Gonna have to disagree with the comments here. RSJ is the best player in state and the Texas staff is paid top dollar to put in long hours to reel in talent that wins championships. Getting the 5* players will always be 100x harder b/c everybody puts it all on the line resource wise b/c guys like this win championships. To act like Texas is above this when the Bamas, USCs and LSUs grind out these recruitments does not make sense to me. Regarding Hunter Jr and Devon Allen, they are simply not the same caliber player nor do they have the upside of RSJ.
I can assure you there is more to the recruitment than we will ever know. Although I do not want to pass speculation off as fact, we do know he de-committed without the knowledge of his high school coach who was shocked at the news. Then, his AAU coach became involved in his recruitment and made a trip to Austin with RSJ. I don't want treat this as shenanigans just because he is getting help from his AAU coach b/c lots of these people could be good role models in a recruits life. However, I don't see how Texas would just drop RSJ based on speculation we didn't want to deal with prima donnas - when we wait for several top recruits to the end every year. That just doesn't make sense.
Well said. I agree. All signs point to something shady going on with RSJ's recruitment on HIS end, not ours.

Inside Texas reporting that there are transfer rumors surrounding WR John Harris. He's apparently not happy about the lack of playing time and that he's been somewhat passed up on the depth chart by two freshmen (Jones and Sanders).

Per 24/7, OL/DL Andrew Billings' announcement date has been pushed back yet again. The family has decided to take an unofficial visit to TCU this weekend. He's also recently been offered by Oklahoma but that's not supposed have anything to do with the delay.

How do we know that RSJ is the best player in the state? Because Ketch and Rivals says so? No single player is good enough to get worked up over losing. As good as Vince was he still had another 27 guys on that roster that made it to the NFL besides him.
I remember when we cried about losing Calhoun and Washington, neither has panned out.
Remember the can't miss Fred Rouse or Perrloser
RSJ is no can't miss prospect, he is going to be a TE by the time he reports to camp and he doesn't want to accept this fact.
Now I don't know if RSJ is being manipulated, but Texas has 2 guys committed that have season ending knee injuries. Both are lesser prospects than RSJ. So we know not recruiting him has nothing to do with his injury.
We recruited Jeffcoat to the end same with Hicks and a few guys we missed on, so we know we are willing to stick it out as kids drag out their recruitment.
So why do we stop recruiting a kid like him?
I think we know the real reason, it's the fire at the root of all that smoke.
RSJ is one of the top recruits in the state hands down. And you're right in pointing out that he may well not pan out as a great college football player but no one person is really a guarantee.... i.e. Garrett Gilbert. But you have to do what it takes to bring in the top players because they give you the best probability for production. We wouldn't be able to go out and get DII kids and win just based off of our name being Texas. Vince Young did play with alot of NFL talents but even still its hard to imagine Texas winning the National Championship without him. Football is the biggest team sport in America, you need 11 guys at a time doing the right thing to be successful. If you're missing one stud at one position that could be the clutch that trips you up against the Alabama's of the world. Like chronic said, if Alabama, LSU and other power house/national championship teams wait to the end then we can too. The coaches showed last year that they will wait on some top recruits, if its worth it. I think that they didnt stop recruiting RSJ because they didnt want to wait or felt like they didnt need a top player's services, but because of some other serious concern.

I've seen RSJ play in person. My cousin is a '14 recruit and we saw RSJ at the rivals 5* challenge. Both of us though he looked better than expected, and even before I saw him in person I thought he was top player in state from his film. I think he can be a WR and don't understand all talk of TE either.
I think pointing Vince out may be a bad example considering his performance in Rose Bowls, although I agree with the point.

The kid is very athletic, there is no doubt of this, but the fact is he is still growing and going to get heavier. He is already 230, by the time he reports I fully expect him to be over 240 and possibly 250. It's just what happens to kids with his body type. It's not a downgrade to say he is growing into a TE, he could be another Gresham or even Kellen Winslow, but the kid will not be a WR on the next level and he is kidding himself if he thinks he will be.
Even the kid from last year that went to Missouri is already so big he is playing a hybrid TE now.
This isn't about RSJ on the field, I guarantee this, this is about other people starting to get in his ear. Any time Oregon suddenly gets in the picture, a red flag always goes up in my mind. I'm not worried about losing out on a top WR prospect, I would rather play it safe and possibly go after another top prospect. Also keep in mind we have other receivers in our system with his body type what we need is receivers with speed that can stretch the defense.

I can't believe that some of you guys are already making excuses about RSJ, that's ridiculous. Of course we want him!!! If he grows, play him somewhere else. The kid is a natural athlete. Lets just move on, this one stings, hopefully Devon Allen, Robbie Rhodes, or whoever we get as a WR pans out.

Not making excuses, it is what it is. There is only two possible reasons for doing what they did.
1. He is becoming a circus and the staff wants no part of it.
2. There is fire with this smoke and this recruitment is starting to get dirty.
But you are correct, we need to just move on.

Supposedly, he only wants to play WR... and might also want to play basketball. Also, someone mentioned that he is related to Eric Dickerson (Fmr. SMU running back), and that man absolutely hates Texas which means it would be even harder to get him.

Per 24/7, Texas has reached out to blue-chip WR Laquon Treadwell of Crete, Illinois. He mentioned that the staff called him this afternoon and he plans on returning the call tomorrow. He was unofficially visiting Ole Miss last weekend so he's had the opportunity to see the Horns up close already. According to the report, he's not supposed to be making a decision any time soon, so Texas has an opportunity to get in the race.

Quotes from WR LaQuon Treadwell (OrangeBloods):
"They (Texas) called my school today and talked to my offensive coordinator," Treadwell said. "Once I got home, they called and I talked to the wide receivers coach (Darrell Wyatt) for about 30 minutes. It was a long, nice talk about everything. We introduced ourselves and he just talked to me about Texas."
"Texas has a high-powered offense. Their running backs set up the deep passes on play-action passes. They can slow it down, speed it up. They have a great offense, they threw a bunch of deep passes and let their wide receivers make plays," Treadwell said.
"We kind of talked about visits. He said he wouldn't be calling me for nothing," Treadwell said. "I saw the offense last week, but he wants me to get down there. He said to talk to my mom, if I decide to give them a chance, he's going to recruit me hard. He said to talk to my mom, if she's okay with it, I'll call him back tomorrow and he's going to recruit me hard."
"It's Texas. What's not to like about Texas? It's been a great program for a long time, since Vince Young was there," Treadwell said. "They're high in the ranks of great programs. That's kind of big on my mind. They usually don't recruit out of state out Texas, so that's big for me."

"UCLA is definitely No. 1 right now," Allen said on Wednesday evening. "I didn't really expect for it to be that great. I really enjoyed being there. UCLA is the top as of now, but that could change when I take my official to Texas. I haven't been to Texas yet."

No. Allen was contacted around the time Rhodes committed to Baylor and the staff has been recruiting him for a while. I guess you could consider Treadwell somewhat of a "Plan B" for RSJ even though they're different players and RSJ's future at WR is unclear (still would love to have him). Treadwell is definitely a WR.

CB Cole Luke made an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend for the Michigan game. Here are some quotes from an anonymous source on his recruitment (24/7):
"All I know right now is that Notre Dame is still in the top three (with Oklahoma and Texas)," he said. "I won't know anything more until I visit Oklahoma (Oct. 26, playing Notre Dame) and Texas (Oct. 5, playing West Virginia) to get an overall feel of all the schools."
"Everything is still all Texas from the sound of it," said a source close to Luke's recruitment. "He had a good time at Notre Dame with Davonte (Neal) and enjoyed getting to see how they operate on game day, but I wouldn't say he was blown away. He did have a good visit though, so don't get me wrong there either."
"He's really looking forward to it all (the official visit to Texas)," the source said. "They're going to have so many high profile kids in, so I think the coaching staff will go all out. With both teams looking to be top 10, and with it being West Virginia's first time in Austin, Cole has mentioned he thinks it's going to be a great game. He knows that their (Texas) DBs will be put to the test by Geno Smith, so he's anxious to see how they respond and what Coach (Duane) Akina does. Like I said, he's really looking forward to it."
"I'm about 90-percent sure right now (he will pick Texas)," they said. "That number might be even higher after the visit."

From ESPN...
CFB's overrated, underrated teams
Florida could go unbeaten in SEC; TCU's defense will drop; more projections
This season I have been giving you my bold predictions on ESPN Insider every Thursday, but in addition to those picks this week, I wanted to provide you with my most overrated and underrated teams one quarter of the way through the season. In some cases, these teams are being overvalued or undervalued when it comes to overall ranking in the polls, and in other cases their statistical rankings on either offense or defense are being artificially inflated by misleading starts.
We'll begin with the three underrated teams, before tackling my three overrated teams.
http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/ncaa/med/251.gif
1. Texas Longhorns (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/251/texas-longhorns) (No. 12 in AP poll)
Reason: The QB play is better than you think.
Coming off back-to-back disappointing seasons, the Longhorns were my No. 1 dark-horse national title contender coming into this season and so far they have lived up to that billing with an undefeated start and blowout wins against each of their first three opponents.
Coming into the season everyone knew about the talent they had on the defensive side of the ball, with stars at defensive end in Alex Okafor (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/481802/alex-okafor)and Jackson Jeffcoat (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/501940/jackson-jeffcoat) to go along with a secondary that I ranked as the best in the country. The question mark on the team was at quarterback.
After three games, that perceived weakness has turned into a strength, as David Ash (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/511262/david-ash) is completing 76 percent of his passes and, more important, has yet to throw an interception. This last point is particularly important, as turnovers have plagued Longhorns quarterbacks in each of the past two seasons. Throw in a solid 1-2 punch at running back with Malcolm Brown (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/512837/malcolm-brown) andJoe Bergeron (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/511263/joe-bergeron) and you have a Texas offense that resembles those potent units when Vince Young and Colt McCoy were lined up under center. In its last game against Ole Miss, Texas ran and passed for more than 300 yards on the road for the first time in school history.
This week the Longhorns get their first big test of the season at Oklahoma State, but I will call for them to get by in that one. When looking at the rest of their schedule, they get key games against West Virginia and TCU at home and Oklahoma at a neutral site. Realistically, the Horns will be favored in at least eight of their last nine games, and in light of Oklahoma's underwhelming performance to date, Texas is now my favorite to win the Big 12. The Horns have a solid chance at going 12-0 and spending their holidays in Miami.

Basically it said
-He is 75% healthy and day to day.
-His mother is not doing too well and will have surgery soon
-He received hate mail from Penn State fans after their kicker missed all those field goals vs Virginia where they lost by 1. I guess they don't understand why he transferred.

Quotes on DT A'Shawn Robinson's recruitment (24/7):
“I don’t think anyone really knows what A’Shawn is going to do,” said a source close to the Arlington Heights program. “In fact, I’m not sure if A’Shawn knows what A’Shawn is going to do. He just isn’t a big talker like some kids. He doesn’t always let you know what exactly is going on. As you know, he went to the Alabama game in Arlington, then of course FSU this past weekend. I know he’s spoken with some members of the coaching staff about taking other visits. He likes USC and a couple of others too.”
“Just about all the top schools still come after him,” the source told Hookem.com. “USC might be one of the biggest. They are really interested in him. Alabama and Florida State are too, as you can see. He’s always sort of listened to what the Trojans have said though. I always thought if anyone had a chance to pull him away, it would be them.”
“A’Shawn has mentioned it before,” he explained. “But now, it’s seeming like it’s becoming more of a real possibility rather than just kicking the idea around. It wouldn’t surprise me the least bit to see USC and Alabama get those visits.”
“Well the good news for Texas is that he’ll see Texas again,” said the source. “He’ll take a visit down there, probably more than once. He still is committed to Texas and really likes the Longhorns. He hasn’t told anyone otherwise to my knowledge. Maybe going down there after seeing the others will only help their cause and make him realize why he committed to there in the first place.”
“They’re doing everything to can to make sure he’s ready academically,” the source said. “As of right now, A’Shawn isn’t even taking part in the usual athletic period. Instead he’s taking a foreign language class. German I think it is. He just needs to do a little making up in the classroom is all.”

Yeah, the home crowd hasn't been loud at all the last few years. Being a guy that was at a bunch of home games the last few years, losing at home to UCLA, Baylor and Iowa State does not help in generating crowd noise. If we are competitive against West Virginia rest assured it will be a loud and a blast. The fans have serious pent up demand for two good teams and a competitive game.

I changed him to a "maybe" because the pay sites have said as much. I don't think he's necessarily wavering but it's just that nobody knows what he's going to do. He's always extremely tough to get a hold of and rarely does interviews so any information on him is usually from secondary sources. Not that it's a bad thing but the kid just marches to the beat of his own drum. The public doesn't know that he's making a trip until he shows up.

A couple of new names to learn, per OrangeBloods. There was a rumor going around today that Texas had offered JUCO WR Quantavius Leslie of Hinds CC in Raymond, MS. He said Bo Davis called last week and extended an offer. While he's metioned being a solid LSU verbal, he did say he would consider making a visit to Austin to have a look around. He originally committed to West Virginia out of high school. A second JUCO WR Quadarias Mireles of the same community college, who is currently committed to Ole Miss, is also claiming an offer from Texas.

We're really desperate at WR I guess if we are going after two Jucos and Treadwell.
Laquon Treadwell did say on twitter that he's getting a visit from "Hookem" on Friday, I'm guessing he means a Texas coach and not our mascot.

24/7 reporting that things continue to move forward with JUCO OL Desmond Harrison of Contra Costa CC in San Pablo, CA. He's taking an official visit to NC State this weekend but it sounds like he's in the process of discussing a visit to Austin with the UT staff. He does have Texas ties as he was living in the Fort Bend Marshall area up until his freshman year in high school.
I think Searels wants to close the 2013 class with an interior prospect and a true tackle.

He is now scheduled to visit campus on December 7th. I believe that will be the team's banquet weekend. Texas is also looking at Harrison's teammate, OL Damien Parris. AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas football recruits in attendance for the Longhorns’ 48-45 loss to West Virginia got some extra entertainment out of their night, courtesy of the Mountaineers.
Late in the game Saturday night, a feud began between West Virginia players, including quarterback Geno Smith, and a group of Texas commits and recruits.
“Geno and a few other guys, they were turning around and punking us. I’ve never seen that before,” said Texas wide receiver recruit Jacorey Warrick(Houston/Cypress Falls).
Warrick said he believed the war of words began after Smith fumbled in the fourth quarter, his second of the night.
During games, visiting Texas recruits and their family and friends are seated on the east side of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, behind the visiting team’s bench. When Smith returned to the sidelines, the Heisman Trophy frontrunner heard some jeers from the fans seated directly above him.
“There was this one dad who was yelling, “Geno! Geno!” after the turnover,” Warrick said. “He was like, ‘Way to handle the ball, Geno!’ That’s when it kind of started. Geno turned around and said, ‘Have you ever played football before?’ It was crazy.”
Some trash-talking between the recruits and West Virginia players ensued.
“The West Virginia players were talking trash and we were talking trash back,” said Katy (Texas) Seven Lakes offensive line recruit Caleb Benenoch. “They were yelling, throwing the horns down, talking a lot of smack.”
No Texas recruit was more vocal during the feud than A'Shawn Robinson. The Fort Worth (Texas) Arlington Heights defensive tackle commit was sitting in the front row on Saturday night and had plenty to say to Smith.
“West Virginia was talking noise to us, and A’Shawn was defending Texas,” said Texas commit Jake Raulerson (Celina, Texas/Celina).
Before attending Saturday’s game, Robinson had raised some doubts about his pledge to Texas after taking an official visit to Florida State last month.
When sitting among his fellow commits, though, he made his allegiances clear.
“That’s a good sign,” Raulerson said. “He said ‘Geno, I’ll see you next year.’ He was having a great time. I asked him if he was going to come to Texas. He said, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it.’”
Unfortunately for Robinson, Smith is a senior. He and the Mountaineers got the last laugh and earned the victory, but they didn’t earn many admirers among the section of Texas recruits.
“Not a fan of west Virginia's players, no class at all, almost embarrassing,” Texas receiver commit Jake Oliver (Dallas/Jesuit) wrote on his Twitter account after the game.
Added Warrick: “I didn’t like it. Of all the games I’ve been to at any school, we usually sit behind the visiting team. If something is said to them, they usually don’t respond or anything. That kind of caught me off-guard.”
Though several recruits said they thought the back-and-forth jawing was harmless and funny, the future Longhorns now have some extra motivation when Texas travels to West Virginia in 2013.

“I’ve been knowing their coaching staff for a really long time,” Collins said. “I have a really good relationship with Bo Davis, [Duane] Akina, Darrell Wyatt, Mack Brown. There’s just really good things they’ve got going on at Texas.”
"It's been good, just to know that I have the opportunity to play at the next level," Collins said. "Just getting recruited was a real good, fun process and everything. I had a coach helping me the whole way, [Livingston secondary] coach [Stevie] Moore, he was helping me the whole time. Quotes from 2014 S Edward Paris after his trip to Austin for the West Virginia game (24/7):
“My thought was it was an exciting game and great atmosphere,” Paris said Sunday afternoon. “It was exciting for both halves, the atmosphere was intense, it was a nice night for football with a cool breeze, and it was exciting.”
“I look at the positions, more than the game itself. How are they playing their scheme," he said. "I watched both secondaries, since both have offered me. I watched the corners and nickels, because I think I can cover and play the nickel.”
“They (coaches) just tried to get me on board with the program. I told them I like their scheme," he said. "I like man, in your face coverage and I like how Texas plays.”
“If I get tickets, I will go to the Texas-Oklahoma game. I’ll sit on the Oklahoma side as a guest of the Sooners because they are the home team," he said. "I went to the Texas-Oklahoma State game two weeks ago, too. I’m going to the Alabama-LSU game November 3rd after that.”
“LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma State and Alabama are recruiting me really hard. Alabama sends a lot of mail, like a lot of mail," he said. "I think Oregon will also offer me soon. It seems like some schools are also afraid to offer me. It’s going to be hard to look at narrowing things.”

Quotes from the coach of JUCO OL Desmond Harrison who Texas offered last Friday (24/7):
“He’s very excited,” said Carter. “Desmond told me it’s a dream come true for him actually. He’s originally from Texas, has family in Texas and has always kept tabs on Texas, so it’s a really big deal for him. He’s been ecstatic about it actually.”
“We actually have quite a few connections to the Texas staff,” explained Carter. “My defensive coordinator and Coach (Bo) Davis were frat brothers. My offensive line coach played for Coach (Bryan) Harsin at Boise State. So those two guys let them know about Desmond originally. Coach (Bruce) Chambers then stopped by when he was out this way and saw him. He really liked what he saw so he told Coach Davis and Davis stayed in contact. Then Coach (Stacey) Searels got to see him and liked what he saw. Soon after, they offered him over the phone.”
“We genuinely both feel comfortable with them (Texas),” said Carter. “I told Desmond he needs to find a place that fits him both on and off the field. He needed to find a place that he has a great relationship with the coaching staff and that’s what he feels with Texas. We both believe that Coach Davis would watch over him and that the whole Texas staff would guide him to do what’s best for him. We really just all feel good about Texas. Plus, you have Coach Mack Brown, who’s a coaching legend. We love Coach Brown, too. That whole staff is just great.”
“His mom lives in North Carolina,” he explained. “North Carolina State has offered him. If he went there, he would be very close to her, which is a big deal obviously. That’s one reason he took an official there, is to see the program and see her. Otherwise, he would have been in Texas for West Virginia. Besides them, he’s always said to me that USC is another program he’d like to hear from. They haven’t offered yet, but are showing serious interest. I think he really loves Texas though and genuinely likes USC. Like I said, Texas was a dream come true for him.”
“Right now he holds nearly 30 offers,” said Carter. “Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Arkansas, California, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Boise State, North Carolina State, Rutgers, Kansas, Iowa State and plenty more have all offered.”
“He has quite a few visits planned,” Carter told Hookem.com. “Besides North Carolina State, he’ll visit Iowa State on November 23rd, Arizona State on November 30th and Texas on December 7th. There’s a chance he could visit Oklahoma, USC, Arkansas, Texas Tech or Oklahoma State as well sometime, but that hasn’t been set up yet.”

OL Caleb Benenoch's thoughts on his unofficial visit to Texas (24/7):
“The game was out of control,” exclaimed Benenoch. “It was awesome. It was absolutely amazing. I don’t know if DKR is always like that, but it’s the best I’ve ever seen.”
“I’d say that they (Texas) are my leader,” Benenoch told Hookem.com. “It’s tough to separate the schools, but that game atmosphere was awesome. My top four now is Texas, Baylor, OU and then UCLA in that order. Baylor and OU are kind of tied though.”
“I think the offense did very well for the most part,” Benenoch said. “David Ash played extremely well too. One thing I thought was that they could have run blocked better down the stretch, especially in the red zone. That cost them some points. But overall they did well.”
“I might go back to some schools,” he said when asked about another Texas visit. “I don’t know yet though. Nothing is set.”
“I’m just waiting to visit UCLA,” Benenoch explained. “I’ll make my decision after that. I don’t want to wait until signing day.”

Update on OL/DL Andrew Billings after his unofficial visit for the West Virginia game (24/7):
“The visit went great,” Billings said. “It was very loud. Some of the fans told me it was the loudest they have heard it in years. I thought the game was a very good one too. It was a hard game for both teams and both teams played hard.”
“The atmosphere was ‘Go Texas’ 100-percent all the time,” Billings told Hookem.com. “The fans pretty much screamed the whole time. The crowd was standing the whole game too. I think the only other game I’ve seen come close to that was Baylor versus Oklahoma last season and that was a good game.”
“My decision will come soon,” he said. “Very soon actually. I’m really close to making it. I’ll decide between Texas, Baylor and TCU. It will probably be by the end of the month at the latest. It could be possibly even sooner than that.”

2014 S Jamal Adams comments on Saturday night in Austin (24/7):
“The whole thing was great, especially for it to be my first game in Austin to watch Texas,” Adams told Hookem.com. “It was an action packed, couldn’t stop each other, offensive shootout type of game. It was real fun to watch and it was a great game. They might have lost, but it was still fun.”
“The stadium was loud last night,” he said. “Very, very loud actually. That atmosphere was amazing. I also spoke to some people who have been to other games and they told me that is the loudest it’s ever been, so I definitely went on a good night. It was just really loud and the crowd was into it all night.”
“I’ve been to two other college games,” explained Adams. “I’ve seen Alabama and Michigan play in Arlington and I saw Kansas State and Oklahoma. The Texas game last night was, without a doubt, the most fun I’ve ever had at a game. It was the best game and best atmosphere I’ve seen. I really had a good time.”
“I thought they played really good during certain parts of the game,” said Adams. “I’m certain they’ll continue to improve though. They had some big time sacks and got a lot of pressure on Geno Smith. There were times when they needed a big stop, but just couldn’t get it.”
“I thought the offense played great,” he said. “They put up a ton of points and were running and passing very easily. They too had a couple of mistakes, a couple of big ones actually, like the bad snap to Ash and the missed field goal, but they definitely held their own. If it wouldn’t have been for those two things, they would have won. Just some mental errors got them down and you can’t do that against a great team like West Virginia.”

I wanted to talk for a minute about the Longhorn defense. Henry Melton had a very good point and quite frankly, I get tired of watching this defense play game in and game out as well. Okafor and Jeffcoat are playing lights out as expected but then again, this defense was supposed to be our strong point this season. The only startes that we lost on defense from last year were Robinson and Acho for the most part. How in the world can our defense regress that bad with only the loss of two linebackers? Diggs and Byndom were lights out last year and even Vaccaro was a beast that tried to knock out every receiver that came his way. Now, they are all getting beat and Vaccaro looks SOFT AS HELL this season. His draft stock has got to be taking a huge hit. So my question is this...Is our defense really overrated or is Manny Diaz the problem? I know he is young and did great last year, but there is no way imaginable that a defense so strong can be so bad this fast. Just wanted some thoughts. I know I'm venting but DAMN I love some Texas D year in and year out. This year is hurts me to watch them on TV. They have their flashes of dominance but they are far from consistent as they should be.
stretch
10-09-2012, 11:13 PM
I think Diaz is a lot of the problem.
Fundamentals seem to have completely gone out the window. And there are a lot of times where huge runs are a result of a massive gap due to a blitz being called and linebackers shooting through gaps that have no running back in them.
They need to cut back on all the blitzing crap, and start just playing more base defense, allow the defenders to read and react. Simplify the offense a bit for a young LB crew.
To cut him a little slack, they have played some pretty solid running teams through. Then a WVU team that has an incredibly prolific pass offense, which the Horns looked quite intent on containing (held them under 300 yards passing), and didn't pay much attention to the run.
UTHorns34
10-09-2012, 11:17 PM
I agree. I think alot of times, Diaz tries to get too cute with all the blitzing and this creates problems for the young linebackers. I still don't understand how our secondary keeps getting bashed week in and week out.
ThePop

Diaz is the problem, but not because of his schemes IMO. I'm basically going to repeat what I heard Jeff Howe and Rod Babers say on the Longhorn Roundup podcast, because I agree with it. It seems that the players are not prepared for the offenses we are facing. Our defense knows knows our gameplan against the offense, but they don't know what the offense is going to be doing. Sometimes you see them panicking before the ball is snapped as if they haven't seen that play before. Guys like Vaccaro are constantly instructing players on where to be and what they're supposed to be doing. I expect a guy like Steve Edmond to mess up here and there but it's 5 games into the season now and they should have learned a lot by now.
Maybe Diaz isn't preparing them? Maybe they're not watching enough film on the opponent? Rod Babers mentioned how West Virginia NEVER runs the ball in the redzone, something a team should figure out just by watching a little film, yet we had players trying to prevent the run every time in the red zone.
The podcast mentioned a play where there was an uncovered receiver, and Adrian Phillips and Kenny Vaccaro were yelling at Edmond (who looked like he was going to blitz) to drop back and cover the guy. Both Phillips and Vaccaro called a timeout right as the ball was about to be snapped rather than leave the receiver open. Turns out, Edmond was never going to blitz on that play and was going to cover the guy. This is an example of miscommunication and trust issues with this defense, there is a lack of chemistry there.
Just hope Jordan Hicks returns soon, because when we had Hicks the only major problem with this defense was tackling. Without him, all sorts of problems have come up.
P.S.
Carrington Byndom has been abysmal this year. You can't explain that.

Update on 2014 CB/S Tony Brown after his visit to Austin last weekend (OrangeBloods). His sister, Bealoved, is taking her official visit (for track) to LSU this weekend and Tony will be accompanying her.
"It was a really good game, a record crowd. It was really hyped up," Brown said. "It was a good atmosphere, good game overall so I liked it a lot."
"It was loud. I don't know how they could hear any audibles on the field," Brown said. "I got to talk to the coaches after the game. We were just touching base. They were asking me about my dad, telling me I'd fit in perfectly with their press coverage. My mom talked to coach (Mack) Brown's wife for a little bit."
"It boosts them a little bit," Brown said. "But I'm really trying to stay neutral with my dad out of the recruiting process (Brown's father has been hospitalized since last month)."
"I'd rather play in atmospheres like (Texas-West Virginia) than a quiet, modest crowd," Brown said. "The bigger the stage, I feel like the better I play. The better the receiver I'm matched up against, the better I play."

Hicks is definitely more important at this point in time.
I have a feeling Gray is going to make some big plays happen again, like he did against WVU. Hopefully he learned from his mistake in his lazy blocking last week, because arguably that's the play that really screwed UT over, even worse than the bad snap or missed FG.

Sooo... The Red River Bloodbath was once again a embarrassment to say the least. Last year I was Irate after the game. I blew up on how that should almost never happen to a Texas team with a top 5 recruiting class every year, the biggest pond to fish for recruits in the nation, and enough resources to support 10 universities. But after seeing it happen again this year i guess i didnt overreact. Something has to change and it might have to involve our beloved Mack. I Love Mack, but maybe its time. Use those resources to bring in a high profile coach. Can u imagine what a Nick Saban would do in the State of Texas at UT? Im not suggesting we throw a boat load of money at him but i will also say that I wouldnt be upset. I really just wanted to paint a picture of how it could and should be at UT. A loss like this scares me when it comes to recruiting, Im sure this has some effect on how these kids view the program. I can guarantee that some kid on saturday afternoon, after seeing the game, had some reluctance about Texas. And it wasnt because we loss, it was the manner in which we loss to a rival school that we should have been pumped up to play. But hopefully TFloss can provide us with some type of good news on the recruiting landscape, or any good news really.

We'll definitely keep track of any new coaching hires much like in 2010. It may be the only thing we have to look forward to.
Judging by the players' body language on Saturday, it seems the coaches have lost them. I don't think a match-up with Baylor could be more ill-timed than the one coming up this weekend. They'll be out for blood after laying an egg against TCU. I'm definitely experiencing a 2010 type feeling right now and it will be worse if UT loses to Baylor three times in a row.

Chip Kelly's shady recruiting has been in part due to the people around him. People in Texas won't let him hire street agents. I really like him, I hope we can hire him. My second option is Shaw and if we want to gamble I say, get Kirby Smart. Thats just my realistic wishful thinking. Ive always wondered what will happen with our recruiting class if we changed our head coach. This is one recruiting class that I would not mind a bunch of guys decomitting.
