Eh, the attribution turned out to bad but the picture it draws isn't far off. It's odd. One hospital in the valley set up a tent ward in its ambulance bay. Another has scores of beds available but no one to staff them. Latest plan is to have COVID patients recover in hotels.

Having dedicated convalescent space would seem to make sense given how long recovery takes for bad cases and how long people can shed virus (up to 39 days)
I hope this spike is scary enough to alter behavior. From what I've seen in Austin this weekend, that would not appear to be the case.

I don't think we change our behavior until the governor takes it seriously. The governor won't take it seriously until hundreds of people start dying in hallways.

California ain't trending too hot, either, but Texas's trending is a lot worse. 27 percent positive rate today vs. CA's 12 percent. And Texas has 2000 more hospitalizations with their trend on a steeper incline.
Due in part probably to Texas having a greater of tholdrens. But we have our share, too, and Newsom and local governments have caved to the Freedumbs crowd.
That is some cherry picking shit by the governor. :spin
They are going to stand by the "death rate" until it gets close. Splits thinks it won't, but I am not so sure. We need to act to stop the spread, but I don't think we will do that effectively. I think the plateau will be a lot less than NY, but a lot longer. This shit is just going to bounce around for a while.

Because 2020 isn't fucked enough, what happens when hurricane season hits?
And a hurricane in the middle of a pandemic was very much on our minds at NORTHCOM. We started calling it the COVICANE. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling for an above-average Atlantic Hurricane Season this year with a possibility of 19 named storms. We based some of our planning off Hurricane Harvey, which struck Cruz’s hometown of Houston in 2017. Typically, the National Guard and some active duty forces respond to hurricanes to provide things like search and rescue, engineering, and medical support. Rooftop helicopter rescues make for dramatic footage, but the truth is that the military does not do the bulk of the work. Instead, volunteer organizations like the Red Cross lead the effort by managing shelters, feeding the hungry, and processing displaced families. My team looked at how COVID-19 might impact volunteers. What we found was scary.
Foremost, most members of these volunteer organizations are over 60 years old, putting them into the high-risk category for COVID-19. According to the American Red Cross, of their 21,000 trained disaster responders, 42 percent are over the age of 65, 43 percent are between 40-64; and just 13 percent are between 18 and 39. This means the people we need most in a disaster are also among the most vulnerable. The Red Cross says that it has procured PPE for its disaster workers, but we found that other volunteer organizations, given the already nationwide shortage, might not have enough. Everywhere we looked we found data indicating if we failed to flatten the curve, we would be risking the volunteer infrastructure so vital to hurricane response and recovery. It gets worse.
If volunteers aren’t available or if they get sick, the hard work of disaster response would fall on to the only other available pool of manpower: the military. This is problematic in its own way. If a COVICANE response stretches a state National Guard to the breaking point, active duty forces could be deployed to help. The Army only keeps a few active units on standby for what is known as the Defense Support to Civil Authorities mission. In a pinch, untrained active-duty forces could fill the gap and do their best. But the real problems would come after their exposure to the virus in the disaster zone.

I said the hospitals would be overwhelmed indeed. Stand by that. We have hit capacity in a lot of them so far, and you can only push around new cases so much.
If I am wrong on it, I will own it. The system itself stands at 92% capacity statewide with many hospitals, including Hays Seton not able to take new cases, now meaning they are literally overwhelmed.
I can only hope the surge they will need to do will be enough to keep the worst case scenario from happening.

"We’re full to the gills,” said Dr. Carlos J. Cardenas, chairman of the board at DHR Health.
In neighboring Cameron County, all of the hospitals were at or above capacity and holding patients in their emergency departments Monday, said Dr. James Castillo, the county health authority. Some were converting or eyeing areas not typically used for patient care, like conference rooms or lobbies, he said.
At Valley Baptist Medical Centers in Brownsville and Harlingen — which keep opening new units to care for critically ill patients — there were people waiting in the emergency room hallways for treatment this week, said Dr. Jamil Madi, medical director of the ICU in Harlingen. The hospitals are nearly out of ventilators and are starting to consider older models and disaster ventilators that are less optimal for treating the virus, he said.
“There’s nothing else other than COVID. … You treat COVID, you look at COVID, you see COVID, you smell COVID, you hear COVID. Everything’s COVID,” Madi said. “There are two parallel worlds: The world inside the hospital and the world outside. … We need people to understand that it is a dire situation going on inside the hospital.”

'I've never seen SO many people so, so severely sick' | Austin nurse chronicles COVID-19 situation on Reddit
According to Dr. DeVry Anderson, chief medical officer with St. David's South Austin Medical Center, the hospital has seen morgue space fill up and deceased COVID-19 patients have had to stay in their room while waiting for morgue space to clear. Anderson told KVUE they have not transitioned parts of the hospital to ICU-level, but they have moved ICU staff around to provide ICU-level care in the intermediate care (IMC) area for COVID-19 patients because the health status of those patients can deteriorate more quickly. However, Anderson said the hospital is open to making those changes to retrofit rooms if needed.
"We're committed, as we always have been, to our plan to utilize all available care space to include retrofitting other clinical rooms with equipment or with beds or with the staff needed to care for different levels of acuity," Anderson said.
Morgues are full. Dead patients left in rooms, as space is cleared. Refridgerated trucks on the way.
Surge medical personnel are being flown in.

From the txdshs data the region is not over capacity.
Our county has 1,924 beds, some of which are labor and delivery and not currently being expanded for COVID patients. Thats before pop up units. We currently have 1,024 hospitalized COVID patients alone. Hospitals typically run at 50 to 60% capacity. Why is it hard to believe that there is very little room for any more people?

".....We strongly encourage everyone, to just very simply, for a few months, wear a face mask whenever you go into public. That way you can make sure you do your part to slow the spread of COVID-19 and you do your part to save lives," Abbott said.
He said he's focused on the state's positivity rate and hospitalization numbers as things move forward.
When asked why the issue of wearing masks is such a divisive issue, Abbott said, "You know, because every doctor says that wearing a mask can slow the spread of the coronavirus ... it's mystifying why some people continue to reject it....."

This is speculation because we don't know what symptoms need to present in order for Texas hospitals to consider a Covid-Like diagnosis. Their health department links the CDC list of symptoms, so I assume that's probably their guide. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html
Things is, we've learned a lot more about Covid since the start, and the range of symptoms are beyond the CDC's list now. Heart palpitations, numbness in extremities due to clotting, stroke-like symptoms. Another problem I have with his argument is that he seems to be using the increase in "with Covid" admissions as evidence that either people are getting sick with other illnesses and are simply testing positive and/or that the Covid deaths will start declining since CLI admissions are flat. Don't buy either.
The "with Covid" admissions have increased along with Texas's overall increase in Covid infections. Why weren't these people getting sick with other illnesses at the same rate before Texas starting spiking? And this was when the state was pretty much wide open, meaning elective surgeries were allowed and the fear factor was lower, so we can't conclude that these are simply people who delayed treatment for something who are now flooding in. This leads me to believe that Covid has exacerbated some preexisting condition or that they are presenting with symptoms that Texas doctors aren't classifying as Covid related (like stroke-like symptoms) yet.
And I don't expect deaths to remain flat over the next couple of weeks, as he seems to be implying, As I said, I think the logical conclusion is that Covid is exacerbating diabetic, hypertension, and other health conditions to a level where people are seeking medical care.

had to borrow my kids phone to see it. (number of cases)*(fatality rate)=estimated fatalities.
This stuff isn't hard.
Given that Texas doesn't count probable fatalities we can start estimating the actual numbers of cases. The number of actual cases has been pretty steady at about 7 to 10 times the confirmed case load, so you can make some reasonable estimates based on this.
ICU hospitalizations have been holding fairly steady at 10.5K, so that will start producing a fairly steady death count.

"At least we're not New York" is a shitty deflection. Texas had the outbreak controlled. Curve crushed. The citizens we're complying. And then Abbott "yolo'ed" the reopening and the spikes show the result. If Texas would've used the bought time to set up a comprehensive test-and-trace program, phased their reopening more slowly, they would've been enjoying Denmark levels of outbreak control.

I hear from others that its being closed off to COVID patients to allow for elective surgeries. I don't know who to believe on that one. It is a privately owned hospital and they have had fraud issues in the past. "Rio Grande City, Texas-based Starr County Memorial Hospital, implemented an ethics committee and a triage committee to review incoming COVID-19 patients, Starr County Health Authority Jose Vazquez, MD, said during a July 21 videoconference call. The committees will determine what type of treatment patients will likely require and whether they are likely to survive. Those deemed too fragile, sick or elderly will be advised to go home. Patients with low recovery chances will be better cared for at home with loved ones rather than dying at a hospital thousands of miles away, Dr. Vazquez said.

1000 Texans have died from COVID-19 Texas during the last six days. It took 10 days for the previous 1000 deaths.
According to state health data (https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2020/texas-coronavirus-cases-map/?_ga=2.21668219.1565740234.1595806377-775993412.1580945206) released Sunday, 5,038 people in Texas had died from the virus. That’s 153 more deaths than the day before and 1,080 more than a week ago. Public health experts have said that reported totals are likely to be an undercount (https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/20/coronavirus-deaths-texas/) because not all people who died with coronavirus symptoms were tested.https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/26/texas-coronavirus-deaths/ (https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/26/texas-coronavirus-deaths/?utm_campaign=trib-social&utm_content=1595812642&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter)

I agree. I am not sure why the CDC released this. It seems like ammunition for all the people that are pushing to open schools. Before we decided to home school this semester we reached out to our two smaller kids' elementary teachers from last year and they both expressed concerns about reopening. For that reason, we thought it best to pull out our kids. Our oldest is going into 8th grade and good luck making 24% of those kids wear a mask.

Well, you are protecting yourself mainly by keeping them home, and helping to prevent the spread. We all need to do what we can.
CDC did that because, in all likelihood, they were ordered to do so by the Trump administration.
You can't really reopen schools until you have the spread contained. You can't contain the spread, unless you have stay at home and masks.
Republicans won't do either stay at home or masks. They argue against both, here and elsewhere.
Republicans will not, therefore, act to contain the outbreak. Schools will not, therefore, be open in places where Republicans are setting policy.
Pretty easy to draw a straight line there. Republican policy = economic damage = damage to kids education
The anti-science chickens are coming home to roost.

"Fourteen members of a Texas family tested positive for the novel coronavirus after some attended a small barbecue and went on to spread the illness to their relatives.
Tony Green, a Dallas resident, detailed his extended family's experience with COVID-19 in a personal essay published on Friday. The essay's publication came nearly one month after his father-in-law's mother passed away from health complications caused by the respiratory infection. Green and his father-in-law, Rafael Ceja, were both hospitalized one week earlier.
"The virus had attacked my central nervous system, and the staff stopped me from having a stroke," Green wrote in Friday's essay...
"I admit traveling deep into the conspiracy trap over COVID-19," he acknowledged. Green described himself as a gay conservative in his recent essay, and said he voted to elect President Donald Trump in 2016.
"You cannot imagine my guilt at having been a denier, carelessly shuffling through this pandemic.........."

After months of undercounting coronavirus deaths, Texas’ formal tally (https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2020/texas-coronavirus-cases-map/) of COVID-19 fatalities grew by more than 600 on Monday after state health officials changed their method of reporting.
The revised count indicates that more than 12% of the state’s death tally was unreported by state health officials before Monday.
The Texas Department of State Health Services is now counting deaths marked on death certificates as caused by COVID-19. Previously, the state relied on local and regional public health departments to verify and report deaths.

I’ve had covid three times and I have no side effects.
You ought to be on the phone with Faucci then. You seem to have special DNA.

Texas comes clean on nursing home data after trying to hide the ball for four plus months.
COVID-19 infections have exploded in Texas nursing homes this month, with 8,291 confirmed cases through Monday — four times more than the number of cases recorded in all of June, according to the state’s health agency.
More than three quarters of Texas’ 1,215 nursing homes have reported at least one coronavirus case since the beginning of the pandemic, up from just over half at the end of June.
It’s the same story in the state’s assisted living facilities, which reported 924 cases to the Texas Department of State Health Services through Monday, compared with 267 in June.
So far in July, the state has tested residents and staff members at 148 facilities, with 93 more facilities scheduled through the end of the month, Weldon said. That’s about 7% of all Texas long-term care facilities, :wtf including nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.

anecdotal but striking:
Two compelling case reports also suggest that masks can prevent transmission in high-risk scenarios, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford. In one case,a man flew from China to Toronto (https://www.cmaj.ca/content/192/15/E410) and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He had a dry cough and wore a mask on the flight, and all 25 people closest to him on the flight tested negative for COVID-19. In another case, in late May,two hair stylists in Missouri (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/06/17/masks-salons-missouri/) had close contact with 140 clients while sick with COVID-19. Everyone wore a mask and none of the clients tested positive. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/06/417906/still-confused-about-masks-heres-science-behind-how-face-masks-prevent

This wasn't the argument. The argument was fatality count.
But
There has been no replicated study or gold standard for masks or no masks being effective against covid.

This wasn't the argument. The argument was fatality count.A couple of the linked studies address that.
But
There has been no replicated study or gold standard for masks or no masks being effective against covid.Of course there hasn't. It's a novel virus, understanding what COVID-19 does will take time.
Btw, it's false to suggest there is no research supporting the efficacy of masking to reduce the spread of respiratory diseases. There is. There are also preliminary findings suggesting that masking may reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections.
Did you bother to read the links?

That wasn't suggesting anything other than there's no proof either way, yet some claim its science....the same people who claim science is irrefutable.... which obviously don't understand science

You do
wrong
as I have stated before, science is valuable because the method allows for correction when new evidence is found and tested thus eliminating a previous model
this has happened continuously
And it will keep happening especially with something as complex as biology which you know nothing about. You don’t even know why biology is complex.

That wasn't suggesting anything other than there's no proof either way, yet some claim its science....the same people who claim science is irrefutable.... which obviously don't understand scienceDemanding replicated experiments so soon after the discovery of a novel pathogen is preposterous, though I agree that saying that science is irrefutable (who said this?) is inconsistent with the theory of scientific research.
There's not proof in science the way there is in math or geometry, falsifiability is the criterion of the domain. (Karl Popper) Irrefutables -- unfalsifiable theories -- belong to pre-science or pseudoscience.
For someone who sets such store by science you sure are stingy with your own data set. When are you going to lay your cards on the table? There are many questions from many posters pending.
