Some anecdotes. I have a 20 y.o. daughter. She has a 20 something friend and a 20 something boyfriend. She has friend sleep over. They drive around together. They don't social distance or wear masks. During this pandemic, my daughter also gets a job in the restaurant industry. Obviously, I'm not thrilled about any of this. Hopefully, my daughter doesn't inadvertently kill me or my wife. I'd hate for her to live with that.

The models that attempt to capture the effects of easing restrictions show Texas ramping up a lot.

FWIW.

Guess we will get to see stupid Republican policies at the state level too. It's almost like Republicans... suck at policies based on evidence for some reason.

"AUSTIN, Texas -- Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday that Texas has surpassed 5,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day for the first time, another troubling milestone as the largest pediatric hospital in the U.S. begins taking adult patients to free up bed space in Houston.

The announcement comes days after Texas eclipsed 4,000 new cases for the first time just last weekend."

5,489 New COVID-19 Cases: Texas Reports All-Time Daily High

"Probably the greater factor that's pushing our numbers up is that the positivity rate is now gone from around 3% to around 9% — that's a threefold increase," said Dr. David Persse, public health authority for the Houston Health Department, according to Houston Public Media.

Texas doctor buries Trump-loving governor for ‘greatest public health failure in the history of the nation’

Dr. Peter Hotez, the dean of the School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine,

the current situation in Texas represents

the “greatest public health failure in the history of the nation,” and

he warned that it will spiral out of control very quickly.

“We’re seeing a very steep acceleration in the number of cases here

in Houston,

in our metro areas,

as you pointed out, and also in San Antonio and Austin,” he said.

“And it’s not just an increase in the number of cases, it’s the slope, the way it’s accelerating.

It’s almost vertical.

This is what we call an exponential rise,

meaning it’s been flat for a while and now it’s going up almost vertically.”

"Houston’s Texas medical center, often referred to as the largest medical center in the world, showed its ICU beds were at 97% of normal capacity. The hospital has maximum capacity for nearly 1,000 more ICU beds if it activates its plans for public health emergencies.

The surge in cases in Texas and increase in hospitalizations has been accompanied by a higher rate of positive tests. These are indicators cases are not increasing just because more people are being tested.

The head of the Houston Methodist hospital system, Dr Marc Boom, wrote in an email to employees on Friday: “We appear to be nearing the tipping point.”

In the email, seen by the Texas Tribune, Boom continued: “Should the number of new cases grow too rapidly, it will eventually challenge our ability to treat both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients.”

"CARROLLTON, Texas — As North Texas watches COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge, one family is shouldering a health crisis that they never expected to face.

That crisis, all began on May 30 when just a single relative, unknowingly infected with COVID-19, interacted with seven family members at a surprise birthday party. ...

Those seven family members then contracted and spread the virus to 10 other relatives.

Now, Ron Barbosa is keeping track of 18 people in his family who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Barbosa didn't attend the party himself, but the celebration was for his daughter-in-law who turned 30.

However, Barbosa's nephew hosted.

Even though everyone did their best to stay socially distant, Barbosa said it wasn't enough.

"It wasn't that long. It was only a couple of hours," Barbosa, a volunteer EMT said. "But during that brief time, somehow the other 18 family members are now infected with COVID."

Barbosa, who is also married to a doctor, said he and his wife refused to go to the party due to safety reasons.

However, it was a party that by current state health standards appeared harmless. A total of 25 people attended, and not all of them arrived and stayed for the same duration.

"When people started getting sick, we really let everyone have it," Barbosa said. "We knew this was going to happen, I mean this whole time this has been going on we've been terrified."

Among those infected are two young children, two grandparents, a cancer patient and Barbosa's parents, who are in their 80s.

Three are now hospitalized: Barbosa's parents Frank and Carole, along with his sister Kathy, who is battling breast cancer......

Before the party, he played golf with a few family members who also attended the event, according to Barbosa.

He says she went to the party and got infected, even though she was socially distanced outside on a porch.

But Barbosa's parents are in a much tougher situation.

Ron

Barbosa said it's likely Carole infected Frank after she stopped by the party to drop something off.

Carole has been hospitalized since June 13, and Frank has been in a hospital since June 17.

Frank is in the ICU and is on life support. Barbosa told WFAA that he is inches away from being put on a ventilator.

"My dad's hanging on by a thread," Barbosa said. "They're saying this is one of the last straws for my dad."

Visitation is mostly restricted, meaning calls to Barbosa's parents are vital.

"That's really the best medicine. You know they're in there by themselves with no family," Barbosa said holding back tears. "It's heartbreaking."

So it isn't business reopening, it is "young people not taking precautions".

What kinds of employment are most at risk?
What kinds of employment do most young people work at?

Lol I've seen as many prime ventilator candidates ignoring guidelines, flooding restaurants/bars, etc as young people. I'd say it's roughly the same.

But - no - it wasn't ANY muh freedom protesters it was ONLY BLM protesters. No, it wasn't skipping steps in reopening, it was young people ONLY not following guidelines.

I don't think it is confirmation bias. In my experience it has been about evenly divided between the adolescents and seniors, but seniors are the ones taking their giant families to the restaurants, and packing the dive bars or filling up all the seats at the bar in the aforementioned restaurants as "regulars" while younger people tend to pack the clubs/college bars.

Three are now hospitalized: Barbosa's parents Frank and Carole, along with his sister Kathy, who is battling breast cancer.

Confirmed & Probable Counts

As of April 14, 2020, CDC case counts and death counts include both confirmed and probable cases and deaths. This change was made to reflect an interim COVID-19 position statement by the Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists on April 5, 2020. The position statement included a case definition and made COVID-19 a nationally notifiable disease. Nationally notifiable disease cases are voluntarily reported to CDC by jurisdictions.

A confirmed case or death is defined by meeting confirmatory laboratory evidence for COVID-19.

A probable case or death is defined by one of the following:

Meeting clinical criteria AND epidemiologic evidence with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for COVID-19
Meeting presumptive laboratory evidence AND either clinical criteria OR epidemiologic evidence
Meeting vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for COVID19
Not all jurisdictions report confirmed and probable cases and deaths to CDC. When not available to CDC, it is noted as N/A.

Accuracy of Data

CDC does not know the exact number of COVID-19 illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths for a variety of reasons. COVID-19 can cause mild illness, symptoms might not appear immediately, there are delays in reporting and testing, not everyone who is infected gets tested or seeks medical care, and there may be differences in how jurisdictions confirm numbers.

Changes & Fluctuations in Data

Health departments may update case data over time when they receive more complete and accurate information.

The number of new cases reported each day fluctuates. There is generally less reporting on the weekends and holidays.

Differences between CDC and Jurisdiction Data

If the number of cases or deaths reported by CDC is different from the number reported by jurisdiction health departments, data reported by jurisdictions should be considered the most up to date. The differences may be due to the timing of the reporting and website updates.

If the number of cases or deaths reported by CDC is different from the number reported by jurisdiction health departments, data reported by jurisdictions should be considered the most up to date. The differences may be due to the timing of the reporting and website updates.

Epidemiological studies can never prove causation; that is, it cannot prove that a specific risk factor actually causes the disease being studied. Epidemiological evidence can only show that this risk factor is associated (correlated) with a higher incidence of disease in the population exposed to that risk factor.

Presumptive tests
 Can establish the possibility that a specific
bodily tissue or fluid is present

Presumptive

 Can use on larger areas
 Can locate evidence not
visible to naked eye
 Sensitive

Last week we had a senior care resident test positive, then 2 days later test negative, then positive again. I’ve heard that the really expensive antibody tests are reliable but the cheaper and quicker tests aren’t.

Following reports that TMC had reached 97 percent capacity, Dr. Marc Boom, Houston Methodist president and CEO, said ICU capacity percentages in the 80s or 90s is "completely normal."

“If this trend continues, our hospital system capacity will become overwhelmed, leading us to make difficult choices of delaying much-needed non-COVID care to accommodate a greater number of COVID patients,” the group wrote.

So Hays High School just had its graduation. 600 kids... with parents...

They did most of it outside, but still, the kids stopped social distancing, and took their masks off to talk to each other.

Absolutely 100% that someone there had it. Most probably a good hundred or so people there had COVID (based on 3% gen pop infection rate, just a guess).

Welcome to the superspreading event for central texas.

You can do the math yourself. Figure 97% chance that any given person is negative. take .97 to the 600th power, to get the chance that none of the students had it. each student could have 2 guests.

.97 to the 1800th power.

Odds are at that 3% infection rate that quite a few of them had it. milling around, clustering at exits. Holy fuck.

But even the largest protests in this state, in Austin and in Houston, had about 60k people present, the vast majority with masks, in outdoor daytime settings. On the other hand, you have literally millions of people on a daily basis congregating in groups in indoor settings with a much lower amount of mask usage. Even when you ignore the different contexts of these environments, the orders of scale on what happens in normal society and at protests are just orders of magnitude different.

But all that being said, if you group 60k people together during a pandemic, it is impossible to avoid spread and I am 100% sure that a portion of the new cases are a direct result of that.

Exactly. 60k in Houston out of a metro area with 7 million people isn't exactly a huge number. On the other hand, how many people were in indoor dining areas or bars? WAY more than 60k over the past month.

And so, it's fucking stupid to politicize the issue by responding to the second round of closures with "muh protests." This shouldn't be a political issue. This should be a science issue. Why the fuck do we need to acknowledge protests likely caused some spread -- it's like we're at AA introducing ourselves as alcoholics.

Why are masks political at this point? I honestly don't know what people who politicize this think. The virus isn't just going to go away if you close your eyes and pretend it doesn't' exist, yet one political faction in this country has a leader who is saying exactly that and has people who follow him regardless of predictable outcomes. Honestly, this is no different than other forms of science denial by "conservatives" in this country, but this unlike something like climate change, this time the results of denial are weeks not decades.

And to what end? I mean with climate change it results in certain people getting rich at the cost of others, but who the fuck benefits from COVID coming roaring back? It's just so fucking stupid.

But anyway, acknowledging that it is a contributor factor at least removes that particular bad faith argument from the table. Don't even have to mention that going to a protest against the state killing people with an out of control police force is pretty different than going to a business to pay for an overpriced drink but yeah.

vy65

It'd be so much more honest to take the position that all the science shows us that this thing will be with us for a long time, that we simply can't protect everyone to the fullest extent that we'd like, and that we have to make hard decisions and compromise to allow people to make a living. One of the many reasons why this country has failed is because epidemiology is politicized now.
