Sometimes it seems some people are cheering for the virus. Very odd.Baseline Bum was merely quoting from an official report. Odd you'd object to a corrected tally, does the more accurate count offend you?

At least one death on Monday. Can't know more than that, based on how it was worded.

Were you hoping for more deaths this week?

I clearly admitted at least one death on Monday. The information was just published today.

Odd that you think my admission is an objection.

There are very many zip codes in Bexar county. No people from any of those zip codes died of covid in the past two days.

It is what it is. Covid is fading in the Bexar county area. Don't know why you people hate good news.

Oh.
I thought you only reported on yours.

But reported on yours because it looked good.
I get it. If they all look good, you will report on all of them.

"Eleven leaders of the system’s member hospitals and medical schools said in a joint statement that COVID-related admissions were increasing at an “alarming rate,” stretching the capacity of ICU units.....

“If this trend continues, our hospital system capacity will become overwhelmed, leading us to make difficult choices of delaying much-needed non-COVID care to accommodate a greater number of COVID patients,” the group wrote.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Houston-ICU-capacity-could-be-exceeded-Thursday-15363724.php

Entirely self-inflected wound. Some right wing fuckwad pushed for reopening on talk radio a month or two ago, and that got picked up in their echo chamber until President Lazyass McTweetenstein picked up on it, and pushed the policy, now we are all going to face a huge, predictable, avoidable, stupid spike, that is going to damage the economy more than hunkering down would have.

If we had competent leadership, and Republicans were not the fucking idiots that they collectively are, we might have had a chance.

New Zealand had competent leadership.

And "probable" covid-19 deaths are counted along with confirmed covid-19 deaths.

Correction: Probable CASES are included with confirmed CASES.

Wrong.

As of July 27, 2020 DSHS is reporting COVID-19 fatality data based on death certificates. A fatality is counted as a COVID-19 fatality when the medical certifier attests on the death certificate that COVID-19 is a cause of death.

Doesn't count "probable", just 100% confirmed, which, by defintion, does NOT include "probable". You sniveling Trump bootlick.

None of this matters anyway, since Bexar county doesn't normalize the deaths by EVENT DATE like they do daily case numbers. Not sure why, as it is a much smaller dataset. Those deaths are by REPORTED DATE, so there's no way to know with any certainty when those deaths occurred.

(puzzled)

Yes they are. We closed bars and implemented some restrictions and masks, and shocker we flattened the curve.

Even so, we still only have seen about 10% of the overall population get the disease so far. Typical flu gets about 40 to 60% of the population.

What do you propose we do now?

0 hospitals ever overwhelmed
0 healthy people dying
Lower ifr than flu

Masks not proven to work
Lockdowns proven to not work

Sweden suuccess.
Open schools not dangerous

I said if nothing changes they will be overwhelmed. Quite a few hospitals actually were overwhelmed and had to start shifting patients around to find spare beds.

We avoided the worst by a rather shockingly narrow margin, because we locked down again, and did things like close bars AND require masks.

smh

Not sure why you need to lie to make your case.

I said that we are on track to have the hospitals overwhelmed, unless something changes.

Stand by that, as more data comes in.

We closed back down after having bars and restaurants open.

He opened things up. things got hot... and then closed back down.

On July 2, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued an updated Executive Order GA-28 regarding additional measures to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On July 2, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued Executive Order GA-29, requiring all Texans to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth in public spaces in counties with 20 or more positive COVID-19 cases, with few exceptions.

On June 30, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued a proclamation suspending elective surgeries and procedures at hospitals in Cameron, Hidalgo, Nueces, and Webb counties to help ensure hospital bed availability for COVID-19 patients in these communities. This proclamation amends the Governor’s previous Executive Order to include these four counties in addition to Bexar, Dallas, Harris, and Travis counties.

On June 26, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued Executive Order GA-28, limiting certain businesses and services as part of the state’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

On June 25, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued Executive Order GA-27, suspending elective surgeries and procedures at hospitals in Bexar, Dallas, Harris, and Travis counties.

On June 23, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued an updated Executive Order GA-26 to expand the ability of mayors and county judges to impose restrictions on certain outdoor gatherings of over 100 people.

On June 3, 2020, Gov. Abbott issued Executive Order GA-26 to coincide with the third phase of the ongoing plan to expand openings of certain businesses and activities in Texas. All newly opened businesses and services are subject to the recommended minimum standard health protocols outlined by DSHS.

https://www.dshs.texas.gov/coronavirus/execorders.aspx

June 26 closures of bars and other businesses flattened the curve.

As every single epidemiologist said they would. Limit contact... limit spread.

This is not difficult, except for Trump cultists.

"It goes through air," he told Woodward in a Feb. 7 phone call not previously reported. "So that's a tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than even your strenuous flus."

At another point in the Feb. 7 conversation, Trump says COVID-19 could be deadlier than the flu, "maybe five times more deadly."

Federal appeals court rejects Texas Democrats' effort to expand voting by mail

The Texas Democratic Party had challenged the state's age limits on voting by mail, arguing that they violated the 26th Amendment's protections against voting restrictions that discriminate based on age.

the appellate judges rejected (http://www.ca5.uscourts.gov/opinions/pub/20/20-50407-CV1.pdf) the Texas Democratic Party's effort to expand eligibility for voting by mail to all registered voters based on their argument that

the state's age restrictions for such voting violate the 26th Amendment's protections against voting rules that discriminate based on age.

The panel of appellate judges ultimately found that "conferring a privilege" to some voters — in this case the option of voting by mail to voters 65 and older — does not alone violate the 26th Amendment.

"75 members of the Texas Tech football team have tested positive for COVID-19 since testing began in June ... this according to the University.

On Monday, TTU announced 5 football players had tested positive for coronavirus -- which raised the previous total from 70 to 75.

According to the University, there are still 6 active cases -- but 69 players have recovered.

75 cases is a pretty staggering number considering there are 123 players listed on the Texas Tech football team.

The school notes the total number of student-athletes who have tested positive at the University is at 116 -- which means the football team responsible for nearly two-thirds of all student-athlete cases.

The football team has the week off -- the next scheduled game is Sept. 26 against Texas.

The Red Raiders kicked off the 2020 season this past Saturday -- defeating Houston Baptist in a 35 to 33 victory.

Several TT players were missing from the game -- but the school did not say if it was COVID related, according to KLBK.

COVID has been an issue on the Texas Tech campus -- more than 1,100 students have reportedly tested positive so far -- with University president Lawrence Schovanec addressing the issue in an open letter this week.

"Over the last few days, we’ve seen a notable increase in positive COVID-19 cases in our campus community, with the majority of these cases among our students who live off campus," Schovanec said.

"While we anticipated positive cases and planned for this situation, it is disappointing that we are at this point less than two weeks into the semester."

We've reached out to Texas Tech for comment -- so far, no word back..."

The administrations seem to be trying their best to get it done, but the kids will not really hew to any mask discipline, and many places just don't have te physical room to have anywhere near safe distancing.

in the austin area they are taking a "remote first, then in person if you opt in later" approach.

One of my high schoolers doesn't want to go back, but the other really misses his friends and wants to go back. wife, who teaches HS at another school entirely, is really not wanting that.

Our immune system

For thousands of years, the human body has been exposed daily to moisture and droplets containing infectious microorganisms (viruses, bacteria and fungi).

The penetration of these microorganisms is prevented by an advanced defence mechanism – the immune system. A strong immune system relies on normal daily exposure to these microbial influences. Overly hygienic measures have a detrimental effect on our immunity. 12 13 Only people with a weak or faulty immune system should be protected by extensive hygiene or social distancing.

Influenza will re-emerge in the autumn (in combination with covid-19) and a possible decrease in natural resilience may lead to further casualties.

Our immune system consists of two parts: a congenital, non-specific immune system and an adaptive immune system.

The non-specific immune system forms a first barrier: skin, saliva, gastric juice, intestinal mucus, vibratory hair cells, commensal flora, … and prevents the attachment of micro-organisms to tissue.

If they do attach, macrophages can cause the microorganisms to be encapsulated and destroyed.

The adaptive immune system consists of mucosal immunity (IgA antibodies, mainly produced by cells in the intestines and lung epithelium), cellular immunity (T-cell activation), which can be generated in contact with foreign substances or microorganisms, and humoral immunity (IgM and IgG antibodies produced by the B cells).

Recent research shows that both systems are highly entangled.

It appears that most people already have a congenital or general immunity to e.g. influenza and other viruses. This is confirmed by the findings on the cruise ship Diamond Princess, which was quarantined because of a few passengers who died of Covid-19. Most of the passengers were elderly and were in an ideal situation of transmission on the ship. However, 75% did not appear to be infected. So even in this high-risk group, the majority are resistant to the virus.

A study in the journal Cell shows that most people neutralise the coronavirus by mucosal (IgA) and cellular immunity (T-cells), while experiencing few or no symptoms 14.

Researchers found up to 60% SARS-Cov-2 reactivity with CD4+T cells in a non-infected population, suggesting cross-reactivity with other cold (corona) viruses.15

Most people therefore already have a congenital or cross-immunity because they were already in contact with variants of the same virus.

The antibody formation (IgM and IgG) by B-cells only occupies a relatively small part of our immune system. This may explain why, with an antibody percentage of 5-10%, there may be a group immunity anyway. The efficacy of vaccines is assessed precisely on the basis of whether or not we have these antibodies. This is a misrepresentation.

Most people who test positive (PCR) have no complaints. Their immune system is strong enough. Strengthening natural immunity is a much more logical approach. Prevention is an important, insufficiently highlighted pillar: healthy, full-fledged nutrition, exercise in fresh air, without a mask, stress reduction and nourishing emotional and social contacts.

Yeah but they forgot to just make up numbers for states they don't like

(shrugs)

Explain the spike. Raw numbers of deaths are the most accurate health statistics we have.

Maybe your dumb ass thinks that some secret cabal of county coroners are faking total death rates? :rollin

Texas still handing out at about #5, still closing in on New York.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1109011/coronavirus-covid19-death-rates-us-by-state/

Given that Florida is almost certainly similarly underreporting COVID deaths at this point, double theirs, and you have them at #4, and closing in on New York.

The dipshit Republican in charge of that state has lifted all restrictions, going balls deep for herd mentality, in the hopes that will save him.

Funny is that wave will hit around the time of the election.

Fun times.

No, you are the one saying this is a "mischaracterization of the data", but somehow can't say how it is a mischaracterization.

Explain the spike.

Because you say this, but all I hear in my head as I read is this:

"Durr dee durr, I'm Snakeboy, and all those thousands of dead people that died from a flu-like illness in the middle of a pandemic were killed by an invisible tornado and forest fire or something not the pandemic, that is a pure coincidence, because that would make Republicans look bad."

Stupid fucking Darrin can't explain the spike.

Pick a scale factor that moves Texas into 5th. Because, reasons

I have already explained why, i.e. the spike in deaths from all causes being twice as large as confirmed Covid deaths, and the fact that Texas deliberately doesn't count probable deaths as the cause.

Double Texas official count, you get double the infection rate.

Double Texas' rate on that list, and we jump to #5.

Explain the spike as anything other than COVID, stupid mother fucker. "it isn't COVID. Because, reasons" :jack
