No problem at all.

Raulerson is a solid bet. OrangeBloods actually visted Celina HS on their way back from Shreveport on Wednesday. I'm assuming it was some sort of prep and an opportunity to write Raulerson's commitment article ahead of time.

Raulerson reminds me of my new favorite NFL player JJ Watt, if he can develop into that we got ourselves a player.

Would love to see him play some situational fullback blocking for Gray.

Bill-

The first time I saw the rumor was about two weeks ago on the blog OrangeBloods publishes every now and then. It's picked up steam ever since that day. I'm assuming the Raulersons and the staff planned everything out when he last visited Austin. Great way to start the class off with some momentum. He'll be 2013's Brewer when it comes to recruiting everyone else.

ESPN did preview of some guys they expect to be national top 100 prospects for 2013 from Texas -

Jake Raulerson (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/135079/jake-raulerson), OT, Celina: Big-framed, high-ceiling tackle with very good foot quickness and agility.

Kohl Stewart (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/142585/kohl-stewart), QB, Saint Pius X: Excellent physical tools yet still has the upside to mature in many areas. Committed to Texas A&M.

Keith Ford (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/143558/keith-ford), RB, Cypress Ranch: A hard, durable runner who can get the tough inside yards or get outside.

Jamar Gibson (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/140412/jamar-gibson), WR, Sterling: An explosive receiver with a great mix of size, speed and strength. Committed to Texas A&M.

Derrick Griffin (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/143537/derrick-griffin), WR, Terry: A big-framed, athletic receiver with tight end potential at college level. Committed to Texas A&M.

Darius James (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/133555/darius-james), C, Harker Heights: A big, versatile interior lineman on offense with potential value at DL.

Justin Manning (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/138688/justin-manning), DT, Kimball: An overpowering interior lineman who can cause disruption versus the run and pass.

We could potentially have 4 of the top 5 and 5 of the top 7 on Tfloss' list in the not too distant future. Don't know about A'Shawn as Jesus is high on him wanting to stay close to home and liking Texas a lot while 24/7 has him as a longshot and likely OOS guy. Also, one thing I took for Mack's PC the other day was when he talked about asking the kids who committed early then flipped what made them committ do early if they weren't sure. He said to a man their answers were "well coach my parents basically made me because it guaranteed I would at least have college paid for". I wonder if Golden fits in this commit early as a safety blanket group.

Golden's recruitment will be fun to watch. Being from Elysian Fields, I imagine he feels comfortable in College Station because it doesn't have a big city feel. It's my understanding that he hasn't visited any other campuses yet. Reminds me of last year when we were saying similar things about DT Malcom Brown. He didn't change his tone about A&M until he got out of his comfort zone and saw what different schools had to offer. I don't expect Bo Davis to give up on this one but the Ags got a nice prospect for the time being.

A&M has a couple great early commits, no doubt.

Kohl is considered big risk to go baseball route. griffin has stated if he grows any more he will likely focus solely on basketball. i think both are quite possible if not likely.

i'm almost certain Kohl (and maybe Gibson as well) are both ag legacies. griffin also has some close friends that are going to A&M. figured some may question why they committed so early.

i'm not sure the story with Golden. we may have just got beat on him. likely the depth at DT was not attractive at Texas.

With Raulerson, Cottrell, Shiro Davis, Ridgeway and Bluiett aboard, I think Texas should take their time recruiting 2013 DEs. I like Lancaster DE Daeshon Hall better than Lawton, OK DE D.J. Ward. I'd take either to round out the 2013 DE class.

Quotes from OL/DL Jake Raulerson on his commitment to UT. You can already tell what kind of influence he's going to have over this 2013 class:

"It's great to finally have it done. I'm beyond belief to have this opportunity. I'm happy to say I'm a Longhorn," Raulerson said. "The stress is gone right now and I'm very, very happy."

"The coaching staff is great. They've been recruiting me at both positions (offensive line and defensive line) so there's a very good chance at some point of getting early playing time. Early playing time was not a factor at all but it's always good to have that option," Raulerson said. "They're one of the few that did recruit me at both offensive tackle and defensive end and they're even thinking about tight end. All that together works great."

"I think they're going to win the title in the next few years. They have a great recruiting class right now and they're getting better and I think they're a great program. One of the keys is coach (Bennie) Wylie, the strength and conditioning coach. He's one of the best in the country. Me and him really clicked when we started talking. He's just a guy you want to be with working hard in the weight room. He's working with you so you know he's doing everything he can to make you better. He's a great coach and knows exactly how to make you better. I mean look at the guy. He's huge."

"I think if I'm committed to a school then that's where I need to be," Raulerson said". I've visited every school you can think of so it's not like I don't have a clear view of every school. I've looked everywhere around the country and I know everything about them."

"I checked out Stanford just to see how it was and I loved Stanford and everything about it. But the distance … it's California and my parents can't go all the way out there. I definitely want my parents to come out and see me. Four hours to Austin is not that bad," Raulerson said. "Everyone can come and see me. Not everyone can buy a plane ticket to California to watch me. It's a combination of everything. It's not one key thing that drew me to Texas, but I'm from the state of Texas and I love the school."

They're both right. 24/7 is referring to Flenory in his ear. Here's quote from them this morning on the matter:

"On Robinson, I think some folks are worried about the people he has loosely associated with off the field and them playing a potential role in his selection (and that would not be a positive for Texas). Not talking about family or coaches, but others who I am told are trying to be party to the recruitment."

They're both right. 24/7 is referring to Flenory in his ear. Here's quote from them this morning on the matter:

"On Robinson, I think some folks are worried about the people he has loosely associated with off the field and them playing a potential role in his selection (and that would not be a positive for Texas). Not talking about family or coaches, but others who I am told are trying to be party to the recruitment."

it's the subjective nature of how much stock you place on 'potential' versus being a proven commodity. the thing on swoopes is that the sky is the limit. but other recruits including some texas QB's certainly look more polished.

Excerpt from Jeff Howe's analysis on Raulerson:

Where he can improve:
That depends on where Raulerson ultimately plays.
If he does indeed begin his Texas career at defensive end, he'll be more of a power end. I think he'd be a great compliment to a potentially elite edge rusher like Torshiro Davis. The big adjustment will be getting used to playing wider as he plays closer to the ball at the high school.
Raulerson's natural position on offense is center, and if he gets big enough to move over to offense he could be a long-term answer there for Texas. He can play multiple positions, but there's a lot to be determined if Raulerson ever makes the jump.
Overall impression:
Raulerson is one of those guys that barring something unforeseen (injury, off the field issues, etc.) should be a highly-productive college player. I think his best position long term is either as a 3-4 defensive end, or at center.

No matter where he plays, the thing you love about Raulerson as a prospect is his motor, his passion for the game, and the fact that he's got talent maximizer written all over him. When you take those things into account and add his talent to the equation, you see why Texas is taking him as the first commitment in the class.

DE in the 2012 class went from being a question to mark to Texas locking up Ridge and Torshiro on opposite ends of the defensive line. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch. Ridge is an animal and I don't think anyone in the class developed physically as well as he has in the past year.

Floss, this is what I've got so far with who I think we end up with. Feel free to add/subtract as I am not an expert.

QB - Swoopes

RB - Gonzalez?

OT - Raulerson, Perkins

OG - Thomas

C - James

TE - RSJ, Smythe

WR - Oliver, Samples, Massington

DT - Manning

DE - Hollins

LB - Hughes, Wade

CB - Barrows, Davis

S - 2 of Miles, Baltimore, Harris

So far 19. Don't know if we can take more than that without a bunch of attrition.

Manning may be the best defensive player in the state for 2013. Unfortunately, we appear to be in 3rd behind OU and LSU with him. I believe he is an OU legacy.

Jake Oliver is an A&M legacy, but we may have a decent shot at him.

Bad year for legacies out there.

So i checked out S Marcell Harris' highlight film and honestly i wasnt overly impressed, especially with his tackling abilities. He seemed to tackle high and he didnt seem to bring much punch behind it. Its hard to evaluate his cover skills on tape but im guessing thats his strength. Akina has approved and praised him so thats worth alot. He has seen him in action in person at camps so that speaks in higher volumes than tapes i guess.

Very simply, if Mark Richt could lock up Georgia, the Dawgs would win the SEC regularly. There's an amazing amount of talent in Georgia. I wish there was some way that Texas could get a recruiting foothold there. It's a highly competitive state for recruiting, UGA, Florida, Georgia Tech, FSU, Alabama, Auburn, and Vanderbilt all recruit the state hard.

Well Raulerson is already in, obviously. I think RSJ, Darius James, Kent Perkins, Durham Smythe and Deon Hollins Jr. commit at the First Junior Day. That would give Texas 6 commitments conservatively.

At the Second Junior Day, I think West Mesquite teammates Eldridge Massington, and Kameron Miles receive offers and commit. That would give Texas 8 by the end of month.

I expect a few surprise commitments too, there's always surprises. I've predicted Tyrone Swoopes as a surprise commitment, and I'll stick with it until I hear something differently. The word is Harsin really wants Swoopes, and believes he'll land him.

Additionally, I'm hearing good things on Justin Manning. A commitment at JD1 wouldn't surprise me. With Manning in the fold Bo Davis could focus on flipping Golden, the spring evaluations and OOS players.

billfromlaketravis

I'd add that I expect Texas to sign 2 QBs in the 2013 class. McCoy will be a junior this season. While I'm optimistic on Overstreet, I think he's a niche QB, at least early in his career. I like the Junior Day QB invitations. Swoopes, Barrett and Hill are the 3 best dual threat QBs in the state, and it's not really close.

I think the plan is to get Swoopes, and then get Kenny Hill.

I know Manning was considered a heavy OU lean, but the problems there combined with his brother not having the best of experiences in Norman might take away from that. Add that Wyatt was the brother's recruiter when he went to OU so he knows the family and Texas making him #1 DT priority and you have a recipe for pulling an upset.

If Howell is the last DT we lose between now and Feb of '13 I wonder how many DTs they'll take in this class.

I saw that Marcell Harris is not coming to the first JD on the 12th nor is he listed on the 2nd JD. Can we assume that his interest in Texas is fading or are we still a legit contender for him? I am curious to what everyone thinks though. Is he the better of the safties that include Baltimore and Miles? From his video, the ball seems to find the way to the ground when he is in on a tackle and that is what Texas needs. More strips and more turnovers. Reminds me of the 2005 defense. They were constantly stripping and forcing fumbles. I know he is an OOS recruit but from his talk on Texas, he seems to be high on us. Hmmmm...

Harris and his family visited Texas in January during the Army All American Combine which is held in San Antonio. Juniors participate in the Combine, seniors play in the bowl. The Harris Family also visited Texas during the summer. The Texas coaches told the Harris that he didn't need to attend a Junior Day to receive his offer. Harris was offered by Texas last week immediately following National Signing Day. Texas would like Harris to visit during the June camps. If he makes it during June, he could be on campus 3 days rather than 1 day for a Junior Day. Obviously a better visit situation.

A lot of people are going to compare Harris' recruitment to Nelson Agholor's. Agholor made it pretty plain that he wants to be a WR. It could be the reason Texas pulled out. Harris wants to be a safety, Akina wants him as a safety. I don't think we'll pull out. I think Texas works this one until the end.

I like Miles better than Baltimore. Baltimore is a little faster, but Miles is a better player in my opinion. Both will be at JD2.

Quotes from TE Durham Smythe before the first Junior Day. Safe to say he's going to be offered since he's speaking with Mack and the staff has already emphasized they're going to be focusing on TEs in 2013. Just FYI that Smythe's father played at Baylor and is a doctor.

"About two weeks ago, Manny Diaz came during school. They pulled me out of class and it was more of a casual hello. About a week after that, my coaches called me in and told me they had invited me to the February 12 junior day. I've talked to coach (Bryan) Harsin, I've talked to coach (Mack) Brown a little," Smythe said. "I'm just excited to meet all of them and see what happens on Sunday."

"I like Texas, Stanford and TCU. I also like Notre Dame but I haven't talked to them as much. I'm going to talk to them this week and find out more what's going on there," Smythe said. "I would like to look around all four schools I'm interested in before I make a commitment but I'm not one of those people who plans on dragging it out."

"There's a number of things I like about Texas. With me, my decision is going to come not just from the football program, which is obviously a big part of it, but also academics," Smythe said. "Texas is a fantastic school. Coach Brown was talking to me the other day, I told him I might want to go to medical field - he talked about the doctors that have come through the program under him. I think there are five doctors and two dentists. Also the prestige of the program. And I know David Ash pretty well."

"If I had to focus on one thing, it would probably be versatility. I can play the regular tight end position, which I do the majority of the time. In certain sets in high school I'll flex out into the slot or wide receiver positions," Smyth said. "I'm weighing 227 right now. I'd also like to put on more weight and become a better blocker."

I think LSU might have left the door open for Texas on Ishmael Wilson by not offering this weekend. Maybe they just didnt do there homework on him, Considering that Ishmael Wilson is one of the best offensive lineman in the state and probably would have committed to LSU because of his love for the school which has been openly publicized. Kids usually cherish that first offer, I just think its a big deal that may play in Texas' hands by him not being offered when LSU had a opportunity.

It's definitely best case scenario for the UT staff right now. The only question is; how long will Wilson allow LSU to slow-play him? He's made it clear LSU is where he wants to be, so I worry that they can grab him whenever they want even if he does commit to Texas at some point. The good thing is he's friends with Norman and Riser and does like Texas. I'm not factoring him into the equation right now but UT will give it their best shot this weekend and continue to stay on him.

Some random notes from Hook 'Em 24/7 this morning:

**Duane Akina and the UT staff are searching high and low for DBs right now which is one of the reasons why there won't be any attending the first Junior Day. Not only do they like several in-state prospects that are pure DBs such as S George Baltimore and S Kameron Miles, but they are also in the process of evaluating prospects who play positions other than defensive back (QB, WR, etc.). Worth noting that the staff is receiving interest from at least three out-of-state DBs in additon to S Marcell Harris.

**Texas is pushing hard for RB Dontre Wilson right now. He had conversations with both Applewhite and Chambers last week and it was made clear to him that he will be receiving an offer on Sunday. UT is one of his favorites because of the DeSoto connection and he has many friends that are currently Longhorns, but Oregon continues to be a factor in his recruitment. He's scheduled to unofficially visit their campus in March and he'll also make a trip to Oklahoma State on February 18th.

**RB Keith Ford is not expected to be in Austin on Sunday. Not a lot of detail has been given about his thought process, but Texas doesn't have a lot of momentum here seeing as how he's a Florida native and their RB depth chart is stacked for at least two more years. He's thought to be favoring OU, Notre Dame and the main Florida schools. Alabama is supposed to be getting involved soon as well.

**WR Jake Oliver and DT Justin Manning reportedly received official offers from the UT staff this past Friday before their scheduled trips to Norman. Luckily for UT, Manning did not make the trip as we've discussed above and he was supposedly pretty pumped about hearing from the Longhorns. Oliver is still considered to be a UT lean.

Here's a good post worth reading from El Mahico who is one of the "insiders" over on OrangeBloods. He's known to have connections to Akina.

word going around that he (Raulerson) is already helping Texas make up some ground on a few guys. Also, person i talked to this morning said Texas has as many as 7 guys just ready to make it official. And they aren't jags. Think top 25 in the LSR.

Said he expects to come out of junior days with about 10-12 commits and then start evaluating some OOS recruits and other kids in the state. Going to be an interesting spring.

in terms of the team, he said reports are that Ash is really responding well to the tweaks made in his delivery. Ash also was working with a QB coach over the last couple of weeks to keep the ball up high so he can get rid of it faster. He's responding well. Said he expects a big year from the true sophomore.

Said a few guys are really having a tough go of it with the workouts. Said there have been reports that a few guys aren't showing up consistently. Might be something to keep an eye on because this team isn't going to let that fly. I asked him if he thought some attrition would be happening after the spring and he said:

"i think that's fair to say at this point. Some guys just really are having a hard time buying in right now. Part of that was the laid back culture they experienced in 2010. The spring of 2010, we probably had a consistent 60-70% turn out for volunteer workouts. The spring of 2011 was better, but still not great. That just can't happen. More than anything, that's what killed the 2010 and 2011 seasons. It's clear that the guys who don't want to work are going to be left out. That's why so many left the program after this year. They just didn't want to work for it. It was just about PT. Those guys didn't want it bad enough. And i'm sure there's a few more that will end up leaving. "

Good point. Texas was able to get Kendall, Daje, and Dalton late in recruiting based off of their initial love for the school. Still in all, people are different, and hopefully he looks at it as a insult and develops a "prove u wrong" type of attitude about it. It helps that he has friends within the program as well.

More from El Mahico. Exciting if true.

good grief. Bo Davis, Searels and Wyatt coupled with Applewhite and Diaz are making some serious noise around the state right now. I cannot express how much more gifted these coaches are all the way around than the previous staff. If what I heard just now was true, the first junior day is going to be the best Mack has had yet.

If I'm Texas, I find a way to keep Diaz, Applewhite, Wyatt, Searels and Davis as long as I can because whatever these guys are doing it's making an impact on coaches and players at the HS level. They are putting on a clinic in the state now that these guys have been together for a year. Next weekend is going to be exciting.

Recent quotes from QB Tyrone Swoopes via Hook 'Em 24/7:

“I like Texas,” Swoopes said. “I've talked to the coaches and talked with Coach (Mack) Brown a little bit. I've been down there a few times and I like it down there.”

“I'm pretty sure,” Swoopes said of the chance that Texas offers. “We'll see.”

“They're pretty high up there,” Swoopes said. “They've shown a lot of interest and I've visited there already, so they're pretty high up.”

“I think I fit pretty well because when they want to run I feel like I can make things happen,” Swoopes said. “When they want to throw the ball, I feel like I can get the job done there, too.”

“I've been running the spread since I was in the seventh grade,” Swoopes said. “I like running the zone read.”

“Probably being comfortable where I'm at and with the coaches,” Swoopes said. “The atmosphere and the community are important because I want to go somewhere I'm comfortable if I'm going to have to live there for four years.”

More Junior Day updates from Hook 'Em 24/7:

**ATH Jacorey Warrick is expected to attend UT's second Junior Day. Just a reminder that he picked up an offer from Oklahoma last weekend. He could be one of many names that Akina is evaluating at DB despite being a great WR.

**A name some of us have been waiting on to surface is DE/LB Mike Mitchell of Plano Prestonwood Christian (formerly of Plano West). The staff has been in contact in the past week and he's expected to receive a Junior Day invitation soon. Texas could be facing an uphill battle in this recruitment (much like RB Keith Ford) because Mitchell is a Florida native and a long-time fan of the Gators.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Mike-Mitchell-133392

**S George Baltimore has had a Junior Day invitation for a while now, but he's saying he's still unsure whether he'll make it Austin because he has several Junior Days he wants to attend. Some quotes from him:

“I'm going to Texas A&M (Feb. 18), and then LSU at the end of the month,” Baltimore said. “I want to make it to Texas, but I've got a lot of schools who want me to go, so I'll have some tough decisions to make.”

“I like Texas a lot,” he said. “I know they're going after Marcell Harris and their numbers are tight, but I like them a lot. I've always liked Texas. I get letters from them, but I want to really talk with Coach (Bruce) Chambers to find out how interested they are.”

**A rather new name is on UT's radar in CB Maurice Smith of Fort Bend Dulles (same school as S Sheroid Evans). The do-it-all man/track star received an offer this past weekend from LSU and he's expected to receive an invite to the second UT Junior Day. His area recruiter is Oscar Giles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao0-RZzFzOI

**Lastly, the high school teammate of DE Torshiro Davis, DT Christopher Robinson, will be attending the second Junior Day. We've heard his name as a possible DT offer for 2013 since he camped with UT this past summer.

I tend to be cautious when reading any posts like that, but I like them because they're fun. I usually don't take anything like that very seriously but they're great for the casual reader who may not be up to speed. I agree that those last few posts were something like Nostradamus would say where things are vague and left for interpretation, but he's been right in the past. Hopefully he can elaborate on everything once the weekend comes to a close and it's by design that he can't be specific. To his credit, he's usually more precise with his info.

Quotes from RB Dontre Wilson of DeSoto:

"That's the only one (Texas Junior Day) I've had a chance to make. I was supposed to go to A&M's but I had to take my SAT that day," Wilson said. "I haven't heard much from [Texas]. I'm just trying to go down there and have fun and enjoy myself. I want to view the campus more and try to extend my like for Texas."

"I'm going to A&M this week, I think on Wednesday to view the campus," Wilson said.

"I'll probably make it (final decision) in the middle of senior year, probably after football season," Wilson said.

"Really, just how they (a future school) treat the people, how good I get along with everybody, and how much fun you can have at the college," he said.

"Right now, Oregon's offense fits me the best. That's the kind of offense I like," Wilson said. "I'm not saying I'm going to go there, but that's the kind of offense I like."

Quotes from OL Patrick Morris of Denton Guyer:

"Unforgiving, more than anything, because if the other person makes a mistake they're going to see the way I play," Morris said. "I will put them on the ground and make them not want to play the next play, so my job gets easier."

"I just got invited to Texas's junior day (Feb. 25) and Tech's junior day (Feb. 18)," Morris said. "I'm really looking forward to those."

"Hopefully Texas or Tech will be the first (offer) because I really like those schools," Morris said. "They both have good educations and plus they're in Texas and I would rather stay in Texas. Texas schools just sound better because I've lived in Texas."

"Texas, they called our coach on Sunday, I think, and wanted me to come to junior day. They were looking at Ellis Jefferson from our school and they saw me too," Morris said.

"Out of all the schools that are contacting me, probably Texas," Morris said naming his current favorite. "I grew up in Texas and they have a real good education and they always dominate at football. This year wasn't one of their greatest years, but they went to a bowl game and won. They look very good for the future since a lot of their guys are young guys."

"I've definitely been working on snapping with my offensive line coach since offseason started so I could be more versatile," Morris said. "I'm getting better and I'm starting to like it because it's more up close and personal and there's not all the distance between me and the defensive lineman."

"I'm hoping to power clean at least 365 or 380 by the end of this offseason, and squatting 600 and benching 400 definitely," he said.

All in all I'd bet we land 6-7 of the early top 10. RSJ, Perkins, and James are all considered likely to commit this weekend, and I wouldn't be shocked if all 3 did. With Swoopes as our priority at QB I would be surprised if he doesn't end up at Texas, although he may likely take a lot at some other schools. Robinson seemed locked up but recent chatter makes me think he is no guarantee, but I gotta think we are the team to beat. Overall, things are looking up considering we have a great shot at some OU/A&M legacies in Manning and Oliver. However, I gotta write off getting one of the top 1-2 RBs in the class with our backfield.

1 Tyrone Swoopes , QB
2 Ricky Seals-Jones, ATH
3 Derrick Griffin, WR A&M
4 Kent Perkins, OT
5 Justin Manning, DT
6 A'Shawn Robinson, OL/DL
7 Darius James, OG/C
8 Dontre Wilson, RB
9 Jake Oliver , WR
10 Jake Raulerson, OL/DL TEXAS

Let me clarify on that, RSJ has indicated in interviews that he wants to start off at TE. I think that's a reasonable request. Play him as a WR as his body develops into a TE.

LSU offering Maurice Smith on the same weekend that they didn't offer Ish Wilson tells me all I need to know. Smith can ball. Nahlin loves the kid.

Pass on Patrick Morris. The mean streak is nice, but Darius James is light years better. Feels like an evaluation visit all the way.

Quotes from OL/DL Jake Raulerson from Hook 'Em 24/7:

“It's a little less stressful,” Raulerson said. “I can focus on what's in front of me now and just enjoy being a Longhorn and enjoy life.”

“I think it's an honor just to be in a position to be the first commit in a class and have all of the responsibility that comes with it,” Raulerson said. “I think it's cool to be in the position now to be able to recruit guys.”

“I think I've got the personality for that role and I think I get people to come on down,” Raulerson said. “There are a lot of great players in this state and I'm looking forward to seeing who we can add to the group.”

“He had a huge impact,” Raulerson said. “As a player, you spend most of your time with the strength coach and Bennie Wylie is very good at what he does. Just knowing what he has planned, I have no doubt that his program will help me reach my potential. I can't wait to get started with him.”

“It's a huge deal,” Raulerson said. “Texas is a very prestigious school, and it's a tremendous honor to be able to say you were the first from your school to do something at a place like Texas.”

Mondays in the Humidor With The Big Cigar
Mondays in the Humidor With The Big Cigar: February 8

If you’re looking at the Longhorn Program as a whole, you’d see that the Rise of Texas is upon you. Fresh off of inking a consensus top 3 2012 class the Longhorns are already making serious in-roads with the top players in-state to ensure a stellar 2013. Most of those super-studs will be on campus this weekend for Junior Day 1, and a handful of the state’s best will fall. To that point, the Big Cigar tells us the staff has big plans for this weekend, or, in other words, this isn’t going to be a typical junior day.

The Cigar tells us that Texas is pulling out all of the stops and making it a bona fide recruiting visit for these prospects. More on that in a moment. Finally, the Cigar was first to unveil the term “County Fair” into the Longhorn lexicon on this very site, and he’ll shed some light on what amounts to Bennie Wylie’s Navy SEAL styled “hell week”. Put a big burnt orange bow on all of that and feel comfortable knowing this program is doing everything in its power to get back to prominence, and step inside the Humidor.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Obviously let’s start with the star-studded 2012 class that was just inked. I’m sure the staff is excited but any details on who they’re excited about?

Big Cigar: They love Gray and what he brings to the table on and off the field. I told you last March that Gray and his father wanted to commit to a school with a good stable of running backs so he could share carries and save the wear and tear on his body, and that was Texas. Johnathan is a very unselfish young man so he’s willing to give up some of the limelight for the good of the team and the good of his body. He was one of the leaders of this class because he’s got a magnetic personality and down to earth. Couple those attributes with his work ethic and it’s easy to project him being a leader in the program from day 1. Regardless of what you hear to the contrary, he’s Harsin’s Wildcat back next fall.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about the other side of the ball?Any details you can share?

Big Cigar: Coach Diaz has accumulated a lot of talent with this class and for the most part all of the players fit into his philosophy of putting Swiss-Army knife athletes at every position. Big guys that can run, cover, rush the passer, fill a hole, you name it. He wants to be able create havoc and confusion on the field with a bunch of kids that aren’t pigeon-holed into one assignment. Ridgeway, Shiro, Jinkens, Santos, Colbert, Thomas, Brown, Norman, Bluiett, Boyette, Cottrell, Vaccaro etc. can all do different things and play different positions. There are very few specialists in this class and that’s the key to Manny’s Fire Zone scheme. That’s all been rehashed but it sets up the more interesting side of things.
The staff feels like they can be even more selective on the type of player they want after getting a year recruiting for Texas under their belt. Guys like Bo Davis and especially Manny Diaz were shocked by how quickly kids said yes when asked if they’d commit so they’ve had to recalibrate how they finesse the slow-play side of the recruiting game. They’ve opted to implement a sort of “good-cop bad cop” strategy where the position coach will say to a player they want to slow-play, “You’re the top player on my position board, but the DC or the HC wants me to continue to evaluate. If it was up to me I would pull the trigger with an offer.”
It helps the kid from getting his feelings hurt and allows the staff more time to evaluate.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about the last second switches of Santos and Davis?Any insight?

Big Cigar: On Santos, Manny flat told the kid that he made a huge mistake not offering right away. I’m told Manny did a tremendous job getting back in with Santos and it’s a good thing because I’m also told that the defensive staff thinks Santos may be one of the top 5 players in the class when it’s all said and done. The kid plays with his hair on fire and knocks the snot out of people. Diaz also loves that he’ll be able to move Santos around everywhere?as a thumper in the running game or a pass rusher. And when he hits you, he hurts you, at least that’s what some of our committed players said in the Under Armor game.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Let’s shift gears to Junior Day 1. Who do you think gets offered and who commits based on what you’re hearing?

Big Cigar: They’re looking to get commits from some kids that will continue to recruit for the program. So look for one or two more of those types to get offers to go along with Raulerson. Naashon Hughes is a kid they’ll ask to get into the fold quickly because he’s an engaging guy and has ties with other players. I can’t see Hughes not jumping aboard because he’s the top OLB on our board and his brother just signed. If we get a commit from Hughes look for Darius James to fall as well. The TE out of Belton, Smythe, will be offered I’m told and he’ll probably commit. After that Kent Perkins is the next best candidate to commit.
Ricky Seals-Jones is another kid that everyone wants to play with so he’s a shoe-in to get offered and asked to be a leader in this class and I’m told the staff likes where they stand with Jones, but they don’t know if he’ll commit. Like I told you before, don’t expect the staff to get double digit commits like last season. They’re going to be more selective.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about the Tyrone Swoopes saga?Do you have any insight into the staff’s thought process?

Big Cigar: I do, but I can’t get into specifics because it will hurt the program. I will say that they like Swoopes and project him to be a special player. They will tell him as much. I can also tell you that the staff likes Barrett as well and there may be a way to get both. Whether or not that works out will be determined this Sunday.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: That would be great. You mentioned that we’ll be pulling out all the stops on this pseudo-recruiting function. Can you share a little of what you were told?

Big Cigar: We’re going to make this fun for the kids and show them everything our school has to offer. All the coaches are really excited and each of the new guys has added his own input on how we can make the experience a better selling point for the program. I can’t tell you everything I was told would change, but I’ll give you an example. We’re going to have all of the Nike uniform mockups laid out in the locker room for the kids to see. I’m not saying we’re going to wear them next season, but they’ll be there as a suggestive sales pitch. We’ll also show off the bowl game swag bags from this past season and make mention of how much better the swag bags are at a BCS bowl. But that’s just one example. We’re not going to come on too strong, but we know who we’re competing with in terms of getting these young guys to choose our campus.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Mirrored white helmets and combat black uniforms?

Big Cigar: I’m not telling.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Sounds cool. I like the helmet idea, but I prefer the road whites. Speaking of football, talk to me about the first day of “County Fair” this week.
G
Big Cigar: I hear it’s almost too painful to watch. Lots of running and cardio work. There are some cone drills, bag drills, rope stuff, agility stuff, but every position group has a tailored workout to simulate what they’ll do on the football field. It’s pretty brutal but most every player out there is going all out. The ones that aren’t didn’t heed Bennie’s warning to get prepared for County Fair in the weeks leading up.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Sounds like there will be some attrition from this regimen alone.

Big Cigar: Yep, a lot of vomiting and flat out exhausted kids. The good news is that the ones that aren’t selling out are the ones the coaches figured wouldn’t go all-in. There’s nowhere to hide out there so the ones that aren’t competing are the players that will be left behind and lose snaps.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: All the projected starters and two deep are doing well so far?

Big Cigar: All but a couple. I will say that the entire defense has really accepted the challenge well so far. Cobbs, Hicks, and Vaccaro are fanatical about the workouts. On offense, the projected starters on the Oline have had good results especially Hawkins. Hawkins is already a full grown man and acts the part out there.U

The interest is definitely there and he's said he will look at the February 25th date if he is unable to make it this weekend. Also, rumors of OT Josh Thomas of Shreveport, LA not making the first Junior Day were true. He has been bumped to the second Junior Day by the Texas staff. Makes sense if you consider there are four OLs ranked higher than him by the staff that will be receiving offers on Sunday.

**Some more offer updates...QB Tyrone Swoopes has added Alabama, Auburn and Ohio State to his resume recently. QB Cody Thomas picked up a big one in USC.

Good to see Ward finally interested. I like his early favorites, OK State and TAMU. Very manageable. A lot easier to deal with than the Sooners. I personally like Lancaster DE Daeshon Hall better, but Ward is the next best option.

Josh Thomas should be slowed played. I like Perkins, Gustafson, Wilson and Robinson better, in that order. Nice to have a player like Thomas waiting in the wings though.

I really like Mike Mitchell. 6'4'' OLBs with a 40 inch vertical are hard to find. Tremendous athlete. It also doesn't hurt that his younger brother might be the best basketball player in his class.

Texas seems very interested in Hicks. GH just said Hicks is the coaches' top priority at RB in state, and an offer this weekend is very possible.

Wilson favors LSU, will attend UT junior day http://a.espncdn.com/i/in.gif

February, 9, 2012
By Max Olson

Ishmael Wilson (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/144705/ishmael-wilson) (Dallas/Bishop Dunne) wasn’t happy to leave Baton Rouge last weekend without an offer from LSU, but that slight hasn’t hurt the Tigers’ chances of landing one of the state’s top junior offensive linemen.

“My favorite school is LSU, hands down,” he said.

Wilson attended LSU’s junior day last weekend and was confident he’d get his offer. But coach Les Miles had yet to see any film of Wilson’s junior season, and he wouldn’t offer until he spent time breaking down the tape.

For those that don't know, Ricky Seals-Jones and Tyrone Swoopes happen to be pretty tight. So a commitment from RSJ would go a long way with Swoopes. Just another reason an early commit from RSJ would be a huge boost.

Our biggest threat with RSJ is clearly LSU - where he visited last weekend. In a case of perfect timing, read below story on Jordan Jefferson if you have not seen already. Fuel to the fire with the negativity around the LSU program and a nice boost right after RSJ just visited and is about to attend JD1.

“I heard it's (Texas) a beautiful campus and that's what I want to see,” Wilson said. “I want to see a peaceful environment I can see myself in for four or five years.”

“I never really thought about Texas until I moved here,” Wilson said. “It's a good football school, and (2012 four-star defensive tackle Alex Norman) is going down there. I know it's going to be nice.”

“From being at the school (LSU), it's like I was a fan again,” Wilson said. “I couldn't stop smiling. Every room I walked in it was nice. It was amazing.”

“I have to look at it as a player – I can't look at things as a fan,” Wilson said. “I didn't dream of playing against LSU, it was playing for them. I have to make the best decision for myself, though, and that's what everybody who goes through this process has to decide.”

“I like the uniforms and I like what they did this past season,” Wilson said. “I want to see the campus and see what they have to offer. I like Oklahoma State a lot.”

“Those are all the trips (Texas, A&M and OK State) I'm planning on taking,” Wilson said. “If anything, I'll make a decision after I see everything.”

“I want a school that has a sense of urgency to want me there,” Wilson said. “If the school is losing some linemen and there's a chance to me to come in and start if I'm in shape, that's what I'm looking for. I don't mind waiting, but the sooner I can play the better.”

“It's exciting (the recruiting process). I try not to smile when I see the coaches come through,” Wilson said. “It's fun, but I know I still have a senior year and I need make sure I stay on top of my grades. I just have to stay in touch with reality and keep it all in perspective.”

I'm really afraid of the recruitment of Ishmael Wilson. I can already see the future if he commits to Texas in the next months. He commits to Texas because LSU didn't offered, the Texas coaches ignore other great OL bc they already have what they want. Then somewhere in November or December LSU gets in the picture and Wilson switches his commitment and by then we already missed out on the other great OL and we have to settle with a mediocre OL to replace Wilson's scholarship.

He seems way too in love with LSU and WILL go to LSU when they offer and they will sooner or later.

Texas has been in contact for nearly a month but there's no word if he'll be attending the second Junior Day because he says he has limited resources to travel. Two positives so far is he says he has some family in Fort Worth and staying close to home is not a factor in his recruitment "at all." Quotes from his head coach:

"One of the coaches from Texas saw him on film. He said he's the best corner he's seen on film so far," Belles said. "Oklahoma just offered today. Washington offered today. Notre Dame called about him today. Needless to say, he's a really good football player."

"One, he's humble. He doesn't have a big ego, which is nice. He just covers people and makes plays. It's really that's simple," coach Belles said. "He always seems to be in the right place in the right time. He had three of his six interceptions returned for touchdowns. He had a couple punt returns for touchdowns, a fumble return for a touchdown, he's a sure tackler. But the main thing is he's a smart player. Some kids get it, some don't. He just gets it. He's a really good athlete and a good student on top of it."

"He (the UT coach) said it pretty straight up. He said the don't have to go out of state often, it has to be a special kid. He thinks he's a special kid. I'm sure they're doing their due diligence and getting information on him and other kids on their radar from in the state," Belles said. "It sounded to me like they might offer him, but I never heard that come out of the coach's mouth so I can't say for sure."

"Texas was in early on him. This (conversation) was about three weeks ago. They said he was by far best corner they'd seen at that time."

Quotes from WR Jake Oliver per Hook 'Em 24/7:

“I'm just looking to search everything out and not miss anything,” Oliver said. “I don't want to go down there and not pay attention and maybe miss something because I need to feel like it's the right place.”

“Texas will always be Texas,” Oliver said. “I'm from Texas. Everyone from Texas loves Texas. I feel like they're going in the right direction and I feel like they'll be on the right track soon.”

“For a freshman to step in and take a starting role his first season, he (David Ash) didn't do too bad,” Oliver said. “He did pretty good, and he should be improving every year.”

“Right now I'm just taking my junior days and enjoying everything,” Oliver said. “I'm not taking anything for granted. I'm looking at everything and trying to make the right decision for me.”

“We toured around and I was very impressed,” Oliver said. “They showed me a lot of great things I'd never seen before. Being from Texas, I never thought about OU that much, but I had a good time.”

“When I feel it's right, I think I'll do it,” Oliver said. “I don't have a specific day in mind or anything like that.”

“It's got to feel right,” Oliver said. “I'll know when the time comes. Everything about the school, I have to like, and I have to feel it's the right place for me.”

247 is saying if Swoopes does not commit this weekend, they will offer JT Barrett next junior day. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Swoopes has said he wants to wait until end of summer ideally to make a decision.

It will definitely be fun to watch. 24/7 described Swoopes this morning as a "heavy, heavy lean to Texas", so we'll see what happens. The recent interest from big schools like Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Stanford, etc. may be enough for him to temporarily pull back off an early commitment to UT because he could want to take some visits first.

I agree Mex. It felt good switching Dalton, Daje, and Marcus late in the recruiting process. It was exciting for us, but I wouldnt want to be on the other side of the switch. Thats exactly what the Wilson situation has the potential to be.

Kyle Hicks – RB, Arlington (Texas) Martin
Move: From unranked to 145
Quote: "The safety turned running back is new to the rankings after a tremendous junior campaign and recent video evaluation to back it up. The 5-foot-10, 192-pounder has terrific feet in the hole, an elite jump cut, impressive balance, is run finisher in terms of forward lean and falling forward, and has impressive make you miss open field ability." - Gerry Hamilton

Swoopes: I've gotten offers from Notre Dame, Stanford, Oregon, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma, Auburn and Alabama. Thank goodness. The AAU influence on college basketball recruiting disgusts me. Many, many, many national recruiting analysts care to ignore it. The articles after U of H picked up Danuel House and Chicken Knowles were hilarious.

I'm glad Ridley might be ready to tell the third parties to back off and he's going to Texas.

Yeah, im not bagging on Westerman. I disliked the situation. I cant ever be mad at a kid for making the best decision for himself. He was a polished beast at tackle and thats what we needed at the time so i was excited about him being a longhorn and then it all fell apart, with due warning first tho. I kept hope that he might stay but... it was like going from one extreme to the next between excitement and disappointment.

From Hay-sues at IT

----------
QB, Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright
Offer status: Lock.
Quick thoughts: Though Swoopes has been a known commodity for quite some time he's seen his national exposure take off recently with offers from Alabama and Ohio St. He's obviously the top target for the Longhorns at quarterback despite a stellar in-state class at the position and you know how Mack and Co. fare when they give the Cookies and Coffee sell.

Chances for JD1 verbal: 30% Never count out Mack, but a weekend commitment goes against what we've been hearing from Swoopes' coach Jack Wylie for quite some time now.

Long term percentages: 75%

RB, Dontre Wilson, DeSoto
Offer Status: Lock
Quick thoughts: Wilson is perhaps the most dynamic playmaker in the state. Knowing this he has keen awareness in how his abilities would suit Oregon, his presumed leader. He also likes Oklahoma.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 5% Wilson has the feel of a guy that's going to take his time while he sorts through his ever growing offer list.

Long term percentages: 55%

WR, Jake Oliver, Dallas Jesuit
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: Oliver is the staff's number one target at his position and a consensus national 100 player. We hear Oliver has the Horns at the top of his list and that the staff is optimistic of their chances here.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 35% I'm having some weird feelings as I write this that 35% may be a bit low. If there was a surprise commitment over the weekend this could be it.

Long term percentages: 70%

WR, Ra'Shaad Samples, Dallas Skyline
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: The son of Skyline Head Coach Reginald Samples, Ra'Shaad has quite the offer list. Look for UT to attempt to continue their success in the powerhouse program by letting Samples know just how much he's wanted.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 25% I get the feeling that with his impressive list of suitors, Samples may want to take some time.

Long term percentages: 70%

TE, Durham Smythe, Belton
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: The player whose stock is on the verge of causing a bubble has essentially been told he's got an offer waiting as multiple schools try and get him to bat an eye their way.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 60% The Smythe's have a lot of trips currently planned but something tells me that Texas has a chance to cancel reservations this weekend. The only true threat we believe is Stanford.

Long term percentages: 85%

OL, Darius James, Killeen Harker Heights
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: James is the best interior line prospect in the state and maybe the nation and would have many more offers if common sentiment wasn't that he's a UT lock.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 60% That may be a little low for somebody assumed to be a UT lock, but we've been told he wants to take a visit or two to perhaps OU or LSU. Don't fret, if he doesn't commit this weekend it won't be long after.

Long term percentages: 95%

OL, Kent Perkins, Richardson Lake Highlands
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: Go back to our thoughts on James and substitute 'interior line' for 'tackle'.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 80% Out of all the guests, this one feels like it has the best chance going down.

Long term percentages: 95%

OL, Ishmael Wilson, Dallas Bishop Dunne
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: I'm assuming Mack Brown has seen Wilson's film and isn't going to pull a Lester Miles and say through his chlorophyll stained teeth that he hasn't had a chance to see him in action yet.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 20% Though that coveted LSU offer didn't come to Wilson, he could still be holding out for it. If he's not the slightest bit perturbed that LSU didn't offer, that could tell you type of uphill battle Texas is in.

Long term percentages: 45%

OL/DL, Jake Raulerson, Celina
Orange House

OL/DL, A'Shawn Robinson, FW Arlington Heights
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: With UT looking to be in great shape with most of their offensive line recruits, Robinson could get his first look at his preferred position of defensive tackle.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 5% Eric talked to A'Shawn last night and Robinson told him there was 0% chance of committing this weekend. 5% gratuity added to parties the size of Robinson.

Long term percentages: 65%

DT, Justin Manning, Dallas Kimball
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: The brother of former Sooner Demarcus Granger, Manning isn't the OU lock one would assume. Despite rankings that are out, we feel he's the best defensive player in the state.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 10%

Long term percentages: 60%

DT, Vincent Taylor, San Antonio Madison
Offer status: Not likely
Quick thoughts: The staff obviously has interest in Taylor but chances are unlikely that he receives an offer this weekend.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 45% (if offered)

Long term percentages: 60% (if offered)

LB, Naashon Hughes, Killeen Harker Heights
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: The brother of Camrhon Hughes predictably has a fantastic frame. At 6'5" and 215 lbs, Hughes could project at a number of positions.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 60% Eric talked to Naashon recently and Hughes said that both he and James wanted to take a visit or two.

Long term percentages: 100%

ATH, Kyle Hicks, Arlington Martin
Offer status: Not likely (unless it's as an athlete, rather than running back)
Quick thoughts: Could bringing in Hicks the same weekend as Dontre Wilson be a hint to Wilson that Texas has other options at his position?
Chances for JD1 verbal: 50%

Long term percentages: 75%

ATH, Ricky Seals-Jones, Sealy
Offer status: Lock
Quick thoughts: Normally Mack likes to bring in a high profile recruit the day before and extend an offer to get momentum rolling. We're not saying that RS-J is that guy, but a source of ours tells us it's likely that he and his parents will be in Austin Saturday evening (keep in mind the recruits we've talked to are going to Austin Sunday morning). It would be quite telling if he visited the night before.
Chances for JD1 verbal: 40%

I attended a bunch of Dallas Jesuit JV games last fall because my nephew is a player for them.

FWIW, Two or three times Jake Oliver showed up at JV games with a group of friends and the friends all seemed to be wearing Burnt Orange and White.

As an Ag legacy, at the time, I kinda though it would be tough to overcome that. However, sounds like Oliver's dad (who runs a performance training center in Frisco) is allowing his kid to made the best decision for his own situation.

I saw several varsity games as well last fall when my nephew got promoted to varsity to play special teams late in the reg season and in their playoff game and Oliver is the real deal. His height, hands and speed combination allows him to overpower the HS kids he faces.

I would be great next fall to go see my nephew (he also is a WR in Jesuit's 4 wide set) play alongside a big time player like JO - especially if Oliver is a Texas commit. There is a really good chance that my nephew will be one of the top 4 wideouts next year with JO because that position was senior heavy last year outside of Oliver. My nephew was the most productive WR for JV last year as he had double digit TDs.

Shipley and Oliver together in Austin would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Oliver's not a speed burner (4.5-4.6) but he is a really smooth athlete who can make big plays all over the field.

No worries as it's very early in the day. Perkins is the only one worth being upset about even though it would've been nice to formally offer Wilson. Would really love to know the reason on Perkins. It's so early in the recruiting year that probably not much to concern over since there's still 11 1/2 months for a kid to change his mind 20 times. We really need to do a recruiting push to get him in for JD2.

TFloss, what's your thoughts on who's likely to commit or if it'll take a few days for them to start dropping?

I'll definitely post some random thoughts after the day is over. Considering the reports that the staff was going to be more selective this year with their offers and Mack always encouraging kids and their families to take their time if they're not ready to commit then and there, I'm not expecting a huge day. My initial prediction was UT wrapping up Oliver, Perkins, Hughes and maybe James. Historically we've seen a few guys drop a couple of days after or before the second Junior Day comes around. Zero commitments today would be a surprise but nothing to get down about. Texas will get theirs even if it takes some time. A handful of these kids genuinely want to see other schools first which isn't a big deal and usually works in Texas' favor once they're able to make a comparison.

I'll add that in years past most of the commitments happen after lunch. I believe the event lasts until 4 or 5.

Good shot of ATH Ricky Seals-Jones and his family. Looks like TE Durham Smythe in the left corner in his red Belton letter jacket.

I'll definitely post some random thoughts after the day is over. Good stuff. I definitely see no reason to panic on a slow day this year. This staff will work

I personally think thats a good move. He's more likely to come to Texas despite the depth we already have. The other big names probably wont to go somewhere that they can contribute faster or at least have a better chance to break the starting rotation. I think kyle has just as high of potential as the other big name texas running backs, Hicks is just a bit more raw.

Welcome to the thread, sir. Cravens is a beast. I believe he has Texas in his Top 5 and the staff has made contact, but it's way too early. That one should take a while and he'll need to get on campus.

A new name on the radar from 24/7. DE Torrodney Prevot out of Alief Taylor. Diaz and Giles were by his school about two weeks ago to let him know of UT's interest. LSU offered on Friday.

My cousin was an old Oilers fan, but he didn't get "that" feeling when they moved to Tennessee, I did though. But he's still watching NFL, just because of the love to the game, and the love of Vince Young. He recorded the game against USC i '06, and showed it to me a couple of weeks later, my first ever experience with football, and I decided to cheer for Texas before I knew the outcome of the game (I thought they had the most awesome uniforms, simple and clean like I like it). I was sold on the game of football from that moment, and especially the Longhorns.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm a native european, and I still live in Europe.
