Spurs can wait. Signing Aldridge would eliminate a good half-decade of slow decline and mediocrity post-Duncan, which is what once upon a time in the back of our minds we expected.
As much as Spurs fans bitch, Aldridge on the team through the 2018-19 season would put the Spurs in a position to have made the playoffs for 29 out of 30 straight seasons (not to mention extend the championship window). What other franchise in modern professional sports has had such a streak?

My only concern is if the Spurs took their educated gamble (moving Tiago) and LMA chooses POR, how badly does this hurt Tim's chances next two years (definitely next year)?
Plus, I guess if they can't get a bigger FA, they probably pay Duncan more since it won't matter and push the cap room to next year. They definitely don't have an option to take back the Tiago trade, right ? No way ATL could put everything on hold while guys got snatched up.

One more note regarding the Splitter deal: The fact that they straight up salary dumped him to Atlanta for nothing almost certainly means that teams inquiring about him in the draft were asking for assets from the Spurs, not the other way around.

If this is true, then just like I said on the previous page, this guy is a pussy. Why is he so scared of playing a little bit of center? Sometimes, IMO, optimal lineups might be with him playing center in a small ball lineup.
Also, if this guy is that much of a pussy and is scared to even play one minute at center (hence the reason for him looking at Phoenix as they now have Tyson Chandler as their new full-time center), I don't know if I even want him. Surely, if needed, he can play a few minutes at center each game? Maybe the Spurs can look into getting Robin Lopez as a backup center just so LaMarcus doesn't have to play any center, but that is ridiculous if you ask me. If you want to win the Championship, and especially with the way the league is going now, you're going to have to play a bit of small ball, and LaMarcus would be the center in those lineups.
Any idea how much Robin Lopez would cost? Would they have a MLE amount to spend? Maybe they can try and get him to help appease Aldridge a bit. I assume he's going to be out of the Spurs' price range though.

Sometimes we can look at history as a harbinger of things to come. When LaMarcus was entering his freshman year of high school in the Dallas area back in 2000, Dirk Nowitzki had just completed his 2nd year in the league and was becoming an emerging star. Also at this time, there was a prize free agent at another Texas franchise further south. This free agent played the field and took his time coming to a decision. He toyed with the idea of joining the Orlando Magic, forming something along the lines of the Big Three we saw in Miami recently. Instead, he chose to stay at home and return to San Antonio. The key is, he didn't rush a decision. LaMarcus admires Duncan and is doing the same.

Not only is Phoenix a bad choice for the reasons everyone has listed but what about their front office/ownership gives Aldridge any confidence. They ruined the Nash SSOL Suns by being cheap and just ran off their franchise guy who forced a trade to Miami. Forget Mills and Duncan, if there is a second meeting the Spurs should fly Dragic in.

Not sure of the mechanics, but if you haven't submitted the paperwork to the league office and both teams agree at a later date to not do it, I think that works.
Further, even if they notified the league, I think, again, if both parties agree to rescind the trade, then it can be.
Of course, there's always Atlanta flunking Splitter on his physical if the trade needed to be reversed.

This is a very good point. And well said. However, like Duncan in 2000, the longer it draws out the more likely he stays at the place he is now. It's one of the basic recruitment rules. Time kills deals, and if he doesn't find what he's looking for out there, he's more likely to just stay with what he knows (and get paid more). The longer it goes, the better for Portland.
That said, free agency is only 24 hours old. None of us should be remotely impatient at this point.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if that's some of what Duncan told him. Did the whole "man to man, this decision is going to change your life. Take your time and do what you feel is right for you personally. Don't rush it. Spurs wouldn't want me to rush a major decision, and we don't want you to rush one either."
Imo, Spurs wouldn't want to sign someone just for the sake of the team. I know that sounds off, but they're about more than that. They'd want the person they sign to be happy about their decision to live in San Antonio and play basketball with the squad. Quality of life thing. One unhappy dude -- no matter how great he is -- is not only contagious to other players, but it's also just not morally right to have him on your team if he doesn't want to be. Remember when they let Sjax go right before the playoffs?
Spurs are happy to wait it out. Spurs fans on the other hand....

If I had to guess, ATL had a good feel for who they wanted to touch base with in free agency among the first tier free agents. Further, what details are really left? A deal not involving any Hawks contracts would lead to some mix of draft rights and future draft picks. What is left to discuss? Only if the Spurs don't need the cap space because Aldridge or another FA doesn't sign then maybe they take back a contract as opposed to rights and/or picks? That's the only scenario that makes sense, but at the end of the day, even with a salary dump, you aren't trading away the rotting corpse of Brendan Haywood's NBA career. You should receive good value in exchange for Splitter with 2 yrs/$17 mil left, especially with next year's salary cap increase pretty much guaranteeing that every bigman in the league makes $10+ mil per.

You should receive good value in exchange for Splitter with 2 yrs/$17 mil left, especially with next year's salary cap increase pretty much guaranteeing that every bigman in the league makes $10 mil per.
Agreed - wasn't really worried about the details of the trade. More just thinking out loud if there was any shot that Tiago doesn't get traded in the event LMA says no. I dont see any scenario.

As I said in the previous page, I get him wanting to take his time, I guess I can't really have an issue with that, but why in the F is he meeting with teams like this? Honestly, he's wasting his own time and their time. What's the point of meeting with the Knicks and/or teams like the Raptors?Simple..smart ppl dont burn bridges. What if NY looks better in 3yrs and he wants to move? And he already made the commitments to visit so you follow through..simple stuff here. Wont even go into the agent angle/s

Splitter flunks physical.
Spurs & Hawks agreed to rescind trade.
Spurs & Hawks never submitted paperwork ('rumors were bogus')
The lack of any detail is rather telling. Has either organization actually acknowledged that there is a deal? I don't see anything on their websites. So far maybe we have a reporter or two who is held out to dry, but if this was a done deal we'd at least know what the Spurs were getting in return.

If LaMarcus were to go into the meeting with Phil wearing a "Kiss my asterisk" shirt with a Spurs logo, he'd be my hero for life. Wouldn't care where he signed or how many buckets he made...
Actually just making Phil have to get out of his giant chair and stagger to a meaningless meeting is enough for me.

Seeking title contender, Pacers' David West targeting Spurs and Warriors
David West is willing to put his money where his mouth is – even if he loses quite a bit of it in the process.
According to a person with knowledge of his situation, the free agent forward who declined a $12.2 million player option to stay with the Indiana Pacers next season, has serious interest in playing for the San Antonio Spurs or the Golden State Warriors. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the free agency process.
West, the 34-year-old who was an All Star while with the New Orleans Hornets in 2008 and 2009, would have to take a veteran's minimum deal to play with the Warriors ($1.49 million annually) and would likely take a significant pay cut to play for the Spurs. But as he told WTHR's Bob Kravitz in an interview on Wednesday, he is hell-bent on playing for a contender.
"At this point in my career, it's all about winning," West said. "And again, I don't want to be in a position where we're just fighting to make the playoffs, I want to be in a spot where we can legitimately taste the finals."
No better way, then, than to join one of the NBA's past two champions.
The Spurs are currently in the running for free agent forward LaMarcus Aldridge, but West's team-first fabric and reliable production (11.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game last season) would be a tremendous fit.

Can you imagine a big lineup of Duncan / Aldridge / Diaw / West? We'd easily have the best front court in the NBA.
