View Full Version : Marc Stein: Spurs are #1 on LaMarcus Aldridge's list

I really don't get it, how is it that Houston still has cap space and the Spurs have trade away most of its bench and barely has any room left.
They'd have to trade their bench away for him.

LMAs train of thought sounds like Rockets would be better for him. He really doesnt want to play Center. And we are gutted without a center if we sign him. Its not Phoenix that should be fave, its the team with the younger Howard who is just about the only true center left in the nba.
Makes 0 sense when you consider how much harden has the ball in his hands. Not enough touches to go around for him, harden and Dwight

Sign and trade, they would have to move contracts to Portland for him
At least a guy like Ariza, who is very important to what they do.

Thanks. You like New Balance? Asics? I drink milk too great for the bones. Yeah the consensus for stretching has changed greatly over the past few years. Weird to see most don't recommend it now. I'll walk a bit first to protect from any tightness causing injury. Thanks for the tips.
No problem. I'm on 3 different pairs right now. I'm loving these Pearl Izumis, which for lightweight shoes, have enough cushioning to protect you without wearing you down. I also got a pair of Saucony Kinvaras, and Mizunos. As for New Balance, they are cool but I prefer Asics to them. Stretching is a tricky subject, and I admit sometimes I don't stretch at all but they can be of benefit from time to time after runs. If you can, try drinking chocolate Almond milk, I swear by it. I prefer the Silk brand.

Exactly they are traveling most of the year for games, and eating in fancy places. I used to travel every few months to San Francisco and eat in the best restaurants, that actually gets old after a while. SA may not be the best compared to some other cities but after being away even staying in fancy hotels and eating steak every day it was always good to come back. Every city you may live in for a while you will get used to after a while. Overall SA is pretty laid back, and there are plenty of nice areas if you have the money.
Clearly didn't read my post. This ass said SA is the SAME, outside of basketball, as everywhere but LA/NY re:livestyle options.
That is flatly not true.
It has is own, low key, unique dynamic. That's great, it's a great town.
But I'd bet no 30 y/o black millionaire would equate SA=Dallas=Houston=Phx=Mia
Sure theyre all unique, but 1 if those is clearly not like the others in terms of lifestyle or ecomonic opportunities. No one who has actually spent time in all those cities would say that.
I'm just saying be realistic about what you are and are not.

Looks like Jason Kidd didn't decide until July 10th.
This year is a bit strange because everything is happening so far. Back then, everyone else waited until Kidd decided to start the dominos falling.
Whoa, 10th of July? :(
I wish he can give us a definite time when to announce his "yay" or "nay" :)

Would be hilarious if his decision came down to a browsing session, in which he discovered this thread. :lol We're all assholes.
If my ten-minute Photoshop to be funny causes him to go to Phoenix, then he wasn't going to be a good addition to the Spurs anyway, and you guys can all thank me later. I wouldn't have spent the last three fucking days sitting in front of my computer if I weren't excited about Lamarcus Aldridge becoming a Spur. :)

Most of the advice now tends toward dynamic stretching. The racing team I run with does leg swings, donkey kicks, and various drills that work on flexibility in motion.
I also do a fair amount of work with a massage stick and a foam roller. That seems to do more good than old-fashioned stretching.
I also run a lot of trails in addition to paved surfaces. The soft and uneven surfaces provide a different stress than pavement and strengthen a lot of the supporting muscles. It's also a nice mental break, both the simple fact that I get to run in the woods and the fact that it's easier to ignore the watch on easy days.
As for shoes, I'm personally with SpurPadre. I run in Asics racing flats almost exclusively. But I'm a low-impact, shuffler with a neutral footstrike. You need to figure out what shoes fit your biomechanics. A good local running store can watch you run and set you up.

The Spurs offer a short window of Elitism. And a suspect future when the retirements happen.
The Suns offer a longer window, but of non-proven Elitism. I don't even think they would be Elite with him, but they obviously got him thinking.
And he will not be under anyone's shadow, or playing second fiddle to anybody there. He will be The Man.

No, I knew what you meant. I could see the advantage of perhaps keeping Beli, Splitter and Baynes, but their value was based on their ability to improve next year. Baynes and Marco would have needed to really take a leap to earn the money they ended up making, and Splitter is just simply an unknown quantity due to durability questions.

Given their question marks, the Spurs haven't really lost out on anything at this point. If Lamarcus isn't going to come to San Antonio, which is absolutely the perfect situation for him in every way, there's no guarantee any other top free agent big was going to. Retaining CJ, signing someone like the corpse of David West and a couple of journeyman bigs would probably be okay.

Maybe if Splitter plays 75+ games and Baynes turns out to be a competent starter, which he'd better for the money he got. Otherwise I think people freaking out are overrating what the Spurs had. Aldridge is certainly worth risking a few days in free agency.

Yeah. We were likely losing Marco and Baynes anyway. Sewing up Green and Kawhi were big. Missing LMA probably means David West. I'm in the camp that thinks the FO can't count on Splitter's health anymore and are okay moving on. If West is healthy that's not too bad. Meanwhile there should be cap room to swing some deal to absorb somebody. They've done clever stuff with space in the past, like when they got into the Brad Miller deal in 2003 and pulled Hedo Turkoglu and Ron Mercer. Sure, Mercer sucked for us, but they pulled that out of thin air.

There may not have been a bigger defender of Splitter over the years than me, and I have had to reluctantly come around to that conclusion. As Duncan ages, the ability to just eat up minutes for him becomes more important. There are guys in the league that set good screens and can do enough good things to fill in gaps for the team that they'll have a good rotation, plus they'll be able to count on them to fill up minutes.

I agree. He was a great fit here. The Spurs are one team, particularly going forward, where you just can't have a starter missing that much time if you don't know that it's ever going to get better. His injuries combined with Kawhi's eye and hand put too much pressure on Parker, and he was broken by the end of the season.

Of course it's the NBA, so if he signs with the Suns or Lakers, it will be for his own reasons. I don't know why he is dragging this out, sign a 2 year deal with Spurs and be happy.

Parker's calories put too much pressure on his waistline and his belt was broken by the end of the season.
I just think people are getting a little too cavalier with the whole "didn't lose much/we'll be fine" angle. Defenders like splitter are hard to come by, provided he's reasonably healthy.
Baynes on the other hand, not too hard to replace. Guys line him can be plucked from Europe whenever if scouted well, and lesser lame versions like Ayres or Elson are even easier to find.
Let's say LMA turns SA down and SA then signs West and my favorite euro center BOBAN. BOBAN can do a lot of things and I think would be a nice upgrade over Baynes, and a serious contributor backing up Duncan. I love BOBAN. But the spurs would still miss splitters defense. My man BOBAN just can't do those things, maybe not even as good as the injured splitter we saw in the playoffs.
And iI wouldn't want koufos instead.

But in order to do that, you have to remain healthy to be on the court.
Exactly, which is why Pop moved on. Probably would have no matter what.

Splitter, when healthy, is the best pick-setter in the NBA, he's an incredible defender, both team and one-on-one, and he can draw fouls at an alarming rate. It's the healthy part that kills his value.
