitment, but has since made visits to Baylor's pro day and had an unofficial visit to Texas A&M. Hall may have been accompanying teammates and it's not clear what his intentions were, but where there are smokescreens, there may be fire. Mack Brown has not tolerated recruits making visits - unofficial or otherwise - while committed to Texas, but a thin year at DE in-state and an inability to grab a commitment from Alief's Torrodney Prevot , may be granting us a tolerance borne of necessity.

"Mack Brown called my coach. My coach had told me that we needed to call him and he wanted to speak with me. So we called him on Wednesday morning. He basically said he saw my film and he liked what they saw on they were offering."

"I don't want to say it's guaranteed, but I'd say it's about 90 percent that I'll go to one of their camps," Robinson said. "Either my head coach or one of my assistants would bring me up."

"They're definitely in my top three, along with Alabama and LSU," Robinson said.

“My decision, I’m going to make it after football season next year,” Scott said. “That way after that I can just focus on football and not worry.”

Like BevoBoom posted above, Rhodes isn't expected to pull the trigger this weekend. FSU Board Chairman blasts new ACC deal and says the response from the fanbase has been overwhelmingly negative:

"It's mind-boggling and shocking," said Haggard. "How can the ACC give up third tier rights for football but keep them for basketball?"

"It continues the perception that the ACC favors the North Carolina schools," noted Haggard.

"How do you not look into that option," asked Haggard. "On behalf of the Board of Trustees I can say that unanimously we would be in favor of seeing what the Big 12 might have to offer. We have to do what is in Florida State's best interest."

"With the SEC making the kind of money it does it's time to act," said Haggard. "You can't sit back and be content in the ACC. This is a different time financially. This isn't 10-15 years ago when money was rolling in."

"No FSU graduate puts on his resume or interviews for a job saying they are in the same conference as Duke and Virginia," he said. "Conference affiliation really has no impact on academics."

The reality was bad, however. The initial bump in television revenue is actually just over $1 million a year, sources said, and a total in the $12 million range next season. The deal is back loaded so the bigger money comes in escalator provisions that, considering how broadcast rights keep growing, probably will be below market by the time any sizeable gains are realized.
That additional $4 million per school, per year? That won't come until 2021, nine years in, sources said.
Privately, almost everyone was troubled by the deal.

Latest with ATH Kendall Sanders:

"It's wonderful to be here (at the state track meet) because I really didn't put in the work to be able to come here," Sanders said. "So I just felt blessed to be able to come here and be in the top 9 … actually the top 4. I just love that I was able to come up here and compete."

"I really didn't worry about track this year. I was focused about football. I'm getting ready to come into Texas and play football," Sanders said. "They're going to start me out on offense first. I'm coming in positive. I like offense. I want to play receiver. So I'm coming in trying to soak in everything from Jaxon Shipley, Mike Davis and all the great receivers there and just learn the receiver position and try to master it and get out there on the field."

"You just have to stay on it (with Wylie's workout)," he said. "They're long workouts and they burn because when we get up there you do it with speed. You can't just do one and then take a 20 minute break and then do another one. You have to continue to do it."

"I'm ready for it. I've been trying to train my body for it and my mind," he said.

"We're (Sanders and Dalton Santos) pushing each other every day at APEX," Sanders said. "He gets me sometimes on the weights but sometimes he gets tired and I push him and I can get him. I get him in the speed workouts. I take pride in that part because he's fast to be that big. We have a great time working out."

"When they first offered me I was really excited and like, 'I have to go to Texas,'" Sanders said. "Then I started thinking about it and I was like, 'Which one is for me?' That's when I went to my family because I didn't do it before (on the Oklahoma State commitment) and I wasn't happy with the decision. So I went to my family and we prayed about it and we came out with Texas. I just felt good about Texas."

"Three weeks, I'm counting them down," he said. "I'm ready."

“The Longhorns are definitely a team I like,” he told Hookem.com. “Texas is the school in our state. They’re the big, key school. Everyone wants to play for Texas. Getting out there and playing with kids from your state and representing your state is awesome.”

“Texas has recently stopped by to see me,” said Mitchell. “It was actually the wide receivers coach, Coach (Darrell) Wyatt. What he basically said, was that Texas was still in the evaluation process. They’re looking at a few different players at different positions, so I’m just sitting and waiting to see what they are going to do.”

“I actually had a chance to visit a while back,” said Mitchell. “They invited me down for their junior day, so I attended that. It was a great time and I had a lot of fun. The whole visit was awesome. I really liked the facilities and the stadium was awesome too.”

“I really like Coach (Manny) Diaz,” Mitchell said. “He’s just an awesome coach and great guy. My dad and I had a chance to sit down with him to talk for a while when we were down there. He’s a very knowledgeable coach who knows what he’s doing when it comes to my position and running the entire defense. He is someone who I could see myself playing for.”

“If Texas did offer,” explained Mitchell, “then that would put them right in the thick of things for me. They would shoot up the list for sure. Like I said, I like Texas. They’re a great school. So for them to offer would definitely be a big deal for me.”

“There’s a few other schools I really like as well,” explained Mitchell. “As for in-state, I like TCU, Baylor and Texas A&M. Other ones that are out of state are Oregon, Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. I have some visits set up this summer. I’m going to hit up plenty of the schools around the state of Texas, so that may change as far as favorites go. I am keeping my options open right now though.”

"He (UT Track coach, Bubba Thornton) just put it in my head that if this was the place for me, I should just do it (commit to Texas) now. I slept on it that night and knew this was what I wanted and he was right," Colbert said.

"I have fond memories (of committing to UT). Vivid memories actually. I can tell you everything about it," Colbert said. "We were in his (Mack's) office, his wife was in there as well with my whole family. Him and his wife were playing with my baby brother. Then we were just talking and I told him I was ready, I was ready to change my commitment to Texas. My parents and my family all loved it."

"I'm ready for that (football workouts). That's been on my mind a lot lately," Colbert said. "It's been purely track lately. I'll start working on footwork, getting back in the weight room, just getting out on the field and working, getting ready to go to Texas."

"It's just a natural feel for it. When I first came to town (for the state track meet), I was actually asleep. It woke me up. I just felt this feeling that I was there. It just gives me a great feeling in my heart. I'm home," Colbert said.

"The coaches haven't really told me anything about playing time. They just expect me to come in and work hard, maybe I'll get that shot. That's what I'm looking forward to," Colbert said. "Wherever they need me, that's where I'll be."

"I'm very physical, very physical when I'm on the field. People just haven't seen that yet," Colbert said. "I'll show them. When I put the pads on and bring the speed to you, it's going to hurt."

“I'm still committed to Texas,” Hall said. “I'm just committed to Texas. That's it.”

“The coaches told me to communicate with them if I wanted to go somewhere,” Hall said. “It's just one of those deals. I'm happy with my commitment.”

“It's pretty tough,” Hall said of having schools trying to get him to change his mind. “But if you know what you want you can handle it. Texas is a great place to be.”

“Coach Giles has treated me like family,” Hall said. “Coach Chambers, too.”

“The best part is the all attention you get and when you walk down the street people know who you are,” Hall said. “The worst part is the stories that get out about you that are false.”

“That's just a rumor (about moving home to Washington),” Hall said. “I'm just playing AAU basketball there, but I'm coming back. I'll be back in the fall.”

“I'm looking forward to just working with Coach Giles and seeing how we work together,” Hall said.

From Baylor 24/7 on Big XII additions:

------------------------
About three weeks ago, one of my sources on conference realignment called. I thought he was just calling to catch up and say "hello."

I was wrong.

The BCS meetings regarding a college football playoff at the FBS level were approaching, and he told me to watch carefully what came out of those meetings.

Soon after the ACC schools received their new ESPN contract - which averaged $17 million per school, per year over 15 years - the news leaked of a Big 12 contract for the top two tiers in the range of $20 million apiece. That meant two tiers of the Big 12 was valued at $3 million more than all three tiers of ACC programming.

At that time, at least 10 universities started a market research study on the value of their tier three rights, which remain in possession by Big 12 schools after equally distributing the top two tiers.

Louisville, Pitt, Miami, Florida State, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, and BYU all received their studies and went to media outlets to gauge the monetary value.

Notre Dame would receive the largest amount, followed by Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech. The others were all told that their rights were valued in the $4 million range.

Last Thursday, intermediaries from several schools reached out to decision makers to start conversations about possibly moving to the Big 12.

On Saturday, the Chairman of Florida State's Board of Trustees blasted the ACC contract - especially in terms of the institutions where football was more of a focus than basetball.

Another detail that came to light was that the new ACC contract was backloaded - with members not receiving the $17 million until 2021. The Big 12 deal had a greater rate of acceleration, with schools receiving the $20 million by 2015 - when the rumored ESPN contract would go into effect.

As of today, the ESPN Big 12 contract has not been signed. Escalator clauses in the contract for getting back to 12 teams will raise the contract northward of $25 million per team. The media contracts for the Big 12 will reopen for negotiation if the league expands past 12 teams.

At this time, the Big 12 powers are happy with the thought of 12 teams and a new conference championship game. However, a few of the league's major players would like the contract to reopen for possibly more money by going to 14 teams.

With 14 teams, expected payouts would be approximately $28 million per school, with another $2 million or so per team coming from a conference championship game. And remember, the schools also have their tier 3 rights - unlike the ACC.

Florida State and Clemson coaches have been told a possible move to the Big 12 was under way, and to be ready for this on the road recruiting.

Secondly, our sources also state a Big 12 Tier 3 Network for the schools without the pull of a Texas or OU could form and would likely mean an additional $4 million to $6 million for those institutions. This would ensure constant programming for either Fox Sports or ESPN to show in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and other conference markets. Adding two ACC schools would further the reach of this network.

Originally Texas and OU were wanting to remain at 10 schools in the conference, but they began to consider expansion when the tier 3 studies were done by the other schools. The ability of the Big 12 to attract national brands such as Florida State and Clemson raised the bar a bit for a conference long-since stabilized by a 13-year grant of rights by its members.

The next obstacle is finding the right teams to add - and how many. There are several suitors for the additional two or four seats. The issue remains which schools could increase the current contract to the maximum projected $28 million.

Our sources have told us decisions could be made by May 30, when the Big 12 has its annual membership meeting.

All situations can change. However, according to people we trust, if Clemson and Florida State inform the ACC of their decision to leave - and the schools complete the application process for Big 12 membership - then discussions could take place at the May meeting.

It is unclear if the power brokers in the conference would rubber-stamp the applications, or if a school like Texas or Oklahoma would balk at FSU and Clemson being the first two added to the conference ranks.

Alabama is the latest to offer 2014 OL Demetrius Knox of Fort Worth All Saints. He's also been invited to the Rivals Five-Star Challenge later this summer. He will be at the top of Texas' board (have to fight off Ohio State) along with 2014 OL Cameron Robinson of Monroe, LA.

"They're all great," Knox said of the early offers. "Alabama, being the No.1 team in the nation, for the head coach just to call me up in my coach's office and talk to me one on one, say how much he likes my game, and I'm only a sophomore, , that's just crazy."

"That's a great opportunity (to attend the Rivals Five-Star Challenge). Only about 20 people in my grade get to do it. I'm not taking that for granted," Knox said. "I'm going to come out and show everybody that I'm supposed to be there, that I belong."

"I've talked to them (the UT staff) about Texas and how much they're interested in me," Knox said. "I know pretty much a lot about Texas. What stands out is basically almost the same thing that stands out about Alabama. Everything there is grade A. It's the best, They're good at getting you ready for next level in the NFL. And if that doesn't work out, they have so many alumni there that can help you with jobs and things."

"It's going to change a lot. But I like Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, UCLA, Florida and Oregon," Knox said. "I've been researching a bit. I really and truly want to major in either English or computer engineering. Academics are very important to me. And all those schools have a great team environment, how they gel with each other. They're not selfish at all about their team."

"The things I think I do well, if you see me in practice or in a game, one thing you can see is that I never give up, never quit. I go until the ref blows that whistle. I'm in your face trying to push you to the ground. If you hit the ground, I'm on to the next guy. Sometimes I'm on camera more than the running backs. I'm aggressive and I like hitting you," Knox said. "I still have to get better with my upper body strength. I want to get my bench up past my weight. I think my lower body is pretty solid right now."

A&M commit Ishmael Wilson just picked up coveted offer from LSU.

How long before he switches?

We might not know when exactly, but with his love for LSU and A&M's reputation of decommits... we can almost call it inevitable.

We lost Addison and Thompson last year after losing our head coach. Replaced Addison with Thomas Johnson - you know, the one that was committed to Texas. I'm not worried at all.

Hassan Ridgeway gave same 'my word is solid as oak' spiel as Ishmael Wilson while almost committing to A&M on the side. They have to give that response unless they are ready to switch that instant. Wilson is a flight risk.

Getting TJ was huge for Ags. The Texas coaches really pissed him off switching Marcus Johnson and A&M wisely came hard after him at ideal time. I think he'll be early impact guy.

Sumlin is a hell of a recruiter and A&M is cleaning up. But realize you'll have some decommits. Bama and LSU are now going after Texas recruits with a vengence and if they blow you guys out - expect them to go after your blue chips. If Bama/LSU beats you by over 3 touchdowns and you don't even win 2 SEC games next year, Sumlin will have so tough work keeping everybody on board.

As a refresher the Ags had 18 guys committed in 2012 class that ended up signing elsewhere or having grade issues. Not sure where number of two came from.

Trevor Knight - (OU)
Marcus Johnson - (Texas)
Jevele Edwards
Davante Bourque - (Tennessee)
Lorenzo Phillips - (LSU)
Eric Davis - (Ok St.)
Colin Blake - (FSU)
Corey Thompson - (LSU)
Bralon Addison - (Oregon)
Darion Monroe - (Tulane)
Michael Wilson - (Ok St.)
Jaevon Richardson -
Marion Grice -
Logan David - grades
Dennis Smith - cut his knees off
Trent Momon - grades
Adrian Bellard -grades
Troy Green - pulled when Brenham strategy failed

Quotes from JUCO DE Marcus Hardison:

"It was Tuesday (of last week). I was talking to Texas A&M. My defensive line coach came in after A&M left and told me Texas was supposed to come down," Hardison said. "My coach and coach Davis are good friends. Coach Davis is supposed to call me and I think they're supposed to come down to Florida to see me."

"A couple schools have done that already, go to my high school. My coach from my high school tells me to come up there when they're coming but I'm always up there at the school lifting weights anyway. If they're coming to the high school, they'll usually tell me before so I'll make sure to be there."

"That's my favorite school, the first college team I ever liked. I think I flicked on a bowl game, it was Vince Young and Texas against Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Ever since then, I just liked Texas overall," Hardison said. "My grandmother put me on to Texas, bought me a Texas Longhorn shirt."

"I'm quick off the line, very quick off the line. I'm good in the open field. This spring that just passed, I got a lot better on my footwork and with my hands," Hardison said. "And I got better with my strength too. I have a lot to learn but think I'm very quick off the line.

"A lot of coaches want me to play inside our outside. A&M said they'd put me at D-end, but when they go to a different scheme I'd go inside. At my school now, I play regular defensive end, then when we switch to a fast d-line and the d-ends go in, I'll go inside. I can do both, but I like playing defensive end because I've gotten better at it and would like to stay at it."

"Coach (Mack) Brown, I really have much respect for him. The meeting gave us some clarity. Some people say one thing, but when you get to meet a person, it's like you've known him you're whole life," Mrs. Rhodes said. "Me, Robbie, my brother that was with me, his wife - we all really enjoyed it."

"I can't make the decision for him. But any coach that he plays for, I feel me and my husband are doing a great job, now we need someone to kick in his other growth."

"To be honest with you, it was awesome," Mrs. Rhodes said. "When the coaches started telling Robbie about stuff, you could tell they searched Robbie all over. They knew he had never been in trouble. They told him he better be on time for school. It was like what a mom and dad would say, but they're not kin to Robbie. That really hit home. Mack Brown is awesome. I haven't nothing bad to say about him or the visit."

Excellent quotes from 2014 OL Demetrius Knox who was thought to be favoring Ohio State. 24/7 already has him ranked as a Top 30 guy for his class, so that gives you an idea of how hard Texas will go after him. Based on Mack's policy of not offering sophomores, it's good to see that Searels has already "unofficially" offered two of the best OLs in the nation for next year.

"(Coach Searels) said he loved the way I play. He said that he thinks I'm one of the best players he's ever seen," Knox said. "He invited me to one of their camps, in the early part of June."

"Texas really doesn't offer sophomores until the early part of June or even in February, but as of right now, I have an unofficial offer."

"I've grown up in Ohio all my life. It always was that big offer that I wanted to get. When I got it, I was excited, thought it was a game-changer. I thought I was about to commit right then and there," Knox said. "But I did some more research and talked to my family and I don't think Ohio State will really factor into it."

Latest with DB Maurice Smith:

“It’s still what it is. It’s still my dream school,” Smith said. “Antwuan (Davis) has committed (to Texas). I’m not saying it’s going to change my mind or anything because I’m going to stick to my plan (to wait to decide). But that’s just another thing I have to really think about. I’ve been wanting to play with him and that would be my opportunity.”

“After the junior day and the spring game we’ve built a relationship,” he said. “We don’t just talk about coaching, we talk about our families and how things are going. We’ve built a bond of families too.”

“This is a lifelong decision I’m going to be making and it’s also going to be mine,” Smith said. “I never thought I would be in this position so I’m trying to take every angle and take advantage of this as much as I can. Once I see some of the schools are not what I’m looking for I will take them off the list.”

“Those guys like Reggie (Chevis), Torrodney (Prevot), and a couple of more we always talk about sticking together and trying to get the same college offers,” Smith said. “Another thing is even though we’ve talked about playing with each other you still have to think about what’s best for you because you’re the one who has to live with it.”

More great quotes from JUCO DE Marcus Hardison (24/7):

“Coach (Bo) Davis actually got in touch with my coach recently,” said Hardison. “He told my coach that the Longhorns are really interested in me and they’ve liked what they have seen on film. I haven’t had a chance to speak to him yet personally, but I’m sure it will happen soon. They’re supposed to call soon and evaluate me some more as well, so I’ll get my chance to talk to them.”

“They’re my favorite school,” Hardison told Hookem.com. “They’re my top school. I love Texas. They’re easily my number one.”

“My grandma,” he explained. “I know that sounds funny, but that’s how. I’m originally from Louisiana, but my grandma stayed in Austin. She brought me a gift and, when I opened it, it was a Longhorn jacket. I rocked it all the time. Ever since then, I’ve been a Longhorn fan. My family loves LSU. Not me. I’m all Texas. I’ve been rooting for them since Vince Young put on a show at the Rose Bowl. That’s my team.”

“That defense is amazing,” said Hardison. “I love it. It’s real impressive. All of those various packages, the different looks and all that is really fun stuff. I’m just real impressed by it. I know they’ve had their ups and downs the past two seasons, but that defense will be one of the main reasons they’ll be back next year. I expect them to have a big year.”

“If Texas offered,” Hardison said, “I’d probably commit in a heartbeat. That would be a dream come true for me. I’d love to play for them and play in that defense. I really hope it all works out. I’m counting on it.”

Comments on Robbie Rhodes from 247 after Under Armour 7-on-7 32-team tourney.

---------------

Simply put, Rhodes was the most talented prospect on hand Saturday, and by a wide margin. The 6-foot-1, 189-pound wide receiver is full of explosive speed and quickness with elite ball skills. His ability to instantly get off the line of scrimmage and into routes is among the best in the country and his ability to sink the hips and create separation in and out of breaks is elite. He made a number of highlight reel grabs during the event, and makes playing the position look smooth, effortless and easy.

Rhodes, who won the 4A state 200-meters with a time of 21.06 into a breeze, also displayed the competitive fire and fight for the ball in the air that the best receivers possess. Baylor is considered by many to be the favorite with Texas working to make up ground.

Rhodes had 394 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in a single game as a junior, and is currently the No. 75 ranked prospect in the country. Look for his rise in the class of 2013 to continue.

Less confident on this one for right now because I read that Art Briles is personally handling his recruitment for Baylor and they're pushing the future Kendall Wright role on him pretty hard. You also have his high school coach telling him he needs to go to a school where they throw a lot so that's not helping either. Texas needs to get him back in Austin for the summer camp in a few weeks so he can be around the coaches more and meet all of the commitments. Hopefully this one plays out a little longer.

“It was pretty nice at Texas,” Rhodes said. “The people are nice. What people have told me about Mack Brown is true, he is nice. He just talked about the type of program Texas is, and where I sit. It was good.”

“They (Baylor) have a pretty a pretty close relationship with me. Art Briles is a good coach,” he said.

“I’m not sure on anything yet. It’s all me right now,” he said.

Per 24/7, a second JUCO prospect has emerged. The staff has called the coach of Hutchinson CC (Hutchinson, KS) DT Toby Johnson and the feeling is Texas is close to offering. Johnson measures at 6-4/290 and currently holds offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC amongst others. No one-on-one communication has happened yet but things appear to be serious.

“If Texas offers, you've got to be the best in the country,” Johnson said, who added that if the Longhorns offer then he'll make a visit.

The Texas staff may be getting antsy with this recruitment so that's why we're seeing them go after the JUCO defensive linemen. Prevot flip-flops all of the time so we'll just have to wait and see if he camps at UT in a few weeks.
