View Full Version : Marc Stein: Spurs are #1 on LaMarcus Aldridge's list

He's not pressuring him, at the end of the meeting Pop needs to make the shit or get off the pot statement though. Spurs are 11-14 other players on the team, LMA or anyone else is a cog in the machine.
Meanwhile, Manu still doesn't know if he's coming back.

Yeah, Clippers are absolutely fucked if they don't keep DJ. Pretty sure I saw that even if he walks, they essentially have no room to add anybody else. Could maybe use an exception or two, but aside from that it'd be all guys for the minimum.
I really don't think Portland is in the mix anymore. They've now lost 2 starters in Batum/Matthews, and it doesn't even sound like Portland is trying to bring back Lopez. If Aldridge is remotely serious about winning, which it sounds like is certainly the case, they have to basically be eliminated by now.
I think it'll be one of the Texas teams tbh. Still not buying the Phoenix shit. Dallas would be pretty scary if they got Wes + DJ + Aldridge, but I'm not sure that's even possible and they'd literally have all their cap tied into 5 players. That bench would be atrocious. Guess the same goes for Houston.

Maybe. But I'm just saying that the Spurs are actually pretty used to waiting on their guys deciding if they were returning or not. This is the third straight off-season where at least one major piece has been undecided for a while. The Spurs are waiting on both of those guys -- and who knows who else? But that's not abnormal for a team that has an old core and who relies on guys coming over/back at discounted rates.

The last time, at least with Gino, it took just a few mere hours after the Spurs called him up to Bahia Blanca. It's entirely possible the Spurs are putting their focus on the FA market right now, since they know a guy like Gino is only going to come back to the Spurs and nowhere else. I also get the feeling things are going to settle down once the Spurs know what kind of money they're working with.

You really need to up your mileage for optimal marathon performance. :toast Are you running Boston next year? Registration opens September 14! :flag:
Eh, not really. I used to run 70-77 miles a week for a couple of years but didn't finish my best marathon time until last year, when I ran the SF marathon in 2 hours and 48 minutes and that was while I cut down my weekly mileage to the current 40-49. Besides that, now I'm just running to keep fit and have already done the NYC, BOSTON, SAN JOSE, AND SAN FRANCISCO marathons. That's enough for my competitive days.

Are you talking 2013 or 2014? For both years, it wasn't just Manu, or even Manu and Tim. There was also waiting on Diaw and Mills to reup, Splitter flirting with Portland. Even though the Spurs are known for people really stable, they go through uncertainty with core players every year.

Yeah I do understand being uneasy about the situation because we could be royally fucked if LMA decides to go elsewhere and all the decent FA bigs are snatched up by other teams. Just feel like people are taking it way overboard by acting like Aldridge is doing some unthinkable shit by not having his decision in the first couple of days of FA. Hell, we could have a decision by tomorrow night, and that would only be, what, 3 and a half days since the initial meeting? That's not absurd or a sign that he's drawing this process out as long as possible.

We're fucked for one year if DJ walks. We're fucked for 4 or 5 years minimum if he stays. I'd rather sacrifice one season and have max cap space next summer than go all-in with a core that can't even make the WCF and a role player who's only getting the max because the center position is devoid of talent.

This is unlike any other free agency period I have ever seen. Usually nothing much happens until the 2 or 3 top FAs commit, but this year GMs just started throwing crazy money around from the beginning. Normally you'd see guys like Chandler and Lopez wait to see if the Spurs/Rockets struck out on LMA and then they'd swoop into that spot, but the money is just too good this year to not take the offers from shit teams like the Suns, Bucks, Knicks, etc.

Doesn't it dispel all the rumors that he's leaning towards San Antonio, if Pop is looking for a second meeting?
When you are selling, you can never rest when you are this close to the close. The competition is throwing everything they got because they sense they are losing the deal. You have to stay in front of the prospect and remind them why you are the best choice and why they felt that way in the first place.

Not IMO. It only gives credence to the reports that LMA is very wishy-washy and emotional. But Spurs can be in the lead & Pop may very well just want to be near the last to speak with LMA knowing the last impression might be the one that wins. He wants to answer any and all questions LMA has because LMA seems to be a guy that really struggles with stuff like this.

I'm unsure how Jeff McDumbass doesn't understand how this works. Spurs fans don't usually get a shot at THE #1 free agent, so we wait and wait and wait and wait every year for the scraps, while the #1 free agent is gone pretty quickly. Now that we get annoyed at the fact that Lamarcus thinks this is 20 years ago when free agency was a month long, that fucking idiot starts tweeting about us because he's salty that we've called him out for being shitty at his job all these years. :lol

The net effect is that it will remove the amount of FA money available league-wide. Dallas will spend theirs but the Clipps won't have any corresponding bump in funds. :)
Yup - hurts the Clips more than it helps the Mavs (unless both Parsons & Wes come back like gangbusters after their injuries)

After basketball I don't understand why this is a hard choice.
Short of NY/LA, any city he chooses is basically the same for rich people. Do I want to live in a nice house and go to nice restaurants in Houston, San Antonio, or Phoenix? Is there really a significant difference? NBA players are out of state 1/2 the time during the season, and he already has a house he lives in during the offseason.

There's no way Dallas could still get Aldridge if DJ chooses to go there, right? So Pop told LMA to shop around, told him what the important questions to ask were, and said at the end of it let's get back together and tell me what you learned. Are the Spurs the best fit for what you want or is somebody else?
So if LMA goes and asks Pop's questions to a bunch of other teams (which would be indicated if his questions were unusually poignant for a FA) that means he already trusts and buys into Pop. It also means Pop can simultaneously convince LMA that SA is the best fit, AND use him for some intelligence-gathering on other teams.

Spurs already lost 3 good role players. Aldridge better comes.

CIA Pop indeed.
So all you quivering nancies can just settle down. This is all of Day 3 in free agency. If the Spurs get their man, fantastic. If they don't, life will go on.

Spurs losing depth (Marco, Baynes, Splitter, possibly Manu) LMA better sign or we will almost certainly be a weaker team (at least in the short run).
Also, we're almost out of foreign white guys!!! :lol

Lamarcus is down for his nap right now, and they don't know if he's going to wake up cranky.

Probably reading too much in to it, but earlier I read Beli wanted to stay with the Spurs, and was waiting on the Aldridge thing to see what's what. Maybe Aldridge made a commitment at this second meeting that we don't know is even happening?
Or Belinelli took some good money as soon as he was offered.

He accepted before Vivek and Vlade came down off their coke bender. They're gonna wake up face down on a giant glass table tomorrow and realize they traded half their roster for the privilege of sending picks to Philly, all to sign Stauskas Sr. and Ronda.

Pop won't flange around much longer; if there is another meeting today it will be Pop saying sign on the line that is dotted or good luck in your future. I bet it ends today one way or another.

Nope.
you're right the tweet said it would be clarified by aldridge decision. forgot about that. Spurs might have paid what charlotte offered but wouldn't have paid over 6Mil/yr.

Killing time here...so, who thinks Slomo will have a break-out year?
Given the minutes, I think he'll blossom into a great playmaker beside Mills, open shots all day with people defending his herky jerky forays into the paint.

Hope you're right. Our bench is going to need him. Won't be what it was last year...
