It's a serious question and I will try to give a serious answer. It's a nasty virus. There is no denying that. People will continue to get it and die or get fucked up by it. We each individually have some control to limit our exposure. I think hospital occupancy and ventilator availability should be the deciding factor. Maybe make the decision on the local level. There is no good answer. Destroying the economy to be "safest" certainly isn't the answer.

But I think at this point we can stay opened and just use common sense social distancing. I don't think our country can afford a shut down.

I wish we would focus more on living healthy living and strengthening our immune system rather than a body count. Our country would be better served.

I think we continue to follow the CDC recommendations. Most people can follow those guidelines. Nursing homes need to remain quarantined. Places of business must be able to meet social distancing recommendations of CDC to remain open. Our office opened June 1 with the option for anyone to continue working from home. The entire office opted to come in and where masks and gloves when outside of their individual office. No carpooling to lunch or home - we are still very much isolated, just in our office.

I just don't think people will go for another forced quarantine like we did in March/April. Just my humble opinion. Fortunately, the coronavirus had no impact on my business and actually increased my workload, but I have plenty of friends whose lives are borderline on the verge of bankruptcy due to the shut down and could not afford another couple of months of the same.

It's not just cases, but hospitalizations too. I'm merely replying to your implication that the only explanation is a rise in testing. Most new cases are symptomatic and they're not appearing because people go on a whim and get tested at a new site. They're getting sick enough to enter the hospital system and are tested as a priority. I think the critical care ICU beds are going to fill pretty quickly. The ICU beds are where people who need urgent intervention go.

The most recent utilization report I could find listed for 2016 showed 5396 total beds for Bexar county, with 64.5% occupied. 1917 beds four years ago, likely before a few were scaled back due to closures or consolidations, or even just more utilization for existing due to population growth.

Those 1917 beds include ALL beds of every kind, i.e. maternity etc, and is probably a bit lower in 2020. I doubt the "adult day-care" beds help either.
