I think if it were that simple, he'd be a Sun now, or a Maverick. While I definitely think Lillard being the face of the franchise has a lot to do with it, it's also because he's the face of a franchise that hasn't done anything in years. It's insulting for Lillard to get anointed (in addition to getting a much bigger contract) after LMA put in a decade of service. Damien is being far overhyped as a player and especially as a potential franchise cornerstone. Tim is a GOAT candidate, and Leonard has a fMVP and DPOY. Parker and Manu are future HoFers. It's much easier to be a JAG when that's the team you're on rather than losing out to a guy who's coming off two overrated playoff series in a row.

1.) Lillard is one of the worst defenders in the league yet still got superstar treatment over LMA

I think if it were that simple, he'd be a Sun now, or a Maverick. While I definitely think Lillard being the face of the franchise has a lot to do with it, it's also because he's the face of a franchise that hasn't done anything in years. It's insulting for Lillard to get anointed (in addition to getting a much bigger contract) after LMA put in a decade of service. Damien is being far overhyped as a player and especially as a potential franchise cornerstone. Tim is a GOAT candidate, and Leonard has a fMVP and DPOY. Parker and Manu are future HoFers. It's much easier to be a JAG when that's the team you're on rather than losing out to a guy who's coming off two overrated playoff series in a row.

Then you look at last season and you see equally good teams like Grizzlies, Rockets and Clippers just not even make the finals. You see very good teams like the Spurs and the Thunder fail because of injuries. Then you realize... it takes a lot more than money and good players to win it all.

Everything had to come together for the Warriors to win. (1) Depleted Cavs team. (2) Injuries to top PG defenders in all teams they faced. (3) Not facing an injury free Spurs in the playoffs. I can say the same thing about the Spurs.... avoiding Thunder and injuries to that team.

Now for the upcoming season, the Spurs still have to worry about 3 teams.... the Champs, Thunder and Rockets. The last two teams have big front lines.

Leonard and Green are great but Bowen would allow players their average ppg on more shots attempted and frustrated the hell out of them doing it. LaMarcus is a very good player who lost a power struggle / popularity contest with DL to be the face of the franchise, and it meant enough for him to leave and leave a lot of money on the table. That is the one consistent whisper in the sea of rumors. If so, then being in Timmy's shadow for a few more years (and in fact forever) and sharing the franchise leadership with the up and coming Leonard (even quiet and unassuming as he is) doesn't really solve the issue he wants solved. The Suns sensed that and jumped on it with promises of LMA 'being the man" and being basketball savior to the city. It has put them in the game, when by all other measures, they shouldn't be.
