View Full Version : Marc Stein: Spurs are #1 on LaMarcus Aldridge's list

I don't think the Spurs would take the contract themselves. They probably want to have Cleveland trade it directly to Portland along with Reggie Williams and some incentives. Wouldn't love the deal, but if the Spurs could get LMA and stay over the cap with only losing Diaw, Mills and Williams, it's not a horrible trade-off, though it would make stashing their first-rounder look even worse.
Hmm, didn't think about this scenario. Question, the apron issue with S&T only matters if you are RECEIVING a player in a S&T correct? So CLE could do this since the player being S&T'd is LMA and they aren't getting him, correct?

I mean, I'd do that trade easily if it meant the Spurs bringing in Aldridge and keeping Green. Just pointing out that Mills/Splitter makes Cleveland very good and even more of a virtual lock for the Finals next year.
Whether it's Boris/Mills or Tiago/Mills, I agree. This stacks CLE and is a great use of their Dust Chip IMO. Especially since they will keep Kyrie/Love/Bron/Moz/Thompson and probably sign a few more guys.
Kyrie/Love/Bron/Moz/Thompson/Tiago or Boris/Mills is a great core.

The only indication it might be Splitter is the fact that salaries somewhat match, IIRC. But it doesn't mean Splitter would land on the Cavs. It could easily be a 3 team trade with an unknown third party.
What matters to the Spurs is that they would be able to clear $10m off the books.

Yup Nono - at the end of they day signing LMA while keeping Green is the plan. That's plan ABC. Then if you can luck out and do stuff over the cap to retain MLE and really fill out roster, that's extra bad ass.

Hopefully LMA doesn't take too long, because it's gonna take a lot of juggling and time is of the essence here.
It only takes one offer.
And Dallas will do it just to screw with the Spurs.

Just want to think about the flip side of who is capable of screwing with who here.

This means Manu will loose two of his buds. Timmy is used to loosing his buddies with Antonio Daniels, Malik Rose and Stephen Jackson all dealt out. Manu might take this more personally. I wonder if his decision to sign up for one more year hinges on these trades.

CoJo was spotted in Cleveland during the Finals. If you can S&T him along with Tiago (not sure if that's possible) then that's terrific. CLE is stacked at the front court so maybe they flip Splitter for a 2 guard shooter/scorer (conceivable).
CoJo + Solid SG + any other assets is a sweet haul for Haywood for a team that is limited what they can do this offeseason.

LaMarcus Aldridge Draft Express:
Height without shoes: 6 - 10" (11.25" with)
Standing Reach: 9 - 2"
Wingspan: 7 - 4.75"
Vertical: 34"
All better than Splitter except a quarter inch shorter. Max vertical of 12-0 is 3 inches better than Splitter. Using Splitter since this is a possible roster swap out situation.
This is a very legit big we are after here.

Not really seeing that. But, I could see TP having some influence over whether Diaw could be traded rather than Splitter. That may be why we see no indication of that possibility.

Listening to the Lowe Post podcast with Zach Lowe and Marc Stein, and they mention that since February there has been the idea of Aldridge going to the Spurs because he's very interested in being the guy that has to fill Duncan's shoes.
I heard the same podcast and laughed when they talked about the rumor the LA talked to Gasol during series about possibly teaming up in free agency. Would love to have seen the explosion had that come true. Everything points to LA coming here which scares me about the chances he actually comes here. It seems to good to be true. Wouldn't be surprised he takes another offer. If he does come here I just want to see what we get to shred splitters contract

The Blazers can offer Aldridge a five-year max deal totaling about $108 million, while rival offers top out at four years and $80 million.
That advantage means much less with the coming cap boom, which opens up options that used to be too risky for players or teams. Aldridge could sign a two-year max deal with another team, then hit free agency again, sign another two-year max deal, and make more money in just the next four years — about $111 million — than Portland can offer in that traditional five-year max contract. Over the full five years, Aldridge could earn about $35 million more double-dipping in free agency than by signing the longest possible contract with the Blazers this summer. THIRTY-FIVE MILLION. Only a fool would ignore that.

The last time the Spurs were considered the front-runner for a star FA (Jason Kidd in 2003), he did just that -- returned to his team.
It was a blessing in disguise, IMO, because a much younger Tony Parker stayed with the Spurs.

I also think that it is understated, maybe even unstated, that LA is not so blind that he can't see this organization may have him playing until he is 40 years old, instead of 36, etc. This longevity can also translate into more money on the back end to make up some of what he may lose (by not staying) in Portland. That could be something that might be enticing to a big man.
The Spurs may not be able to duplicate Duncan's results, but there is evidence that they will manage those minutes at all cost. Limited back to backs, etc.

To be contrarian, wouldn't the difference be much less over a shorter two year deal?
And might that not be what LMA would sign in either place (setting up a mega deal when the new cap kicked in).
Edit -- That's exactly what you said -- I misread your post.

Happened just last year with Bosh and Houston. There are plenty of examples of someone choosing the money. Players leaving money on the table for a new opportunity with a new team? Not so much.
Spurs are smart enough to work an alternate plan if this falls through, but unfortunately there is no Parker waiting in the wings on this roster.

The biggest chip that the Spurs have outside of the money is success. 4 trips deep into the playoffs, 2 finals appearances and 1 ring. Money is great but you want to leave a legacy while making money and the Spurs offer that with the pieces they have. There are a couple of scenarios that could occur; LMA signs and its a good deal, he fits in and they make a deep playoff run, LMA signs and its a terrible fit and they don't make the playoffs and end up being a lottery team and get a good player in return. If he doesn't come here then we don't lose a section of our bench and we all get to bitch about how Parker screwed us and how PAFTO doesn't do anything to move the needle during summer.
Last player to reject the money and choose to go somewhere else that was not "home" was.....?

He can also pick and pop, pick and roll, put the ball on the floor, play with back to basket, create his own shot, athletic defender that can guard perimeter or recover to guard pick and roll, great outside shot, pass, guard the 3, 4, 5 positions....oh yeah and can give you 20/20 games. A front court of Aldridge, Duncan and Kawhi is the best frontcourt in the NBA.... So yeah I'd be disappointed if we didnt get him.

Ken Berger reporting (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/writer/ken-berger/25229735/sources-salary-cap-could-be-significantly-higher-than-projected) that the cap could be as much as $2m higher than the expected $67.1m. That could be HUGE for the Spurs, increasing by as little as $1m means we can effectively give Aldridge his max AND keep Mills by just dumping Splitter. Going up by $2m means we could give Aldridge the max by dumping just Diaw. The Spurs get so much more flexibility with a $69m cap compared to $67m

Not true. He would actually make the same taking less playing for SA due to the State Income Tax. But it is that 5th year guarantee that is playing at him. Suppose the Spurs can give him a PO after the 1st year and resign him to another 4 year, more lucrative deal next year.

I think he means MegaSuperStar. Duncan and Shaq would definitely fit in that category. Aldridge is not one of those once in a generation type players. Under 25, only Davis is at this point. Even Kwahi doesn't fit that mold, and with his lack of leadership, he probably won't ever. But doesn't mean he can't be a HOF type player or a Max player.
A lot of max worthy player can't even touch Shaq or Duncan levels which is why they have multiple championships and FMVP trophies.

If he wants LA let him have it. We gotta have a guy willing to sacrifice NOW, for this group of players. LaMarcus could take a risk and go with the 4yr deal with player options in the latter two, but a pay bump in yrs 3/4 aren't guaranteed...risk of severe injury or decline. Not saying he won't do it. But, on this deal alone the Spurs will be outbid by the Blazers.

Lamar is the type of player you can dump the ball to on offense and hell take care of it. We don't have and haven't had that type of player since prime Duncan prime Manu and prime porker.
Beats having porker Evita or Danny green stand around like retards and let the shot clock run. I don't care about other teams. Lamar would fit the spurs like a glove
I don't have your confidence but I wish I did.

Yeah, that is why I mentioned the 5th year as being a big factor. The only way the Spurs can match the Blazers is if they put in a player option after the 1st year and resign him next for another 4 year deal, which he probably make more because of the cap increase and the max amount going up because of the increase cap.
It wouldn't be too risky for LMA as he can just sign a four deal (guarantee) with a player option after the 1st. So if he had an injury this coming season, he wouldn't to negatively effected by it financially.
Other teams like LA wouldn't want to give him a 2nd year PO because he might not like playing there and just bolt (just happen with Howard). I am sure the Spurs are confident LMA would love playing in their system.

Player options can only be for the final year of a contract. Aldridge would have to sign a two year deal to have a player option after next season. Given his age and health history that's very unlikely.

What's the max the Spurs can pay Green if they get LaMarcus?
Depends on what the revised luxury tax limit is.
They can pay Danny whatever they want. Like Fuzzy said they may not want to pay luxury tax though. It Holt is ok with LT, no limit on what they can pay DG up to his max.

Probably spotted on a plane going to LA. Don't blame him. TP, TD, Pop, RC, Kawhi and Manu will probably kicking for a couple days together in LA. I wouldn't be surprise if LMA joined them on a few excursions after the meeting.

The Aldridge meeting will last about 1 hour, it'll be intense with the Spurs selling the future, team concepts and what they envision the roster to look like. After a tense few minutes of silence Aldridge confirms, okay guys the Spurs is where I want to be but I gotta finish these interviews as a formality. Everyone smiles and nods and then Duncan breaks out the boxes.. "Now that this silliness is over lets get down to some real business"
Not saying it's truth. Just saying what they're saying:
http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2015/6/29/8865521/lamarcus-aldridge-los-angeles-lakers-nba-free-agency
When rumors first appeared about Aldridge planning to join a different team, the Spurs and then the Mavericks were reported to be his first choices. New reports suggest that has changed. As history has proven, it's impossible to count out the Lakers, who despite some bad seasons remain a free agency destination. So let's explore this rumor closely.
Why Aldridge will join the Lakers
As Bolch says, the Lakers' brand is too prestigious to be hurt by a couple of bad seasons. They are a storied franchise with a history of success that will always be among the best free agent destinations. For someone who has spent the first nine years of his career in a relatively small market like Portland, the exposure and endorsement opportunities that could come with playing in Los Angeles have to be tempting.
