Is anybody aware of why 2014 Edward Paris seems completely off the radar? Apparently he isn't high on Texas but I haven't heard any rationale beyond that. Paris already has an insane offer list racked up.

Louisiana native and a big LSU fan from what I'm hearing. Here's a recent photo from Tigerdroppings.

+1

Paris and his family fled New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and have lived in Mansfield since that point. His uncle, Jabbar Juluke, is the head coach at Edna Karr HS and the family supposedly has ties to LSU's RB coach, Frank Wilson, as well.

Floss correct me if I'm wrong, but Catalon is more of downhill runner than Arnett right? I like Perine, but there's enough time to see how he responds to his injury this season before getting serious.

When I found that Benenoch is Nigerian American, I was sold. Tomorrow should be very interesting, Caleb is scheduled to be at an OU camp. If he skips it, I think a commitment to Texas happens quickly.

What's with all this "approved for an offer" crap coming from Mack lol. You either offer the kid or you don't. lol at "approved" for one. Looks like Mack is starting to change up his routine of waiting until after signing day to offer any of these kids. He knows he's losing ground to the rest of the country when waiting around. Just come out and offer early Mack, everybody is doing it.

Approved for an offer = offer

Especially when coming from head coach.

It's an attempt for a loophole so he can tell 2014 kids that don't get early offer -- 'hey, nobody has an offer yet."

Maybe some of them buy it. But I wouldn't.

I agree that it's silly. He's offering these kids without saying it but at the very least he's sitting down with them and their families and letting everyone know what UT plans to do. It's his way of fighting off the big programs trying to get a jump on Texas' elite kids because he's stubborn about early offers and there is a lot of negative recruiting going on against UT.

Mack is at a crossroads with early recruiting because UT hasn't performed well at all the last two years and that's given other programs firepower. One of the issues is UT being portrayed as an arrogant and entitled program because they're stingy with offers (even though they're not winning games) and think they can offer whoever, whenever and everything will work out. Opposing recruiters saying, "Well, Texas doesn't think you're good enough right now..." and on and on.

Stacking up some victories will cure a lot of these problems but Mack has to be careful because recruiting dynamics are changing and the number of kids willing to wait on UT isn't what it was in the VY and Colt days. The old Mack wouldn't have told 10+ kids that they have offers waiting on them during the summer before their junior year, so I take that as a positive and Mack is recognizing that he needs to attack from a different angle.

JUCO DE Kewan Alfred of Trinity Valley CC is a new name to keep in mind. Major Applewhite was making his usual rounds in Beaumont a couple of weeks ago and stumbled upon Alfred working out at his high school. He recognized him from past encounters so that's how things got started. Alfred has already sent his film in to the coaches and they've requested that he visit Austin on June 27th. He's planning to be there and he's received the impression that an offer will be extended. This is great news considering things are up in the air with Hall and you never know what's going on with Prevot.

Quotes from JUCO DE Kewan Alfred:

"The way it happened kind of funny. I training in my old high school (Beaumont Central). Major Applewhite came in and was recruiting some players in my old high school. I was there working out and he recognized me from senior year," Alfred said. "I gave him my email address. Five days later, coach (Oscar) Giles called me. He said t hey liked my high school tape and he wanted to see my junior college tape from last year. I sent it to him and he said he really likes it."

"According to coach Giles, they like my work ethic, my speed and that I don't give up on a play," Alfred said. "He told me one of his favorite plays on my high school highlight was when the play went to the other side of field. I chased it all the way down and made the tackle, even forced the fumble too."

"Nobody knew I was qualifying. It was a big guess so nobody wanted to take that chance," Alfred said of his recruitment at Beaumont Central. "A lot of schools wanted highlight tape, but I didn't have one until after I signed with Trinity Valley. I liked it here, got a good feel for the coaches, for the team. They showed me they can get people out to bigger schools quickly so I liked it."

Quotes from OL Caleb Benenoch:

"It was fun (the J10 summer camp). It was tough. It was real competitive. It was a long day, real long," Benenoch said.

"I worked at guard and tackle at the camp and everywhere I went Jake (Raulerson) kind of followed me," he said. "So if I was at tackle Jake was at a five or a nine, and if I was guard he would move down to a three. So we went against each other the whole competition. If someone else tried to go against me he would try to tap them out and tell them that's my guy. It was fun and competitive."

"It was fun. We go way back to NUC (National Underclassmen Combines), so it was like a re-match," Benenoch said. "It was just two really competitive guys trying to make each other better. It was real physical but at the end it was all fun. I gave him a big hug after and we're good friends."

"He was funny (Stacy Searles). He joked around, but every once in awhile even though it was a camp he treated us almost like he would his own linemen. He would get upset and take his hat off and yell at us," he said. "It was fun, he was a good coach. I enjoyed the time I got to work with him. He's a good coach. He will tell you what you did wrong and he will tell you what you did right too. It was a really good experience for me."

"It was amazing," Benenoch said of meeting coach Brown. "I can't even find a word for it, but he had like a championship swagger about him. Like a charisma. It was cool getting to meet him and talk to him for a little bit. He's everything I expected and then some."

A&M will take any inside LB at this point but Chevis does have a nice list of offers. I think it is a great get.

With Jordan Mastrogiovanni (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Jordan-Mastrogiovanni-128583) turning into a pretty strong OU lean, it made this get even more important.

Glad you pointed that one thing out, chronic. With early offers being a hot topic lately, that's one negative that people are talking about. What's the difference between offering eight months earlier than you normally would? Word gets around quickly about who is getting a hard look from Texas (these kids camp together, social media, etc.) so you're essentially in the same place you were before. There are always going to be certain kids UT will have to do damage control with because Mack simply isn't going to throw out 100+ offers.

Per Inside Texas, TE Trent Gow of Mansfield is back on the radar but as a grayshirt possibility. He camped at UT on Sunday and Chambers liked what he saw so they sat down to discuss the opportunity. Gow says he's on board so it sounds like it's just a matter of Texas extending the offer.

RE: Alfred and Prevot. Texas has a tough choice here. Is Alfred superior to Prevot? So much so that you're willing to give up 2 years? It sounds like they can get Alfred quickly, but Prevot is going to drag the process out. I think Alfred will be there at the end of the summer. The staff should and can wait.

Holding on to Daeshon Hall should be priority #1 at the position.

Additionally, the 2014 in state DE class is loaded. Myles Garrett, Solomon Thomas and Derick Robertson are all elite. All could play both sides, Texas should get two of the three. Thomas and Robertson appear to be Texas leans.

Hoza Scott is a hybrid and could also play DE and is the top ranked junior in the state.

Personally, I think Texas needs some balance at the position. The depth is good at quick end, but Ced Reed and Daeshon Hall are the only strong side ends after Okafor leaves.

Major deserves credit here, he found another East Texas gem in Alfred. The man can evaluate with the best of them.

I like the personal attention to the big time 2014 recruits. It'll be Watkins and the entire Texas staff. That's attention. It worked well with Hoza Scott and it should work well with Nick Watkins. You have to think having Alex Norman in the program will help.

Yep. Harsin obviously views him as a system guy who can be moved around within the offense depending on the set. With Smythe already committed as a flex TE, there was a need for an H-back type willing to do the dirty work. Swaim can contribute immediately once he enrolls in Spring 2013.

More quotes from JUCO TE Geoff Swaim:

"This morning, about 11:15, I met with coach (Bryan) Harsin, coach (Bruce) Chambers and coach (Mack) Brown," Swaim said. "We were going over the visit how I felt about Austin and Texas. We talked about what kind of role I would have in the team. They thought I could take a leadership role since I'm a JUCO guy. We talked about that for 20 minutes or so. Basically they said it comes down to they like me as a person, they like my character. They thought I could help them there so they offered me a full scholarship. To me, it's a pretty incredible dream come true."

"When they fly you out, you pretty much know they're serious. I'm from California, so they're not just giving you the time of day when they recruit you," Swaim said. "You don't ever want to get your hopes up too much. But in the back of your mind you're hoping they'll offer you."

"When they said it, that they were going to offer a scholarship, it was incredible. Unreal. I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity. I'm going to work hard for Texas."

"What I think I bring personally, I bring work ethic, good attitude. I'm not a selfish player" Swaim said. "Texas is all about winning. That's all that matters.

"What I bring, is a hard-nosed ball player. I'm really physical. I love to hit, but I can catch a pass. I bring physicality, a toughness, a good attitude."

"What we talked about, they want me to come in and play tight end, H-back and fullback. At JUCO, I do a lot of shifting, a lot of motions, which is what Texas does. They said they can line me up at tight end, where I can work on the defensive end to get an edge. They can motion me to fullback, to wing, I can get in the flat and catch the ball. I feel like I can establish the run, set the edge, catch in the flat, but predominantly I'll help as a blocker."

"Basically I just wanted to show I belonged there," Knox said. "As I was doing the drills and everything coach (Stacy) Searels took me out of my age group and put me with the first o-linemen who were doing the one-on-one's first and that he was using as examples and stuff. It felt kind of cool to be with all the top o-line recruits for UT and doing all the drills first."

"It was great," Knox said. "He (Searels) really doesn't act his age. He acts like a 20-year old man. He's upbeat out there. He kids around with us a little bit and he's dedicated to winning a national championship this year. They're all about their business up there at UT."

"Coach Beck (Knox's high school coach) told me to call them tonight and I called coach Searels and he told me I'm a great player and did great today and basically how I've been cleared by everyone to be offered by UT," Knox said.

"Nothing has really changed at all because its UT, of course they were always high on my list," Knox said. "But I'm not trying to think about that right now. I'm just dedicated to winning a state championship this year with my team."

I think he's more likely to go to LSU; however, if we can get coach Cyprien to talk to him, who knows? That man is a recruiting monster - he put together an amazing basketball class.

I think Manning is coming by tomorrow, and I've read elsewhere that some think the fact that Chevis committed to us might help with Manning (I guess they're friends or something).

I just think the offense that we run is much more appealing for WR's. We have our good share of QB's coming in as well. (Matt Davis, Kohl Stewart, Kenny Hill)

A&M is a player but LSU has the built-in advantage with RSJ's AAU coach having connections to the school in some way. That's pretty much how this whole thing came to be but crazier things have happened. He may like Sumlin's pitch like Ridgeway did.

Quotes from 2014 WR KD Cannon after UT's summer camp:

"I think the highlights were my 40 time and the one-on-ones," said Cannon, who clocked a 4.40. "In the one-on-ones, it was just the corners I went against. There were some great corners there but I think I did very well against them."

"I just showed them how fast I am, how I can catch the ball really well," Cannon said. "My strength is my speed and I just have a way of getting separation in tight coverage."

"The coaches were just telling me to work hard. They said they don't like to offer sophomores but they'll get me an offer when I become a junior. It was great. I got to see the bowl game rings (Mack Brown) had, watches, trophies, he even has a Lego Longhorn helmet."

"With Texas, I like their receiving coach (Darrell Wyatt) a lot. He came down to see me during spring football and I've been liking him since then," Cannon said. "He was teaching me different moves to get off the line, making my routes a lot better."

"I want to make sure the school I pick is a perfect fit for me," he said.

I understand that there are great players coming in and we know of Sumlin with Houston but how do you know how good your offense is?? Don't you have a new coaching staff?? I know that last year I had NO clue what we were going to get with Harsin as our OC. I mean, I had an idea but I wasbt for sure.

What do we do with D.J. Monroe?
One of the most common complaints about the Texas offense in 2010, legitimately, was the lack of involvement for WR/RB D.J. Monroe. Despite averaging 8.5 yards per carry, Monroe only received 23 hand-offs. He saw that number more than double to 48 (plus eight catches) under Brian Harsin, but finding the right place for him in the offense was still difficult.
But Brown announced Wednesday that the Horns were creating a new position specifically for Monroe and freshman speedster Daje Johnson.
“Bryan and (co-offensive coordinator) Major (Applewhite) and (wide receivers coach) Darrell (Wyatt) are calling it T 'n Z right now, which is part tailback, part Z receiver,” Brown said. “We feel those guys are speed guys and can get the ball in their hands and help us with explosive plays. They're working hard this summer on getting packages to get D.J. Moore involved and to get Daje involved early in the process because we think he has a chance to be a good player with his explosive speed.”
The announcement comes as little surprise, given the number of times Daje Johnson has been mentioned by Jesus Shuttlesworth's sources. [Subscribers, see Inside the Humidor entries from 4/2/12, 5/29/12 and 6/4/12.]
The position itself will function like a wingback who frequently motions.
“They'll line up in the backfield some and they'll shift and motion to the Z, which is our flanker position,” said Brown.
When asked to give a comparison to the position, Brown said, “Reggie Bush.”

Quotes from DE Torrodney Prevot:

“Honestly I had to work and I couldn’t take off (to attend Texas' camp),” said the No. 234 player in the country from Alief (Texas) Taylor. “Texas is still very high on my list. We didn’t make the camp this past weekend, but my uncle and I are setting something up for us and my mom to go down there.”

“I am thinking about getting my commitment out of the way sometime before the summer,” he said. “I have The Opening and I am going to Cal this Friday. Then I might go to USC next week or something like that. I’ll probably make my decision next month.”

“My uncle [Robin Toy] and I have been doing a lot of research lately and we are just going to come through everything and break it down from there,” Prevot said. “We are looking at how many commitments they have and how many people they have signed over the past two years. We are also looking at the educational side of things. There are a bunch of different things we are looking at.”

“My uncle has been through everything with me,” he said. “He has multiple degrees in marketing and business management, so he knows the game. He used to work for a recruiting agency and knows all the ropes.”

“I’ve been staying very humble,” he said. “People tell me that all the time so I have learned that about myself.”

“It’s actually kind of fun but it does get old to me at times,” he said. “You just want to lay back a bit. But everything is just fine, just getting love from everyone is cool.”

“With (Barkevius) Mingo (of LSU) leaving next year they said it depends on how much I work but I could get that starting position by my sophomore year,” he said. “That intrigues me because I see someone that is the same size as me, and he could go in the first round of the draft.”

With Massington to USC, Rhodes to Baylor and Samples' situation a bit tricky, do you guys think that the staff might look the JUCO way for a WR, or just continue to evaluate Samples and/or try to flip Rhodes?

Forgot to answer this one, Bloeddyr. Good question.

Just my opinions...because Texas is obviously more than willing to go the JUCO route to fill holes so they can win now, you can't rule it out even though I don't see it. They may try to steal a guy like WR Devin Lauderdale who's currently committed to Texas Tech. I think Rhodes will be recruited all the way through especially if UT is much improved in the passing game and Baylor goes back to being Baylor. Briles has too much recruiting momentum right now because of RG3. Samples is an afterthought at this point. The relationship between the Texas staff and Dallas Skyline/Coach Samples just isn't there.

RSJ met with almost everyone on both the football and basketball staffs and he was also able to spend time with the current QBs and WRs. “I think they’re expecting me to have an immediate impact,” Swaim said. “That’s why you recruit the junior college level.”

“Coach Brown talked about that - I’m extremely competitive. I can’t wait to win at a higher level. I want to be challenged. I want to play big-time football,” Swaim said. “I want to play for a national championship, in front of 101,000 people. Texas is as good as it gets. It’s a huge state with an incredible fan base, where you can win day in and day out. For me, the decision was easy."

Does anyone know how the Nick Watkins visit went?

Quotes from 2014 CB Nick Watkins after the UT visit (24/7):

“I toured the whole campus on Wednesday,” Watkins said. “I got to see all the facilities, the stadium, the practice field, the field house, all the trophy cases and awards. There were a lot of those (trophies and awards), for sure. I also met with the coaches and, you know, just basically saw and did everything there was to see and do. It was really a great experience and an awesome visit.”

“My mom actually came with me on the visit,” explained the Bishop Dunne product. “I wanted my dad to be there, but he couldn’t be because he’s a police officer and was working. My uncle, who happens to live in Austin, went with us as well. Everyone enjoyed themselves. We all had a good time getting to see what Texas had to offer. I know my mom liked it all for sure. She couldn’t believe all the attention the coaches showed me and how well they treated all of us. She liked getting to see it all and liked talking with the coaches too.”

“Coach (Mack) Brown runs a great program there,” said Watkins. “He’s a competitive coach and he wants his teams to compete at the top level. He’s used to having a winning tradition and I like that. He and the rest of the coaches want to win and they want to put you in the best position to succeed in both football and in real life. They encourage you all the time and push you to get a good education, which is obviously very important.”

“I really enjoyed getting to visit with Coach Akina,” Watkins told Hookem.com. “We had a chance to talk for a while and he talked a lot of football with me. He showed me some of the key things he likes to teach and told me how he could help develop my game. I like his style of coaching and it’s obvious he knows what he’s doing. You can stay at a place as long as he has, especially at a school like Texas, and not know what you’re doing.”

“It’s his (Akina) record that stands out to me,” Watkins said. “You can see all the guys he’s put in the league and you know that he’s really good at what he does. Just being around him puts me at ease because you’re learning from one of the best. He makes his players successful in both college and NFL. That right there is a big deal, because if you’re a coachable player like I am, you can just go in and trust him. You know that he knows best. You can’t doubt him because he has the record to prove it.”

“Right now everyone is pretty much in the thick of things,” explained Watkins. “I have two years to make a decision so I’m no rush. Everyone is on the same level right now. No single school is ahead of another, regardless of what people say or might think. It’s level playing field for me. I’m just trying to take it all in and review my options.”

“Alex (Norman) has told me a lot about Texas. He loves it down there, a lot actually. He loves everything about Texas. He’s trying to push me toward them pretty hard. He tells me all the time that as soon as I get an offer, I need to commit. He says that I’ll love Texas as much as he does once it’s all said and done. He’s a good recruiter for sure. He works hard at it,” Watkins said while laughing.

Quotes from 2014 DE Myles Garrett. His older sister runs track for A&M.

"They (the Texas staff) have really been excited for me to come and asked me multiple times," Garrett said. "My coach called me and told me they asked me one more time. They really wanted me to come to this camp because it was the last camp they had. So I made an effort to come to this one and show them what I have."

"It was great. They had great facilities," Garrett said. "At first I wasn't really sure of what to do out there because there were some new drills and the second half of the camp I was sure of what to do and I went out there and gave it my all and they told me I was doing the best."

"It was great," he said. "He (Mack Brown) showed me a couple of his items from bowl games."

"I had a giant smile on my face, ear-to-ear (when Mack approved me for an offer)," Garrett said. "I didn't know what to say. I shook (Brown's) hand and thanked him."

"She (Garrett's sister) didn't like it," he said with a laugh.

"It's top five. It's a good place to go," he said. "It's a good defensive end school, a good defensive school. So I'll keep it in mind."

"It's getting good right now but when September 1st comes I think it will get more interesting," Harvey said.

"They've (Texas) been trying to get me down there (to visit). I think they're going to offer me soon," he said. "I think that's why they're trying to get me down there. I had to go to the dentist one day so I couldn't make it that day."

Wes is one of the best in the business. Yes he's a friend, but his articles are consistently thoughtful, well structured and concise. Believe me, it's difficult to write like Wes does.

Several things give me pause about Prevot. I think it's safe to call him flaky now. His uncle could be a problem. Most troubling is Prevot's frame. He checked in about 200 pounds at Junior Day and we have no reason to believe he's added bulk. Does have the frame to be a DE, does he have the frame to be a hybrid OLB / DE? Prevot could be 40-50 pounds away.

Hoza Scott for example, can answer yes to the frame questions.

Frankly, we know more about Alfred than Prevot. His frame is already there, he sleeps, eats and drinks football, and he's proven himself against scholarship athletes. Prevot might have a higher upside and 2 more years of eligibility, but Alfred feels like a safer bet. Give me Alfred.

Also worth noting Shuttlesworth over at IT had said they've been hearing positive things about RSJ as well.

More quotes from DE Torrodney Prevot (24/7):

“Everyone seems to be recruiting me pretty hard,” said Prevot. “Most schools are doing the same things, recruiting wise. Everyone is showing the same amount of love to me really. Not one school is recruiting me harder than the other. Everybody is just getting out there and push to get me to their school, at least for a visit. Right now, I’m just trying to sort through it all really. It’s a lot to consider.”

“Texas is definitely still a school that I’m interested in,” he said. “They have a great program there in Austin. The coaching staff seems to be very family oriented. Everyone gets along and doesn’t have any problems, which is real cool. They’re definitely one of my top schools.”

“The last time I spoke to the Texas coaches was last week I think,” explained Prevot. “It was right after their camp, so on June 12 or so. I was originally going to attend the camp and I really wanted to, but then my sister’s graduation happened on the same day, so I couldn’t miss it for anything.”

“My plan is to get down there for another visit,” Prevot told Hookem.com. “I will probably take it before the summer is over. I want to see what Texas is really all about and get a good feel for the coaches. I want to know the story behind Texas.”

“The number one thing overall when looking at all these schools is academics,” said Prevot. “I want to attend a college that has a great business management school, so I always look into that. That’s what will give me the best opportunity for my future if football doesn’t work out for me.”

"I’m still going through the process of reviewing all my options,” he explained. “I’m looking at each school closely. First I plan to narrow my list down pretty soon to a top five or ten. I really don’t have like a set date as to when I plan to decide and announce, but I’m pretty sure it will be right around when school starts. It’s going to be coming soon. Sooner than later actually.”

A summer commitment from Alfred gives you room to breathe at the DE position. Things are still uncertain with Hall and you never know with Prevot. You not only get a guy that can contribute immediately should Jeffcoat leave early for the NFL, but he gives the staff the freedom to pursue other DE prospects for as long as possible should they want to do so.

I'm with you guys on Alfred. I hope Hall stays with his commitment and I am not as high on Prevot as many others. I definitely prefer Alfred. As BFLT said, Prevot might have a higher upside and to more years of eligibility, but is that necessary? I mean the '14 DE class looks pretty good, and apparently Texas sits well with Solomon Thomas, Derick Roberson and Myles Garret. I would, personally, prefer any of those three over Prevot.

Call me crazy, but I think if Hall was going to decommit, he could have already done so. There has been ample opportunity to do so, yet he's remained a Texas commit. I like Hall quite a bit. That frame and basketball athleticism scream NFL.

I'd be good with Hall, Alfred and continuing to recruit Prevot. However if Solomon Thomas, Derick Roberson and Myles Garrett all have excellent junior seasons and surpass Prevot as a prospect, Texas should sit tight. As Bloeddyr10 stated, Texas is sitting in a good position with the 3 junior DEs. Thomas and Roberson will be early commits if offered. Garrett will be more challenging, but Texas seems to have a good relationship with him and his coaches. The aforementioned quotes from Garrett certainly don't hurt.

Update on 2014 OL Cameron Robinson who has recently received invites to both the US Army and Under Armour all-star games:

"It's just an honor. I didn't think that would happen. I attribute it to the hard work I've put in over the years," Robinson said. "I'm always trying to critique every part of my game, get better. It's an honor."

"Being all-star games, it will be a chance to have a little fun, show that I can hold my own against some of the best players in the country."

"I tweaked my groin a little bit at Texas. (LSU) Coach (Gary) Studrawa said don't work out, just come. I may go back to either LSU or Alabama in July," Robinson said.

"It went really good. We did some one-on-one pass rushing. They pretty much just told me I showed everything I needed to do (at Alabama). I guess I did pretty well," Robinson said. "The one at Texas went really well also. I think I had a good camp there. Coach (Stacy) Searels told me he liked what he saw. Overall, I had a good camp at Texas also."

"Those are just my top three (Alabama, LSU and Texas). I've spoken with their coaches the most. I have a good relationship with them," Robinson said. "They all three play, in my opinion, in the two best conferences in college football. They all win, have winning traditions and you feel like you're at home. All three have amazing fanbases. I like everything about them, really."

"I work on every part of my game. I work on my pass blocking, my agility, footwork drills, jumping rope," he said. "I'll work on everything. Even if I think I'm good at a certain part, I'm still going to work on it to get better. You can never can be perfect. I want to be well-rounded."

Believe it or not, we are more informed about how recruiting works than some of the recruits. Also, we always see the end result and can predict what will happen. These guys go through so much emotions they get confused.

I'm sure that he has not followed Saban's recruiting like many of us have. He is just wrapped in emotion about all the pretty things that Saban just told him. We don't go through that, Im sure if Saban sweet talks to me and does his thing he could convince me to become an Alabama fan.

I will say this about SEC recruiting.

The circle of coaches in Texas is a pretty tight bunch, and word gets around pretty quickly. IF an SEC school like Bama tries to pull the crap that they have pulled on kids in the past with a Texas high school kid. They could lose access to every program in the state.

Coaches here are not dumb, they for the most part will look after their kids best interest, if they see one Texas kid get screwed over because Saban finds someone he likes better it will back fire on him in a big way.

The recruiting advantage Texas has right now is due in large part to the job Mack has done with taking care of the relationship his has with Texas high school coaches. He bends over backwards to showing them lots of love.

I have no doubt that Knox's Bama offer is legitimate and committable. He's a top 50-100 national junior. That being said, most of Bama's shotgun offers aren't committable.

Quotes from 2014 LB Josh Walker of Gilmer (24/7):

“I’ve heard from many different schools,” said Walker. “I don’t think I have any offers yet, but would have to double check with my coach. Schools that have shown a lot of interest are Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, SMU and TCU.”

“Right now I have a top four,” Walker explained.. “At the moment, Texas A&M is my number one, Texas is two, LSU is three and Oklahoma is four. I really like the SEC and the style of play there, because I believe it really fits me. So that’s why I’m high on A&M and LSU. As for Texas, they’re a great school and one I think would be a good fit. I grew up an Oklahoma fan, but I’m not too much of one anymore.”

“The last time I visited Texas was actually for the spring game,” Walker said. “I wanted to make it down for a summer camp, but I couldn’t make it due to some 7-on-7 stuff with my team. That’s been keeping me very busy. But when I went down there in April, I had a great time. It felt like home. I felt like I was back in Gilmer honestly. The coaching staff was amazing. Plus the feel for everything was great.”

“After I went to the game I’ve heard from them some,” he said. “I’ve received about three letters and they want to try and get me to come back down there. Coach (Stacy) Searels is actually the one recruiting me for them. He’s spoken to my coaches and everything like that.”

“I really like Coach Searels,” said Walker. “He’s a great coach. I like his personality, the way he talks and what he has to say. He explains everything real well to me and goes into detail about recruiting. He lays it out on how they choose people, how grades are important and all that stuff. He makes everything clear for you.”

“I would love to go to Texas,” Walker told Hookem.com. “If they offer me, it would be a hard decision to make. It would really give me something to think about and I would have to seriously weigh my options on which school I wanted to go to. They’re a great school.”

“One of the main things for me is location,” explained Walker. “I’d like to stay close to home. I really don’t want to go too far off. Next is academics, which is very important to me. I’ve always tried to be a good student, so that’s probably my number one thing after location. The school I choose needs to have great academics. I also want to be comfortable with the coaching staff as well.”

“I just love to hit people,” said Walker. “I love to play defense and hitting people. I’d say I’m a good pass rusher and run stopper, but I can drop back and cover if I need to. Most of all though, I just like to get physical on defense and stop them. Like I said, I love to hit.”

The way I understand the rule is coaches are not allowed to call a recruit until April 15 - May 31st of their junior year. Recruits (of any age) can call coaches whenever they want and talk for as long as they want. Brown is a sophomore so Akina shouldn't be calling. There may be a way around this rule if you call the high school coach and the kid happens to be on campus at the time, but I'm not sure on that. Possibly something similiar to the "bump" exception where a coach can speak with a prospect for a few minutes should he happen to see him at school. Not sure why Wilkerson tweeted that unless he just chose his words poorly.

Update on LB Naashon Hughes (24/7):

“We talked about my grayshirt offer the last time I was in Austin,” Hughes told Hookem.com. “It was at the camp earlier this month. They told me that they like what they saw and that there’s been some really good improvement. They said I need to keep working hard, have a good attitude about it all and play hard this season. If I do all that, they said it should turn into a regular offer. That’s what I’m really hoping for. It sounds like it could happen, which pushes me to stay focused.”

“A lot of schools tell me that I should walk away from the grayshirt offer,” Hughes explained. “I don’t listen to them though. Texas is where I want to be. I want to be a Longhorn. I don’t want to go anywhere else or play for anyone else. There have been plenty of schools, like Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Carolina and LSU, that are still trying to recruit me. They tell me I don’t need to beg for an offer. Like I said though, I just tune them out and blow it off. Texas is the place for me.”

“Camrhon tells me all about Texas,” Hughes said. “He tells me how much he loves it down there and how much I’m going to love it too. He said it’s just a great place to be and that I’ll like everyone down there because your coaches and team are great too. He’s also told me about the workouts there, which sound pretty hard, but he says they pay off big time.”

“I’m working real hard to improve myself this summer,” said Hughes. “I wake up every morning at 8:00 A.M. and do a workout at the field house. We start with a circuit workout, then I immediately lift weights right after the circuit session. I then take a break until 1:00 P.M. where I have another workout session with lifting some weights again. After that, I do a lot of running. It’s a good workout and I’m seeing good results. I also work on my football stuff by doing 7-on-7 with my team and 1-on-1 drills too, so that keeps me going.”

"Next year I’ll be doing a little bit of everything for my team,” explained Hughes. “I’ll be playing linebacker and safety on defense. On offense, I’ll be moving around a lot. They’re planning on using me at quarterback, wide receiver and tight end as well. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to getting out there and getting after it.”

“The Texas coaches told me that they aren’t 100-percent sure where I’ll play,” Hughes said. “They have an idea, but they aren’t certain. It will either be at outside linebacker or strong safety. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens once I’m on campus.”

"I’m game for either one really,” he said. “I don’t have a preference as far as that goes. I’m just excited to be a Longhorn.”

Per 247, it is in fact Devon Allen.

Personally, I'd rather the staff pursue Kyrion Parker. Pursuing Allen feels like the safe move.

Quotes from the father of WR Devon Allen (24/7):

“Coach Wyatt and Devon talked yesterday actually,” Devon’s father, Louis Allen, said. “They had a chance to talk for awhile and we all spoke to him for a little bit.”

“Basically he told us that they really like Devon,” Mr. Allen said. “He said that they have a serious interest in him and want to see him more and talk to him more. I don’t know all the specifics of the conversation, but it was a good one.”

“Texas is a good program,” Mr. Allen told Hookem.com. “It would be great for him to go there. They are a good school and they are relatively close to home, so he wouldn’t be too far off.”

“He’s very determined to do both,” Louis explained. “He really likes both sports and he wants to go to a school that will let him play football in the fall and run track in the spring. Most likely the school he picks will be open to letting him do both.”

“It’s just very important to him,” Mr. Allen said of track. “He was just named the Gatorade Arizona Track and Field Athlete of the Year this week, so we’re very proud of what he’s accomplished.”

I knee-jerked like everyone else when it all went down and was fearful that it probably wouldn't work out because of Texas' history with de-commitments, but I think things are much better now even though UT isn't in the clear. I don't know what made him pull back whether it was his AAU coach, father, etc., but he obviously needed time. Rooming with Swoopes this weekend and being around the other UT commitments can only help.

Great news. I'll add that he spoke with Akina last week to schedule the trip. Official visits for all 2013 prospects start on September 1st (the day of the Wyoming game and the opening Saturday for college football) but no word if this will be his official to UT. Very encouraging update since he wasn't able to make it to Austin for any of the summer camps.

On RSJ - he mentioned he will visit LSU next week and also Texas, A&M, Baylor and Oregon (for the Opening) in the near future. Quotes below on recent visits:

"They (UT) had some kind of coaches' meeting out of town or something. We weren't going to come that day but (Brown) said to come, and I guess he cancelled his trip. It kind of showed me how they feel about me. It showed that they think I'm very important to their program."

"I went to both A&M and Texas last week. At (the) A&M, I saw the campus, met the coaches, played a little five-on-five basketball with the current team. It's a nice campus and a nice program... At first, Coach Sumlin wasn't there ... but after I checked out the basketball facility, he came through. We sat down and talked a little bit about the program and the school. He was real cool."

That's a great question and I honestly don't know because RSJ has one more year to go and he doesn't play strictly WR like DGB does, but I don't think it's a stretch at all to say they're comparable. DGB is likely the better athlete but I think RSJ is the more versatile football player being able to play multiple positions on either side of the ball. People throw the word "special" around too much but a guy as big as RSJ just shouldn't be able to do the things he does. This weekend will be a great indicator of just how good he really is and I can't wait to see what the national reporters say about him.

I just read a report on 24/7 that he actually hasn't been in touch with the UT staff yet but he's coming into town for events related to the International Bowl held in Austin every year. Many of the prospects will be staying in the UT dorms while in town. You would think it's illegal because it could be a recruiting advantage for Texas but it's not because the NCAA considers this an international competition. TE Durham Smythe will be in town as well as he will be playing in the game next year.

I work with a Bama grad, and a LSU alumnus. We talk football regularly, St. Augustine is a big recruiting high school for both programs. I believe the St. Augustine HC has a prior relationship with Saban. I smell a recruiting war brewing in New Orleans.

I mean this politely as possible, Fournette is a hail mary. I respect Major for trying, but the kid is going to go Bama or LSU.

I believe Texas' only Southeast recruiting excursions should be along the I -20 corridor in Louisiana. Texas can and has won recruiting battles there. It could take Big 12 expansion in the Southeast to establish a recruiting foot print.

Both were top performers.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/highschool/06/24/five-star-top-performers/index.html

13. QB Tyrone Swoopes -- Whitewright (Texas): Swoopes was on target most of the day and was the victim of a few drops early as he and his receivers began to build chemistry, but he got better as the day wore on. His mechanics aren't great, but he does have nice touch and he was on target most of the day. Swoopes isn't a pure passer, but he was better than both Max Browne and Johnathon McCrary as far as consistency throughout the day.

Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/highschool/06/24/five-star-top-performers/index.html#ixzz1ylOrIysL

6. WR Ricky Seals-Jones -- Sealy (Texas): Seals-Jones was one of the players who redeemed himself at the event. After looking good in drills on day one, he couldn't get separation, dropped some passes and struggled running routes on Saturday. After a couple of early drops, he started to get into rhythm and started to catch the ball consistently and become a huge threat for his team. He and quarterback Tyrone Swoopes began to develop a nice chemistry down the line for the Southwest. He still struggles catching the ball out in front, but he showed his potential at the position.

Here are some random quotes (from 24/7) on the recruitment of OL Caleb Benenoch since he's throwing out mixed signals lately. Because his father lives in Nigeria, this thing could take a while. He may want to wait until his father comes to the US and sees his future school before committing:

“He likes playing the game,” a source with knowledge of the recruitment said. “When it's over, it'll be Texas.”

“He knows about every lineman Texas has recruited and every lineman that will be on campus when he gets there,” the source said. “If there's anything working against Texas, it might be that he really sees Oklahoma as being a place where he could get on the field earlier.”

“He'll make five visits and then commit,” the source said. “He's all UT. He hasn't come out and said it, but I think he's a silent (commitment).”

“When he (Benenoch's father) gets in the States he'll have to see the school before (Benenoch) can commit,” a source with knowledge of the situation said. “That's why he might not end up making the decision until official visits.”

“She (Benenoch's mother) recently became a UT fan,” a source said. “The way things stand right now UT is where she wants him to be.”

Update on OL/DL Andrew Billings who recently visited Northwestern and Indiana (24/7):

“The family had a plan from the start and they're sticking to it,” Herbst said. “They had the Northwestern trip scheduled for a long time, so they took it because they wanted to keep their word.”

“When Texas offers kids there have been instances where they've said you've got 24 or 48 hours or whatever timeframe to decide or the offer's off the table, but that wasn't the case here,” Herbst said. “They want Andrew, but at the same time, they know Andrew is going to take his time."

“This decision for the Billings' is going to be about a lot more than football,” Herbst said. “They're really looking at academics and what the best fit is for Andrew in terms of the complete package a school has to offer.”

“They're (Texas) in the top five, at least,” Billings said. “That's what I'd say. They've made it clear they want him and there's legitimate interest from the family.”

“All I know for a fact is we start fall practice Aug. 19,” Herbst said. “If he hasn't made a decision by then, then I'd imagine it wouldn't be too long after that.”

OL Deon Mix of Batesville, MS is another longshot but Bo Davis stopped by his school during the spring evaluation period and has since been trying to get him to Austin for a visit.

"My boss, him and Bo Davis go way back. He said they've been looking at me for a while and they like my film. They wanted me to come out there for a visit," said Mix. "Right now I'm pretty steady with Mississippi State. That's still where my heart is, but you never know. The future might open up something different."

"I know Texas is a big powerhouse every year. I'd like to go somewhere like that," Mix said.

I can't remember if we've talked about this kid yet, but 2014 DB Laurence Jones of Monroe, LA is a guy UT has their eye on. They were by his school in the spring and he's currently listing an offer from the Longhorns. He doesn't talk recruiting much but one plus is he has a ton of family in Texas.

The Orangebloods and Hook Em 247 mods are inferring that Alfred will get offered when he visits. The Texas staff seems pretty anxious to get him on campus. It could be this Wednesday.

I think he commits during the visit if offered. He's a Texas kid, and he doesn't have many offers.

I think this is a solid move. Alfred will only be able to play 2 seasons, but the 2014 DE class is well above average.

A recent quote from DE Torrodney Prevot who will camp at LSU in mid-July:

"After the LSU camp that's probably going to be it," Prevot said. "I will basically be with my family after that. I'm going to work out at LSU and then take it easy and hang out. I'm very open and basically filling out each position with teams. I just want to get a good feeling for each team and see where they're going to stand on my list."

The moment we offer Alfred, we say goodbye to Prevot.

Looks like the only thing that would prevent the visit from happening is his mother being unable to get off of work on Wednesday. The staff wants to get him on campus as soon as they can so it sounds like a an offer is imminent.

Yeah, I think the staff realized a while back that their chances with Prevot aren't very good.

I understand that drills are drills and completely different from live action, but I loved hearing how coachable and humble Swoopes is and he always seems to adjust to any environment he's in. He did the same at the Elite 11 in Dallas. I imagine it's quite surprising for him going from throwing with kids at 2A Whitewright to the best prospects in the nation; huge difference. Glad to hear he more than settled in once 7-on-7 started. That video is a good watch for anyone who may be questioning his arm strength.

Not necessarily.

At this point I think it is more about a little insurance in case Prevot does go elsewhere. Also, Alfred provides more immediate help on the D line.

Weighing in at 200 lbs, Prevot needs a RS year and some quality time w/Bennie before he would be ready to contribute.

I agree with that. You lock up Alfred and continue to go after Prevot even if it's unlikely that he signs with UT.

Update on WR Devon Allen of Phoenix, AZ (24/7):

“Last week Texas contacted my head coach,” said Allen. “They let him know that they were interested in me and wanted to talk more with me. It was their wide receivers coach and he said that they really liked my film. They thought a lot of the way that I played so they wanted to let me know they are interested.”

“After Coach Wyatt got a hold of my coaches, I heard from the Longhorn track coaches,” Allen explained. “They contacted me on Facebook actually. They told me that they like me and are interested in me too, just like the football coaches are. Track is very important to me, so that’s definitely a big plus.”

“I like Texas a lot,” Allen told Hookem.com. “They’ve always been a good football team. They are a team I’ve sort of always watched. They’re one of those teams that are always good, so I’ve always kept an eye on them. But one of the main reasons I’m interested, is because I’m a track athlete and a football player, and I know they do a great job of supporting athletes who do both.”

“You can look at Marquise Goodwin as a prime example of that,” said Allen. “He plays football but also just qualified for the Olympics. That definitely caught my eye and grabbed my attention right away. That shows me that you can do both at Texas and do both very well.”

“That’s one reason they (Texas) stand out so much,” Allen said. “They have success letting guys do both. It makes me think that the football coaches let the track coaches do their thing with their athletes. They don’t just let them borrow their players for a month or whatever like some schools do. I mean, you can’t jump 27 feet in the long jump like Marquise did without a lot of training. That right there shows me that the Texas coaching staffs support each other and don’t mind letting their players do their thing. They put the athletes first. That says a lot to me.”

"Being able to do both is the deal breaker for it,” explained Allen. “That’s what will make or break me going somewhere. So far I’ve been lucky and every coach I’ve spoken with at the programs I’m interested in have all been very supportive of it all. That’s great for me that they’re open to it. I definitely want to try it my freshman year and see how it goes. Many people say it will be hard to balance them, but I feel like I can do it. There are many guys out there who can, so I don’t see why I’m any different.”
