You don't get it. I explained that I just showed them the raw data collected and comment on the trends of that data. Those are indeed facts.

The bias behind collecting the data used, you are correct, is not a fact.

You have already commented on uncertainty then.
You really dont get this.
Are you some little MS student who has just learned to graph?

And the trends in the data can be extraordinarily subjective unless you use some best fit calculation.
Are you doing this when commenting on trends? They are approximations.

Back logging data- You have to stay in your house until there are 0 new cases reported, and for 5 following days I give you these case new case counts

3, 7, 9, 1, 9 could you come out of your house?

What if I told you those were all cases that were given to me 7 weeks ago, I just hadn't put them in until those dates?

What does that do to the data? Is it valid? Is it reliable?
What does it do to trend data? Should those numbers be used for policy of keeping me in my home of no dates are given with the case

"The total number of COVID-19 cases in San Antonio and Bexar County continues to rise rapidly with 5,962 total cases reported Friday.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg reported 412 new cases with four new deaths. The death count is now at 96. Three of the four people who died were Hispanic women. One was in her 60s, another in her 80s and one in her 90s. A white woman in her 70s also died.

Hospitalizations also continue to rise with 322 patients being treated, up from 55 on Thursday. Of those hospitalized, 101 are in ICU and 50 are on ventilators. There are 25% of staffed hospital beds and 78% of ventilators still available."

We must have secured more ventilators from the federal stockpile since I heard we were around 40% usage a couple of days ago. Fuck man that 19% positivity rate the mayor reported 40 minutes ago is terrifying for the city. It ain't good when they're talking about building field hospitals either. :pctoss

I'm surprised honestly. I was expecting summer heat to slow it down somewhat. Not to kill it off by any means, but certainly I was expecting it to slow growth a little bit, priming us for a horrendous fall/winter second wave. Damn I just hope as we're getting hammered by this we at least get an antibody resistance for a couple of years.

Our bodies are better suited to fight it off in the summer, but it doesn't really matter as all these cases will keep this fire smoldering until the big one hits in the fall/winter.

Most of the early outbreaks were clustered around cold weather cities though, other than New Orleans, whose explosive growth could be attributed to jam packed bars for Mardi Gras. I was kind of expecting a lull in the summer where everyone would be comfortable only for a NYC style November/December reality check here. But looks like we're getting that reality check right now. We really don't know a lot about this virus right now so it wasn't obvious IMO. The only thing that was obvious was the US would get raped by it in March when we were seeing it tear through Northern Italy, France, and Spain early on.

I suspect we're just going to build up to the big one as the next two plus months drag on. You get exponential growth going and it's probably not stopping until a fairly significant percentage of the population is recovered, where recovered means either (1) having gotten better without the virus present any more or (2) dead in these models. You still get pretty high growth but not exponential after that.

What is "the big one"? Seasonal flu?

When you have a huge wave that just overwhelms the healthcare system and you end up elevating the mortality rate because of lack of care. Like when Italy had something like a 12% mortality rate when people 60 and up were being denied ventilators due to shortages.

We might actually be better off by then because it sure looks like a large percentage of our population is going to get it in the next couple of months with how things are exploding. You don't really get exponential growth once you're around 20% plus infected and the higher the infected rate grows the harder it is for new infections. Though Osterholm seems to think we need to get to 60% infection rate at least to get to negative exponential decay in the number of current infections.

I might have been just hoping that wave would wait for November once the temperatures really drop here in the hope the Oxford vaccine would be successful and would start getting administered to doctors, nurses, EMT, etc in September and to high risk elderly before the end of the year. But probably better to expect the Oxford vaccine to be a failure.

We know full well this virus hits poor people way harder since they're working in ice houses, restaurants, barber shops, salons, retail stores, grocery stores, amazon warehouse, etc and having to interact way more with people than those who can work from home. Yeah but it's likely to be spread mostly to them and not from them in those zipcodes. The cashiers are wearing masks in Valero to protect the customer but the customers aren't extending that same courtesy. And the cashier is interacting with way more customers than the customer is cashiers. So that Valero cashier is mostly going to go spread it to his family back home, to the waiters and cashiers at the restaurants he eats at back home, etc. The virus may not be class conscious but the infection and mortality rates sure are.

Because I think people are getting it in some bars, spreading it at home.

Interesting. They adjusted their estimate to account for testing increases. Most states now in the red, showing an acceleration of the spread.

At 1.13 and six days of being infectious that means Texas' count will double in about 32 days or so, if it is accurate. Trend looks flatish, but with more and more businesses opening, i would guess it will bump up.

we are already seeing area ICUs taken in about what they can absorb and not get overwhelmed. Double the cases and keep that number over one, we will see the available capacity start to get strained within about four weeks.

(based on statements from Travis health officials)
https://www.kut.org/post/covid-19-latest-record-506-new-cases-travis-county-third-austin-bar-gets-suspended

A record 506 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Travis County on Sunday evening, up from 418 new cases reported Saturday. One new coronavirus-related death was reported.

The five-county region (Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell) had 10 new COVID-19 hospital admissions, according to Austin Public Health. There are currently 174 people hospitalized with the disease in the region.

The seven-day average of new hospital admissions is now at 25.7, down from 28.6 on Saturday. Local officials worry about patients overwhelming local hospitals, so they’re keeping an eye on that number and adjusting restrictions based on it.

The area is in stage 4 of APH’s risk-based guidelines, meaning higher risk individuals (people over 65 and those with underlying conditions) should avoid gatherings of more than two people and stay home unless absolutely necessary. Lower risk individuals should avoid gatherings of more than 10 people.

Stage 5, the highest risk level, would be triggered if the hospitalization average rises above 70. If the average falls below 20, the area will move down to stage 3.

I don’t understand why this virus can’t be considered by everyone what it really is, a generally non-lethal illness that while not a big deal for most, can and will kill many elderly, unhealthy, those with pre-existing conditions, and occasionally someone in perfect health. Should we be scared of it, yes. Should we take steps to mitigate our chances of catching/spreading it, yes. Is it the apocalypse, no, of course not.

He was greying and had his issues with weight and such, but he still worked every day and was nowhere close to the end of his life until he caught COVID. He likely got it from someone he worked with who wasn't showing any symptoms.

I'm not a fake news-truther, and don't think they're outright lying. However, I also don't think it fair to say that news coverage has erred towards a sober assessment of the situation. The impression I've gotten, especially over the past month of constant reports of spikes, is that a lot of media sources have trended towards sensationalism. Which is understandable since that's how they make their money.

Big news ifr for under 70...
evidence suggests the median coronavirus infection fatality rate for those under 70 is just 0.04%.

The estimate throws into sharp relief the lopsided mortality figures for the disease, which has claimed an inordinate number of elderly people across the planet while leaving younger individuals mostly unscathed.

John Ioannidis, a professor of epidemiology and population health at Stanford University, argues in a paper published earlier this month that COVID-19 "seroprevalence studies," which measure infection rates using the presence of antibodies in blood samples, "typically show a much lower fatality than initially speculated in the earlier days of the pandemic.

Why does it have to be the worst thing ever or nothing at all to so many do you suppose? I blame social media.

Other than being a virus with no vaccine that's easily spread and potentially lethal, one of the main problems is the hospital space.

"The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Texas continued to reach record highs over the weekend while new cases also climbed in the Houston area.

The new figures come as County Judge Lina Hidalgo and leaders in other urbanized counties have issued orders mandating that businesses require customers wear face masks. Hidalgo’s order goes into effect Monday, though the latest local trends indicate masks “won’t be enough,” said vaccine researcher Dr. Peter Hotez, a professor and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine....."

What was the high number of the range he reviewed?

What would you consider a sustainable strategy for infecting 70% of the nation quickly enough so the virus can burn out (since immunity looks to be short lived after infection, say ~1year) but not so quickly that you overwhelm the hospitals and lead to a lot of preventable deaths? Indoor dining rooms + bars + gyms look to be spiking the infection rate enough to where San Antonio is very worried about overwhelming the hospitals. But you eliminate those and have people wear masks and I wonder if infection rate slows to a crawl like during April and May and then you never get herd immunity like how we ended the Spanish flu pandemic. Kind of seems like you're fucked either way unless you go the slow route and know you'll have an effective and safe vaccine to artificially get to that 70% herd immunity rate.

Well I think anything that has the goal of infecting anyone much less 70% is a bad strategy, the so called herd immunity strategy. I also think it is just as bad to have a universal lock down which we did for way too long.

Starting off the American people seemed to be very much all onboard for a period of time and then in April Fauci moved the goalpost to "no new cases, no deaths" followed by politicians trying to lock down harder to the point where it made no sense and was really destroying a lot of people economically. Now we're at the point where people seem to have said fuck it this is bullshit. So I don't claim to know the perfect sustainable strategy but it doesn't matter what the strategy is if people aren't onboard or can't possibly stay onboard.

I think the way it's going to work out is we'll just go through localized spikes and shutdowns. Some places will do better than others and at the end of it we will say would've,could've, should've.

What I'm almost 100% sure of is SA is about to get fucked. My wife had 8 covid calls today from pts, diagnosed over the weekend or a family member diagnosed. That's more than she's had the whole time. About the same for all of her colleagues so they had a meeting today to start planning how they are going to operate short staffed, anticipating it's only a matter of time now that they will lose staff for weeks due to qt.

Problem is that spike in New York may have only been slowed enough to save the hospitals by the strict lockdowns there though. We haven't really seen an explosion like that without a lockdown during. I guess San Antonio, Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa, Houston, Austin are all going to be a control groups. Don't think the governors of any of those states will allow lockdowns no matter how bad things get. Gotta wonder if there is even a right path when it seems the virus mostly infects through indoors close contact so either don't shut the bars, gyms, dining rooms down and overwhelm the hospitals leading to preventable deaths from lack of resources or do shut them down and economically devastate a lot of people and maybe not infect enough either to make progress to ending the pandemic.

Some anecdotes. I have a 20 y.o. daughter. She has a 20 something friend and a 20 something boyfriend. She has friend sleep over. They drive around together. They don't social distance or wear masks. During this pandemic, my daughter also gets a job in the restaurant industry. Obviously, I'm not thrilled about any of this. Hopefully, my daughter doesn't inadvertently kill me or my wife.

The way the NYC curve looks, it appears that covid just burned through that city. Sure, they locked down, only to have vast majorities infected indoors. Putting covid patients in nursing homes surely didn't help. This thing only burns out when it runs out of fuel, just like a brush fire.

We have spikes in the southern states now, because we locked down early and opened early. Even our current "spikes" are a mere blip compared to what happened in the northeast.

This spike isn't even the big one, tbh. Weather may be on our side now, but this country is getting fucked this fall and winter, imo.

This is just part of our first wave.

I strongly doubt they have reached anything approaching 70% infection rate in NYC for it to have burnt out in that city. I'd be absolutely floored if it's not back hard in the next month or two there.

Wonder how many have died at home that haven't been reported yet. As far as I know, my cousin hasn't been listed as among the dead.

Ample time to start boosting your immune system.

I've got my mom on 2000 IU of D3 daily.

Take more, if you're some great big fat person.

Definitely been a little more health conscious overall. I worry about my mother too; lupus, arthritis, Graves', senior, etc.

I remember an article about "excess deaths" in NYC in March and April of 6K+ not counted in the C19 total

Yeah, me and my siblings have been looking out for her this whole time. Constantly calling, asking if she's left at all. :lol

She's fed up, but her and many others are going to have to simply stay home as long as this takes.

I think this is spreading by "kids" in their early 20's, hanging out together indoors without social distancing or masks. They feel invulnerable, which they practically are, but they don't understand that they'll pass it to parents, grandparents, etc.

I'd hate for her to live with that.

Just had a long talk with her and explained how this was transmitting fast in her age group.

Booted the friend out of my house.

Will socially distance from my daughter for the foreseeable future. Sucks, but oh well.

There's been multiple studies now that put the likelihood of an infected person spreading it to members of the same household at around 20-30%. That's pretty high but it also shows that it's possible to not get it while living in the same household as an infected person. Stands to reason simple distancing and precautions within the household could lower that chance quite a bit.

Yeah Osterholm was predicting that forest fire scenario back in March too on the interview he did with Joe Rogan. He was also predicting about 400k dead if I remember right, which kind of sounds conservative now based on about ~150k dead conservatively so far when he believes we're only at 5% total infection in the US (he said that 5% number on Chris Wallace's Sunday morning show the week before last).
