Lakers didn't make strong impression in Aldridge meeting, sources say. Spurs can close on him. LMA expected to make decision fairly soon.

What I love most is their direct approach. This isn't like other teams using a shotgun method and hoping someone signs with them. They've made it clear that the only guy they care about is LMA.

The fact that they dealt Splitter to a good situation in Atlanta with his old coach, and Green/Leonard resigned with no drama, also speaks volumes about how they take care of guys.

I have a really hard time believing that the Spurs have made all of these moves specifically for LMA without either an extremely high level of confidence, or a solid plan B. And I can't really figure out what the Plan B would be, short of pursuing Monroe which there has been little to no discussion about.

This is Spurs free agency, so I ain't counting any chickens yet...but the Spurs are really going all-in on this. They wouldn't let go of Splitter just for a pitching tactic.

Dallas being the frontrunners to sign Wes Matthews and DeAndre Jordan. LA supposedly not making that great of an impression. Toronto giving DeMarre Carroll a $60 million contract. I really think it's between us and Portland. I'm still not getting my hopes up yet...never underestimate the power of money. That extra year + $27 million that Portland can offer should not be understated.

It's difficult to not get one's hopes up. Then again, the Spurs are approximately 0-for-15 when it comes to signing First Option Big Name Free Agent ... and that includes many instances when the Big 3 were in their primes.

How may times have they ever even tried?

The only big names- or relatively big names where Finley and Derek Anderson.
In all honesty- Finley was 32 and his stats had declined over the past few years and the Spurs didn't have to pay much of his salary- His salary was going to be the same no matter where he signed due to his amnesty with Dallas.
Derek Anderson was intriguing to several teams, but not a huge #.
The only comparable was when they pursued Jason kidd

Spurs have the money (max contract). Spurs have the location (family and TX native). Spurs have the playing time (just shipped off starting big). Spurs have the contending status (2014 champs). Spurs have the nostalgia factor (LMA idolizes Duncan, likes Pop).

My order of Aldridge threats:

1. Portland - Money could talk loudest when all is said and done.

2. Los Angeles - I would rank them No. 1 if Kobe's contract wasn't on the books. Imagine if L.A. could tell LA that he could pick the free agents to join him. They could still do that to a degree but not quite with that monstrosity on the books. Thanks, Kobe :tu

3. Houston - They've always been pretty damn good at attracting big names. Plus Harden is a good selling point and D Ho would allow LA to stay at PF full-time, which is what he prefers.

4. Dallas - Hometown could have some pull.

5. NY - They're a bit of a mess but if he wants bright lights, it could be more attractive than L.A. since he wouldn't have to deal with Kobe's rotting corpse.

6. Uh, yeah, I'd be shocked if it's any other team.

The $90mm figure rumored for Kawhi and the figure rumored for Butler may have to do with different assumptions around this year's cap. Both will receive the same dollars.

Davis / Lillard figures are based on next year's assumed much higher cap.
