Feel free to post any science about how adolescents are "not vectors", as I have repeatedly asked your disingenuous, lying ass.

Feel free to call the white house "science deniers" as well, stupid motherfucker. We all know you won't, because it is really hard to lick someones boots when you are calling them out for denying science.

Everyone else in the Western world, our peer nations, are doing it. We are the outlier here.’ The science is very clear on this — that, you know, for instance, you look at the [Journal of the American Medical Association's] pediatric study of 46 pediatric hospitals in North America that said the risk of critical illness from COVID is far less for children than that of seasonal flu. The science is on our side here. We encourage for localities and states to just simply follow the science. Open our schools.

I'm fine with not reopening schools, but that's easy for me. I've already been working from home for years and I have older kids who are self sufficient.

I'm pretty sure school closures disproportionately affect poorer families.

"Beyond 10-12 years, a study by the Institut Pasteur has shown that there, at that time, adolescents find the profile of parents, and they can indeed be both vectors and transmitters, ”he adds. The epidemiological study in question, published on April 23, had been conducted in a high school in Crépy-en-Valois, in Oise, an epicenter of the epidemic in France.

"The risk of being infected in the home went from 9% to 17% for parents if the student was infected, and from 3% to 21% for siblings," said the study.
According to Professor Arnaud Fontanet, first author of the text and head of the Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, "high school students are closer to adults for the capacity to transmit the virus than to children".

Nice to see you finally putting some work in. Were the high schoolers in question wearing masks?

Here's another study from Institut Pasteur

An epidemiological survey of 1,340 people linked to primary schools in Crépy-en-Valois, in the Oise department, conducted in late April 2020 found that based on some cases of infection detected in the students before the schools closed, it appears that the children did not spread the infection to other students or to teachers or other staff at the schools.

The survey was carried out by scientists at the Institut Pasteur, with the support of the Hauts-de-France Regional Health Agency and the Amiens Education Authority. The survey, which made use of serological tests developed by the Institut Pasteur, revealed that the proportion of primary school students infected by the novel coronavirus was 8.8%. The results were published online on pasteur.fr on June 23, 2020.

The findings included:

· The virus had been circulating in the community from late January 2020. The number of cases gradually increased until early March before stabilizing and then beginning to fall at the end of March.

· Of the 1,340 people included in the study, 139 had been infected by the virus, representing 10.4% of the population under study.

· 510 students from six primary schools were included in the study. There were three probable cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in three different schools before the schools closed for the February vacation and then for the lockdown in Crépy-en-Valois. These cases did not give rise to secondary cases among other school students or teaching staff.

· The teachers were only marginally affected, with just 3/42 (7.1%) teachers infected in total, a similar figure to the number of parents of non-infected children in the study who were infected by the virus (6.9%). For non-teaching staff, the proportion of infection was 1/28 (3.6%).

· The rate of infection was very high among parents of infected children (61.0%), but just 6.9% among parents of non-infected children. This suggests that the parents were the source of infection of their children in several cases.

· Only two individuals were admitted to hospital (1.4%) for COVID-19 out of the 139 recorded cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection, a figure that is not surprising for a relatively young population. Both individuals admitted to hospital were parents. There were no deaths.

· The children had minor forms of the disease, with clinical signs that were not particularly indicative of COVID-19. The only symptoms typically associated with the disease were diarrhea, experienced by 10 of the 58 infected children, and fatigue, experienced by 15 of them.

· In adults, 90.7% of those who lost their sense of smell and 75% of those who lost their sense of taste during the period of the study were infected with SARS-CoV-2, confirming the strong predictive value of these signs.

· The proportion of asymptomatic forms in infected individuals was estimated at 8/81 (9.9%) in adults and 24/58 (41.4%) in children.

The study identified three probable cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in three primary schools in Crépy-en-Valois before the schools closed for the February vacation and then for the lockdown in Crépy-en-Valois. But there was no secondary transmission of the virus to other children at the school, or from children to teachers. Most of the children were infected by their family members, probably their parents. The results are reassuring in view of the reopening of primary schools but they need to be confirmed by other studies in a school environment. A previous study by the same authors at the high school in Crépy-en-Valois demonstrated that a much higher proportion of high school students were infected during the February outbreak and that teachers and other school staff were also affected by the outbreak.

"Overall, the results of this study are comparable to those of studies carried out in other countries, which suggest that children aged between 6 and 11 are generally infected in a family environment rather than at school. The main new finding is that the infected children did not spread the virus to other children or to teachers or other school staff. These results need to be confirmed by other studies, given the low number of introductions of the virus in the schools under study," commented Arnaud Fontanet, lead author of the study, Head of the Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit at the Institut Pasteur and a Professor at the CNAM. "Once again, the willingness of the people of Crépy-en-Valois to take part in this study gave us the opportunity to further our knowledge about the virus so that we can be as well prepared as possible for children to return to school," continues Arnaud Fontanet.

"The study also confirmed that younger children infected by the novel coronavirus generally do not develop symptoms or present with minor symptoms that may result in a failure to diagnose the virus. The highly characteristic signs of loss of taste and smell were not observed at all in children under the age of 15, despite being experienced by half of the adults," adds Bruno Hoen, last author of the study and Medical Research Director at the Institut Pasteur.

This one, presents a huge problem, evidence wise, and also shows how sloppy you are.

The "infected contacts by age of patient" chart indeed shows zero infected contacts below age 19.

What you missed was the sample size in the chart above it.
Kind of hard to draw a sceintific conclusion of any size from a population of 12 incidents. Tentative, but not conclusive, because there is no indication in the data of any factors considered that might control for confounding variables.

COVID-19 in Dutch households

Within a short time frame, RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment set up a study to find out more about people infected with COVID-19 and their family contacts. In cooperation with GGD Utrecht, various families took part in this study. A total of 54 households took part up to mid-April, involving 239 participants, including 185 housemates. In this family-based study, there were no indications found in any of the 54 participating families that a child <12 years old was the source of COVID-19 within the family. The first part of the study has now been completed. The second part of the study is still ongoing. RIVM will be looking at the spread of the virus within families after a diagnosis of COVID-19 in a child. This approach gives us an even better opportunity to investigate how often an infection in children leads to further spread of the virus.

Schools and childcare facilities

Primary schools have been partially reopened since 11 May. The schools reopened fully on 8 June. Childcare facilities are also open again as of that date. Secondary education, special secondary education, practical education and newcomer education reopened on 2 June.

After double-checking with all 25 municipal public health services (GGDs), it has become apparent that there were no reports of possible COVID-19 clusters that had a link to schools or childcare facilities (or temporary childcare) before the schools closed on 16 March. After reopening the primary schools and childcare facilities, a few reports have come in regarding infections among employees at schools; RIVM has not received any reports of employees who were infected by children (based on data as of early June 2020). The reproduction number R, which represents the average number of new infections by a COVID-19 patient, has fluctuated below 1 since mid-March. This means that the spread of the epidemic is slowing down. After the partial reopening of primary schools and childcare facilities on 11 May, there was no sudden increase in the reproduction number (based on data as of early June 2020).

Mexican border towns are doing better because no one is going to Mexican border towns to seek better treatment.

https://khn.org/news/covid-19-overwhelms-border-icus/

Of course nobody is going there to seek better treatment, but Mexicans live there all the same. San Diego and Tijuana have just about the same population. Same with Monterrey and San Antonio, etc.

That article mentions a single hospital, which basically makes it anecdotal at this point.

Dang. I do remember reading it, in an article/interview of some kind.

Closest I could find on my own seemed to dovetail with everything else:
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0962-9

Under 10 are almost never transmitting, 10-19 mildly so (based on clinical symptom rate, assumed to mirror transmittableness, 21% at a 95% confidence interval of 12 to 31%)

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0962-9

They then go on to point out a very relevant bit of information, and a point I have made here before the models assume that schools close, reducing contacts.

Kids might not transmit at frequent intervals, but even infrequent things happen a lot when you have more chances for those things to happen.

To get around to your earlier question, because I am a better and more honest person than you are:

No. Even young kids should stay home from school. They may almost never transmit it between themselves and/or adults, but if you have tens of millions of them in clusters, day-in and day-out the math on that is pretty clear, it will increase the spread, even if close to zero, simply because of the sheer number of chances you are taking.

In places where the overall case load has gotten under control, I would be moderately comfortable, based on the science about really young kids, but overall, no, especially in hotspots. Given that there are about one adult per 12 pupils in most schools for younger kids, you are still forcing what? 29m/12=2.5m Two point five million adults who can easily spread it in close contact with each other?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) presents arguably the greatest public health crisis in living memory. One surprising aspect of this pandemic is that children appear to be infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, far less frequently than adults and, when infected, typically have mild symptoms,1–3 although emerging reports of a novel Kawasaki disease–like multisystem inflammatory syndrome necessitate continued surveillance in pediatric patients.4,5 However, a major question remains unanswered: to what extent are children responsible for SARS-CoV-2 transmission? Resolving this issue is central to making informed public health decisions, ranging from how to safely re-open schools, child care facilities, and summer camps down to the precautions needed to obtain a throat culture in an uncooperative child. To date, few published data are available to help guide these decisions.

In this issue of Pediatrics, Posfay-Barbe et al6 report on the dynamics of COVID-19 within families of children with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction–confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Geneva, Switzerland. From March 10 to April 10, 2020, all children <16 years of age diagnosed at Geneva University Hospital (N = 40) underwent contact tracing to identify infected household contacts (HHCs). Of 39 evaluable households, in only 3 (8%) was a child the suspected index case, with symptom onset preceding illness in adult HHCs. In all other households, the child developed symptoms after or concurrent with adult HHCs, suggesting that the child was not the source of infection and that children most frequently acquire COVID-19 from adults, rather than transmitting it to them.

These findings are consistent with other recently published HHC investigations in China. Of 68 children with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to Qingdao Women’s and Children’s Hospital from January 20 to February 27, 2020, and with complete epidemiological data, 65 (95.59%) patients were HHCs of previously infected adults.7 Of 10 children hospitalized outside Wuhan, China, in only 1 was there possible child to adult transmission, based on symptom chronology.8 Similarly, transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by children outside household settings seems uncommon, although information is limited. In an intriguing study from France, a 9-year-old boy with respiratory symptoms associated with picornavirus, influenza A, and SARS-CoV-2 coinfection was found to have exposed over 80 classmates at 3 schools; no secondary contacts became infected, despite numerous influenza infections within the schools, suggesting an environment conducive to respiratory virus transmission.9 In New South Wales, Australia, 9 students and 9 staff infected with SARS-CoV-2 across 15 schools had close contact with a total of 735 students and 128 staff.10 Only 2 secondary infections were identified, none in adult staff; 1 student in primary school was potentially infected by a staff member, and 1 student in high school was potentially infected via exposure to 2 infected schoolmates.

On the basis of these data, SARS-CoV-2 transmission in schools may be less important in community transmission than initially feared. This would be another manner by which SARS-CoV-2 differs drastically from influenza, for which school-based transmission is well recognized as a significant driver of epidemic disease and forms the basis for most evidence regarding school closures as public health strategy.11,12 Although 2 reports are far from definitive, the researchers provide early reassurance that school-based transmission could be a manageable problem, and school closures may not have to be a foregone conclusion, particularly for elementary school–aged children who appear to be at the lowest risk of infection. Additional support comes from mathematical models, which find that school closures alone may be insufficient to halt epidemic spread13 and have modest overall impacts compared with broader, community-wide physical distancing measures.14

These data all suggest that children are not significant drivers of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unclear why documented SARS-CoV-2 transmission from children to other children or adults is so infrequent. In 47 COVID-19–infected German children, nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 viral loads were similar to those in other age groups, raising concern that children could be as infectious as adults.15 Because SARS-CoV-2 infected children are so frequently mildly symptomatic, they may have weaker and less frequent cough, releasing fewer infectious particles into the surrounding environment. Another possibility is that because school closures occurred in most locations along with or before widespread physical distancing orders, most close contacts became limited to households, reducing opportunities for children to become infected in the community and present as index cases.

Almost 6 months into the pandemic, accumulating evidence and collective experience argue that children, particularly school-aged children, are far less important drivers of SARS-CoV-2 transmission than adults. Therefore, serious consideration should be paid toward strategies that allow schools to remain open, even during periods of COVID-19 spread. In doing so, we could minimize the potentially profound adverse social, developmental, and health costs that our children will continue to suffer until an effective treatment or vaccine can be developed and distributed or, failing that, until we reach herd immunity.16,17

Texas GOP will stick with virtual convention,

even though federal judge ruled in-person Houston event is an option

The ruling was a striking last-minute development as party officials have struggled to get a virtual gathering underway.

But soon after the ruling, party Chair James Dickey said

the party will continue with its plans for a virtual convention,

saying it would provide the best opportunity for delegates to participate.

Jared Woodfill, an attorney for Houston activist Steve Hotze, who helped file the lawsuit, said Judge Lynn Hughes ruled that the party can hold an in-person convention both this weekend and next weekend — and “that the City of Houston may not interfere with it.”

I think things needs a sense of proportion and scale.

That's why it pisses me off that our city reports cumulative case counts for zip codes. And after 300 cases, they just put them in a bucket of 300+. So, a zip code with 301 cases would be considered the same as 10k cases. Not very useful information.

Also, the city dumped some backlog of thousands of positive cases from antigen and "probables" on its dashboard recently.

About 40-50 percent reduced mobility from late March til Late April, which made May's growth curve look good. And throughout the first half of May, still around 30 percent reduced. But then we see it creeping up and reaching 20 percent reduced by the first week of June. When you factor in complacency due to social distancing fatigue (when this first started, people were avoiding each other like it was the plague. Not so anymore) + hotter weather driving people indoors + exponential growth = the current situation.

What I'm sure is frustrating many Texans ITT is that Texas had the curve crushed. But they had no plan on how to open and how to mitigate. No comprehensive test-and-trace program in place. That's the wrong way to look at it. By hook or by crook, Texas was probably doing the best in US from the start to around early June. With proper solutions in place, Texas could've kept the spread in check and had a relatively open economy. But Abbott and Co. went 0-60 with reopening. Newsom did the same thing here, but he shutdown bars, indoor dining, hair salons, etc again. Abbott won't commit to anything because he seems to live in fantasy land.

No. Because Latinos typically live in multigen households and/or in crowded households and make up a decent percentage of essential workers, while whites have jobs that can be done from home.

I'm specifically thinking of health problems and vit-D deficiency in minority communities.

The Balous Miller Strike Force got restaurant dining rooms opened up on May 1st at 25% capacity, but there was no enforcement so the capacity was really just a suggestion and it was 100% capacity for any restaurant in the state that wanted to do so. It was funny too because the right wing posters here were claiming victory because we weren't New York two weeks later. I think it's just a case of exponential growth being really slow at first from a small seed. Same thing when everyone upstairs was saying it's only 50 deaths right before New York, New Orleans, and Detroit blew up. But the huge jumpstart seemed to be bars in late May. They were opened immediately at 100% capacity. Technically only 50% capacity, but that was really just voluntary and when Austin tried to shut down two bars over capacity and those bars sued the city, the state of Texas told Austin to go fuck their mothers some more. So no enforcement = 100% capacity.

”In 4 months, the U.S. transformed into an obedient socialist country. Government dictated what events are acceptable to attend. Violent protests that instill fear are OK but church services, family funerals and patriotic celebrations are dangerous. And you bought it without a fight.

Standing in a graduation line is a "safety hazard". Small businesses were forced to close but crowds to support the corporate money machine at WalMart, Lowes and Home Depot are OK.

Come on. It's "just a mask" & "safety precautions".

How about a little hush money. Here's $2,400 that we stole out of your pay check in the first place. Enjoy. Buy something with it. From a big corporation.

Cash is dirty. We can't give change. There's a coin shortage. Use your card. In 4 months, they convinced you to use a traceable card for everything.

In less than 4 months, government closed public schools then "restructured" education under the guise of "public safety". In less than 4 months, our government demonstrated how easily people assimilate to "guidelines" that have NO scientific premise whatsoever when you are fearful.

In less than 4 months, our government successfully instilled fear in a majority of the population in America that allows them to control every aspect of your life. Including what you eat, where you go, who you see and your toilet paper.

And the most dangerous and terrifying part? People are not afraid of the government who removed their freedom. They're afraid of their neighbors, family and friends.

And they hate those who won't comply.

It's absolutely terrifying to me that so many people don't question "authority". They are willing to surrender their critical thinking skills and independence. They just... gave up without thinking. Without a fight.

Do you know what's coming next?
"It's just a vaccine. Come on. It's for the greater good".

Wait until you're told that you can't enter any store or business without proof of the Covid-19 vaccine. Wait until you can't go to public events or get on a plane without proof of receiving the vaccine.

To everyone that doesn't believe this is possible - DO YOU UNDERSTAND that government successfully dictated to people WHEN they were allowed to be outside, where they were allowed to go, and how their children would be educated in less than 4 months? And that a majority of the population followed blindly because they were told to do so.

You're kidding yourself if you think this behavior won't be repeated with a vaccine. Or whatever the next step is.

"I don't follow politics."
"Who cares about that stuff?"
"I don't like to think about it."

They got you. Without a thought. Without a fight. Just like France. Just like Russia. Just like China. Welcome, comrade”.

Or maybe it scares the left away from in person voting since they realize what a dangerous virus this is while the right who thinks this is a hoax shows up in droves. No doubt, but I think his polling lead could widen to 15 points if things continue to get worse, which might be what he needs to win on Election Day.

I questioned it right away. The left didn't, and Winehole even dragged it here and posted it like it was fact. Then the subsequent wringing of hands and "amen" chants from the left. If it was from the right, it would have been scrutinized by the left because there is no need to believe it. The left relishes the appearance of chaos when the right is in control and vice versa.
