According to 24/7, we offered OLB Deoundrei Davis.
I really like that offer! He has a very intriguing video on hudl, but I can't find it (i'm on my phone)

Can anybody tell me about Mike Mitchell? Is he a good football player or just a phenomenal athlete? All I know is that he's a good athlete with a brother who might be the best basketball player at his age..

Who do u think gets a offer for JD2?

Also from 24/7, TE Durham Smythe and his family are supposed to make a decision early this week whether or not they want to visit Stanford at the beginning of March. It seems there has been some indecision there. After JD1 he was leaning towards not taking the trip, then he backed off a bit and still wanted to go and now it feels like he's going to decide against it. I put his decision timeline as "before the UT spring game" because I figured he'd make that trip being the son of a doctor and his emphasis on education. All the better if he doesn't.

That is odd on not recruiting Wilson, but maybe the staff 1) feels there was something more there to him not going to JD1 and 2) feeling better about a prospect emerging during senior season they can grab.

Just wanted to point out that DB Antwuan Davis of Bastrop has picked up offers from Alabama and Notre Dame recently. I think he's being slow-played right now until Texas has the opportunity to evaluate him in spring practice and see how he's recovered from his back injury. One of my favorites at CB.

I don't interpret it as the UT staff seeing red flags or getting bad vibes, but they simply feel it's in their best interest to devote time to other prospects. It's not a guarantee that they don't make a late push for him in the future (especially if LSU doesn't offer). We all knew it was an uphill battle even before A&M got involved.

I wonder if the Texas staff feels he's an LSU lock when offered so they didn't waste their time, instead looking at other guys who are more realistic.

Thats a interesting situation. I think this offer definitely slims Hughes chances of a offer, especially if Davis commits. But then again, i dont see Mack not offering eventually considering his history of offering family members and the darius James effect that u mentioned.

Great news from 24/7. DE Torrodney Prevot says he will be skipping any track obligations he has on Saturday so that he can make the trip to Austin. Out of all of the guys that will be in attendance at JD2 (other than Perkins), he has the greatest chance of receiving an offer and I'm confident he'll get one. He's good enough to end up in the Rivals100, imo. It's been reported that Texas was his favorite school growing up so things are looking good.

Re: Cole Luke, he said he in a Rivals interview that his family couldn't afford to make distant unofficial visits. Akina needs to visit his high school when permissible, and get him down for an official visit. It's a finance thing, not a Luke doesn't like Texas thing.

Damn, thats pretty huge. Not that surprising considering that he supposedly was turned off to Texas because he felt he wasnt a top priority. Well, Bill introduced me to Maurice Porter and he is a beast.

Porter, Perkins and James should be the top in state OL priorities. Porter is going to blow up. People around the FB Marshall program believe this kid is going to be a special, special player. Searels choices are pretty clear, offer Porter, go JUCO or OOS.

I don't like the move James to tackle option. Texas must get a difference maker at C. 247 reiterated today talk around the program that James could play C for Texas right now. Elite C prospect.

I like Davis a lot. You want kids coming up as upperclassmen rather than leveling off. I'm good with Davis as the OLB take. Probably not room for Mitchell. I think Hughes can be picked up late if the numbers change.

Horns expected to land Sealy recruit on Wednesday

By Jeff Howe (http://www.statesman.com/sports/longhorns/horns-expected-to-land-sealy-recruit-on-wednesday-2188799.html?service=popup&authorContact=2188799&authorContactField=0) HOOKEM.COM
Published: 7:41 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012

Wednesday is decision day for Ricky Seals-Jones, Sealy High School's four-star recruit. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound dynamic athlete will make his college choice known early that afternoon. Texas is the overwhelming favorite.

Seals-Jones, the No. 14-ranked recruit on the American-Statesman's initial Fabulous 55 list of the state's top prospects, was considering an announcement late last week, but decided to move his decision to this week.

The Longhorns received four commitments last week, after their first junior day — Dallas Jesuit wide receiver Jake Oliver, Fort Worth Arlington Heights offensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson, Whitewright quarterback Tyrone Swoopes and Arlington Martin running back Kyle Hicks.

For any Texas fans feeling uneasy about Seals-Jones, they shouldn't. LSU has been mentioned as a distant second, and the Longhorns' Feb. 12 junior day visit was a home run both for Seals-Jones and his family, sources close to his recruitment said.

Unless Texas picks up a commitment from another player before Wednesday, expect Seals-Jones to be No. 6.

Other recruiting updates:

• Robinson, who committed to Texas last Thursday, says he's not planning on taking any more recruiting visits.

"I see the class of 2011 and the class of 2012, and then I look at what our class can be," Robinson said. "I feel like I can go to Texas and be a part of a national championship. Texas has everything I want."

• Even though Texas has a commitment from Hicks, don't expect the Longhorns to give up on trying to land DeSoto running back Dontre Wilson, the 5-10, 165-pound speedster who's No. 16 on the Fabulous 55.

As reported last week, Texas' first junior day was considered a great visit for Wilson. Another key for Texas is the return of head coach Claude Mathis to DeSoto.

Mathis, who has four former players on the Texas roster, is a huge reason why the DeSoto pipeline has been opened to Texas. He had taken an assistant coaching position at the University of Houston, but recently decided to return to DeSoto after a couple of months on the job.

Wilson visited Oklahoma State last weekend, and plans to visit Oregon during spring break; the Ducks are considered Texas' biggest competition in the fight for Wilson.

• Harker Heights lineman Darius James visited TCU last week — the same day that four Horned Frogs players were arrested on drug-related charges.
Nothing has changed with James' timeline. He'll visit Oklahoma on March 3, then LSU, and then Alabama before he makes his decision. All signs, though, point to Texas as being the team to beat; the Longhorns have long had him as one of the top priorities for their class.

• Among Texas A&M's junior day players last weekend were six recruits that Texas has serious interest in — Belton tight end Durham Smythe, Dallas Bishop Dunne offensive lineman Ishmael Wilson, Dallas Kimball defensive tackle Justin Manning, Houston Cypress Falls wide receiver Jacorey Warrick and Red Oak tight end Jeremiah Gaines.

The Aggies ended up getting six commitments, but only one from that group of Longhorns recruits — Wilson, the No. 11-rated prospect on the Fabulous 55.

Wilson was unable to make it to Texas' junior day on Feb. 12, and thus did not receive an offer. The Longhorns reportedly will not recruit him further.

“I’ve talked to coach [Oscar] Giles and [Manny] Diaz over Facebook and they sound really excited to see me,” he said. “I went there before for a camp in the summer, but I didn’t get to explore it all. I’d love to see what the whole campus has to offer.”

“To be honest, no,” Hollins Jr. said. “I don’t feel totally sure I’ll receive one (a UT offer). But I hope so.”

“I almost pulled the trigger (at the A&M Junior Day), but my father and I talked about it and it wasn’t what I really wanted,” he said. “Now that I’m going to Texas this weekend, I know exactly what I’m looking for.”

I expect big things from Whaley - for him to move to D-Line and get on the field so quickly with the depth we have and to be making plays - all as a transitioned running back. I certainly think he ends up on NFL roster.

“I just knew when I went there (for the Feb. 12 junior day) it was the right school for me,” Seals-Jones said shortly after he made his commitment on Wednesday afternoon.

“I sat down and talked with my parents after we got back from the junior day,” he said. “We talked about it and felt like that was a great place to go to and try to win a national championship.”

“Talking to the coaches, the players, looking at the campus, it dawned on me and felt like it was home,” he said.

“I talked about trying to play receiver, but whatever I have to do to help the team win I’ll do it,” he said.

“They were all in there mixed up until I went in there for Texas’ junior day and felt like that was the best school for me.”

“I’ve been looking forward to it my whole life, really,” Smith said. “That’s my dream school (Texas). If I do get the offer, it’s going to feel like a dream come true. If I don’t, I just have to work harder I guess.”

“I come from a family where you don’t do something like that,” he said. “I want to make sure when I commit it’s going to be for a lifetime and something I won’t regret.”

Notes:

Greg Daniels will be a TE only.
Whaley will play both DT and DE in the spring due to Jeffcoats injury.
Moss moved to FB
Mack still not naming the #1 QB. Says we need 2 QBs.
Mack not getting in the hype of our Defense due to the loss of our leadership.
Surprisingly, Mack says we need to force more turnovers.
Big emphasis on the passing game this spring.
Will Russ will be the punter.
Ben Pruitt will work on kickoffs and field goals until Nick Jordan comes in.
Ash will work on punting.
Several of our coaches had head coach opportunities and some Pro jobs as well.
Goodwin, Evans, and Monroe will miss a practice or two due to track.
New kickoff rule: Kick off from the 35, touchbacks will have the ball placed at the 25.
New Ricky Williams statue!!!! Next to Earl's.
Poehlman will still work at TE, along with G and T.
MJ McFarland doing great, only improvement needed is blocking.
With Hawkins here, Hopkins will play Guard at least for today.
Mike Davis was discouraged in the fall, now doing great, working hard. (Good to hear).
We will wait for fall for the first Depth Chart.
Brown, Bergeron, and Shipley are good to go.
There is potential for Onyegbule to grow into a TE.

James — a four-star recruit, who holds 15 Division I offers after receiving one from Florida early Wednesday — isn't close to making a bigger decision any time soon but listed Alabama, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas among his Top 5, in no particular order. James is scheduled to attend Junior Days at Oklahoma on March 3 and at LSU on March 17.

Vonn Bell is an elite player that has flown under the radar because he hasn't gone to any camps or events. Expect him to blow up on Rivals and other sites once people go out and watch him. He has offers from everybody in the SEC including 'Bama, Arky, Tenn, etc and they are all strictly based on watching him on film.

Some quotes from S Vonn Bell of Rossville, GA. Sounds like he is a native Texan (Dallas) but moved away at around age six.

"I just got off the phone with him," Bell told us shortly after hanging up with Akina. "He was telling me about how he's the DB coach, who they have in the NFL, things like that. It was good. We're just trying to get to know each other right now."

"I know a lot about (Texas). Everything's good. They're a Big 12 school that's on my list. I have an offer from another Big 12 school (Oklahoma State) and now Texas, so we'll see what happens."

"He was talking to me about me seeing the campus and meeting everyone there. I just have to talk to everybody to see," Bell said. "We're going to stay in touch, build a relationship. They're not going to offer many DBs, so we'll just have to see what happens."

"I don't really have any leaders. I'm just going to wait until I visit everybody, see what they have to offer, talk to my family and see what happens," Bell said.

Quotes from ATH Stanvon Taylor of Tulsa, OK:

"(On Wednesday), one of my coaches called me into his classroom. I had been hearing from other people that Texas was interested. But I hadn't heard anything since yesterday," Taylor said. "I talked to coach Akina and he was telling me he watched film, liked how I play and he's highly interested in me."

"I like the fact that they win. I've only been playing football since sixth grade. Since I started watching them, I know they have good program there," Taylor said. "I have heard from people who are older who took visits there, it's a really nice place. I had always been thinking about them, just waiting for them to come up where they'd be interested. Now they are so I definitely want to get down there for a visit."

"He (Demarco Cobbs) was always around my school. He talked to me, gave me advice on anything. I talked to him about three weeks ago and he told me Texas was interested in me," Taylor said.

"My mom, she doesn't want me going too far. I want to go to school around here somewhere. Texas isn't too far. It's not very far away," Taylor said. "And it's a powerhouse. I want to go to a school that's good at football, takes it seriously, where I can get better and hopefully get ready for the next level."

“I will be visiting UT this weekend,” Warrick said Thursday night. “I had a track meet the same day, but I’m going to Austin with my parents, little brother and little sister.”

“I talked a few coaches," he said. "I’ve talked to Coach (Darrell) Wyatt before and I actually talked to Coach (Oscar) Giles today. They want to get me up to see them and sit down.”

“They are recruiting me more as a wide receiver, but also as an athlete that could play on defense at cornerback,” he said.

“I don’t know if it will matter yet. I know I want to play on offense, but I also know I want to win. I want to help a team win, but would prefer to do it on offense,” Warrick said.

“I’ve actually been thinking about that (committing to Texas if offered)," he said. "I know I won’t commit on the spot. I will just have to be real sure about what I want to do.”

What great news to wake up to when it seemed like we'd have to wait a few weeks for more offers. Mack sent a message to Davis last night on Facebook around 10 p.m. with an official offer. Here are some quotes:

"They offered me last night. I slept on it, prayed on it and my heart and body told me this is the place for me," Davis said. "Meeting coach Brown, coach (Manny) Diaz and coach (Oscar) Giles, that just made me feel welcome. The whole Texas staff did."

"Getting my degree from Texas, being from Texas, being a Texas Longhorn has always been a dream of mine and now I'm making my dream come true."

"Texas has been my team since I was two years old when I started watching football. Being able to play for them, that's always a dream for me. They made it possible by offering me and now it's a dream come true."

"I feel like I can bring a great deal to the defense, have an immediate impact. My speed and my aggressiveness are my strengths," Davis said. "And I'm a ballhawk. Wherever ball is, that's where I'll be."

"I'm solid with my commitment to Texas. That's where I want to be," he said. "It's a good feeling. It's an even better feeling knowing that it's the school that I've always wanted to go to, the Texas Longhorns. I want to bring that national championship back to Texas, my home state."

If we actually get Vonn Bell on campus that'll be big! I personally like Bell, Cravens, and Luke better than our in state prospects. If we actually get Vonn Bell on campus that'll be big! I personally like Bell, Cravens, and Luke better than our in state prospects. I think the coaches are gonna get a feel for these 3 guys before they offer the in-states. And in respect to the in-states, they arent to far behind the OOS talent wise.

I think Texas should stay on Luke until he tells Akina no. Maurice Smith is a nice player, but he's not Cole Luke.

Texas should have a better idea of where they stand with Harris, Bell and Cravens after the summer. They can only get one, and they should focus on one and move forward in the fall.

I think Akina will maintain contact with Maurice Smith and Kameron Miles. I think Texas can pick up both late if the OOS options don't work out.

From Randy Riggs of the Statesman on Perkins:

Perkins, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 2 tackle prospect in the country and the nation's No. 20 overall recruit, could not be reached for comment Saturday night. But his Lake Highlands coach, Scott Smith , said the visit went well.

"I can tell you there was a big smile on his face," Smith said. "He had a really great time, let's just put it that way."

Perkins — who also has visited Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Baylor, and has offers from many other schools — has said he would not take any visits after Texas. Smith said there's no timetable for Perkins to make a decision.

"I told him to think about things and we can get together and talk more on Monday," Smith said.

I think Perkins is similar to all of the other guys that attended JD1. Mack told him to think on things for a few days and call back when he's ready. I'd be surprised if went past mid-week.

OrangeBloods reporting one of their sources has informed them that there is a fourth offer out after Perkins, Davis and Hall. It's definitely not Prevot because his mother was not in Austin yesterday and Giles wants to meet her first. Maybe Warrick?

I think Perkins would be the most natural LT on the Texas roster. Maybe the best LT in the past 5 years. Texas can build around Perkins and James. Get those 2 and then evaluate, evaluate, evaluate.

Gerry Hamilton was pretty darn confident that Warrick would get an offer. I'd say that's a good guess. I wonder how the Texas coaches go about meeting Prevot's mother? I assume Prevot would have to visit again.

Just to be different from Floss, Josh Thomas is my guess as the 4th offer given his post visit comments.

I agree. I think Maurice Porter should get an in person evaluation by Coach Searels before Texas moves forward with Thomas. They might end up taking both.

The article was on Horns Nation.

“[The coaches] are going to meet tomorrow morning sometime and pick whose who and go from there.” said Thomas, who stands 6-foot-7 and 335 pounds. "They are going to see if people really want to go there or not, and narrow down the list.”

Class of 2013 offensive tackle Josh Thomas enjoyed his trip to Austin.
Knowing that Texas is being especially selective in handing out scholarships this year, Thomas voiced his interest in Texas and is hoping it pays off with an offer sometime soon.

“Right now they have to see who is on their list,” he said. “Other than that they are excited because they are getting a lot of offensive linemen [on unofficial visits].”

Thomas sounded optimistic about his chances. He had an all-around good time in Austin, which he traveled to with his brother and offensive line coach.

“This morning we got everyone there and talked with Mack Brown, took a tour of the school,” he said. “Then we went to the weight room, treatment rooms and just basically looked at the school. We also went to practice and ate lunch. It was a day full of fun stuff.”

Thomas was especially impressed with the practice.

“Everything was fast-paced,” he said. “It’s something I’ll have to get used to because in high school everything is slower. Time management, everything was scripted. I really liked it. It was very organized.”

He was also left taken aback by the emphasis the Longhorns program puts on academics, which is going to be a big factor in Thomas’ decision.

“They want to win national championships. They want to win games,” he said. “But they are more concerned with you getting a degree than anything. They are more concerned that you graduate on time, go to class and do the right things.”

Thomas has offers from Mississippi State and Houston, which he picked up on Thursday. He said he might go to Mississippi State’s junior day on March 31.

Another JUCO monster that Searels may look at eventually.

“I just got off the phone with Coach (Oscar) Giles,” Prevot said at 3:35pm. “He told me I had an offer from Texas.”

“He (Giles) asked me about when I would commit. I told him around the summer time, or in the spring,” he said.

“I really like Texas. I liked all the coaches yesterday. I like Coach (Mack) Brown and I like everything about Texas,” he said.

“I really don’t know if things could change (timetable for committing). I go to LSU March 17 and Texas A&M March 24,” he said.

Quotes from the coach of ATH Jacorey Warrick:

"He did it about an hour ago," said Cy Falls head coach Kirk Eaton. "He went down there yesterday and waned to see where he fit in to the program. Coach (Oscar) Giles has done a great job recruiting him. He's been up front with him."

"They initially started recruiting him as an athlete. In fact, when he went to the camp last year I think Jacorey actually put DB on the questionnaire that he filled out. He just had to go down there, see what coach (Mack) Brown, coach (Darrell) Wyatt and coach Giles thought about it."

"They discussed it yesterday and he got a great feeling from the staff. They told him they want him as a wide receiver. I think he's the slot guy they're looking for in this class."

"He's a great kid. As good a football player he is, he's a better kid. He had so many offers from great schools," Eaton said. "He wanted to get it over sooner rather than later. He said he didn't want schools holding spots for him when could be recruiting other players."

"He's a great young man. If he comes back and say 'Texas is home for me,' that's a decision he didn't just make because he was wowed with the facilities or the tradition. He thought it through."

"He's explosive. We put him everywhere - inside, outside, on fly sweeps. He'll run some wildcat for us at quarterback next year," Eaton said. "He's so explosive. He has more than enough speed to blow the top off the coverage. But what makes him truly scary, he can turn a zero yard pass into a score. If you make a mistake, it's a TD with him. He can take a short pass and turn it into a home run ball. That's what he does with our offense, that's what I think he'll do at Texas.

"I think they talked to him about a Jordan Shipley role, working in the slot. He's very, very explosive. He can jump out of the gym. You can't teach athleticism. He adjusts to the ball. But the best thing about him is he's a yes sir kind of kid. He asks what he needs to do to get better. He makes others better around him. Texas got a kid they can trust in the classroom, outside of the classroom and in the community."

Quotes from DE Daeshon Hall and his high school coach:

"I had practice early after a playoff win," Hall said. "I just decided that I can't miss this Junior Day, I have to go. I told my mom and we called coach Chambers and he said it was cool that we came late. I had a good time."

"I thought I could fit in with coach Giles and coach Brown," Hall said. "My mom was excited. I called my dad and my uncles and we talked about it. The tradition and the coaching staff makes it a win-win. Plus, I think I can help them win another national championship."

"This is just a blessing, a great opportunity."

"I think coach (Bruce) Chambers really did a good job and made sure he was comfortable when he came down for the junior day. Meeting coach (Mack) Brown and his wife, that made his mom feel comfortable with the situation," said Lancaster head coach Chris Gilbert. "I talked to him on the way back, and he said he felt really comfortable about the visit. Coach Brown, coach Chambers and Oscar Giles - he really felt good about them and where they're trying to go with the program. He mentioned coach Brown being very in tune with his grades. He knew details of his transcript. That made an impression on his mom."

"There's no telling how good he's going to be," Gilbert said. "When he came down, he moved from Seattle, and his favorite sport was basketball. I've had kids that were basketball-first kids that played football. The thing I remember about him, he said 'Coach, I love basketball, but if I get in the weight room, I think I can play on Sundays.' It was a very unique confidence he had."

"I expect him to not only have a chance to ply on Sundays, but also to be really good at it. He has that kind of character about him. This kid's an outstanding young man. He's very intelligent. As soon as his body is ready to play Big 12 football, his mind will be prepared for the mental part as well."

"This is his first time even experiencing Texas football. It's made an impression on him. He goes and plays in the huge stadiums that we have here for high school sports. He hadn't even attended a football camp yet. Some kids, they start kids go to camps when they're freshmen or even before that. He hadn't done any of that."

"He has tremendous upside. He's rangy, has long arms. He's 6-6 and 220 pounds. He runs really well. He's a pass rushing demon. He's really a very good pass rusher. He has a knack for being around the ball and stripping the ball, creating turnovers," coach Hall said. "And he plays the run better than you would think with his body build."

"You can put some weight on him. And he's committed to the work. That's the thing about him, he's really a committed guy."
